MI HORSE EXPO A SUCCESS! A Big Thank You to all our Exhibitors, Participants & Attendees! Thank you to all the vendors and exhibitors that made the 2013 MHC Michigan Horse Expo such a success. What a wonderful 30th Anniversary celebration we had! We hope you enjoyed it as well. Once again we are happy to report that many vendors reported excellent, if not record, sales again this year. Considering our economy, we feel this is outstanding. We know that people plan many major purchases at the Expo each year, and we certainly are happy to see our vendors do so well. As usual, we were completely sold out on available vendor space, and even were able to fill some last minute cancellations! Many compliments were received on our new programs this year, especially the Ranch Rodeo on Sunday afternoon. Plans are to have up to six teams participating in the 2014 Michigan Horse Expo Ranch Rodeo. Team and overall sponsorships will be available, as well as sponsorships for the Friday evening Michigan High School Rodeo. Contact the MHC if you’re interested in becoming a sponsor next year! We want to say a special thank you to all the exhibitors who contributed and/or assisted with our School and Scout programs on Friday. NEW PONY CLUBS IN 2013 The United States Pony Clubs, Inc. is pleased to welcome three new Pony Clubs in 2013. Members of the following clubs can now enjoy Pony Club activities: • Pierport Pony Club in the Great Lakes Region; Mary Fleishman, DC from Leland, MI. • Crystal Coast Pony Club in the Carolina Region; Erin Richard, DC from Stella, NC. • Northwest Arkansas Pony Club in the Midwest Region; Michael Munson, DC from Rogers, AR. Pony Club promotes teamwork, a sense of responsibility, safety, self-confidence and leadership, while teaching members riding and the care of horses. Members build upon their horsemanship by progressing through the Standards of Proficiencies and earning certifications as each level requires an increased depth of knowledge and skill. There are opportunities to compete through events such as Rallies and Championships, and to create friendships and skills that last a lifetime. The United States Pony Clubs, Inc. (Pony Club) was founded in 1954 as a nonprofit national youth organization to teach riding and horsemanship through a formal educational program. There are approximately 10,000 Pony Club members throughout the country. MASH SHOWS JOIN FIGHT Michigan Association of Speed Horses (MASH) is preparing for their most unique year in the 17 years of running completive gymkhana riding. They have teamed up with the American Cancer Society to hold competitive shows to raise money for the “Cause.” They are also offering two Trail Riding Competitions for Autism. What is Autism? Research is now looking into that question, where in the past it was just considered a brain disorder, the information available is constantly changing. One out of 50 children is in America Autistic. It is a complex disorder with many forms and causes, i n c l u d i n g g e n e f a c t o r, environmental, reactions to food and brain development. There are four times more cases now reported than in the past. There are so many variations (spectrums) of this disorder that they now have classifications 110. It is the less funded disorder probably because it is the most misunderstood. For more info, visit www.autisumspeaks.org. The Cancer movement has made great improvements in millions of people's lives. There is not a rider out there that has not been touched by the disease whether it is a friend, a family member or themselves. As with Autism, there are many forms and some are more deadly than others. It affects all ages and is heartbreaking for anyone who has it or has family members going through it. MASH wants to “Run for the Cause” and help the American Cancer Foundation help people overcome this disease. They are doing a good job now let us help them make it a GREAT job. (22)

The MASH Speed Shows have three age divisions, nine events and two novice events. They run the following events: Keg Bending, Pole Bending, Speed and Action, Keyhole, Cloverleaf, Flags and Down and Back. Also offered are the team classes, to promote friendship and teamwork, such as Two Man Relay, Tag Team, and Rescue Race. These team events are open age and designed to promote meeting new people and family involvement. Year end awards will be given to the high point winners of each division and the reserve winners. T h e C o m p e t i t i v e Tr a i l Competition will be offered twice this summer and once in the fall. There will be ten stations of rating held on the trails of Elba Equestrian Center in the morning prior to the Speed Show. In the event of a tie score, time and one station will be a decision factor. All entry fees are part of the fund raising. 20% of profit goes to the organizations, riders may use their entry fees towards tax deductions. 2013 MHC SCHOLARSHIPS Each year the Michigan Horse Council awards scholarships to three members. These scholarships may be awarded to high school seniors or any other member pursuing a degree in any field of study. These scholarships are not limited to high school seniors, but students already in college, or those who are going back to school later may also apply. The Michigan Horse Council member scholarship is in the amount of $1000. The application for the 2014 member scholarship can be found on the MHC website, after April 1st, 2013, at michiganhorsecouncil.com The 2013 Michigan Horse Council member scholarship recipients are as follows: Cassey Glumm: Cassey is a senior at Hastings High School. Next year, she will be attending Michigan State University to major in Animal Science and then plans to pursue vet school to be a large animal veterinarian. Lara Stephens-Brown: Lara Stephens-Brown is a second-year Honors student from Skandia in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan pursuing a dual degree in Biochemistry &

