FALL 2017

2016-2017 HONOR ROLL OF GIVING

Living in the STREAM FROM THE TIME OUR DOORS OPENED OVER SEVEN DECADES AGO, FAITH HAS BEEN AT THE CORE OF EVERYTHING WE DO AT SACRED HEART. OUR CURRICULUM IS ROOTED IN CHRISTIAN VALUES THAT PROMOTE THE GROWTH OF THE WHOLE PERSON IN AN INTELLECTUAL ENVIRONMENT THAT IS BOTH NURTURING AND DEMANDING.

I

n this issue of HEART, you will read about the concept of STREAM. STREAM began as

STEM — an education philosophy focusing

on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The A stands for the Arts, added to the mix for their importance in developing creative thinking and design skills. And Catholic schools nationwide have added the R for Religion to

create STREAM — reiterating their commitment to incorporating faith-based values into the curriculum. More important, you will see how members of our faculty — particularly those in the arts and sciences — incorporate the R and the concepts and values of STREAM into their teaching.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends, What an exciting time in the rich history of Sacred Heart Academy! Steeped in the charism of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, for over 70 years the Academy has continued to move forward, ever faithful to our goal: inspiring young women to build a better world. Throughout these pages there are countless examples of how Sacred Heart continues to meet the changing needs of educating young women for the 21st century, motivating students and alumnae alike to make a difference. With our motto, Excelsior, as the driving force, the Academy officially kicked off Ever Higher — The Campaign for Sacred Heart Academy on November 6. As a result of the master plan completed in 2015, the campaign will support the addition of a 7,500 square foot wing, adding a new school center with a clearly defined entrance. The center will provide a student commons — a place for our young women to gather with friends for study, friendship, and leisure, and will free up existing space to better accommodate learning for both faculty and students. Since our founding in 1946, Sacred Heart Academy has enjoyed the reputation of having an exemplary academic program. With the creation of the gene sequencing program more than 25 years ago, we became nationally recognized in science. To integrate Catholic identity into every aspect of the curriculum, Sacred Heart has since adopted the STREAM approach with science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, as well as religion. We are confident that what Sister accomplished will flourish under Caroline’s leadership. This summer we renovated our music room, freshened up paint in the building, and installed bright new lights in our gym. We also helped make the dream of a Sacred Heart Academy education a reality for nearly 40 percent of our young Excelsior Women, something that is very near and dear to my heart. None of this would have been possible without your support and I am grateful beyond words. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus continue to shower you with His unconditional love. Sr. Elizabeth Doyle, ASCJ, co-directs Campus Ministry with Blair Destito. She notes: "Music and art are important parts of Campus Ministry, particularly in the school's liturgies. And, while religion may not be written explicitly into math and science curriculums, we look for ways to inculcate a sense of wonder, and to incorporate students' science and math knowledge and talents into service."

STREAMing Education @ Sacred Heart The idea of emphasizing the subject areas of STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math has been driven by the business community to prepare a more agile, educated workforce….However, in recent years, it has been increasingly evident that our economy is truly driven by innovation and the creativity and communication nurtured through the "Arts" and that the Arts are an essential component…worthy of emphasis as well. Rooted in our faith as Catholic schools, "Religion" is woven throughout all subjects and completes the picture for a holistic approach to education. STREAM education is not a new curriculum, but a philosophical framework for delivering excellence in Catholic education for (the) 21st century. Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Buffalo

A

s is the custom at Sacred Heart, science and math teacher Pam Brownell begins every class with a prayer. "The moments we spend in prayer help to center the class," she says — "especially when the girls are anxious before an assessment." Math teacher Amanda Klenk notes that "The beauty of math is all around us in the world that God has created." And Teresa DelVecchio, who teaches visual arts, says that, in her classes, "Students are reminded of the gifts of this world." "Religious values are an important part of educating the whole person," says Sr. Elizabeth Doyle, ASCJ, co-director of Campus Ministry. And, while the terminology may be relatively new, the thinking behind STREAM — incorporating the R (Religion) along with the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and A (the Arts) into the curriculum is something that faculty members at Sacred Heart — and a number of other Catholic schools — have been doing for quite a while. Still, widespread conversations about STREAM as an education strategy are relatively recent. The STEM areas have been a focus of education philosophy for more than a decade; the term first came into common use in 2005. Conversations about adding the Arts (the A) took shape in subsequent years as educators and policy makers sought to emphasize interdisciplinary connections and ensure that students learned to develop and apply creative thinking and design skills to their STEM learning. The discussion about STREAM (adding the R) became more central to the Catholic school world in 2014. In that year, the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) introduced its STREAM initiative, held a national symposium on the topic, and articulated STREAM's core concepts. These concepts include: † integrating Catholic identity into every aspect of the curriculum; † providing a challenging learning environment focused on science, technology, math, the arts, and the

integration of education in the faith;

† promoting a culture of innovation as well as a commitment to ethical behavior; † increasing the participation of groups that are under-represented in the sciences; † increasing content literacy for all students, including those who do not pursue technology-related

careers or additional studies in the STREAM disciplines; † fostering inclusivity by serving a broad population and operating on the dual premises that math and

science competencies can be developed, and that all students need access to STREAM competencies to become full participants in 21st century education; † fostering an environment that encourages problem solving, collaboration, and independent research; † demonstrating that success can be defined in many ways.

