Introducing Dr. Jennifer Ryan “We are excited to be working together after 14 years of friendship. We have similar philosophies, and treat our patients like we would our own children.” –Dr. Joelle Speed

Dr. Jennifer Ryan grew up in the Bay Area, where she graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in psychology. She received her DDS degree with highest honors from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in 1997, where she was awarded the Charles Sweet Award for Clinical excellence in the treatment of children. Dr. Ryan completed a three-year residency in pediatric dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco and received both her pediatric dentistry specialty certificate and a master’s degree in Oral Biology in 2000. Dr. Ryan believes that all cavities are preventable, and strives to provide parents with the knowledge to prevent cavities in their own children. Her philosophy of care is to treat every child the way she would want her own children treated. Dr. Ryan was in private practice in Roseville for eight years, and then in Folsom for the past five years before deciding to come back to the Roseville community. We welcome Dr. Ryan back to Roseville!

dear readers It’s been a great 2016 so far at Sacramento Parent. Yes, it’s only February but contrary to the much needed gray and rainy days we’ve been experiencing, things have been sugar and spice and everything nice around here. I know I typically take this space to share what’s inside... and trust me, it’s a good issue, rich in editorial covering everything from Valentine’s picks and specialized dental care to getting prepared for camps and excellent education options.

But this month (and maybe I’ve been struck by cupid), I just want to take a minute to show some love to the people and places that I feel lucky to know and work with. Thanks to our team of writers, photographers, designers and experts that support the magazine and help us to continue to evolve, grow and reach families. I’m also amazed by the sales team here, a group of moms who are super passionate about connecting families with their community and resources. (Plus, I really love the jokes we share at the office and our occasional happy hours.) And thanks to our advertisers. There are so many incredible organizations in our area and it’s with their support that we have been able to bring you this free magazine for 23 years and counting! We love their feedback, expertise and dedication and I hope if you are reading this, that you will show these local businesses some love and support this year, too! Happy Valentine’s Day! XOXO

Sugar, Spice & Everything Nice!

Valentine’s looks you’ll love...

By Phoebe Verkouw | Photography by David Fletcher, Arrow Maker Media

Call me old fashioned, but Valentine’s Day is a holiday I absolutely adore. Yes, all the mushy stuff is nice, but most importantly; it’s a day dedicated to LOVE. Valentine’s Day isn’t just for a significant other, but also for telling the people nearest and dearest to your heart how much you really love and appreciate them. Yes, Valentine’s Day epitomizes love for me, but it also brings out my love for all things sweet and fashionable. Let’s face it, desserts can cheer up any blue day and Sacramento has become quite the dessert capital. This year on Valentine’s Day do yourself a favor and indulge in one of Sacramento’s finest dessert houses. My background is teaching people how to look fabulous on a budget. Over the years I’ve taken my passion for the frugal fashion into other aspects, like dining out and finding new and exciting things to do in Sacramento that won’t break the bank. I’m here to teach you that you can get a beautiful outfit and eat your cake, too! Ginger Elizabeth is hands down one of Sacramento’s most notable and delectable sweets spots. Nestled in between 19th and 18th on L Street (1801 L Street), it feels like walking into a slice of heaven. It’s hard to miss the artistically displayed cornucopia of French macarons and chocolates when you enter. I’m telling you the place is like magic and you won’t have to shell out tons of money to savor the treats. Take your mate or your favorite friends there for some French macarons and rich hot cocoa. At $1.75 per French macaron or $4 per hot chocolate you can definitely afford to take the whole family! For more information about Ginger Elizabeth, go to www.gingerelizabeth.com—trust me, your taste buds and wallet will not be disappointed this Valentine’s Day! Continued on page 12 sacramentoparent.com FEBRUARY 2016 11

Valentine’s continued from page 11

Okay ladies; let’s chat about where to find your perfect outfit. In this article I am highlighting some places that are not only amazing, but frugal friendly: 1.) Cuff’s (2523 J Street)—an uber stylish and affordable boutique that has new pieces as well as an amazing vintage section. 2.) Crossroads Trading Company (2935 Arden Way)—a buy/sell/trade store that has been my go-to for over 20 years. If you love designer pieces, but don’t love spending designer prices, Crossroads is your place! And they are buying for winter right now. Take your items in to get 50% trade or 35% cash. 3.) Thrift Town—if you love a super duper bargain, then make your way down to one of Thrift Town’s three stores in Sacramento. Go to thrifttown.com to sign up and become a VIP member and you’ll constantly be emailed coupons and sale alerts! They quite frequently have 30-50% off sales. 4.) Freestyle Clothing Exchange (2101 L Street)—a buy/sell/trade store that also buys your gently used, in fashion, weather appropriate clothes for or 50% trade or 35% cash.

