Country Day Summer 2019 Dear Parents and Campers, There are several ways to enjoy the Country Day Summer program. Sign up for Camp Cavalier – either morning, afternoon, or full-day - or only select Cavalier Classes to fit your summer schedule. You can even mix and match camp and classes to make the most of your summer. Please take some time to read through our Summer brochure; then register with Smart Tuition and make your choices. Many of our classes fill up quickly! The Camp Cavalier program hires experienced and enthusiastic high school and college students, and classes are most often taught by school-year teachers. Small groups and classes keep your child focused, happy, and challenged. Program activities and classes use most of the SCDS campus and there are days when the site is transformed into a winter wonderland or a luau. Camp Cavalier offcampus trips transport our campers to the Arden Park Pool, Bounce U, and Country Club Lanes; and Cavalier Classes include everything from art, dino dig, building your own 3D printer, and science to sports. This is your child’s opportunity to polish skills, learn something new, make new friends, and increase his or her independence in a positive and healthy environment. We encourage our campers to have fun and embrace their day. My staff and I have done our job if your child doesn’t want to leave camp, goes home dirty, or even sleeps through dinner! I have worked at Country Day for 18 years and Summer Camp is my favorite time of the year! I am fortunate to work with dedicated teachers and staff, hard-working counselors, and enthusiastic campers. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES REGISTRATION & INFORMATION

Registration for Summer Camp and Classes begins online on Monday, April 8, 2019. All families will need a Smart Tuition account prior to registration. Camp Cavalier is available to K-5th grade students, and Cavalier Classes are available to incoming K-12th grade students.

RETURNING FAMILIES

Your Smart Tuition Summer Camp account will be set up as it was for Summer 2018 unless you contact the school to make changes. If you do not remember your login credentials for summer camp, go to parent.smarttuition.com. If you need assistance with your account, please contact Joy Pangilinan at jpangilinan@saccds.org or Carol Wessels at cwessels@saccds.org. For families enrolled at SCDS during the school year, please note that this account is different from your school account; the Smart Tuition ID # for Summer is 13794. Once your 2018 account has been made active by SCDS, you will be able to review your account set up and billing online at https://parent.smarttuition.com/.

NEW FAMILIES

New families are required to create an account for camp billing purposes by enrolling in Smart Tuition at https:// enrollwithsmart.com/#/enroll/41986. Once you have created your Smart Tuition account, you will be able to register for Summer Classes and Camp.

ENROLLMENT AND DEPOSITS

Starting on Monday, April 8, visit countrydaysummer.org to make your camp and class selections. Registration for a class and/or camp is online only. A deposit is required to reserve your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spot in each week of camp or class. Deposits are nonrefundable, except if the class is cancelled. The balance due will be billed and paid via your Smart Tuition Summer Camp account. Country Day Summer Classes and Camp are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. In the event the class you signed up for is full, you will be notified and placed on a waiting list. The Summer Director is responsible for making final decisions on a camperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enrollment and registration.

PAYMENT

Invoices for the remaining balance due for classes and camps will be handled by Smart Tuition. Payments will be due on the 20th of the month. Automatic payments can be set up with Smart Tuition. If you opt to be invoiced, you will receive a monthly statement via email. Payments can be made via the web, phone, mobile app, or by mail. All credit and debit card payments are subject to a 2.85% credit card convenience fee. Smart Tuition accepts ACH payments and checks without additional fees. Checks should be payable to Smart Tuition. Smart Tuition will charge a late fee of $40 if payments are not received on time.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES CAMP GUIDELINES AND POLICIES

By enrolling your child(ren) in the SCDS Summer Program, you agree to the guidelines and policies of the Country Day Summer Program below. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Joy Pangilinan.

SIGN-IN/OUT PROCEDURES

Country Day Summer participants need to be signed in and out by a parent or guardian. Persons picking up a child must be 18 years of age or older with an I.D. and authorized by a designated person. If a parent or guardian is unable to sign out their campers, please notify the Summer Director.

PHOTOGRAPHY PERMISSION

SCDS reserves the right to use photos from summer camp or classes for the Summer Program brochure, social media accounts, and other SCDS promotional materials.

DISCIPLINE POLICY

All participants have the right to enjoy a positive, healthy, and safe experience in the Country Day Summer Program. As part of this right, all students are expected to follow and support our expectations of participation, positive attitude, and respectful behavior at all times. Behavior or language perceived by the Summer Director and staff to be disrespectful, hurtful, unsafe, or threatening may result in camper’s suspension or dismissal from the program. This extends to any behavior that undermines our goal to best serve the needs of all our participants.