Sr. Elizabeth's co-director of Campus Ministry, Blair Destito ’06, notes that, "In our role, we draw on the gifts of everyone in the school as we infuse our values throughout the curriculum." Sister and Blair point to examples such as the integration of Catholic medical ethics into courses taught by Sr. Mary Jane Paolella, ASCJ, ’65, an expert in

† Elizabeth Christophy, Ph.D., has been a member of the Science Department since 1999. She teaches all levels of chemistry, including AP, and moderates the Students Tinkering with Awesome Robots (S.T.A.R.) Programming Club, and our school's chapter of the Science National Honor Society. Science literacy is vital for everyone. While we have many students who go into careers where knowing chemistry is helpful — science research, medicine, and so on — even non-science careers, such as technical writing and many areas of the law, can require chemistry knowledge. And, as I point out to my students, everyone needs to know something about chemistry to function in the world today. Think about how many topics in current events involve science. If students don't know how to think logically and scientifically and do not know the basics of science, they cannot have informed opinions about issues like vaccinations, global warming, space exploration, the use of genetically modified organisms, environmental protection, and other current topics in the news.

The integration of related subject areas is vital; understanding connections among disciplines enables our students to experience a fuller picture of how the world works, and to appreciate how the knowledge they gain can influence their lives. Sr. Kathleen Mary Coonan, ASCJ, ’76, Principal

Ethical issues are, of course, a huge part of science. The other way that religious faith — the R in STREAM — informs our classes is the idea that science and religion are in no way mutually exclusive. It is perfectly possible to believe in God and be amazed at the wonders of God's creation, yet still study the details of how it all works."

Both chemistry and geometry help our students develop their problem-solving skills. By showing them that they are capable of solving complex problems, I also help them develop self-esteem. The logical approaches they learn in these classes help them meet challenges in all areas of their lives. And, as students work through these challenges, I focus not only on modeling compassion and patience, but also on teaching my students to have compassion and patience for one another. Each one learns at her own rate, and respecting each other's process helps us all become better people and better learners."

ALUMNA VOICE Tara Cocchiarella Barreira '02 Associate Director of Process Sciences at Merrimack Pharmaceuticals One of the factors that most drew me to Sacred Heart was that a biotech collaboration with Yale had just been announced. I had always loved science and came to Sacred Heart with the intention of immersing myself in the science curriculum. As soon as I was allowed to choose my own classes, I took all the science I could, including Sr. Mary Jane Paolella's biotech course, AP biology, AP chemistry, and anatomy. Because of Sacred Heart, I knew how to do DNA sequencing and work with PCR (polymerase chain reaction) before I was old enough to get my driver's license! I was incredibly well-prepared when I enrolled at Tufts University, where I majored in chemical engineering because they did not have an accredited biotech program. I now have a master's in chemical engineering as well, but my career path has been in biotech. Sr. Mary Jane is still a mentor to me. She never doubted what we as students could do and instilled confidence in us to succeed in a world dominated by men. She took us to scientific conferences and helped us feel that we belonged there. When I had to do my first professional industry talk in my 20s, I started to panic. And then I remembered what I had done in high school, thanks to Sr. Mary Jane and others.

production, we choose a service project inspired by the show's theme. For example, when we staged West Side Story in 2015, we partnered with Apostle Immigrant Services to learn more and to help with a clothing drive. For The Little Mermaid last year, we partnered with Save Our Sound to help clean up area beaches. This year, for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, with the Connecticut Department of Education, we brought in the 'Save a Life' Tour. (See more about the 'Save a Life' Tour in the Around the Academy section of this issue.) Theatre is a collaborative art form that teaches the value of collective participation. Bringing the show to the Shubert Theater allows students to heighten their theatre training by collaborating with professionals on state-of-the-art equipment. No matter what production we are working on, creating theater is a wonderful metaphor for taking a leap of faith."

As the only visual arts teacher, I have the unique experience of teaching all students in the school, and I get to know each one as a person as well as an art student. I act as a facilitator, encouraging students to challenge themselves and allowing them to choose the media and techniques they want to explore and develop. Knowing them as people gives me the opportunity to facilitate their growth and development.

