How much? I prefer to limit fat intake to no more than 10% of the total calories, though some athletes are fed levels as high as 20%. For the lightly exercised, mature 1100 lb (500 kg) horse, the National Research Council recommends a minimum total diet of 20 Mcals per day to maintain body condition. Ten percent would be 2 Mcals per day from fat. One cup (8 fluid ounces or 240 ml) of oil will meet this requirement. It weighs 240 grams and at 9 kcals/g, provides 2.16 Mcals.

A variation in hormone levels, for example, can have a temporary effect on how the horse sees the world. Just as reaction to sugar intake varies in humans, so it does in horses. Horses may feel ill or “off” from an overindulgence in sugar/starch, and they certainly have been reported to exhibit “sugar highs and lows” caused by the sudden surge and subsequent drop in blood glucose from a high carbohydrate (sugar/ starch) meal. Although there is, in fact, little scientific evidence that proves a sugar/starch-driven behavioral component, many horse owners will attest to their own horses showing adverse behavioral responses and will therefore avoid feeding anything that contains starchy cereal grains or is sweetened with molasses. There are plenty of good reasons beyond the scope of this article to avoid high sugar/high starch diets, but in terms of behavior, what alternative does a horse owner have if the horse simply needs more calories? Hay and grass simply cannot provide enough energy (calories) to support the additional requirements created by exercise, work, and performing. The answer is fat. Gram for gram, fat provides more than double the calories of carbohydrates or protein. And it is well digested. But there's an added bonus! Fat has a calming effect on horses' behavior. Researchers at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute noticed that horses fed a high fat diet are less reactive to startling stimuli

and had lower levels of excitability and anxiety than horses fed a more traditional grain-based diet. The horses in their experiment received 15% of the total calories from fat, which is high for most horses. However, the study reveals that fat is worth trying if you have a sensitive horse who may become easily excited by everyday activities.2 (Please note: Ponies, minis, donkeys, and mules should not receive high fat diets.3)

How to add fat? When adding any amount of oil to your horse's feed, start with a

What type of fat? All fat has the same number of calories, regardless of the source. But from a health perspective, it is best to steer clear of animal fats, as well as oils that are have too many omega 6s (which increase inflammation) in relation to omega 3s (which have an antiinflammatory effect). Oils high in monounsaturated fatty acids are a good source since they neither increase nor decrease inflammation. Below are some commonly fed oils: • Flaxseed oil: Has a 4:1 ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s, making it an ideal choice • Canola oil: 10% omega 3s and relatively low in omega 6s. Also contains monounsaturated fatty acids (no harmful impact on inflammation) • Rice bran oil: Only 1% omega 3s but low in omega 6s and high in monounsaturated fatty acids • Soy lecithin: Only 4% omega 3s but also contains choline, a helpful component of neurotransmitters • Soybean oil: Only 7% omega 3s and mostly omega 6s (less desirable choice) • Corn oil: No omega 3s and

Most horses do not like oily feed, but more important, it takes several weeks for the horse's cells to become accustomed to metabolizing more fat. Summary Short attention span, spookiness, reluctance to work, excessive sensitivity and alertness to surroundings, irritability, and “hot” behaviors can be reduced by adding fat to the diet. Fat is high in calories, so limit the amount you feed based on the horse's weight and his caloric need. Omega 3s need to be in balance with omega 6s, so choose oils carefully. And finally, build up to desired intake by starting slowly and increasing over 4 to 6 weeks.

AAEP & AVMA NEWS AAEP, AVMA Call for Passage of H.R. 6388 - Amendments to the Horse Protection Act November 19, 2012: Today the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Equine Practitioners issued a joint statement of support for the Amendments to the Horse Protection Act, H.R. 6388. “Soring is an unconscionable abuse of horses that is used to produce a high- stepping gait—the “Big Lick”—and gain an unfair competitive advantage in the show ring. For decades we've watched irresponsible individuals become more creative about finding ways to sore horses and circumvent the inspection process, and have lost faith in an industry that seems unwilling and/or unable to police itself. The AVMA and AAEP are committed to strengthening the USDA's ability to enforce the Horse Protection Act and ending this abuse for good. We strongly encourage everyone who cares about the welfare of horses to contact their member of Congress and urge them to pass H.R. 6388,” said Dr. Doug Aspros, AVMA President. The elementary school field trip program is well underway, under the capable management of Tammy Tyler Howe. Several schools have already confirmed their attendance for the coming year, and more are very interested. We're looking at an exceptional program being put together for the elementary program, which is continuing to grow in both interest and attendance. We also invite all association queens to participate with this program (what a wonderful chance for them to complete some of their "volunteer hours"). We are planning a special introduction of

