TALKING ABOUT BULLYING
By Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer Roseville Police Department
When does teasing become bullying? Some would say teasing is a natural part of growing up. As we know, teasing or bullying can have a significant impact on the life of a child. When teasing becomes repetitive or when there’s a conscious intent to hurt another child, then it should be considered bullying. It can be verbal bullying (making threats, name-calling), psychological bullying (excluding children, spreading rumors), or physical bullying (hitting, pushing, taking a child’s possessions). Bullying can have significantly negative outcomes for both the bully and the victim. When adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior they send the message that it is not acceptable. Research shows that this can stop bullying behavior over time. Research also shows that teachers and parents don’t typically witness bullying and so they are not aware of most bullying behavior.
What can you do about bullying? For younger kids, the best way to solve a bullying problem is teach them to tell a trusted adult. For teens though, the tell-an-adult approach depends on the bullying situation. One situation in which it is vital to report bullying is if it has the potential to lead to physical danger and harm. When teens stay silent, it can give the bully free rein to become more and more violent. If you suspect your child is being bullied, report it to school administration. If the bullying behavior has risen to the level of physical assaults, consider also reporting the incident(s) to your local law enforcement agency. We know it’s not possible for every parent or teacher to view all bullying behavior. Here are a few tips from the website KidsHealth.org you can use to coach your child through a tough situation:
Ignore the bully and walk away. This shows that you just don’t care.
Hold the anger and use humor. Don’t give a bully control of your emotions.
Don’t get physical. Showing anger through being physical invites the bully to retaliate.
Practice confidence. Rehearse what you are going to say when confronted by a bully, and practice not reacting, even if you have to fake it.
Take charge of your life, stay true to yourself. Encourage your child to focus on actions that make them feel their best and strongest.
Talk about it with trusted adults. School Youth Services Officers, counselors, teachers, or friends are great resources to talk about fears and frustrations.
What if your child is bullying others? There are a multitude of reasons why a child might be acting out through bullying. It’s important to keep in mind that kids don’t bully because they are “bad kids.” Kids are still figuring themselves out and can make mistakes. Also, a child may not fully grasp how their behavior is making the victim feel. This is particularly true of younger kids. Talk with your child and try to understand their point of view, and guide them through appropriate friendship behaviors. This can curb bullying and address the issues that might have caused it to happen in the first place.
What kids can do when they see bullying? Kids may not know what to do when they see peers being bullied. In addition to informing a teacher, parent, or trusted adult, children can also do their part to help. Encourage them to be kind to others; and if they see someone being left out, include them in activities or sit next to them at lunch. Just hanging out together will let them know they aren’t alone. Bullying occurs at all ages and amongst boys and girls. As a result, children will no doubt experience some type of bullying in their childhood. Since most incidents occur when adults are not present, it is important to teach your children skills on how to handle bullying when it arises. Take time to discuss what bullying looks like and what they should do when they see or experience it. It will be time well spent, and your children will feel comfortable coming to you when they have questions. 8

Teen Creates Website to Encourage Budding Writers By Shannon Smith Akshaj loves to write, but he has also found a way to give back to the community doing what he loves. All of his book proceeds have been donated to local charities including; Sacramento Children’s Home, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Reading Partners Sacramento and Stanford Settlement Teen Center.
Meet Akshaj, a 13 year-old who has been writing since he was just four. We first met Akshaj when his second book, E-tron was published and we were impressed with his passion for writing. Now, just a few years later, this NP3 Middle School student has already written six books and four of them have been published!
We’ve enjoyed getting updates over the years as he continues to write and immerse himself in community projects. Recently Akshaj has started a website, WriteToLead.com. He shares, “I am very passionate about reading and writing. And it’s this passion that I’d like to pass on to other kids and provide them with an opportunity to share their voices and creative writing through the site.” WriteToLead.com is a safe and positive platform for kids 8 to 16 years old who
are rising story tellers, movie critics or article writers that are looking to express themselves.”I am sure we all agree that writing is a magical medium through which we communicate, connect and can be creative. I have been fortunate enough to have my books, articles and stories published on various websites and newspapers across the USA and India,” states Akshaj. He continues, “I want to give that same feeling of pride and confidence to other kids. I want to encourage budding writers to share their work on this website.” When Akshaj is not studying, writing or helping in community service projects, he enjoys biking and hiking with his family. He also loves to play piano. We have a feeling the future will remain bright for this young teen.

