YOUTH SHOW NEWS The Michigan Horse Show Association’s 2010 All-Breed Youth Horse Show was a blast! This show, held at the MSU Pavilion, East Lansing, MI, October 28-31, was highly successful - more than doubling its entries from 2009! On Saturday night, the kids enjoyed Stall-to-Stall Trick or Treating, Halloween Games and Contests and a complimentary Exhibitors' Supper at which 643 people were served! The food was prepared by MHSA President, Sue Hall and her husband, Russ. Some dedication there! This show began in 1969 at the Michigan State Fair Grounds and was highly successful early on with numbers as high as 900. It was billed as The World's Largest All-Breed Youth Show; but it has struggled since losing the use of the Michigan State Fairgrounds ten years ago. They say location is everything, and the MSU Pavilion on the Halloween Weekend seems to be the right place and time. T h e 2 0 1 1 d a t e s a re October 27-30. The calendar says that's not Halloween; but it will be Halloween at the MHSA Youth Show on Saturday night! The Michigan Horse Show Association, Inc., is the oldest of all Michigan's horse groups, celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. For more information on the association, the Youth Show, and other events, please visit the MHSA online at michiganhorseshow.com.

Once we have results of this meeting, I'll pass them on in newsletters and email communications. We decided to use Site 138, the first one in the center aisle on the right as you enter camp, as our Camp Host site for the 2011 club campout weekends. This should ensure everyone in camp finds us and can participate in all events if they choose. Dates of 2011 campouts will be published as soon as they are determined. unfair to any trainer for a horse owner to expect to drop off his/her horse at the trainer's facility and pick up a “finished” product at the end of the training contract. The rider must be actively involved in working with a trainer. It is the owner/rider's responsibility to help the trainer understand his abilities, and the rider must be ready to accept the trainer's feedback. If the communication is open and honest between the trainer and the rider and they both always act in the best interest of the horse, then the training process should be rewarding and fun. To improve in any sport, you need the help of an Instructor/Coach. It is the same in horse training. A horse trainer is a key player in the success with your horse.
Building a Partnership with Your Horse -
MORE TIPS ON FINDING A TRAINER By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 Last month we talked about ways to find a trainer, and went over details to look for when visiting a potential trainer and his/her facility. Here are some suggestions on how to evaluate a trainer in order to find one who can help you and your horse achieve your goals. Communication is Key As with most partnerships, communication is the key. Once you have found a trainer that you think you would like to work with, set up an appointment time to talk to him/her. Ask the trainer about his philosophy of horse training and encourage him to share some of his training successes with you. Ask if he will give you names of clients who have used his services so that you can contact them for references. When you return home from your appointment, check these references, and check out the trainer's reputation with professional horseman's associations, such as AQHA Professional Horseman's Association or breed associations. Re m e m b e r, y o u a r e interviewing the trainer to work with you and your horse—the trainer is not interviewing you! Share the blueprint of your goals with the trainer and ask how he will help you to achieve them with your horse. If possible, set up an appointment for the trainer to ride your horse, see your
horse ridden, or view a video of your horse being ridden, in order to get his opinion of your horse in relationship to your goals. See if the trainer gives you a realistic projection about your horse according to your blueprint or if he suggests goals that will be expensive and unattainable. Do Not Forget the Details Ask to see a training contract so that you know what it includes. Will you be able to observe any or all training sessions? Will you be able to have lessons with your horse? Will you be p r o v i d e d w i t h re g u l a r progress reports as to how your horse is progressing towards your goals and how the horse is retaining his training? Do not be afraid to ask respectfully some probing questions such as: Will there be any additional costs for board, grooming, or other incidentals or are they included in the training cost? Is the trainer willing to suggest options to help you continue the training? This might include developing a lesson program for you and your horse or critiquing videotapes of your progress. The answers to these questions will give you important insights into the trainer's attitude, personality, professionalism, and knowledge and your ability to work with him. Remember, a trainer is not a miracle worker. It is

