By Cyndi Spencer Whether you’re a seasoned mom going through this for the millionth time, or you’re first time parents freaking out about going back to work, you’ve probably Googled, “questions to ask your daycare provider” more than a few times. Armed with your list of questions, you interview a half dozen providers—but, have you asked the most important questions? Do you LIKE this person? Think about it. You’re not just hiring a warm body, you’re inviting in an extension of your family. Some days, they’ll spend more awake time with your child than you will. Sure, you can hire the person with the most perfect answers to all the expert questions, but can you comfortably talk to them about your child? We’ve all had friends and colleagues recommend, “OMG, the most perfect daycare!” only to arrive for a tour and be underwhelmed, or worse, put off. The director seems cold or is just way too touchy feely for your taste. You know what that means? It’s NOT the perfect place for you and your family. Choosing childcare is an incredibly personal decision. We’re told over and over to base our choice on answers to lists created by experts, but I’m going to tell you a secret—childcare providers know all the right answers to those questions—they’ve been asked them a million times. This is a high stake, emotional investment you’re about to make. There are fewer feelings in the world that are worse than dropping your toddler off with a teacher that you just don’t ‘click’ with. In six months, that list of questions you asked will have left your mind, when your daily drop-offs are nightmare scream fests. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 13)

Can you TALK to this person? When asked for my advice, I always tell my friends to have a real conversation with their prospective care provider. Talk about some gritty issues. Dig a little into their time-out policy or their meal policy, or whatever is very important to you. Because, if you can’t have open, free conversations with this person, you may just be setting yourself up for moving your child from daycare to daycare. Maybe they won’t have the most perfect answer, but if you can actually have a real conversation about things, you’re going to spend your days much more secure in your choice.
In my time as a daycare provider, I got more than a few new clients because they were “unhappy” with their old providers. I’ve had many conversations with parents, letting them vent about all the things they were unhappy with about their old providers. But often, they never felt comfortable telling those concerns to their provider—and that always made me a little sad. Parents should ALWAYS feel comfortable bringing concerns to their provider. Sometimes when that doesn’t happen, it’s a case of the parent or provider being hard to talk to. But in my experience, it was just often a case of people who weren’t compatible communicators. That’s why when I’m asked, I tell people that the answers to the lists of those questions are secondary. Sure, it’s important to find out sick policies and how they feel about picky eaters or tough nappers. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you’re able to comfortably talk with your provider about those things. Easy, open communication will make you feel a million times better about leaving your little one, which in turn will make your little one have an exponentially better experience in their care. So, go in to your interviews with some flexibility in your lists. And keep an ear open for what your gut is telling you. A trip to the museum is an entertaining, educational and budget-friendly way to spend an afternoon together with your family. Luckily, the Sacramento and Placer County regions are home to several delightful, family-friendly museums. Check out this year’s round-up of local, must-see museums, each offering a unique twist on learning:
Aerospace Museum of California This museum touts over 50 historic planes including military and commercial aircrafts—many of which visitors can climb inside— plus, a flight simulator and a large collection of engines. It’s worth the visit to the McClellan Business Park. Be sure to check their calendar for story times, STEM events and tours.

A local favorite, this museum houses a permanent collection of some of the most impressive, beautifully restored steam locomotives to ever ride the California railways. Cook Once, Eat All Week...
HOW TO MEAL PLAN LIKE A PRO!
