Introduction

Halls Life

This term we hope those of you who joined us in September have had an amazing first term! We’d also like to welcome all of those who have joined us in halls recently.

majority of our events are free and run by students for students. The programme covers a range of events from local movie nights to trips around the world.

Living in Halls is an amazing period of time during your university life. It can push you into situations outside your comfort zone. You could already have met people who you’ll remain friends with for life, you’ll have met your future colleagues, you could even have met the next Stella McCartney or a future Turner Prize winner. Like the university, it can be a very nourishing environment to be surrounded by creatives.

As ‘Social Reps’ it’s our job to run the events in Halls and around London; we also listen to your ideas for future events or campaigns. Feel free to email us with any ideas to: social.programme@arts.ac.uk. We hope you have a fabulous spring term and enjoy the 2nd edition of Halls Life.

At UAL we are proud to host the UK’s leading and award-winning events programme. The

Post Grad Perspective

Post Grad Perspective by Amani Ghareeb Mohasseb

Coming back to the United Kingdom after being away for 2 years was very exciting. I remember looking forward to it the entire summer since the day I got accepted. I thought the first thing I would be doing after a 13-hour flight was sleep however I found myself exploring London straight away.

Living in halls has given me the opportunity to easily meet other students outside of my course with whom I always enjoy talking about anything and everything, even course related topics. It is important for a postgraduate student to have a community of support around them for their studies.

At the beginning, I had the idea that when I told people I would be studying for an MSc, they would assume I was older and boring, but the opposite happened. First of all, I am not the oldest and secondly I get invited to a lot of socials and flat parties all the time. I was surprised that there are a lot of returners and post grad students at the Costume Store and across UAL halls. Not many universities encourage returners and post graduates to live in halls.

At the end of the first term I found myself having a second family, sister, brother or simply a best friend and it does not necessarily have to be only your flatmates, it can be anyone living at your halls that you have bonded with during a flat party or even one of the events by the Social Programme, such as afternoon tea which has to be my favourite. I have two bachelor degrees and I have been to two different universities for my undergraduate studies. However, UAL has to be my favourite

by far because no matter what course you are on, you can and you do get involved in other aspects, for example arts, media and fashion. I am currently studying a post graduate course that many might not be aware is offered anywhere. It is at London College of Fashion, and is the world’s first and only MSc in Applied Psychology in Fashion. In comparison with my undergraduate studies, the relationship that you have with your tutors is different. It seems as if you are working closer with them yet under their supervision. Our course leader created a tradition that every first Thursday of the month we go to the lovely pub in front of LCF for a monthly social. We get to bond and socialise with our tutors, classmates, and even previous students. In other words we get to relax a little together which is great.

Student Union message

Issue 2 : 2016

Hello! We’re your elected, full-time student reps. All of us are UAL students on sabbatical (taking a year out) to represent you and provide the support you need. Together, we run the Students’ Union (SUARTS), an independent non-profit organisation run by students, for students. By enrolling at UAL, you’re automatically a member of SUARTS, and membership means you can join our societies and sports teams, get discounts on London living, pick up hands-on industry experience, and influence changes within your course, your college or the whole of UAL. We also run two not-for-profit cafes and the Darkroom bar, offer free academic and employment advice, facilitate the Arts Active fitness programme, and run great clubnights. When you see us, say ‘Hi’ - we’re excited to get to know you!