Most of the time, "an eye on the ground" is your best training tool for training your horses, improving your riding skills, and gaining knowledge. A trainer can also destroy a horse and rider with the incorrect information and by using forceful techniques. Use your common sense at all times when a trainer is assisting you with your horse. If you do not have that eye on the ground, you can be your own trainer by using a video. Have someone video you from the side in profile, and you can learn lots from this too. feeding program, with optimal amounts of unrefined oil to stabilize blood sugar and the associated hormones.” Grogan also suggests that close attention be paid to the Glycemic Index (GI), which measures the influences on glucose availability in the bloodstream, “Feeds with high GI contain sugars that break down rapidly during digestion, releasing glucose rapidly into the bloodstream. Feeds with low GI contain carbohydrates that break down slowly, releasing glucose gradually into the bloodsteam.” “Sweet feed has the highest glycemic effect of all feeds,” Grogan continues, “Feeds with a lower GI have more positive health benefits and results in reduced free radical formation, reduced stress and a more stable, healthy blood sugar level.” In addition, Grogan advises adding unrefined oil or essential fatty acids to the diet, which can have a dramatic effect on slowing the glycemic response. He also promotes using nonsugar sweeteners in place of molasses to prevent rapid rises and falls in blood sugar and support healthy glucose metabolism. Grogan also suggests using nutritional formulas that contain specific ingredients to support healthy glucose levels in the body, “These can play a major role in reestablishing a normal healthy balance in hormone and energy production.” Specific, key nutrients that can support glandular, muscular and liver function include: Alpha Lipoic Acid, a potent fat and water soluble antioxidant, which directly supports and maintains glucose levels within the normal range, and helps
HOW TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY EQUINE METABOLISM By Jack Grogan, CN, CFO - Uckele Health & Nutrition What does a healthy equine metabolism look like? A healthy metabolism produces energy efficiently for the optimal health, balance and function of all the cells and tissues of the body. This occurs with a minimal amount of distress and/or production of toxic by-products, and is largely dependent on a healthy, balanced relationship between the endocrine glands, their hormones and their target tissues. Unfortunately, imbalanced metabolisms are becoming more common with the major contributing factors of highly processed feeds, incomplete nutrition, multiple stresses and a more toxic environment. This can cause the tissues of the body to become more easily stressed, inflamed and damaged. Jack Grogan, Certified Nutritionist and Chief Science Officer for Uckele Health & Nutrition, has analyzed the metabolic trends and patterns in horses for 20 years, and has developed nutritional products with the Uckele team that successfully address imbalances and significantly decrease the display of a very broad spectrum of disorders. Grogan explains, “The effects of an imbalanced metabolism can show itself in various ways depending on the genetic strengths and weaknesses of the horse or horses involved. It is very common for hoof, joint and connective tissue issues to occur as a result of imbalanced hormonal
changes, especially relative to cortisol and insulin. These same imbalances can also contribute to excessive weight gain, fat patches, decreased energy, skin issues, allergic reactions, or decreases in body weight, especially muscle mass. Your horse may be more easily stressed or spooked, or show unpredictable behaviors and general instability in form and function.” The broad spectrum of issues that can be generated from imbalanced metabolic function occurs because the hormone imbalances associated with this can have very different effects in different horses even though the underlying cause is the same. To add to the complicated list of behaviors or disorders that can show as a result of metabolic imbalance, Grogan points out that some of the causes that contribute to metabolic imbalances can also be the effect of those imbalances, such as the inability to adjust or compensate for stressful events (internal or external), accumulation of toxicity, excessive inflammation and over or under-production of hormones. Other causes of stressed, inefficient metabolisms also include over-exercising or other very high intensity training, excessive heat or cold, travel and socialization issues. The good news is that there are some answers, “Bringing a metabolism back into balance will include a number of changes,” Grogan says, “First are feed changes that include a low-glycemic

