Herbal Shampoos for a Heavenly Bath By Dr. Eleanor Kellon, Staff Veterinary Specialist for Uckele Health & Nutrition Some horses like a bath, while others couldn't care less, and some will buck it. In any case, making the occasion as pleasant as possible will go a long way toward making it a pleasurable event and bonding experience for both of you. Herbal shampoo ingredients impart unique and appealing fragrances, and offer real and tangible benefits, as well. The following is a cheatsheet to help you choose the most beneficial combination for your horse's health and wellbeing. Oregon Grape has a long traditional history of use for inflammatory skin conditions, particularly psoriasis in humans. It may also have some antimicrobial effects. White Willow is most well-known as a pain and fever reducer since it contains salicin, herbal aspirin. Salicin is also a mild irritant and defoliant, ideal for removing flaking skin, or “dandruff.” Calendula is the familiar marigold. It is easily the premier herb in skin care. Calendula has been used to treat a wide variety of skin problems from eczema to wounds and burns. It has documented benefits of being antiinflammatory and also encourages wound healing. Lavender is often used for its undeniably agreeable aroma. However, less well known are the effects on skin. Components in lavender have both anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Eucalyptus is best known as an aromatic to ease breathing but also has several skin uses. It stimulates the production of ceramide, an important part of the seal in the upper barrier layer of skin. It is an insect

repellant and is active against bacteria and fungi, including antibiotic resistant bacterial strains. It even has some anesthetic properties. The essential oil of the herb Rosemary is a well known antiseptic, meaning it kills bacteria on contact even in low concentration. It is also a popular food grade preservative. Tea Tree, native to Australia, was initially used as its name suggests, to make tea. In the 1920's it was discovered that the essential oil from Tea Tree was a potent antiseptic even in low concentration. It is active against viruses, bacteria and fungi. It even has some activity against external parasites/insects and repellant properties. Aloe Vera is another herbal with a very long history of use for skin issues. It has demonstrated the ability to help in control of inflammation, soothe irritated skin and encourage healing. Chamomile tea is popular as a calming aid. With respect to the skin, chamomile has anti-inflammatory effects that parallel those of topical corticosteroids. Ylang Ylang, aka perfume tree, is a highly aromatic tree from the Philippines. It is most commonly used as a soothing fragrance, but it can also control the output of sebum, the oily and waxy skin secretion. Chickweed is a common plant found worldwide that is probably under used. On the skin, it effectively relieves itch, possibly from its documented antihistamine effect, but also because it is a very good antiinflammatory in general. Thyme is very popular as an herb in cooking. It's essential oil, thymol, has both direct antibacterial activity and the ability to sensitize resistant bacteria to some antibiotics. Like Rosemary, the antibacterial effect is so strong it is also used as a

common natural food preservative. It is also an effective antifungal so helps with the itching that typically is seen with fungal infections. It also repels biting midges. Lemon Eucalyptus is an effective mosquito, tick and Culicoides midge repellant. It is also an effective antifungal. Experienced formulators can mix and match these ingredients to magnify effects such as easing irritated skin or targeting infections. They are also very pleasant to use and make bath time something for you both to look forward to. Tip: The general impression is that herbal ingredient shampoos are gentle. They do in fact have a good safety history. However, there is always the potential for either irritant contact dermatitis or the development of a contact allergic reaction. Contact dermatitis appears within minutes to a day after first exposure. Allergic dermatitis can take several exposures to develop and appears 24 to 72 hours after exposure. Symptoms may include redness of pink skin, rash/bumps, itching, scaling and pain. Again, these reactions are rare, but you should be aware of them and their timing in case your horse should develop similar symptoms.
