From the President Dear Friends,

What an exciting fall! We are well into the new school year with more than 500 students filled with excitement and enthusiasm. Adding to the excitement…Sr. Maureen Flynn, ASCJ, ’81, our two faculty members Kim Cramer Curbow ’81 and Blair Destito ’06, and I had the privilege of attending the Papal Mass at Madison Square Garden. The experience was life-changing. Pope Francis has such a beautiful, humble spirit that challenges all of us to be more attentive to the call of the Gospel. He has truly left his mark on the hearts of people throughout the world. This issue of HEART is filled with amazing stories about alumnae who as Excelsior women live the values of Sacred Heart Academy each day. In our pursuit of excellence in all areas, we continually upgrade our facility and our programs. Our new marks include The John G. Martin Biological Sciences Laboratory, live streaming equipment, Office 365 for all student and faculty computers, and onCampus—a learning management system. We have also enhanced our athletic program with the addition of an ice hockey co-op team and upgrades to our track program, including new pole vaulting and high jump areas. Founded on the educational philosophy of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to educate the mind, body, and spirit, the Academy remains vibrant, academically challenging, and a place where our students are cared for each day in a spirit of love and compassion. None of this would be possible without your support. Through our Endowment, supporting students in need of financial assistance, and our Annual Fund, enhancing our student and faculty enrichment programs, the Academy is able to sustain our place as a premier Catholic college preparatory school for young women in Connecticut. On behalf of our students, thank you for all you have done to support our mission. Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure are critical to our success. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus bless you and your families abundantly in gratitude for all that you are to Sacred Heart Academy! Gratefully in the Heart of Christ,

The Sacred Heart Academy Guidance Department were on display in the guidance office. We took these down, making room on the walls for flags representing each of the colleges to which the students have been accepted so that every student feels that she has a place of importance, regardless of her academic ranking.” This cornucopia of colored flags celebrating each student is a fitting symbol of the Guidance Department’s overall philosophy. “The philosophy of the department mirrors the mission of the school—to educate the whole person,” offers Kerry. “To address both academic and personal concerns, we reach out to all of our students, not just those in the midst of the college application process.”

During his September address to a joint session of Congress, Pope Francis called attention to the difficulties faced by our country’s youth. He reached out to “those young people who are working to realize their great and noble aspirations,” to those who face great uncertainty regarding their future, especially in light of a tumultuous political and economic climate. Sacred Heart Academy, committed to the formation of the whole person, is profoundly aware of its responsibility toward young women—to educate the mind and the soul, as well as the head and the heart, so as to send inspired, faithful women into the world. At the forefront of this mission is the Guidance Department and its tireless advocacy on behalf of the student body.

Another keystone of Kerry’s tenure has been helping students apply to colleges that are more diverse and outside of the mainstream. While students are often enamored by the Ivy Leagues and other brand name schools, the Guidance Department strives to educate students that there are thousands of colleges in the United States, including many hidden gems that may offer the best academic, financial, and social fit for a student. In order to facilitate this, the department has implemented several new events, including Sophomore College Night, Junior College Night, Financial Aid Night, the College Funding Strategy Evening, and the Sacred Heart/Notre Dame College Fair. The department also hosts over a hundred colleges throughout the year so

Although tucked away in the lower level of the school, in many ways the Guidance Department is the heart of the Academy. It is there that our students are exposed to information about colleges and universities that will help them discern their future careers. Entering her seventh year as director of guidance, Kerry Alexander has overseen numerous changes and additions that have helped give our department its outstanding reputation. Each student is made to understand the value of her accomplishments. “When I started, only pictures of the Student Spotlight series from the New Haven Register

that interested students may meet with representatives of schools that they may have never considered before and offers on-site decision day with several colleges, including King’s College, St. John’s University, Southern Connecticut State University, Albertus Magnus, and Iona College. This branching out has been met with great success—last year alone our students were awarded 25 million dollars in scholarships and grants from hundreds of colleges and universities recognizing the great potential of our young women. The Guidance Department has also implemented Naviance, a web-based college admissions program, to educate students about the college application process and help them pinpoint areas where improvement may be needed. A 22-year veteran of the department, guidance counselor Patrick McAllister has utilized Naviance to provide detailed and personalized information to upperclassmen beginning the process. Due in large part to his meticulous recording of student grade point averages, test scores,

and college acceptances, Patrick created a database, which was then imported into Naviance, to provide students with personalized information so they make educated decisions about the colleges to which they apply. Students log in and compare their own grades and test scores with recent graduates who were accepted to a particular college. This enables them to objectively assess where they stand and where they may need improvement in order to increase their chance of admission. Patrick’s dedication to providing each student with detailed and personalized data is a testament to the department’s success with the college application process. Academics are not the sole focus—the core values of Catholic community and compassion are instilled in the Guidance Department with its commitment to the emotional and spiritual growth of the students it serves. With the appointment six years ago of longtime theology teacher Jeanne Lawlor Mazzariello ’78 as pastoral counselor, students have the truly

unique opportunity to experience a marriage of counseling and spirituality. “My role as pastoral counselor is to provide pastoral attentiveness and support to students in need, and to offer a compassionate and trusting environment,” explains Jeanne. “Many students are able to find comfort by drawing strength from their faith concerning matters of grief and loss, relationship conflicts, family challenges, or struggles with their own sense of self. Sacred Heart’s vibrant community is grounded in a love of the Sacred Heart. That love is the strength and guiding force in all that we do and brings to life our Catholic identity.” Jeanne is grateful for the opportunity to minister to students in this capacity. “To me, one of the most important aspects of my personal ministry, and the ministry of the school community, is the devotion to the development of the whole person. I am able to reach out to young women who, by virtue of their age and developmental stage, are open to probe and ponder life’s most profound questions.”