reduce normal oxidative stress. L-Carnitine is an amino acid that supports healthy glucose and fat metabolism. Cinnamon is an aromatic bark that helps support healthy glucose, fat metabolism and normal blood sugar levels. Niacinamide is a member of the vitamin B-complex family that helps support cells in the pancreas to aid with the transport of glucose. Taurine is an amino acid that helps support sugar metabolism and normal liver function. Tyrosine is an amino acid precursor for the thyroid and adrenal glands that aids normal hormone production by these glands, which can support healthy glucose metabolism. Magnesium is a major mineral that supports cellular energy production, healthy glucose metabolism and helps reduce the negative effects of stress. Chromium Yeast is a trace mineral that supports normal, healthy glucose metabolism and helps maintain a balanced blood sugar level. It can be difficult for novice riders to 'feel' a correct shoulder-in. An eye on the ground or a mirrored arena can help the novice figure out just what a 30-degree angle looks and feels like (most novice riders attempt too great an angle when they begin riding shoulder-in). Again, think of the first step of a 10meter circle but instead of continuing on that circle, hold the shape that the horse takes and continue riding parallel to the wall. The rider should sit slightly heavier on the inside seat bone with the inside leg driving at the girth and the outside leg slightly back to keep the haunches from falling out. The rider should feel the horse's inside hip drop as he reaches under and across. At the first step of shoulder- in, the rider's torso and shoulders should begin to spiral as though they are riding a 10-meter circle. Then they should stay parallel to the horse's shoulders as the horse continues along the arena wall. The inside rein positions the head slightly to the inside. The outside rein redirects the horse's motion from continuing on a circle to going down the rail at a 30degree angle from it. Many novices make the common error of pulling on the inside rein to position the horse's head and neck, bringing the head and neck over to the inside rather than moving the horse's shoulders over. If the rider peeks down, the horse's neck and head should still be aligned with the center of the chest. If the neck is bent but the shoulders are still parallel to the wall, the rider has not coordinated the corridor of aids clearly in a way the horse understands. Remember, the shoulder-in is simply the first step of the circle. Go back to the basic circle when the shoulder-in falls apart. Try to maintain the circle shape and move the horse from your inside leg.
LATERAL WORK: PROGRESSING TO SHOULDER-IN By Nancy Wesolek-Sterrett, Dressage Dept. Head As a young horse progresses up the training tree, we add lateral movements to his re p e r t o i re o f g y m n a s t i c exercises. Leg yielding and shoulder-in are basic lateral exercises that strengthen the horse's hindquarters, develop his balance, stretch and 'straighten' his body by developing his muscles equally on both sides. To ride these exercises correctly, the rider needs to understand the corridor of aid pressures that asks the horse for a particular exercise. Then the rider needs to coordinate the application of those individual aids correctly, in the moment, for a particular horse at its current level of understanding. Leg yielding (covered in a previous article) asks the horse to move forward and sideways at the same time while his spine stays parallel to the rail. Shoulder-in is the first lateral movement that asks the horse to bend through the ribcage as he moves on a straight line. To perform a shoulder-in correctly, the horse must not only bend through his ribcage but also stretch his inside hind leg further under his body. As the inside hind leg stretches and reaches under the body, the horse's inside hip drops more than it does in a normal forward stride. This requires a greater muscular effort as the horse shifts his weight onto the inside hind leg and moves forward. So, as he works in both directions, the young horse gradually develops the stronger muscles he needs in order to engage his hindquarters, stay in balance and move straight along a t r a c k . Fo r t h i s re a s o n , shoulder-in is also considered a collecting exercise. Standing in front of a horse
performing a shoulder-in, an observer should see the horse's feet moving on three tracks: the inside front foot on one track, the outside front foot and inside hind foot on a middle track, and the outside hind foot on a third track. If the horse is moving along a rail or wall, the observer will see the horse's shoulders moving at about a 30-degree angle to the wall. Another way to visualize this is to think of the horse taking the first step of a 10-meter (just a little less than 33 feet) circle then holding that 'shape' or degree of bend as he continues moving down the rail. A young horse with underdeveloped muscles may try to evade the demands of shoulder-in by angling his shoulders out too far so he can leg yield on four tracks rather than engage, bend and move on three tracks. He may try to bend his neck without moving his shoulders away from the wall; a novice rider may also encourage this by asking with incorrect aids. Depending on his personality, he may slow down or quicken to avoid the new muscular effort. In the beginning, the rider's coordination of the corridor of aids for shoulder-in will be constantly correcting and adjusting the horse's position until his muscles develop enough that he is physically comfortable performing a shoulder-in. Leg yielding on a circle is one exercise that helps the rider coordinate the aids correctly for a shoulder-in. As the horse travels on a circle, the rider gradually enlarges the circle by leg yielding or spiraling out. Once the horse does this comfortably, progressing to a shoulder-in along a straight line becomes much simpler.

