San Antonio Botanical Garden 555 Funston Place

A Family Owned & Operated Four-Paw Resort. Complex Changes: Will alt. art return to Blue Star? It’s a shame for the arts community when a gathering space is lost...Blue Star used to be the place where the artists had a chance to meet up with the rest of San Antonio. BUT, as the impressionists taught us, we don’t need a sanctioned place to make good art. As far as meet up spots go, other nests, like the Pearl Brewery/Tobin Hills area, are blooming all over the city. I suggest art lovers check out the Second Friday Art Walk (High Wire Art Gallery on Josephine is a good jumping off point.) People are still celebrating local art there, and it’s a fun LOCAL happening. And as far as Blue Star goes, I am sorry for the owners and most of the residents. It used to be a great scene. Sorry you lost it. — Coffey Artist What James Lifshutz is doing now is essentially pissing on the legacy that his father handed to him. He’s a man who’s all about bottom line and could really care less about the SEVERAL artists who were basically thrown out by his quasi-management lackeys who jacked rents way up. There was no room for discussion on any of it: People were there one day and gone the next. Some of these people had been at the complex for 15+ years. What BSAC has become and what it once was are two very different things. Very little art now, lots of loud drunk people thanks to 1919 and no respect for residents who are left there. I am sad to see a great idea by a great man be soiled by the needs of his greedy kin. — artesvida

New Restaurant 1. The Luxury 103 E Jones, (210) 254-2274, twitter.com/TheLuxurySA Two years in the making, chef Andrew Weissman’s riverside shipping container haven is finally open, and the little people rejoice. Though sharing the fine locally sourced ingredients used at his upscale joints, Il Sogno and Sandbar, Weissman keeps the Luxury’s price points low. This almost-an-ice-house pours an elite collection of beers and wines, and offers a short, but scrumptious, list of hearty salads and internationally inspired sandwiches that — at $8 for pulled pork, $9 for fish banh mi, and $11 for lamb souvlaki — won’t take a heavy gouge out of your wallet.

Cupcake 1. Kate’s Frosting Multiple locations, Katesfrosting.com True story: we here at the Current were having a tough time plowing through ‘Best of’ write-ups while news broke of the tragic explosions last week and we needed something stronger than a brisk walk and lighter than a stiff drink to keep us focused. Enter the cupcake. Just browsing Kate’s adorable, special Fiesta-themed menu — with options like Piñata (vanilla with pineapple cream and coconut shavings) and Rainbow Margarita — brightened our day, and even the healthiest health freak swooned for the famous Red Slipper (red velvet with a cherry on top) and Chocolate Tres Leches. Now that’s comfort food.

The croissants and pain au chocolate are golden flakes of goodness, but try the selection of sweet and savory tarts, too. And for a special friend, take home a box of their macarons (not to be confused with coconut macaroons), a meringue confection quickly approaching local legend.

Hailed as a “five-star ode to the trattorias and osterias of Rome and Florence,” Andrew Weissman’s Il Sogno infuses the rustic flavors of Italy into everything from the house-made cheeses and pastas to hearty entrées and pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven. Alluring as the banquettes may be, the best seats in the house are parked in front of the open kitchen — offering a bird’s-eye view of culinary choreography to rival Iron Chef America. Especially if you factor in a bottle from the extensive wine list (which traverses Italy with offerings as low as $25 and as high as $399), tickets add up quickly, but one can still live the dream without breaking the bank. Add a trio from the colorful antipasti bar ($10) to the panini of the day ($12) or a spicy pizza Atomica ($15) and you’ve got a meal for two — especially if you’re saving room for tiramisu.

Belgium is a tiny country on the western edge of Europe, famous for amazing French-style pastries and really good pomme frites or French fries. But it’s not France. We let your choice stand because, as does many a restaurant in Brussels or Ghent, La Frite Belgian Bistro doles out some good French cooking. They won their reputation with their steamed mussels, but for a treat with a stronger French accent, go for steak tartare. Of course, there’s loads of wine and good beer on hand, the latter our preference for washing down les frites.

Dosaritas Chinese Food 1. Golden Wok Multiple locations, golden-wok.com Whether you’re looking to gorge yourself on dim sum or are more in the mood for a little egg drop soup with a side of oolong, Golden Wok is the place to be. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s got a great happy hour to boot. This place is most popular on the weekend, when the dim sum selection is carted around for patrons to choose from, so expect a wait. Golden Wok can get a bit pricey (those delicious morsels add up, you know), but the charming decor and tasty treats are certainly worth the extra change. Oh, and if you can’t handle the crowds or parking lot showdowns, opt for delivery. Dim-me sum-a that!

Enjoy the Game on one of our 11 TV’s

Here we thought our readers had discovered some new gem in the Thousand Oaks hinterlands. Instead, we got the Gypsy Café. Let’s suspend our disbelief and assume that Gypsy came by these titles honestly, and not via bot-bombing. They do, in fact, stay open late and offer hookahs, but based on our experience, we can’t recommend the Mediterranean food — the writer we dispatched to Gypsy called the falafel “little blobs of salty, super deep-fried unpleasantness,” and compared the hummus and pita to spackling paste and cardboard, respectively. Also, unless your idea of a good lounge crowd is a lone table of cologne-doused 18-year-olds giggling, blowing smoke rings, and cracking gay jokes (really?!), we advise you look elsewhere for evening socializing.

Of the practically countless options, both hot and cold, a few crowd favorites include the turkey pastrami Reuben, jalapeño roast beef, “Turkey Chupacabra” with Serrano sauce, and the new cheesesteak. The bravest of diners choose “Pele’s Fire,” a roast beef with ghost pepper sauce that’ll put hair on your chest. With the recent addition of a tap room in the old filling station building next door, no one ever really needs to eat anywhere else.

Steakhouse ► 1. Little Red Barn 1902 S Hackberry, (210) 532-4235, littleredbarnsteakhouse.com Definitely not as “little” as the name may have you believe, this institution on the South East side attracts people from all walks of life with their stellar daily special deals (we’re partial to the Rodeo, which includes an 8 oz. ribeye, side, salad, drink, and dessert for under $20) and kitschy vibe. It may also be the best restaurant to celebrate a birthday in, where all the be-fringed cowgirl waitresses line up to sing “Happy Birthday” with a special kick at the end. Yee haw!

Seafood 1. Sea Island Shrimp House Multiple locations, (210) 342-7771, shrimphouse.com From turning his father’s downtown landmark Manhattan Cafe into one of SA’s first desegregated restaurants back in ’63 to co-founding a “fast-casual” eatery specializing in wild-caught, sustainable seafood in ’65, restaurateur Dan Anthony lived life ahead of the curve. Nearly half a century after Anthony opened his Rector Street flagship (with wife Chrissy and friend Henry Reed), Sea Island is a flourishing homegrown chain that serves roughly one ton of fish daily to customers at six local restaurants — all owned and operated by the Anthony family. Offering a wealth of fried combos (served with homey sides like hushpuppies and coleslaw) alongside such time-tested signatures as “World Famous Charbroiled Shrimp,” the menu’s evolved to include Mexican-inspired dishes (including ceviche and fish tacos) and is wisely rounded out with grilled options for the calorie counters and beef kabobs for the ichthyophobic.

