The July Education and Enrichment issue is one of my ultimate favorites! It’s like unwrapping a present when we get our first peek at the custom illustration drawn up just for our little ol’ mag! This year, we are lucky to have an artist in the house! Christine is not only talented with a paint brush; she’s also our assistant editor, grammar ninja and calendar connoisseur.

I grew up with very talented musicians as parents. To this day I can still hear laughter, singing and piano keys in the background. One of my earliest memories is sitting in a case for a base drum as my playpen. Creative expression is in my bones! My grandpa was a sign artist and my dad has a knack for art, too! I remember being fascinated with the doodles on his desk calendar. He would draw these super cool men’s ties and hilarious funny faces. I went to a Waldorf school, which I couldn’t be more grateful for. Art was a big part of my education, so it just became a part of my life. I’ve also taken private lessons and have an AA in Arts & Culture from Sierra College.
IF YOU COULD CHOOSE A SUPERPOWER WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? Flying! The thing is, I dream that I’m flying pretty much on the daily, so I kind of feel like I already can. If I were to pick another one, I guess it would be....nope, still flying.
FAVORITE THING TO DO ON A DAY OFF? PJ’s, popcorn, movies (or a good book) and kitty snuggles!
STARBUCKS OR DUTCH BROTHERS? Starbucks! Because… well, their Grande Flat White & Bacon Gouda.
INSPIRATIONS? My earliest inspirations (besides my talented family) are the “Serendipity Series” and all children’s books by Stephen Cosgrove and Robin James, Chihuly and critters (mostly just the ones with four legs and fur, but sometimes bugs are kind of cool too).

DIY Summer Journal By Michelle Kopkash Looking for an entertaining, educational and kid-friendly craft that doubles as a keepsake? These do-it-yourself summer journals take less than 30-minutes to construct and once created, achieve the noteworthy purpose of recording your children’s memories in their own words and pictures. After I made the first journal with my son to document favorite summer memories, we became hooked and created a journal to record our family vacation, another for summer science project observations and one to detail his bug and critter collection. The nice thing about these journals is that your children can creatively embellish the covers and use their imagination, emotions and writing skills to fill the inner pages. It’s a great summer project for any age, whether your children are in preschool or grade school.
Materials Needed: • Five sheets of white printer paper
• 3-inch wide decorative masking tape or washi tape
• One sheet of card stock paper that is large • Stickers, gems, stencils, markers and crayons to decorate enough to serve as the journal’s cover the journal’s cover • Scissors
• Glue (optional)
• Large safety pin
• Hammer (optional)
• Sewing needle and colorful thread that coordinates with the color scheme of the cover
Creating the Journal: 1. Stack the five sheets of printer paper together and then fold them horizontally, creating a sharp crease down the center. These will serve as the blank journal pages. 2. To make the cover of the journal, fold the card stock paper in half horizontally. If needed, trim the card stock to coordinate with the size of the journal’s pages. 3. Place the folded sheets of printer paper inside the cover, aligning the folded creases. The inner fold will become the “spine” of the book. 4. To bind the journal together and create the spine, you’ll sew the white pages to the cover using a thread and needle. Before you sew, open the journal to the middle page. Use the safety pin to poke holes through the paper and cardstock down the folded crease. Take care to evenly space each hole. I used a hammer to lightly tap the safety pin through the pages and I spaced the holes a little less than an inch apart. Older children might be able to do this with adult supervision.
