Founded in 1964, Sacramento Country Day School is an independent, coeducational college preparatory school for students in grades PK–12 and admits students without regard to race, color, gender orientation, religion, or national or ethnic origin. It does not discriminate in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, financial aid programs, athletics programs, employment practices, or other school-administered programs. Country Day is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and is accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The school is a member of the Bay Area Teacher Development Collaborative, International COVER ART: “One Line,” by senior Bella Mathisen, Class of 2019.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends, It has been a noteworthy year of accomplishments for our school. Members of the Class of 2019 were admitted to a wide variety of top colleges and universities and offered more than $1.5 million dollars in merit aid, with one student offered a fullride scholarship and two students offered full-tuition scholarships. As I write this, our graduates are setting off to goodfit colleges and universities including Harvey Mudd, University of Pennsylvania, New York University, Rhode Island School of Design, Cal Poly, Stanford, and University of California campuses including Berkeley, Santa Barbara, and Davis. Two will play college athletics at Division III schools, four will attend arts programs, and several others were offered undergraduate research grants. Our graduates are prepared and eager for the next chapter in their lives, and I am confident they will thrive as they meet new and diverse challenges. Guided by our supportive Board of Trustees and led by Board President Julie Sloat, our school made considerable progress over the past year toward implementing our five-year Strategic Plan. Thank you to Julie for her leadership and to all our trustees for their commitment to our school.
High School classes, increasing the number and range of offerings in the Middle School elective curriculum, and providing an additional Lower School science specialist to expand our STEM program. In addition to the many parent volunteers who have helped with events, field trips, projects and in classrooms this year, I would like to especially thank Lainie Josephson and Michelle Kessel-Harbart, who served as both Auction Co-Chairs and Parents’ Association Co-Presidents, as well as Ethan Jackson and Elizabeth Monasa who once again guided our Annual Fund Drive. Their dedication, time, and talents were invaluable. Finally, thank you to our dedicated Country Day faculty and staff who work each day to make our school a truly special learning community. This year as part of our Strategic Plan, we saw the creation of two new advanced computer labs, the expansion of our STEM program, and the development of a new schedule for the Middle and High Schools aimed at personalizing and innovating the student learning experience by reimagining our time and schedule to maximize student learning. Thanks to your support in the 2018-19 school year, Country Day made key investments in several areas, including supporting our faculty and staff through continued education and training and increasing the range of programmatic offerings throughout the school. Some examples include Lower School faculty training in Responsive Classroom techniques, six new Greeting the students and parents at the morning carpool line is a favorite part of Mr. Thomsen’s day.

In 2018, Country Day collected a record-breaking 528 turkeys despite an unprecedented school closure following the Paradise Fire near Chico, CA. After helping to load the trucks, High School seniors Jack Christian, Luca Procida, and Blake Lincoln are ready to deliver the birds to the Sacramento Food Bank’s annual turkey drive. 2018-19 ANNUAL REPORT

STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE In the 2018-19 school year, Country Day made significant progress on several key areas of its Strategic Plan and its goal to “Personalize and Innovate the Student Experience.� PERSONALIZE: On October 8, Country Day held a day-long Teacher In-Service Training Day. Lower School faculty spent the day conducting Responsive Classroom Training aimed at advancing our social-emotional learning curriculum. The training gave teachers new tools and resources to help them continue to develop highly inclusive and respectful classroom environments. On the same day, our Teaching and Learning Committee arranged a variety of workshop sessions for our Middle and High School faculty with topics ranging from assessment strategies and grading to new technology and CavNET functionality. Both the professional development day in October and the hiring of additional Learning Specialists for the 2019-20 school year continues to provide our faculty with a wide-range of tools to support our students and create personal approaches to learning. INNOVATE: Since August 2018, Country Day has made progress on innovating the student experience through the creation of two new computer labs with plans to expand computer science offerings across all three divisions and create a program unlike any school in our area. In advancement of our Strategic Plan goal to "enhance, develop, and implement school-wide Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math programs that differentiate Country Day from competitor schools," in 2018-19 Country Day designed a new course offering called Advanced Topics in Computer Science. This course is a specialized study within an area of Computer Science that combines guided reading and research with a significant individual or group project component. Future students will have the opportunity to participate in a work placement program, giving them hands-on experience in the workplace. In 2018-19 Country Day also received the 2018 College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science Principles. The award recognizes schools that are closing the gender gap and engaging more female students in computer science coursework in AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A. Out of more than 18,000 secondary schools worldwide that offer AP courses, Country Day is one of only 685 schools to accomplish this.