The rider must maintain correct hand position on either side of the horse's withers when asking for shoulder-in. A novice rider may cross her outside rein over the horse's neck in an effort to keep the horse from falling back to the rail. If the rider maintains a straight line from elbow to bit, she has a better chance at controlling the horse's shoulders and maintaining the shoulder-in. Many riders draw their inside leg up as they apply it. When this happens, they come off their inside seat bone and shift their weight onto their outside seat bone. Then, as their horse shifts his balance to compensate for the rider's shift, his shoulder falls to the outside, and then the rider usually ends up pulling on the inside rein in an attempt to maintain shoulder-in.The rider must maintain energetic forward movement and a consistent rhythm when asking for a step in shoulder-in. If the rider does not maintain forward energy with a driving inside leg, some horses will shorten their stride to avoid dropping their inside hip and reaching under. If the rider does not use outside leg to keep the hindquarters in alignment, the horse may throw them to the outside and leg yield (four tracks) instead of performing a shoulder-in (three tracks). When shoulder-in is not working, regroup by riding a circle. As the circle touches the wall, take one step along the rail and then go back to circling. Gradually increase to two steps along the wall, then three, etc. Go slowly in asking a young horse to increase the number of steps in shoulder-in. A novice horse or rider will increase in understanding of the aids with each attempt. ©2010 Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre. semen, can be stored for later use. The semen is collected at stallion owner's convenience and frozen for shipment at a time when a mare owner requests it. “At this time, conception rates with frozen semen remain at about 50 percent,” says Berk. “Even with this, there are many critical factors for success.” Berk notes that proper collection techniques, with a close-to-sterile environment, are crucial to the success of conception with frozen semen. “The stallion should have a progressive motility, upwards of 50 percent at the bare minimum,” she says. In cases where mares and stallions reside in the same vicinity but owners prefer to avoid live cover because of risk of injury or disease to both horses, fresh semen can also be used to inseminate a mare in estrus. The semen must be used immediately after it is collected to ensure its potency. Regardless of the way the semen is managed, insemination of the mare needs to be performed by a veterinarian under sterile conditions. The semen is inserted into the mare's vagina using special instruments. In order for the procedure to result in conception, the mare must ovulate 12 hours before or six hours after insemination. Determination of ovulation is tricky, and one of the most challenging aspects of artificial insemination. Methods include daily ultrasounds while the mare is in estrus, and sometimes injections of medications that induce ovulation.
