Ideas for Creating a Sensory Friendly Backyard By Shannon Smith
Each year as summer break kicks off it’s fun to watch the kids rediscover the backyard. But as the temperatures begin to creep up the novelty can wear off, and before you know it the kids have made their way back indoors to watch TV and play video games. With a little thought and planning you can transform your backyard space into a place where the outdoor activities are limitless and children of all abilities can gather and play all summer long! We scoured the Internet and Pinterest for easy ideas to make your backyard the perfect summer hangout. While you can find loads of our favorites on Pinterest, www. Pinterest.com/sacparent/go-out-and-play/— here are some easy, DIY ways to transform your backyard into a sanctuary for your child with special needs. Swings. There are many to choose from including, cocoon swings, safety harness swings and wheelchair platform swings. Vestibular stimulation can help those with sensory processing disorders and other special needs. The gentle back-and-forth motion helps calm overstimulated children, improves balance, and develops important motor skills. Chalk. Take coloring outside with chalk! Grab a jumbo size chalk options to help your child easily get a good grip and to keep it from easily breaking. She can also paint with colored shaving cream. Have her dress for mess! Picnics. Get your child involved in helping you pack up a lunch and head out back for a picnic! Spread a blanket out in the backyard and enjoy the sunshine and conversation. 10 JUNE 2019 sacramentoparent.com
What a fun way to change up the regular routine and get some fresh air. Quiet Time. Why does quiet time have to be inside? You can create a special quiet space outside in the shade. Just grab a blanket and pillows, set up a hammock, your camping tent or whatever else seems comfy and relaxing. Choose a few books, color or pick just about any quiet-time activity that your child would normally enjoy inside. Ball Pit. Ball pits are great at creating a sensory experience for those with autism. A budget-friendly option is to simply fill an inflatable pool with the plastic balls to get the same effect. Scavenger Hunt. Have your child walk around the yard and be on the lookout for things that can be found in
nature, things that are green, a heart-shaped leaf, etc. You can make a checklist in advance or just have fun exploring the backyard in a new way!
DIY Sensory Bins
Bird Seed Sensory Bin. A bird seed sensory bin can be a fun way to get your child’s hands on nature. Your child will love feeling the textures of the seeds. Add buckets, cups, shovels and utensils to make the fun last longer. You can also use the seeds to let them plant and garden with little flower pots and flowers. Bubble Bath Toy Car Wash. Fill a bin with water and soap and throw in some toy cars. If your child is young, watch them closely to ensure that they do not get soap in his eyes or mouth. Your child will love washing the cars and you won’t have to worry about the water splashing since you’re
outside. He can also give their plastic animals a bath, too. Pool Noodle Boats Water Sensory Bin. Let your child help create the pool noodle boats. We set this up as an activity at EDfair and it was a hit with the kids! It is super simple and can be a great option for sensory play. C A M P By Sarah Lyons Many parents want their kids to experience summer camps but the idea of spending several nights away from home is a little scary for both the parent and child. A great alternative, especially for younger kids, is to send them to day camp. Day camp, as the name implies, typically consist of a series of consecutive days where they child is away during the daytime hours. Children leave in the morning to have the camp experience and come home in the afternoon or evening to have dinner with their families and sleep in their own beds. Day camp gives kids many of the same learning experiences as a typical sleepover camp.
Builds Independence Camp is a great place for kids to explore their own independence and day camp is no different. Kids are dropped off at camp in the morning where they are challenged with new activities that they may not get the opportunity to try at home. They will make friends, eat lunch, and follow directions without the help of their parents. Kids start to feel more self confident and independent as the week goes on.

Make New Friends While you may sign your child up for a camp with a friend, they will meet many new people their age. The opportunity to make friends with children that share similar interests and a fun new experience helps kids feel more comfortable when they are in new situations.
Take a Break From the Screen When children spend time at day camp, they get a much needed break from screen time. As video games, apps, TV, and tablets take more and more of our free time, getting the kids outside to play or having fun while learning new skills is a priceless benefit to parents. Who knows? When the kids come home from camp, they may realize they don’t need as much screen time as they thought they did.
