IEA is a national organization modeled after the IHSA program hosted by colleges and universities around the country. High school and Middle school riders compete with the opportunity to compete at regional and national competitions. Students can win prizes and scholarships. The 2008 National Finals had more than $125,000 of scholarship money granted to IEA riders. At IEA competitions, riders do not supply their own horses or tack. The horses, saddle and other tack are all provided to the riders at the show. Essentially, the horse is new to the rider, and the scores are based upon horsemanship and equitation, not the horse. IEA is open to riders grades 6-12 at any riding level. Give us a call to be part of the team! You don’t have to board here to join.

Horse Association & Club News

BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS Mid- summer means the Brighton Recreation Area is in full swing. Although we trail riders pretty much stick to “our side” of the Recreation Area, it's worth mentioning that there's also a large complex across the road which offers camping for the RV and pop-up trailer crowd, and even tent campers. They also have showers and flush toilets. Yes, those amenities are nice, but a swing through that area reveals that the camp sites are cheek-to-jowl, there's always noise and congestion, and your backyard offers more privacy. We'll take our equestrian campground anytime. There are eighteen sites and they are situated on what is essentially a long circle drive. Each one is unique and yet they all have common features. There are large posts for picket lines, they have fire rings, and there are trees galore. If you peer through the trees you might be able to see your neighbor but what you can always count on is privacy and tranquility. If you do want to meet some new people and socialize, you're always welcome to visit folks on foot or horseback. Yes, these are rustic sites so there's no electricity or running water, but that can be part of the charm. Hand pumps, toilets and manure pits with wheel barrows are all available in the campground. Several trails lead directly off the campground area, so there are no roads or long distances to navigate. And once you're on the trails, you'll be delighted. You'll be riding up and down hills that are fun but not too challenging. You'll be riding past a lake and one very easy water crossing

over a small stream. Wherever you ride, you'll almost always be in forested areas with evergreens and hardwoods. Plus, you cannot get lost. Our trails have signage at every intersection and riders can pick up trail maps at the staging area. The staging area is our main center of activity. It can accommodate many rigs for day rides and after their rides, folks can stick around for refreshments or a picnic. We have fire rings, barbeque grills, and picnic tables and here we have running water. Our electric water pump project involved a lot of work and planning, but everyone who comes to the staging area has immediate access to potable water at the turn of a spigot handle. We ask that all visitors sign in when they come to the staging area and hope that campers will sign in also. The data we collect demonstrates that large numbers of trail riders are visiting the Brighton Recreation area, and we hope you will too. Mark Delaney BTRA Secretary

Gaye Platte for trimming the ride and walk-a-thon trails before this big ride. They did a great job. The Park's brush hog broke down, so not all the trails were mowed. I ride a 14 hh Paso Fino and we rode through grass as tall as his withers on the cart trail! The brush hog is now fixed, so this problem should be remedied soon. If you would like to become a board member or officer, elections will be held in August (for board members) and September (for officers). Please plan to attend these meetings to let us know of your interest and so your votes can be heard! Both meetings will be held in the Ionia Recreation Area Equestrian Campground, Site 138, after the club campout potluck at approximately 5:30 pm. The dates are August 20th and September 24th. This month's club sponsored campout is scheduled for August 19th–21st. Please plan on joining us! Site 138 will be the camp host site. Hope to see you all out on the trails soon! IONIA HORSE TRAILS ASSOC. The June campout was a huge success! Our Charity Committee did a super job on the Susan G. Koman Ride and Walk-a-thon bringing in over $1,300! I don't know if someone fogged or if Mother Nature simply decided we didn't need the little flying blood- suckers this time, whichever, we had great weather and a very low bug count. Thanks go out to Gale and Kim Moore, Rob Potter and Joe Burgess for roasting the pig for our potluck. It was yummy! Thanks also go to Lea Burger, Tara Sowa, Wendy Walker and

MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING What a great start to a Michigan summer! With three sanctioned rides done already and a fourth one by the time this prints, it has been a great summer to CMO. The Wild Wild West CMO at Silver Creek was hot and sticky but the clear creek was great relief. Thanks to Shellie and Vicki for putting on a fun and challenging ride. They even let my group win the short course, what a gift! The rides in June were both at Hungerford and if you have not (30)

gotten a chance to ride up near Big Rapids, it is beautiful. The trails have all been cleared from the early summer storms and they are well marked. At the “Wonderful World of...” CMO, we hunted for Disney characters and answered a lot of Disney trivia, thanks goes to Bob and Sherri Wager. What a great ride with spectacular weather. It was exciting to see some new teams giving orienteering a try. The August ride is the Sit Down, Hang On, Shut Up CMO at Ionia Recreation Area. Please come out and give it a try. Feel free to visit our website (www.micmo.org) or contact Barb Drake at 989-227-0045 if you are interested in the August 13 & 14th ride. We would love to have more new people to enjoy the trails and evening potlucks. Don't worry, if you don't have a compass you can usually borrow one at the entry booth. This is such a great event for you, your horse and your horsey friends. Can't wait to see you on the trails!