Korean Restaurant 1. Ilsong Garden 6905 Blanco, (210) 366-4508, ilsonggarden.com Consistently regarded as the most authentic Korean joint in town, Ilsong Garden’s lunch specials, sushi bar, and traditional Korean and Japanese fare keep the people coming back. Particularly notable are the spicy pork bulgogi, bibimbap (rice, veggies, and meat or tofu with a fried egg on top), and the pricier chef’s special prime rib bulgogi. The vegetable pancake is good, but made even better with the addition of kimchi and shrimp for $4 more, and most meals come with an assortment of small and tasty pan chan sides.

Ice cream 1. Brindles Awesome Ice Creams 11255 Huebner, (210) 641-5222 It is a shame that an ice cream store this good doesn’t have a website. But you do find them on Facebook and, better still, you find them in the store. Delicious, store-made (literally) ice cream, gelato and even espresso, with flavors that go anywhere from the traditional to an irresistible mix of mint, pineapple, coconut, and habanero (!). I could bore you forever with a long explanation of how gelato is churned at a slower speed than ice cream (thus making it even more fattening, always a sign that the shit’s good), but better check for yourself.

Grey Moss offers escapism about half an hour outside of downtown, under the shade of giant Oaks and twinkling lights on the edge of the Hill Country. They know better than to interfere with intimate dinners by throwing a complicated menu into the mix. Grey Moss proposes familiar, impressive choices like escargot, filets, lobster, and lamb, and a wine selection wide enough to turn even the most awkward first date into a relaxing evening. Chicken-Fried Steak 1. De Wese’s Tip Top Café 8214 Fredericksburg, (210) 732-0191, tiptopcafe.com The trusty, musty Tip Top has been serving up down home cookin’ since 1938. Things don’t change much around the wood-paneled dining room, not the decor, the ancient waitresses, or the menu, in which the lone appetizer is vegetable soup. Bless their hearts, it suits us just fine. Firstly, ain’t nobody need an appetizer when ordering the chicken-fried steak entrée. It might not qualify for a Man v. Food challenge, but it’s still bigger than your face. Secondly, the steak’s expertly battered and fried: golden and crispy on the outside and meaty and tender on the inside, and served atop a reservoir of perfectly peppery cream gravy. While a lot of indulgent food coasts by on its jaw-dropping calorie count alone, this country-fried slab of delight is worth every mile you’ll run, swim, or bike to work it off.

100 E Grayson, (210) 267-9040, lagloriaicehouse.com

A staff favorite for their veggie-friendly menu, readers likely voted Pho Sure tops for its pho soup, Vietnamese-style sandwiches, and lemongrass-spiked specials. Though they also make overtures to Chinese, Thai, and Japanese cuisines, we recommend you try some of their lesser-known Vietnamese specialties if you’re not a pho fan. We particularly crave the Vietnamese eggroll, served with DIY lettuce wraps as an appetizer or as a hangover-busting entrée with vermicelli rice noodles. Wash it all down with a bubble milk tea, offered in a variety of funky flavors.

If you’re looking for a tasty snack on the river, try a La Gloria ceviche. Touting itself as a restaurant offering authentic Mexican street dishes, La Gloria is nestled in the Pearl Brewery complex with a great view of the Museum Reach. Our server recommended the Ceviche Estilo Nayarit, one of seven options. The dish was a cool and refreshing relief from the spring heat. Cucumbers formed a calm base, with red onions adding a hint of sweetness and Serrano peppers spicing up the lemony shrimp.

Locally Crafted Product 1. Ranger Creek beer Ranger Creek Brewing and Distilling, 4834 Whirlwind, (210) 775-2099 drinkrangercreek.com Once a brewery powerhouse, San Antonio lost the big companies, but now shows talent brewing more refined beers. Famous amongst Texas beer aficionados for their seasonal offerings, and gaining rep and shelf-space at select bars for their small-batch whiskey, Ranger Creek makes a line of beers that we try again and again. Our current fave is their dark ale, La Bestia Aimable (sic), and OPA, an oatmeal pale ale. But when the summer heats up, we might capitulate to Lucky ’Ol Sun, a golden ale inspired by the best of Belgium.

630 NW Loop 410

This homegrown dry cleaning chain goes beyond offering non-toxic and solventfree solutions to perk up funky duds. Clothesline uses several natural cleaners like banana oil, citrus and soy agents, and silk protein to tackle the trickiest stains on everything from wool coats to down comforters. At each location you can also purchase an EcoBag to pick up your clean clothes — instead of those annoying plastic sleeves — and you can recycle your wire hangers, too. Founder Derba Mills and an all-around cheerful staff make it surprisingly easy to be green.

Here in a strip mall, Pikachu, Sonic, and Sailor Moon coexist with erasers shaped like hamsters ($1.25), wacky cellphone charms ($2.99), and graphic tees imported from Japan ($19.99). But the niche hangout’s vibrant card scene is perhaps the larger draw. On a recent Saturday, fans of the RPG (roleplaying game) Legacy converged in a large room for a weekly tournament. (Magic: The Gathering and Vanguard are also in rotation.) Cashier Lacey Beaty explained that some come to compete, others to trade and “amp up their decks.” Fueled by ramen and energy drinks (both sold onsite), these meetings of the minds rage into the wee hours on weekend nights, when Ooples stays open till 2 a.m.

Flea Market ► 1. Traders Village 9333 SW Loop 410 , (210) 623-8383, tradersvillage.com Advertised as a “swap meet, treasure hunt, shopping complex, county fair, and festival attraction all rolled into one,” Traders Village is a sprawling flea market on steroids, orbiting around an 80-foot high carnival ride dubbed Star Dancer. Once through the “Toll Plaza” ($2 per car) and parked in the seemingly endless lot, the behemoth can be tackled from a number of angles. With a reported 1,000 vendors, the often empty promise “something for everyone” could be true here — especially if you’re in the market for Flying Super Grover ($20); gag rolls of Sticky Buns, Burning Sensation, and Itchy Butt toilet paper ($3); a pink zebraprint Playboy comforter ($40); or a stun gun (layaway available!). Beyond these temptations, there’s plenty to keep young’uns occupied (including pony rides, a petting zoo, and an arcade) plus street food, beer and aguas frescas, and periodic events like roller derby bouts, car shows, and boxing matches.