Learn New Skills Day camps typically offer opportunities to learn and grow in areas that children may not be exposed to at school. Kids can pick camps that tailor to their interest including a variety of sports, music, dance, theater, science, art, exploring nature, and more. If your child is drawn to a particular
Lifelong Skills Day camp helps kids learn skills they can use for a lifetime including problem solving and leadership skills, improved confidence, and an openness to new things. Depending on the camp, they may learn other skills that will stick with them. My kids learned how to start a fire and cook their own meals at local scouting camps. My daughter gained the confidence to get on stage in front of a room full of parents and peers at theater camp. My kids improved their skills at sport camps and they faced their fears while trying the camp obstacle course. These experiences will stay with your child throughout their life as they are faced with challenges and successes in the future. As you are deciding if day camp is right for your family, consider what type of camp your child would be most interested in. Camps are filling fast, but there are still many local camps to choose from and take a look at all the options right inside this issue! Choose something that you know they will be successful at and consider inviting a friend to sign up with your child. This can make them more comfortable that first day. Let your child help you choose the right camp and then let them know you think they will do great. Sarah Lyons is a mom of six kids, including four-year-old triplets. WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE CAMPGROUND Whether you’re an RV owner, camping guru or just want to try it out for the first time to give your family the experience, you can’t go wrong with this KOA. They have options for every type of camper from tent and RV sites, to airstream trailers that are already set up and deluxe cabins that are stocked with everything you’ll need.
As a child, camping was the BIG summer vacation for my family. We simply didn’t have a grand vacation fund that allowed for expensive resorts or air travel. But boy did I look forward to that summer camping trip, it was the best! Being that June is National Camping Month, I wanted to take a minute to remind you of how great a good old-fashioned campout can be for the mind, body and soul. Sure, Maui and Disneyland are fabulous destinations—but, when I was a kid, heading out of town for a week or two by driving off to sleep under the stars and making s’mores around a campfire—was pretty exciting! I always knew we’d have an adventurous summer break traveling around to nearby campsites that felt just far enough away from home. I never felt like I missed a thing and it helped that my parents always let my brother and I invite a friend to join us, too. (Another perk of being a cost-effective way to vacation!) As a parent, I want my kids to have those same fond memories of camping. Which is why—still as an adult—summer break just doesn’t feel complete without planning a camping trip. Maybe you’re not a huge camping family, that’s okay. You don’t have to totally rough it in a tent on the hard ground with no hot water or electricity. Nor do you have to have the biggest and best RV with all the bells and whistles. There are ways camping is made easy for families and one of those ways is to head to a KOA. We have many favorite spots that we love to camp, but I wanted to share with you the Santa Cruz/Monterey KOA in this column because, well...heading to the beach in the summer is a fabulous idea. Plus, it’s so family-friendly, there’s a ton to do and I know many Sacramento area families that go there and love it (including mine). I should also mention that I moved to the Sacramento area from Santa Cruz, so I know first-hand how much there is for families to do in the area. So give it a whirl, plan a weekend getaway or more and go camping! Here are some tips and ideas to make it an amazing vacation without breaking the bank!
The location itself is a dream for kids. It’s about a three-hour drive from the Sacramento area. Once you arrive you’ll be pleased to find that they have just about everything there: a heated pool and jacuzzi, a store, an arcade, planned activities and crafts, a coconut palm tree structure that you can climb, multiple playgrounds, expansive lawns, bocce ball, cornhole, outdoor movies, large campfire pits that you can gather around, and a giant bounce pillow (which my kids LOVE)! Other things you can do at the campground are: take a ride on the KOA Express Fun Train, rent bikes, enjoy the KOA pancake breakfast every Saturday morning, cool down with a tasty treat from the ice cream bike that rolls around the campground, play in the human hamster ball or make your own tie-dye shirt. (See what I mean about the kids being totally content at the campground?) Another reason I like this location is because it is also great for getting away with multiple families. I absolutely recommend getting out to explore Santa Cruz, Capitola and Monterey…but, there’s so much for the kids to do on the KOA grounds that they won’t even be asking to leave. That equals true relaxation for parents. More families—more fun! The Santa Cruz/Monterey KOA happens to be nestled in between Santa Cruz and Monterey in Watsonville about a mile from Manresa State Beach. This makes it super convenient to spend time in Monterey, Capitola and Santa Cruz all in one trip! When you’re ready to head out to explore the area, here are a few of my favorite activities you can add to your itinerary.