SLEEPY HOLLOW TRL. RIDERS Want to ride better? SHTRA is supporting an interesting, educational, and fun benefit for equestrians: October 1, 2011 a “Yoga Workshop for Equestrian Riders” will be held at the Bath Senior Center, 144480 Webster Rd., Bath, MI. The instructorlead clinic will start at 9:00 am and run until 10:30 am. Jacqueleen Magon, M.D. is a certified Yoga Therapist. This physician's focus for participants will be on breathing, chest expansion, finding and understanding the core, lower body s y m m e t r y, s t r e n g t h a n d stretches. Also, relating how, as a rider, to improve our body's effectiveness. The $15.00 fee will be collected at the door. Preregistrations are appreciated by September 15, and walk-ins will be welcomed. Bring your own mat. Contact Mary at 517-6414134 for directions and information on this special opportunity! The Drive in the Park on July 9th found us wishing for cooler temperatures as we rode and drove the trails at the Park. Gale Moore drove his spotted mare, Nancy Caulfield had her minis, Michelle VanderBoom drove her gelding, and Jean Pitch had her mini. The rest of us were riding.

The Michigan Fox Trotter Assoc. joined us on Saturday, filling the day use area. The special event permit allowed camping for the weekend and riding/driving along the old lake road. We welcomed the new scenery. Our proposed new loop, that is not yet opened, will follow some of that area. Gale and Don Brown cooked up breakfast and grilled burgers for the potluck. Thanks to all who came and made the weekend fun. It was special to see carts on the trail and watch them weave the poles. On July 8th we held a work bee to trim out trails before the drive and thanks go to Gale, Kim, Mike, Pat, Linda for all that sweaty work. Don Brown brushhogged the entire route since the grass has grown so fast. Thanks! I had lunch ready for those workers when they came in. More work bees will be planned to trim the east loop, cut out dead ash, and work on the bridge. Stay posted for those TBA dates. If you trim the trail as you ride, it will really help with this year's exploding growth of branches. Call me at 989-6612541 to register your time spent. At the last Board Meeting, July 12, the new shirts and tank tops were reviewed and plans for the DAMN Ride made. Next Board Meeting will be August 9 at the Park. Worlds and National Show are now history. Many of us stuck back here in Michigan spent a lot of time watching it from our computers and cheering our fellow members, friends and family on from afar. From the classes I watched and the results I've checked on, our Michigan contingency was apparently quite competitive as we had a lot of Champions and Reserves as well as many other excellent placings! I started keeping track, but had already filled up a page of paper by day two - so I knew I wouldn't be able to fit everyone's names in the newsletter. So, I will say a quick congratulations to everyone who placed while the following folks ended up bringing home some serious hardware in the form of Champion or Reserve… Morgan Hanchett, Maeanna Stover, Taylor Bennett, Mariah Peake, Hannah Huq, J e n n i f e r C a r t e r, J u l i e Dopp/Alicia Bidwell, John Curtis/Bobbie Sue McLaughlin, Waynette McTague, Rusty Miller and Virginia Williams. Skip the Lineup, owned by Julie Dopp was the Champion English Horse with Jennifer Carters’ Honkin Hunter right behind them. Jennifer also won Champion Non Pro English Exhibitor. Also, congratulations to Dave and Bobbie Best on all the Impulsive Zipper babies that were winning and doing well out there. Hopefully I have remembered everyone and, if not, please feel free to let me know and I'll make sure to include it in the next newsletter. Looking ahead, the Summer Sizzler show and Classic/Futurity Shows are right around the corner. I've already received quite a few stall reservations for both of them. If you want that special location for your stalls at MSU, be sure to contact me at appaloosastalls@yahoo.com to make your reservations soon. There is NO deposit needed for the MSU shows, just let me know how many you need.

YANKEE SPRINGS TRL RIDERS The scheduled workbee and meeting on July 9 accomplished much needed clearing on the 4 and 6 mile trails, in spite of being attended by only 12 members. Clearing the 9 mile trail will need more workers and quads for transportation of equipment. Tom and his tractor carried sand to picket pole locations which was then spread. Ron and Tom's attendance at the Trailmaster course in Wisconsin has us looking to improve erosion problems. We will need volunteers to do the work. You do not need to be a member of YSTRA to help fix the years of neglect on the horse trails. Anyone who enjoys the scenic Yankee Springs trails can join in helping. The feeling of accomplishment while riding is worth the effort. Lets get the trails ready for the fall colors! Workbee workers meet at the campground at 9am. Phone 269649-4310 or 269-388-5926 to confirm the plans. Bring quads, chain saws, shovel and rakes. The next workbee will be AUGUST 13. A Board meeting will follow the potluck lunch. September’s meeting will be held on the 14th; October’s meeting is the 11th. All members are welcome to attend! Don’t forget our Halloween Event at the Campground on October 15th. It includes trick-ortreating, prizes for costumes, games and fun for all! Help support the trails by buying shirts at the campground on weekends. Visit www.ystra.org for info. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