You may not be the type of person that wants to go out at night for Valentine’s Day. Most of you reading are probably Mommas and would prefer doing something low-key during the day wearing something cute, but day friendly. Ginger Elizabeth is your perfect stop and how cute are these looks from Cuffs and Freestyle Clothing Exchange?! The comfy wrap is an excellent transitional piece that can be dressed up or down. (Cuffs for $39, in store now) The fitted red pea coat is by BCBG, new with the tags still on for $398—yours at Freestyle Clothing Exchange for $40! All three outfits from headto-toe are under $100. Told you looking stylish didn’t have to make your wallet cry.

As for the kiddos, we know how fast they grow and how annoying it can be to spend heaps of money on clothes that they will quickly outgrow. This is why thrifting is such a wonderful option for parents. Thrift Town is the PERFECT place for parents to get budget friendly looks that are also cute. I mean, how adorable are Rory’s Levi’s with his Nautica button up. Would you believe that I didn’t spend more than $5 for the pieces?! The adorable vintage bowtie is from Cuffs. And Maddison’s dress was only $3.99!

12 FEBRUARY 2016 sacramentoparent.com

Now ladies, let’s not forget about the dressy part of Valentine’s Day. If you are going out that night, I’m here to tell you that you can look like a million bucks for less than what your dinner will cost. Miya is wearing a red and white polka dot Kate Spade dress that would have retailed new for $500, and I found it for $45 at Freestyle. Her necklace is also Kate Spade found at Crossroads for $20! The 60’s Mod style dress is from Cuffs and it wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day with out fun heart tights. For another super bargain highlight, we have Michelle wearing a white dress made by Nasty Gal and a detachable bow belt. Both are from Thrift Town and together came to $6.99!

Let’s also not forget beautiful accessories. Why not have fun and wear something sparkly and pretty on Valentine’s Day right? I love my designer pieces and Crossroads never lets me down! Spruce up your look with statement earrings or a necklace. These J.Crew necklaces were all under $20 at Crossroads, new would have retailed $100+. Big thanks to Susan McCarley for providing the lovely heart shaped collage piece. If you love one-of-a-kind collages, check out her work on Facebook under Artful Excavations—Mixed Media collage & Digital Art.

This Valentine’s Day have fun with your family and loved ones. Make sure to treat yourself at Ginger Elizabeth, and head on over to one of the stores I mentioned for a unique and budget friendly look! Meet Akshaj... Edited By Shannon Smith “Today we met Akshaj, one of the youngest authors of two published books and supporters of Make-A-Wish. The proceeds from his book sales always benefit a children’s charity, and for his latest book, he chose Make-A-Wish! Thank you for your outstanding work, Akshaj!” Facebook.com, Make-A-Wish Northeastern California and Northern Nevada, August 2015.

An inspiring young author and 10 yearold, fifth grader at Natomas Charter School. His motto, “With reading come ideas, so keep reading and penning those ideas in the form of writing.” Not only has he published two books already, but according to Sumiti, Akshaj’s mother, Akshaj is believed to be the youngest Indian American Author. He is an editor of a SciTech Kids column in the kid’s magazine, “Amazing-Kids.” He was the youngest nominee for the “N Factor Awards” under the “Exceptional Youth” category and received a certificate signed from Senator, Dr. Richard Pan. He’s also received a Letter of Appreciation from Secretary of State, Ms. Debra Bowens for a history essay he submitted about the Gold Rush Era in 2014. Akshaj also wrote an article, “Cheating,” which landed him a Certificate of High Merit from Creative Communications. Pretty impressive resume, right? We talked with Akshaj and his mother to find out more about this local, talented 10 year-old.

Sumiti Shares

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT AKSHAJ. Akshaj is very loving and respectful child. He loves to talk, so he is able to make friends easily and he’s been a responsible and independent child since a very young age. Akshaj loves participating in community activities like park clean ups, book drives, blanket drives and food drives. He also loves to play piano and has been playing since second grade. He creates his own music notes and is excellent at playing the “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter” themes. As you can probably tell, he has many interests and currently Akshaj has a keen interest in coding and wants to make his own game app.

WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER HIS PASSION FOR WRITING? We noticed his love for putting words together when he was around 3 to 4 years of age. One of the first things he composed was a simple poem comparing the beauty of flowers in the backyard with me, his mom.

WHO DO YOU THINK INSPIRED HIM, ARE YOU A WRITER AS WELL? In 2012 (1st grade), he was reading the encyclopedia and was intrigued by the idea of mummies in Egypt. As he delved deeper into the study of Egypt, he decided to write his first story “Adventures in Pyramids,” which was submitted for PBS writing contest. Since then, there has been no stopping Akshaj.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE WRITTEN BY YOUR SON AND WHY? As parents we are proud of all of his work. As a mother, something very close to my heart is a poem he wrote titled, “My Mom” for my birthday in 2015. Plus, his choice of words and expressions used in chapter two of his book “E-Tron,” which described how Emmanuel left to join the military, left us both emotional. WHO ASSISTED WITH THE PUBLISHING PROCESS AND HOW HAS HE HOW CAN PARENTS HELP THEIR CHILD BECOME A PUBLISHED BEEN SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT HIS BOOKS? AUTHOR? Both of his books are self-published and his dad helped with the process. We used Facebook to spread the word about his books and Akshaj also promoted “Super Mouse” in a Health and Fitness Expo at Inderkum High school. He also gave a piano performance and talked about his book, “E-Tron” during the Celebration of the Arts in honor of Cesar Chavez at the same school.

As parents, we would suggest to always encourage your child and provide a platform to meet their creativity needs. Keep looking for writing workshops and story writing contests.

Q&A With Akshaj WHAT ARE YOUR BOOKS ABOUT?

“Super Mouse” is a chapter book about a Mouse with superpowers and how he fights against the Cheese Monster to save Mousecity. His motto is, “Be brave, no matter what.” “E-Tron” is a pre-teen novel. The story revolves around the relationship between Emmanuel, a 21 year-old and his grandparents. Emmanuel sacrifices his freedom to fulfill his grandparents dream to be in the military.

HAVE ANY OF YOUR FRIENDS READ YOUR BOOKS, AND WHAT DO THEY THINK OF THEM? My close friends have read them and liked them a lot. They all are proud of my accomplishments.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANOTHER CHILD WHO WANTS TO WRITE A BOOK? My advice would be, read as many books as you can. With reading come ideas.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ABLE TO GIVE BACK TO LOCAL CHARITIES? I feel all happy inside when I see their joyful faces. I have everything I need, so I want to step up and help others in my own little way. For my first book, I chose to give proceeds from the book to Sacramento Children’s Home. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of less fortunate kids and wanted them to have lots of books to read. For my book, “E-Tron,” I chose Make-A-Wish to give someone a chance to fulfill their dreams and wishes.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO PURSUE WHEN YOU GROW UP? Right now, my aim is to get into either Harvard or Stanford for my higher studies first. I want to pursue writing as a passion till I am 70 years of age and I would love my books to be Caldecott winners. As a career, I have so many ideas, like I would love to become like a NASCAR driver, though my parents think it is dangerous. It would be fun to become an Actor and a Movie Director and direct one of my own stories. A LEGO Design Engineer would be fun too, I could write my own manuals for instructions and safety. I also want to keep reading books to kids at libraries, even when I grow old!

WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING TO WRITE NEXT? ARE THERE MORE BOOKS TO COME? Yes, I am working on few more ideas! Here is a sneak peak of my next book, “E-Tron, Part 2:” “Deaths happen, lies are told, and Evil is fought. Emmanuel finds truth and learns even in darkness, there is light.”

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? AND DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE AUTHOR? I am currently reading, “The Colossus Rises.” My favorite author is J.K Rowling, her books are amazing—they’re so good, that I sometimes stay up till 11:00pm reading them! I also like “Goosebumps” and reading emotional stories like “Wonder and Crenshaw.” Check out “E-Tron” at: http://www.amazon.com/E-Tron-Akshaj-Mehta-ebook/dp/B00WF85IPC sacramentoparent.com FEBRUARY 2016 17

Hour of Code Movement Continues By Nora Heston Tarte

As part of Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 7-13), students, parents and educators around the world participated in Hour of Code lessons, serving nearly 200 million students worldwide. The global effort exists to give children everywhere an opportunity to experience computer science. And while CSEd week has ended, the need for computer science education has not.

