Ann Cole Training Center

“My gift from God is to help people get started with horses. I love the beginners who need that foundation, so that they can go on and ride in different disciplines. Without a solid foundation, I don't think you can do anything well. Without a foundation, a horse cannot go on either,” said Ann Cole while reflecting on her career with horses and people.

Ann was born to teach. Her love for horses and teaching began at the age of 2 when her dad bought a quarter horse and started taking lessons. Ann tagged along to watch and learn, and on her ninth birthday, her parents bought her a pony named Trigger.

She said, “I rode and rode, and we did a lot of 4-H things around St. Joe County and South Bend. It was a wonderful way to learn about horses through a fun, safe environment. Lots of good families mentored us through 4-H.”

Coming from a family of 6 kids, all who rode and did 4-H, middle child Ann was the only one to continue her love of horses.

As her dad got more involved, he tried jumping and taught Ann what he knew She said, “We did a lot of trail riding down the back roads of Granger, Indiana. It was a fun way to be a kid.”

She started teaching horseback riding to her neighbors and to anybody who wanted help. Ann said, “We had a farm with 10-15 horses at any one time for mostly just our family. A couple of neighbors also used our barn. When I was 14, my aunt's 5 kids wanted lessons. By the end of that year, I had 25 students of my own.”

When Ann turned 16, she started working for local horse trainer Ken Ecker of Clay View Farm. She rode and taught both English and Western. Ann continued working for trainers and got involved with race horses. She fed around 100 quarter horses each day After high school, Ann went to college for a couple of years but missed the horse world. She came home and started working for the same trainer.

After a time, she wanted to start her own business. At the age of 21, she rented a barn, some horses, and a tractor.

As the years passed, Ann built her own barn, got married, had 2 boys and continued teaching and training. Her husband, also a horse trainer, has always been supportive. Before retiring, he started colts and participated in barrel racing Their combined breed of choice has always been quarter horses.

Her current facility in Edwardsburg, Michigan houses 14 stalls on 8 acres. All the horses are out during the day and in at night.

When selecting a school horse Ann prefers horses aged 12 and up. The farm currently keeps 19 horses who are mostly school horses along with a few boarders and their private stock.

Ann said, “School horses have to be safe and well trained. When they join the program, some enjoy it and some do not. If they are unhappy, we find a different job for them. Some like it for a while, and maybe burn out and don't want to do it anymore. We respect that. We find them new owners.”

There are around 70 families who take advantage of Ann's training The varied programs include “Mom and Me” lessons for pre-

school kids, birthday parties, group lessons, clinics, and camps. Ann employs several trainers to give lessons and take kids to horse competitions in the summer

Ann gives very few private lessons, specializing in mostly group lessons of 6 in classes designed for beginners and up. All ages are involved and some stay with horses and have gone on to train and show and even establish their own horse businesses.

Camps run for 4 days from 9am-3pm and include ages 6-16 split into groups by age and skill level.

The farm holds a roping clinic every year with heading and heeling steer roping led by employee Chuck Davis who is also a steer roper

The training center is never idle with lessons given Monday through Friday and birthday parties and a variety of events on the weekends.

There is a special Saturday program called “At the Barn” for lesson kids where they can work, play, and ride in addition to their weekly lessons. Most of the kids in the program do not own horses, and they don't get to ride often as they like.

Ann is a firm believer in being self-supporting and making a living in the horse industry. She said, “Horses are an expensive hobby. To take very good care of our facility and our horses takes a team of people. I have 12 employees, teachers, assistant teachers, and people that come in and feed and take care of the stalls.”

One of the industry's biggest challenges is keeping employees. Ann has a lot of part-time employees and a lot of different people to deal with and train. She said, “This barn could be run with 5-6 full time employees, but I've had to adapt to the changing times. I have a good team of mostly part-time employees. I have a lot of good teenagers who have quality, integrity, and a love of horses and kids.”

One of her employees chimed in during the interview saying, “One of the first names anyone hears in the horse industry is Ann Cole Training.”

Ann said, “I'm right brained and have a big heart. I have to go to the other side and make a living and take care of our facility and our horses.”