Molecular Biology and Animal Science at Michigan State University. She plans to go to veterinary school for equine/ large animal medicine. Theresa Schmidt: Theresa Schmid is currently a senior at Notre Dame Preparatory in Pontiac, Michigan. Though Theresa has not yet made her final decision for where she is going to college, she plans to study international relations. Michigan Horse Council also awards two scholarships, $500 each, to MIHA members. These scholarships are selected by the MIHA board, and the 2013 recipients are: Kira Brown: Kira is a student at Rockford High School. Her future plans include attending Lawrence Technological University - Biomedical Engineering Amanda Longhi: Amanda is a senior at Fowlerville High School. She plans on attending Eastern Michigan University's Honors College, hoping to pursue a career in psychology or music performance. MHC also presented two Scholarships at the State 4-H Horse Show each year. The 2012 recipients of these two $500 scholarships are: Tyler Britten: Tyler will be attending Lansing Community College through Laingsburg High school for his senior year taking heavy equipment repair and operator. Samantha Wilczewski: Samantha plans on attending either Michigan Tech or Michigan State University in the field of Chemical Engineering. Also receiving Michigan Horse Council Scholarships are: The 2013 recipient of the MHC/MSU Horse Management Scholarship Paige Bittner. Paige is from Hudsonville, Michigan. She has excelled in her program thus far and looks forward to being a lifelong "difference maker" in the

horse industry. The 2013 recipient of the MHC MSU Bachelor Degree program Scholarship is Zach Dieffenbach. Zach is a senior currently attending Michigan State University as an undergraduate student in Animal Science with a focus in Veterinary Medicine. Michigan Horse Council also presents one more MSU Scholarship, this to a veterinary medicine student, who has a focus on equine practice. At this time the 2013 recipient of this program is not available. Congratulations to all of our scholarship recipients. We look forward to your continued and future involvement in the Michigan horse industry.

MI NATIVE JOINS AHC STAFF R.J. Layher has recently joined the American Horse Council as the Director of Health and Regulatory Affairs. His responsibilities will include equine health issues, welfare issues, and state, federal and international requirements regarding the movement of horses. He will be the principal AHC contact to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “It's great to be part of an organization that understands the importance horses play in our country. I look forward to advocating on behalf of the horse industry to preserve this robust and dynamic facet of the agricultural economy that it is today,” Layher said. Mr. Layher grew up on a family farm in Southeast Michigan and graduated from Hillsdale College in 2010 with a degree in Political Economy. Before coming to Washington, he managed a Michigan State House campaign and spent time in Oklahoma, (23)

Kansas, Minnesota and the Dakotas where he worked for a c u s t o m h a r v e s t e r. M o s t recently, he was a Legislative Asst. for retired Congressman Timothy V. Open Shows in Tuscola County are offered for any open rider to participate with many age groups, class offerings and awesome awards. Most shows are run by local clubs or leaders as fundraisers for our county. Our show grounds offer a limited number of box stalls, tie stalls, bathrooms w/showers, and plenty of parking. BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS As this is being written, the MHC Horse Expo has just been held, and BTRA was there in force. For years we've hosted an exhibition table in the Trails Room and when early March was on the horizon, our annual excitement over this event began to build. Everyone in the Michigan equestrian community agrees that this is the biggest event of the year. The numerous booths and tables representing clubs and organizations, the exhibits and clinics, and the vendors all combine to get everyone excited over the upcoming riding and show season. We see old friends, meet new ones, network with other organizations, learn a little bit at the clinics, and spend a few dollars on new tack and equipment. We always stop by the Saddle Up! booth and chat with staff, and encourage visitors to the BTRA table to visit that booth, pick up complimentary copies of the magazine, and subscribe. We've pretty much finalized our schedule of events for 2013, and will be kicking off the season with an open ride and work bee in March. We get into a higher gear (or maybe “gait”?) in April with another open ride and work bee. That month is also highlighted with a competitive trail ride. This is a big organized event which draws riders from all over, and includes two days of competition and a campout. Although it's not directly hosted by BTRA , we support it wholeheartedly and always see to it that the trails are ready to go. It's organized by BTRA Board member Rose Clark, and she can be reached by email at roseclark@comcast.net.

