hen senior Deirdre Hughes sat down to write her college essay, she had five options from which to choose. Gone was the familiar favorite on the College Board’s Common Application, “Write about a topic of your choice.” Topics for 2014 are much more focused, calling applicants to search within themselves. After assessing her options, DeeDee’s eyes, and her heart, settled on Choice 5: “Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content. . .” DeeDee chose to write about the Catholic Church. Writes DeeDee, an accomplished painter, “Years of Catholic education and Sunday Mass allowed me to become an independent thinker. From a young age I was presented not only with Catholic values, but also with Catholic history and beliefs. As an art student, I have attempted to use my work as a means of communication; a way to cross cultural barriers and embrace different traditions through my own observations of the world.” What is art, if not a means to communicate? An expression released into the world to be processed and filtered by the masses. Art changes people, and people change the world. The Church became DeeDee’s refuge and her muse, her observations and devout faith made tangible on the canvas where she combines the inner light of faith with dark streaks of color. You see, on this canvas, is DeeDee’s story, a gift, she could not keep to herself.

Dearest Friends, As I reflect on the last year, I am in awe of God’s love for us. Each day, I watch our students and see the love of God manifested through their energy, their zest for learning. As a student myself, many years ago, I never imagined how transformative a Sacred Heart Academy education could be. Never could I have imagined. . .

a senior retreat like Kairos, directed by students, steeped in the Gospels; truly a lifechanging experience for all those involved.

our annual musical filling the Shubert Theater. Our core value of social justice was incorporated so well by director MaryLee Delaney and producer Fran Saukas. At the end of each performance our veterans were recognized for service to our country. In addition, veterans were visited and delighted by handmade cards from the cast and crew throughout rehearsals. Yes, God’s love is contagious.

a year when nearly every one of our 13 sports teams made it to the States level of competition, and our athletic program named a CIAC Michael’s Achievement Cup recipient. Through the support of our entire school community, volleyball and basketball teams finally played in an air-conditioned gym. Our teams, our community make us very proud.

the horror of school violence and the vulnerability of schools today. Thanks to the help of so many, Sacred Heart Academy has implemented a methodical safety plan, including electronic keys, video cameras, and numerous drills. Our students are our treasures and we do our very best to keep them safe.

this privilege of being the first president of Sacred Heart Academy. What a gift to minister side by side with our principal, Sr. Maureen Flynn, ASCJ, ’81, and the dedicated faculty and staff who are the driving force behind our exemplary institution. Each day I delight in being a part of our school community and watching our students grow into Excelsior Women.

Despite my wonder at what I could not imagine, I am most grateful for our religious traditions begun more than 60 years ago on Greene Street — First Friday Liturgy, Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the May Crowning. These traditions are the foundation of the Sacred Heart Academy experience and bind us together as a community, forging those “strong bonds formed at SHA.” Because of you, Sacred Heart Academy has been able to maintain its outstanding tradition of being the premier Catholic school for young women in the greater New Haven area. Because of you, our graduates work in area schools, hospitals, businesses, and homes, as compassionate women of integrity, fully embracing the gifts God has given them to strive “ever higher.” Because of you, women who would otherwise not be able to afford Sacred Heart grace our halls. Because of you, Sacred Heart Academy flourishes. God bless you for helping us to realize our dreams!

In the Heart of Christ,

ast summer seemed a short one. After a grueling winter and chilly spring, students could not wait for the sun and relaxation that are the promise of every summer season. However, the allure of summer was not tempting enough to deter many students from exploring their passion for service. Their volunteer work took them near and far, and all would agree they found their experiences to be life-changing. Jillian Laggis ’15 traveled across the world to India on a mission trip with a group called Lifeworks. Explains Jill, “We did our service work in Mcleod Ganj in Dharamsala, which is a Tibetan refugee community. There we worked with two organizations—Lha and the Tibetan Children’s Village. Both organizations focus on teaching Tibetans English to improve their lives in exile.” After spending nearly a month working with children in this village, Jill found it difficult to leave them and return home. Jill gushes, “It was such a touching experience. It has definitely inspired me to keep volunteering.” Jill’s commitment to missionary work was cultivated through the many service projects offered at Sacred Heart Academy. “Ultimately, Sr. Lany Jo inspired me with her cheerful attitude and compassionate personality. After

6

I went on a mission trip to Camden, New Jersey during my freshman year, I got my first real taste of service and wanted more.” Beatrice Alexander ’14 spent two weeks at a Guatemalan orphanage where she painted children’s rooms and helped to take care of infants. Traveling with a group of peers, Bea was stunned by the horrid conditions. She could not help but reflect upon her very personal connection to these children: “I was adopted from Russia at 16 months and many of the babies I was working with were around the same age. About a quarter of the way through the trip I finally came to the realization that I could have been one of those kids in the orphanage. I didn’t, and still don’t, think it is fair that I am blessed with such an incredible life, while these kids are suffering.” As her time in Guatemala grew short, Bea became inspired by the words of John F. Kennedy: “To those whom much is given, much is expected.” Shares Bea, “My life’s purpose is to give back. This experience has opened up a path in my life that truly makes me happy. I can’t wait to bring about positive change in the world. This experience helped define who I am, where I want to go, and what I want to do.”