While I strive to teach students how to be confident, I also teach them to help those who are struggling, to work as a team, to be compassionate to one another, and to promote social responsibility. We want our students to be able to think, create, and innovate, but we also need them to be compassionate, empathetic, and kind. Nicole Granucci I focus on each student's problem-solving process, showing her how to break down any type of complex problem and solve it creatively. Kathy has been junior class moderator, is moderator of Mu Alpha Theta — our chapter of the National Math Honor Society — and Moody Mega Math Challenge. She serves as the UConn site coordinator for ECE here at Sacred Heart. With her husband, Thomas Gniadek, M.D., she generated a computer-based grading algorithm that helps the department with proper math course placement for incoming freshmen. She has written a trigonometry e-book series titled "Fab Five for Trig" as a resource to help students learn trigonometry without memorization, and has published articles on theology in several magazines. I am experimenting constantly with new and different teaching styles and the latest research results regarding growth mindsets in the math classroom. I emphasize the idea of "grit" in all my classes, and encourage students to use this important way of thinking. I implement the latest neuroscientific research regarding learning and teaching, and, stress the value of learning from mistakes and the idea that anyone can learn anything. Math is a great discipline to teach students that it is never okay to quit just because something is difficult. Problem-solving strategies in math can be extrapolated to our lives at work, and in our families, communities, and relationships. Regarding the R in STREAM: If anything needs

ALUMNA VOICE Olivia DeFilippo '16 Obtaining a BFA in musical theater at Molloy College's Cap21 Conservatory During my time at Sacred Heart, I was a member of the Chamber Choir and served as student director my senior year. I performed in the musical in my sophomore and junior years, in Annie and Singin' in the Rain, respectively. I was a liturgical singer for First Friday masses and Holy Day celebrations. When I was a senior, I choreographed the Festival of the Arts for the Drama Club. Sacred Heart taught me how to embrace my individuality. Throughout my high school journey, I was constantly reminded that this journey is my own, encouraged to craft my own future, and to work hard with guidance from my friends and mentors. Ms. Alison Bass, in particular, inspired me in my own life to step out of my comfort zone and follow my passions. One of the most important lessons I learned was time management. I was balancing my course load with cheerleading, choir, and Drama Club, while also performing in shows and participating in a jazz choir at Fairfield Prep. Time management skills are essential now that I have to manage college classes, my jobs, rehearsals, homework, and commuting time.

"grit," it is our relationship with God. We cannot and should not expect to understand God's ways. Scripture states, "God's ways are not our ways, His thoughts are not our thoughts." So, if any of us try to make any sense out of some of what we are asked to believe — attitudes of "grit" and "keep trying" and "trust that all is well" all come into play as skills learned in struggling with math problems! And always, I pray and ask God for the grace to help me, every day, bring His face of love and mercy into every class I walk into."

Physics is an important discipline for our young women. Some will have to understand physics for careers in medicine or the sciences. For others, physics develops problem-solving skills and endurance. It is not an easy subject; it requires thinking through tough problems. But breaking down complex problems into manageable parts is a valuable skill. Physics also highlights our day-today interactions with our environment. It explains how objects fall, how our eyes and ears work, why something can’t move without a transfer of energy, and why you need something warm to make something cold. Understanding our natural world makes us better problem solvers. When I think about the R in STREAM, I reflect on the fact that part of our role as a Catholic school is to teach the whole person. While I strive to teach students how to be confident, I also teach them to help those who are struggling, to work as a team, to be compassionate to one another, and to promote social responsibility. We want our students to be able to think, create, and innovate, but we also need them to be compassionate, empathetic, and kind."

Nicole Granucci, now in her second year of teaching science, teaches physics and astronomy, and started the Astronomy Club. She is currently finishing her master's degree in applied physics (optics) at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU); her research involves developing novel methods to reduce sky background for better observations in urban areas. She notes, "Many urban communities lack public observing programs due to the light pollution, atmospheric conditions and limited access to large telescopes."

My classroom motto is, “You learn by doing." I use the analogy of learning to play piano to help students understand the importance of working through the content. The piano teacher can tell you how to play, but you don't learn until you actually touch the keys. I engage students with hands-on activities — real problems to solve and ways to make personal connections to the content. I also want my students to understand that, while learning difficult material can be challenging, if you persevere, you can learn or do anything. I involve students in as much science research and astronomical observation as possible. I work closely with the SCSU astronomer and have connections to NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) astronomers to do research.