James Avery (Quarry Market) 255 E Basse, (210) 822-0048, jamesavery.com Growing up in San Antonio, the James Avery charm bracelet, first created by Avery (left, with sons) in nearby Kerrville, was every tween girl’s dream. We got sterling silver charms for all kinds of achievements – playing a sport, making the play, joining the choir or band, getting good grades, as well as birthdays, confirmations, anniversaries, Christmas — all in the same distinctive, flat James Avery style. Upon arriving at the quiet, warm JA shop in the Quarry Market, despite the decade separating us from our last Avery bauble, we made a beeline for the charm section. Charms can now be had to document your love for sweet tea, lighthouses, cupcakes, and flip-flops. Of course, James Avery also makes necklaces, rings and earrings, in gold, copper, gemstones, and leather. Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and the jeweler offers dozens of ways to make your mom feel special. Dig out your old charm bracelet and get an update while you’re at it. Evolve Boutique 22806 US 281 N, Ste. 105, (210) 549-5001, evolveboutique.co Online shopping increasingly lures us away from the time-consuming process of picking through the racks, offering oh-so-convenient e-blasts and social media updates about new trends and big sales. Too bad none of that supports an independent business or the local economy (well, maybe our UPS guy). Enter Evolve – a locally owned boutique that’s totally on trend, completely online, and talks to its customers regularly through Facebook and e-mails. Check the sweet mint chevron shift they’re currently offering for an example of the buyers’ style. If you don’t like to shop online, Evolve’s brick-and-mortar outpost is located on 281 North. Added bonus — Evolve is committed to good deeds and regularly hosts fundraisers for local causes (like the one for the children of Fox News anchor Karen Martinez, who recently passed away from breast cancer). Beat that, internet.

We all know that smoking cigarettes is stupid, but it would be a crying shame if there were no cigars in the world. And pipes, too. They’re both made for tasting, not vacuuming in, the smoke of the heavenly leaf that Native Americans wisely reserved for special occasions. Candyflavored cheap cigars are to be had at any corner store, but you’d do best to avoid that junk and go for the real thing: Arturo Fuentes, made in the Dominican Republic, or their premium brand, Ashton, or maybe a nice maduro from Jamaica. Club Humidor has these, and dozens more.

19186 Blanco, Ste. 101, (210) 888-2933, cigarpointe.com

It all started with an Ewok dress. Crissy Baker (pictured with Nerd Alert, second from left) saw a need in San Antonio for her fellow geek girls to represent themselves and their obsessions. T-shirts just weren’t cutting it. Says Baker, “Being a proud nerd can get tricky for girls. It’s a mostly male-dominated culture, and there just aren’t a lot of ways to be a part of it while being feminine, unless you’re in full costume. Our clothes are meant to give girls the option of being stylish while still showing that deep love for all things geeky.” In addition to comic con-worthy ensembles, Nerd Alert produces sweet vintagestyle dresses in quirky patterns from Ghostbusters to The Evil Dead. Baker and her three co-designers have been so successful they’ve gone offline to catch up and start a new collection. Look for their new online store in the next month. Design long and prosper.

When it opened nearly 40 years ago as a Schwinn shop, Bike World was one of the first to champion cycling in San Antonio. It’s now part of the patchwork of local cycle shops, offering a range of road bikes, cruisers, and hybrids out of its restored 1920s-era building in Alamo Heights, and a newer location on Loop 1604 near Bulverde Road. Eager to promote the growing bike community in San Antonio, the shop regularly offers tips on trails, group rides, and safety, and even played a role in bringing the B-Cycle public bike-share system to San Antonio.

Who the hell is JC Caylen? How dare this kid steal the spotlight from serious artists, you know, the ones who make movies and stuff? Well, only 100,633 subscribers who clicked on his YouTube channel 2,943,815 times know the answer to that question. Caylen is all about making faces and, basically, filming anything he feels like whenever he feels like it. Learn from him how to pick up a girl (“make sure you shower and have good hygiene”) and about the importance of not wasting ice (really: do not waste ice). Move over, Bryan Ortiz. Born and bred in the Alamo City, Rick Riordan is the author/alchemist of The New York Times’ best-selling young adult series Percy Jackson and the Olympians (the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief, was made into a feature film), the Heroes of Olympus, and the Kane Chronicles. In 2011, he received the Children’s Choice Book Award for Author of the Year. In addition to creating books of fiction for YA readers, Riordan has written an award-winning mystery series about English Ph.D-martial arts master-private eye Tres Navarre for the grown-ups. Those tales combine the sleuth with prickly conundrums and casualties in South Texas. This fall Riordan will release The Titan’s Curse, a graphic novel adaptation by Robert Vendetti and art by Attila Futaki, along with The House of Hades, part four of the Heroes of Olympus series.

Reyes describes cupping as “a different massage” and works with a plastic or silicon cup to suction the skin in what’s called negative pressure to draw out toxins. In addition to working her magic on clientele and the Alamo City Rollergirls (she is their official massage therapist), Reyes is an advocate and founder of the group Wear A Helmet For Your Mom, created after her son suffered a serious motorcycle accident. Drag Queen/King 1. Erica Andrews (1969-2013) If you search Google images for “Erica Andrews,” the top hits show the late performer winning Miss International Queen in Thailand and posing on the red carpet at the Tribeca Film Festival. It’s safe to say Andrews, who was born Eddie Salazar and passed away from a lung infection in March, would’ve wanted these Cinderella moments to come first. Arriving on the local drag scene as Erica Hutton, the former San Antonian earned a reputation as an exacting chameleon by channeling everyone from Joan Crawford to Jessica Rabbit in routines that verged on performance art. Often billed as “the most beautiful drag queen in captivity,” Andrews lived life by the mantra “practice love, not labels” and cited drag mother Tandi Andrews as catalyst for a transformation that led to talk show appearances, plays, pageant victories, and roles in the films Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives and Trantasia.

Chasnoff was a solid newshound during his days as a City Hall/politics reporter for the Express-News, but when the paper bumped him up to columnist last year, dude got unchained. Like most good columnists, Chasnoff regularly delivers smart writing with a healthy dose of righteous indignation. When he settles into a topic, the guy’s relentless. Curator at The Paint Yard, a spray paint shop and gallery located on the 500 block of San Pedro, Nik Soupe hardly grew up a delinquent. He first picked up his spray can one summer at his dad’s auto body shop and started priming cars. He says painting with spray paint feels more abstract than other mediums, but he still creates a vivid, photorealistic style. “It’s all an illusion but once you learn the tricks it becomes magic,” said Soupe. Painting in front of a live audience gives him an adrenaline rush where mistakes suddenly aren’t mistakes anymore, they’re part of an evolving process. See Soupe live at the Paint Yard’s next Content Under Pressure (CUP) event in May, with national and international graffiti artists.