any and all participating Queens prior to the Rodeo on Friday night, on horses if possible, if not, then in the hitch wagon! If your organization has a queen that would be interested in participating, please contact Marilyn Graff with that information. C e n t e r, S e p t 2 8 – 3 0 . Competitors came from across the United States, including Michigan, Illinois, Florida, California and other states. Four individuals from Michigan, Tennessee, Arkansas and California judged the 3-day event. Riders competed on Friday and Saturday. The top ten riders in each division then came back for a third round to compete on Sunday. Over $35,000 in cash and prizes were awarded. Championship saddles were awarded in all 8 divisions, as well as champion and reserve champion buckles in each division. Numerous other prizes were also awarded. Prize money included 50% payback of entry fees in addition to AHCA adding $5,000 split across all divisions. BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS The BTRA Poker Ride is one of our organization's oldest traditions, and it was held again this year. Originally scheduled for Saturday, October 20th, it had to be postponed for one day due to a gloomy forecast for Saturday. As it turned out, Saturday's weather wasn't all that bad but Sunday's was great. We had a good turnout, a potluck featuring hot dogs and chili, and we all enjoyed the amenities of the Brighton Recreation staging area. Once again, our new pavilion was put to good use and our electric water pump provided cool fresh water for our horses. The riders with winning poker hands walked away with cash prizes and our president, Russ Spicer, won the 50/50 drawing. Of course, he immediately donated his winnings back to BTRA. We held our last outdoor event on November 10th, an open ride that was well attended. That Sunday was unusually warm, especially for November, so we feel pretty lucky this year with the way the weather has cooperated. Granted, we had some hot weather but all our big events came off, even with the delay for the Poker Ride. Thank you, Mother Nature! Now we're gearing up for our a n n u a l C h r i s t m a s Pa r t y, scheduled for December 1st. For the past several years, this has been a combined event with our friends and neighbors, the Pinckney Trail Riders. This arrangement makes sense because it allows us to combine our resources and increase attendance, and we've all been very satisfied with the results. Our two clubs have been holding this party at the Howell Nature

Center, which has a number of facilities suitable for events of this nature. It's always been a potluck and has featured a variety of games and group activities. This year, we're trying something quite different. We're holding the party at a restaurant located in Hamburg, RJ's Grill. It won't be a potluck but instead will offer a buffet dinner for all the guests who don't have to bring anything but their appetites. We'll still have a game or two, but we're also going to have a DJ and dancing. We're telling everyone to wear their dancing boots! We're pretty excited about this new arrangement and will be sure to give everyone a report in the next BTRA column. Mark Delaney BTRA Secretary

Club members did a lot of trail riding during the nice days in November, the weather was just beautiful, sure wish it would last all winter. Our club is open to any woman 18 years old or over. Equine Ladies is a great resource for meeting new horse people, finding someone to ride with and learning about equine related subjects. There will also be a silent auction to raise funds for MiCMO and allow us to continue to give back to the friends of trails clubs from the areas where we ride. Our riders went trick or treating on a two mile loop trail, participated in the costume contests, played some games and had a delicious potluck lunch. had waited 13 years to open. Though it was a very cool day, we had a potluck dinner at our pavilion. The warm food was so yummy. Thanks to all who attended. A large number of riders from other trail groups attended and rode our different loops. The lake loop connects to our west loop, with scenic views of the lake making it a lovely ride, especially during a full moon. Made wide enough for cart driving and wagons, it is useful for various events. Special permission is not necessary to drive it. We have been working on the signs and plan to order new maps, having them in place by spring. Congratulations go to several of our SHTRA members: Barb Drake and Linda Kraai and their fellow MiCMO teammates of “Gurlz in Gear” who placed 3rd in NACMO, 7 points from first place in this national competitive event. WEST MI APPALOOSA REG The World Championship Appaloosa Show is once again history and we had quite a few members who won and placed well out there this year. Congratulations to all of you! Any member in default of dues shall be suspended from all membership privileges. If dues are not paid within (30) days membership shall terminate. A new membership application may be made with dues included, an exception will be made for new memberships when dues are paid at the end of the riding season, but not before August 31. So I drew on the right rein a little more, causing his head to come even more to the right. We did a couple of laps like this and I could feel his mind getting active (usually it is shut down or arguing) so that was good! All of the sudden, he wanted to go straight. He tugged on that right rein (whose contact he was avoiding) and as I allowed the rein to slip slowly through my hand, he straightened his neck, stretched his topline and lengthened his stride. I was shocked! After several strides, he shortened and started to go crooked again, so I did the same thing. This time it worked even quicker. Pretty soon I could pick up the reins and he stayed straight and forward, taking the contact. It was really cool. As soon as it started to go well at the walk, I moved on to the trot. Same thing happened: he went short, bunched up and crooked. Once again I said, “Let me help you!” and I helped him to be more crooked. This was such fun.