While Bea reconnected with a piece of her past, vowing to return all the blessings bestowed upon her, Paige Dostie ’15 also spent time volunteering in an under-developed country. Paige participated in a mission trip to Haiti where she painted a school, assisted in an orphanage, and visited patients in a hospital. Shares Paige, “The trip changed me a lot. I don’t really ask for things I don’t need anymore. After seeing what Haitians don’t have, you do everything you can to give things to them. They don’t complain about not getting their next meal.” But food, Paige came to realize, was not the only necessity which the children of Haiti lacked. In fact, Paige, a soccer player, couldn’t help but notice how much the Haitian children wanted to play soccer. “Some of the kids walked an hour to get to the soccer game and then they played soccer for another three hours. They didn’t even have a real field.” Upon her return to the U.S., Paige gathered her soccer team and told them of the great need in Haiti. Together they gathered cleats, uniforms, and soccer balls.” President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, Ph.D., ASCJ, ’71 shared, “Soccer gives the children of Haiti some enjoyment. And it is so nice to see our girls doing this service on their own.”

“Ms. D’Ambrosio always reminds us that service should not end after you have finished your sophomore service hours. She also taught me that each act of service should teach something. This lesson really stuck with me because I learned so much more about myself through my experience this summer. I learned that I have patience, friendliness, and what it takes to work with the elderly. Ms. D’Ambrosio told us that service makes you feel good, and those words could not be truer!”

Paige, however, was not the only student to spend a part of her summer working with Haitians. Alex Ryan ’15 and her family traveled to the Dominican Republic to assist Haitians living there. Shares Alex, “My family was very interested in going on a service trip together; my mom did research and found the Foundation for Peace organization. Our mission group of about 30 people from all over the world worked with the people of San Joaquin. We dug a trench with a pipe going across the community that would supply clean, running water. We also built a water tower, a latrine, and we set up a medical clinic and provided medication for whoever was in need.” In San Joaquin, the need was great and Alex was proud to be a part this team effort. She adds, “I went to the Dominican thinking I would change these people’s lives but in fact they ended up changing mine. I truly love helping others and I look forward to taking part in more volunteerism.” After much research, Phoebe Costello ’15 decided to volunteer on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. On her “working vacation,” Phoebe helped insulate mobile homes, fix leaky roofs, build decks and bunk beds for kids, and install outhouses for the Lakota tribe. In addition to manual labor, Phoebe and her group were also able to learn about the Lakota culture. Shares Phoebe, “Much of the tribe had been denied their culture and learned Catholicism. Many of them felt displaced, caught between two cultures and there is a lot of resentment.” Happily, Phoebe noticed many positive changes during her working vacation: “As we worked, the kids came out to play with us. I met one

little girl who had a home made of earth. She was learning her native language in addition to English, and she was growing up in her own culture. The Lakota culture has no word for ‘children’. They are sacred beings, translated as ‘God’s gift.’” While Bea, Jill, Paige, Alex, and Phoebe traveled far and wide in their service work, Cara Walsh ’16, Abbey Lawlor ’15, and Meghan Glynn ’15 found a host of opportunities in SHA’s very own backyard. For Cara and Abbey, what began as fulfilling the sophomore service requirement at Sacred Heart Manor for elderly Sisters, became a labor of love. Shares Cara, “We both fell in love with all of the Sisters and had to come back week after week. We started on June 17, and went as often as we could until August 17.” Abbey echoes Cara’s sentiment, “Originally we had just planned on volunteering for one week, but after those five days we could not possibly say goodbye to these Sisters to whom we were already attached! I realized very soon that I was incredibly blessed to be able to spend such valuable time with these Sisters.” In fact, the girls had such a positive experience, that when the school year began, they formed Sister to Sister, a club that provides an opportunity for SHA students to interact with the older Sisters. “We knew how much the Sisters enjoyed seeing young, happy faces and knew that they would really benefit from it! We named the

club ‘Sister to Sister’ to represent the bond we wish to create between the SHA sisters and the Sisters at the Manor,” declares Abbey. For Cara, service is nothing new. She elaborates, “I have grown up in a family where we are always serving our community and helping one another. My mother was diagnosed with MS when she was pregnant with me, and ever since I was born, my family and I have volunteered and participated in the Cheshire MS Walk on Team Jenifer for my mom. In 2007, my family and I started Cheshire’s Lights of Hope; we light up the town with luminaries and raise money for our community.” Abbey shares SHA’s influence on her desire to continue volunteer work: “Ms. Ms. D’Ambrosio told us that service makes you feel good, and those words could not be truer!” As Cara and Abbey visited Sisters at the Manor, Meghan Glynn ’15 returned to the Mount over the summer to work with the elderly.