◄ Beard 1. Chris Champlin Chris Champlin likes to call himself “an agent of the collective.” The Overtime Theater’s sole employee, Champlin does a little bit of everything, from answering phones and working the box office to helping build sets. Champlin helped guide the Overtime through its latest relocation/expansion. Exiting stage left from Blue Star amid the Art Complex’s reconstruction last year, “the people’s theater” has settled nicely into its new digs right off the River Walk’s Museum Reach. The closest thing San Antonio has to fringe, off-beat theater, Champlin’s a good Overtime spokesman. On a recent visit, he showed up with aviator goggles and a safari hat in tow. He began growing out his beard soon after he finished his days as a military contractor. His latest beard — for which he’s very well known, apparently — sports about three years’ growth.

At the Overtime Theater, The Denials have cemented their tenure as house improv troupe by showing up week after week ready to say ‘yes.’ The troupe runs its permanent 10:30 p.m. Saturday night slot a la Whose Line is it Anyway, performing silly improv games for the audience while frequently recruiting audience members to join in on the fun. Just say ‘yes.’

Winner of this category in our Best of 2010-2011 issues, Solar San Antonio executive director Lanny Sinkin has always been in our top three for this spot. Replacing his father, Solar SA founder (and soonto-be centenarian) Bill Sinkin as director in 2009 has brought the younger Sinkin much praise. An activist at heart, Sinkin fought against the construction of the South Texas Project, a nuclear power facility in Bay City in the ’70s and his legal career gave him experience in many environmental, civil rights, and national security areas. Under his direction, Solar SA tenaciously pursues bringing solar and other sustainable energy sources to all San Antonians, and given the latest tribulations with CPS’ solar energy programs, we’re thankful the sun hasn’t set on Sinkin’s activist ways.

1. Joe “Pags” Pagliarulo WOAI 1200 AM, radio.woai.com Looking for Bill O’Reilly-grade conservatism with some Glenn Beck passion, just without all the spittle and tears? Look no further than Clear Channel’s Joe Pagliarulo. Sure, he’ll tear down the liberal nanny state with the best of ‘em, but Pags does it with a bit more wit, congeniality, and style. San Antonio is glad to see Pags pull through his battle with testicular cancer, his humor clearly unscathed. “If someone wanted to argue with me, I’d say, ‘But I have cancer!” he joked with the Houston Chronicle. “People would tell me to ‘have a ball.’”

SA’s burgeoning burlesque scene has some hot talent — and you’ve ID’d the top contenders, people. All three winning troupes are tempting, but your first choice really seals the deal. With an all-star cast filled with pros from JumpStart Performance Company (including Foxxy Blue Orchid, aka Dino Foxx, and Black Orchid, aka S.T. Shimi), Stars & Garters has an edge that takes the show beyond the bump and grind into arty, pan-sexual territory. Ooh la, la.

In the case of pregnancy, familiarity often breeds (excuse the pun) security. For first-time mothers, or women wanting a change from a previous birth experience, a good referral can make all the difference. In fact, that’s how doula Tina Castellanos gets many of her clients — “they say they see my name everywhere.” Probably because, honestly, Castellanos strives to offer enough services to be a “one stop shop” for women — from natural childbirth counselor to doula to breastfeeding educator. Castellanos prides herself on working with families from pregnancy through the birth, on to lactation support, and even answering questions as children grow. Already trained as a Bradley Natural Childbirth Instructor, by the Doulas of North America, and as an IBCLC Lactation Consultant, she is currently enrolled at the University of Texas School of Public Health, pursuing a Masters degree in Maternal and Child Health.

Stephanie Guerra, the mastermind behind Puro Pinche, truly has her finger on the pulse of San Antonio’s live music scene. Unrivaled amongst local music blogs, Puro Pinche’s website, Twitter feed, and Facebook page constantly aggregate and share need-to-know information about shows and events happening around town. On the recently launched and endearingly informal Puro Pinche show, Guerra reviews her weekend activities, delivers the inside scoop about upcoming art, music, and cultural events, and interviews guests including musical groups Making Movies, Lonely Horse, and Los TexManiacs with the help of her cohost, Renee Carta.

1. TIE: David Robinson/George Strait

U.S. House of Representatives (D20), castro.house.gov While this category traditionally goes to our U.S. House District 20 rep, formerly Charlie Gonzalez (successor of Henry B.), it’s nice to see some fresh meat in the Best Elected Official category. In his new national role, Castro the (one-minute) younger has created a political identity for himself wholly separate from his twin, Mayor Julián Castro. He’s president of the House Democrats’ freshman class, and sits on the influential Foreign Affairs and Armed Services committees. Castro’s made the media rounds taking up important issues like immigration and Medicaid expansion, giving off an affable, yet informed, vibe. A whisper campaign pitting Castro against loudmouthed freshman Ted Cruz for his U.S. senate seat has already started, but by the time that election comes — in 2018 — Castro may have moved on to even bigger things.

The pairing of David Robinson and the still-active Tim Duncan gave San Antonio its first two NBA championship rings and, like Duncan, Robinson is the perfect Saytown hero: classy on and off the field, low-profile, and scandal-free. He’s a loveable guy even if he hadn’t won two NBA championships, two gold medals (and one bronze) at the Olympics, and one World championship, among a long list of achievements. He is also one of only five players in history to score a quadruple double (34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 blocks against Detroit in ’94). Take that, Charles Barkley.

No one in history (in any genre, any chart) has had more number one singles than George Strait (59, to be exact), and only Elvis and the Beatles have more number one albums than him. The Poteet native singer, songwriter, actor, and producer’s 28th album, Love is Everything, is out May 14. After selling more than 70 million albums, Strait is still swingin’, and swingin’ strong.

This is the place to be if you feel like wearing your cowgirl boots, putting away some Shiners, and riding the mechanical bull into the sunset. Cowboys Dancehall hosts a variety of events, from pop country superstars in concert to a weekly teen night and dance lessons for those feeling boot scoot-deficient. Hotel Bar ► 1. Ocho at Hotel Havana 1015 Navarro, (210) 222-2008, havanasanantonio.com The term “hotel bar” conjures memories of a dimly lit mahogany lounge with a few commercial travelers tended by a tired barkeep who ignores his regulars — two working girls, hoping for an easy mark. Not so, Ocho. Perched over the river, the glass and steel vault of the tropical-themed room is filled with light by day, and the eclectic pan-Latin cuisine attracts a stylish crowd from afternoon to night. Or perhaps it’s the bar menu, with tropical cocktails that include a mojito Papa Hemingway would approve of, and several killer wines by the glass sourced from Hispania and Latin America.

Best Bartender 1. Elyse Blechman The Irish Pub, 9726 Datapoint, (210) 692-7620 An unassuming pot o’ gold near Medical Center, the Irish Pub’s lucky charms are considerably enhanced by bubbly bartender Elyse Blechman. The UTSA fine arts student pours her creativity into every cocktail, favoring cordials, infused liquors, and “other out-there ideas from baking,” another of her passions. Also a craft beer fan, Blechman can mix, muddle, and mingle with the best of them, counting her regulars among her circle of friends. That should hint at how seriously she takes the social aspect of her job. “I have such a great time going to work and creating an atmosphere where people can enjoy themselves,” and keep on coming back, she said, noting, “you can always go home and drink.”