Our teachers’ enthusiasm and dedication to being the best they can be is inspiring.
RESPECT: In June and August 2018, our entire Lower School faculty spent four days of their summer break immersing themselves in a study of Responsive Classroom. Led by a facilitator from the Center for Responsive Schools, teachers honed their skills in a research-based approach to teaching and learning that focuses on creating a safe, respectful, positive learning environment. Responsive Classroom techniques will help our teachers enhance the sense of belonging, significance, and fun that is necessary for deep learning to take place. CREATE: On May 8, we announced a new personalized and innovative approach to our student learning experience by “reimagining our time and schedule to maximize student learning” with new Middle and High School daily schedules that will support student learning and improve the faculty experience. The new schedules, which will be implemented in August 2019, were developed over several months by a Scheduling Committee, chaired by Head of High School Brooke Wells, and made up of committee members including Head of Middle School Rommel Loria and key faculty and staff. The committee thoroughly evaluated the existing daily schedules for Middle and High School students and created new schedules in which academic classes meet five times during the six-day cycle with electives meeting every other day. The schedules also extend classes (from 45 minutes to 52 minutes), provide passing time, and add flex time. In the High School, flex time is designed to be used in a variety
of ways including student academic and emotional support, performing arts rehearsal, club time, advisory, and schoolwide gatherings, while alleviating the pressure of all co-curricular events taking place at lunch, after school, or at the expense of class time. In the Middle School, flex time will be used for advisory, with the flexibility to schedule cocurricular programming.

DONORS TO THE COUNTRY DAY SCHOLARS PROGRAM The Country Day Scholars Program provides two new incoming ninth-grade students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to access the college preparatory curriculum at Sacramento Country Day High School. This need- and merit-based scholarship program’s goal is to make Country Day High School accessible to exceptional students with notable potential in one or more of the following areas: academics, leadership, innovation, the arts, and service. Students selected as Country Day Scholars receive a guaranteed four-year high school scholarship towards tuition, textbooks, class trips, one-on-one college counseling, an SAT preparation course, and a school-issued laptop computer. The Country Day Scholars Program is supported, in part, by the Fund-a-Need paddle raise at the auction, this year raising $46,700. We continue to be grateful to the Harry C. & Deborah L. Elliott Family Foundation for their support, which allowed the school to launch the Country Day Scholars Program in 2017, and their generous gifts to the endowed Harry C. & Deborah L. Elliott Family Foundation Scholarship Fund that will continue to support the Country Day Scholars Program in perpetuity. Caribbean beach party on Saturday evening, May 18, for the school’s 42nd annual auction, this year held on the Country Day campus. Resort-wear and sunglasses were the dress code, and the unseasonable rainstorm didn’t hinder enthusiastic bidders from raising close to $148,000 plus $46,700 for the Country Day Scholars Program. The gymnasium opened for cocktails and silent auction bidding, and then attendees strolled to Edwards Plaza where long tables and family-style service greeted guests under a fully decorated tent. The fun continued after the final bid with a lively dance party!

The Francie Tidey Award for Excellence in Education was established in 2001 by the Alumni Association to honor Francie Tidey, longtime Head of High School, college counselor, and English teacher. The award recognizes a member of the faculty or administration who has made an outstanding contribution to the Country Day community during his or her tenure. The award is presented at the High School graduation ceremony.