“I volunteered at the Clelian Center every Monday and Wednesday. I went there as part of my sophomore service last year, and I had a great experience so I decided to spend more time there this summer. I met a lot of great people.” Meghan approached this work with her typical good natured sense of humor, “There was a man who was hard of hearing, and we often got into screaming fights, all in good fun.” Meghan also used her volunteer work to build on the skills she learned in Spanish class, “I spent a lot of time with a woman who spoke only Spanish, so I tried my best to communicate with her and keep her company.” Undoubtedly, the two were able to learn much from each other! As Meghan reflects on her time at the Clelian Center, she acknowledges that there were some emotionally difficult moments: “One of the most heartbreaking and rewarding people was a woman who had a hard time understanding why she was at the day care center. Every morning she would cry because she wanted to go home, but underneath her anger and sadness, I got to know a really sweet person who just wanted a friend. I was really sad to say goodbye to all my new friends, and I promised I’d come back and visit.” She continues, “I didn’t go far away for my community service but I honestly had an unforgettable experience!” Indeed, an unforgettable summer for all these stellar students!

Two Sisters, Two Spectacular Annies

S

cribbled into the margins of her Annie script is the fragment, “Amoye not being home.” Just these four words. But buried within them lay the deep connection between Nia Mote ’09 and Annie, the eponymous young heroine of the 1977 Broadway musical. “Amoye” is Nia’s father, who travels frequently for his work. Says Nia, “Mr. Clowdus and I were working through the song, “Maybe,” and he told me to write words that would make me a little more emotional because I wasn’t putting enough emotion into the song.” She elaborates, “I was heading into my crazy teenage years, and I sometimes felt as if Amoye wasn’t ever home. I’m not an orphan, but I related to how Annie wanted a normal family.” In 1998, Nia’s father left Indonesia and came to America as a refugee. “As a journalist for the largest newspaper in Indonesia, my father wrote various incendiary articles, as well as participated in various political activities promoting the independence of his people,” she shares. Along with her mother and siblings, Nia arrived in America under political asylum in October of 1999. “Just in time for Halloween,” she fondly recalls. In 2006, Nia, who was just beginning her sophomore year at SHA, was cast as Annie in that year’s musical production. Her family, including then ten-year-old sister Kanita Mote ’14, watched proudly from the cozy gymnasium seats. Despite her lack of any formal voice training, Nia wowed both her family and her audience. Says Kanita, who reprised the role of Annie in this year’s musical production, “I had never seen Nia act or dance, much less do both, and sing at the same time. This was her first musical, and my first to watch. I remember laughing quite a bit. Nia is so different from Annie in real life, so watching her skip around and dance onstage was quite interesting.” But for Nia, the skipping, singing, and acting were all part of the magic of the stage. During rehearsals Nia found herself constantly

making notes in the margins of her songs as a way to “step into Annie’s head and heart.” This approach is very different from the method in which the Annie of 2013, Kanita, stepped into character, “I think that I connected most with the way that Annie refuses to show fear or vulnerability except in small moments and in her little soliloquys. I think that as I get older, it becomes harder to really connect with my emotions and allow myself to be vulnerably open. Annie grew up in Depression-era New York, a time and place where misery and sadness were rampant. I think that the reason she is so optimistic is that she’s just had enough of the sadness and misery, and so she does not want to make anyone else sad and miserable. She keeps up her constant optimism for this reason.” Directed by MaryLee Delaney and produced by Fran Saukas, both SHA teachers, the 2013 production of Annie packed the Shubert in the same way the 2006 production packed the gymnasium of Sacred Heart Academy. Both women agree that the Mote sisters are stars in every sense of the word, with their bright outlook and palpable energy. And in the Shubert production, Nia got to watch Kanita, now an almost-grown-up senior in high school, dazzle in the role that she played just seven years earlier. Raves Nia, “I am incredibly proud of my sister! She was absolutely fantastic. That being said, I couldn’t help but recall what I did in those scenes and compare my interpretation with hers. She and I are VERY different people, and her Annie was different from my Annie. She was phenomenal!” Despite the fact that both sisters adamantly maintain they are “VERY” different from one another, they certainly agree on the role Sacred Heart musicals played in their lives. “I could go on forever talking about SHA musicals!” Nia says. “Being in the musical is like being in a crazy, energizing family.” And little sister Kanita agrees wholeheartedly, “SHA musicals are a huge part of my life. So much time is spent putting these shows together, and it is the most rewarding feeling in the world to see everything finally coalesce into the final production. Some of my best memories are from the musicals, and I have learned so much.” Whatever “tomorrow” holds for these sisters, they will surely take center stage! ith a world-wide network of Sisters, the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus minister to the many needs of the world’s under-privileged. But in some communities, the need is too great for the Apostles to face alone. To address this overwhelming need, the General Superior of the Apostles, Sr. M. Clare Millea, ASCJ, ’65 initiated the Mission Solidary Project, linking the United States Province with congregation missions. Shares Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71, “One of the Apostles’ missions is in PortAu-Prince, Haiti, and Sacred Heart Academy has been partnered with them to help support them.” This mission, The Institution of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, serves Haitian children, and Sisters also serve in a PortAu-Prince medical clinic. Sr. Sheila has dedicated herself to helping the Apostles in their mission. Her project, “The SHA Haiti Project” has already met with great success through the sale of water bottles after school and at athletic events. “I wanted to do something that wouldn’t be too hard for the students to follow through with,” Sister elaborates. Students have been donating

