We are the Walker family! My husband and I met and became friends over 16 years ago while attending Rocklin High School together. Over several years, our friendship blossomed into a genuine love and admiration for one another. We have three beautiful children together. Our oldest is 12 years old and is enjoying the adventures of middle school and competitive soccer. Our middle is 4 years old and although petite for her age, she has a fire and determination inside her and a passion for dance and music. Our youngest is 8 months old and is a very happy, smiley guy (almost all the time), he was just the sweetness our family needed.

After the First Year: Marking Childhood Milestones by Christa Melnyk Hines Your baby is about to celebrate her first birthday. You've probably been celebrating her development since birth in a baby book and snapping reams of photos along the way. After all, babies seem to change right before our eyes in their first year. But how will you record the exciting months and years ahead? Here are a few ways to capture moments, milestones and memories as your baby grows from toddler to teen. Say what?! Kids typically begin developing

the ability to speak in two to three word sentences between 18 months and two years. Keep track of their quips, funny comments and profound observations in a quotes journal. A simple notebook will do the trick. Running around? Write down what they said on a scrap of paper. Note the date and their age and slip it into your notebook or your purse to record later. Dear Sugar. Ask friends and family to a write a letter to your child on her first birthday. Or write a letter a year sharing anecdotes and observations about your child's development, achievements, disappointments and why you are proud of her. These letters make a precious gift for when your child turns 18. Remember this? Compile photos annually into a scrapbook or a digital photo

book. Among the snapshots of day-to-day outings, family vacations and birthday parties, include a page dedicated to highlighting your child's accomplishments for that year. For example: learned to ride a bike, started kindergarten, learned to swim, lost first tooth, first home run, etc.

Talk to me. While you'll probably video your child in action throughout childhood,

take a few minutes each year to do a short interview once they start talking. Ask questions like, "what is your favorite food?" "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "What is your favorite thing to do?" "Who are your buddies right now?"

A year in pictures. Have you ever seen a compilation of

photos of a child taken everyday in the same location for a year? It's fascinating to watch a child grow up in a photo time lapse. Try the apps "Photo 365" or "Everyday app". Keep it simple. Throughout the year, collect

mementos in a manila folder. Include projects, letters, report cards, notes from teachers, pictures and letters by your child, medical records and school photos. At the end of each calendar year, school year or birthday, go through the file. Pick out the items you want to keep. Write the year on the folder tab and stash it in a bin designated for your child. Try this on for size. Take an annual photo of your child in an oversized t-shirt with the date of their high school graduation. She'll be swimming in it for the first photo, but by graduation she will have grown into it. Patchwork of memories. Every child has t-shirts they love and wear over and

over again. Over the years, they'll also collect shirts of sporting events, favorite teams, camps, organizations and other activities that they're involved in. Hang onto those items and have a quilt made out of the shirts to give them when they graduate from high school or college.

Measure up. Many of us use a wall in the house to pencil in our kids' height over the

years. But what if you have to move or you want to repaint? A variety of creative wall-hanging growth charts are available on the market or you could DIY. Make a large wall measuring stick out of a 1” x 8” x 6’ wood board. Check out Pinterest for crafty designs and instructions.

Hand, hand, finger, thumb. Beginning with your child's first birthday, make wall

art out of his growing handprints or footprints. Paint an eight-inch square canvas with acrylic paint. Once the background paint dries, use a contrasting color and paint your child's hand with a foam brush. Then guide his hand to stamp it on the canvas. Use a paint pen to write the age of your child below the hand print. Voila! You have the first of a series of annual hand prints. Tell me a story. Record funny, harrowing and exciting stories throughout parenthood. Keep them in a file called "family stories" on your computer. Don't forget to include your child's birth story. Either record the anecdotes and stories in an audio file or write them out. You'll love pulling up and sharing these stories with your kids as they get older—and they'll love hearing them! Letterboxing

The Ultimate Homeschooling Activity by Vida Mercer Imagine an activity that combines geography, arts and crafts, problem solving, history, outdoor exercise, scavenger hunting, and super-sleuthing. Well, that is letterboxing! And it is an incredible way to add fun and adventure to your homeschool day.