Craft Beer Selection // Michelada // Patio // Dog Friendly Restaurant 1. The Friendly Spot 943 S Alamo, (210) 224-BEER, thefriendlyspot.com You’d be forgiven for mistaking this Southtown ice house for a dog park. Above the din of the crowd or the occasional Spurs game, you’ll hear pooches barking next to their boozed-up owners. The laid-back, outdoor setting makes it a perfect place for four-legged friends and, with recent renovations, we expect to see even more dog owners pick The Friendly Spot as their favorite watering hole. With a monster new bar in the back, The Friendly Spot’s tap count jumped from 20 to 76 — almost all are craft beers, many of them Texas brews. Their micheladas are no slouch, either. Our neighborhood Friendlies grabbed that category again this year.

◄ Cocktails, New Bar/Club 516 Brooklyn, (210) 444-0707, thebrooklynitesa.com Your choices show you’re savvy to our nascent cocktail culture, San Antonio, no arguments from our drink experts on these. But putting Jeret Peña’s establishment on top shows a special refinement. Even before launching The Brooklynite last year, Peña racked up national honors with a Rising Star Mixologist award from Starchefs.com and a James Beard Outstanding Bar Program nomination (at his previous gig with The Esquire). Now that he’s got his own place, he’s more than proved his promise, staffing this retro-focused spot by the river with some of the suavest young bartenders in town.

Wine Bar ► 1. Copa Wine Bar 19141 Stone Oak Pkwy, Ste. 704, (210) 495-2672, thecopawinebar.com The flyover from 281 to 1604 makes Stone Oak much more accessible to downtowners, but after inching up Stone Oak Parkway, we still needed a drink. Luckily, Copa offered the perfect reward. A warm faux Tuscan interior, friendly staff, and neighborhood vibe makes Copa a worthy destination. Wines by the glass are moderately priced (most between $7 and $11) but the flights are the best value. We sampled the Vino Diavolo flight, four glasses of spicy Italian reds, for $18. No pinche shots of wine here — a good strong pour of each set us for the evening. Consider augmenting your wine swilling with selections from Copa’s tasty menu — tapas, pommes frites with a rotating list of exotic sauces, a choose-your-own cheese plate, and a selection of pizzas offered either thin crust-style or on lavash flatbread. We started with the classic pepperoni Parma, half-price during happy hour, but ended with the signature Romagna flatbread — mozzarella, spinach, prosciutto and lemon sauce— mangia!

1. The Lion and Rose 5148 Broadway (for smoking, multiple locations elsewhere in SA) (210) 822-7673, thelionandrose.com Home to British comfort food like bangers and mash, fish and chips, and a hearty selection of international beers to wash ‘em down, the Lion and Rose is a local exemplar of Britain’s best export — the neighborhood pub. A recent visit proved the point, when a stogie-chomping geezer (yes, you can still smoke in Alamo Heights) demanded royalty fees for our photos. “Just tryin’ to help out my friends, the management,” he said. “I come here all the time.” A true local, indeed. For a more sociable crowd, join in the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz, dates and time vary by location.

Happy Hour 1. Lüke 125 E Houston, (210) 227-5853, lukesanantonio.com Due to its location inside the Embassy Suites downtown, happy hour prices at Lüke, where a domestic craft beer can run upward of $7, may seem like regular prices just about anywhere else in SA. However, Lüke is awfully democratic in its deals; half off of beer and wine by the glass, and generous mark-downs on several specialty cocktails and small plates. It’s also on seven days a week, giving working stiffs stuck in the office from 3-6 p.m. on weekdays a chance to catch up on Saturday or Sunday, and Tuesday’s is extended to 8 p.m. For a real steal, come hungry for 50-cent raw or fried Gulf oysters ($1 if charbroiled), and wash ’em down with a Pearl, or the less-poetic Lone Star, $2 during Happy Hour.

Rock Club 1. Nightrocker Live 605 San Pedro, (210) 265-3573, nightrockerlive.net Nightrocker Live has been showcasing metal, rock, hip-hop, and even reggae on a regular basis since opening in 2009. Stand-up comedy and a sexy tattoo ladies’ night help round out the weekly schedule. The last time we visited, it was for the annual Ram Jam, a fitting place to host the tribute to dearly departed Ram Ayala since the venue, founded by Roland “Nightrocker” Fuentes, sticks to Ayala’s Taco Land formula pretty well: cheap tequila, loud, local music, and an utter disgust for pretension of any kind. Just the way a rock club should be.

And this year, the best spot in San Antonio to satiate that urge is University Bowl. With 32 lanes and a family friendly atmosphere, you’ll feel the tension of a long day’s work slowly dissipating. Fancy some time away from the kids? Check out the pub. 1. Mission Reach

1. Humane Society

Sanantonioriver.org/mission_reach/mission_reach.php

4804 Fredericksburg, (210) 226-7461, sahumane.org

Cruise down Mission Reach during spring’s temperate climes and you’ll have to agree, this rehabbed stretch of the San Antonio River is pretty damned special. Wildflowers and waterfowl compete for attention, while the paved routes accommodate most any type of bike. The South Side reach, which connects to a larger bike trail system along the river that starts near the San Antonio Zoo, recently opened an additional two-mile long section between Padre Park to Mission San Juan. The entire 10.2 mile project, stretching from Roosevelt Park and Lone Star Boulevard to Mission Espada, is due to be completed by the end of August. The proximity to several municipal parks and the Missions means amenities are never too far away, and a recent influx of B-Cycle hubs allows everyone to ride the river, bike-owner or not.

San Antonio’s premier no-kill shelter boasts a 97 percent save rate (2012). Adoption fees are $65$99 for dogs and $30-$50 for cats and include spay/neuter surgery, first set of vaccinations, microchip, de-wormer, flea and heartworm prevention, collar, tag, complimentary wellness exam within the first five days of adoption, 14-day complimentary follow up care at any VCA animal hospital, 30 days Sheltercare insurance, and a $5 coupon for Science Diet pet food. Hot dog! But seriously, please do not buy your companion animal: adopt it from places like the Humane Society. Accept the fact that there aren’t enough homes for living animals, and spay or neuter yours.

Lots of quiet, tree-covered nooks offer ideal siesta spots. Shady, green open spaces abound, perfect for picnicking. Jogging Trail 1. River Walk Thesanantonioriverwalk.com This one hits close to home, as we truly do jog the River Walk at least once a week. Though a cement surface occasionally clogged with tourists might not seem the best running environment, the River Walk has three important features: First, it’s lighted at night; second, it’s relatively flat; third, if you start at the Pearl, you have easy, secure parking, and the promise of a La Gloria margarita after your five miler. Where else can you run through public art, race river taxis (you always win!), and admire the famous light displays during the holidays?