How often have you found yourself counteracting something your horse does? It's natural for us humans to exert our will (direct line thinking) rather than take the horse's idea and cause him to turn it around (lateral thinking). For as long as I can remember, Pat has been saying, “Cause your idea to become the horse's idea, but understand the horse's idea first.” Well, isn't it interesting how long something apparently simple like that can take to sink in? I'm finally starting to understand how to truly do that and it has led to a major breakthrough with my horse, Allure. Over the past five years, my journey with Allure has been challenging because of his extreme Left-Brain Extrovert Horsenality, and his tendency to go extreme Right-Brain Introvert as a learner. Here's what I love about it: because of those challenges, Allure has made me a better horseman and teacher. The best thing he helped me come up with is the Horsenality Profile, a major breakthrough in reading, understanding and becoming more effective with horses. In this article, I want to share with you how I used the principle of understanding Allure's idea when riding to not only get him to want to go straight, but be more relaxed and not feel like bucking. It's a great lesson in reverse psychology because you do the opposite of what the horse expects (and what you want to do!). Lucky for us, Amy Bowers was visiting and just happened to have her camera with her!

Day 1 Usually when I begin to ride Allure, he's a bit tight. He doesn't want to go straight and if I push him he'll buck. So I spend a lot of time in walk until he relaxes and then try to do some trot. It kind of works, but it takes a lot of time and I don't feel like we've really made any progress because the next time it's no better. He also doesn't like going into anything that looks like a dressage arena and gets quite shut down — Right-Brain Introvert. Then when he comes out of it, he goes LeftBrain Extrovert and is very challenging to ride! I decided to use the Game of Contact because of the great success I'd been experiencing with it helping horses to get more confident and more forward. As I picked up the reins, he started fussing with the bit, shortened his neck, body and stride. As we inched forward, he started to go crooked. At first I tried to straighten him, and then I thought of the principles of the Game of Contact, so I changed my approach and encouraged him to go more crooked: “You want to be crooked, let me help you!”

Again, a couple of laps and all of the sudden he wanted to go straight. I allowed the rein to slip through my fingers as he stretched his top line and lengthened his stride. This time he started blowing out. Success!

Tension was leaving, and understanding was growing. We made half a lap and I stopped him, got off and praised the heck out of him. It was hard to stop just when it was starting (34)

to work, but I knew it was the best thing. Remember, we are not riding for today, we are riding for tomorrow!

Day 2 Walking into the arena today was completely different. Instead of having thresholds, he strode willingly and confidently into the arena. He wanted to be there. It was a great sign. It took about two minutes for him to be straight at the walk, so I began the trot. The first few strides were great, then he went crooked again. “Let me help you!”

This time I needed to have him be even more uncomfortably crooked before he wanted to go straight, but the good part was that there was no stress for him (remember, it was his idea!) and it was still simple, fun and interesting for me. “I wanna be straight!” said Allure. “Sure!” I responded. And it was amazing. Lovely, forward, relaxed trot. I couldn't believe it could be that simple.

After a couple of laps of walking and petting, I went for the canter. It was a little difficult at first, he didn't want to canter, and put in a few little bucks – tiny WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

compared to what they used to be… more like riding a dolphin .

Then he stopped, pooped, and as I gathered my reins when walking off, he lifted into this beautiful, soft canter. Wow.We cantered half a lap, I stopped and then got off and praised him. End of session! I was so thrilled and excited.

Moving Forward Since that day, Allure has been amazingly calm. Playing the Game of Contact for straightness and relaxation has led to being able to ride him FreeStyle – I've waited years for this moment! And on one day, I was cantering him around the Big Top and he got a little over-stimulated by something going on up there. As he wadded up I quickly did the opposite of what I would have usually done: instead of bending him, I helped him wad up. I

remember thinking, “Either this is going to work, or I'm going to help him do the biggest buck ever!” We wadded up together for a few strides and then I felt him ask to go forward instead of up. “Sure!” I said, as I allowed the reins to lengthen. And that was the last time he thought about bucking. So why is this so effective? I think it is because you're giving the horse nothing to argue with, nothing to brace against. As a result, emotions de-escalate and trust and harmony grows. I hope you find a lot of “aha” moments as you read this story and, like me, that you will now understand what it means to truly understand your horse's idea and use lateral thinking to cause him to want to follow your idea. Best of all, it takes all the stress and frustration away… it's fun saying “Let me help you!” PS: I would not recommend using the Let Me Help You approach when riding a horse that wants to run off! Instead, use Partial Disengagement or get off and encourage your horse to go faster when you're on the ground. For more information on the Game of Contact, visit www.parelli.com.