By Carrie Madormo, RN, MPH I love being home with my kids. The impromptu trips to the Zoo or spending the morning in our pajamas playing Candyland make every day worth it. The parts I don’t love would be everything else. Trying to find the time to work from home, keep a somewhat clean house and feed the family quickly overwhelms me and often leaves me feeling drained. When our days race by, it is far too easy to drive home after a long day and order a pizza or go through the drive-thru. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything I want to accomplish, so I have two choices. I could keep trying to do it all and burn myself out or I could change my strategy. One of the most influential changes I have made for our family is batch cooking. Spending a few hours in the kitchen Sunday afternoon ends up saving hours and hours throughout the week. Not to mention the improved quality of life. Finding an extra few hours in the weekend may sound impossible, but you will get those hours back and more throughout the week. Imagine starting Monday morning knowing that your fridge is stocked with healthy, home-cooked meals and snacks for the entire week! It is actually easier than it sounds. First, make the decision that this new meal planning process is going to be fun. It sounds silly, but our intentions make a difference. You could tell yourself that you’re wasting your Sunday afternoon stuck in the kitchen or that you are going to spend time with your family while teaching them about sustainable healthy eating. Set aside a few minutes to sit down with your favorite cookbook or food blog. Pinterest is a great place to look for ideas. Pick a few meals and plan to make double batches for plenty of leftovers. This is a great time to get the kids involved. Ask them to page through your cookbooks or think of some of their favorite meals. My four-year-old loves scrolling through Pinterest with me to pick out tasty treats. The more invested they feel in the process, the more fun they’ll have with it. They’ll also be a lot more likely to actually eat those meals come dinnertime! Once you have a plan, head to the grocery store with your list in hand. As vital as I believe it is to involve your kids with this meal planning process, I highly recommend heading to the store alone if you have small kids. This should be fun for you as well!

When you return home from the store, try to start cooking right away. This way you do not have to put all the food away, only to take it back out to cook an hour later.
Ask your family to help you unpack the food and make it fun. Put some music on and pour yourself a cup of tea (or wine). As you set out the food, this is a great time to ask your kids about school and what they have to do this week. It’s amazing how much your sweet children will spill about their lives when they’re engaged with something else, like cooking. To get started, take out all your fruits and vegetables. Wash and chop bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce. Washing the produce is a perfect job for little hands. Then peel and chop your onions and mince the garlic. Ask your older kids if they’d like to help with that step. Having plenty of chopped veggies will keep the week easy, as they can then be used for fresh salads, soups, pasta dishes or omelets. If you prefer cooked vegetables, toss them with olive oil, salt, and pepper, then roast in the oven. To make your own salad dressing, ask your kids to pour some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, a few spices and a little salt in a mason jar and shake it up. This homemade dressing will keep for about a week in the fridge. Then make a big batch of grains for the week. You could start with brown rice or quinoa. This will keep all week and is a perfect base for roasted vegetables, grilled meat or a hearty soup. You could also use this time to make soup for the week. Use some of your chopped produce to make homemade vegetable soup and throw in some noodles in fun shapes for the kids. Finally, making snacks ahead of time is incredibly convenient, especially when everyone is starving after school. Mix up your own trail mix with your favorite nuts, dried fruits, granola and maybe a few chocolate chips. Ask your kids to portion out the prepared snacks in plastic bags or Tupperware containers to throw in school lunches all week. Then gather some mason jars and whip up your favorite smoothie recipe. Pour into the jars and keep in the freezer all week. Each week try experimenting with different vegetables, grains and snacks. The other night I accepted an
invitation for a spontaneous momsnight-out (MNO), a few moms were going to a movie at the Studio Movie Grill in Rocklin. At first, I debated whether to go. It was Friday evening and they were leaving in two hours, my husband was not home yet and it seemed like a big effort to get out of my comfortable clothes and put on something a little less pajama-like. Still, it sounded like fun.
