Sacramento Country Day

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Ethan Jackson for their tirelessly optimistic energy. I’m pleased

to announce that Ethan and Elizabeth have agreed to continue in their roles for the 2018-19 school year, their third year in a row.

We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support of the Parents’

Association and its board, led by President Kelly Hall and a dream team consisting of Vice President Jamie Iseman, Treasurer Ana

Guile, and Secretary/Volunteer Coordinators Stephen Chuchel and Jelena Tiemann. Our entire parent body makes up an essential

element to the success of Country Day. Without the generosity and selflessness of our parents, who give so much to our school, we

wouldn’t be able to offer the rich and varied programs that we do. My sincerest thanks to our Auction Chairs Emily Stephenson and Amie Stevenson for a magnificent auction at the new Kimpton

Sawyer Hotel downtown. It was certainly a pleasure to “Celebrate

the Best” of what Country Day and our home town of Sacramento have to offer.

In addition, I thank our Board of Trustees for giving generously

of their time, effort, and resources. I am especially grateful for the work of Board President Julie Sloat, Vice President Jenna Magan, Dear Friends, This year’s Annual Report focuses on the importance of our school’s mission. Our newly revised mission statement —

“Country Day inspires intellectual discovery and engages a

diverse community to think critically, live creatively, and act

compassionately” — is the heartbeat of everything we do. But

faculty and staff could not accomplish the wonderful work we do every day without the generosity of time and treasure so many

give to the school. Thank you to everyone who has donated to the school or volunteered time; it is truly a team effort.

Thanks to your generosity, the Annual Fund this year raised nearly $300,000 with parent participation holding steady at 89%. These Annual Fund donations funded faculty summer collaborative

grants, First Aid/CPR training for all campus employees, a trip to

the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles for eight administrators and teachers, and a laser cutter for the Makerspace.

Total funds raised and committed this year came to $730,000,

including nearly $200,000 for the Country Day Scholars program,

which supports eight High School students each year beginning in

Treasurer Loren Kaye, and Secretary Angela Donlan. Our trustees

help to guide Country Day and to ensure that it thrives as the best college preparatory school in the Sacramento region. I especially want to thank Lee Mahla for her 12 years of participation on the

Board of Trustees. During her tenure, she served as chair of both

the Advancement and Trustee committees, was a lead member of

the Capital Campaign Committee raising funds for the building of the Lower School, and co-chaired the 2007 auction.

Finally, I express my deepest gratitude to our remarkable faculty

and staff, who provide our students with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in their studies and in life. In addition

to their daily work around campus on behalf of our students, they again topped all constituent groups with 98% participation in the Annual Fund, demonstrating their commitment to Country Day.

Thank you to our dedicated educators and to all our supporters who make our school the best in the region.

I am excited to be entering my third year as Country Day’s Head of School. It is an honor to serve this school and community. Warmest regards,

9th grade.

Advancement Director Carolyn Woolf and her team brought

renewed energy to fundraising this year. Special thanks to Lindsey

Committee, and to Annual Fund co-chairs, Elizabeth Monasa and

Sacramento Country Day

MISSION

COUNTRY DAY INSPIRES INTELLECTUAL DISCOVERY AND ENGAGES A DIVERSE COMMUNITY TO THINK CRITICALLY, LIVE CREATIVELY, AND ACT COMPASSIONATELY.

CORE VALUES Intellectual Discovery We challenge students to pursue academic and personal excellence as they develop and embrace their passion for learning. Our students thrive in a dynamic college preparatory program that fuels curiosity, instills confidence, and builds resilience. Diversity Our inclusive community promotes equity and understanding through meaningful conversation that

welcomes a variety of voices and celebrates individuality. Critical Thinking Our students grapple with complex issues, engage with conflicting points of view, make connections, and collaborate. We empower students with the skills to thrive in an evolving world. Creativity Our students explore, improvise, and take risks as they discover and fully express themselves as individuals. Compassion We nurture empathy, integrity, and responsibility in a safe and supportive community that values kindness, respect, and civic engagement.