At our annual meeting we reelected several members for our Board of Directors, and our current roster is unchanged. Patti Blossom, Sue Charleville, Rose Clark, Mark Delaney, Chris Harman, Darlene Harris, Gayle Pawl, Russ Spicer and Agnes Wallace continue to serve our organization. We'll be finalizing our roster of officers next month. Even though the temperature is in the twenties and snow is still on the ground, we're thinking spring! As soon as the weather breaks, we'll be getting our trails in shape and then climbing into the saddle. FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOCIATION Spring is almost here fellow trail riders! Soon we all will be planning our day-rides and weekend camping dates for the 2013 season. I hope all of you will try to fit our trails and events into your schedules. If you have not visited the park for a few years, you're in for a surprise. As of November 2011, our trails have been separated from the old bike trail system. We now have 15 miles of dedicated horse trails, all new trails. There are an additional 5 miles of trails that are multi-use, horses included. Our trails are well groomed, not rocky AND feature 5 creek crossings, one creek has a beautiful wooden bridge to use as an option. We have been working with our park manager on our goals for this season. These include the completion of our parking lot/ staging area and a pavilion for riders. The club, with its hard-working volunteers, has been able to get grant monies that will help to make these dreams a reality. We still have money to raise and hope to see excitement grow with more people joining FCHFA. The new SPRING campout, May 10-11-12, will be a perfect time to try out the Park. We will have 25 campsites and will be

EQUINE LADIES Dr. Mark Johnson, of Berrien Veterinarian Services, Baroda, MI, was our featured speaker at our February meeting. He handed out printed information on Equine Dentition and talked about the care of equine teeth. He also covered equine vaccines, what is really is necessary, equine deworming and diseases. He also talked on Lymes disease and Heartworms in dogs. As always there was a lively question and answer period. Dr. Johnson is a wealth of information and knowledge, everyone always enjoys his talks. By the time you read this the Michigan Horse Expo will be over and hopefully everyone will be riding. Our April 15 meeting will be held at Cindy Nimtz’s Circle C boarding and training facility. Jeff Spitzer of Niles will give another training demonstration on one of his young prospects.

Horse Association & Club News KTRA, Continued Saturday morning, wake up to the smell of a hot camp breakfast provided by KTRA and cooked by master chef, Bill Gunn. Then ride Kensington Park either alone or with friends and make sure you come back hungry, because Saturday night is our potluck and pig roast! Dinner starts at 5:00 and the band will start shortly after. This camping weekend is reasonably priced so everyone can enjoy it. Campsites are $20 per night ($40 total for the two nights) and each campsite accommodates two horses. The breakfast, potluck and pig roast is $10 per person. The entire cost for two people for a weekend would be $60. Where else can you get two meals, entertainment and all the riding you can get in for that price?! Campsites are going fast. The wonderful thing about Competitive Mounted Orienteering is that there is no special preparation you have to do so you can just come and join us for the day or a weekend. If there is a ride near your house, I highly recommend that you come and try CMO. Be sure to check out our schedule at micmo.org or the calendar of events in Saddle Up! Magazine to find the best ride for you. It was so nice to talk to everyone at the Lansing Stallion Expo. That is such a fun weekend full of shopping, learning and socializing. We talked to a lot of people who have done CMO in the past and are excited to try it again this year. It was also great to see lots of new people who have heard how much fun our sport is and they are definitely going to put it on their calendar this year. Our schedule is quickly becoming finalized with fun themes and great potlucks in the making. I even spoke to one ride manager who confessed that her clues are almost completed. I guess I better get on the ball for my ride and head out into the woods. Maybe in the next week or so I won't need snowshoes to walk the trails! Living up north is challenging during the spring while we wait for the snow to melt and feel the itch to ride despite the snow and ice. We are only a few weeks away from our first ride and I can't wait to see everyone one the trails! ~ Janet