Books with Heart By Shannon Smith
In honor of Valentine’s Day we’ve gathered some sweet and heartwarming titles for all ages. We heart good reads that emphasize kindness, love, self-acceptance, compassion and empathy. Skip the candy and pick up a book for your little Valentine this month!
MY HEART by Corinna Luyken “My heart is a window. My heart is a slide. My heart can be closed...or opened up wide.” Some days your heart is a puddle or a fence to keep the world out. But some days it is wide open to the love that surrounds you. With lyrical text and breathtaking art this book empowers all readers to listen to the guide within in this ode to love and self-acceptance.
TRUE COLORS by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, illustrated by Sarah Walsh “I see your true colors | And that’s why I love you | So don’t be afraid to let them show...” If you love Cyndi Lauper’s beloved song, True Colors, you’ll enjoy the gorgeously hand-lettered song lyrics with bright, cheerful, inclusive illustrations. A perfect book for reminding someone you love them just the way they are.
LOVE IS WALKING HAND IN HAND by Charles M. Schulz There is a reissue out of this classic book that defines love through the simple acts and moments of everyday life with Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang. The timeless description of love and friendship is as important now as it was when the book was first published.
HERE COMES VALENTINE CAT by Deborah Underwood, illustrated by Claudia Rueda Cat doesn’t really like Valentine’s Day. It’s much too mushy, and no way is he making a valentine for anyone—especially not his new neighbor, Dog. One day, Dog throws a ball over the fence and Cat is in for a hilarious and heartwarming surprise about being perhaps, too quick to judge.
And one more that recently pulled at my daughter’s heartstrings and is on my reading list this month. OUT OF MY MIND by Sharon M. Draper This is the story of Melody, an eleven-year-old girl with cerebral palsy who is very smart, but unable to express herself verbally or physically. Melody has a photographic memory. Her head is like a video camera that is always recording. Always. And there’s no delete button. She’s the smartest kid in her whole school, but no one knows it. Most people—her teachers and doctors included—don’t think she’s capable of learning, and until recently her school days consisted of listening to the same preschool-level alphabet lessons again and again and again. If only she could speak up, if only she could tell people what she thinks and knows...but she can’t, because Melody can’t talk. She can’t walk. She can’t write. Being stuck inside her head is making Melody go out of her mind—that is, until she discovers something that will allow her to speak for the first time ever. At last Melody has a voice, but not everyone around her is ready to hear it.

Tips for Busy Tooth Fairies Interview with Miss Meadow, a Tooth Fairy for the Ministry of Molars
We talked to Miss Meadow from the Ministry of Molars, who shares, "The role of a Tooth Fairy isn't always easy.” She reminds us, “The best thing about your child's Tooth Fairy days is that they are happening when their imagination is still strong, so anything that you add to your family's Tooth Fairy story will only nurture it.” For example, let's tackle the super skeptical child who will 'forget’ to tell you they lost a tooth to see if the Tooth Fairy is real, or will straight up ask, “...but is she REAL?” One fun way to respond to them 'forgetting to tell you', is to play them a video from their Tooth Fairy. You’ll want to visit ToothFairyExcuses.com, for videos like one that explains the secret entrance was closed so your tooth fairy couldn't pick up your tooth because they forgot to tell their grown-up! All the videos are free, and were recorded by Happily Ever Laughter’s professional children's entertainers, so they actually aren't painful to watch as an adult (like some of things we've seen online). They have many 'whimsical' apologies to choose from, my favorite being the one that actually inspires them to clean their room before their Tooth Fairy shows up!
Another magical way of making your family's Tooth Fairy story special is by just being honest. If they ask, “Is the Tooth Fairy real?,” try saying, "I was keeping it a secret, but guess what...I AM your Tooth Fairy! There are actually a LOT of Tooth Fairies. It's a big job." You can stay on the honesty train (without derailing the magic) by answering their follow up questions like, "Do you change sizes when you are a Tooth Fairy?", with, "You know, I haven't actually looked at myself in the mirror when I'm your Tooth Fairy, so I don't really know!" You'll be surprised at how children actually take this honesty extremely positively, and still consider it 'magical'. Next time you need to quickly transform your child's face from being full of worry, to full of wonder, visit ToothFairyExcuses.com. They've got your back (errm...wings?). You Heard It From the Tooth Fairy!