You’ll each leave with a cool bumper sticker, too! (I recommend buying tickets ahead of time to avoid long waits, the tour takes about 45-minutes.)

So you’re throwing a party for your child and their friends…The invitations have been sent, the food’s been prepared, and on the big day, the guests all arrive. Now what?!? The answer—Games! What better way to get guests involved and keep them entertained? The trick is picking the right game for the people at your party. Here is a little “Game Guidance” when it comes to picking party games that will be a success.
Assess the Guests—How old are most of the guests? This will often determine their attention span and ability to take turns and/or follow directions. You may choose a great game, but if the directions are too complicated or if guests become bored or distracted and lose interest in the game, you may quickly be headed toward party problems. It’s also good to consider the “energy level” of the guests and if they are used to doing activities together or if they may be strangers to one another which may affect how the group will interact together while playing games. Space/Time Continuum—When planning games for your group, take into consideration the amount of space you will have to work with as well as how long you want your games to last. If you are catering to an active younger bunch, you may want to choose a party space that allows for multiple shorter games with plenty of movement, while older or less active party goers might find it more enjoyable to play games that are more mentally challenging but lack physicality, thus needing less space, but more time for successful game play. To Compete or Not to Compete, That is the Question— Games, by nature, are intended to create a challenge. You, as the party host, have the opportunity to choose the type of games most likely to be entertaining and enjoyable for your guests while minimizing temper-tantrums and hurt feelings that quickly dampen the festivities. One of the easiest ways to do this is not to give prizes for individual game winners, but rather to encourage each game player to do their best and when the game is over, everyone celebrates the groups success together. Another option, if you have plenty of help, especially good for younger party-goers is to have game stations guests rotate through so
only one child is playing each game at a time which keeps things from becoming too competitive. Stick to the Theme—Having a themed party will not only make the celebration memorable, it can be your guide to making old games seem new again. Pin-the-Tail-on-the-Donkey is a kid’s party classic that can be updated to fit nearly any party theme. Star Wars party theme: Pin the ship on the Death Star. Sofia the First theme: Pin the crown on the princess. Hunting for themed objects is a great way to get all of your guests involved at once— whether you search for Cinderella’s lost slipper, dinosaur eggs, or even a treasure chest of pirate’s booty, this is a game everyone can play and (just like hunting for Easter Eggs) it can be easily modified to meet the searching skills of various guests. Other old standby games include relay races carrying themed objects or themed costumes being put on and taken off, coming up with new words from a word or phrase related to your theme, memory games where guests look at a tray of themed objects and then have to figure out what item has been removed while they aren’t looking, or have guests try to guess how many of an item related to the theme are inside a clear container. You could even create a themed word search using a computer app. Assessing your guests’ needs and abilities, taking your party time and space into consideration, limiting competition while keeping everyone involve and getting creative to come up with games that reflect your parties theme will all add to the overall success of your party. If you have a teenager, this question might be harder to answer. The teenager of today has tremendous pressures to fit in. Psychologists agree, teens often feel high levels of stress over peer pressure, pressure to succeed academically, and pressure to keep up on social media. These pressures have serious consequences if not managed properly. As we approach graduation parties and summer social gatherings, we want parents to consider the risks of using drugs or alcohol. Besides alcohol and marijuana, some teens are raiding medicine cabinets to try whatever they find, which can be a scary and dangerous combination. As a parent, here are some things you can do to help your teen be safe when they are heading to a party or social gathering.
