Horse Association & Club News BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS

As this column is being written, our annual Christmas Party is just a few days behind us and we're still basking in the afterglow. This was our biggest and best holiday party ever, even topping the one we had last year. Our 2012 party was a major departure from ones we had held in the past, where we rented a hall and featured a potluck dinner. For years, we had cohosted the parties with the Pinckney Trail Riders Association and after much discussion, decided that a major change was in order. So, we held the party in a local restaurant and let the professionals do the cooking, had a raffle, and brought in a DJ for music and dancing. We started out planning this year's party along the same lines. We would still be holding it at RJ's Grill in Hamburg, would keep the door prizes and raffle, and would still offer the DJ and dancing. We were confident we would continue to get a good turnout (we had 80 guests last year) and everyone would have a good time. Well, what we had this year not only equaled but surpassed our 2012 party. We had over 80 guests come this year – not just “repeat customers” but some new ones. The buffet dinner served up by the restaurant's staff was every bit as delicious as last year's and was topped off by a variety of desserts donated by members of our two organizations' boards of directors. We offered an abundance of prizes for our “Christmas Story” game, also donated by the members of our boards. A door prize drawing featured a variety of very generous donations, topping last years, which will be detailed below. Then we held a 50/50 drawing and after that, the same DJ we had last year, Roger Burgdolf, cranked up the music and we had quite a few guests

hit the dance floor. A few of them were really full of energy and never stopped dancing until the music ended until after 11pm. The generosity of the businesses and individuals who donated to our door prize drawing needs to be acknowledged. We will not only list them but provide websites for them, because they are all dedicated to serving our equestrian community. We feel they deserve the patronage of members of the Brighton and Pinckney Trail Riders, and any equestrians who are in the area. 1) Our host, RJ's Grill on 36 in Hamburg, donated three gift certificates for dinners. They serve up tasty meals at modest prices, and are located near the B r i g h t o n , Pi n c k n e y, a n d Kensington Metro Park trails. (www.rjsgrillon36.com) 2) Lakeside Saddlery is located in Whitmore Lake, donated a gift certificate, and offers a full line of saddles, tack, equipment and attire. (lakesidesaddlery.com) 3) Howell Western Wear, located in downtown Howell, donated a gift certificate, and features a wide array of apparel. www.howellwesternwear.com 4) Ed Bock Feeds & Stuff, located in Pinckney, donated two gift certificates. They sell a full line of feed, supplies, tack, equipment. (edbockfeeds.com) 5) Backyard Tack, a new business located in South Lyon, is acquiring new stock daily, and donated a gift certificate. See what they have to offer at facebook.com/Backyard Tack. 6) Two members of the Brighton Trail Riders, Patti Blossom and Chris Harman, donated prizes and the president of the Pinckney Trail Riders, Sue Armstrong, donated an exquisite decorative bull whip made in Hungary. 7) A special donation came from Manchester artist Rick Finger, who paints custom pictures of horses and pets. www.refingerpaintings.com. 8) The highlight of the drawing was a very special donation by BTRA and PTRA member Mickey Dalton, who now resides in Tennessee. She and her husband Dick rent out a cabin and stalls which offer immediate access to miles of trails and is just a short drive from the Big South Fork. Four nights' lodging for four people and stalls for their horses was their generous contribution. Inquiries about their rental can be made by calling them at 931-879-9121. Well, that's about it for 2013. We wish everyone a Happy New Year and fun-filled riding in 2014. - Mark Delaney, BTRA Sec. FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOCIATION

Happy New Year Trail Riders! All of us with the Fort Custer Horse Friends would like to thank all of you who made our 2013 year a great year. All of our hard work has paid off with more improvements than any of us could have dreamed would be accomplished in such a short time. The generous donations through grants from Pfizer, the Michigan Horse Council and the DNR have enabled us to raise monies for a pavilion, finish our trailhead parking area, improve creek crossings, put picket poles in our special event area and purchase gravel and rental equipment. We would like to say a special thank you to all of you who made the time and effort to come to our two campouts in 2013. Our events were a huge success because of all of you that came and enjoyed the trails, fun, food and friends, old and new. The interest shown by all who attended has shown the need for more campout dates for 2014. When we set the 2014 calendar, look for more information on our upcoming events on the website (http://fchfa.org) Last but not least, a big thank you to our DNR for working with (26)

us to make our Park and trail system one of the nicest around! Thank you to our Park manager, Tony Trojanowski and his associates for all the help and co-operation. Please look for us at the MSU Stallion Expo in the trails room and at the Allegan 4-H Tack Sale and the Kalamazoo 4-H Tack Sale in 2014. We look forward to meeting you and giving us the opportunity to show you our trails! Stay warm and see you on the trails, Toni Strong, FCHFA Sec. MI COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING

What an exciting time to be a member of MiCMO. We held our general membership meeting and are looking forward to next year. Unfortunately we had to wish a grateful farewell to our president, Allison Bennett. She will be dearly missed and her years of dedication to MiCMO and NACMO are appreciated. Following in Allison's footprints will be our new fearless leader, Melissa Fox. Val Kadzban will continue the Vice-President position as the second year of her two year term. We thank Val for sticking with us and organizing our booth at the Lansing Stallion Expo along with all the other wonderful things she does. Sue Wright was voted in as treasurer and secretary. Barb Drake and Cindy List both stepped down from their positions and handed the reigns over to Sue. Thanks so much Barb and Cindy for giving your time and energy to MiCMO and making it such a strong family. Previously Leigh Nelson was handling the membership forms and she will continue to perform that task but will also take over as points keeper. We will miss Royla Westphal's efficiency with getting our points posted and online. We are sure that Leigh will do a wonderful job with this new responsibility. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Horse Association & Club News MiCMO, Continued

There was some great discussion about the previous year and some minor rules were changed. We welcome our junior riders and adjusted some rules to promote the junior division. As with all clubs, we were reminded of the need to respect ride managers decisions and efforts. Everyone is doing their best and volunteering their time to make our rides run smoothly. As I have stated before, if you are part of a club please find a way to support them by volunteering. It is sure to give you a new appreciation for everything they go through. In order to get together during the winter and celebrate the past year, we will be having our annual awards banquet in February. Before you know it we will be at the stallion expo and then the season will start again. Is it too early to count down the days? The ride schedule for next year is coming together nicely with several weekends between the middle of May and late October. Please look for the rides to start appearing in the events section of Saddle Up! Magazine as soon as they are confirmed. Leigh and I will be trying our luck at putting on another ride up at DbarD in Chase. Be sure mark your calendars and save a spot to try the thinking horse sport that is Competitive Mounted Orienteering. Happy Trails! Janet PROUD LAKE TRAIL RIDERS

and Jo Jandernoa presented YSTRA with our official Adopt-APark Certificate of Appreciation and our very own Adopt-A-Park sign. Come spring we will install the sign at the park entrance. Andru gave an update on the Old Pines Trail which was closed to horses and motor vehicles back in 2007 because of erosion issues. Andru has sent in a proposal to open the Pine Trail back up to horses and hikers with the understanding YSTRA will do the trail maintenance. Our request for no wheeled vehicle signs update: The YS Park is out of signs at this time but has placed an order, this will take about 3-4 months to get back. Sara Shafer, will provide some No Bike Traffic signs for us to use temporarily. Carla asked if we could make a smaller version of the Park Kiosk just for our club announcements, Andru thought that would be ok, asked to see the plans first. Also the roof needs to be replaced on the current kiosk. We would like to see more emergency information posted like better directions to the hospital and local Veterinary phone numbers. Andru said we can start using the new service road that was created last year behind the pavilion, the rails will come down in the spring so you will be able to exit these sites by way of the service road. We got approval to build a flower box and plant flowers around our sign at the camp entrance. Another project for next year is more gravel on the roads within the campground and another manure pit at the far end of the campground, Andru would like to see our plan first before approving. Andru talked about the State Management plan which has been slow getting started, might get started in 2014. This committee is tasked with reviewing each parks usage and expansion requests. FEEDING THE PREGNANT MARE: Part 3 - The Last Three Months By Dr. Eleanor Kellon, VMD Staff Veterinary Specialist for Uckele Health & Nutrition

This article is continued from the November and December issues of Saddle Up! Magazine. During the first 8 months of pregnancy, a mare may be fed like any other horse, with a balanced, high quality diet. But things are changing rapidly during the final three months of pregnancy: The mare now requires more calories, more protein, more omega 3s, and balanced vitamins and minerals, not only for the unborn foal but also to prepare for milk production.

Grass hay or pasture should be provided 'round the clock; she should never run out. If allowed to self-regulate her intake, she will likely consume 2.5 to 3.5 percent of her body weight as forage. Alfalfa hay should also be included to balance her protein needs. Alfalfa should never be fed exclusively (due to potential mineral imbalances). Strive for a 60:40 ratio of grass hay to alfalfa hay. The fetus gains 1 pound per day during these final three gestational months. Hay alone