UNEXPECTED HOMESCHOOLING BENEFITS– From Someone Who Was Homeschooled By Vida Mercer
Don’t worry, Mom. It will all be worth it. I was on the receiving end of all that effort. And the greatest homeschooling benefits I got were the ones my parents, perhaps, didn’t even think about. When I was homeschooled in the 80’s and early 90’s it was still relatively uncharted territory. Most people had never even heard of homeschooling. After you told people you were homeschooled, and explained what that was, it was almost always met with skepticism at best–if not outright scorn. My mother had a lot of concern about the school board trying to intervene (even though I was always well above grade level). And resources were few and hard to find. My parents were pioneers. And they were brave to even attempt it. But they knew in their hearts it was right–and it was the best thing they ever did for me. I entered college early and graduated summa cum laude. I had a very rewarding career in the legal field and then was able to transition my skills to work from home when my family became the priority. But, more than all that, do you want to know what I really owe to homeschooling–to my mom and dad? Here are the things that mattered most: I learned that I can learn anything on in front of a person deemed worthy to all day.” “What grade am I in? Well, that’s my own. I have always felt a pang of sad- dispense knowledge to me was transforcomplicated.” And yet, despite all that, I ness whenever I have heard someone say, mative. had friends–real friends. And you learn “I wish I could do [insert activity], but that real friends are made because of Instead, your children will learn to seek [insert excuse].” Reasons I have heard who you are. Not being in the same knowledge everywhere. And you will range from, “I don’t have anyone to show home room. Not wearing the same brand take an active part in that. The “teacher” me,” “My mother never taught me how,” of shoes. (a.k.a. mom) becomes the guide and “I don’t have time/money to take classes,” assistant in finding knowledge. So what And when you learn to be that different or the absolute worst one, “I’m not smart does that translate into for your kids in and still make friends, it becomes a lot enough.” adulthood? me if I didn’t miss the school dances, field days, pep rallies, graduation ceremonies– my answer was no. And it was honest. I knew I was getting something better. I learned to question authority (respectfully). What this means is that I look much deeper than titles or accolades. When you learn at an early age that having a teaching degree and a title “teacher” doesn’t make you the absolute authority on teaching, then what else will you question? And what this helps ensure is that no boss, no pastor, no one with a fancy title or degree, not even well-meaning friends, will be able to easily feed your children untruths or hold too much influence over them. Homeschooling, by nature, teaches children to search out fact and truth for themselves. Homeschooling taught me to question people’s premises, even when their logic might seem sound. It taught me to research topics with a variety of different sources. It taught me to never just “take their word for it.” This doesn’t mean that I don’t have great respect for people. In fact, I highly respect the effort that people put into their educational and professional achievements. I simply prefer to withhold judgement on matters until I’ve researched them myself. I have a healthy skepticism of anything that I haven’t
looked into for myself–even if the “experts” say so.
you don’t love your kids and they won’t learn these things–not at all.
When done properly, even you, Mom, will be subject to a healthy and respectful fact-checking.
But at the end of the day–when we ask ourselves why we are doing all of this–it’s because we love them. And this is just one way that we live that love out for them in our homes every day.
I learned to love learning–and to never, never stop. And that just says it all right there. That is the goal of so many of us homeschooling moms. We want that insatiable love of learning for our kids that stays with them far beyond school. We want them to see learning as both a useful tool and a joyful experience. I have great memories of learning at home. Peaceful ones. Funny ones. Happy ones. Frustrating ones where I pushed through and overcame. But the learning never stopped. It was just a part of life. And it still is–helping me reinvent my career path, helping me share homeschooling with others, helping me teach my children these same lessons. And even more than all of that... Homeschooling demonstrated to me that my parents must love me a tremendous amount to make so many sacrifices and fly in the face of the accepted wisdom to do what they believed was right for me. That taught me about love, about determination, about bravery. And I’m NOT saying that if you don’t homeschool
Above reading all the homeschooling books, scrutinizing all the curriculum, talking to the other moms, and even above my own experiences teaching my children–the most valuable thing I bring to my homeschool every day is what I have learned from being homeschooled myself. Because I learned that it works, in powerful ways. And this is what I wish I could leave every mom with who is homeschooling or considering homeschooling–keep on. It’s not the high test scores, or the college degree, or the great jobs that are the biggest successes–although those are great too–it’s the lessons like the ones I’ve talked about here. It’s the lessons there are no workbooks for. It’s the unintentional teaching you do every day that you press forward. So keep on, Mom. It’s worth it, from one who knows.

The Best Time to Find a Camp is Now! There’s a camp for every child and now is the time to find one! According to the American Camp Association® (ACA) research shows that camps are filling up earlier each year. So what are you waiting for parents? It may still be winter, but It’s the perfect time to begin your search for summer camp! Sure, ACA has a great camp tool on their website and Sacramento Parent always has lots of options for families this time of year, both on their website and inside the magazine. But this year families can actually head out to EDfair in
Roseville on February 23rd to talk with camp coordinators and learn more about their programs and offerings. We know choosing a camp can be tough! There are so many options: overnight or day camp, single gender or coed, one week or all summer, traditional or specialty programs, etc. ACA offers the following tips as you begin the process of choosing the right camp for your child.
• Be certain to include your child in the decision-making process. Together with your child, explore the camp options and examine the materials the camps provide. When children are better acquainted with the camp experience and more involved in the decision-making process, they will have less anxiety about going away to camp.
• Seek advice from a neighbor, friend, or relative, too. Often the best endorsement is from a family you know whose children attend camp.
• Ask questions! Reach out to camp directors and ask questions about their camp. Is the camp ACA-accredited? What is camp director’s background? What training do counselors receive? There are sample questions in articles posted on SacramentoParent.com or on the ACA website.

There truly are camps to meet every interest, price range, and schedule. Knowing your options, as well as your child’s personality, will help you identify programs from which your child will benefit most. Camp provides children with the opportunity to connect with nature, to participate in human-powered activities, and to benefit from personal and primary relationships. At camp, children make memories and gain skills to last a lifetime.