Like many moms, I don’t go out often, I am always the one to put the kids to bed and I rarely take a break, so I decided to take a chance and go. I arranged it all with my husband and another dad whose wife was coming—then I spent way too much time deciding what to wear, and off I went. To my surprise, it was much more fun than I thought it would be. We laughed and joked, sometimes at ourselves, sometimes at each other. Studio Movie Grill had great food at reasonable prices and drinks too. The movie we saw was funny and set just the right tone for our night out. It was not a super late night or a crazy night, but that was okay. We enjoyed getting out and taking a break from the constant calls of “Mom!” It dawned on me, how much I needed this break. I realized that all of us need this time to get away. Not only is it beneficial to moms, but to our children, too. If they’re always with mom, it can be good for them to be around other people, be it a babysitter or their dad. They also get to see that their mom has a life beyond her children and that is important, too. It is not and cannot be about them 100% of the time. It is not healthy for anyone. Getting away—even for a short time—will have you coming home feeling refreshed with a new appreciation for your kiddos (ideally). You are more interested in what they are doing or what they want to talk with you about, when you’ve had a little break. You also might feel a little more patient, when the constant calls of “Mom!” resume when you get back. And although I was a little slow and more tired at their Saturday soccer games the next day—it was well worth it. So, call a couple of friends and do a MNO. Whether, you’re shopping, meeting up for dinner, or heading out to a movie—you’ll be glad you did! SB

EDITED BY SHANNON SMITH Foster a love of nature and explore the great outdoors with your littles all year-long on these family-friendly hiking trails located right in our very own “backyard.” A family that hikes together, stays together. American River Conservancy, Themes & Locations Vary Born to Roam is a family program that takes place on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10am to 12pm. Volunteer Naturalists lead families on exploration hikes in the foothills once a month. The theme and locations vary and all ages are welcome. www.ARConservancy.org Cosumnes River Preserve Nature Trails , Galt Lost Slough Wetlands Walk is a one-mile universally-accessible trail offering an upclose view of lush marshes, wetland plants, water-birds, insects, and amphibians. Effie Yeaw Nature Trails, Carmichael Located inside Ancil Hoffman County Park, the nature study trails are open from dawn to dusk. There is a $5 per car parking fee to enter the park, but once inside there are three self-guided trails. Family-friendly Nature Walks and presentations for all ages are available almost every weekend. Some of the trails are not accessible by stroller and dogs are not allowed, but they each provide a unique experience of the varied habitats. Gibson Ranch Trail, Elverta Check out the pristine countryside, and get some great exercise while you’re at it, with a hike or bike ride through the many trails in the park. The Park Loop trail makes a scenic 3-mile trek around the entire perimeter of Gibson Ranch Park. If you like the sound of gently rushing water, hike along the 2-mile Dry Creek trail. Make sure you brake for horses, though. www.GibsonRanchPark.com Hidden Falls, Auburn A family favorite of ours, although it’s a destination that you’ll want to get an early start to, as it can get busy. 6 Independence Trail, Nevada City There are many amazing trails in and around Nevada City, but I chose this one because it was the first wheelchair accessible wilderness trail in the country. The trail utilizes the old Excelsior Ditch, built around 1859 to carry water for hydraulic mining. With an easy, level grade, this is a good walking trail for families and folks with limited mobility. www.NevadaCityChamber.com/point/independence-trail
7 Miner’s & False Ravine Trails, Roseville
Catch the trail at Sculpture Park (behind The Home Depot on N. Sunrise) and explore some of Roseville’s most beautiful open space and wetland areas. Follow the Miner’s Ravine Trail all the way to Sierra College Boulevard, or take the False Ravine Trail and make a stop at Piches Park to enjoy a picnic or a game of basketball. 8 Quarry Park, Rocklin
Quarry Park is a central gathering place and picturesque setting for community events, concerts, quiet walks through nature, and active play. Quarry Park is home to an amphitheater, trails, open space, and wildlife. www.Rocklin.ca.us/quarry-park
9 Quarry Trail, Auburn
This wide, level trail can be used for a half-day walk and a pleasant picnic along the Middle Fork (MF) American River. It goes through some of the best scenery available in the American River Canyons, and picnic tables are provided along the first 1¼ miles of the trail. For those looking for a good workout, this trail is 11.2 miles roundtrip. Parking is limited and there is little shade, so take plenty of water and sunscreen on hot days. www.Parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1345
10 River Discovery Trail, Gold River
A fully accessible, 1/4-mile trail that follows the edge of the American River and provides opportunities to watch the seasonal spawning of salmon and steelhead. Look for migrating and resident birds. Deer, river otter and coyote also call this area home. Most of the remaining spawning beds are located within the 8 river miles below this area. Water conservation and your responsible use of the river protect salmon, steelhead and a wide array of river wildlife. 11 The Oaks Nature Trail, Folsom
A 3/4 -mile, natural trail that is accessible for the disabled and is considered easy for all fitness levels. The trail is located just past the turn off to the day use area in Folsom Lake SRA. There are handrails throughout most of the trail. Horseback riding and bicycling are not allowed on this trail. 12 UC Davis Arboretum, Davis
There are a variety of garden walks available. Arboretum paths are popular with walkers, joggers, and bicyclists. The main path is a 3.5-mile loop. The lawns at the west end near Peter J. Shields Grove are perfect for informal games and picnics.