of horse hair on your barn floor! Our banquet was a huge success and a lot of fun. I think everyone had a great time bidding on and winning prizes at the auction. The door prizes were amazing as well! It was great to see everyone and enjoy a meal and a fun evening at the same time. Thank you to everyone who renewed their membership with us that night. The membership keeps our association going and growing! Now that we will be going full force back into riding season, I want to make sure everyone has a calendar of our events. Our first event is our ever popular Poker Ride. It will be held on Saturday, May 4th probably starting with registration around 10 a.m. (rain date with be May 5th). We will be having a pot luck lunch with this event. I am not sure what people enjoy more… the ride or the lunch, it is always delicious! This will be held at the Proud Lake Staging Area. The rest of our events are as follows: Ride, June 22nd this will be our annual Mobile Confidence Course presented by Kim Ventress; July 19-21 will be a campout and ride event; August 23-25 will be a campout and ride event; and October 26th will be our annual Halloween Spooktacular event. SOCIETY On May 18th the Renaissance Equestrian Society will be celebrating our 3rd Annual Equestrians' Dream Charity Trail Ride Benefitting RES and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute at Belle Isle Park. This will be a fun, family-oriented fundraising event based around horseback riding that will raise money for two great community organiz-ations based in Southeast Michigan. Horse owners from all around the Midwest are invited to see the beauty of one of Detroit's true gems - Belle Isle Park. WEST MI APPALOOSA REG. The calendar says it's spring, but it sure has been slow getting here this year. Foals are arriving and our first one is by Choc Full of Chips, a lovely colored filly. Best Farms has three new colts, two of which are colored and one has characteristics. The WMAR website has undergone some renovations and updates. The 2013 show schedule is on there along with forms for the Open Horse Incentive Program, Membership Applications and our showbills. Bobbie's been having fun learning how to create pdf files! At the MApHA Spring show, the WMAR will be selling raffle tickets for a free stall at your choice of either the WMAR show at Mason or the WMAR show at Centreville. Look up a board member at the show for more information. Our June 1-2 show is back at the Ingham County Fairgrounds in Mason with three judges counting as four sets of points while our second show will be July 13-14 at the Centreville Fairgrounds with two judges. The Centreville show will also have WMAR points doubled. We're looking forward to showing at this newly updated facility. We will also be holding a potluck at this show. Old Business: YSTRA web site committee, nothing to report. Trail Assignments, Ron asked the members who had volunteered for tail assignments if they wanted to keep their section of trail, all agreed to keep their section of trail. Each volunteer has a section of trail they agree to keep clear during the summer and to let Ron or Tom know if there are trees that need to be cut. Stallion Expo Report: Kathy Taylor reported we had a large number of people stopping by our table, a lot of 'new' trail riders looking for places to ride. We signed up 3 new members. The MHC had the grant money ceremony and pictures taken with a representative from each of the clubs who received grant money from MHC last year. This money goes to horse trail improvements. Ron gave a report from the MRPA, Michigan Recreation and Parks Assoc. trails summit which Ron Walker and Dick Smith attended. Discussions about linking trails and making each home a trail head. Enhance partnerships with other trail groups, the Adopt-A-Trail program and trail towns. They also have a website with tool kits to help clubs with their programs. The summit was geared more toward multipurpose trails. Ron had a map of the KalHaven horse trail which he shared. Ron asked for volunteers for the March 23rd bike race which runs on Shaw and Sager Rd. need lookouts. For this Rick Plite of the Barry-Roubaix bike race will donate $200 to YSTRA. New Business: Several of our members will be attend a chain saw class given by the Back Country Horsemen April 13. Members attending will then be certified.

Adopt-A-Park: There was a poll and discussion regarding this agreement. Tom Chaffee made the motion to accept this agreement, Todd Peters 2nd it was voted on and approved 140. Ron will fill out the paper work and send to Andru. Workbee March 16, 2013 at 9 a.m. to set poles and fire rings and general cleanup. Andru reported a broken door on one of the outhouses needed fixing. Todd Peters made some suggests for group activities. Doing a group camp-out at Out Back Guest Ranch, Stanwood, MI June 14-16th. regain your balance before you continue on in the gait that you are trying to improve. The trot can be particularly hard to ride without stirrups so take your time and build up to riding for longer periods without stirrups. When you pick up your stirrups, you will be surprised that they may feel too short (and you actually may have to lengthen your stirrups). Try to achieve that relaxed leg feeling you achieved without stirrups and try to duplicate that when your feet are in the stirrups. Follow the Motion with Your Hips Your hips move when you ride, and, ideally, they should move forward and backward with the rhythmic motion of the horse. If not, you will move up and down, causing you to bounce uncomfortably in the saddle. Comfort and confidence are achieved when you are in a correct and balanced position and are sitting on your seat bones. In this position, your hips will be slightly tilted forward and they can move freely forward and