DIY House Venue 1. That Place Off Evergreen Established as That Place Off Evergreen in 2010, the top floor of the two-story house with chipped white paint has played host to its fair share of SA’s bands, punk rockers, hipsters, and gangsters. Tenants Daniel Zamarripa and Josh Vera came up with the concept. Vera said, “We’re just two people with a house. It’s the community that makes Evergreen, Evergreen.” The two slowly began booking bands from the usual locals (the Last Nighters, Lonely Horse, Deer Vibes) to national acts such as New York’s The Dig and Indianapolis’ Hotfox. Unfortunately the house (as a venue) has recently been on hiatus due to complaints from their last way-over-capacity party of Halloween 2012. Zamarripa says he plans to book bands soon but would like to lay low for a while.

Place to Live Downtown ► 1. The Can Plant Pearl Brewery, 503 Avenue A, (210) 223-8226, thecanplant.com The Can Plant Residences are a rather nice slice of urban life. Designed for SA’s urban professional by locally based apartment developer Embrey Partners Ltd., the Plant at the Pearl is located right in el corazón of the city. Just off of Josephine and Grayson Streets, their balcony views of San Antonio and the historic brewery during sunset go down smooth. The Plant holds Silver Status by the National Green Building Standard for its eco-friendly design and dwellings range from studios to one-and two-bedroom apartments. The amenities are hard to beat, as the Plant offers residents taxi boat access on the River Walk, a cyber café, an onsite pet park, and controlled-access parking with elevator entry to all floors. Plus it’s in walking distance to some of the best fine dining, cocktail lounges, and shops — the Pearl Farmers Market on Saturdays is a nice perk — that the city has to offer.

But remember to act like you own the place. If things have gotten desperate, take the lost tourist approach. But why stop at the bathroom? The Grand Hyatt also has one of the best roof top pools in town, and after the potty, it’s just an elevator ride away. Not that we’re advocating grifting your way into the lap of luxury … but it wouldn’t be the first time.

Only the Alamo rivals the Tower of the Americas as San Antonio’s most recognizable symbol. The 750-foot-tall tower (the city’s tallest) features the revolving Chart House restaurant (complete with a solid international selection of wines), the $8.95-$10.95 Observation Deck (children under 3 enter free), and the 4D Theater Ride (included in the tower ticket, it features scenes about life in Texas). It may not be as tall and fancy as the Eiffel Tower, but, dammit, it’s our tower, and definitely one of the places you need to visit before you die.

Mayor Phil Hardberger (2005-2009) was a popular mayor, but he’ll be forever immortalized by the beautiful park that bears his name, a vast area of virtually untouched land in the middle of the city. Its playground for children ages two to 12 boasts an 80-slot parking lot, swings, a Tsunami slide, a carousel, a doublearch climber, rock and ride, an Intensity Atomic Fitness Play Complex, and a Circuit Play Kids Fitness Course.

MOON BLOCK PARTY TOUR MUSIC

A mobile extension of the trippy festivals organized by SoCal’s Moon Block Party, the inaugural Moon Block Party Tour brings a mind-expanding lineup to town en route to the 6th-annual Austin PsychFest. “Pop-loving, feedback-chasing dropouts” Alexander Ahmadi and Derek Cowart, of the “garage-trance” quartet Cosmonauts, cite polo shirts and MDMA as inspirations for their 21st-century take on drug-addled ’60s grooves. The duo JJUUJJUU blossomed from a sonic experiment into a “telepathic dialogue.” Twangy L.A. psych-rockers Blackfeet Braves chart a “psychedelic excursion” into the unknown with songs like “Mystic Rabbit.” And with a nod to the Velvet Underground, Australia’s Ride Into the Sun blend up an aural cocktail of “slowburning psychedelic shoegaze-rock.” $5, 8pm, Limelight, 2718 N St. Mary’s, (210) 735-7775, thelimelightsa.com. — Bryan Rindfuss

MOTHER FALCON MUSIC

Some classes take exams, others presentations. The assignment for the students in UTSA’s Music Marketing program? Throw a concert. The Austinbased, 18-member orchestral indie outfit Mother Falcon’s size may visually recall the small mob mentality of the Polyphonic Spree, but the band hews more closely to the orchestral sweep of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and the chamber pop of Arcade Fire. Wednesday’s show marks the band’s first SA performance. “It’s cool that this is a passion project, that these are students who really want to do a great job and put on something amazing,” said Mother Falcon’s Matt Puckett. “It’s very different from some guy on 6th Street who books shows seven nights a week.” With Ernie Halter, a Los Angeles’ singersongwriter with a penchant for Jason Mraz-inflected coffee-house crooning. $15, 8pm, UTSA Arts Recital Hall, One UTSA Circle, (210) 458-4354, music.utsa. edu. — J.D. FIESTA GARTENFEST FIESTA

Preserving German song, music, and language since 1867, the Beethoven Maennerchor has earned its reputation as “the oldest active singing society in Texas.” Home to the men’s choir along with the Damenchor, and Kinderchor (ages 4-15), Beethoven Halle und Garten puts a German spin on Fiesta with Gartenfest, a three-day shindig serving up “a little polka, a little beer, a little bratwurst, and lots of cheer.” As if German food and beer, live music by the Beethoven’s 50-piece Concert Band, and good old-fashioned gemuetlichkeit (warm cordiality) isn’t enough of a draw, Gartenfest promises brushes with Fiesta Royalty: Wednesday’s festivities include a visit from Rey Feo LXV Larry Benson and King Antonio XCI Steve Dutton makes an appearance on Thursday. $3-$5, 5pmmidnight Wed-Fri, Beethoven Halle und Garten, (210) 422 Pereida, (210) 222-1521, beethovenmaennerchor.com. — BR

SIESTA FEST FIESTA

The seventh annual Siesta Fest music event boasts a wildly diverse lineup over the course of three evenings. Headlining the first night of the festivities is pioneering female hip-hop outfit Salt-n-Pepa, whose rapid, sassy, and empowering rhymes have inspired generations of hip-hop fans to believe in that genre’s ability to lift up the feminine as well as the masculine. These ladies, living legends in their own right, are full of penetrating energy when they perform — a bit of a rarity these days — and paired with freestyle icon Stevie B and local rock(ers) en español, Ruido Añejo, they comprise one of the best cultural juxtapositions imaginable on a concert bill. Other noteworthy acts that will be a part of Siesta Fest include grunge heroes Bush, nu-metal group Papa Roach, and alt-rockers Oleander, among others. $10-$25 per night, 7pm, GJ Sutton State Parking Lot 2, E Commerce at Cherry, siestafest.com. – James Courtney