In order to further meet the school’s counseling needs, this year the Guidance Department has appointed a full-time guidance/ social worker, Samantha Church, who will also assume guidance responsibilities for some of the freshmen.

The core values of Catholic community and compassion are instilled in the Guidance Department with its commitment to the emotional and spiritual growth of the students it serves.

ı 9 ı

Rounding out the department is Cheryl Celentano, the administrative assistant, who ensures that the office is a well-oiled machine, scheduling meetings, updating records, and assisting in the numerous presentations given throughout the year. But beyond her professional responsibilities, her kind and patient demeanor reflect the office’s inviting spirit. In many ways she is the face of Guidance— the first person a student, teacher, parent, or college representative encounters, always making visitors feel welcome and important. With its emphasis on forming Excelsior women, Sacred Heart Academy’s mission is realized by its Guidance Department, through which our young women go forth. And while their paths may lead far, it is certain that they have been well sent.

Innovative Women Innovators are defined as people who develop exciting new ideas, products, or ways of doing things. They are at the forefront of their fields, carving out unique paths to success and staying one step ahead of everyone else. To call a person an innovator is to acknowledge her desire to create, a desire that is motivated by strong passion. Innovators are determined to improve the lives of people around them. The three alumnae highlighted here are innovators in the truest sense of the word. They are women who desire to offer something to others, providing services in the community in ways that reflect their individual passions.

As a young girl, Marjorie Bussmann Gillis, Ed.D., ’69 loved to play school with her younger sister. What began as a childhood game turned into a passion during Marjorie’s years in graduate school at UCONN while studying cutting edge research about how children learn to read. “I’ve always been fascinated by the process, from a theoretical perspective, of learning to read,” says Marjorie. “I wanted to learn more about the theory and how I could apply it. I left grad school thinking that I had a lot to learn.” Marjorie went on to teach in school systems as well as run a private practice offering oneon-one assistance to struggling readers, but ultimately wanted to make an even bigger impact. She knew that meant educating teachers on the best practices for literacy instruction. After receiving her Ed.D., Marjorie took a position with Haskins Laboratories in New Haven, promoting research on language through an early literacy initiative. Her work with Haskins inspired Marjorie to

found, in 2009, Literacy How, an organization devoted to helping teachers apply the science of learning to read. The organization trains mentors to go out into schools and provide hands-on education for teachers struggling to close the achievement gap among their students. Recently, Literacy How partnered with Independence Mission Schools in Philadelphia to provide training within two of their 15 Catholic schools. “It was really nice for me to be able to work with these schools, particularly because I see a lot of Catholic schools struggling in terms of funding,” Marjorie relates. “I’m a practicing Catholic and I believe in the mission of Catholic schools, so this partnership was important to me.” Through Literacy How, Marjorie works closely with minority group leaders, the Connecticut Commission on Children, and the Connecticut State Department of Education to pass important legislation regarding early literacy. Most recently, she partnered with Fairfield University to implement an advanced year-long program, the Anne E.

Fowler Literacy Fellowship, designed to help elementary school teachers become leaders in the classroom around literacy instruction. The program began its first year this fall and has provided 10 teachers the opportunity to contribute toward the improvement of literacy levels in Connecticut elementary schools. “We hope that we can eventually bring the model to some of the other 28 Jesuit universities across the country. It’s a great model and that’s my vision for the future,” Marjorie states. Marjorie Bussmann Gillis, Ed.D., ’69

What began as a childhood game turned into a passion during Marjorie’s years in graduate school at UCONN while studying cutting edge research about how children learn to read.

For Maria Asis-Gilbride, M.D., ’81, choosing to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology in medical school was a simple decision. Her father was an OB/GYN who loved both the practice of medicine and his patients. “My father’s enthusiasm was contagious,” says Maria. “As a young person, I saw the connection he had with his patients and the long-term relationships he developed.” Maria joined her father’s practice in 1993 and quickly developed an interest in reproductive medicine and infertility, fascinated by the ways in which female hormones change throughout a woman’s life and continually impact her health. Eventually, Maria began digging deeper into menopausal issues, becoming a member of the North American Menopause Society and reviewing research for the medical journal Menopause. “Menopause is a challenging time for women but it’s also a good turning point for them, where they recognize that their bodies are changing,” she offers. “It’s a chance to discuss implementing lifestyle changes and good health practices for the rest of their lives. It allows me to educate and help women live as long and fully as they can.” Embracing her father’s dedication to integrating new technologies into the practice of medicine, Maria has also developed an expertise in robotic surgery, an advancement of laparoscopic surgery. Robotic surgery allows physicians to utilize remotely controlled instruments to perform surgical procedures, through incisions often as small as one inch.