bottles of water to Sr. Sheila’s cause, which has allowed substantial profit to help the children and the sick of Haiti. In addition to the monetary donation from the sale of water, Sr. Sheila organized a shoe drive to benefit the SHA Haiti Project. Students donated a pair of sneakers or three dollars for children who would otherwise go barefoot. At an assembly in October, Sr. Sheila presented Sr. Miriam Cunha, ASCJ, Provincial Superior of the Sao Paulo Province, with 200 pairs of sneakers to take back to Haiti. Student response has been phenomenal. Sr. Sheila, beaming with pride, shares, “Our students are amazing, and they make Sr. Maureen and me very proud.”

f Gabrielle Dinsmore had been alive today, she would be six years old. Born with a serious heart defect, she passed away just before her third birthday. Though her life was brief, her spirit persists, largely due to the efforts of her loving mother, Louise Rosarbo Dinsmore ’86. Before Gabrielle’s birth, Louise spent years fundraising for non-profits, including political campaigns and hospitals. She worked for five years as the director of annual giving at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. In her work, she always incorporated her faith and strong Catholic values. Shares Louise, “Sacred Heart Academy shaped me into the woman I am now. I’m very focused on incorporating faith and friendship with hard work and structure. Catholicism is very much a part of my daily life.” These values, instilled through years of Catholic education, led Louise to found Partners in Philanthropy, LLC, a Rhode Island based full-service consulting firm that helps non-profits raise money. “Everyone needs to find their talent. This is mine. I choose to work with clients who have a mission,” adds Louise.

to initiate a pen pal project with the children of Haiti and our dream is that one day we might travel to Haiti to volunteer our time working with our Sisters there.” Perhaps the highlight of the morning was Sr. Sheila’s announcement that beginning in fall 2014, Sacred Heart will establish The Sr. M. Clare Millea, ASCJ Excelsior Lecture Series, designed to encourage engaging discussion about themes that reflect Sister’s passion for scholarship, leadership, and service to the Church.

After the death of their beloved daughter, Louise and her husband Jeffrey founded a nonprofit of their own: The Gabrielle Dinsmore Heart & Hope Fund. They have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help alleviate some of the financial stress heaped upon families impacted by heart disease, heart defects, and the severe feeding issues that often accompany heart problems. Says Louise, “My passion is helping families who have gone through a similar struggle.” Additionally, the Dinsmores have partnered with their daughter’s cardiologist to create Gabrielle’s Heart Camp, an overnight camp for kids with heart defects that includes a fulltime medical team to assist any child who needs more care. Louise’s efforts are helping thousands of children and their families. The Gabrielle Dinsmore Heart & Hope Fund reaches out to families in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts and was recently recognized by The Collette Foundation as its 2013 charity of the year. In these ways, Gabrielle lives. And Louise takes comfort in knowing that other children with heart problems will delight in the little joys of life just as Gabrielle did. Louise’s life’s work is clear, “I want to honor my daughter’s memory.” And HEART honors Louise Rosarbo Dinsmore, our Excelsior Woman.

AROUND THE ACADEMY

Senior Named National Merit Semifinalist Congratulations to Caroline Kohnert ’14 who has been named a Semifinalist in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program competition. The program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. About 1.5 million juniors in nearly 22,000 high schools entered the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2012 PSAT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. These academically talented high school seniors now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for nearly 8,000 National Merit Scholarship awards, worth $35 million, that will be offered next spring. A sophomore transfer student to Sacred Heart Academy, Caroline excels in both academics and extra-curricular activities. She is a member of Science National Honor Society, French National Honor Society, Latin National Honor Society, German National Honor Society, and Math National Honor Society (Mu Alpha Theta). Her awards include the Silver Medal in the National French Contest and Harvard Book Award. Caroline is a member of Key Club, Knitting Club, and Math League; she enjoys participating in the holiday parties thrown for the elderly Sisters at the Sacred Heart Manor. Outside of school, Caroline plays the clarinet and was a member of the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestra. She also enjoys reading, bike rides, yoga, traveling, listening to music (especially classic rock), drawing, and baking. Caroline has a great passion for language and culture. Her father, Alexander, is German, and her mother, Dianne, Chinese, so she has grown up with an appreciation of different cultures. Having learned German as a second “first” language, she considers it an important part of her life. In 2012, she obtained a German language diploma affording her the opportunity to attend a German university. Insists Caroline, “Even if I go to college in the U.S., I will definitely do some study abroad.” Caroline, who plans to study engineering in college, offers, “Growing up, I played Legos instead of Barbie dolls, and discovered in school that I really love math and science.” Congratulations!