This year’s recipient, Glenn Mangold, was announced by Erin Reddy, class of 2015, who remembers Mr. Mangold’s quiet sense of humor, his dedication to students, and his ability to keep students of all levels engaged in the subject matter. “He excelled at making the mechanics of physics accessible to the new freshmen while also helping the most advanced seniors understand BC level Calculus and Physics C. During class, he explained the most complex concepts in ways students could understand, always challenging us to think beyond the lesson, and creating bonus questions for those who wanted them. His excellent teaching is what inspired many of us to love math, science, and problem solving.” Erin added that a repeated comment from a number of former students referenced Mr. Mangold’s wide-ranging knowledge beyond his subject matter and his willingness to talk with students about almost any subject.

WISHING OUR RETIREES THE BEST! This year’s group of retiring employees has experienced a long and varied career at Country Day. During Sue Nellis’s 37-year career, she taught history to Middle and High School students, served as head of the High School, advised the yearbook, and at some point early in her tenure, taught jazzercise and badminton electives. Thirty-two years ago, when classes were held mostly in portable buildings and the lunch program was prepared by parent volunteers, Carol Wessels came to Country Day. Hired as the bookkeeper, she became staff accountant in 1992 and the controller in 2000. For most of his 21 years at Country Day, Michael Covey was in the High School science lab, teaching chemistry, first to the 10th grade and later the Advanced Placement course to the seniors. After leaving the chemistry department in 2006, he returned to the school two years later to work as the garden coordinator. For 25 years, Latin teacher Jane Batarseh introduced her students to what they may have thought to be a dead language, but she gave it life, introducing her students to not only verb conjugations and vocabulary, but also Roman architecture with tours of the local Arden Hills Club and trips abroad to Rome, Florence, and Pompeii, as well as an annual toga walk to Loehmann’s Plaza, and bocce lessons at East Portal Park.

In Memoriam: Rolf Keltner^ passed away January 26, 2019. Rolf’s obituary, published in the Sacramento Bee in June, notes his love of family, cooking, hiking, dancing, fishing, sailing, making things, reading, and feeding people and the joy he felt through his work as a special education teacher. Rolf worked at the Scotten School in Grass Valley, where they recently dedicated a bench in his memory.

“Depending on who asks,” writes Larisa Malakoff Valentin*, “I'm a full-time mom, reformed banking lawyer, or ski bum. I live in Whistler, B.C., having left a career as an in-house banking lawyer in London, England, to become a full-time mother. I moved to a small ski resort in Canada 12 years ago. My two kids are leaving the nest for college, so I'm contemplating how to write this next chapter of my life.” Robert Padjen spent the month of July visiting grandchildren and travelling to Chicago and Northern California. Robert shared some brief updates from his class: Peter Buchman lives in Sacramento, still plays bass and takes lots of cute cat pictures. Dave Farley continues to write grants and consult, and currently works for the city of North Las Vegas in addition to his company Grant Doctors. Alex Gronke is editorial lead at True Thirty. Erik Mukerjee was just promoted to Group Leader of Biometical Microsystems at Lawerence Livermore Labs. His daughter Ella is four. Julissa Neely is making music (julissaneely.com) and living in California. Joseph Villa, wife Heather and daughter Sage live in Roseburg, Oregon, where Joseph is an associate professor of chemistry at Umpqua Community College.

Rachel Brown Hester graduated in May with a master’s degree from Duke University as a Family Nurse Practitioner. “I accepted a fellowship in Charlotte, NC, in Hospice and Palliative Care. I also have four beautiful kids.” In September
2018, Adam Nelson* joined ProEquity Asset Management as managing director. Adam is focused on the firm’s private client asset management business as well as identifying and executing acquisition opportunities throughout California. Megan Reitan and husband, Graham, moved to West Marin two years ago and now name the San Geronimo Valley and Point Reyes as their regular stomping grounds. Megan works at ILM/ Lucasfilm, where she manages the global technology budget, headcount and project operations for all of ILM's global studios and in support of all ILM's and Lucasfilm's movies.