ı 12 ı

Many of these procedures could previously be done only with large incisions which take longer to heal and carry more risk for complications. Today, Maria works for Generations OB/GYN, a merger of her father’s original practice and Obstetrics and Gynecology of North Haven. Generations is one of the area’s first practices to offer the da Vinci System of robotic surgery. In addition, several of her partners have dedicated themselves to urogynecologic procedures, making Maria and her colleagues at Generations community pioneers in the field of women’s gynecological healthcare. Although innovation is very important to Maria, she still values tradition. “I have maintained relationships with families that were part of my father’s practice for 60 years. I’m delivering the grandchildren of some of his original patients. That is uniquely satisfying.” There were many times during her high school years when Kristy Latella ’14 sat with her peers and casually mentioned her potbelly pig, Penelope. Students leaned in closer, wide-eyed and incredulous that not only did she own a pig, but that it was a trained therapy animal. Before long, she had a captive audience as she explained her family’s commitment to raising and caring for therapeutic animals. In addition to Penelope, her family’s catalogue of animals includes a parrot, several dogs and horses, and a miniature pony, all housed on their horse farm in North Guilford. There, Kristy and her family teach therapeutic horseback riding to people with behavioral, learning, and mental disabilities. As a young girl, Kristy started by taking therapy dogs into nursing homes and hospitals. This small act of charity later grew into an enormous commitment for her. “I started volunteering at High Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center in Lyme, Connecticut, in middle school. Since then I have spent years training horses and I have logged over 600 hours helping riders.” She feels the worth of her hard work when she sees the impact the riding programs

Of Generosity Class of 1970 Scholarship Fund There are not many schools in Connecticut whose students are regularly exposed to words like charism, social justice, and legacy. But they are staple concepts infused into the culture of our school and the character of our graduates. In September, Sr. Virginia Herbers ASCJ met with each theology class, freshmen through seniors, to speak about the Apostle charism of the Academy. During these sessions she asked the students to describe their understanding of the meaning of Excelsior, the school’s motto. While everyone was able to identify its definition — ever higher — Sr. Virginia asked each student to reflect on what that meant for them.

Kristy’s therapy pig, Penelope, shows affection to a nursing home patient.

“I am so fortunate that I am able to incorporate my love of animals with the sense of fulfillment I feel when working with the disabled.” Kristy Latella ’14

have on the disabled. “The rider who has shown the most improvement is a blind woman I consider to be one of my closest friends,” says Kristy. “We have worked together in weekly lessons for many years and I help teach her advanced riding skills. She recently came in second in a real horse show.” Involvement with the disabled is not merely an interest or even a career for Kristy—it is part of her identity. “Being involved with the disabled wasn’t a choice for me, but a natural part of my life. I am so fortunate that I am able to incorporate my love of animals with the sense of fulfillment I feel when working with the disabled,” she offers.

Despite the diverse responses, each student understood that an Excelsior woman is called to leave her mark. Whether it is a mark of integrity, compassion, or mercy, she must imprint it everywhere she goes, staying faithful to the Apostle charism. This understanding permeates the school and is apparent everywhere from sophomore service projects to the gift the senior class makes to the school on graduation. The concept of leaving your mark is embraced by the alumnae community and is exemplified by the Class of 1970. After celebrating their 30th reunion, 10 members of the class formed a scholarship committee whose goal was to become the first class to establish a scholarship fund. Comprised of Valerie Crocco Canalori, Maura Wilson Coppola, Dolores DeFonzo Ennico, Elizabeth McNulty Kuhn, Mary Ann Walsh Lewis, Nancy Clare Murphy, Agnes Squeglia Rutushni, Cynthia Savo, Diane Meskill Stewart, and Anne Harmon Sweeney, the committee was determined to provide others with the same opportunity they experienced at Sacred Heart, an experience that was fundamental to their own spiritual growth and success. “We are grateful for the solid preparation Sacred Heart gave us for college and for life,” a class member explained. “At our 30th reunion we realized that tuition had increased from the $300/year our parents paid in 1970 to nearly $7,000/year in 2000. This is what inspired us to present a scholarship each year to a young woman who otherwise would not be able to attend Sacred Heart. We wanted to leave a legacy that says we know we are our sisters’ keepers.” This legacy began in 2005 when the scholarship was first awarded. Since then, the mark of generosity of the Class of 1970 has enabled 10 young women to receive a Sacred Heart education and to leave their own mark.

good friends, something that made a lasting impression.” After their graduation, Flavia moved in with relatives in Canada and the friends lost touch. But their distance didn’t stifle Flavia’s fond memories of Nancy. “I often thought about her, wondering how she was doing. I kept thinking, ‘Where is she?’ ” The impact of Nancy’s kindness and friendship on Flavia’s life remained strong despite the passing years. Flavia explained that when she had a daughter, it was only natural for her to name her Nancy after her beloved friend. The Spark of ’75!

The strong bonds formed at S-H-A shall ne’er in life be broken. This line from the Alma Mater reflects a spirit which permeates the entire Sacred Heart community and endures well beyond graduation. Each May, graduates are sent out into the world valuing the relationships formed during their time here. Although life takes each graduate down a different path, our alumnae prove that the “strong bonds” formed at the Academy are bonds built to withstand time, distance, and even hardship. Meeting in Spanish class on the first day of freshman year, Mary Kay Pursell Dupont ’75 and Jacqueline D’Andrea Heins ’75 became fast friends. “On the very first day of class, Jackie walked in and heard my loud voice cracking a joke. Right then and there she decided she needed to sit next to me,” Mary Kay explained. “We became instant friends.” Their friendship spanned four years at the Academy and continued after graduation. But when Mary Kay moved to Massachusetts, they began to lose touch. Although they only heard from each other a few times a year, Mary Kay

noted that “it was as if we never skipped a beat when we did reconnect.” Last April, Mary Kay and Jackie planned to reunite but had to cancel their plans due to Jackie’s health issues. This did not keep the friends apart; instead it strengthened their friendship. According to Mary Kay, “One of the first things Jackie said to me when we reconnected was… The strong bonds formed at S-H-A shall ne’er in life be broken.” Since then, Mary Kay is “trying to show her love and support and be as good a friend as possible.” While Mary Kay and Jackie have remained in contact throughout the years, sometimes Sacred Heart alumnae reconnect long after they’ve passed through the halls of the Academy. Such was the case with Flavia Clauser Murphy ’60 and Nancy Nuzzolillo ’60, who recently saw one another for the first time 55 years after graduation. Entering Sacred Heart in 1957 shortly after arriving to the United States from Italy, Flavia was a shy girl who didn’t speak English well. However, she remembers that despite her shyness, Nancy, whom she described as ‘very kind and very sweet,’ befriended me and became one of my