DONORS TO THE COUNTRY DAY SCHOLARS PROGRAM Each year we welcome two scholarship recipients to the 9th grade, who are selected because they demonstrate promise in the following areas: academics, leadership, innovation, arts, and service. The scholarship includes tuition, textbooks, class trips, one-on-one college counseling, an SAT preparation course, and a school-issued laptop computer. The Country Day Scholars Program is supported, in part, by the Fund-a-Need paddle raise at the auction, this year raising $55,850. We continue to be grateful to the Harry C. & Deborah L. Elliott Family Foundation for their initial support, which allowed the school to launch the Country Day Scholars Program, and their gift to establish the endowed Harry C. & Deborah L. Elliott Family Foundation Scholarship Fund that will continue to support the Country Day Scholars Program in perpetuity. AUCTION CHAIRS EMILY STEPHENSON AND AMIE STEVENSON

On a balmy Saturday evening in April, auction attendees celebrated the “Best of Sacramento” at the new Kimpton Sawyer Hotel. A good-natured group of High School parents were on hand to help with set up, clean up, and hosting a picnic for the students on the red and black teams at the annual back-to-school picnic at Ancil Hoffman Park. This year, the winning black team, made up of the frosh and seniors, was the 3rd straight year of victory for the seniors. The picnic and the “capture the flag” game is a tradition dating from 1973.

The Francie Tidey Award for Excellence in Education was established in 2001 by the Alumni Association to honor Francie Tidey, longtime Head of High School, college counselor, and English teacher. The award recognizes a member of the faculty or administration who has made an outstanding contribution to the SCDS community during his or her tenure. The award is presented at the High School graduation ceremony. This year’s recipient, Evelyn Dale, was announced by her son Chris Dale, class of 1993, who said, “She introduced Country Day and its students to the world of computer science, inspiring excitement in a field that, at the time, was deemed peripheral to education. Early on, she was using computers to teach lower school students how to build presentations and older students how to create newspapers.” Another graduate added, “I shudder to think what it would have been like to enter college in the early 2000s without knowing everything she taught me. “ Country Day was fortunate to employ Evelyn Dale during a time when familiarizing young students with computers was becoming essential. Her work was instrumental in keeping the Country Day community on the cutting edge of the information age.

RETIREES, JUNE 2018

At the end of the school year, faculty and staff gathered to bid farewell to seven retiring faculty and staff members, with a combined 176 years of service between them. Barbara Fackenthall and Donna Manning were celebrated as a duo - a duo that has worked as the Pre-Kindergarten team for more than two decades. After 42 years, Ms. Fels leaves the English Department, having taught in both Middle and High School, and served as both the Octagon advisor and college counselor. Lower School teacher Jane Gillette taught in both 2nd and 5th grade, and Lower School teaching assistant Aggie Geminder worked in several grades cheerfully helping a number of teachers. Sandy Lyon taught in the Middle School, serving as Head of Middle School for 11 years, and director of communications Julie Nelson spent 30 years at Country Day, first as a parent volunteer, and as the communications director for 22 years. Each of the retirees is a Country Day Lifer and then some. So we asked them the questions we typically pose in our alumni profile and include some of their answers here. PATRICIA FELS

Start date: 1976 My favorite Country Day spot is The Cave (in its many iterations on the campus. Some of my craziest, fondest memories have happened there, usually way too late at night. At Country Day, I learned that my dad was wrong when he said I’d eventually hate teaching and wish I’d gone to law school! For breakfast I had a cup of cherry yogurt, half a banana, and three cups of coffee. A little known fact about me: When I was young, I planned to have 12 children (all girls) and run a school like Jo March’s in “Little Men.” Once I had twins, I realized that two girls were enough - and that I wasn’t cut out for administration. BARBARA FACKENTHALL Start date: 1979 My favorite Country Day spot is the garden or watching the kids ride trikes on the black top. One memory I have from Country Day: The employee Fallen Leaf Lake Retreats - education, collaboration, friendship and laughter - Professional Growth at its finest. The last book I read: Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance. My favorite colors (in typical Pre-K fashion) are all the colors of the rainbow. For breakfast I had coffee, a banana and a handful of nuts. A little known fact about me: There’s a photo of me in the feature article of Chopper Magazine circa 1975.

JULIE NELSON

Start date: As a volunteer, 1986. They started paying me ten years later. My favorite Country Day spot: I love my desk with its view to the parking lot. Children walk by on their way to the bus when they’re leaving on field trips, dogs drool out windows when parents are picking up their kids in the carpool line, High School students in Ms. Fels’ English class run through the parking lot when she sends them outside to expend excess energy . . . The last book I read: Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult. My favorite color is red. For breakfast I had Honey Nut Cheerios. A little known fact about me: I ran into Richard Nixon on the beach in Hawaii and he was wearing shorts with dress shoes and black socks. I have a photo. DONNA MANNING Start date: 1998 My favorite Country Day spot is the little outside patio that the Procidas made for us behind the old Pre-K classroom. The last book I read: Lucky Boy by Shanthi Sekaran. For breakfast I had coffee and a bran muffin. A little known fact about me: I used to teach belly dancing.

