Welcome and Thank You from the Head of School Welcome to Country Day’s 41st annual auction, “the Best of Sacramento.” Whether you are already a member of the Country Day family, or a guest tonight just learning about our wonderful school, thank you for your generosity. Proceeds from the Auction go towards recruitment, retention, and professional development of our incomparable faculty and staff and enable the school to offer tuition assistance and scholarships to students throughout the Sacramento region, many of whom would not receive such a life-changing education without the generosity of individuals like you. The brand new Kimpton Sawyer Hotel is a fitting site for Country Day’s Auction. Standing alongside the award winning Golden 1 Center, the hotel and its surroundings symbolize the renaissance of our downtown, the result of inspired partnership between the city and the Sacramento Kings. While a bit more understated than these sparkling metropolitan symbols, several miles to the east, near the intersection Fair Oaks and Munroe, sits Country Day. I happily tell prospective families that SCDS offers the best education in the region by all measurable standards – the highest SAT and AP scores, 100% of graduates attending a who’s who of selective colleges and universities across the country and internationally. The numbers, while impressive, reveal only a snapshot of the Country Day experience. The intangibles are captured by our mission statement: Sacramento Country Day inspires intellectual inquiry and engages a diverse community to think critically, live creatively, and act compassionately. A Country Day education consists of a mosaic of experiences, both in and beyond the classroom, all of which are rooted in partnership between the school and families, between students and dedicated, talented teachers, and among a diverse and creative population of students. Weed Road Pictures executive Greg Lessans (My Best Friend’s Girl, Mardi Gras, Flock of Dudes) has worked with screenwriters at various levels of experience and is available to hear your movie pitch or look at a screenplay you’re working on. WINE TASTING AND PICNIC FOR SIX VIA CAR SERVICE TO THE SIERRA FOOTHILLS Get out of the valley sometime soon and gather some friends for a chauffeured ride to the family-owned Skinner Vineyards and Winery, tucked away in the Sierra foothills in El Dorado County. The car service will pick up your group at a central location and you’ll be treated to juice and pastries during your drive to the winery. Your private tour of the vineyards and winery will be followed by a seated tasting of their Rhône-style wines in their private cellar tasting room. Students looked at works with winter themes from various artists, then designed and created their own winter scenes. Each student embellished their abstract aerial view with watercolors and colored pencils, before using tools to add texture. Their art project unites the pieces into a framed piece. 36. ASHDOWN’S CLASS As part of their study of California museums, fourth grade students studied the rose window designs found in many churches. They looked at the color contrasts and the balanced elements, and then used colored pencils to draw their own rose window designs. Whether you’ve never baited a hook or you are a Bassmaster, you are practically guaranteed to catch a fish at Lake Sandy, a small, private lake at the Buchanan Ranch in Wilton. Lunch will be provided at this family event scheduled for a warm Sunday in August before we return to school, and the pool will be open for cool-down swimming. The lake is loaded with bass and bluegill, and if it’s your first time, there will be folks to help you get started. If you need a pole, try the basic one at Bass Pro Shop. 22