ALLERGY POLICY

Sacramento Country Day School values the safety of all of our community members and exercises some common sense precautions to support students who have specific allergies. Though we are not a nut-free school, we strive to make it safer for children and adults with food allergies to participate in the full range of activities available at school. The School’s Responsibilities We will educate the faculty and staff about allergies, signs and symptoms of allergy and anaphylaxis, and provide training on the use of epinephrine (Epi-Pens and other such devices). Each child with a known allergy will have an Allergy and Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan in the school and PE offices, and, for Lower School students, in their classroom. We will educate students and parents about allergies and appropriate precautions. Each faculty and staff member will be made aware of which children in their care have serious allergies. All emergency medication and Emergency Care Plans will be taken on field trips. Children may not share or trade food with each other. We will inform other parents in the camp or class if a student’s allergy is so severe that particular items cannot be brought to school. The Family’s Responsibilities Provide a complete Allergy and Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan to the school office. Inform the school if your child’s allergy could be triggered by casual contact with the allergen (e.g. touch or inhalation rather than ingestion). If this is the case, more specific precautions will be implemented in your child’s classroom or grade to minimize the possibility of contact. Provide all proper medication for your child. Provide treats for your child to have on hand for birthdays or class parties. Children with known allergies may not eat food provided by others. If needed, treats may be stored in the refrigerator or freezer at school. Please label the treats. Continue to educate and remind your child to limit his/her foods to those provided by or approved by the family. Help to educate teachers, parents, and, if desired, classmates about food allergies. 5

CAMP CAVALIER (JUNE 17-AUGUST 2) CAMP CAVALIER

Camp Cavalier is for campers looking for long-term or drop-in summer care. Camp Cavalier campers participate in a series of activities, workshops, presentations, weekly field trips, and more. Campers are placed in ageappropriate groups and are led through a series of activities by their camp counselors.

FOOD & DRESS CODE

There is no food service available on campus. Please send your camper with morning and afternoon snacks, as well as a lunch. Please have participants come to camp in comfortable attire. Closed-toe shoes only; sneakers are preferred.

FIELD TRIPS

If you prefer your camper not attend a field trip, you must pick up your camper by 12:30 p.m. on the scheduled field trip date. There is no camp available on campus during field trip days. • On Tuesday afternoons, campers will leave at 1:00 p.m. to swim at Arden Park Pool at 1000 La Sierra Drive, Sacramento. Please send your campers to camp with their bathing suit underneath their clothes. This will make the sunscreen session run smoothly and quickly. Sandals, sunscreen, and towels are needed. Students will be transported to the pool on the Sacramento Country Day School bus. • On Thursday afternoons, throughout the summer, there are additional field trips. Camp Cavalier contracts with Natomas Unified School District for field trip transportation. Please do not send any additional spending money with campers on field trips; they will not be allowed to spend it on field trips. Field trips are subject to change. If a change occurs, no credits or refunds will be made.

FUNTASTIC FRIDAYS

• On Friday afternoons, campers will need their bathing suits, towels, sandals, and sunscreen for waterslide and sprinkler fun.

CAVALIER CLASSES

Sacramento Country Day School offers a dynamic learning environment for those children interested in refining their skills and expanding their knowledge. Campâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s philosophy is consistent with the SCDS mission, which emphasizes development of selfconfidence, creativity, integrity, and responsibility. Cavalier Classes run from 9-11 a.m., 9 a.m.-12 p.m., or 1-4 p.m. High School Cavalier Classes run from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. or 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Please note the two High School classes begin on Monday, June 10. Please sign your student in and out at the registration table. If your child is sick and cannot make it to class, please contact the Summer Director, so she can notify his or her teachers. 11th-12th | June 10 - July 12 | 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Instructor: Kellie Whited This course introduces general biology themes while building upon the concepts introduced in chemistry. The major themes covered include cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, plant and animal physiology, and biodiversity. In addition to textbook learning, the class also focuses on daily laboratory work and learning how to apply the scientific method. Additionally, relevant current issues in the news media provide topics for discussion and debate. A year of chemistry is required before taking this class. This class is a UC-certified lab-science course.