Several years ago, to help with her business practice, Ann joined an online course given by a dressage rider Karen Rohr from Ocala, Florida. This networking opportunity has provided Ann

HTTPS://SADDLEUPMAG.COM/ (18) APRIL 2024 • C & C PUBLISHING, INC. ©2024

with valuable contacts with all kinds of disciplines. She said, “We have learned to help each other and to become more sustainable. Education is the key.” The course meets a couple of times a year, and there's always something new in the curriculum.

Ann does not believe in discounting her services and continues to have a flourishing business mostly by word-of-mouth. She said, “We deal with a lot of people, who don't own horses and don't get to be around them. Some kids have never gotten dirty in their lives and never worked hard. I like to create an atmo-sphere where those kids can get dirty carrying buckets of water and hay.”

She has tapped into the love of horses. Ann said, “There's always little girls that love horses. The horse is a spiritual being that people are very attracted to, and they are also healing.”

Ann's barn is heated. She said, “Having a heated barn is awesome and amazing. The climate is so cold. Parents can come in and watch their kids ride and be warm. The horses, riders, and instructors are warm.”

Her teachers are really strong and confident, and parents do not interfere in lessons. One of her former students Zoey Scott aged 22 is a teacher and trains horses and give lessons. She also takes kids to horse shows and is the head coach for the Edwardsburg Equestrian Team. Zoey also trains dog obedience and agility

Recognizing that all horse people are super-busy, Ann said, “One of the sad things is that we don't network with people in our areas. I have a few that I communicate with but not on a regular basis. We're not in competition, and we all have different interests. One sends me children, and I send her someone who might be ready to jump because that's what she does. I get them ready.”

Ann never stops learning herself Currently, she is working on Liberty Training with one of her horses and continues to trail ride on the weekends in Russ Forest, in Cassopolis, and all other state parks in Indiana and Michigan.

Her advice to someone getting started in horses: get educated, spend money on education.

At age 65, Ann said, “My role has shifted. I can now provide young, passionate people with jobs in an atmosphere where

they get to expand on their learning and help others get started in horses. Some students stay for 12 plus years with me. There are a lot of 4-H and ranch horses in this area with a focus on reining.”

Ann said, “This facility is a barn where people can come to be in a safe place, a community where they can enjoy the horse without being judged, or forced and to let their journey of horsemanship go in any direction they want it to go. I want people to have a cup of coffee and relax. I'll keep doing this as long as I can do what I love.”

6 Principles To Better Horsemanship

While doing clinics at the Equifest of Kansas, I paused to check out the weekly Ty Evans newsletter. I'm glad I did. Ty posted a list of 6 Principles of a High-Performance Mindset, gleaned from Justin Su'a, a Mental Performance Coach for elite athletes.

Here is what Ty posted:

1. Never be too good to get better

2. Do what you do on purpose, with purpose.

3. Little by little, a little becomes a lot.

4. Focus on the process, not the results.

5. Embrace the boredom of consistency

6. Learn from failure; learn from success.

These 41 words, forming six ideas, stayed with me through the entire expo. And they kept me company on the way home. Somewhere around Livingston, MT, I started recording my thoughts on how these mindsets can help me as someone who wants to become a better horseman.

Never be too good to get better:

This principle underscores the importance of continual learning and improvement for us as horsemen. No matter how skilled or experienced we may be, there is always room for growth and refinement in our tech-nique, understanding, and communication with our critters. This could involve seeking feedback from mentors, attending clinics or workshops, or remaining open-minded to new approaches and perspectives. We all stand on the shoulders of others. For me, a few of those others are Ty Evans, Ed Haefliger, and Terry Wagner. Find mentors that speak to your soul.

Do what you do on purpose, with purpose:

Good horsemanship requires intentionality in everything we do. Whether grooming, tacking up, riding, or working our animals on the ground, each interaction should be deliberate and focused. Active and engaged horsemen should be mindful of their movements and communication with the horse. We should work towards increasing clarity and consistency in all of our cues and commands.