In my classroom, we create learning communities where my students work in groups, present their

ALUMNA VOICE Kristin Morico '80, PE, BCEE, D. WRE, CSP, ENV SP Global Leader of Environmental Programs at General Electric Sacred Heart gave me excellent academic preparation for my further education, and for my career in civil engineering and my work in industry. The science program was outstanding, even as far back as when I was there in the late '70s. I especially loved chemistry. Sacred Heart also gave me experience in leadership roles such as student council president and tennis team captain — experiences that have served me well as I have been in executive positions for the last 14 years. I learned effective communications skills, how to get along with many different kinds of people, how to be approachable, and how to approach others. Those skills are important in my current position, where I deal with a lot of compliance issues and often have to respond to challenging situations. Sacred Heart has been instrumental throughout my life. When the Chernobyl disaster happened in 1978, Sr. Kierstin Martin, ASCJ, our chemistry and physics teacher, brought in an expert to talk about it. Then, when the Fukushima nuclear plant broke down in 2011, I had to fly there to coordinate emergency efforts around radiological contamination for our employees, and I remembered that lecture from 1978. And the inclusive community at Sacred Heart also remains with me. It allowed me to blossom. So many of my friends and associates are from my Sacred Heart days. We laughed a lot at school, even through some difficult times. The support I had from teachers, administrators, and classmates gave me important messages about what is possible.

work, and discuss their thoughts and points of confusion without fear of making mistakes. I focus on having the students really learn the material with strategies that work for them. At the start of each lesson, I also point out how the content is applicable to STEM fields and to everyday life. Mathematics is important because it is a universal language that can be used to learn more about how our world works, as it is used in science, business, and the arts. Mathematics can be considered a gateway to higher education; mathematics skills, especially critical thinking and reasoning aloud with group members, are important to success at the college level and beyond. The R in STREAM is a part of our classes, helping us find meaning and beauty in God's creations. Mathematics is all around us in the world that God has created. It is part of us and is something we have an intuition about."

She served as department chair for six years and, in 2014, became dean of academic affairs. While serving as dean, she continues to teach AP Biology and Gene Discovery. As a project with her honors biology class, Sibani adapted a technique called RNAi so that it can be used in a high school setting. That work has been published in The American Biology Teacher. Over the years, she has mentored students working on science projects that have garnered numerous awards and accolades.

Engaging in the arts — visual arts, drama, dance, and music — is basic to the human experience. The arts provide us with a universal language to communicate our history, our values, and, perhaps most importantly, our faith. With the study of acting and drama, for instance, the life-long natural consequences include an enhanced ability to generate ideas, to communicate those ideas to others, to focus on living in the moment, and to develop a deeper appreciation for a process-based learning experience. Students are given ample opportunities to rehearse these skills through performance-based projects and are encouraged to practice proper audience etiquette, allowing them to build their confidence as presenters. I love working with them in this capacity, as the skills they are learning have the unique ability to connect students to themselves and to one another. These are skills students will need as they confront the complex problems we face in the 21st century. Students display more self-confidence, improved concentration, and a stronger spirit of empathy when engaged in the arts.

Students tinker with awesome robots in the S.T.A.R. Programming Club, led by chemistry teacher Elizabeth Christophy, Ph.D.

I am always drawn to and amazed by the level of inquisitiveness and motivation among our students. The research projects they are choosing have evolved over the years. The unique aspect of Human Gene Discovery — an introductory course in biotechnology — is that it helps students get firsthand experience in common and important lab techniques. I am proud that we offer this as a sophomore elective, since these techniques are typically not part of a high school curriculum. Science courses in general are geared toward promoting independent thinking and logical analysis. It is our hope that students become critical thinkers so that they can rely on their prior knowledge and reasoning ability to make well-informed decisions throughout their lives, and make meaningful contributions to their families and communities. Students use the scientific method to analyze, explore, and assess the various processes in nature, and as they do so, they do so with honesty and integrity. They are living the values that serve as the foundation for religion."

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN SUPPORTS A NEW HEART FOR OUR SCHOOL

M

embers of the Sacred Heart family know our stories. In September of 1946, seventeen pioneering young women walked through the doors of 295 Greene Street in New Haven, laying the foundation for our future. A decade later, following the establishment of a new Provincialate on the Cherry Hill estate in Hamden, about a hundred students entered the new Sacred Heart Academy building for the first time. Every year, a new first-year class, welcomed at Freshman Commissioning, finds its place in the Sacred Heart community. And each major change at the school — the appointment of a new leader, the expansion of campus facilities — is another chapter in our collective life. Now, the time has come for a new chapter to be added.