Walker, Skip Burger. There are two open board positions this year, as Judy Struble and Simon Hernandez have chosen not to seek reelection. Laura Rittershofer has expressed an interest in one of the positions, please contact Ron Walker if you are interested in running. All officer positions will also be voted on as well by the new board members. Calendar of events 2014: Monthly Scheduled Rides: YSTRA plans on doing a monthly scheduled ride every 3rd Sunday starting in May. Ride at 9:00 am

with a pot luck at 1:00. No charge. Judged trail ride June 1st, cohosted with IHTA , more information to come. Shot Clinic April 19th at the YS horseman's camp ground with Dr. Rachelle Bennecke. Horse and Dog shots. January YSTRA Board Meeting will be held at Sam's Joint Gun Lake, meeting at 7:00 pm, come at 6 if you want to eat. Respectfully Yours, Kathy Taylor, YSTRA Secretary

will not meet all the mare's caloric needs. Furthermore, hay is missing many vitamins that would be found in living, fresh grass, likely not available during these late winter/early spring months in most of the country. A quality commercially-fortified feed designed for broodmares will meet her nutritional needs as long as it is fed according to recommended amounts. Or you can mix your own feed by offering beet pulp, hay pellets, ground flaxseeds or Chia seeds, and other whole foods, along with a comprehensive supplement that provides balanced levels of vitamins, and minerals such as copper, zinc, and manganese, as well as selenium and iodine. Attention to nutrition will help

the mare maintain strength and health in this final stage of pregnancy as well as be ready for the significant demands of milk production and nursing.

period at the canter, let your horse play, buck, and have fun, but keep it controlled! I always keep two hands on the longe line, and I watch his head and keep it flexed towards me as he plays. If the horse is at liberty, you can enjoy watching him play free. If you do this before you ride, his concentration will be improved. If you exercise your horse at any length, keep the walk in between change of direction so that he does not get too hot and sweaty. If he does sweat, take a longer time to cool him out. The longer you exercise him on the longe or at liberty, then the less time you should spend riding him. To test him to see if he is ready for you to mount up, make an abrupt sound by clapping or using your voice or stomping your feet. If he does not react by being silly, then you are ready for a good ride. After Riding If you are trailering home from a ride, blanket your horse with

• PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING™ • Building a Partnership with Your Horse

RIDING IN WINTER CONDITIONS By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 Winter is upon us, and in some parts of the country that means extreme cold with snow and/or ice. Winter conditions make riding more of a challenge, but they should not stop you from riding. If your horse is on a regular conditioning routine, you never should stop training abruptly unless your horse is injured. This is because stops and starts in conditioning can lead to ligament problems, and the cold may exacerbate problems by contributing to stiff joints. With a little preparation and extra caution, however, you should be able to at least proceed with a modified training program. Preparing the Rider When you ride in the winter, it is important to be warm but not so bulked up with clothes that you cannot move. Kerrits line of equestrian clothing offers a selection of cold weather gloves, hats, pants, shirts, and jackets that I love and that keep me warm without being bulky. If you ride with a helmet, which I highly recommend, you can purchase an ear warmer with elastic on top that is made to go under a helmet. Whatever you select to wear in the cold, it is best to dress in layers with breathable fabric against your skin. If you start your workout before the sun reaches your riding area, you may find you are dressed too warmly when it does. If you do decide to shed a layer, make sure your horse is not startled by you pulling off an article of clothing and/or throwing it over a fence. You may opt for warmer footwear than your regular riding boots. If you do, be sure that whatever footwear you select slides easily out of the stirrups. If you want to wear your regular

boots with thermal socks, you can protect the leather on the foot with a slip on rubber made for boots. Again, be sure that the rubbers slide easily out of the stirrups. Preparing the Horse You should tack up your horse as usual for cold-weather riding with a couple of exceptions. A horse will not willingly accept a cold bit so warm it up in your hands or with a warm (not hot) gel pack. Also, you may want to use a rump rug or a quarter sheet to keep your horse's muscles warm. If you normally use polo wraps and are going to be riding inside or outside on bare ground, then continue to do so. However, if you are going to be riding in snow, leg wraps will trap the snow against the horse's legs or become uneven, and they should be left off. If I am riding outside in the winter with borium on the horse's shoes, I use Professional's Choice elite boots both front and hind and Professional's Choice bell boots to protect the legs and heels. They are thick enough to give good protection, and the leg boots also offer perfect support and will not slip. A warm up session for your horse is particularly important in the winter to get his joints and muscles loose and flexible. Both longeing and liberty work are appropriate, but make sure the footing in an indoor arena does not have hard or frozen ground or the footing outdoors is free of ice and other hazards. Warm up your horse at the walk or keep him on a longe line so that he does not start out running and bucking and get cold. The trot is your best exercise gait so work in this gait the majority of time, changing direction often. After a brief

one that allows water vapor to escape. A non-breathable blanket actually will prevent drying. At the barn, it is extremely important to completely dry your horse after a workout in the cold. Have a large supply of clean towels on hand, and vigorously rub him in a circular direction to rough up his hair to allow air to flow through it. Brush the snow from his legs and pick his feet out. Dry him completely by using a blow dryer and then brushing to separate the hairs. If you do not have a blow dryer and you are going to turn the horse out, dry as thoroughly as possible with the towels and then blanket him with a breathable blanket. If it is sunny and not windy, leave the blanket off and let the sun dry him out.