Little by little, a little becomes a lot:

This principle comes from an ancient Tanzanian proverb that still rings true. Progress in horsemanship and life comes in small, incremental steps. Consistency and patience are essential when building trust with a skeptical mule, refining a particular skill, or overcoming a challenge. This idea should remind riders that even minor improvements or efforts will accumulate over time to make a significant difference in our partnership with our animals. If we put in the work and do the little things every day, in due time, those little things will add up and get us to where we want to be.

Focus on the process, not the results:

Rather than fixating solely on achieving specific outcomes, such as winning competitions or mastering advanced techniques,

this principle encourages us to concentrate on the journey of improvement. If we divide our goals into smaller steps, we'll be able to see progress even when the end goal has yet to be reached. By focusing on the process – such as building a solid foundation, refining our skills, and nurturing our bonds with the animals – we can cultivate a more sustainable and fulfilling approach to horsemanship.

Embrace the boredom of consistency:

Good horsemanship often involves repetitive tasks and routines, such as regular groundwork sessions, grooming, and even maintenance chores. While these activities may seem mundane at times, they are essential for fostering discipline, building trust, and reinforcing positive habits in both horse and rider. Consistency is critical when working on new skills. Whether it's learning to side pass, moving the hinds, or learning a new language, consistent practice is paramount. Regular engagement allows for gradual progress and mastery over time and ensures that knowledge and proficiency are retained and built upon Embracing the “boredom” of consistency means recognizing the value of these daily practices in contributing to our long-term progress and success.

Learn from failure, learn from success:

Another way of saying this could be “failure sucks, but instructs.”

In horsemanship, as in life, both failures and successes offer valuable lessons. Mistakes and setbacks provide opportunities for reflection, growth, and refinement of skills. Conversely, achievements and breakthroughs offer affirmation and motivation to continue pushing forward. The basic idea is that as soon as feasible after some action occurs, we should consider what went right, what went wrong, and what could be done better next time. I do this after every horse camping trip and clinic that I lead. By adopting a mindset of continuous learning from positive and negative experiences, we can deepen our understanding, resilience, and effectiveness in all interactions with our animals both in the arena and on the trail.

Well, there you go: the six principles of a high-performance mindset and their application to horsemanship.

They emphasize continuous learning, intentional interactions, incremental progress, focusing on the journey rather than

outcomes, embracing consistency, and learning from both failures and successes. Practicing these ideas can foster growth, resilience, and effectiveness in our equine-human interactions.

Permanent Mud Solutions with Paddock Slabs

Spring is in the air, the birds are chirping, daffodils are popping up out of the ground, and the days are getting longer. Out in the pasture and around the barn though, one other clear sign of spring is the seemingly never-ending mud that comes with the season. Horses are masters at churning up mud, and it can make for a messy situation. Last month, we talked about Mud Grids that are a great solution for mud that already exists on a property This month, I caught up with Elizabeth Hueftlein of HAHN Plastics (North America) Ltd. to talk about a more permanent mud solution called Paddock Slabs. With the right preparation, they can permanently eliminate muddy situations and have many other uses around the barn and home.

Paddock Slabs look a little bit different than the Mud Grid System, they are honeycomb shape measuring about 16” by 20”. Although the slab weighs less than the grid, Hueftlein advised that the product is very strong. “They can bear almost 465 psi (73,090 lbs) unfilled. When filled with sand, gravel, soil, or grass, they can bear 1,350 psi (228,300 lbs). This is more than enough for large horse trailers, trucks and other equine requirements.” The main difference is that Paddock Slabs do require ground preparation to install. If you can do some of the ground preparation with your own equipment or have a trusted contractor, Paddock Slabs can be a more cost-effective solution. Hueftlein suggested that the best time to do this type of project is in the summer or early fall.

There are many uses for Paddock Slabs that include everything from turnout lots, pasture gate areas, round pens and arenas to parking areas for trucks and trailers. The correct installation of the Paddock Slabs is essential to proper performance. “The installation really depends on the application. The base does have to be done properly for the grids to perform as we expect them to”, Hueftlein stated.

Hueftlein shared the specifications of a typical installation which would be from the deepest layer, moving up:

1. 4–12” free-draining sub-base

2.