In an increasingly digital world, computer science relates to almost every field— it’s not just about those who want to become programmers and developers anymore. CSEdweek.org reveres it as “a foundational field for every 21st century career or field of study.” Consider the following: (adapted from CSEdweek.com) • More than 50 percent of all jobs in STEM (science-technology-engineering-math) are computing jobs. • Research shows that students who study computer science also perform better at math. • Computer science is one of the highestpaid college degrees for new graduates. • Computer programming jobs are growing at two times the national average, with more job openings than graduates to fill them.

• Many K-12 schools do not offer computer-programming classes. • California is one of 26 states where computer science classes can be used to fulfill a science or math requirement for high school graduation. Computer science can be taught yearround using the one-hour tutorials, available in more than 40 languages, on HourOfCode.com. Tutorials are compatible with browsers, tablets, smartphones or other “unplugged” platforms. Many Sacramento schools participated in the Hour of Code in December, utilizing the website’s applications to teach computer science skills. Bret Harte Elementary School was one of those schools. Code continued from page 19

Principal Lorena Carrillo says 95 percent of the school’s K-6th grade students took part in Hour of Code during CSEd Week. School staff chose to participate to further their students’ critical thinking skills in relation to computer science. “A lot of it has to do with exposure… we’re trying to teach them that computer science [includes] skills you need to know for the next century,” she explains. Carrillo sees the program as a stepping-stone for Bret Harte as they continue to align themselves more and more with STEM education. “It helped [students] learn basic programming on the entry level,” she explains. And that isn’t all they learned. The tutorials also relate to the higher level of thinking and strategies synonymous with common core standards. Not only did students create characters and learn how to control them, they also worked on keyboard skills, sequencing, programming loops and more. “This really gave it more of the computer science/mathematical angle of how you can use computers,” says Carrillo, who adds much of the computer use in

schools focuses on language arts. “The kids love it.” Part of the recommended introduction process includes getting students amped about computer science. Videos are available featuring notable figures like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Black Eyed Peas founder will.i.am and NBA star Chris Bosh, all talking about the importance of programming. At Bret Harte, they pull students in by explaining the breadth of careers computer science relates to, such as video game programming, Carrillo shares. The Hour of Code doesn’t only teach computer science concepts; the instructions are purposefully crafted to lend the experiment to other important skills. For example, Hour of Code developers recommend teachers implement an “ask three, then me,” rule. In short, this means all students should ask at least three peers for help before consulting the teacher. This teaches collaboration, teamwork and peer support. The Hour of Code was only ever meant to act as an introduction to computer science. Educators are encouraged to

continue the self-directed tutorials even after the 60 minutes are up and implement the Hour of Code into curriculum wherever it fits. Carrillo says computer science education is an important part of Bret Harte students’ weekly curriculum and all students spend at least two hours on the topic each week (6th graders spend much more). Not only do they utilize the progressive tutorials available on the Hour of Code website, they also work with programs like the Google-based Nearpod (a classroom tool to engage students with interactive lessons and assessments that students can access on any device). “Computer science exposure is so essential,” she says. Parents can apply Hour of Code in their homes, as well. CSEdweek.org offers a collection of computer science-based activities on their website, and the Hour of Code tutorials can be applied to a home setting. Make it a family activity or invite some friends over to complete an hour-long activity. Local camps and workshops are also available right here in Sacramento. Visit CSEdweek.org/learn/local to learn more.