Jessica Niles DeHoff is based in Beijing with her husband John and their two cats. Jessica recently completed Grief is Pink, a chapbook of poems and paintings that grew out of her experience of caring for her mother, Blanca, as she was dying in 2018. The book is being considered by several publishers. This summer she's the international artist in residence at Rimbun Dahan Arts Centre in Malaysia. Jay Roth* and wife Lisa own and operate a packaging and shipping store in Sacramento called Box Brothers. “We opened on July 1, 2009, and we are hoping to expand in the near future.”

Jack Crawford’s career in “company building” has taken him from CPA to entrepreneur to venture capitalist. After working in the accounting industry, Jack enrolled in graduate school at UC Davis. He was taking business courses while launching a tech startup on the side. Ultimately, the demands of the startup required him to leave the graduate program. Jack went on to work in startups for the next few years with, as he puts it, “some wins and some losses” before starting his own venture capital firm. Today, he is a founding general partner at Impact Venture Capital. Jack’s three children attend Country Day, with the oldest graduating in 2020. In middle school, I became friends with Tony Coss. KRISTOFFER HALL ‘91 Profile published March 2019 Kristoffer Hall remembers the Marin Headlands trip as a highlight of his 5th grade year at Country Day. The trip is chaperoned by parents, and his father joined the class on the overnight excursion. Last year, Kristoffer was the one wearing the chaperone hat when son and current Country Day student Wyatt attended the same field trip. “Being a chaperone for Wyatt’s class to the Headlands last year really brought it full circle. I am constantly amazed by the kids at Country Day, and happy to have been one myself.” Kristoffer attended high school at Jesuit and college at Santa Clara. Today he owns his own consulting business and performs business valuations and economic damages analyses. His company, Hall Valuation Consulting, is a multi-year sponsor of the school’s annual auction. Marion Kerr continues her acting career in Los Angeles. Most recently, she has appeared in a national Massage Envy commercial and TV shows Jane the Virgin and the Facebook Watch show, We Need to Talk. Marion loves travelling and recently returned from 10 days in England. After placing second during the 2018 midterm election for State Assembly District 54, Tepring Piquado started a new role as chief policy director for an organization called California Issues Forum. She is based in Los Angeles and spends two to three days a week during the legislative session in Sacramento, living with retired history teacher Sue Nellis and her husband Mark. The other days of the week, Tepring is still at RAND doing research and teaching ethics at their graduate school.

Nick Kindelt writes that he and wife Mary have a “three-year-old son who keeps us very busy.” Nick works for the University of Tulsa, planning donor events for both the University and Gilcrease Museum. Taryn Tyler Williams still lives in D.C., but has left the federal government to work for the nonprofit Center for American Progress, focusing

Andrew Price lives in Santa Monica and writes that he is “working at a business I started with two friends in 2014, after shifting from journalism to the tech industry.” Andrew is still playing soccer and has taken up surfing. He adds, “I've been trying to live as car-free a life as I can, as a personal challenge, so I'm also finally getting familiar with LA's Metro system. I see Chloe Ellers and Tepring Piquado every once in a while. Any other Cavs living in, or visiting, the LA area are encouraged to get in touch.”