Here are some fill recommendations Hueftlein suggested based on application:

Sand, rubber, fleece etc. – Arenas*, round pens, exercise areas

Grass finish (seeded or turfed) – Paddocks, exercise areas, sacrifice areas, feeding spots, tethering/mounting areas and paddock gates

Angular gravel finish (3/16–5/8”) – Access and trails, general stable areas, car parking and horse trailers

*not recommended for jumping arenas

When installing, these slabs must be laid down side by side and not staggered. Hueftlein advised “Once you lay a small section, you will get an understanding of how the grids need to be placed to fill the area you are working on and if that means moving left to right or right to left.” She also stressed the importance of leaving a 1” gap (filled with gravel or topsoil) between the edge of the slab and the hard edging like wooden or recycled plastic lumber This will give enough room for expansion and contraction during the freezes and thaws preventing 'tenting' of the slabs.

When choosing between a Mud Grid on already existing mud and the Paddock Slabs, Hueftlein suggested considering if this will be a permanent installation. If the slabs can go in during construction of a facility or where fence lines, feeders, or loafing sheds are in permanent positions, they can be a cost saving solution compared to the grids. They are also great for applications such as stall bases, wash racks, and aisleways because with the right base, they offer great drainage in these areas, and they are easy to stand on. In stalls they can also be used in conjunction with rubber matting over top as they will keep the mats on an even surface which is easy to clean.

These Paddock Slabs can also be used on and around trail areas. They have been used in projects for both horse and human trails alike. They can be particularly helpful in providing traction on steep embankments, helping to prevent erosion In these applications the slabs do need to be secured into the ground to prevent them from shifting Paddock Slabs are also made from recycled plastic materials, so they are an environmentally friendly product.

There are so many great uses for these innovative mud solution products, maybe it's time to give them a try on your farm and say goodbye to mud for good. Spring is a great time to plan for projects and maybe this one should be on your list. If you have questions about your mud solution project, Cashmans is here to help. We have a handy calculator on the website that can help you figure out how many grids or slabs you may need and an experienced team to help you plan your project.

Self-Compassion

Cardeccia | https://confidencethroughconnection.com/

In the intricate dance of horse-human partnerships, there's a crucial element often overlooked: the way we treat ourselves. Our horses aren't just keen observers of our actions, they're profoundly attuned to our inner world.

Have you ever marvelled at how your horse seems to sense when you're having a tough day? They're not merely perceptive, they're deeply connected to our emotions. When we extend gentleness to ourselves, they feel it, and our bond deepens. However, when self-criticism creeps in, it casts a shadow over our partnership.

Horses possess an extraordinary ability to discern authenticity from discord, a survival instinct honed over centuries. When we humans align our thoughts, behaviours, and feelings in peaceful harmony, we resonate with the essence of congruence. Conversely, succumbing to self-criticism disrupts this alignment, sending signals of incongruence that our equine partners keenly sense. It's not just about being kind to ourselves for our sake, it's about nurturing a bond grounded in trust and mutual understanding

Embarking on a journey of self-compassion isn't just beneficial for us – it enriches our horses' lives and strengthens our partnership.

Imagine waking up each morning and greeting yourself with the same kindness you show your horse. Embracing your flaws as opportunities for growth, rather than sources of shame – that's the transformative power of self-compassion.

You might harbor doubts about cultivating such kindness within yourself, and that's okay

Here are some tips to help you along the way:

Embrace Your Humanity: Recognize that making mistakes is part of being human. Your horse doesn't expect perfection from you – why should you?

Listen to Your Inner Voice: Pay attention to the stories you tell yourself Challenge negative narratives with words of encouragement and compassion.

Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection: Every step forward, no matter how small, deserves recognition. Celebrate your succes-

ses and the effort you invest in your partnership with your horse.

Share Your Journey: Surround yourself with a community of fellow horse lovers who understand the essence of partnership. Seek guidance from mentors or instructors for challenging moments.

Your journey with your horse transcends mere riding or training – it's about nurturing a relationship founded on trust, understanding, and love. And it all begins with how you treat yourself.

So, let's pledge to be kinder to ourselves, not only for our sake but for the well-being of our cherished equine companions. Both your horse and you are worth it!