ı 14 ı

One day last year, Flavia began to search the internet in the hope of finding her long lost friend. Flavia happened upon an article from Sacred Heart that was looking for lost alumnae. Upon seeing this, she immediately emailed Alumnae Director Sr. Mariette Moan, ASCJ, ’77 to find out if she knew where Nancy might be. “Sister said she knew where Nancy was; she took my contact information and told me that Nancy would be in touch with me.” It was almost a year before Flavia got the anticipated call from her old friend. “We had this long talk. It was just like being girls again.” After that conversation they decided to meet in person, and last summer they saw each other for the first time in 55 years. When they met at Flavia’s home outside of Toronto, Canada, they discussed where life had taken them after graduating from Sacred Heart. But after sharing their journeys, Flavia found that they were the same girls who had graduated from the Academy back in 1960. “We’re older now,” she said, “but you know what, deep down, we don’t change. We just have a lot more experience.” Since then, Flavia and Nancy have made an effort to stay in touch through occasional phone calls and email exchanges. Flavia emphasized the role kindness played in the formation of her bond with Nancy, saying, “If you’re kind in the way Nancy was to me, you’ll have good memories and no regrets.” Regardless of time and distance, an enduring connection exists between Sacred Heart Academy graduates, a bond which weathers any hardship and circumstance with the same strength as when they walked the halls of the Academy as students.

EXCELSIOR LIVES Michelle Natalino Bonavena ’00

A

s an adolescent, Michelle Natalino Bonavena ’00 dedicated her life to the performing arts. She danced competitively throughout the east coast, performed on televised talent shows, sang in the school choir, and held lead roles in Sacred Heart productions. Later, while at Mercy College in New York, she worked as a dance instructor and choreographer, gaining invaluable knowledge about the music industry. With those credentials, Michelle surely could have pursued a successful career as a performer. But after college she chose to direct all of her skills toward founding Performing Art Studio BE in North Haven, a multifaceted conservatory where students are trained in a variety of artistic disciplines including dance, voice, drama, and recording arts. “I realized that my passion for creating was deeper than my passion for performing,” says Michelle. “I came up with the idea for the name Studio BE because it is limitless. The word ‘be’ is one of the smallest words but it has the biggest meaning.”

instruction. She encourages her students to work their hardest and connect with their artistic expression on an emotional level, noting the deeply therapeutic nature of the performing arts. Above all, she values her relationship with God, never forgetting that both her faith and her talent are powerful gifts. “I want the absolute best for myself, for my students, and for my own daughter, but what I’ve learned is that there is no ‘best’ without God and without love,” she offers. “I feel that God has given me a talent that never fails me and is always there when I call on that talent.” Recently, Michelle returned to the Academy to hold a dance benefit to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. While here, she realized that she had previously taken the comfort of her time at Sacred Heart for granted. Walking the halls, she instantly remembered the feeling of being surrounded by laughter and camaraderie and the sense of empowerment gained from the Scriptural quotes inscribed around the school.

At the studio, Michelle teaches her students how to be successful performers and how to embrace their talents and unique qualities. She works hard to instill strong personal and professional values, celebrating the moments when she sees students turning into what she calls “compassionate, honest, and responsible young individuals.” Michelle also has a great relationship with Sacred Heart students, having taught many of them over the years.

“Whether I had pursued a career in medicine, engineering, or the arts, the confidence and acceptance that Sacred Heart instilled prepared me for any journey,” says Michelle. “After the most recent benefit event, I immediately telephoned my mother to thank her for the sacrifices she made in order to send me to Sacred Heart. It was such an opportunity.”

The Sacred Heart Academy Admissions Office Elaine Lamboley ’60 In recent years, all Connecticut preparatory schools have been faced with a shrinking pool of applicants due to the population of students approaching high school age coupled with the economic climate in our state. Many schools also realized declining enrollment. Through more personalized recruitment approaches and an increased emphasis on Sacred Heart’s innovative curriculum, we have not only maintained our enrollment, but even found a steady increase for many years in the quality of both the applicant pool and the enrolled freshman class.

Incoming students take note of our “hidden curriculum” found in leadership opportunities offered in every facet of school life. They are led to realize that an all-girls’ education at the secondary level gives young women the competitive edge they need to succeed in college and in their careers without sacrificing a happy and well-rounded social life. Sacred Heart offers a sense of place where distractions that can interfere with academic development are removed, where students are free to be themselves in a relaxed learning environment and to participate fully

in the high school experience. As a Catholic preparatory school for young women, we provide a highly positive example of a feminine faith community that worships together and serves others outside the school. Our students see themselves as worthy and competent persons and visitors to the school comment on the dignity and discipline our students exhibit and the support they offer to each other. Students seek Sacred Heart because it’s the right fit for them academically, spiritually, and socially. They want Sacred Heart because of its strong academics steeped in values, and because the school has an exceptional college acceptance record. They sense that students are happy here. They see them focused on learning and curious to learn new things. They know that, as students, they will be supported here by inspiring and effective teachers who will challenge them and help them meet with success. Prospective students and families who visit Sacred Heart see nurturing through spiritual leadership and association with women and girls with a sense of purpose.