Congratulations to seniors Madeline Ross (left), Olivia Kelly (center), and Mary Campbell Disbrow (right), all of whom have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students demonstrated “exceptional academic promise” on the 2012 Preliminary SAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, placing in the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition.

Mu Alpha Theta Inducts New Members

Juniors Jenna Fortunati (left) and Margaret Mirabella won first place in the state of Connecticut for their National History Day documentary, Martha Matilda Harper: The Start of Franchising. These students were also recognized as finalists at the national competition in September. More than 2,000 students from our state submitted projects for National History Day with 1,250 competing in the 2013 district contests, and 400 winners going on to the state level competition. Only the first and second place winners are sent on to the national competition. Elaborates Sr. Maureen Flynn, “Jenna and Margaret developed ideas, researched a topic, and created a video to explore a person whom they believed was instrumental in making history. These young women tackled this project on their own and showed that they are truly Excelsior Women and life-long learners.”

Thirty-seven new members were recently inducted in to the Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society. Members are academically qualified juniors and seniors who maintain strict grade point average requirements and excel in high level math courses. Current juniors are encouraged to enter a math research project in the Sacred Heart Academy Science Fair in February, and some will go on to the Connecticut Science Fair in March. All members participate in Math League, a group that competes in the American Mathematics Contest (AMC) and the New England Math League, and are active in the Study Buddy tutoring program. The induction was held in conjunction with the Science National Honor Society in September. Congratulations to the 2013-2014 officers and newly inducted members!

Student Internship Program Stronger than Ever

Nicole Mecca’14 at Artspace.

This summer marked the fifth session of Sacred Heart’s Summer Internship Program. Founded in 2009, by Mary Gniadek ’04 as a gateway for students to experience future career interests before applying to college and choosing a major, “SIP” has fostered more than 50 internships since its inception. For five summers, mentors have guided students in everything from engineering and economics to industrial design, science research, and careers in the medical field. “I created this program because I believe first-hand experience can be highly valuable in determining one’s goals. As an alumna I am confident that the students possess the maturity, intelligence, dedication, and creativity that such internships require,” offered Mary. This summer 10 rising seniors and two alumnae participated in the program working in the art and museum, business and investment management, child development, engineering, entrepreneurship, law, pharmacy, and health & science related fields. Students

worked closely with mentors, mostly alumnae, for a minimum of two weeks in order to gauge whether or not a certain career path was right for them. Some students remained with mentors for the entire summer because they found their internships to be so rewarding. Maddie Ross ’14 worked with Dr. Nilanjana Maulik at the UCONN Health Center observing laboratory techniques, performing PowerPoint presentations at lab meetings, designing experimental protocols, and searching scientific papers. Leslie Torres ’14 spent her days with Lindsey Heffernan ’04 at The Barnum Museum giving tours, and helping with clerical work while Meghan Stacy ’14 interned at the West Haven Child Development Center in the role of RN as health consultant. Senior Sydney Sullivan’s engineering and entrepreneurship internship involved research and marketing at a startup design studio. Attorney Sr. Mary Ellen Burns, ASCJ, ’74 mentored Kanita Mote ’14 in immigration law at Apostle Immigrant Services while Molly Duffy ’14, mentored by Beth Botti ’97, researched mutual funds,

variable annuities, and other investment instruments. Morgan Brokaw ’14, mentored by current parent Mary Lou Galushko, worked in a pharmacy, Nicole Mecca ’14 interned at Artspace, Jess Venables ’14 assisted author Rosemary O’Brien ’81 on her book Pocket Parks, and Allie Buscarello ’14 participated in the Yale Discovery to Cure program. Recent graduate Tess Cersonsky ’13 served at the Connecticut Agricultural Station. Dominika Bajguz, ’11 interned with Amy Vashlishan Murray, Ph.D., ’98, a faculty scientist at Emerson College, building a genetic resource for assaying neuropeptide function in C. elegans, a transparent roundworm and model organism. Interested prospective mentors, alumnae, or friends of Sacred Heart Academy, can contact shaship@sacredhearthamden.org for more information. How proud we are to see such collaboration between our students and our alumnae!