Riding students started disclosing infor-mation in conversations much deeper, much quicker than her counseling clients. Interestingly, the riding students were also reporting changes in their lives outside of the riding arena as a result of their interaction with horses. In addition, Kim noticed how many riders were facing some type of apprehension, fear or even traumatic reaction around the horses. PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING™

BUILDING A PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUR HORSE

How To Do A Figure Correctly

Let’s get ready to show and grow!

A Gentle Reminder . . .

For this next series on training, you'll be your own trainer for 80 to 90 percent of the time. You will learn to find those remarkable feelings when both you and your horse come into balance, regardless of discipline. Being in the Dressage Court (arena) will help you attain that balance. We all want those feelings with a horse, regardless of what saddle you're riding or what breed of horse you swing a leg over. We all dream of moments of being in synchronization with our horses. These moments keep us hungry to learn more and achieve more difficult tasks with our horses. Remember, this Western Dressage discipline will steal your heart and create a passion for riding in harmony with your horse. Remember, too, that dressage is simply the foundation to ride correctly, and for the horse to be confident and willing with whatever performance you choose!

I'm looking forward to the next several months, when I'll share tips and guidelines for understanding the simplicity of learning (in written format, at least) Western Dressage training from Introductory Level to Level 5. Could be the start of my new book!

INTRODUCTORY LEVELS: Here's a reminder...

The horse should show smooth transitions and a willingness before, during and after the rider's commands. The rider should show invisible, light aids during all transitions.

REQUIREMENTS:

Easiest to hardest task: Tips to understanding how to do a Figure correctly

*20 meter half circle at the working jog — E to B or B to E

The half circle is to be 10 meters from the line of E or B, in order to make the half size of 20 meters.

I ride the half circle making two points. Point 1, first quarter of the circle on the center line, and Point 2 at E or B completing the 1/2 circle. Meeting the 10 meter at Point 1 in the half circle will get you positive, accurate points. The horse is to show balance and an inside bend on the half circle. He should demonstrate straightness, regularity, and quality of the jog

*Halt: 4 seconds

Balanced in transition to a square, straight halt. Horse should demonstrate immobility, willing, smooth transitions. He should show regularity and quality of the walk, and a willing, smooth and straight transition to the halt.

*20 Meter circle at the working jog

The importance of the Balance and Bend: the size and shape of circle with inside bend; regularity and quality of the jog; straightness. Straightness is controlling the horse's body alignment through the rider's leg and rein aids. Straightness is absolutely necessary to achieve balance of the horse in order to show willingness, relaxation, consistent tempo in the gaits, and movement which will be free flowing.

*Change rein at working jog

Balance and bend in the turn and corners; straightness on the diagonal; regularity and quality of the jog.

*Free walk on 20 meter half circle

Horse willing to freely stretch his neck forward and down; relaxation; swing through the back; ground covering stride; straightness; willing, smooth transition; regularity and quality of the free and working walks.

*One loop 5 meters off the track

Importance of balance and correct changes of bend on loop; regularity and quality of the jog; balance and bend in the corners.

TIPS ABOUT BASIC LEVEL GAITS & DEFINITIONS:

Free jog – This pace is two-beat of moderate lengthening of stride and frame compared to the Working Jog and is done without hurrying. The horse should stretch forward and down over the top line with relaxation maintaining balance, tempo, and regularity of the jog on a loose rein. There should be a smooth, willing retake of the reins in transition to the working jog The free jog may be ridden posting or sitting

From Lynn: I like to see the rider post to the jog here, it feels as though it allows a light rider on the horse's back to allow an easier stretch of the horse's back muscles.

Working lope – The lope is a gait with three equal, regular beats with time of suspension after the third beat. While maintaining the three beat cadence, the horse must go forward with even and elastic steps. The back must be relaxed and the shoulders free; there is an obvious push from the hindquarters and the hind legs step actively up under the horse. The horse maintains light contact with the bit and his nose shall be on or slightly in front of the vertical in this level.

A note from Lynn: For the quality of the lope the horse's outline must have an uphill balance with the poll always level or higher than the wither at this level. The higher the levels, the poll will come higher for an uphill outline with correct collection. This is essential to have the quality of the lope in a 3-beat at all times.