Why I Chose Sacred Heart Academy for my Daughters

All prospective parents are concerned about safety and the position of values in schools, and find comfort and confidence in Sacred Heart’s dual commitment to intelligence and values. In admissions, we are faced with the consumer power of students as they search for the “perfect” high school. Today’s high school applicants are educated consumers. Instead of simple concern about whether they will be happy and get along with classmates, they want to know about the advantages of the total Sacred Heart experience: academic, spiritual, athletic, and social. Applicants often ask probing questions: “Which classes would look better on my transcript?”—“Will I discover my best abilities at Sacred Heart?”—“Do you think the combined academic, leadership, and athletic offerings will assure me acceptance at a top university?”

Mary Lyons Samson ’81 I send both my daughters, Ann ’17 and Cara ’19, to Sacred Heart Academy for several reasons. I know the school provides a strong academic foundation which will help them succeed in life, but I also believe Sacred Heart provides a strong moral foundation, which my husband Dave and I feel is extremely important. Although the teaching of morals starts at home, Sacred Heart students further develop and strengthen their moral compasses. They learn right from wrong, as well as the significance of caring for and helping others. This helps guide them through difficult situations, and we believe it makes them better, happier people.

Fortunately, the administration of Sacred Heart Academy through the years recognized that An all-girls’ education at the students need secondary level gives young different types of support today. women the competitive edge they need to succeed in college Orientation and transition and in their careers without programs and a sacrificing a happy and wellstrong emphasis on student rounded social life. advisement help them to answer such questions. With four professional counselors in our Guidance Department today–two guidance counselors, one pastoral counselor, and one guidance/social worker–our students are prepared to handle life at Sacred Heart now and life after Sacred Heart in the future.

When I attended Sacred Heart Academy many years ago, I made wonderful friends who shared many of the same values. To this day they remain my closest friends. We actually still get together on the first Friday of every month to do fun things and catch up with one another. They aren’t kidding when they talk about the strong bonds formed at S-H-A. It’s true! I send my daughters to Sacred Heart because I want them to have the same wonderful experience I did.

eagerly anticipate joining this vibrant community where students accept challenges and respect the goodness and difference in others. They find a feeling of belonging at Sacred Heart. Some schools have become more aggressive recently in recruiting eighth graders. And many prestigious schools saw an increase in applications this past year. But Sacred Heart’s yield of enrolled students is impressive. We can maintain the current trend. How do we sustain this success? It seems we may have already found the answer.

T

he only experience most five-year-olds have with horseback riding is slinging their little legs over a wooden rocking horse. But after exposure to horses at a nearby stable and a few pony rides, Gabriella Greco ’16 wanted the real thing. “I just told my mom that I wanted to ride horses and she said OK,” Gabi recalls. “We had no idea that it would come to this.”

Riding can be demanding on both her time and body. “In order to practice I have to go all the way to Greenwich, which is over an hour both ways, and I ride anywhere from two to four hours a day, Tuesday through Sunday.” And that’s only for practice—when Gabi has horse shows, she spends even more time riding to prepare for the competition.

Eleven years and several competitions later, Gabi is a seasoned rider who trains with Peter Leone, an Olympic silver medalist, at Lionshare Farm in Greenwich. She has traveled the east coast with her two horses, Brecourt and Ravel D’Anne Croix, as well as a leased horse named Styling, to compete in an event called the Low Junior Jumpers. In this event riders complete a series of four foot, three inch jumps while under the clock and are scored based on how many rails are knocked over, whether or not the horse refuses to jump, and the amount of time over the limit. “If you fall off, you’re disqualified,” says Gabi, a penalty she is all too familiar with.

The very real risk of injury and intense time commitment are more than worth it for Gabi, who finds great value not just in the competition but also in the strong relationships she develops with her horses. “I will eventually need to sell my horses to buy new ones that can jump higher so I can compete at more advanced levels. It will be difficult since I have an emotional bond with them. My horses and I are a team, and when you learn to trust them they in turn trust you. I love them and when I sell them I will make sure they’re in very good homes and that their new owners will take good care of them.”

Mandarin Chinese — Our Newest World Language

Ice Hockey — 14th Varsity Sport Sacred Heart has joined West Haven High School in forming a co-op ice hockey team within the SHA ICE HOCKEY Southern Connecticut Conference Girls Hockey League. Teams form cooperatives when there are not enough student-athletes to form an individual school team. Approximately 10 student-athletes from each school will participate in our newest varsity sport.

Xiuying Tan helps a student brush up on her calligraphy.

Mandarin Chinese I, introduced during the 2014-15 academic year, serves as an introduction to the study of the Chinese language, history, and culture while building a solid foundation in the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students acquire basic conversation skills as they learn the pinyin system and learn to write Chinese characters with a Chinese brush. This year we added Mandarin Chinese II, which will build on the skills learned in Mandarin I with an emphasis on more complex grammar and sentence patterns. Students will make phone calls and appointments, familiarize themselves with job interview questions and transportation, and study Chinese business culture.