We have embarked on a capital campaign, Ever Higher — The Campaign for Sacred Heart Academy — to support Phase I of the master plan approved in 2015 by the school’s board of directors and the Advisory Council. “The current building constructed in the 1950s suited the needs of the time,” says President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D.,’71. “We plan to build a space that will allow us to keep pace with the changing academic climate of the 21st century, and that will enhance the sense of community that is central to our mission.” Development of the master plan, spearheaded by Sr. Sheila soon after her installation as the school’s first president, began in 2011. It was an extensive and inclusive process, calling on the entire school community to think deeply about the future needs of the Academy. The response was enthusiastic and heartfelt. Meetings were held with students, faculty and staff, parents, alumnae, and friends of Sacred Heart — “Probably a thousand people all together,” Sr. Sheila notes — offering their insights to the architect. Two of those people are Stephen and Nancy LaPointe, parents of Kayla '18 and members of the capital campaign cabinet — a small group of people who form the leadership for the campaign. "Everyone we have spoken with," says Nancy, "feels deeply connected to the school and wants to see it move forward." Robert McMahon, father of Emma '17 and Elisabeth '16, and a member of the Advisory Council, says, "There is no doubt that the students, faculty, and staff deserve a physical plant that matches the quality of what goes on inside the building." In line with the challenges and pace of 21st century learning, the plans for Phase I call for a new school center to be constructed in front of the existing building, connecting the Philip Paolella, Jr. Recreational Center and the original main entrance. The new wing will become an educational, social, and cultural center that will also offer improved accessibility for those with physical challenges. The space will include a new student commons that will be a natural gathering spot for students before, after, and between classes, and will include a gallery to display student art work. Anyone entering the building will do so on ground level in full view of the relocated main office. "We love having visitors," Sr. Sheila says, "and we want them to feel welcome. The new configuration will be a central hub for the school while providing enhanced safety and security."

I am happy to support Sacred Heart Academy’s new building project. I am very proud to be an alumna and I feel that taking part in this project is helping to keep my legacy alive. I was blessed with three beautiful sons so I will never be able to give a daughter the privilege of attending the Academy. By being part of this project, I feel that I am helping another young woman receive the same gift that I had. Empowering young women with a strong work ethic and positive values is essential in this challenging world. MaryGrace Santagata Crisci '88, former Advisory Council member

I am an assistant principal at one of New Haven's magnet schools. I am supporting the campaign because every day that I walk into my school building as a leader in a public school, I take with me the life lessons and experiences learned at Sacred Heart. I remember the importance of having mentors like Sr. Mariette Moan, ASCJ, '77. Those positive interactions continue to inspire me to be that person for my staff and students. My experience as a peer connector at Sacred Heart also shaped who I am. I found a safe space to develop my own speaking and listening skills, and learned how to share those, and help other people see the good in themselves. Jamie Coady '94

WHY I GAVE

By participating in Ever Higher —The Campaign for Sacred Heart Academy, alumnae, parents, grandparents, and friends will ensure that the Academy continues to educate young women who will grow into adults of integrity, compassion, and intelligence. Sr. Sheila O'Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71 President President Sr. Sheila O'Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71 and Principal model of our new school center. The president's office, principal’s office, and offices for admissions and alumnae affairs will be situated near the main office. New conference rooms will provide convenient meeting space for alumnae, academic departments, the Advisory Council, and Mothers’ and Fathers’ Clubs, among other groups. The relocated offices will free up rooms for use by faculty to tutor students and confer with parents, and for student clubs to meet; such flexible meeting spaces are currently in short supply. The new student center will feature a green roof, also known as a "living roof." Both functional and attractive, a green roof reduces storm water runoff, lowers cooling costs, and is a visible manifestation of our commitment to stewardship of our Earth. "This is the right plan at the right time," says Stephen LaPointe. "As I talk with people about the capital campaign, I hear again and again how important the school has been in their lives. And I know how much Nancy and I value it as parents. Now, we all have the opportunity to help secure Sacred Heart's future." Former Advisory Council member Kathleen Nastri,

DTA has overseen projects for a wide variety of educational clients including Yale University, Taft School, and the New Haven Board of Education. I donated to the capital campaign because I truly believe in the values of Sacred Heart Academy — compassion, respect for others, accountability for one's actions, and support for social justice — that go with the excellent academic program. My granddaughter received a fine education in the sciences, her field of interest, and has returned to the Academy to thank some of her teachers for how much they taught her, and for their support and encouragement. In one of her first calls to us after she started college this fall, our younger daughter, Emma ’17, said, "I know I never told you this before, but you were right! Sacred Heart prepared me incredibly well for college. Thank you!" Both of our daughters fell in love with English and writing while at the Academy, fueled by the contagious love and enthusiasm of their teachers. And, in their senior years, each of our daughters participated in Kairos. Those retreat days had a profound impact on how they see themselves and others, and deepened their friendships with their classmates. Our daughters have skills for life, and have made friends for life. We are delighted to support Ever Higher — The Campaign for Sacred Heart Academy. Alumna Passes on the Alumnae Torch Sr. Mariette was not only a gatekeeper to the past, but also challenged alumnae to reach ever higher with new experiences.