So What is a Letterbox? It usually consists of a small box, containing at least a log book and a unique—often handmade—stamp, which is hidden in a publicly accessible location like a park. The gist of letterboxing is that you obtain clues to the location of boxes and search them out. (There are several websites devoted to this.) Your goal is to "collect" the stamp from the box by stamping it into your own personal log book. Think of it like stamps on a passport showing where you've been. And then leave your personal stamp—as proof of success—in the letterbox's log book for posterity. The clues can be straightforward instructions, geographical directions, or complex clues to decipher. (I think the tricky ones are the best!) Boxes are often themed around a particular historical landmark or meant to honor a person, place, or event. Letterboxing traces its origins to Dartmoore, England in the 1850's. Now there are over 90,000 active boxes in North America alone according to letterboxing.org. And you have probably passed right by some and never even known. If you've ever visited Gibson Ranch Park, you may have passed by several! Lucky for us, the Sacramento area is perfect for letterboxing with all its historical attractions and fabulous natural sites to explore.

How to Use Letterboxing IN Homeschooling This ultra-adaptable activity is fun for everyone, but truly perfect for homeschoolers because it is the ultimate in sneaky school. The kids will never even realize how much they're learning! Besides being exercise for their legs and problem solving skills, you can use letterboxing to...

DESIGN YOUR STAMP and CLUE Next—this is the fun part—design your stamp and clue. Who is your favorite park named after? You could write a clue containing some historical information about them and create a stamp to commemorate them in some way. Or get personal! Does your family dog have a favorite hiking trail? Why not honor them with a stamp and box named after them? Then, place your box carefully—following all pertinent rules - and publish your clue, on a site like letterboxing.org or atlasquest.com, so people can begin to find it! As a box owner, you will be responsible for maintaining your box. Check it regularly to be sure it's not damaged or missing, and replace the log book when it's full.

Pro Letterboxing Dos and Don'ts • Absolute stealth in retrieving and replacing boxes is a must! The last thing you want to do is raise the suspicion of non-letterboxers who may get curious about what you're doing and (knowingly or unknowingly) compromise the box. But this is actually what makes letterboxing so much fun—accomplishing your mission without being detected! • Respect the environment, rules of the property, and the letterboxes themselves. Common sense applies. Don't disturb wildlife, venture off designated trails, or damage natural resources. And don't forget to respect the boxes themselves. Replace lids securely and put them back *exactly* where and how you found them! • Safety first! Letterboxers need to be mindful of everything from traffic to poison ivy. Never attempt to place or retrieve a box from anywhere that seems unsafe, and be mindful of your surroundings at all times. Now get out and explore all the hidden letterboxes of Sacramento! The adventure is in the journey, not just the find.

Did you know that 80% of what all children learn is purely visual? This indicates that if your child happens to have an uncorrected vision problem, it could severely affect their learning and development and hinder their ability to perform optimally in school. Poor eye health has become increasingly common in school-aged children. Problems with vision can make it seem like your child has a learning disability, when in fact they just need treatment to see clearly and comfortably.

The first signs of a vision problem is typically blurry vision.

Here are nine warning signs that your child may be experiencing poor eye health and blurry vision:

1 Sits too close to the TV or holds a book very close when reading. If your child is consistently sitting very close to the TV or holding a book too close when reading, your child may be nearsighted or have blurry vision.

Constant eye rubbing. A common sign of eye strain in a child is frequent and intense eye rubbing. Eye rubbing may be caused by muscle balance or inability to focus which causes the eyes to tire out quickly. (Although, constant rubbing of the eyes can also be caused by allergies.)

Using a finger to guide their eyes when reading. When children are learning to read initially it is common for them to use their finger to guide their eyes, but this practice is expected to disappear as they age. If they are constantly losing their place while reading and using their finger to help them hold their focus and guide their eyes, you may want to have their vision checked.

Light sensitive or excessive tearing.

Closing one eye to see better.

Avoiding computers or devices.

Have you noticed that your child begins to blink vigorously when indoors, in bright sunlight or in the presence of camera flashes? If so, this increased sensitivity usually comes in the form of photophobia and can also lead to blurry vision, nausea and headaches. (Can also be a symptom of different eye conditions.)