12 JULY 2016 sacramentoparent.com
5. Using the needle and thread, sew down the folded crease of the journal, using the holes you just created as your guide. Stitch in and out of the paper to create the spine, the same way you would sew material together. The knot for the thread should be on the outside of the cover, not the inside of the journal, since the outside binding will be covered later by masking tape. 6. Once you’ve sewn down the folded crease, sew back up to the top of the paper. Secure the binding with a knot, which again should be located on the outside of the cover. Be sure to supervise children when using sharp needles. 7. Finish binding the book on the outside of the cover with masking tape. Cut a piece of decorative masking tape that measures two inches longer than the length of your journal. Carefully place half of the tape down the front cover and then fold the tape over the spine onto the back cover. This secures the binding of the book on the outside and covers the thread. 8. Let your child decorate the cover of the journal with stickers, gems, markers, crayons, stencils and other embellishments. Label the journal according to its purpose. avoid the Summer Slide! By Christie Hamm The story of one little girl shows the power of summer reading. Henna, a 10-yearold living in an affordable housing community, was introduced to the Sacramento Public Library reading program by her local librarian and her apartment’s activities coordinator. At the beginning of last summer, Henna was learning English and struggling with the easiest early reader books. During that one summer, Henna read more than 200 books and ended up increasing her skill enough to tackle full-length chapter books. Henna’s mother, Uamra, said her daughter was initially motivated by the chance to win prizes. Uamra was delighted to see her daughter enjoying herself and improving her reading skills at the same time. Summer can be a time of new experiences, a break from routine, and a chance to relax. But it can also be a time of learning loss. The
“Summer Slide” is the approximately two months of learning and reading skills that children and teens lose when they aren’t engaged in educational activities. Reading loss is cumulative. Children who aren’t exposed to books during summer vacation can fall up to two years behind their classmates by the time they reach sixth grade. The good news is that reading as few as five books over the course of a summer can prevent this learning loss. Sacramento Public Library offers the Summer Reading Challenge at all 28 library locations and online as well, to make this summer’s reading engaging and fun. This summer, let your kids choose what and when to read. For example, Henna especially enjoys the Magic Treehouse series because it features adventures and a hint of danger. Students read more when they can select books of their choice based on their own interests. Summer is a time to worry less about reading level and more about reading engagement. Reading books that might seem too easy can help a reluctant reader feel more confident. In addition, more challenging books can help motivate a student to learn new vocabulary and develop patience to see a story through to the end. One mom, whose family took part in in the program in 2015, said she thought Summer Reading was a brilliant idea that put children into a challenging and competitive environment. She noted that the simple

idea of reading more to get more points, motivated young readers to go to the library and spend more hours reading. Of course, reading for fun doesn’t end with childhood. Teens participate in summer reading too, with many activities especially for them, including coding instruction, gaming, crafts and library sleep-overs. Adults are also encouraged to read for pleasure. Modeling reading as an enjoyable activity is a gift you can give your children that will last long after summer is over. It will encourage your children to do what you do. By taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge, you can be part of the greater Sacramento community of readers. PRINCESS POSEY & THE CRAZY, LAZY, VACATION by Stephanie Greene and Stephanie Roth Sisson
Reviewed by Lea, Age 6 I loved to read the book “Princess Posey and the Crazy Lazy Vacation” because Posey thought she was going to have a boring vacation, but she actually did not. Princess Posey had a great vacation because she lost a tooth, got a new bike, and had a sleepover with her friends Grace, Ava, and Nikki. At Nikki’s sleepover, Ava went home because she missed her mother while Grace and Posey stayed behind. Even though Posey missed her mother and the streetlight outside her room, she still stayed at the sleepover. I learned that if you think that you are going to have a boring vacation it might turn out to be a great vacation. www.Penguin.com

Meet Kati & Megan
Two moms thinking outside of the box to create their dream jobs! Edited by Shannon Smith | Photos by Cathy Kurtz, www.CathyKurtzPhotography.com Kati and family live in Citrus Heights, she has two boys, Mathew (11) and Blake (7). Megan and family reside in Fair Oaks and she has two girls, Cali (5) and Caylin (almost 2). These two moms are good friends and ex-preschool directors who dreamt of a job that allowed them to be moms first. They didn’t want to miss out on anymore field trips, but they also loved their work in Early Childhood Education. After bouncing many ideas back and forth, it was their mutual belief that children should be encouraged to play, make messes, express themselves and explore, that sparked their vision—to create a fun, new place where children put imagination and creativity to work through art. We talked to Kati and Megan to learn more about these two local moms and their latest endeavor, The Art Box. They invite you to come get messy (while your carpets at home stay clean)!
Let’s Paint a Picture...
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR STARTING THE STUDIO?