F

or years, Sr. Mariette Moan, ASCJ, '77 was hard at work, building up the alumnae relations role at Sacred Heart from a part-time position to a full-time ministry. Sister now will be devoting her time and talents to other ministries and as she departs, we want to celebrate her fruitful tenure as director of alumnae relations. The guiding principle of Sr. Mariette’s work was strong bonds, as she instilled in our alumnae that Sacred Heart would always be a home to them, particularly in times of need. Some of her proudest accomplishments were calls to prayer and support for alumnae who found themselves stricken with disease or loss. When Lisa Martone Massaro '83 and Mary Waldman Keefe '78 were suffering from cancer, Sister made a point to be with them until the end, discussing everything from their time at Sacred Heart to deeper conversations about God and family. Sr. Mariette was not only a gatekeeper to the past, but also challenged alumnae to reach ever higher with new experiences. She facilitated volunteer opportunities for several alumnae, including Tiara Pearson '13, who has nothing but glowing praise for Sr. Mariette, whom she calls a source of inspiration. “She is the definition of an Excelsior woman, full of integrity, compassion, and hard work," explains Tiara. “When I was a student, I worked with her as a member of the Young Alumnae Association, and her passion for the Academy inspired me to stay involved. The alumnae owe her so much." Sister’s dedication and hard work are evident from the plethora of activities in which she was involved. She organized numerous class reunions, had countless meetings with alumnae to discuss how to further the mission of the school, and helped coordinate alumnae events such as the Legacy Mass, Chapel Bells, the Children’s Easter Party, and Career Day. She assisted with the golf tournament, auction, and student internships, all while managing part-time teaching duties and appointments as Councilor for the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Vicar for Religious for the Archdiocese of Hartford. Although we will miss Sr. Mariette, we joyfully welcome the return of another alumna, Caroline Dearborn Raynis '07, as she takes on this position. Caroline is well aware of the legacy she is inheriting. "Sr. Mariette is a very hard act to follow," offered President Sr. Sheila O'Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., '71 as she introduced Caroline to the faculty, "But with Sister’s blessing and support, I am happy that we have found a wonderful new director."

Many of you have asked how you can honor Sr. Mariette’s tenure as director of alumnae relations. Donations in Sister’s honor can be made to the Alumnae Association Scholarship Fund and sent to Sacred Heart. Please contact Director of Mission Advancement Debbie Camner at dcamner@sacredhearthamden.org or 203-288-2309, x318 to discuss.

After graduating from the Academy, Caroline obtained her B.A. in communications and marketing from Central Connecticut State University, and earned her M.B.A. from Southern Connecticut State University with a concentration in marketing. Prior to coming to Sacred Heart, Caroline worked for the Connecticut Department of Labor. She is very involved with her parish, St. Sebastian in Middletown, and Holy Trinity School in Wallingford. Sr. Sheila says, "Caroline comes to us filled with enthusiasm, eagerly returning to the place of so many happy memories from her time as a student. She is warm, engaging, ebullient, and in love with all things Sacred Heart." We wish Sr. Mariette the best as she continues to serve faithfully both the Apostles and the Archdiocese of Hartford, and we look forward to the ways that Caroline will advance the legacy that Sr. Mariette has left behind.

H

ow do you fill a need when you see one in your community? If you are Mary Pursell, you start a non-profit organization. “When volunteering with my daughter for her Sacred Heart community service requirement, we served dinner at local homeless shelters,” Mary remembers. “We observed that many of the beds did not have sheets, blankets, or pillows. The men were grateful to have a bed for the night, but I thought it would be nice to collect linens for the shelter, too.” A few years later, Mary turned her idea into reality. Along with friend and fellow alumna Kathy Fahy Marinaccio '82, Mary officially registered the non-profit organization, Linens of Love.

“I worked at Abbate part-time during my senior year at Sacred Heart and continued when I was in college at Southern Connecticut State University,” Mary says. “The founder, Pat Abbate, mentored me. Since it’s a small business, I was required to learn all aspects of the operation, from reception to sales to management. In 1998, I was able to purchase the agency from Pat.” Mary credits her commitment to career-building to her time at Sacred Heart, where she says she learned the discipline and confidence needed to fulfill her many responsibilities and achieve her long-term goals. Both of Mary’s daughters, Caitlin '13 and Florette '12, also attended Sacred Heart. During their high school years, Mary served on school and parish councils, and committees and boards related to her daughters’ extracurricular activities.

Mary credits her commitment to career-building to her time at Sacred Heart, where she says she learned the discipline and confidence needed to fulfill her many responsibilities and achieve her long-term goals.

Since 2015, Linens of Love has been collecting items for area homeless shelters, women’s shelters, and veterans’ organizations. Volunteers collect bedding such as comforters, quilts, pillows, and towels, as well as toiletries such as toothbrushes, shampoo, and deodorant. Linens of Love serves four organizations in the New Haven area: the New Haven Family Alliance, Emergency Shelter Management Systems, the VA’s Errera Community Care Center, and New Reach Shelters.