Megan Carney* lives in San Francisco and works as a child therapist for Contra Costa County. She enjoys writing, hiking, and traveling in her spare time. Mohit Mehtani and wife Chrissy were thrilled to welcome their new baby boy, Sidni Oliver Mehtani on July 7. ”His 18-month-old sister Sabina, however, was not as thrilled. JESSICA VANDO ‘92 profile published December 2018 Jessica Vando began her Country Day journey in Kindergarten. By the time she got to High School, Jessica was active in student government, busy with after-school sports teams, and taking leadership roles in student publications. A member of the Cum Laude honor society, she did all these things while staying focused on her school work. After graduation, Jessica headed east to Harvard for college. More than 20 years would pass, after stints in the Bay Area, Washington state, and Los Angeles, before Jessica called Sacramento home once again. Today, she is a clinical psychologist in private practice and has returned to Country Day as an alumni volunteer and parent. She and husband Tim Milberger have a son in third grade and another who will join the school in Kindergarten next year. Occupation: Clinical Psychologist College: Harvard University, AB Cum Laude English & American Literature & Language; University of Washington, Ph.D. Child Clinical Psychology One memory I have from Country Day: Everything Octagon. The fun and hard work of late night paste up. The excitement of winning awards. The pride and satisfaction of writing a tight feature story or editorial and putting out a particularly well done issue. The way the parent body rallied around the paper and the staff when we published a controversial story. The way the faculty, administration, and Board engaged in a dialogue with us about said story allowing us to express our point of view and learn how we could do better in in future. Being on staff all four of my High School years and editor in chief my senior year was the defining experience of my Country Day career. “After decades of living as a Californian (with some jaunts to New York and Paris in between), I'll be relocating to Texas this summer” writes Jessica Goldman Laskey. Jessica will work as the program manager of Arts and Letters Live! at the Dallas Museum of Art while her husband completes his Ph.D. in Humanities at University of Texas at Dallas. Jessica is still writing and performing, but adds, “now I’ll be doing all of that in cowboy boots!” Aaron Harris retired from the army in 2012 with the rank of captain. He and his wife have an English Mastiff dog and a Siamese cat and live in the Bay Area where Aaron is the operations manager for the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California. Jennifer Lopez Branshaw was named the chief executive officer of the Milwaukee charter school network Carmen Schools of Science and Technology, where 90% of the more than 2,000 students come from families with low-incomes. Kelsey Lyon graduated in May from Boston University with a master’s in Divinity. “I am reappointing in the Air Force Reserves as a Chaplain while working for my church's headquarters in Boston, MA. I also got married in September of 2018 and became a stepmother.” Yuko Takegoshi recently completed her BS in computer science, graduating magna cum laude from the University of Maryland University College. She moved to Florida with her boyfriend in May 2018 and works remotely as a software engineer, supporting software for developing roadmaps. Yuko is a certified Scuba Instructor and is working toward more technical scuba certifications that
would allow her to safely go on deeper, longer dives, as well as cave diving.

Corey Alling cites Ms. Schweizer’s art classes at Country Day for kickstarting his love of design. “I followed that passion with digital art and communication courses in college.” Corey has been employed for eight years at a firm involved in environmental, urban, natural resources, and climate planning, providing graphic support for marketing purposes and a wide range of projects. And, if you live in the Bay Area and are looking for a new hobby, check out the recreational adult dodgeball league (RAD League) in Oakland, that Corey has owned and operated since 2016. “The league provides a great outlet to meet new friends as an adult, get exercise, and relieve stress through play.” Jeffrey Brodovsky moved back to Sacramento and now works at Sutter Medical Center Family Medicine Residency as a Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine attending. Christelle Follette shares, “my husband Luis, our English Bulldog Rosie, and I just moved across the country to continue my training as a veterinary surgeon at VCA Animal Specialty Group in Glendale, CA. We’re very excited to be close to home again after being in Ohio for two years.” After five years with Lyft, Chelsea Wilson Harrison has taken a new position as the head of communications at hims & hers, a company with the mission of making it easier for people to access care and treatment for the conditions that impact their daily lives.
CHELSEA WILSON HARRISON ‘05 Profile published September 2018 Country Day lifer Chelsea Wilson Harrison practiced her communication skills as both a thespian and journalism student in high school. The poise she developed on the Country Day stage, along with a mastery of the written word honed as editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, have served Chelsea well in her careers in politics and communications. After college at USC, Chelsea worked on political campaigns in Sacramento. In 2011, she moved to DC, where she worked at a public affairs firm and then as a press secretary for a Congressman on the Hill. In 2014, Chelsea made the move back to California to take a job at Lyft. She and her husband, Mason, live in the Bay Area. Occupation: Director of Communications, Lyft City I call home: San Francisco, CA College: University of Southern California, English and political science One memory I have from Country Day: As an SCDS lifer, there are too many good memories to count! But getting roasted by Fels and Neukom at graduation (as proud Stanford alumni, they never let me live down going to USC) was definitely a highlight. I'm pretty sure there is a picture somewhere of Fels shaking red and gold pompoms across the stage... My favorite Country Day spot: The Cave, Ms. LaMay's room, and backstage of the MP room before a performance. At Country Day, I learned how to think critically, how to write, how to be an active member of a community and the joy that can bring, and the power of truly great teachers. The last book I read: Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, by John Barreyrou.
Christina Stainbrook ‘06 married Shane Emerson in October and enjoyed a ceremony full of family, friends, and dinosaurs. Christina is working toward her teaching credential and master’s in education and teaching part-time at Country Day.
Rachel Winfield ‘07 is based in New York and travelling around the country as the stage manager on a Broadway tour with “Anastasia.” She will be on tour for another year, until August 2020.