Social Media Connecting the #SHA Community Since Sacred Heart launched new social media platforms in April, alumnae, parents, students, and friends have been more in touch with school happenings than ever before! Our new Facebook fan page (Sacred Heart Academy—Hamden, CT) has more than 1,000 “likes” and is updated daily with school news, fun photos, and kudos. Sr. Maureen Flynn’s Twitter account (@SHAhamden) gives followers an inside look at a day in the life at Sacred Heart Academy from the perspective of the principal. With the start of fall sports in September, the Athletic Twitter account (@SHApacers) has become the number one spot to find live game updates, final scores, and of course, witness the unmatched school spirit of Sacred Heart Academy! For those who are not yet signed up, all of our social media updates, posts, and tweets can be seen on the mashup page at sacredhearthamden.org/mashup. Just click to connect!

Stop & Shop A+ Rewards Program Returns this Fall Once again, from October 14, 2013, through March 20, 2014, Sacred Heart Academy will participate in the Stop & Shop A+ School Rewards Program. Last year, alumnae, parents, and friends of SHA earned nearly $5,000 for our school! This year, our goal is to have at least 1,000 registered users shopping to earn cash for scholarships! Remember, even if you registered your card last year, you must re-register online this year. Each time a registered parent or friend shops at any Stop & Shop in any state, Sacred Heart will earn money to support our Tuition Assistance Program and other educational needs. You can track the number of points you earn for Sacred Heart by checking your grocery receipt or checking online when you create an account at www.stopandshop.com/ aplus. Each month, the number of those who have registered and the amount of cash awarded will be updated on the Stop & Shop website. Sacred Heart will receive a check at the end of the program – it’s that easy! To register your card online today: 1. Go to http://www.stopandshop.com/aplus 2. Under the “Customer Zone” heading in blue, click the “Register Your Card” button. 3. In the gray box entitled, “Sign in to Register Your Card,” enter the first three letters of your last name and your Stop & Shop card number. Then click the “Continue to Listings” button. 4. The easiest way to select our school is to use the “Express Registration Form.” Simply enter our school’s code, 07652, next to “School 1” (You can be registered for up to two schools at once.) Click the “Register” button to complete your registration!

Greetings from the Office of Mission Advancement, Sacred Heart Academy is blessed to have so many special friends. As we continue to offer the best in Catholic education, we are grateful for all that you do and all that you are. You are truly a special blessing to us. With the support and generosity of our alumnae, families, and friends, the Office of Mission Advancement, despite this difficult economy, was able to accomplish a great deal in the 2012-2013 academic year. When praising OMA on their successful fundraising and cultivation efforts, President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71 said, “Our greatest accomplishment this year was our ability to offer more than $400,000 in financial assistance to those in need, enabling families to send their daughters to the Academy even when faced with monetary difficulties.” As I begin my eleventh year at Sacred Heart Academy, I thank you for making the 2012-2013 school year one of our best! The Office of Mission Advancement encompasses Admissions, Alumnae Relations, Database Management, Development, Public Relations, Special Events, and the website. OMA is entrusted with furthering the school’s mission and ensuring the vision of Sr. Sheila. During the 2012-2013 academic year, OMA carried out these successful accomplishments: • We surpassed last year’s fundraising total by more than $100,000. • We doubled our Endowment fundraising goal. • Alumnae gifts to the Annual Fund, Tuition Assistance Program, and to the Endowment, as well as attendance at special events, more than doubled. • We set a new Homecoming record when more than 400 alumnae returned to their alma mater. • Parent participation increased substantially in terms of giving and attendance at events. • More than 100 parent and past parent volunteers—the most ever—participated in FantaSHA, our signature fundraising event. • The annual Legacy Mass, Hearts of the Community Mass and Award Ceremony, and Sophomore Grandparents’ Day served as successful cultivation events. • Admissions efforts yielded a new freshman class consisting of 132 caring, compassionate, and capable young women; we now have 506 students in our care each day. • We continue to lead area schools in our Media Relations. • Our excellent print and electronic communications enhanced engagement with our constituencies. • We expanded our use of social media with the additions of a school Facebook page, Twitter accounts, YouTube channel, “Heart Speaks to Heart” blog, and mashup webpage. • The website continues to evolve as a viable method of communication for current students and parents as well as for prospective students and families. • We have made improvements to the database resulting in our ability to locate nearly 800 “lost” alumnae. Our events and activities are reflective of the Sacred Heart community, fostering a beautiful place to learn, to work, and to worship. Gratefully,