METHODS OF MATING By Audrey Pavia, Green Grass Features Once upon a time, all you needed was a stallion and mare to make a baby. But times have changed, and these days, you have a variety of options besides good old-fashioned mating when you want to produce a foal. Veterinary science now enables breeders to create a pregnancy without the stallion and mare ever laying eyes on each other. Through various methods of artificial insemination, horses can reproduce while thousands of miles apart. Of course, the tried and true method of putting a live stallion with a live mare also still works, and can be controlled or handled naturally. The method of choice lies primarily with the mare owner. A.I. Artificial insemination is growing in popularity in the horse world, and with good reason. Impregnating a mare using artificial insemination saves the mare owner the expense of shipping the mare to the stallion for breeding. It's safer for the mare, too, since she's not exposed to the illness and injury that sometimes comes during transport or while staying at a breeding facility. Artificial insemination also gives mare owners the chance to breed to stallions that are too far away for transport. “Perhaps your mare is a nervous type, or age or physical disability makes travel undesirable. Or it could be that the stallion of your choice is beyond your geographic reach,” says Karen Berk, owner of Equine Reproductive Services in Ocala, Fla., a mobile service
that specializes in artificial insemination. “Transported semen may be perfect for your mare. When properly timed and executed, it has a very high percentage of conception on first cycle, with less risk and expense.” Stallion owners also benefit significantly from artificial insemination. Stallions no longer have to take time off from the show season to breed mares. They are also not limited to the number of mares that can be shipped to them for breeding. With artificial insemination, a stallion can impregnate mares from all over the world without ever leaving the farm. Artificial insemination starts with the collection of semen from the stallion. Using a dummy mare, the stallion deposits semen in a collection tube or artificial vagina. The semen is then cooled and transported to the mare owner, or frozen and stored for later use. In the case of cooled semen, the mare owner has a limited amount time to have the mare inseminated after the semen has been collected. The semen is shipped immediately after collection, and the mare is inseminated within hours after the semen arrives. Mare owners are responsible for determining when the mare ovulates to ensure she is fertile at the time of insemination. Cooled semen is reported in some studies to have anywhere from 65 to 91 percent success rate. The fertility of the mare is a crucial aspect in this success. Frozen semen, although not as potent as cooled

Controlled Breeding Before artificial insemination became a reality in the horse world, controlled live cover was the norm. Still a (54)
popular method of getting two horses together to make a foal, controlled breeding involves bringing the mare to the stallion and handling both horses carefully throughout the breeding process. In controlled breeding, the mare is usually exposed to a teaser stallion first to prepare her for breeding. Once the mare is ready to accept the stallion, the breeding stallion is brought to the breeding shed where the mare is restrained by a handler. She may even be hobbled to prevent her from kicking the stallion and causing possible injury. The stallion is handled with a stud chain attached to a lead rope and allowed to mount the mare. Once he has ejaculated, he is quickly led away. The benefit to controlled breeding is that it can be less expensive than artificial insemination if the mare doesn't have to travel far to get to the stallion. Veterinary and shipping costs associated with artificial insemination are eliminated since all you need are two good handlers to get the job done. The downsides to controlled breeding are the possibility of injury to both the horses and the handlers. Mares can kick stallions, stallions can strike at mares, and handlers can get caught in the crossfire. Controlled breeding also poses the risk of contagious diseases being spread, including venereal disease. Plus, this method doesn't always result in a foal since the mare may not be at her most fertile at the time of the mating. Despite these issues, c o n t r o l l e d b re e d i n g i s preferred by many breeders and required by the Jockey Club in order for a Thoroughbred foal to be registered. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM
Pasture Breeding The oldest method of horse breeding is pasture breeding. In this situation, a stallion is allowed to roam with a harem of mares, breeding them at will. These days, not many breeders practice this method since it provides for very little control. Ironically, pasture breeding offers the highest fertility rate of all the breeding methods. Stallions used in pasture breeding become experts at detecting when a mare is in estrus. They know exactly when to breed, thus increasing the likelihood of the mare becoming pregnant. A pasture stallion will cover a mare as often as 10 times in one day, making the chances of fertilization particularly high. Mares offer very little resistance during pasture breeding since they have had time to become acquainted with the stallion before they come into season, thus increasing the chances of
fertilization. The disadvantages to pasture breeding include not knowing the exact date when a mare has conceived, making it difficult to predict a foaling date. There is also a risk of injury since the horses are mating without supervision of a handler. Venereal disease is also a possibility since pasture breeding involves several mares being bred interchangeably by the same stallion. For many breeders, pasture breeding is not practical. The method isn't suitable for visiting mares, but only works for broodmares that live in a herd situation with the breeding stallion. Mare owners have different options when it comes to breeding techniques, each with its pros and cons. The method you ultimately choose depends on which method works best for you and your horse.