HOW TO USE & CHOOSE GROOMING PRODUCTS By Heather Smith Thomas Green Grass Syndicated Features

Many horse owners groom their animals daily, especially when riding regularly or showing. Many also use a wide variety of topical products: shampoos and hair conditioners, mane and tail detanglers, stain removers, shiny coat applications, fly repellents, etc. Jean Greek, DVM, ACVD (veterinary dermatologist at Care Animal Hospital in Santa Barbara, California) says horsemen often use anything and everything on their horses, sometimes without thinking about possible reactions or skin sensitivities. “Fortunately, there are not a lot of contact allergies in horses compared to humans, but on occasion a certain product may be irritating to your particular horse,” she says. DON'T SHARE The biggest problem Greek sees in her practice is skin diseases passed around by use of shared grooming tools. “A horse ends up with ringworm or some other transmissible skin problem because owners have been sharing brushes, clippers, etc.,” explains Greek. “Ringworm, especially, can be readily spread. You may use a friend's equipment at a show and bring home ringworm to your farm or stable. Even a normallooking horse can carry fungi on

the skin; you may think you are borrowing tools from someone whose horse is perfectly healthy and your horse develops ringworm.” CHOOSE CAREFULLY Horsemen often try new products or something recommended by a friend, but before putting a new product all over your horse, try a small amount in a small area on the side of the neck to make sure he's not sensitive. Then if there's a reaction, it won't be made worse by a blanket or saddle pad rubbing it. “If your horse is sensitive, it won't affect his whole body,” Greek notes. “If he does react, this doesn't mean it's a bad product; it just means your horse is sensitive. You might need to try several products before you find one that works best for your horse. “Another issue is that people tend to use things on their horses that are harsh — that they'd never dream of using on their dog or cat — such as iodine-based medicated shampoos. Iodine definitely kills bacteria and fungi, but is also hard on the skin,” warns Greek. “If the horse is already itching, anything with iodine in it could make him itchier. He may rub out hair or make the skin raw by rubbing on things.

©2011 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • AUGUST 2011

(34)

ADVERSE REACTION If you suspect a horse is reacting to a new shampoo or any other topical product, immediately use a lot of water to rinse off as much of the product as possible. Diluting and washing away the irritating material won't cause further reaction. “Contact reactions are uncommon, but show up as redness or itching. The more serious cases show up as sores,” says Greek. Thorough rinsing a horse after shampooing is very important: shampoo residue left on the skin can cause an irritation reaction.

LESS IS MORE The most important thing when grooming is to keep your horse clean. Many people put more products on a horse than needed or healthy. “If a horse has a specific skin condition, a medicated shampoo can be helpful,” says Greek, “but otherwise just hosing him off to get rid of sweat and dirt is probably best.” This is less apt to destroy the natural oils on hair and skin than frequent washings with shampoo.

CHECK THE LABEL Read labels, especially if you know your horse is sensitive to certain ingredients. “I won't buy something if ingredients aren't listed on the label,” states Greek. “If your horse is sensitive to something, I'd hesitate to use anything that has some unknown ingredients.” Read the fine print and make sure the product is adequately labeled. Rules for listing ingredients for topical products are vague. If it's not a prescription topical, it's not mandatory that everything be listed on the label. Even “all natural” ingredients are no guarantee that your horse won't have a reaction. “If you bathe your horse with something that says it contains all natural ingredients, this doesn't mean it's safe,” warns Greek. “There are some very toxic natural substances. An example is Melaleuca: This is what tea tree oil is made from and it's a very popular natural product, but a lot of horses are allergic to it. “It often surprises people to learn that natural products can be harmful. Most things are well tolerated by horses and there are very few I'd recommend you stay away from, but the bottom line is that if a horse is allergic to one ingredient, it doesn't matter what the other 99.9 percent of the product is. Stay away from

GROOMING TIPS Joy Barbet, DVM, ACVD, Clinical Assistant Professor at University of Florida, offers these suggestions: 1. Completely rinse off all shampoo products to avoid skin irritation. 2. Detangling products can be drying to mane and tail and may require use of moisturizers afterward. 3. Have separate grooming tools for each horse; some parasites, fungi and bacterial infections can be transferred from horse to horse via grooming tools. 4. Allergic reactions to products differ from irritant reactions; the latter often occur at first use whereas allergic reactions require priming of the immune system by previous exposure. 5. Many shampoos and other topical products contain similar ingredients in addition to the “special” herbs, moisturizers or fragrances. If you suspect a reaction to a product and want to totally change products, read labels carefully to be sure they don't share similar ingredients. 6. Leave-on products containing chlorhexadine may cause photosensitivity reactions. 7. Antibacterial shampoos containing benzoyl peroxide may bleach or fade dark colored animals.

that ingredient in whatever product you use.”