Extra time spent now on mastering this riding essential will save you time in the future. Even though our goal is a solid seat, correct position in the saddle actually begins with proper upper body position. Last month, I gave you several tips and exercises to help you achieve a proper upper body position. I now want to give you some tips and exercises for the lower body. Finding Your Seat Bones It is easier to first find your seat bones in a chair because a chair is harder than a horse and your legs are not spread as wide as when you are sitting on a horse. Sit forward in the chair with both feet flat on the ground and with your knees bent. Sit with shoulders facing forward, in line with your hips, and with your back straight. In this position, you should be able easily to feel your seat bones, the two prominent bones at the bottom of your hip joints. Once you have found your seat bones, lean forward slightly. You should not be able to feel them at all now because you are sitting on your crotch instead of your seat bones. This is a common problem with riders who are tilted forward in the saddle. When you ride on your crotch instead of your seat bones, you start to grip with your legs or stiffen your upper body because you are immediately off balance in this position. Riding too far forward (sitting on your crotch) or riding too far back (sitting on your tail bone) is not only uncomfortable but it also seriously challenges your balance. This is because you will bounce in either position. If you feel yourself bouncing in the saddle, first check to see if you are leaning too far forward. Bring your shoulders back so that you are sitting up straight, and you

will find this minimizes or eliminates the bouncing. When you are sitting up straight and centered on your seat bones, you are able to relax both your upper and lower body and be balanced. After you have found your seat bones while sitting in the chair, find them while sitting in your saddle mounted on your horse. Once you recognize the correct position in the saddle, lean forwards and then backwards slightly and notice how you are off balance as soon as you are not sitting on your seat bones. Riding Without Stirrups To achieve and maintain a solid, deep seat, your legs must be relaxed and without any tension at all times. Many riders tend to try and balance themselves by pressing their weight down into the stirrups or by gripping with their legs. When you push down into the stirrups, you are actually pushing your body up out of the saddle. If you are gripping with your thighs, knees and/or calves, this tension also will bring your seat up out of the saddle. It also usually makes you bounce more. One of the best exercises to help you sit deeply and balanced in the saddle at all times is riding without stirrups. Start this exercise at a walk and in an enclosed area. Ride in circles, serpentines, and curving patterns rather than along the fence. Start our riding in a straight line, and then ride any type of figure you want before coming back to a straight line again. Riding a curved figure rather than a straight line challenges your balance and makes you use your aids to control your horse. This exercise can be done at any gait you feel comfortable with, but it should be done in short segments (as should any exercises involving circles and figures). If you have a hard time maintaining your balance, always go back down to a slower gait and

backward with the motion of the horse. Not only does this make for a smoother ride for you, but it makes things much more comfortable for the horse and allows him to relax his back and use his hind legs better. It is easiest to follow the horse's natural forward and backward motion at either the walk or canter. Start learning to follow this motion at the extended walk, and move on to the canter once you feel in rhythm with the horse. The trot is a two-beat, diagonal gait which makes the motion seem like it is up and down, but the forward and backward motion is still there. It is simply quicker and harder to follow with your hips. Practice following the horse's motion at the trot in short segments. If you continue to bounce a lot, go back to practicing at the trot without stirrups and concentrate on the forward and backward motion of the horse. If you need an added measure of security, hold on to the front of the saddle to keep you deep in the saddle and on your seat bones.

the rider to relax. But fear is not the only enemy of relaxation. Physical pain in either the rider or the horse can make it hard to keep muscles soft and relaxed while working them. Saddle fit, for example, can be the culprit when rider or horse has relaxation issues. A rider may have the best seat in the world but if the saddle does not fit her because it is too wide or too narrow for her hips, the discomfort will affect the rider’s ability to relax. If the stirrups hang in the wrong position the rider will have balance problems (and that ‘off balance’ feeling in itself can feed a rider ’s fear—everything is related). The same is true from the horse’s side of the equation. The horse cannot work with relaxation if the saddle rubs or pinches uncomfortably. A saddle that fits both horse and rider perfectly can seem like the Holy Grail. And budgets affect riders’ choices. But the right saddle is worth the search. Borrow saddles and try as many as you can. Notice how each affects your riding and your horse’s ability to relax and move freely. Some instructors have saddle preferences, especially for students who show. Never, however, be pressured to buy a particular type or brand of saddle if it makes you or your horse uncomfortable. The saddle that is perfect for one horse and rider may be a really bad choice for another. One of the reasons relaxation sits at the base of the riding and training trees is that it is the first element you must establish each time you work with your horse. Until both horse and rider have achieved a point of relaxation in body and mind in their pre-ride interactions and warm up, any subsequent work will be inconsistent or inaccurate. Relaxation does not mean slopping around on a loose rein on an inattentive horse. It means