United Horse Coalition & Equine Network Foundation ‘A Home For Every Horse’ Strengthens Partnership To Benefit At-Risk Equines Nationwide

Many hooves make light work. With this in mind, A Home for Every Horse, an Equine Network Foundation program, and the United Horse Coalition (UHC) have strengthened their partnership to enhance support for at-risk equines and their owners across the nation. The UHC is a program of the American Horse Council Foundation and serves as a vital link connecting owners and horses in need with essential resources nationwide. A Home for Every Horse endeavor to offer assistance to those organizations that provide these essential resources, serving as a means of giving back and supporting those who tirelessly contribute to the welfare of horses.

“We are excited to continue to leverage the strengths of both organizations and streamline access to resources for horse owners and at-risk equines. Equally vital is our commitment to bolstering support for the rescues and sanctuaries that serve them.” As, Julie Broadway, President of AHC emphasizes: “We cannot assist one without supporting the other.”

Rescue and sanctuary organizations will now benefit from a more streamlined process – requiring just one application for joint AHFEH/UHC membership. With the convenience of updating any changed information as needed through the UHC’s Member Portal, valuable time spent on redundant applications is significantly reduced.

The best part of all of this? It’s free!

Membership with AHFEH/UHC is offered at no cost to registered 501c3 rescue and sanctuary organizations across the United States. This inclusive membership provides access to benefits from AHFEH and UHC sponsors such as Purina, Absorbine, Tractor Supply, Weatherbeeta, and Equine Discounts, all of whom are dedicated to enhancing support for equine welfare initiatives.

“The Equine Network Foundation is proud to be expanding A Home for Every Horse in 2024 and sponsoring qualified 501c3’s membership to UHC is just one of the programs we are looking to this year,” said Melissa Kitchen, President of the Equine Network Foundation. “We value the partnership we have with UHC; welfare of the horse is front and center in all that we do, and together we stand by our commitment to help rescues take care of the horses in need.”

The benefits include:

Access to Equine Discounts promotions, including Sherwin Williams, John Deere, Big Ass Fans, ODP Solutions, and Farmers Solutions, and more!

Gain access to the Member Portal area and listings in the UHC’s Equine Resource Database.

Educational Resources on Responsible Horse Ownership and Resources for Rescues on the UHC website.

Free Purina Feed Coupons in the Spring and Fall of each year

Free and unlimited listings for rescue horses on equine.com

Receive a Weatherbeeta blanket for new horse owners upon adoption through Equine.com

Additional benefits from the AHFEH Sponsors.

Plus, many more exciting benefits!

To qualify, you must be a registered 501c3 Equine Rescue or Sanctuary operating within the United States of America, holding a valid IRS Form 990 within the past three years. Qualifying is easy for rescues and sanctuaries.

Additionally, AHFEH and UHC will require biannual updates via your member portal area for the following information:

Would you like to remain a member of AHFEH / UHC?

Check your contact information and ensure that it is correct. Respond to the AHFEH-specific questions in the member portal area. (3 questions.)

Submit your stories to AHFEH to highlight the great horses, volunteers and programs in the rescue world. (Great exposure for your organization!)

Rescues must actively list available rescue horses for adoption on Equine.com (free to members!)

Submit your data to the EWDC (only required to be eligible for the free Purina Feed coupons, Weatherbeeta blankets, or any other AHFEH promotions). *The Organization must have submitted all relevant data for the current EWDC collection period. If more organizations meet requirements than coupons available, then a lottery system will be instilled.

For more information, or to apply, see the UHC website: https:// unitedhorsecoalition.weblinkconnect.com/atlas/forms/7

(Current UHC Members do NOT need to re-submit an application).

Buy your own private barn with indoor arena near I-69. Currently 5 stalls (2 are double sized stalls), ofce, tack room on one side of the arena. Other aisle way has large run-in area, plenty of space to add additional stalls. Ample hay storage including loft areas. Small indoor arena has new footing and is approx. 70x64. Has a deck next to tack room that could be a viewing area. 2019 barn got a NEW metal roof, NEW asphalt