Debbie Camner Director of Mission Advancement

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

Building on Excellence

A Road Map for our Future – 2011 - 2014

Dear Friends, In 2011, Sr. Maureen and I initiated Building on Excellence, a three year plan, a blueprint for the future of Sacred Heart Academy. Due to our outstanding faculty and staff and supportive parents and friends, the plan is close to completion, with only two tasks remaining—upgrades to both the fine arts and athletic programs. Task forces with representatives from all facets of SHA will carefully review both programs, gather new ideas, and enhance our existing programs. As Building on Excellence winds down, I am thrilled to inform you that we have selected an architect to facilitate the creation of a master plan for our campus. This will include an examination of building and space needs, as well as programmatic building needs. This exciting endeavor is crucial to the development of the master plan. I am truly inspired by all of our accomplishments, and I look forward to the future of Sacred Heart Academy. How very blessed we are to be Building on Excellence! God love you,

Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71 President

Endowed and Named Scholarships The Sacred Heart Academy Endowment Fund was established to provide need-based scholarships for our students. Gifts to the Endowment Fund help reduce tuition for recipients and secure the dreams of all talented young women who qualify, regardless of their ability to pay. While gifts in any amount can be made to the Endowment Fund, donors also have the option of establishing named scholarships with gifts of $15,000 or more. Join us in this priceless investment in our students! Please contact Debbie Camner at 203287-8181, x318 for information on contributing to the Endowment Fund or establishing a Named Scholarship.

Why I Raised My Hand “I raised my hand this year, as I did last year, because my husband and I believe that all young women, regardless of their circumstances in life, should be able to have a Sacred Heart Academy experience. Being a former SHA student and proud alumna isn’t just about the education. It’s about the values, the experience, the community, the chance to better oneself and to grow. It’s about life lessons and making connections, deepening your faith and forming enduring relationships. Sacred Heart is a beautiful community and part of the wonderful legacy of the school is the ability to give back. I think Hands Up for Heart is one of the best parts of the auction!” Christa Mrowka Bernacchia, Alumnae Leadership Team & Class of ’93

The 2012-2013 Year in

Special Events!

I

n conjunction with the musical production of White Christmas, Sacred Heart Academy students sold ads for the 2012 Ad Campaign. In total, $70,000 was raised to underwrite the musical and to aircondition the Philip Paolella, Jr. Recreational Center – a cool treat for all! Thank you, students!

Hearts of Community recipients, past and present, gather for a group photo.

Sophomores and their grandparents enjoyed a continental breakfast, faculty and student presentations, songs from White Christmas, and a prayer service in the Chapel at the fourth annual Grandparents’ Day: Learning across Generations celebration. The time in Chapel was especially meaningful, as each part of the service honored the bond between granddaughters and their grandparents. Each year current students are invited to celebrate the tradition of legacy at Sacred Heart with mothers and grandmothers who have attended the Academy before them at the annual Legacy Mass, a beautiful celebration that takes place on the First Friday of Advent. This is a very special event for families with deep roots at Sacred Heart, who represent the “Living Legacy” of Sacred Heart Academy’s alumnae. At this annual celebration, we also welcome the “Greene Street Girls” who, along with Sr. Antonine Signorelli, ASCJ and the Apostles, helped forge the first “strong bonds” which all alumnae value so highly. The Hearts of the Community award is offered to individuals and organizations that have served Sacred Heart Academy and the greater community. Recipients exemplify the spirit of community, compassion, and commitment. 2013 Awards were presented during a Mass of Celebration on the joyous Feast of the Epiphany to Thomas and Phyllis Giglietti, Mariette B. Moan, and

Golfers Dave Ditta (second from right) and his foursome including, Mike DeMatteo, Robert Blake, and Scott Bristoll (left).

Kelly O’Leary ’99. Our most heartfelt congratulations to these recipients for their dedication! Thank you for being the Heart of our Community! Black & White…Oh, What a Night!, our annual auction and signature fundraising event, raised close to $140,000 to support the Academy. The gymnasium, decked out in black and white was a sight to see with more than 300 attendees, also getting in on the act in their “black and white – as they liked” attire. Perhaps the best part of the evening, Hands Up for Heart, raised nearly $40,000 as generous donors raised their hands to support need-

based scholarships. A special thank you to co-chairs Brian and Mary Clifford Laucks ’79 for organizing such a visionary event, as well as to the committee of more than 100 current and former parents, alumnae, and more than 50 student volunteers helping out that night. The 21st Annual Sacred Heart Academy Golf Tournament was held at Race Brook Country Club in Orange. This year’s outing raised in excess of $23,000 to benefit the Golf Tournament Scholarship Fund, enabling more young women in need of financial assistance to attend the Academy. The day truly was a hole in one! 49

Alumnae Association Hits a Home Run with Trip to Yankee Stadium

I

t was a beautiful Saturday in the Bronx when alumnae, families, and friends traveled to New York to watch the Yankees take on the San Francisco Giants. Whether looking out at the iconic Yankee Stadium field from the Audi Yankee Club or the Malibu Rooftop Deck, the Yankees’ shutout game offered the perfect combination of food, fall ball, and fun for all in attendance! It was a memorable weekend for baseball fans, with the Yankees 6-0 win over the Giants on Saturday and the celebration of Mariano Rivera Day on Sunday.