Victoria and Wayland postponed their honeymoon to perform their annual duty managing a theme camp at Burning Man. Morgan Murphrey* graduated from Creighton Medical School in May and has matched with the UC Davis Medical Center Dermatology residency program. Parker Murray completed a master’s in integrated product design from the University of Pennsylvania this spring and moved to New York. Alyxandra Vernon served as editor-in-chief of the UC Hastings Law journal before graduating this spring and in September started a clerkship for Judge Edward J. Davila of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. In the summer of 2020 she will begin a highly competitive year-long clerkship with Judge William A. Fletcher of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Michael Ingram graduated as the inaugural chief resident from the UC Riverside School of Medicine Psychiatry Program and is doing a one-year fellowship at UCLA/ Cedars-Sinai in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry. According to Michael, that is essentially a combination of Neurology, Neuropsychiatry, Addiction Medicine, Maternal Mental Health, HIV Psychiatry, Primary Care Psychiatry/Integrated care, and Inpatient Medicine Psychiatry Consultation services.

Peter Mancina and Brooks Rollins were married in Clarksburg, CA, in June. With the hashtag #westcoastbestcoast, Nicky Mehtani bid farewell to Baltimore after eight years for a move to San Francisco where she is doing an Addiction Medicine Fellowship with the Division of HIV, ID & Global Medicine at UC San Francisco and the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Isabel Siragusa lives in San Francisco and works at the California Shakespeare Theater in the East Bay as their communications manager. Stephen Vogel married Suzanna Dupee in Chapel Hill, NC. Bradley Antognini is a logistic readiness operator in the U.S. Air Force. He was based at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs for three years before moving to Germany where he was assigned to Spangdahlem Air Base and promoted to Captain. Bradley has deployed twice: to Qatar for seven months in 2017, and to Romania for four months in 2019. In May of 2020, Bradley leaves Germany for Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii. Miles Bennett-Smith completed a master’s degree in policy, organization, and leadership studies from Stanford’s Graduate School of Education. Seth Katz works in undergraduate admissions at Sarah Lawrence College as an assistant director. He continues to write and recently interviewed novelist Brian Birnbaum for the literary magazine The Millions. Seth has a short story coming

In March, Camille Getz wrote, “I recently moved to Los Angeles (with my fiancé, Chris) after living in NYC for six years. I'm working as a film and video editor, freelancing for a wide variety of clients and projects ranging from commercials and music videos to broadcast news segments. My job allows me to work from home quite a bit, which gives me lots of time to spend with our St. Bernard mix, Benny. Our free time is currently being spent planning our wedding, taking place in Brooklyn next fall. Life is good!” Adam Pinson lives in Boston, MA, and works as a systems engineer for Signify (formerly known as Philips Lighting).

Annelise Bryan Eastes and husband, Josh, were married last year and live in Las Vegas. Since graduating from Butler University, Annelise has continued her dance career with several professional companies and is signed with multiple agencies as a dancer and model. She is a U.S. Olympic Committee certified personal trainer and published an e-book on Amazon called The New Rules of Cross Training for Dancers. “My plans for the future are to continue performing for as long as I can and to someday run my own dance company or agency.” Wanning Liu graduated from UC Santa Cruz and is a financial investment manager working on different infrastructure projects for China Harbour Engineering Company in Sri Lanka. Brandon Mysicka lives in Venice, CA, and works as a composer/songwriter for TV, film, video games, and pop music.