Mary is pleased with the progress of Linens of Love and its contributions to the community. Other organizations frequently donate items or host collection drives to benefit Linens of Love. Mary also promotes the organization by way of her regular day job as president of Abbate Insurance Agency through word of mouth, printed materials, social media, and email blasts to promote events.

“My husband, Tom, and I have always believed it’s important to be engaged with our daughters, leading by example and supporting the groups that depend on volunteerism and parent involvement to thrive,” says Mary. Even though her daughters have graduated from the Academy, Mary still maintains a presence here. This year, she will serve as a new member of the Advisory Council. “I was honored to be asked to serve on the council,” Mary says. “I truly have a love for the Sisters and for everything

the school represents. It’s critical to have an institution like Sacred Heart that empowers young women to develop strong moral values for today’s society. I am looking forward to being part of the Academy’s growth and plans for the future.” You inspire us, Mary Brunell Pursell ’82, this issue’s Excelsior Woman! STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Jiwon Jeong ’18 MAKING A HOME IN TWO WORLDS When you pass Jiwon in the hall or speak with her in class, you might not imagine the barriers she has overcome and continues to face. She is a walking testament to the fact that everyone has a story, and that even very young people are able to respond to life's challenges with tenacity and grace. Just before sixth grade, Jiwon got her student visa and came from South Korea to the U.S. to stay with her two aunts. The initial transition was difficult. "The first year I came to the States, I was very intimidated by the new environment," Jiwon remembers. "Back then, I did not speak any English, so the language barrier was the most difficult for me. The greatest challenge I face now is saying my farewells to family in Korea each year." Jiwon's father serves in the South Korean army and cannot leave the country, so the summer months are her only opportunity to be with her parents.

here offers more extracurricular activities along with the academics, as opposed to the strict Korean education system." Jiwon has certainly made the most of the extracurricular opportunities offered at Sacred Heart. She is a member of National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta — our National Math Honor Society — and participates in the Moody Mega Math Challenge. She also captains the golf team. Her involvement in school activities is all the more impressive because of the cultural and language barriers Jiwon has had to overcome. She is also the vice president of Student Council. Being elected to serve in that position demonstrates the high esteem in which she is held among her peers.

“My parents wanted me to study in the U.S. because the education system here offers more extracurricular activities along with the academics, as opposed to the strict Korean education system.” Jiwon Jeong ’18

With the escalating tension among South Korea, the U.S., and North Korea, Jiwon was unable to return home last summer. She says, "The current situation in North Korea directly affects my family because of my father. But we understand his commitment to the country, and our thinking has always been that sometimes sacrifices are inevitable for a better, bigger cause." The sacrifice of having their daughter go to school in another country was difficult for Jiwon's parents, but one they believed worth making. "My parents wanted me to study in the U.S. because the education system

Last summer, Jiwon participated in the prestigious Discovery to Cure Internship Program at Yale University, a highly selective research opportunity that admits only 12 percent of applicants. She interned in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department and performed research on reproductive immunology. Jiwon hopes to attend college in the U.S. but after that, anything is possible. She has adapted to calling two places home. "I actually think having two homes is beneficial because I always have a place to look forward to going back to, either with my parents in Korea or in the United States with my aunts." We are certain that wherever she ends up, Jiwon will do herself, her family, both her countries, and Sacred Heart Academy proud.

AROUND THE ACADEMY Meet the Class of 2021

This year’s freshman class — the Class of 2021 — is 123 young women strong. Members of the class applied from sixty towns in Connecticut and ninety feeder schools. The top five towns represented in this class are Hamden (32), Wallingford (14), New Haven (13), West Haven (12), and Branford (11). The most popular names in the freshman class are Anna, Clare/ Claire, Emma, and Mia. And, the Sacred Heart Academy legacy continues. Twenty-six class members have at least one sister who is a current student or

graduate — 32 sisters in all. Seventeen members of the class have mothers who are alumnae, and nine members have grandmothers who are alumnae. Eight freshmen have both mother and grandmother legacy relationships. “Sacred Heart legacy is again strongly represented in this class. We are always so pleased to welcome daughters of our alumnae who want to continue the legacy of excellence cultivated over our 70 years in education,” said Director of Admissions Elaine Lamboley '60.

Our new students have attended three orientation events to create a strong sense of community and to help them feel confident and comfortable in their new school. The Class of 2021 was officially inducted into the Sacred Heart community at Freshman Commissioning in September, which also welcomed parents to the commissioning service and the reception that followed. (See photos above.) Sacred Heart welcomes the Class of 2021!