GIPSY KINGS MUSIC

At a time when gypsy culture is questionably poached by reality shows (most notably TLC’s My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding), the Gipsy Kings possess an authentic mystique that predates the 1987 release of their global hit “Bamboleo.” An outgrowth of the late flamenco legend José Reyes’ Francebased family band Los Reyes, Gipsy Kings — brothers Nicolas, André, Paul, Canut, and Patchai Reyes plus cousins Tonino, Jacques “Paco,” and Maurice “Diego” Baliardo (sons of Manitas de Plata, “The Picasso of the Flamenco Guitar”) — put an easy-drinking spin on modern “rumba catelana.” With a gravelly voice the Los Angeles Times once described as “breathtakingly emotive,” Nicolas leads the band’s unmistakable originals and brave reinventions of untouchable classics like “Volare,” “Hotel California,” and “My Way.” $45-$65, 8pm, The Majestic Theatre, 224 E Houston, (210) 226-3333, majesticempire.com. — BR

CAITLIN ROSE MUSIC

Indie-country songstress Caitlin Rose comes to Limelight supporting her painstakingly gorgeous third album The Stand In. Rose’s momentum is rising sharply on the merits of her beautiful voice and classic-meets-contemporary take on everything in the Americana spectrum – from blues and jazz to folk and country. Hers is a voice and a style that, in great part, hearken back to country icons like Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and even Patsy Cline. Her clever, story-telling lyrics further Rose’s appeal. If the first warmth of spring has you thinking a tad bit deeper about life and love, this just might be the perfect show to accompany your ruminations. And if you feel like boot scootin’ — well, there should be plenty of that to go around, too. A match made in heaven, Rose is joined on this excellent bill by local folk dynamo Nicolette Good and AM country purist Daniel Romano. $8-$10, 9pm, Limelight, 2718 St Mary’s, ticketfly.com. – JC

After a proudly funky parade representing more than 60 organizations and businesses (including Cornyation, Bexar County Roller Girls, and the San Antonio Bellydance Association), the fair fills the neighborhood’s tree-lined streets with live music (ranging from the synthpop of Hyperbubble to the Tex-Mex rock of the Krayolas), a Kid’s Kingdom, 200plus vendors offering ceramics, folk art, and jewelry, plus an eclectic assortment of food and drinks available for purchase from The Cove, Mustafa, Tapa Tapa, and more. $10, 9:30am-6pm, King William; for a map and entertainment schedule, visit kwfair.org. — BR

LUCHA LIBRE USA WRESTLING

F

SA is one of nine cities courted by Lucha Libre USA, an English-language remix of Mexican “free wrestling” explored in the documentary Behind the Mask. Marrying “extraordinary acrobatics with flamboyant characters and outlandish story lines,” LLUSA takes the sport to campy new heights with a cast comprising manufactured villains (exemplified by anti-immigration thug RJ Brewer, alleged son of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer), industry studs such as WWE alum/telenovela star Mark Jindrak (aka Marco Corleone), “Chicastars” like Tigresa Caliente, and a “mini-division” ruled by the diabolical Pequeño Halloween. Encouraging crowd interaction with prizes for “best sign” and “loudest fan,” the troupe’s United We Stand Tour pits “Latin Liberators” Blue Demon Jr. and Solar against Brewer and his loathsome group “The Right.” $18-$78, 6:30pm, Alamodome, 100 Montana, (800) 7453000, luchalibreusa.com. — BR

2013 Fiesta Blues Heritage Series feat. Zac Harmon

Jackson, Mississippi-born Zac Harmon can go toe-to-toe with any Delta blues cat on earth, but it’s his voice that really makes the difference. Harmon can effortlessly go from smooth R&B crooner to smoky, rough wailer (literally, as he incorporates reggae elements as well), and is always backed by a solid band that keeps the groove moving. At 4:30 p.m. he’ll be headlining the annual Fiesta Blues Heritage fundraiser organized by the San Antonio Blues Society, which will also present the winners of this year’s Sam Baird Scholarship, encouraging young musicians since 2008. The music starts at noon with The After Midnight Blues Band with Ginger Pickett, followed by The Palacios Brothers, and Larry Trub & Perfecto Deluxe (with Sauce González, Al Gómez, and Henry Rivas from the West Side Horns). $12-$15, noon-6pm, Sunset Station, 1174 E Commerce, frontgatetickets.com. — Enrique Lopetegui

Cornyation

It’s once again our favorite time of year, when we take what is most sacred and dear and mercilessly mock it. That’s right, Cornyation, “the raunchiest, cheapest event of Fiesta” is upon us. April 2325 at the Empire Theater you will be able to take part in the communal joy of poking fun at Fiesta’s Coronation, politics, and celebrities, a San Antonio tradition since 1951. This year, former Congressman Charlie Gonzalez reigns over the Court of the 2nd Coming as King Anchovy XLVIII. To date, Cornyation has donated $1.3 million to several local charities such as the SAAF (San Antonio Aids Foundation) and Beat AIDS (Black Effort Against the Threat of AIDS). As with any good roast it’s bound to get raunchy, so leave the kids at home. $22.95-$116.20 at ticketmaster.com, 7:30pm & 10pm Wed-Thu, Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, 226 N St. Mary’s, (210) 226-3333, fiestacornyation.org. — Joshua Pedrick

“Real/Surreal: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art” Oppositional currents in 20th-century art converge in “Real/Surreal,” an exhibition assembling works by Edward Hopper, Man Ray, Joseph Cornell, Yves Tanguy, Charles Burchfield, Paul Cadmus, Philip Guston, Ben Shahn, Charles Sheeler, George Tooker, and Andrew Wyeth. $10-$15 (free from 4-9pm Thursday), 10am-4pm Wednesday, 10am-9pm Thursday, 10am-4pm Friday, 10am5pm Saturday, noon-5pm Sunday, 10am-4pm Tuesday; McNay Art Museum, 6000 N New Braunfels, San Antonio, (210) 824-5368.

FIESTA

A Day in Old Mexico & Charreada Produced by the Asociación de Charros de San Antonio, “A Day in Old Mexico” features Mexican food and drinks, mariachis, ballet folklórico, and the beloved escaramuza — young women wearing ranchera dresses and executing precision movements while riding sidesaddle. $3-$15, 1-6pm Sunday; Charro Ranch, 6126 Padre, San Antonio, (210) 532-0693. A Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA) Join the herd of 80,000 as one of Fiesta’s most anticipated events takes over La Villita with 240 elaborately decorated food and drink booths and nonstop entertainment on more than a dozen stages representing the Alamo City’s diverse cultures and customs in 15 heritage-themed areas. Billed as “the largest historic preservation festival in the nation,” NIOSA supports the restoration of historic properties through the the San Antonio Conservation Society’s preservation, education, and research programs. $10-$12, 5:30-10:30pm WednesdayFriday; La Villita, 418 Villita, San Antonio, (210) 207-8610. Alamo City Fiesta Rugby Tournament The Alamo City Rugby Football Club celebrates its 30th anniversary with a tournament offering an “Old Boys” division (with players ranging from 35 to 62), a college division (representing both UTSA and St. Mary’s University), and a division for high school teams (for players under 19). The free event offers fun for the whole family, including live entertainment, contests, and a San Antonio Gaelic Athletic Association exhibition match complete with Celtic Bagpipers. Free, 9am Saturday; Brooks Field Park, 3606 Goliad, San Antonio. Battle of Flowers Parade The Grande Dame of Fiesta San Antonio, the Battle of Flowers Parade is the only parade in the nation produced entirely by women. Originating in April 1891 to honor the men of the Alamo and those that fought for Texas independence at the Battle of San Jacinto, the parade has evolved from a horse-drawn affair to a flower-covered extravaganza featuring spectacular floats with participants adorned in colorful costumes, giant