Give your teen an “out” Make a plan with your teen to give them an innocuous way to get them out of a situation where they feel uncomfortable. This could be a quick code word they would text you which would result in you calling or texting them that there is an emergency and they need to come right now. This way your teen would be able to get out of the situation without rousing suspicion amongst their friends.
Lock up your illicit items If you have prescription medications at home, lock them up. If your teen is having a party at your house be sure to not only lock up your pills, but secure your access to any alcohol, marijuana, or other controlled substances. Not only do you want your child and his/ her friends to be safe, there are also legal aspects to consider.
Social Host Liability Ordinance In Placer County, there is a Social Host Ordinance in place for Auburn, Lincoln, Rocklin, Roseville, Truckee, and Unincorporated Placer County. This ordinance describes the liability of the host of a party pertaining to a minor’s use of alcohol, marijuana, or controlled substances at gatherings. Not only could you be held legally liable for injuries sustained at a party at your home, you could face a fine and be charged with a misdemeanor. The best defense is to plan today to arm your teens with the tools they need to make responsible choices and avoid peer pressure.

Glamping - A Glamorous Way to Host a Camping Themed Sleepover By Pam Molnar
If your child is worried about participating in an overnight camp this summer, Glamping helps to reduce their fears. It allows them to enjoy the great outdoors while they are surrounded by the comforts of home. Glampers can even set up their camp indoors for nights when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. Here’s a quick guide to the ultimate Glamping Sleepover Party. How to decorate: Dress up your tent with a soft floor of thick blankets and colorful pillows. Inexpensive inflatable pool floats make a nice bed, especially when covered in soft quilts. Camouflage the canvas tent walls with fabric draped from the ceiling and tied back against the wall. For a shabby-chic look, purchase old fabric or sheets from a thrift store. Dangle white holiday lights from the ceiling and around the door frame to give the room a soft glow. Set up a low table under the stars with pillows for chairs. This will serve as your crafting and dining table. Start with decorating it for your meal with mismatched china, flatware and a beautiful table cloth. These are great thrift store finds or you can rent them from your local party supply stores. When it’s time to move on to the crafts, switch to plastic, disposable table coverings.

Crafts: 1. Bohemian Lantern–Paint the outside of mason jars with a 1:6 mixture of paint to water. It will give the glass a thin, muted layer of color. When dry, decorate with puff paint, glitter or rhinestones. Add a battery-operated tea light or string of lights and seal with a decorated lid. 2. Shabby Chic Blankets–Use two twin sized sheets from the thrift store. Prewash and then lay them on top of each other, matching the edge. Cut about 4” from edge of fabric in 2” wide strips all the way around. Tie together to form a two-sided blanket. 3. Dream Catchers–Kits are available online on Amazon or Oriental Trading with everything you need to make a dreamcatcher. While kits include beads and feathers, you might want to offer other decoration options like ribbons, strips of fabric or dried flowers. Other Activities: 1. Conversation starters–Prewrite conversation starter questions on smooth rocks and add them to a fancy jar or vase. Have the guests take turns pulling them out and reading the question out loud. 2. Yardzee–Make your own lawn dice by decorating same sized square boxes. To keep up with your Boho theme, you can decorate the dice in vintage wrapping paper and add the dots with solid colored paper. Make each girl a score sheet from an online printable or keep everyone’s score on poster boards nearby. 3. Scavenger Hunt–Check online for an outdoor scavenger hunt list or make your own. When the sun goes down, you can also do a glowstick hunt around the yard. Assign each guest or team a color for an added challenge.

Menu: 1. For an easy appetizer or movie snack, make campfire nachos. Fill individual foil packets with nacho chips, cheese, tomatoes, corn, beans, meat and avocados. Seal foil and cook 4-5” from fire for 10 minutes or until cheese melts.