“How do I put into words the love, gratitude and admiration I have for the best horse I have had the privilege of having in my life for the last 17 years. Rusty is 30 years old now, but in his time he has shown PtHA, Equestrian Team and 4-H. At 15, he had National Top Ten Standings in 3 Speed Events. Well into his 20’s he was carrying kids to wins in speed and western events. He has also spent countless hours patiently carrying new riders around the arena, while they learned to ride, making them work for every step. He taught me how to turn a barrel, gallop carefree through the woods and the desire to strive to always be a better horseman. His character, personality, and class has given him a forever place in my soul, as well as in the hearts of all those who’s lives he has touched. We Love You Rusty, Forever!” ~ Amber Fox, Highland, MI

Cindy Lou’s
ZOO ROSCOMMON, MI
6327 M-18, Roscommon, MI 48653 • (989) 275-4500
ZOO RETURNED TO “ORIGINAL” OWNERS Family health issues within the Couturier family forced the sale of Cindy Lou’s Zoo in 2008. It was sold on land contract on September 30th. After two years, the business has been returned to Cindy and Bill Couturier, the original owners of the Zoo - Cindy is also the owner of Saddle Up! Magazine. The Zoo owners of the past two years claimed that financial difficulties were the sole reason for defaulting on the land contract agreement. Cindy and Bill Couturier will be running the zoo with their son, Jason, and daughter in-law, Arlette Couturier. “Our main focus at this time is to get the animals on proper diets and in clean and safe enclosures,” says Cindy Couturier. “We were very sad to see that many of the original animals that were sold with the zoo are now deceased. The animals that are currently on the grounds are thin and have been fed sub-standard diets. The bobcats were being fed Friskies cat food and the fox were on Retriever brand dog food from WalMart,” reports Couturier. “I am hopeful that all the animals here will be able to be restored to their original splendor with proper care,” adds Couturier. The people at Cindy Lou’s Zoo do have a lot of work ahead of them. No repairs were made within the last two years to equipment or grounds and any spot that was not within the public’s eye was not cleaned or kept up within that time period. They will be doing their best to restore the Zoo and its inhabitants to their original condition. If you would like to keep track of the Couturier family’s progress, please follow them on Facebook for more up to date information. Just search for them under “Cindy Lou’s Zoo.” (Look for the Zoo logo.) Many people have asked how they can help the Zoo. The Couturiers are accepting monetary donations which will be used for animal feed. Used towels, baby toys, quality hay and straw are also needed. Cindy Lou’s Zoo will re-open in the spring of 2011 under the capable management of the Couturier family. April and May they will be open Saturdays and Sundays, 11am to 6pm. June, July and August hours are 7 days a week, 11am to 6pm. September and October they will be open Saturdays and Sundays, 11am to 6pm. Please visit them online at www.cindylouszoo.com.

HOFFMAN’S HORSE MINERALS Alberta, Canada’s #1 Selling Mineral NOW Available in Michigan! PRODUCED SINCE 1994
• IDEAL FOR OLDER HORSES “We have found that Hoffman’s Horse Minerals are great for old and/or arthritic horses. It limbers them up and helps them utilize their food better so that they gain in conditioning. Therefore, it enables older performance horses to stay sound longer.”
• IMPROVED COAT “Our senior stallion, Skip Zan Parr, had a hair coat that easily sunburned in the summer. Once we started feeding him our minerals, we could leave him without a summer sheet and his coat glowed! We would never show again without this positive benefit.” - Lorne & Marian Hoffman
THESE MINERALS CONTAIN ALL THAT YOUR HORSES NEED FOR OPTIMAL PHYSICAL & MENTAL HEALTH. See our website for ingredient list and testimonials: www.gordonfarm.com