PRE-CALCULUS HONORS

This course introduces coordinate geometry (also known as Cartesian and analytic geometry) and trigonometry to the student. It provides the basis for analysis, which in turn prepares students for analytical studies in physical and social sciences. As the name 8

Students will learn color theory, brush application, and different art genres, as well as complete a portfolio of work to be displayed at a camp art show at the end of week two. The Piper Computer Kit is the ultimate D.I.Y. computerbuilding experience for kids - everything your child needs to build a real computer from start to finish. They will enjoy playing and coding on their new “take home” computers.

Coach Ancrum’s professional basketball career includes playing for coaching legend Phil Jackson and numerous scoring titles. “Ank’s” expertise and ability to develop character make this a wonderful experience for players at any level. Instruction includes skill development, team play, and an impressive list of guest speakers.

GAME DESIGN

4th-7th | July 8-12 | 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Instructor: Shelley Hinson

During this week-long course, students will build their own game with RPG Maker MV. By learning the basic principles of game design, JavaScript, and HTML5, students will learn to create games that encourage creativity.

ASSEMBLE YOUR OWN 3D PRINTER 4th-7th | July 29- August 2 | 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Instructor: Shelley Hinson

During this week-long course, students will learn about the 3D printing process. Students will assemble their own 3D printers, learn to create 3D objects in Tinkercad, and set designs up in Cura to be printed on their own “take home” 3D printers.

MAKERSPACE

4th-8th | June 24-28 | 1- 4 p.m. Instructor: Bill Crabb

The Makerspace is a place for kids to get creative and make things. Students will learn to use creative and flexible thinking and problem-solve while gaining new skills. The Makerspace provides access to basic hand tools, art and craft supplies and tools, and recycled materials like cardboard and plastic. Students will be able to come up with their own ideas, find inspiration in the materials available, or play with resources set out each day to entice them to get messy and creative.

In this class, students will have a blast creating their own movies and short stories. Using iPods, digital cameras and Samsung gear 360, students will explore video editing using iMovie and Adobe Rush software. Students also will learn how to incorporate music using Garage Band. Also covered are creating transitions and titles, integrating text, and adding graphics.

Do you have questions about starting Middle School at Country Day? (How do I open my locker? Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s with this rotating schedule? Where in the world is the Matthews Library? When is the first Middle School dance?) During this week-long class, Middle School students will engage in various activities designed to help them learn the ropes of Country Day Middle School. Campus scavenger hunts and demo lessons with faculty members will help students become familiar with the ins-and-outs of Middle School. Activities on organization, materials management, and study tips will promote that budding independence and self-management that Middle School is all about. Plus, some good, traditional camp fun (tie-dying t-shirts, themed days, group games and more).

Campers will participate in a variety of individual and team sports throughout the week. Students will learn basic motor skills such as catching, running, and throwing that will be beneficial for all sports. We will also cover the basics of health and nutrition. There will be a focus on stretching, hydrating, and healthy snacks. Finally, team-building and communication games will be played to foster sportsmanship and teamwork. Please note this class will attend a field trip on the last day of class Friday, June 21, 2019.

PHOTOGRAPHY FUN

4th-8th | July 22-26 | 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Instructor: Emily Eustace

Looking to improve your photography skills? Interested in stepping up your Instagram game? Have a camera at home but have no idea how it use it? Come to this session, where we will learn the fundamentals of good photo taking. Aperture settings, shutter speed, and ISO will become a part of your daily vocabulary. Through in-class and walking/local field trips, students will learn proper composition and, by using natural light, will hone their exposure skills. A portable flash drive is required. Students are expected to bring their own cameras. Please contact the Summer Director if you need a camera.

This camp is designed for both rising SCDS 6th graders and new SCDS 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. By having this shared experience of camp, students will come away with new friendships and connections that will last into the school year and beyond.

Let your imagination run wild this summer and turn your great ideas into exciting writing projects. Have you ever wanted to write your own novel, family history, mystery, adventure story, poetry collection, or fantasy series? Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll gain confidence in the writing process and discover fun ways to express your own thoughts and ideas in this summer class. Students can bring a Chromebook, iPad, or other electronic device to write their stories.

WORLD BUILDING

World building is designed for junior artists, writers, directors, or anyone with a grand imagination. What is world building? It is the process used for creating fictional worlds in books, movies, games, and art. We will cover the most successful fictional worlds and what makes them so popular. From there we break down every detail in the process of world creation. Students are then encouraged to design their own worlds using their favorite mediums. These projects are of their own choosing and could include short stories, paintings, sketches, comics, maps, or a combination of these.