The team will be coached by Erin Blake, a three sport stand-out at WHHS in soccer, ice hockey, and softball. A 2010 graduate of Albertus Magnus College, Erin played varsity soccer there for four years. After earning a master’s degree in education at Southern Connecticut State University, she accepted a fifth grade teaching position at Carrigan Intermediate School in West Haven. The Sacred Heart Academy/West Haven Co-op Team will play a 20-game schedule. Practices began in November at Bennett Rink in West Haven which serves as the home rink and team members are currently working on uniform design. Other teams competing in the league include Branford, Daniel Hand, East Catholic, Guilford, Hall/Conard Co-op, Hamden, Lauralton Hall, Notre Dame of Fairfield, and Simsbury. “I would like to express my appreciation to all those involved in this collaboration—West Haven Athletic Director Jon Capone, West Haven Superintendent of Schools Neil Cavallaro, the West Haven Board of Education, as well as our President Sr. Sheila and Principal Sr. Maureen,” shared Athletic Director George Bedocs.

These courses are taught by Xiuying Tan who was born and lived for 25 years in China where she received a B.A. in English. She then worked as an English-Chinese translator for an export company and in 2007, moved to Connecticut. In December 2014, she earned a B.S. in accounting from Southern Connecticut State University. While pursuing this degree, she began teaching Chinese at Southeastern Connecticut Chinese School and found that teaching is her real passion. She now plans to earn a third degree—this time in education!

The Sacred Heart Athletic Program offers a choice of 27 teams competing in 14 varsity and junior varsity sports, with freshman teams in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Over the years, Sacred Heart teams have qualified for All-Conference, AllState, and All-American selections. Over 60% of our students compete in interscholastic sports.

Track and Field Program Perfected Sacred Heart has added a high jump and pole vaulting area, as well as done repairs to the existing running track. “The addition of the high jump and pole vault puts the finishing touches on our track program,” according to Athletic Director George Bedocs.

Our Charism Connection student team works hard each year to spread the virtues, spirit, and charism of the foundress of the Apostles, Mother Clelia Merloni. This year they join other Apostle schools in a new tradition…the “Together We CAN Make a Difference” campaign, which asks students and faculty to donate cans of food at First Friday liturgies throughout the school year. At Sacred Heart we have chosen to donate the canned goods to Connecticut Food Bank where Mary Kate Carofano ’97 serves as chief development officer. Our community, spearheaded by the Charism Connection team, is proving that the slogan “Together We CAN Make a Difference!” certainly rings true here at the Academy.

Making Strides in Genetics for Twenty Years

Juniors and seniors in Honors Biotechnology Research have been sequencing genes and publishing research for many years using the school’s ABI Prism 310 Genetic Analyzer, a single capillary automated sequencer. So, what was different about last year?

to determine if these genes were influenced by epigenetics. They discovered that both genes have CpG islands, areas where two base pairs of DNA, cytosine and guanine, are situated next to each other in high percentages. The goal was to target these areas.

Throughout the 2014 -15 academic year students used bioinformatics tools—internet databases and resources—to acquire background information for hands-on experimentation. These tools, namely the University of California at Santa Clara (UCSC) Genome Browser, European database Ensembl, and information from the National Center for Biotechnology (NCBI), were used for data analysis.

After a year of work, the students successfully extracted DNA from calf tissue, designed their own short, complementary DNA primers, amplified the target areas by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and sequenced these areas of their gene of interest. They completed the final process by preparing a scientific poster and presenting it at the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) Annual Symposium in Washington, DC this summer, and submitting their results to GenBank, once again, for publication. This marked the twentieth year that Honors Biotechnology Research students both presented to the scientific community and published sequences in GenBank.

Students were interested not only in molecular genetics—the study of genes and their inheritance—but also in epigenetics—the process which turns genes on and off. In addition to studying the function or dysfunction of genes, they were also interested in learning why some genes are turned on or off. The students chose two genes of interest: Bovine (cow) Alpha-synuclein (SNCA) and Fatty Acid Synthasse (FASN), and used bioinformatics

Over the years, our Science Department, particularly this program founded by Sr. Mary Jane Paolella, ASCJ, ’65, has received attention from national and local news media as a testament to the important work being done.

Grandparents’ Day 2015 October 20 marked the seventh annual Grandparents’ Day, sponsored by the Office of Mission Advancement. Sophomores invited their grandparents to campus for the morning and together they enjoyed breakfast, songs from the upcoming musical, West Side Story, presentations by Sr. Sheila and grandfather of Kailby ’16 and Klara ’18 Schommer, Bill Robinson, using the students’ Lenovo tablets, a prayer service in the Mount Sacred Heart Chapel, and tours. Nearly one hundred grandparents joined us for this special day. The sophomores and their grandparents particularly enjoyed their time in chapel. It was especially meaningful as each part of the service honored the “strong bonds” between granddaughters and grandparents. Georgia Rossetti ’18 and her grandmother Annette Rogers. ı 26 ı

Technology and Innovation Continues Across the Curriculum allowing faculty, staff, and students the ability to access their documents and email on any device wherever they are. Additionally, Office 365 will give students and faculty the opportunity to work collaboratively on the same document simultaneously, regardless of location. Email and data servers will not run out of storage or be susceptible to server crashes or power and internet outages. Transitioning to Blackbaud onCampus Learning Management System. Parents, students, and faculty and staff will be able to easily share information about assignments and activities and all aspects of campus life, from academics to athletics, clubs and more, in one place on the school’s website via a live stream.