AGGIE GEMINDER Start date:1999 A memory from my time at Country Day are the many Grandparents’ Day programs. The last book I read: Isabel Allende’s In the Midst of Winter. My favorite color is blue. For breakfast I had instant oatmeal with fruit. A little known fact about me: I played drums all through high school and college. SANDY LYON

Start date: 2000 My favorite Country Day spot is the vegetable garden. The last book I read: So far this year, the best one has been A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. My favorite color is blue or green or bluish green or greenish blue. For breakfast I had two eggs. A little known fact about me: I worked on a Navajo Reservation setting up a recreation program for the Navajo youth JANE GILLETTE Start date: 2002 My favorite Country Day spot is the 2G classroom. At Country Day, I learned the importance of community. The last book I read: The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World. My favorite color is purple. For breakfast I had oatmeal. A little known fact about me: When I was in middle school, I learned to ride a unicycle.   2017-18 Annual Report

ALUMNI NEWS 1986 Andrea Hauser Cadrett received recognition as a Stanislaus County 2017 teacher of the year in the TK-3rd grade division. Christopher Davis is an investment consultant at Scottrade. 1987 In Memoriam: Dan Erlandson passed away on May 16, 2017, in Stockton, CA. Dan worked in the radio industry and messages on his memorial page describe him as funny, well-spoken, clever, and always willing to lend a hand. Peter Buchman is a bassist in Sacramento. Kevin Mueller works as a senior associate attorney at the Feldhake Law Firm in Costa Mesa, CA. 1991 Nancy Lauletta* recently made the move from Houston to Austin, TX, where she teaches middle school French. “In my free time I travel a lot, ride bikes, and play with my black lab, Milton.” Mary O’Hagin Holt works at Honeywell as a vice president of financial planning and analysis. Megan Reitan lives in the Bay Area and writes, “my husband Graham and I bought a house last summer in Woodacre, a small unincorporated village in West Marin County. I started a job 1.5 years ago at Lucasfilm Ltd/ Industrial Light & Magic as their technology producer and just got my first non-Indie film credit on Solo: A Star Wars Story!” 1996 Shella Gilbert Hamill is a chief product officer at EcoUSA. Clayton Leek* graduated from Chico State with a degree in information technology. Clay works as deputy chief of smog check, engineering and IT services at the California Bureau of Automotive Repair. 1997 Allison Furry moved back to Sacramento, where she is working for the state in the office of emergency services. Tepring Piquado is running for State Assembly to represent District 54 in Los Angeles. Look for her name on the November ballot!

AMANDA MEEKER, ‘88 profile published February 2018 In a 2015 Sacramento Bee article, Country Day graduate Amanda Meeker referenced former teacher Dan Neukom as an example of someone who could make history come alive. He was a “great teacher” who “knew how to get to you,” she is quoted as saying, while citing his description of brain removal during Egyptian mummification. Amanda was appointed Executive Director of the California Museum in July 2015, after having led the museum’s exhibits and programs department since its founding in 1998. While it is unlikely she uses stories on mummification learned in ninth grade history in her current job, Amanda does endeavor to engage museum visitors with California history and create lasting impressions. In her time at the museum, she has developed or adapted dozens of exhibits, including ones on the California Hall of Fame, the Library of Congress’ Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial, and a retrospective of Sacramento native Ray Eames’ career in art and design. Occupation: Executive Director of the California Museum City I call home: Sacramento College and major: B.A. in History from UC Davis, M.A. in Public History from Sacramento State One memory I have from SCDS: In AP French, we would take Friday field trips to Ettore’s, then a small bakery with three or four tables. There we would review our latest assignment over croissants – I remember discussing books such as “L’Etranger” and “Candide,” and poetry by Rimbaud and Baudelaire. We were supposed to carry out the discussion solely in French, but I always peppered my sentences with English, much to Mme. Stone’s displeasure. My favorite Country Day spot: In the 1970s, there was a weeping willow tree out under the power lines where you could sit and watch burrowing owls popping in and out of their tunnels nearby. At Country Day, I learned: Everything — how to tell time, how to make a scale model out of foam core, how to diagram a sentence, how to develop a photograph in the darkroom, how to sing “This Land Is Your Land,” how to balance a chemical equation. (Never did learn the entire multiplication table, though.) The last book I read: The Path between the Seas by David McCullough (prep for a vacation to Panama). My favorite color is green. For breakfast, I had oatmeal, grapefruit, and coffee. Please choose one. Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate Sand or snow? Sand Sushi or pizza? Pizza Dogs or cats? Dogs, though I like cats too. PC or Mac? Mac, though I use a PC at work. A little-known fact about me: I’m a terrible procrastinator.