2. For your main meal, warm up mugs of tomato soup and make grilled cheese paninis. Offer the guests cheese options and add ons like bacon, avocado, tomatoes and spinach. 3. Chocolate fondue is alternative to birthday cake. Use strawberries, bananas, pound cake, angel food cake or marshmallows for dippers. 4. For breakfast the next morning, let the kids make their own cinnamon rolls on a stick. Use kabob sticks (presoaked in water) to secure the rolls and let cook slowly (about 15 minutes) over a low heat. Drizzle with icing and serve with a fruit cup. Screen a camping movie: Choose a great kid friendly camp movie to end the night. If you are screening the movie outside of the Glampground, try filling an inflatable pool with blankets and pillows for a cozy viewing set up. Camp movie ideas might include: “Parent Trap”, “Camp Rock”, “Cheaper by the Dozen 2” or “The Great Outdoors”. Goody bags: An easy glamping goody bag is filled with all the fixing for s’mores–chocolate bar, Teddy Grahams and marshmallows. Add a simple note that says, “Life is s’more fun with friends like you”. You can also fill a dollar store cinch bag with travel sized items like toothbrush, hand sanitizer, makeup removers and lip balm. Pam Molnar is an avid party planner and mother of three. Unforgettable Summer Day Trips to Educate and Engage the Whole Family By Vida Mercer Looking to fill your summer with more meaningful family experiences than the mall or water park? You're in luck! The Sacramento area offers so many options for excursions that inspire, educate, and entertain all age groups. Make one of these your next family adventure! Sierra College Natural History Museum - Rocklin You'll know you're getting close when you spy the life-sized outlines of prehistoric animals on the sidewalk outside. You can marvel at the enormous Pterodactyl model soaring overhead, watch for an earthquake as the working seismometer monitors tremors in the earth real-time, and touch the shin bone of an Apatosaurus--one of their many "handson" exhibits. Harris Center & El Dorado Musical Theater - Folsom Add a little drama to your summer with a theatrical performance. The Harris Center in Folsom is home to the El Dorado Musical Theater, which prides itself on not doing children's theater but, instead, providing top-notch performances that happen to include young people. And who knows; it may inspire a rising star in your family! Nimbus Fish Hatchery - Gold River At the hatchery, you can get a look at how millions of salmon and trout eggs are collected, hatched, raised and released each year. Discover what a "fish ladder" is for, help feed the young fish, and take a self-guided tour. This is an excellent location to get kids interested in ecology and human's impact on the environment. There are exhibits for all ages and naturalists on-hand to answer questions. Effie Yeaw Nature Center - Carmichael This 100-acre nature preserve along the American River is wilderness close
at hand. The preserve hosts a butterfly garden, a "natural playscape" (think playground of the olden days), and a replica of a Maidu village. You can pay a visit to the almost 40 non-releasable animals that call the center home, hike the trails, or coordinate your visit with one of their weekend programs or special events. Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park - Coloma Driving a short distance into the foothills takes you back to 1848 to experience the events that shaped U.S. history and sparked the Gold Rush. Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park marks the site that John Marshall first discovered the gold flecks that led to a flood of pioneers coming west. Explore the replica sawmill where the discovery happened, as well as over 20 historic buildings, and mining exhibits. Then, roll up your sleeves and take a gold panning lesson yourself. Soil Born Farms - Rancho Cordova Soil Born Farms is a 55-acre organic, urban agricultural and educational project where you can visit for a day or be involved for a season. They regularly offer tours and events that showcase gardening and cooking classes, kids’ garden and art activities, agricultural demonstrations, and even live music. Learn about beekeeping, water conservation, herbs, farm animals, native plants, and more. They have their own tea and snack bar for sampling while you're there, and organic plants and produce you can take home. Yoga in the Park - Midtown Sacramento This one is not a full day-trip, but the perfect way wind down from one. Introduce the whole family to a healthy, active hobby with Yoga in the Park. Throughout the summer, Midtown Association and Yoga Moves Us team up to offer free