Alumnae Zumba into SHApe!

K

ristie Balisciano ’94 is helping SHA dance its way to a healthier and fitter lifestyle! Since September, Kristie has taught Zumba classes at Sacred Heart on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. A dancer and a certified Zumba instructor, Kristie has returned to SHA to instill in her students the same passion for dance and fitness that helped her to lose over 100 pounds through the Latin-inspired fitness dance program. “I loved my first class so much that shortly thereafter I decided to become a certified instructor. And the rest, as they say, is history,” she offers. During her classes, Kristie takes time to share with her students about her own weight loss, and offers tips that helped her and many others succeed in reshaping their bodies. Kristie’s energy and enthusiasm about dancing her way to better health and “partying into shape” is an inspiration for all who take her classes.

Oktoberfest SHAlumnae Style

W

hat better way to celebrate the season of pumpkin carving and cardigans than with a cold brew? BAR Restaurant of New Haven hosted the first-ever SHA Alumnae Pizza/Beerfest in October, bringing together some of the best pizza in New Haven and micro-brewery beer, making for a perfect fall night out. Alumnae and friends mixed and mingled while enjoying live music by our own professional singer/ songwriter Christa Gniadek ’08, and learning the history of beer and BAR’s unique brews by brew master Jeff Browning. Cheers to SHA!

Sacred Heart Academy ‘Charmed’ by Alex and Ani

I

n August, the Alumnae Association hosted a gathering at Alex and Ani New Haven. Dozens of alumnae, parents, students, and friends crowded the downtown store to purchase the immensely popular stackable charm bracelets to support the Academy. The event raised friends and funds for the Sacred Heart Academy Scholarship Fund and because it was so successful, the Alumnae Association will host a second “charmed” evening at Alex and Ani Westport on February 3, 2014.

Alumnae Return Home ı Reunion Day 2013

T

he sound of the school bell ringing at 2:10 p.m. signaled the start of Reunion Day 2013 as alumnae from all decades entered the Philip Paolella, Jr. Recreational Center. This year’s reunion program, held in June for the very first time, nostalgically recalled the school day at Sacred Heart. President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71 and Principal Sr. Maureen Flynn, ASCJ, ’81, along with Director of Alumnae Relations Sr. Mariette Moan, ASCJ, ’77 and President of the Alumnae Association Ann Criscuolo Pari ’67 welcomed alumnae back to school and spoke about how the Academy has reached new heights in the years since their graduation. Following the “assembly,” alumnae enjoyed tours of the school, class photos, and the opportunity to reconnect at a wine and cheese reception in the Alumnae Courtyard Memorial Rose Garden. The reunion liturgy in the Mount Sacred Heart Chapel was as beautiful as ever, with members of all reunion classes participating. After Chapel, the revelry continued as classes celebrated “strong bonds” off campus! In 2014, reunion classes will again celebrate at the start of summer on Saturday, June 7. Mark your calendars!

60th Anniversary ı The Class of 1953 “Our reunion weekend went so well, especially on Saturday at the Mount. There were 21 members of our class in attendance! I think we look pretty good for 60 years out of school!” -Nardina “Deanie” Rescigno ’53

50th Anniversary ı The Class of 1963 “I am proud to say that I was part of the reunion committee for the Class of 1963! We sponsored three events in addition to the program at the Academy. All were well attended and enjoyed. It took only moments for us to reconnect with classmates, some of whom we had not seen in 50 years. Many thanks to all who attended and to Barbara Medford Deflumeri ’63 who spent much time and effort bringing our weekend to fruition. We received updates, addresses, and ‘news’ from many who were unable to attend. It was truly memorable and successful!” - Carol Smith Witkowski ’63 “Really enjoyed our 50th Reunion! If anyone is hesitating about attending her own reunion, I say ‘Go for it!’ ’’ - Carolyn M. Hunihan ’63

25th Anniversary ı The Class of 1988 “Reunion ’13 was fantastic! It was wonderful reconnecting with old friends and classmates, many of whom I haven’t seen in 25 years. We had a great day at SHA and a wonderful evening at Park Central Tavern. I’m looking forward to our next reunion already!” -Lynette Glynn ‘88

“All the members of our class took a special moment during reunion festivities to remember our dear classmate, Lisa Martone Massaro ’83, who passed away in January, 2012. After a wonderful day at SHA, we continued to celebrate with a terrific dinner at Eli’s on Whitney. With a group of 63 “Unicorn” alumnae it was one great party!” - Margaret Nicholls Hallinan ’83 (pictured here with Sr. Mariette Moan, ASCJ, ’77) (pictured above) 45 years later, members of the the Class of 1968 are all smiles in “assembly”, and (below) members of the Class of 2008 enjoying their first reunion.