For more than a decade, Sacred Heart Academy has been on the cutting edge of instructional technology. First in the area to implement a one-to-one laptop program in 2009, the school’s technology department continues to move forward so as to prepare students for their next steps in the “real world.” In keeping with the philosophy of incorporating the best technology developments in order to provide the best learning experience for our students, the Office of Technology implemented the following initiatives for the 2015 -16 academic school year: Installing a Discover Video Digital Media/ Video Distribution System. This multipurpose

system solution will deliver live and stored educational media, enhance curriculum delivery, accelerate professional development, and expand connections to the community. Additionally, this system will improve communication between students, faculty, and parents resulting in enhanced security. This was made possible through a 65,000 dollar grant from the State of Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority; Public, Educational and Governmental Programming and Education Technology Investment Account (PEGPETIA). Transitioning to Microsoft Office 365. This will provide file storage in the cloud

Mu Alpha Theta Inducts New Members

While maintaining methods that have traditionally characterized teaching and learning, Sacred Heart has never failed to embrace innovative methods—especially when it comes to the latest in technology. “Our goal is for our students to employ technology tools to develop as self-directed life-long learners,” offered Director of Technology Kathryn Cioffi. With an emphasis on creating technology and not simply consuming it via initiatives across the curriculum, including the utilization of laptops, tablets, interactive classrooms, blended learning, together with a host of other inventive software programs, the 21st century is alive and well in classrooms and labs, and there is no doubt the best is yet to come.

This fall, 10 new members were inducted to our chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the National Mathematics Honor Society. Members are academically qualified juniors and seniors who maintain strict grade point average requirements and excel in high level math courses. They also participate in Math League, the Study Buddy Tutoring Program, and host school-wide Pi Day activities. The induction was held in a joint ceremony with the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) induction. Congratulations to the following students inducted as new members: Eunyee Cho ’16, Carmen Clarkin ’16, Julia Davis ’17, Megan Gray ’16, Sarah Jacobson ’16, Abigail Kelly ’17, Kaitlyn Koch ’16, Elizabeth Lamont ’17, Sophie Park ’17, and Priya Patel ’17.

IN ALL THINGS, GIVE

Dear Friends, St. Paul reminds us in Thessalonians, In all things, give thanks! Our 2014-2015 Annual Fund motto was Strength in Numbers. Thank you for keeping our numbers strong. Sacred Heart Academy continues to be financially sound and prepared to take on new challenges thanks to YOU! Our strength comes with increased dollars and participation. Alumnae participation grew from 9.78% to 10.24%, surpassing the national average for giving in all-girls’ Catholic high schools. Our alumnae continue to live by Excelsior, helping us to grow ever higher. We embraced 435 new donors, increased participation at our events, and joined the international #GivingTuesday movement…all helping to keep our numbers strong. We changed the look of our annual Auction and realized increased revenue. Our students worked hard to raise funds for their school with the Ad Campaign, Raffle, and Class Giving Days. Committee members diligently planned sensational events including a Wine Tasting in fall, Auction in early spring, and Golf Tournament in May. Additionally, we were granted three wishes—streaming, science, and safety. The State of Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection provided us with a grant of $65,000 enabling us to live stream. The John G. Martin Foundation awarded us a $50,000 grant to renovate the Biological Sciences Laboratory and we received an $18,000 State of Connecticut School Security Competitive Grant to cover costs associated with implementing our school security plan. We are extremely thankful to all involved for making these wishes come true. The purpose of the Office of Mission Advancement is to carry out the mission of the Academy and to fundraise to help maintain excellence in education. Thanks to you, we not only met our 2014-2015 goal, but surpassed it by $82,000. Our most successful year was due to your continued loyalty, unparalleled support, and love of Sacred Heart Academy. We are forever grateful to you and, In all things, we give thanks. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus continue to bless you and your family. With deep appreciation,

Debbie Camner Director of Mission Advancement

2014 - 2015 was the inaugural year for Class Giving Days. While the seniors have participated in the “Senior Showdown” with the graduating class from Notre Dame High School, West Haven for two years, this was the first time all classes participated in a giving day. As a way for current students to leave a legacy for those who will follow in their footsteps, we asked each student to make a donation to the Student Annual Fund. In total, 92 seniors participated, each with a gift of $20.15; 42 juniors each donated $15; 62 sophomores participated, each with a $10 gift; and 79 freshmen donated $5 each. Thank you, students, for leaving a legacy in support of your school. 2012 — 3% Participation Nicole Bowman Florette Pursell Nicole Sroka Brianna Wilson 2013 — 5% Participation Margaret McAndrew Caitlin Pursell Kayla Roddy Sarah Rybacki

Grandparents Offer Special Gift in Kind Gifts in kind is a term used to describe donations of goods and services. At Sacred Heart we are especially fortunate in this area since in December 2014, we graciously accepted the donation of a car. After attending Grandparents’ Day, current grandparents and former parents Robert and Ann Lyons decided rather than sell Ann’s car they would donate it to the Academy. Proceeds from Sacred Heart’s sale of the car were allocated to the 2014-2015 Treasures of the Heart Annual Fund, helping to keep our numbers strong. Thank you, Bob and Ann, for being a Treasure of our Heart! We are most appreciative of this special in-kind donation.