yoga for all experience levels from 6-7pm at Fremont Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Sutter's Fort on the first Friday of the month. Enchambered - Sacramento If yoga sounds too sedate, maybe your family would rather try some pulse-raising, problem-solving fun? Enchambered: Sacramento Escape Room offers you a variety of immersive experiences to choose from, "locks" you in for 60 intense minutes, and challenges you to decipher clues and solve puzzles to escape before your time is up. Collaboration is the key and the puzzles are challenging, so this is a great way to exercise your critical thinking and teamwork skills. Folsom Zoo and Sanctuary - Folsom Folsom Zoo and Sanctuary is one of my family's favorite day-trips and is a relaxing alternative to the larger, big city zoos. You can pack a picnic lunch to enjoy Lions Park next door, and then visit the almost 100 animals that call the zoo home, including delightful peacocks that roam freely on the grounds. To raise the educational value, plan a quick scavenger hunt before you go. Jump online to view their animals and create a list of things to find depending on your child's age level. Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Willows Drive a little further from the city and the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge will offer you more educational activities and exploration opportunities than a single visit can hold. Take a guided tour of the exhibits in their visitor's center. Borrow binoculars and a field guide and see what critters you can spy on the multitude of trails. Climb to the top of their observation tower. Use their GPS to discover the two on-site geocaches. They offer a variety of educational programs and events year-round.

Before you start preparing that traditional breakfast in bed for dad on Father's Day, consider some of these outings first. If dad is itching for an adventure, why not try one or even a few of these family activities? And don't forget to snap photos of everyone enjoying dad's special day because this is going to be his best Father's Day yet! HIGH SCORE DAD Whether dad likes vintage video games like Pac Man and Space Invaders or prefers a few rounds of Skee Ball and pinball, a trip to the arcade is a sure-fire way to light up the day. SOARING DAD Remember the song, "Let's Go Fly A Kite" from the Disney film Mary Poppins? Stop at the store on your way to the best kite-flying park in town and you've got a great impromptu Dad's day excursion.
ANGLER DAD If dad loves fishing, don't try to worm your way out of it. Dig him up some worms on Saturday or buy some at your local pet store. Then haul out or borrow the gear, and off to the nearest body of water you all go! TOMAHAWKING DAD Some dads love nothing more than a nice long game of Frisbee. So surprise him with a new disc to add to his collection and then head to the nearest Frisbee golf course. Check out the disc golf courses in Rocklin and Folsom. HISTORY BUFF DAD Is a historic destination or re-enactment event within driving distance? If so, pile everyone in the car and travel back in time together. Sutter’s Fort and Old Sacramento are a few places to check out.
SLIP AND SLIDE DAD If you are fortunate enough to live near a water park, you've got a whole day of splashing-good fun ahead of you. Arrive early to beat the long lines. There’s several options around town from Aquatic Centers to Sunsplash or Raging Waters! BATTER UP DAD Take dad out to the ball game, take him out with the crowd. Buy him some peanuts and Cracker Jacks, and he will smile all day while he cheers for the home team! We are so lucky to have the beautiful Raley Field close by. RIVER RAT DAD Some dads are just water-lovers. If your dad is one of them, he'll probably love of a day of kayaking, rafting or tubing along the American River. Be sure to wear a helmet when necessary. LIP-SMACKING DAD Barbeques are great, but today is dad's special day and he'd probably like to be waited on rather than cook. So what's it going to be: steak, BBQ, pasta? Go ahead and indulge dad with a fancy dinner on his special day.