Specialized Dental Care By Dr. Cindy Weideman Growing up as the daughter of a pediatric dentist, I experienced the enjoyment in caring for special needs children. When I began my journey as a pediatric specialist, I developed a passion to make dentistry even more comfortable for these children and their families. Working with programs such as Families for Early Autism Treatment and First Five Sacramento has guided my choices for individualized care and developing a dental team who strives to ease anxieties and make the dental visit something to look forward to. I have found that well-established home care, finding a compassionate and experienced dental office, and knowing what to look for in the mouth can assist both parents and the dental team in creating the most rewarding and productive dental experience possible. Preparation is the key to the beginning of a positive dental experience; creating a predictable, fun and relaxing oral hygiene routine at home is crucial. A thoughtful routine may include the familiarity of brushing and flossing in the same room at the same time twice daily: starting with the front teeth and moving to the back ones, or any sequence that promotes remembering to get every tooth clean. Additions to this method could include singing the same song, using a three minute tooth timer, playing a favorite song that lasts three minutes, counting the teeth as you brush, saying “eee” to clean the front teeth or “ahh” to clean the back teeth, or using a positive mantra such as: “Mommy loves you and wants you to have clean teeth!” Proper positioning and clear instruction or guidance is imperative for the special needs individual. Wheelchair positioning Dr. Weideman with a happy patient. can determine effectiveness of hygiene; the head should be tilted back so that the caregiver can stand from behind and have better sight into the mouth. When using a battery-operated toothbrush, practice on fingernails or skin to get someone used to the noise and the feel of the bristles. Most importantly, clearly describe what you are doing; “I am going to brush your back tooth by your tongue. Please stay open wide.” This will reduce anxiety that comes from not knowing or seeing what is happening. When searching for a dentist make sure that you choose a board certified pediatric specialist. These dentists have two years of added training after dental school and have passed a rigorous examination process. They possess knowledge required for medical complications and conditions that can occur in the mouth associated with common medications. These pediatric dentists are likely to feel comfortable treating your special needs family member as they grow through adulthood as well. They appreciate and help educate caregivers at each appointment. Most have a separate questionnaire that will help the dental team know what to expect and how to plan the visit for optimal comfort. Some specialists recommend sedation techniques. In certain instances this is necessary; however, it should be used as a last resort. Individuals do well with a reward system for good behavior, and others love to interact by counting or singing during their individualized appointment. Role-play is a great way to prepare for the dental office visit. The key is to incorporate aspects of dentistry in an imaginary dental setting such as: pretending to be a patient or a dental professional, simulating the sounds such as swishing of water or suction, Continued on page 28 sacramentoparent.com FEBRUARY 2016 27

Dental Care continued from page 27

wearing gloves and a mask, using a mouth mirror and a flashlight, practicing how to clean and count teeth, smelling the toothpaste, and talking about how important it is not to get cavities. There are several conditions of the mouth and teeth that are typically seen in special needs patients. These include bad breath from dry mouth caused by medications, erosion or wearing of tooth enamel due to acid reflux, tooth grinding that leads to varying degrees of tooth wear, and cavities because of inconsistent brushing and flossing and use of sugary foods as a reward system. Some less common conditions include swelling of the face and tongue, altered taste, increased bleeding risk, gingivitis, and nervousness. Informing your dentist of any of these signs will enhance the care prescribed and helps collaboration with the pediatrician and other medical professionals. Prevention is fundamental to good oral health for special needs individuals. Ask your dentist about fluoride, sealants, xylitol, and a protective diet. Protective foods include milk and cheese for prevention of enamel wear and increased saliva flow, apples and cranberries for antibacterial action, and crunchy whole

foods such as fresh vegetables and fruit that naturally clean teeth. Consult the dental team about the types of toothpaste, toothbrush, and floss that is right for your situation and what is available in prescription strength to help your oral hygiene program at home. Brushing and flossing techniques and products vary for each person, and their method of application can be customized. Be sure to ask the dentist alternative ways to maximize the effectiveness of keeping the teeth clean.

All families face challenges every day, but, couple those with a special needs child and there is little time left over to focus on dental health. While it can seem overwhelming at times, delays can lead to further problems that may only progress. When you find the right dental home your anxiety and fears will disappear. Families with children who have special needs have found an important place in my heart. They are remarkable, memorable, and loving members of our dental family.

Dr. Cindy Weideman is a board certified pediatric dentist with over 26 years of experience treating children and young adults. She has two offices; Weideman Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics located in Citrus Heights and Smile Island Pediatric and Adult Dentistry in Rocklin.

Keeping Residential Camp Costs Budget Friendly Camp is a life-changing experience—one that’s possible for every child and every budget. Even though the experience is priceless, there are affordable options for families. Parents looking for budget-friendly camps should keep the following in mind: • The ACA camp community generates a projected $216 million annually for camp scholarships. Don’t be afraid to call the camp director and ask if financial assistance is available. • Contact your area’s local office of the American Camp Association (www.ACAcamps.org/norcal). • Check with your church or synagogue. • Get in touch with social services groups in your community. • Visit individual camp websites. Most will clearly outline whether or not they offer financial assistance for their campers. Assistance is also available from the government. Parents should inquire into whether the camp participates in income-eligible subsidy programs, for instance through Title XX. About ACA: The American Camp Association® (ACA) is a national organization; 10,000 members strong, it is actively working with over 2,700 camps. ACA is committed to collaborating with those who believe in quality camp and outdoor experiences for children, youth, and adults. ACA provides advocacy and evidence-based education and professional development, and is the only national accrediting body for the organized camp experience. For more information, visit www.ACAcamps.org.
