The building of a Cathedral …is a historic moment in the life of a diocese. We have looked forward to the day when we would be able to worship together as a family of faith in our new Cathedral. Now that day is drawing close. A Cathedral is an organic building that continues to take on the life of a diocese even many years and decades after the completion of the structure. Our Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is designed to allow opportunities for the people and parishes of the diocese and beyond to be permanently remembered and incorporated into the legacy of the “Mother Church” of the Diocese of Knoxville. In addition to a Cathedral being , “theology in stone”, the artwork and furnishings of a Cathedral are similar to the offerings of bread, wine and monetary donations that are brought forward at Mass. They represent the gratitude of the faithful who are gathered to worship the Lord who has given all good gifts to us. In offering our gifts to God, we ask Him to bless them and make our a gifts a blessing to others. The Honor and Memorial Book is an invitation to participate in making an offering to the honor and glory of God. It is a special opportunity to help create a Cathedral that will serve as the center of worship and hospitality for the vibrant and growing Catholic community in East Tennessee. All donors of these items as well as the many benefactors who have generously supported the construction of the building itself will be permanently displayed in the Narthex of the Cathedral so that a living legacy will be made visible to all who come to pray or worship in our Cathedral for generations to come. May God bless you for your generosity, Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Richard F. Stika Bishop of Knoxville
Very Rev. David A. Boettner, V.G. Rector, Sacred Heart Cathedral