3-D DAD Surprise dad with the 3D or Imax movie he's most excited to see this summer. Or better yet, head for the nearest drive-in movie theater. Check out the retro West Wind Drive-In right here, in Sacramento! RAPPELLING DAD Does dad love an intense challenge? If so, rock climbing at your local climbing center is a great idea. Be sure to make reservations in advance. Quarry Park Adventures would be a good option. BISCUITS & GRAVY DAD Let's face it, one of the best places to go on Father's Day is out to brunch. BREAKING AWAY DAD You don't have to own enough bikes for everyone in the whole family. You can always rent bikes for the day or borrow bikes from your neighbors for a whole family ride. Stay hydrated and bring snacks. PUTTING DAD For some dads, there is no greater joy than sharing a love of golf. If kids are young, mini-golf is a great option. When they get older, try the driving range, and eventually, the whole eighteen holes. PAINT-SPLATTERED DAD For dads with tweens and teens, an afternoon at the paintball park can be thrilling, not to mention colorful. Just remember to wear safety gear. We have several nearby. SUNSCREEN DAD Even if dad doesn't surf or even Boogie board, he may still long for a relaxing day at the beach. If visiting
the coast is a little too far of a drive for the day, how about a lake or riverfront. Dads and water do mix and there are plenty of options throughout Greater Sacramento. EDUCATION-JUNKIE DAD Have you noticed the proliferation of local classes in your community? Why not sign the whole family up for a class you can take together? Search for "family learning" + your location and see what sounds intriguing. COWBOY DAD If your dad loves the movie “City Slickers”, maybe it's time for that family trail ride. Wear jeans and sturdy shoes and get ready to sweet talk your ride. BOUNCING DAD Even though he might not be prepared to do flips, dad might be up for an afternoon at the local trampoline park. Jumping is fun and relaxing. Call ahead to discover the least-crowded times at places like Rockin’ Jump, Sky Zone and The Bounce Spot. BULL'S EYE DAD Find an archery store in your area and head on over for a few pointers before purchasing a bow and arrow set to use in your yard. We’re also fortunate to have quite a few archery ranges close by.
PUDDLE OF DAD Do you have a day spa or a local massage center near home? If so, sign dad up for some treatments. If the place is family-friendly, everyone can join in. Otherwise, grab a bite while dad gets spoiled. TOP DOWN DAD How convenient, vintage car shows often fall on Father's Day. If dad is a car buff, plan a day trip to a show in your region. Wash dad's car before you go. HELPING HANDS DAD If dad loves to volunteer, why not pitch in as a family on Father's Day? Charities often need more support during the non-holiday months. Contact your favorite for ways your family can contribute. ROADRUNNER DAD Lace up those sneakers and get ready to pound some pavement with dad. Families who run together can work their way up from short races to long over the years. DOWN TO EARTH DAD If dad has a green thumb, why not take a garden tour for Father's Day? Or take dad to the biggest nursery in your area to select plants for the season.
TIRE-SCREECHING DAD Even though kids may not be old enough to drive, they can have fun racing dad at the nearest Go Kart destination. With options like K1 Speed or All American Speedway you can search for both indoor and outdoor options and then rev 'em up! EVERYBODY NOW DAD Outdoor concert opportunities abound in the summertime! Grab tickets ahead of time to attend a traditional concert. Be sure to choose a singer or group that will get dad grooving. We’ve got a round-up of free concerts in the park on page 34.
STRIKE-LOVING DAD Of course, dad doesn't need to use the bumpers, but younger kids can. This means even young children can enjoy an afternoon or evening of bowling with dad. ROUND AND ROUND DAD For many dads the amusement park is a family favorite. How many times can you go on each ride before the park closes? You'll have fun finding out. The El Dorado County Fair (6/13-16) and Placer County Fair (6/20-23) are happening this month! BROWSING DAD If dad is the thoughtful type, his idea of the perfect adventure might be a literary roam through the stacks of your largest local bookstore. Give him a gift card and let him browse, while everyone else hangs out in their favorite section.
STOMPING DAD Looking for a last-minute adventure for Father's Day that won't break the bank? Hiking is perfect. You can either do a short afternoon hike or take more time preparing for an all-day excursion. Whichever dad prefers.
UP, UP AND AWAY DAD If you are looking for an unforgettable Father's Day experience, consider taking the family up in a hot air balloon. Of course, this adventure is weather-sensitive, so be schedule-flexible for the safest experience.