Lara Kong graduated from University of the Pacific in May with a degree in music therapy. She will be interning in Anaheim. Lauren Larrabee earned a BFA in art studio with a minor in feminist and gender studies from Colorado College. After graduation, she moved to Denver and works as an e-commerce product specialist at MadSportsStuff. Claire Pinson graduated magna cum laude from Harvard and was a finalist for the Francis H. Burr Award, given to a senior who combines the qualities of character, leadership, scholarship, and athletic ability. With a major in psychology and a minor in East Asian studies, Claire is spending a year doing research at the University of Tokyo Hospital in their Department of Psychosomatic Medicine. Maxwell Shukuya graduated summa cum laude from UC Santa Cruz, with a degree in literature. He is pursuing a master’s at the University of Cologne in Germany. Isabella Tochterman writes, “I am currently a (rising) super-senior at NYU, studying Psychology and Computer Science. I’m doing research in phase detection with parallel programs as well as in perception. I plan on studying for the LSAT come graduation, and I eventually hope to fight for women’s rights.” Emma Williams graduated from Cornell University with degrees in biology and government. She has moved to Boston for a two-year clinical research position in the orthopaedics department at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She plans to attend medical school.
Jianna Gudebski ‘13 enjoys a beverage with mom, Marcie. Jianna lives in West Hollywood and is working in TV, commercials, and as a voiceover actress and taking improv classes at The Groundlings School.
In her final year at Stanford, Ellie Kupperman ‘16 is majoring in human biology with a concentration in global maternal-child health and minoring in theater and performance studies. Ellie also performs professionally with Woodminster Summer Musicals in Oakland, CA, appearing in “Newsies” (above) and “Billy Ellliot” this summer. Last year, she studied abroad in Australia with 36 other Stanford students in a marine biology program, and this summer she worked in an early education/developmental psychology research lab on campus.

Isabelle Leavy ‘17 lights incense at Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar. Isabelle spent four months traveling the world with the Semester at Sea program. Taking regular college classes while on the ship, Isabelle also got ample time to explore each of the places they stopped and highly recommends the program. “We visited Japan, China, Vietnam, Myanmar, India, Mauritius, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco, and the Netherlands, and I spent a good month traveling through Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia”

Zoe Dym is a DJ for University of Hawaii's on-campus radio station, KTUH FM Honolulu. “I go by the name of DJ California Roll. This is a great gig because it's given me so many connections to the music scene in Hawaiʻi.” After graduating in the spring, she hopes to continue working in public radio.

University of Washington student Avneet Bhullar worked at the Seattle Children’s Research Institute this summer. “Our lab
is studying Group B Strep infection during pregnancy as well as the Zika virus. As a global health minor, the biology of infectious disease especially one that affects women all over the world who don’t have the same maternal, prenatal health care that many women in the states do - is very interesting to me. Additionally, the coursework I’m completing as part of my anthropology minor is exposing me to the importance of women’s health advocacy globally.” Cornell University student Marigot Fackenthal is majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in astronomy. She led the women’s fencing team as the vice captain this year, earned NCAA Fencing National Championship Institutional Alternate status, and was recently inducted into Cornell University’s “400 Club,” which honors varsity student-athletes who achieve perfect 4.0 semester grade point averages. In addition to athletics, Marigot has worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant as well as a research assistant in Cornell’s Bewley Applied Turbulence Lab.
2018
Amalie Fackenthal competed with the Stanford Swimming and Diving Team that won both the 2019 PAC-12 Championship and the 2019 NCAA Division 1 National Championship. At the NCAA Championship, Amalie earned five All-American honors, placing 13th individually in the 100 Freestyle, as well as in the top eight in four relay teams, the 200/400 Free Relays and 200/400 Medley Relays.