“Poca favilla gran fiamma seconda” (Dante: Paradiso, I:34) “A little spark is followed by great flame.” *

Richard Marino Chair, History Department

Please enjoy this feature where, in 265 words or so, we capture a snapshot of life at the Academy with words from a faculty or staff member, a student, or an alumna.

T

his quotation from Dante’s Paradiso elucidates the mission of Sacred Heart Academy. A spark can turn into a brilliant flame if one seeks the higher good. The ethical and moral actions of students, parents, alumnae, faculty and staff, and friends of Sacred Heart Academy ignite a spark that transforms into a flame. This glow illumines all that is good with humanity. True knowledge is knowing there is a Being higher than ourselves; a knowledge that serving others is how we should live, and not a means to a selfish end. It is the knowledge that compassion for others, and having a moral compass, is the right way to conduct ourselves in every situation, with anyone, at any time. Our students seek knowledge from books, of course, but there is a knowledge that supersedes this type of understanding. The ideal knowledge Dante sought, and that Sacred Heart Academy communicates and projects, is for today’s students and for those of us associated with this institution. It requires that we come to terms with our humanity in ways that become particularly meaningful to us when we enter this beloved community. This form of knowledge exists innately in all of us, but Sacred Heart Academy draws forth the fire. From a prayer service, to a sporting event, to a live production performed by our students, to a mission trip, to a kind word or gesture to someone in the halls or in the cafeteria, our love for one other and for our God illuminates the common good in humanity. We may not know it at the time; we may not believe it now. But, as part of the Sacred Heart community, we have all had that spark ignite in us something very beautiful that we will exhibit often to others in the here and now. Just as Dante seeks the summit in Paradiso, so too with us as, enjoined together, we seek our way to Excelsior in all that we do... * (trans. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

that was joyous, meaningful, and highly spirited. We co-celebrated with Notre Dame High School, which also opened in 1946. Together, we hosted a beautiful Mass in the fall and a sock-hop in the spring. We also introduced the Greene Street Girls Luncheon for our 400-plus Greene Street Girls. Publicity, special events, and community activities focused on our 70th anniversary celebration. Thank you for making it a year to remember! As we look back on our seven decades, we also look onward and upward. We have embarked on a capital campaign, Ever Higher — The Campaign for Sacred Heart Academy, which will allow us to build a space to keep pace with the changing academic climate of the 21st century. We hope you will enjoy the introduction to the campaign featured in this issue. We are grateful to those who have helped with the planning and design for this beautiful new space and appreciative of those who have given leadership gifts. We are also thankful to each of you — our alumnae, parents, grandparents, students, faculty and staff, and friends — who have helped us to surpass the one million dollar fundraising mark this year. Thank you also to those who gave time and talent to special events, and to those who donated to the Annual Fund, and to our ever-growing #GivingTuesday. We appreciate, too, those who supported Hands Up for Heart during our Auction in April, and those who donated to our Endowment Fund, both of which offer young women in need of financial assistance the opportunity to attend the Academy. As we look to the future, we always remember our past and the vision of Sr. Antonine — to provide a premier college preparatory education for young women who would go on to become the next generation of leaders. Thank you for keeping Sr. Antonine’s vision alive. Gratefully in His Heart,

Debbie Camner Director of Mission Advancement

The memories, experiences, and formative lessons I learned at Sacred Heart impel me to give back by supporting the Annual Fund. SHA also had a positive impact on my daughters by maintaining high academic standards, as well as teaching them the importance of being good human beings. I am motivated to support the Annual Fund so the mission can extend to others in need of financial assistance. The strong bonds formed at S-H-A shall ne’er in life be broken. With a focus on faith formation, and helping young women achieve academic excellence, Sacred Heart Academy is a place where they discover their true sense of self. Whether in a classroom, on an athletic field, or as a member of a club or activity, students at Sacred Heart are provided with the opportunity to grow spiritually, academically, and socially, so they become the best version of themselves. My husband and I are proud every day to say that our daughters are members of the strong Sacred Heart Academy tradition. Lori Schommer, P’16, ’18, ’20

Join Our Christmas Stocking Challenge! Do you remember the ice bucket challenge? In the spirit of the season, the Alumnae Office is sponsoring its very own challenge — a Christmas stocking challenge — so that alumnae near and far can continue to participate in a longstanding Sacred Heart tradition. Create your own stocking (or several!) and/or get your community, your employer, or your friends to create one (or several!) to donate to your charity or charities of choice. But, before making that donation: Take a picture with your stocking(s) and send to craynis@ sacredhearthamden.org or post on the Sacred Heart Alumnae Facebook page. Nominating others is strongly encouraged — and challenge fellow alumnae! Let’s see how many stockings we collectively can create and donate to worthy causes, and make sure to follow the challenge on Facebook.