According to The Guardian, board game sales have increased 25-40 percent annually over the last few years. With dedicated online communities, amateur designers are able to share their newest game creations with the world. In this course, students will design and test their own board games. Each delicious day will be filled with stories, art for the kitchen, and recipes galore! Join some friends to create balanced breakfasts, luscious lunches, delectable dinners, scrumptious snacks, and delightful desserts. Finish the week with your own cookbook of recipes and ideas. We hope you’ll join us for a wonderful, mouth-watering week.

Every day is a celebration in Celebrations Around the World! Come explore how other cultures celebrate major holidays, study maps, and sample the customs of many cultures through games, art, food and stories. Our professional dance instructor will guide young dancers as they explore elements of dance, including body, space, energy, and time. Come move and play while enhancing literacy skills. In each class, we will read a number of children’s books and use characters and elements within the book to inspire our movement and dance making! Students will build both their spoken and movement vocabulary as they improve locomotor skills and enhance spatial awareness in a fun and creative setting.

Calling all young scientists! Curious about the world around you? Interested in using science to solve problems or setting up your own experiments? If so, join us for a week of hands-on exploration of the world of science and engineering.

DIVING INTO 1ST GRADE

Calling all former Kindergarteners! Are you ready to put on your snorkel and flippers and dive into 1st grade? This summer get a jump on your 1st grade skills. Come move, be creative, express yourself and have fun with your friends! In this camp, you will explore the elements of dance, including body, energy, space and time, as you participate in dance warm-ups, technique and skill-building exercises, improvisations and creating your own choreography! You will have the opportunity to make your own dances based on many different inspirations, ranging from superheroes to hula-hoops to scientific concepts to your favorite song. The end of the camp will feature an “infor-mance” in which dancers will perform the dances they have created and inform the audience how they created them!

Dragon Fire Martial Arts is a blended art. Students will learn our “Run, Yell and Tell” self defense program, as well as the kicks and punches of Taekwondo, the basic throws and falls of Judo, and the basic pins of Jiu Jitsu. Our art stresses the tenets of the martial arts, which are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control, and indomitable spirit.

Enjoy hearing different fairy tales each day. We’ll do art projects, acting, puppet making, and maybe even some cooking, along with a bit of learning. All young knights and princesses, fairies, and wizards are welcome. Come dressed for fun in the fairy-tale castle.

This camp is for all kids who love the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Join your friends for a week of arts, crafts, and games that all center around the aspects of Rowling’s magical realm. This extremely ornate and fancy week full of glamour, proper greetings, and conversation is designed to help our young friends’ radiance shine inside and out! Students will also learn about being kind, speaking to new friends, and greeting new people, as well as what to do if they are feeling shy. 15

The world moves at a mile a minute and the news never stops. What is news? Is it just politics? Or could it be food and culture? Entertainment? Sports? Join us as we take a deep dive into what it means to be a part of the news industry. We will study various forms of reporting, write articles and blogs, create a camp newspaper, and record a short on-the-scene coverage of an exciting event on campus. We will even take a field trip to a local news agency and see the news in action.

Join us while we turn Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are” into musical theatre – with costumes, props, instruments, and dancing. A slightly wild rumpus for all! We will study the story, brainstorm about how to turn it into a play, learn our parts, create scenery, put together costumes, and present the play to our family and friends on Friday, July 19, 2019.

Come to this session, where we will learn the fundamentals of good photo taking. Aperture settings, shutter speed, and ISO will become a part of your daily vocabulary. Through in-class and walking/local field trips, students will learn proper composition and, by using natural light, will hone their exposure skills. A portable flash drive is required. Students are expected to bring their own cameras. Please contact the Summer Director if you need a camera.

PIONEERING INTO 4TH GRADE

In this class, students will have a blast creating their own movies and short stories. Using iPods, digital cameras, and Samsung gear 360, students will explore video editing using iMovie and Adobe Rush software. Students also will learn how to incorporate music using Garage Band. Also covered are creating transitions and titles, integrating text, and adding graphics.

Westward Ho! Learn the trails of a 4th grader as we pioneer through the curriculum. Get ready to take on creative writing, multi-digit multiplication, decimals, and California history. This fun camp encourages a love for the game of soccer and is the perfect way to get your player ready for the fall leagues. Taught by Matt Vargo, former college Olympic Development Program Coach and High School Varsity Coach with more than 20 years of experience, this camp will focus on individual skill development and small sided-games to hone offensive and defensive tactics. In this encouraging environment, young athletes will gain an understanding of team concepts, foot skills, and game strategy, while building confidence in their technique for kick-off at their first league game!
