Crazy Cartoons
Ramble On: Whenever the month of March roles around, I inevitably think of Dr. Seuss and a smile immediately comes to my face. I thought I’d share some fun facts about one of my favorite authors with all of you.
Theodor Seuss Geisel (Seuss really was his middle name)
Produced animated training films for soldiers during WWII
First book, “And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street” rejected by 27 publishers
Was dared by a friend to write a book using only 50 words…”Green Eggs and Ham” Braz I am..
By Ebony E. On Friday February 16th River View High School held our second annual Black History month celebration. As always, it was a well put together celebration by students and staff. The focus was on Bob Marley and the reggae culture and their contributions to music and the African American Culture. As we walked into the auditorium, the band was already playing some reggae music to set the tone. The show began with a power point presentation read by Wesley and then followed by Marissa. The slides began with a focus on Bob Marley’s inspiration for music, Sam Cooke. A highlight at this point, was a solo by our own Portia singing,” A Change Is Gonna Come”
Cooke. If you missed this amazing performance, you can catch it on the Hawk’s Nest Radio. She rocked the house down! The art work on the wall was created by students that were inspired by Bob Marley and his music. Artwork is currently on display in the Library and other locations within the building. The slides continued with some basic facts about Bob Marley and these were intertwined with concert footage and his music. The band played well together and the music flowed nicely. The audience sang along using the words that were on the screen. Every one had a good time and the audience appreciated the work everyone put in to get to this day.
Special thanks to Mr. Crecco, Ms. Levy, Mr. Liberth, Mr. Welsh and Ms. Piccone for their help and hard work to put this together.

What Would Yoda Do? Yoda’s Response Dear Yoda,
Dear Spring,
Spring has arrived and I unfortunately still don’t have a girlfriend to share this joyous time with. I’ve always pictured my girlfriend and I holding hands while taking a walk outside in a park, admiring the flowers and the birds. Do you think I should just take a chance and ask someone out? But I’m so nervous; I don’t think I could do that right. Please great master, I need your help.
Why so fixated are you on finding this one person? To embrace nature this magnificent time is, with or without someone special. Instead of taking that walk with your girlfriend, walk you should with just a friend. Not for stress spring is for, but for fun and laughter it is. If take a chance you must, then take a chance you should. Be prepared you should however, if turn out how you planned it does not.
From, Spring Fling Fever
May the Force be with you, Master Yoda
Yoda’s Response Dear Yoda,
Dear Easter,
My family is very religious and we celebrate Easter every year, which is an important day in our religion. I used to go to church all the time and I used to love going and spending the day with my family. The problem is, this year and for the past few years, I haven’t wanted to participate in the celebrations. I don’t feel like hanging out with my family, I don’t really want to go to church, and I don’t want to be religious anymore quite frankly. I’m not sure what to do; I don’t know how I’m going to tell my family without hurting them. Help me Yoda!
Tricky this situation may seem. Not wish to hurt your loved ones you do, but participate in their customs you do not. A suggestion I may have for you. Consider you must, sitting them down and simply talking to them. Love you your family does, support your decision they may not, but respect it they will. Faith you should always have, but your chose it is as to what to believe in. If to not go to church you wish, then not go you should. Only a lie you would be living, not your true self you would be. Much time to think you should take.
Best regards, All Easter’d Out
May the Force be with you, Master Yoda

Ralph McQuarrie: R.I.P. June 13, 1929 – March 3, 2012 By Joe W. The Star Wars and art world lost a great man and visionary on Saturday, March 3rd, 2012. The concept artist behind the “Star Wars” movies, Ralph McQuarrie passed away on Saturday from a currently unknown cause of death. The artist took director and creator George Lucas’ vision of his “Star Wars” world and characters, and made them real by painting their concept look. McQuarrie's conceptual designs for the first trilogy of the “Star Wars” films introduced iconic characters such as Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO to the world.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of such a visionary artist and such a humble man…Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars. His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy.” Lucas said in a statement. His part in Star Wars was not only behind the scenes, but also on screen. He was so important for the films that Lucas gave him a part in the “Star Wars” film, The Empire Strikes Back, as General Pharl McQuarrie.
McQuarrie also created concept art for the original Battlestar Galactica TV show and for the movies "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and 1985's "Cocoon," for which he won the Academy Award for Visual Effects. He was a great artist and an amazingly humble guy as described by Mr. Lucas and the cast and crew. His artwork was the backbone behind the Star Wars world and helped put the movies on the fast track to super stardom. He will most certainly be missed and we will never forget his contribution to the movie business.
South Korea Cloning A Wooly Mammoth By Tom B. In South Korea a group of scientists at the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation plan to clone a real wooly mammoth and bring it to life. To help aid them they formed a research pact with Russia's NorthEastern Federal University, and plan to clone this mammoth from remains found in Siberia dating back to almost 4,500 years ago. They intend to replace the nuclei of egg cells from an Indian elephant with cells taken from the mammoth’s somatic cells which would
hopefully reproduce embryos with the mammoths DNA. The leader of the Sooam BRF, Hwang Woo-suk, is a controversial professor in Korea from when a few years ago he proclaimed to have created human stem cells from a cloned embryo. However investigators later found out that he falsified his results, and had his license suspended for a two year period. He did however successfully clone Snuppy, the world’s first cloned dog
back in 2005, and more recently cloned an endangered American coyote. This has been a controversial issue though, the idea of cloning and brining back an extinct species to life. It would also upset natural ecosystems if reintroduced into the wild. Despite having this said, the researchers plan on proceeding with their intent, and it is expected to have been successfully cloned within 5 years time.

The Hawk’s Nest
Sweet Agony
Before you, I am struck with awe Effortlessly you continually draw
I am only a fraud
my gaze Admire you and adore you I do Unending is my passion for you Time and time again, you always take my breath away I cannot stand how I still do not even know your name For I am too shy to make myself known to you Uneasily I impatiently await the day we shall become one
I hide my true self I lie to others to get by And I talk when I should yell Never has there been a liar As lonely as I I suppose that this is my fate To be alone as I die I am only a fraud I have never told the truth Whether it be in my prime Or rather in my youth You will never really understand The pain that I must hide The deceit behind my smile And the sincerity in my lies
That Cursed Voice
Lost I would be without you, I will
Your voice is everlasting
wait for you no matter how long it takes
It nests within the confines of my ear You won’t seem to leave to make sure that I hear But now I see that smile of yours in my dreams
~ Tom B.
I am only a fraud
Like the one you had after we kissed
I will not reveal my face
Bliss
For the fear that lies behind my eyes
Phooey, a word with no meaning
Beside you, I will always be Unyielding is my love for you Regardless of how you treat
Is matched with my disgrace
Bliss is for the lucky ones
me, I will be yours
Do I look lucky to you? ~ Joe W.
When I see you in my head
Never shall I leave you, even
My dreams change different hues
after these scars
What were once bright colors now turn to shades of gray
Effortlessly, you win my heart
And I still can’t get your voice out of my damned ear.
Destiny of ill mattered fate
~ Joe W.
has made me unable to leave you ~ Tom B.
Pi Day ‘12 Highlights! A Pi-tastic Day! By Ebony E. River View High School celebrated our 2nd annual PI day on March 14th; of course this year’s celebration was unlike any other. Our math department created T–shirts with “Occu -
River View” as well as served the entire school slices of pie during lunch. Students created projects such as posters, animations, games, math trivia, jokes and research papers; one included
Ryan D. memorizing 102 digits of pi on March 14th, 2012. For those of you who do not trust the authenticity of this contest, there were two witnesses.