Endowed and Named Scholarships The Sacred Heart Academy Endowment Fund was founded in 1979 by then principal Sr. Ritamary Schulz, ASCJ, ’59. A strong leader and true visionary, Sister realized decades ago that in order for Sacred Heart to continue the promise of excellence in Catholic education for young women, it was necessary to secure the future of the Academy. Thus the Sacred Heart Academy Endowment Fund was established with a goal of raising $150,000. Today, the Endowment Fund is valued at more than $3 million, encompassing gifts to the general endowment as well as more than 60 named scholarships. During the 2014-2015 academic year we were pleased to be the recipient of two new named scholarships: The Pilar Gonzalez ’05 Scholarship and The Carolyn Lee McCormack ’90 Memorial Scholarship.

Donors can establish a named scholarship with a minimum gift of $15,000 which can be paid over a three-year period. Our Endowment Fund holds the principal in perpetuity and distributes only the interest earned, making an everlasting gift to Sacred Heart. To learn more about establishing a named scholarship or to make a gift of any amount to the Sacred Heart Academy Endowment Fund, please contact Debbie Camner for more information.

The Pilar Gonzalez ’05 Scholarship In fall 2001, Pilar Gonzalez entered Sacred Heart Academy. The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ramon Gonzalez, Pilar was an exemplary student and involved in many activities. While a student, her dad invested in the school by taking out a whole life insurance policy. “Every year when I paid the premium there was a smile on my face, knowing someday the funds would benefit Sacred Heart,” he offered. As Dr. Gonzalez prepared to retire from his career in diagnostic radiology, he cashed in this life insurance policy and donated the funds to establish a scholarship in honor of his daughter. Pilar currently serves as Deputy Assistant for the State Attorney’s Office in New Haven. We are grateful for The Pilar Gonzalez ’05 Scholarship, established this year.

The Carolyn Lee McCormack ’90 Memorial Scholarship Following the untimely passing of beloved alumna Carolyn Lee McCormack, Carolyn’s parents, Joseph and Mary Jo Carney Lee ’57, wanted to honor her memory in a special way. They established The Carolyn Lee McCormack ’90 Memorial Scholarship to aid a student at Sacred Heart in need of financial assistance. Gifts to Carolyn’s scholarship, or to any other scholarship, are always welcome. Thank you to Carolyn’s family for keeping her memory alive by enabling a young woman in need of financial aid the opportunity to attend Sacred Heart.

Special Events....

Oh, What a

Year

(Left)The prayer service during Grandparents’ Day; (Top right) Golfers enjoy the Annual Sacred Heart Academy Golf Tournament; (Bottom right) Students performing a number from Singin’ in the Rain.

Special Events at Sacred Heart serve as both friendraisers and fundraisers. All of the 2014 -2015 events exceeded expectations. Thank you to the many volunteers, guests, and donors for contributing to this amazing success. In support of the musical production of Singin’ in the Rain, students raised nearly $67,000 selling advertisements for the 2014 Musical Ad Campaign. Congratulations to our students! Sophomores and their grandparents enjoyed a special morning at the sixth annual Grandparents’ Day in October. Robert Lyons, father of Lauragene Lyons Katz ’71 and Mary Lyons Samson ’81, and grandfather of Ann Samson ’17 and Cara Samson ’19, spoke about the importance of legacy and

why his daughters, and now granddaughters, attend Sacred Heart Academy. Coffee and refreshments were served as the cast of Singin’ in the Rain entertained our honored guests. The morning concluded with a beautiful prayer service which celebrated the “strong bonds” between granddaughters and their grandparents. Special thanks to Kathy McDonough McGarry ’77 for sharing her photography talents with us that day. On the First Friday of Advent, current students celebrate the tradition of legacy with their alumnae mothers and grandmothers. The annual Legacy Mass is a very special event for families representing the living legacy of the Academy. Guests were greeted by the Greene Street Girls who continue to serve as representatives of the original graduating classes of the 1950s. Auction 2015 raised nearly $143,000 in support of the Academy. Chaired by parents Jeff and Frances Pellegrino Granquist ’80, over 300 guests had the opportunity to bid

on hundreds of beautifully donated items. Guests enjoyed a delightful evening Under the Tuscan Sun due largely to the many parent and alumnae volunteers. Perhaps the most compelling portion of the evening was Hands Up for Heart, an initiative which raised $70,000 for need-based scholarships. Many thanks to the Hands Up Committee, chaired by Robert and Kristin McMahon. It was a perfect day for golf at the 23rd Annual Sacred Heart Academy Golf Tournament which took place in May at The New Haven Country Club. With the help of our sponsors, donors, and golfers, more than $34,000 was raised to benefit the Golf Tournament Scholarship Fund, enabling young women in need of financial assistance to attend the Academy. The day was “fore” the girls, but was enjoyed by all. Thank you to Sacred Heart fathers David Lamberti and Bill Christie for chairing the tournament and to the many current and former parents and alumnae on the golf committee for making this year’s tournament a huge success.

Reunion 2015

The best part about Reunion is that after 45 years, it’s as though it’s only been 45 days since you last saw your classmates. The connection is still there and as strong as Joyce B. Comer ’70 ever!

Thank you for a most memorable day! It began with anticipation and slight anxiety and ended feeling relaxed, inspired, and very grateful for all my blessings and opportunities, especially for being an Excelsior woman! God bless everyone who helped make this day special!

Reunion was fabulous! I have always been a proud alumna and have many beautiful, spiritual memories of chapel and yet the liturgy on this day was unmatched in its poignancy. The love we share, and are able to celebrate, is incredible! Andrea Laudano ’75