helium balloons, antique cars, pep squads, cheerleaders, marching bands, and uniformed military cavalcades. Grand Marshaled by actor Armie Hammer (joined by his wife, actor/journalist Elizabeth Chambers), this year’s parade is themed “Celebrations.” $12-$25, 11:30-4pm Friday; Broadway at Josephine through downtown to Martin at Santa Rosa. Coronation of the Queen of The Order of the Alamo Founded by San Antonio businessmen and community leaders in 1909, The Order of the Alamo celebrates Texas’ struggle for independence from Mexico. The group chose its first Queen that year and staged her coronation at the Old Beethoven Hall. Considered one of the most magnificent and unusual events of its kind in the country, the Coronation of the Queen of The Order of the Alamo features a spectacularly set stage, elaborate dresses and trains spangled with glittering beads, crystals and jewels, and a symphony orchestra performing as visiting and in-town Duchesses make their full-court bows at “The Court of the Nature’s Tapestry,” followed by the presentation of Her Royal Highness the Princess and the Coronation of Her Gracious Majesty, the Queen. $40-$60, 8-10pm Wednesday; The Majestic Theatre, 224 E Houston, San Antonio, (210) 226-3333. Fiesta de los Reyes One of Fiesta’s largest free events, Fiesta de los Reyes celebrates cherished Fiesta icon Rey Feo in a historic setting enhanced with folkloric dancers, musicians performing everything from Tejano and Latin jazz to conjunto and country, and 30 food booths offering Mexican cuisine, Cajun shrimp, burgers, aguas fresacs, funnel cakes, and other treats. Free, 10am-midnight Wednesday-Sunday; Market Square, 514 W Commerce, San Antonio, (210) 207-8600. Fiesta Flambeau Night Parade With an estimated 700,000 spectators along the streets of SA and another 1.5 million in the television viewing audience, the 2.6-mile Fiesta Flambeau is one of the largest illuminated parades in the US. Following a theme of “Celebrating San Antonio,” the 65th annual event features marching and equestrian units, musical groups, and a vanguard of ROTC and civilian patriotic organizations. Visit fiestaflambeau.org for additional information. $12-$25, 7-11pm Saturday; begins at Broadway and Josephine and ends at Santa Rosa. MissionFest On the grounds of The Queen of the Missions, MissionFest provides guests traditional Fiesta eats, a Kids’ Corner with rides and games, and live music by Flaco Jiménez, Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs, Augie Meyers, David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, Ruben Ramos, and Rick Treviño, among others. $5 (free until noon), 11am10pm Sunday; Mission San José, 6701 San Jose, San

Metric

Metric is a great band not just because of how they sound, but how they think. The Canadian band has been racking up their country’s Juno Awards for the past decade. Synthetica, their latest, and arguably their best, album, is an imaginative alt-rock trip full of hooks, groove, and the band’s gentle but biting analysis of what’s real and what’s bullshit in modern life. This rare SA appearance is part of Jack Daniel’s “Live at the Landmark” free series, but registration is closed. But don’t despair, look for the online version of this pick at sacurrent.com for details about how to win a pair of tickets (you must be 21 or older to enter). With Bad Books. Dear Mexican: I have always liked ranchera music. As of late, I have wanted to get deeper into it as far as the history, the culture and especially the songs and lyrics. The older I get, the more rancheras seem like poetry to me. Sounds cursi, I know. So what I was wondering is if you know a good book or two or website that I can read or check out? I went to my local library and they didn’t have a very good selection. And Borders or Barnes and Noble? Forget it… So por favor and gracias, if you could. – Houston Honey

Dear Wabette: Of course Borders doesn’t stock any books on rancheras — Borders doesn’t exist anymore (and borders don’t exist, period, but that’s neither ni aquí ni allá). Most research on Mexican music concentrates on corridos, our ballad form that celebrates bad men, events, and horses, but actual scholarly treatises on ranchera? Few and far between, alas — and nonexistent in English. Your best bet is José Alfredo Jiménez: Cancionero Completo, a songbook that contains all the compositions of the ranchera titan, whose hit parade makes the collected works of Gershwin, Porter, Leiber-Stoller, the Brill Building AND Woody Guthrie seem as voluminous as the output of Paper Lace. The libro also contains a great introductory essay by the late Mexican intellectual Carlos Monsiváis that puts Jiménez in his proper context. As great as Cancionero Completo is, however, don’t bother buying it: a used copy is currently priced at $54 on Amazon. com, and while the book showcases the Robert Burns-esque bravado and orgullo that was the Jiménez style, it ain’t worth that price in this day and age where you can just gather all the lyrics online. Then again, if you’re willing to buy the book, I’m more than happy to sell my copy to you: I do need to finish off the down payment on my burro…

by Gustavo Arellano

Dear Mexican: Upon first seeing me, as a two-week old baby, my aunt Estrella screamed “¡Ay, qué gringo!” But, if you gotta call me a gabacho, so be it. I do have Mexican family (through marriage), and my brother (white like me) is currently down in Mexico City courting a beautiful Mexi nugget he met while attending college in Malaga, Spain. I get along well with many Mexicans, legal and illegal, but I hate that they aren’t paying “the man” like I have to. Sure, I’m a little jealous, but I’d be all for Mexicans being awarded citizenship simply for walking over the border... as long as they paid their dues. I pay taxes that fund shit like keeping white trash from getting jobs, jobs they could get if I wasn’t already paying for them to survive on junk food, and some undocumented border-jumping beaner wasn’t there working for cheaper (and not helping me pay the dumb taxes to keep the trailer trash alive). I say assimilate, document, pay taxes and welcome. I’m writing an essay on wetbacks (fuck PC terms) and their effect on our country for better AND worse. I’ve never heard of you until I read about 30 of your emails and responses on the net today. I’d like to know what’s your opinion on the crossing over and its effect economically rather than socially? – White Sox Winner! Dear Gabacho: The only opinion I have is on your language. “Beaner”? “Border-jumping”? “Wetback?” All these insults are SO 1950s. Don’t you know the current verboten insult toward Mexicans is “illegal” or “illegal immigrant”? And as for your concern about the undocumented paying their way, dontcha worry about that: the recent proposed amnesty bill crafted by a bunch of political pendejos is more punitive than habanero salsa marching through your alimentary canal toward your culo.