Head, Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre We discuss each skill level on the riding and training trees as though we master each separately, one after another, in a linear progression. The reality is that these skills are interrelated. You cannot FULLY master an individual skill without relying to some degree on the others. This complexity is particularly true of rhythm and relaxation, the basic skills required for any riding or training program. Rhythm and relaxation are the first two skills a horse in training must master. Relaxation is the first thing the rider in training must master. Mastering both often presents instructors and riders with a chicken and egg conundrum. If rhythm or relaxation is missing, what is the problem? Is the horse’s rhythm off because of a stiff joint or are the rider’s stiff joints blocking the horse? Is the rider tense and uncomfortable because the horse acts spooky or is the horse spooky because the rider’s bracing and gripping makes him uncomfortable? We start beginning riders on golden oldie school horses for a reason. A reliable, predictable horse allows a rider to relax so he or she can concentrate on developing balance and feeling the horse’s motion without any mental anxiety to create muscle tension. Without balance, the rider cannot relax because she will constantly be gripping and grabbing to stay on the horse. If a rider holds tension anywhere in her body, the horse cannot relax. For example, the horse will lock muscles in the neck and jaw if the rider uses the reins to balance. And here’s that chicken and egg thing again. As the rider learns to balance correctly, follow the motion of the horse,

and coordinate aids, her ability to stay relaxed, even when the horse is not, increases. Along the way up the riding tree, mastering relaxation is always a work in progress. The riding and training trees outline physical skills riders and horses need to master. Just as important, however, is the emotional skill of mastering fear. Fear is not necessarily a bad thing. It can be a useful tool in making choices. What we don’t want is a level of fear that overrides our ability to stay cool and calm in the moment. Mastering fear is essential to mastering relaxation. We master fear the same interrelated way we learn physical riding skills. We start on a quiet school horse with rhythmic gaits until we have basic mastery of balance and following the horse’s movement. Then we continue to improve those skills and our confidence in them by move on to progressively more challenging mounts. We move on from that quiet, dependable horse to those that may be taller or shorter, wider or thinner, have quicker gaits or a bit fizzier personality. A good instructor helps students progress incrementally so that they develop both a solid seat and emotional confidence. When a scary situation develops, the goal is to acknowledge in your mind that you feel fear but to avoid any physical reaction that communicates that fear to the horse. In other words, “Never let them see you sweat.” Mastering this emotional level of riding takes lots of time riding many different horses. Certainly a fearful, anxious horse makes it more difficult for

mentally calm with the muscles in a state of looseness and ‘working tension.’ It may sound like an oxymoron to say that we want the horse to work with muscles that are both relaxed and held in tension, but that is what an athletic horse does. Working muscles tense and relax repeatedly as they move the horse’s joints through their range of motion. We want the feel of rhythmic tensing and releasing, tensing and releasing. If the horse tenses a muscle then holds that tension rather than releasing immediately it, he has lost relaxation and he will lose his rhythm, too. Think of the feel the horse gives as he spooks compared to the feel of a horse trotting or jogging beneath you with relaxed poll, jaw, neck and back. As horses and riders move up the training and riding trees, both must master the feel of working with muscles held in ‘relaxed tension’ in the sense that they are working elastically without being locked or rigid. The bottom line is that we, as riders, are responsible for establishing and maintaining rhythm and relaxation in our relationship with the horse. This demands a great deal mentally, physically and emotionally. Instead of thinking about learning riding skills in a linear fashion, it may help to think of mastering them in a progressive upward spiral. You learn to ride with relaxation and balance on one horse with particular way of moving and a particular mental outlook. You move to another horse and find yourself ‘relearning’ those same skills because this new horse’s way of moving is different in another way. The next horse challenges your mental confidence because he is a little more unpredictable. Like life, learning to ride is a journey. Challenge yourself incrementally to build your physical skills and emotional confidence to the point where you can ride any horse without sweating. Enjoy the journey! WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM
