ALL STAR REINING STAKES The All Star Reining Stakes is the culmination of the work of Vincienzo Santos, Shannon Rafacz and Chris Wiley, reining professionals who were looking for a way to celebrate the industry and the backbone of the sport: the stallions, stallion owners and the breeders.

No Matter What
By Rachel Weathers
Horses I remember looking at the stunning creatures thinking how tall and intimidating they were When I went to my grandmother's barn, she would put me on top of her horse, a flea-bitten gray gelding, Gus The feeling of his warm back underneath me, and I wasn’t afraid anymore. I have always loved horses ever since I was eight years old, no matter what. It has taken me seven years to get back to that feeling
I had my first riding lesson after trying every sport there possibly could be Back walkover, sidestroke, backhand serve, spike Nope I started by taking a couple of lessons at a small hole-in-the-wall with tons of lesson ponies and a huge lesson program for beginners In some ways, the place resembled a junkyard with broken equipment lying around. Didn’t matter. All I cared about was when it was my turn to get to make Snickers, the lesson pony, trot around in the group lesson.
A year goes by, taking lesson after lesson there. My mother saw my big smiles and knew I wanted to lease Snickers so I could start showing Sure enough, Mom made that happen I continued showing and kept going to show after show with Snickers It was just a local showground, nothing fancy; but, getting out of the car with my pigtails braided with bright pink show bows, I was all excited: walking up to Snickers tied to the trailer eating her hay; brushing her paint coat till it became shiny
Six months later, It was time for me to get a horse of my own I remember my mother telling me, then, she was not going to buy me a horse unless I was dedicated Money was one of Mom’s biggest worries though That meant we would have a lower budget, but I didn’t care. All I wanted was a horse of my own to love and care for and show Especially show.
Penny was about 15.1 hands, a “hony.” She just missed the pony height by three inches With her copper chestnut coat, you probably don’t even need to ask why she was called Penny We gave her the show name “ Penny’s from Heaven” from an old pop song “Pennies from Heaven ” It made sense. At around $5,000, she was hardly the fancy flashy hunter type you would see in the show ring We started to work with Penny at a new barn, but she was extremely inexperienced, “ green ” But, I knew this was what I had to work with. We had to make do.
Sweet and sassy, every time Penny went over the jump she had the cutest tail flick After hours of lessons and time in the show ring, Penny started to get the hang of it. She was never the judge's first pick, but after a while, she started to ribbon at the local shows - blue, red, yellow, and best of all tricolors, meaning champion. When I wanted to start doing the rated shows, my mother told me that I had to accept Penny not being competitive at that level. I was ok with that, but it was very hard to see my barn friends moving up in the ranks and there I was, still in the same division
Mom always would cheer me on no matter how badly I did Penny was clearly not going to be my lifelong equine partner, so we started looking for a pony that was a little bit fancier and would suit me better. Knowing that we still had a limited price range, Mom still wanted to see me happy in the sport I loved Once again she made it work After successfully showing Oliver, a little bay, It was time for me to get a “real horse ” I was getting too big for a pony. It was like me on my little sister's tricycle with my legs dragging on the ground
Five barns, five trainers, three horses, thousands of dollars on horses and shows later, now Kanisso and George I have had Kanisso for about three years. His eyes are sunken, and he has gray hairs on his back Soon he’ll retire, George, my new young hunter, has a sharp eye and a bright shiny bay coat His black mane looks like a crazy mohawk Last June, I took him over a fence and crashed through it I ended up with just a scrape on my face, but since that “ whack” I heard, George has been rehabbing with an injured leg. I’m now just taking it slowly with both horses. They need time, care, and love No shows for a while
Seeing my grandmother's joy hand-grazing Kanisso reminds me that taking care of and loving the horse is what it is all about. My mom never forgets to bring Kanisso his bananas and George his apples It makes her happyand me too.