Kati: Megan and I were Preschool Directors together and good friends, we both knew that we wanted a job that allowed us to be better mom's to our children. We talked about what that would look like, but we were hesitant because Early Childhood Education had been our “thing” for more than 10 years—it’s what we know, it’s what we love. One day we were challenged by someone to find that one thing that makes us happy, that one thing about our job that makes everything worth it, as we were brainstorming together about what that was…the idea of The Art Box was born.
WHAT CAN KIDS DO THERE? Kati: We have two rooms for the children to explore, the front room is for "less messy" art, things like scissors, stamps, markers, play dough, chalk board, white board. The second room we call "The Splatter Zone," that's where we have a few easels set up and shaving cream walls and sensory bins that are usually filled with some sort of goop. At our painting easels, in addition to regular paint pods and brushes, we also put different items that have something to do with the theme for that month. For example, if our theme is Gourmet then we have different kitchen utensils and BBQ brushes and spatulas for the children to paint with. Children are encouraged to explore everything! We also have super fun Birthday Parties; every party includes a silly string war! 16 JULY 2016 sacramentoparent.com
Megan & Kati
WHAT'S SUPER POPULAR WITH THE KIDS CURRENTLY? Kati: Each child is so different! Some children love to explore the shaving cream wall and some would rather build with the boxes during our Construction themed month, some children spend most of their time playing in the sensory bin of goop, and some love to mimic the paintings on the wall with their very own paintings.
DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR PARENTS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT ACTIVITY FOR THEIR CHILD? Kati: I would say if a child isn't engaging in the activity right away, give them a little bit of time, sometimes we all take a bit to warm up.
HOW DO YOU INSPIRE A CHILD WHO DOUBTS THEIR ARTISTIC ABILITY? Kati: We are all about process art, not the finished product. We love to sit with the children and paint next to them while giving them encouraging words—every child is an artist!
DO PARENTS PARTICIPATE? Kati: Parents are more than welcome to participate! Sometimes it actually helps the child to dive right into it when their parents dive in first!
DO YOU OFFER ANY SPECIAL DAYS OR PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS? Kati: We will accommodate any child, on any day.
CAN YOU SHARE ANY CREATIVE ART IDEAS THAT KIDS CAN DO AT HOME OVER THE SUMMER? Kati: Shaving cream fun outside or fill a small squirt gun with paint and squirt a canvas!
next door
QUICK-FIRE Q&A IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Kati: It would be to have super awesome healing powers! I would rid the world of any and all boo boos! Megan: I would love to be able to fly (even though I am terrified of heights)! My daughter loves super girl and would be absolutely in awe to see her mom flying.
FAVORITE THING TO DO ON A DAY OFF? Kati: Spend time with my guys, or craft, paint, sew…anything that has to do with creating! Megan: Spend time with my family. We like to hit the local kid places in our area, plus we love to go to Lake Natoma for kayaking and paddle boarding. Family dinner gatherings are also a must, since our families live in the area, too.
ANY FAVORITE PLACES THAT YOU OFTEN FREQUENT AROUND TOWN? Kati: Our family absolutely LOVES to play laser tag at Xtreme Craze in Rocklin. After that, we always head over to Vampire Penguin for some shaved snow! Sushi Mono in Citrus Heights is also our favorite sushi place! There are so many amazing places in the area—I could go on and on… Megan: My favorite restaurants in town are Dad's Kitchen, Siam Patio… I absolutely love Thai food! Mikuni’s for the Wednesday roll and of course, Habit and In-N-Out Burger…our family loves to eat out! And, I cannot forget about my favorite coffee place, Dutch Bros!
HARDLY ANYONE KNOWS I...? Kati: am deaf in one ear! I'm not ignoring you I swear! Haha! Megan: love to read! Not like I have time being a mom of two, but when I have a free moment, I love to read my novels. You can get more information at www.TheArtBoxChildrensStudio.com or give them a call, 916-579-5051.

Benefits of Team Sports By Nora Heston Tarte No child is created equal. Some may thrive in athletics, while others may struggle to keep up. Some may need to learn how to cooperate with others and embrace a team mentality, while others may need help coming out of their shells. “I believe all kids can benefit from team sports. I also believe it takes patience to find each child’s learning style,” says Trinity Brown, an umpire-in-chief and board member of the Lincoln Girls Softball Association, with more than six years of experience coaching boys and girls teams in the Greater Sacramento area. Photo by Jill Lendahl Photography | www.JillLendahl.com
The Physical: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend a minimum of 60-minutes of exercise per day for children and adolescents. A great way to carve this time out in busy schedules is to sign your child up for a team sport. Making exercise part of a routine can help. Also, many kids who frown at going for a jog or participating in individual pursuits, will be more inclined to exercise if they find the process fun.
How one relates to the other is up for debate, but many theories support that the skills learned in team sports—such as discipline, time management, memorization, goal setting, determination and more—translate to the classroom.
According to a study conducted by Y-USA, 74 percent of children between the ages of 5 and 10 do not get 60-minutes of exercise daily. Not getting enough exercise leads to obesity, heart disease, diabetes and other serious and sometimes life threatening illnesses. Getting your child active now, will set them up to be healthier later in life.
Participating in team sports can bolster mental health, as well. The chemical reactions exercise create in the body reduce the likelihood of depression, while girls who participate in sports as they age, are less likely to develop eating disorders or use illicit drugs. The self-esteem and confidence children get through exercise and skill building, as well as through being part of a team, plays a part. As kids reach their goals and increase their stamina and grow other talents, they begin to see themselves in a more positive light.
The Mental: Studies support that kids who participate in team sports perform better in school. The CDC even noted a correlation between kids who participate in team sports in high school and dropout rates, finding high school athletes were more likely to graduate.
The Social: Whether a child is shy or outgoing, athletically inclined or a bit clumsy, team sports can have a positive impact. A child who struggles to make friends may bond with teammates over their shared passion, while a rambunctious child will enjoy an outlet for excess energy (which may in turn, keep them out of trouble).
During middle childhood (described as 6 to 8 years of age), children are becoming more independent, placing more emphasis on friendships and looking to find their place in the world. While team sports can garner positive outcomes for children of all ages, there is reason the CDC recommends parents get their children involved in group activities during this formative time. “Children that are more reserved benefit from the friendships that develop during a season. They also learn they have a voice in a crowd,” Trinity says. Children who are part of a team learn how to work together, build leadership skills and depend on each other. Team sports teach them how to manage expectations—winning and losing is not solely dependent on their individual performance—and to be reliable and less selfish. For example, a child might prioritize a team because they understand their efforts affect their teammates. “I think being accountable as part of a team, can encourage children to be more motivated than an individual sport might,” Trinity says. This team mindset commonly stretches beyond the field, court or pool and transfers into the workplace where people who have participated in team sports are more likely to be a team player and display positive leadership. “I believe that team sports are practice for life, and the skills learned carry nicely into everyday life,” Trinity says. At the same time, children are learning how to foster friendships and create new social circles. “I'll see young teens that came onto a team not knowing each other, all with their own personalities, and a few games later they all have special handshakes, cheers and nicknames for each other,” Trinity says. “I don't believe that there is anything that provides this kind of kinship that quickly, other than team sports.”

The Benefits of Starting Young Enrolling young children in team sports has additional perks. Not only are those who exercise regularly as kids more likely to become active adults, they’re also more inclined to profit from the social benefits of team sports. “In the younger age groups [becoming a team] often happens faster,” Trinity says. “I believe that this is because they are grouped for more activities at school. The older age groups tend to take longer, especially the pre-teen girls.” Nora Heston Tarte is a freelance writer and Sacramento State alum. It’s Grand! Are the kiddos going to be spending time with their grandparents over the summer break? Well, did you know there’s a camp for that? It’s called, Grand Camp!
Grandparents, along with their grandchildren, can go to camp together at Camp Sacramento (actually in the Sierras) from August 15-19th. Although it’s not free…there will be plenty to do. They’ll spend lots of quality time doing activities together, but there are some kid-only activities led by camp staff, too. This means grandparents will also have a little time to relax or join in some of the activities planned just for them. It sounds like five days of memory-making and bonding for the young and the young-at-heart and we think it’s a “grand” idea. For more information visit: www.cityofsacramento.org/seniorsummercamp