Constantly shutting one eye when reading or watching television could be an indicator of a refractive or binocular vision problem which affects the ability of the two eyes to work together in unison as a team. Closing a single eye to read or concentrate on other work may be a sign that your child suffers from a certain eye teaming problem which is also referred to as convergence insufficiency.

Digital eye strain can cause a lot of pain amongst younger children who regularly use devices and computers. If your child suddenly begins to avoid using the computer, he may be experiencing digital eye strain which can literally cause pain and hurt his eyes.

Grades being lower than usual.

Squinting and tilting to see better.

Headaches and tired eyes.

If you notice a sudden drop in your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grades, she may be experiencing difficulty in reading what is being written and displayed on the board due to blurry vision. The chances of your child letting you know about this are very slim, so be sure to pick up on this as soon as you can and schedule an eye exam.

If your child begins to squint or tilt their heads during class to get a better view of the classroom board (which is something he did not do previously), this may be a sign. Please talk with your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teachers and ask them to inform you immediately if they notice these mannerisms in the classroom as well. (Until your child undergoes an eye exam, it is best that he sit closer to the front of the class for viewing purposes.)

Blurry vision and regular headaches may be a sign of eye strain. Even though headaches may be less common, they can indicate certain issues which can cause pressure or swelling behind the eyes. If you happen to notice any of these signs in your child, then you should set them up for an examination immediately. (Make sure to opt for an eye doctor that specializes in treating children and knows how to make them feel at ease in his/her clinic.)

schedule an appointment with your optometrist/ophthalmologist. Your child may not be able to communicate a vision problem, but they will thank you for recognizing that they may be able to see more clearly with treatment. SAVE THE DAY WITH A SUPERHERO PARTY PLAN BY PAM MOLNAR

Superheros have been inspiring boys and girls for years and this generation is no less captivated. If your child is one of the thousands of kids who want a Superhero themed birthday party this year, have no fear.

GAMES: VILLAINS AND SUPERS. For this game, you will need 10 plastic cups per player. Spread out the cups in an open area with half of the up and half of them down. Split the players into two teams. On go, the Villains turn them up, and Supers turn them down. At the end of two minutes, the winner will be the team with the most cups in their direction. DON‛T GET CAUGHT IN THE WEB. Use crepe paper to make a web in a hallway or small space. Make the web challenging by overlapping strands. Time the players to see who can make it through the fastest without touching or ripping the web. KNOCK DOWN. Print out faces of the Superheros’ nemesis like The Joker or Lex Luther and glue them to the front of cups or cans. Arrange them in a pyramid like a carnival game. Have the players use blue Frisbees (decorated like Captain America’s shield) to try to knock the villains down. HOW STRONG IS THE HULK? Have kids wear green oven mitts or Hulk hands and try to pop balloons using only their hands. It’s a lot harder than it looks.

CRAFTS CAPE. Despite what Edna Mode from the Incredibles says, you just feel more like a Superhero when you wear a cape.

Purchase colored men’s t-shirts for each guest Cut down the sides of the shirt and lay flat Remove the sleeves Cut along the seam of the shoulder to the neck Leave the neck intact, but cut off the front part of the shirt You are left with a cape that can be slipped over the head Decorate with scraps from the other shirts using hot glue

CANVAS PAINTING.

Paint the canvas a solid color ahead of time and tape a logo shape on the dried canvas. Place the canvas in a box to keep the mess to a minimum and have the kids drizzle or splat paint on top. Remove the tape when dried to reveal a cool Superhero logo design.

EXTRA FUN: PHOTO BOOTH. Put a blue sheet on the ground to represent the sky. Add clouds made of pillow stuffing or paper and skyscrapers out of cardboard. Have kids lay down to give the appearance of them flying and be sure to adjust their capes! Stand above them on a ladder or chair and take the picture. GOODY BAGS. Create a Bat signal flashlight with Batman sticker over the lens. Add a can of Silly String for Spiderman. Decorate a green Jello cup with a Kryptonite label or the Hulk’s face.
