Halls Life
Introduction
University of the Arts London has 13 halls of residence across London welcoming students from over 100 different countries. With over 3300 students living in our halls of residence we’re always looking for more ways to help you mingle, feel more at home and share the incredible experiences that university life has to offer. From what we’ve heard from you guys, the Social Programme has been a great success so far in your halls with chilled events like afternoon snacks and film nights along with themed parties, exercise classes and even a trip to Amsterdam; there is always something for everyone’s individual taste.
This new magazine ‘Halls Life’ is an addition to your halls experience, bringing all 13 halls together in one place featuring stories from students, pictures of events, previews of what’s on, money saving tips and much, much more. This magazine is brought to you by the Social Reps and current students in your hall (fellow students) and your student editors Tyisha and Kris. We hope you enjoy the first edition,

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A
UAL STUDENT? UAL is a melting pot of talented creatives from around the world. To be a UAL student is to be in the presence of other amazing people. Opportunities to collaborate, create and grow in such a rich, inspiring environment with other students is what makes UAL unique!
A UAL student is a creative that will lead by example not only on an aesthetic level but also on a human empathetic level - they desire to impact and make life better. Our team and other UAL students tell you what it means to them...

International Perspective by Danwei Guan
I came to London in 2012 to study fashion design. I remember my first sight of London was exactly how I imagined it would be. It was filled with a cloudy sky and cold air. I was extremely excited about how everything looked, which was completely different to China. One thing I remember noticing was that even wild chrysanthemums were blooming a totally different petal here. To me, London is such an inspirational city. I remember the first thing that was completely alien to me was the food. I was so used to the diet of rice and having a big portion of food for every meal so it was rather surprising that my friends around me only had a very little salad for their lunch at nearly two o’clock (in China we always have lunch around 12). The alcohol drinking culture was a shock as well; going out to a bar in China is not considered a
first choice for socialising and entertainment for students. Cakes here are absolutely amazing, they are just so dense and sweet! In China they are just very fluffy and do not have enough sugar. The first year in London was all about cakes, muffins and chocolates… luckily I didn’t gain weight! I felt like a baby trying to understand and explore everything around me. London still surprises me every now and then. There is always something going on somewhere in London, I just wish I could triple the number of hours in a day and see everything. As an international student who had just turned 18 at the time, living in London alone was scary, 9611 kilometres away from home. You will realise that you are truly dependent on yourself. The language barrier was stopping

me from socialising with people, I was facing the difficulty of speaking a foreign language but also the problem of how to interact with others. I am in a city that allows me to meet such a large number of people from all backgrounds. It was overwhelming to me at the time, but now I absolutely love it. If you are an international student you probably understand my international perspective. If you’re a new student at UAL hopefully my perspective will be of help to you whilst you’re studying at university and settling in. When I look back now all the problems and worries I ever faced have faded away. This is the reason why London is so great; it makes you grow into this better person. - Danwei Guan, Alumni Glassyard Social Rep

Coolest cheap cafe/coffee shop? There is a Starbucks nearby and a Costa round the corner. There are so many restaurants there, I like going to Dishoom for great Indian food or Angel is about a 20 minute walk away and there are plenty of options there from the Breakfast Club to Five Guys. Best student friendly bar/pub? The pubs down Caledonian Road are your best bet. There is Shilibeer’s Bar and Grill housed in an industrial Victorian warehouse just round the corner, it has great food and an exciting atmosphere.

West Lucy @ The Costume Store Coolest cheap cafe/coffee shop? Costa is right outside the front door, we can sit outside where everyone is coming in and out so you normally bump into everyone or sit inside for a warm cup of tea. Best student friendly bar/pub? The pub the Castle does a discount of 15% if you show your UAL student ID. Sunny day out? There is a huge park in East Acton, great for walks and chilling out with a picnic. Rainy day in? There is a leisure park just up the road with a bowling alley, a cinema, Pizza Hut, Nandos, arcade and KFC. Money Saving Mantra? ASDA is 10 mins away, it is huge and so cheap! They have everything you could possibly want, loads of international food.
E
Sunny day out? There is Market Road Gardens which is intimate and quiet so a great place for reading and relaxing. Regents Park and Primrose Hill are just a short bus ride away.
East Annalise @ Don Gratton House
Rainy day in? Watching a film in the common room or playing pool. There is a bus which stops pretty close to the halls and that will take you very near to the British Museum which is a fantastic way to spend the day. Take the bus to Camden for some shopping perhaps.
Coolest cheap cafe/coffee shop? There is a Starbucks literally 2 minutes walk away, as well as numerous little coffee shops following along the main road.
Money Saving Mantra? Make friends with Pret staff for the occasional freebie ;)
Best student friendly bar/pub? 93 Feet East is located down the road on Brick Lane and is great for a night out; with 2 rooms which play House and RnB music it suits pretty much everyone so it’s ideal when a large group of you go out - and then you can nip to the 24 hour bagel shop on the way home. Sunny day out? If you can take a 15 minute walk (or catch a tube if you’re feeling lazy) St. Katherine’s dock is lovely in the sunshine; there are boats to look at, Tower Bridge and some lovely pubs with beer gardens if you have some money.
S
South Jasper @ Glassyard Building Coolest cheap cafe/coffee shop? There are a lot of Ethiopian cafes nearby where I usually go for tea. Best student friendly bar/pub? The Queen’s Head, 2 minute walk from the hall and has live music, reggae night etc. Sunny day out? Clapham has a nice park with tennis courts, football pitches etc. Rainy day in? Common room, work space, one of the many restaurants in Stockwell/Brixton/Clapham. Money Saving Mantra? Make sure you get a student oyster.
Super Scrimpers. Your North, East, South, West guide to the Capital.

Rainy day in? There is a bowling alley down Brick Lane, which many celebrities hang out at sometimes. Again there is a Starbucks, as well as the coffee shops, a KFC and a Burger King. Take the bus for half an hour, or the tube for around 10-15 minutes and go to Westfield Stratford for the day. Money Saving Mantra? Try to visit the big supermarket stores rather than the express ones - they have more on offer, better deals and are actually a little bit cheaper!