She is a frequent traveler (often with dog Millie in tow) who loves to collect souvenirs of her trips. This penchant for collecting is evident in Susan’s writing, much of which focuses on the relationship between place, memory, and objects. Her book, Luggage, was published in March 2018 and looks at the history of baggage, the evolution of travel across literature, film, and art, and the stories these travel items have to tell about displacement, home, gender, class, consumption, and labor. Susan also has a love of design and humor. (Her home in Winston-Salem was featured on Apartment Therapy in 2016.) Her next book, entitled Decorating a Room of One’s Own, is already in the works and will be published in October. The book spoofs home design and decorating culture using famous literary homes as the subjects. Occupation: English professor at Wake Forest University and writer City I call home: Winston-Salem, North Carolina College and major: Columbia University with a major in English and a minor in Creative Writing; M.A. in English Renaissance Theater History from King’s College London; M.A. and Ph.D. in English from New York University One memory I have from SCDS: I remember the smell of the wax we used to paste up The Octagon. My favorite Country Day spot was Fels’ classroom - and the Octagon’s little room. I spent a lot of time in those rooms. At Country Day, I learned: Everything. How to write. That’s the main thing. And I started to learn how to be a teacher. I think back to my classes with Ms. Fels, Ms. LaMay, and Mr. Neukom, and I remember the kinds of things they did in the classroom and how they handled particular situations. They treated their students with such respect and challenged us all. The last book I read: Emily Wilson’s new translation of The Odyssey. My favorite color is green. For breakfast, I had two fried eggs on toast. Please choose one. Chocolate or vanilla? Neither. I like salty things. Sand or snow? Sand. Definitely. Sushi or pizza? That’s tough. Maybe pizza? But I would be sad to lose sushi. Dogs or cats? Dogs. I don’t have anything against cats, but I have a dog named Millie, and I love her. PC or Mac? Mac. A little-known fact about me: I like living in the South.

SARAH GAITHER, ‘03 profile published October 2017 Sarah Gaither has always been curious about what impacts our social interactions. In High School, she was involved in almost every student group on campus. In college at UC Berkeley, this interest in social interactions led her to study psychology and identity. Sarah's first published research study showed that three-month old biracial infants look at faces differently than monoracial infants, something that had not been documented before and led Sarah, herself biracial, to peruse a career researching the topic. Sarah is an assistant professor at Duke University and runs the Duke Identity and Diversity Lab, where she focuses on how different types of contact with diversity shape how it is we see and treat each other across racial and gender group boundaries. She recently won the Association of Psychological Science's Rising Star award which recognizes outstanding psychological scientists at the earliest stages of their career. Occupation: Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience at Duke University City I call home: Durham, NC (we call it Bull City here!) College and major: UC Berkeley, B.A. in Social Welfare with a concentration in Psychology and a minor in Spanish; Tufts University, M.S. and Ph.D. in Social Psychology One memory I have from Country Day: Being a lifer at Country Day, I have so many memories from my time there. A few that stand out: our Sutter's Fort overnight in fourth grade where we got to arrest parents who were playing robber roles and throw them in jail, our sixth grade trip to space camp and doing flight simulations and eating that weird space ice cream, helping to brand the "Lady Cavs" as we called ourselves on the basketball team (I wish I still had that sweatshirt with that logo!), Grands and Friends Day was always so happy, paste-up nights for Octagon and the late night trips to Denny's to celebrate being up way too late on a school night...I have told others about my time at SCDS and all of the trips and let's just say everyone has been jealous. My favorite SCDS spot: The basketball court on a game day. At SCDS, I learned how to multi-task-between band, sports, newspaper, class, student government, volunteering for the Classics sale each year...I was definitely never bored. The last book I read: Does watching Game of Thrones count? My favorite colors are purples and browns. For breakfast, I had an English muffin with pesto, tomato and an egg. Please choose one. Chocolate or vanilla? In line with my biracial research, I have to say both. Sand or snow? Sand. There is nothing like the feeling of sand between your toes on the beach. Sushi or pizza? Sushi—the CA stereotype that I fully endorse now that I live in NC. Dogs or cats? Definitely dogs, nothing beats how excited they are to see you when you get home. PC or Mac? PC but people have tried to convert me. A little known fact about me: I have an avocado and pesto obsession.