colon, diarrhea from incomplete fermentation, even changes in how well the intestine contracts and moves food along. Inadequate water consumption is the leading cause of impaction. An average size horse needs to consume at least 4 to 5 gallons of water per day even in very cold weather because for much of their journey through the bowel, intestinal contents have a high moisture level, much like soup. In addition to what the horse drinks, fluids are actively secreted along the intestinal tract, then reabsorbed in the terminal portions of the colon. The fluid keeps things moving freely and allows for good mixing, which assists in absorption and fermentation. But how to get them to drink? The horse is most likely to drink while, or shortly after, eating hay, so hay and water should be

Colic can strike at any time and has many well-known and some not so well-understood factors. Fall and winter are particularly high risk times of the year and there are several things you can do to decrease your horse's colic jeopardy during those months. As pastures fail in the fall and horses must switch to a different diet, two major factors are at play. One is the fact there is a different diet. The other is change in the moisture level of the diet. Most people know they should transition slowly when adding or changing grains and other concentrates. However, it is important to realize that a change in forage, including hay types, should also be made gradually. This is because the protein, sugar and starch components of hay are digested in the small intestine, and while digestive enzymes there can adjust to changes, it takes time. Undigested fractions then spill over into the large intestine,

where the resident microorganisms must deal with them. Hays also contain a variety of fiber types and complex plant carbohydrate compounds that can only be fermented in the large intestine. The bacteria, protozoa and, to a lesser extent, yeasts in the large intestine work together to efficiently ferment. For example, some species will ferment starch, sugars and fructans into lactate while others will use that lactate as their fuel, preventing acidosis that could harm the fiber fermenting organisms. The population of organisms in the large intestine will mirror the food that is presented to them but efficient adaptation takes time. Allow at least 5 to 7 days to make a complete change. If that sounds complex, it is. The moral of the story is to avoid rapid changes in diet, including substituting hay for grass and changing hays. Disruptions in organisms that occur with rapid changes can cause gas and possible displacement of the

placed close together. Warm water is consumed more readily. At the very least, water should never be allowed to freeze over. To encourage drinking, add at least one ounce of salt to the feed daily, or dissolve and spray on the hay for picky horses. Intake can be increased by adding warm water to pellets, hay cubes, even sweet feeds. Adding some wheat bran improves appeal. Beet pulp is ideal because it can hold four times its weight in water. The final colic risk factor, especially in winter, is inactivity. Do not reduce turnout and stall the horse unless weather is really severe. When conditions are so bad the horse is barely moving, ensuring adequate water intake goes a long way toward preventing impaction colic.

If the whip that you are using to measure slants down to the cantle, you also could have a saddle that is too narrow in the pommel area or too high of a pommel. This, too, will cause pressure point pain from the saddle in the wither area, right behind the withers, and at the point where the shoulders start. A saddle that is too narrow in the pommel always will cause the saddle to slide back. If this is happening, do not try to improve the fit with a breast collar. Consider a new saddle for your horse! Too high of a pommel could cause the rider to bruise their crotch on the saddle, and that is very painful. If the measuring whip is excessively slanted forward, it usually means that the pommel is too wide. You have to look at the clearance between the pommel and the top of the withers. Use your fingers in a vertical position between the top of the withers and the inside of the pommel. You should have two to three fingers clearance for a correct fit. If you see that the withers are touching, or almost touching, the top of the pommel, or you cannot get two fingers between the two, then this is a very painful fit for any horse, and it will cause injury over time. The fit described in the previous paragraph also happens when the pommel is too wide and the top of the flap panels are too narrow. In addition, a saddle that is too narrow at the top of the flap panels could cause dry spots behind the withers and at the start of the shoulders. This is very painful for the horse, and you will lose your balance forward which will increase the pain for the horse on the withers and on top of the shoulders. Because horses come in all shapes and sizes, it is important to assess the conformation of your horse before you begin looking for a saddle. To evaluate conformation, you have to stand back from the horse a minimum of ten feet to be able to “see” the profile view of the withers, shoulders and back. View the horse from the front as well as this will help you to assess the width of his shoulders. The points of conformation you should assess are: 1. Shoulder width - wide or narrow (see above explanation), 2. Withers - prominent or low. Well-defined, but not exaggerated, withers are the ideal, but are not easily found in stock-type breeds. You need to evaluate whether the withers are short or extend long into the back. Prominent withers show a welldefined bone. Low withers are not well defined and will have muscle mass on each side of the wither bone. 3. Straightness of back - a strong “topped” horse has a strong, straight back. A low topped horse has a back that has a sway to it, meaning it dips down in the center of the back. Once you have found a saddle that seems to match your

horse's conformation, try the saddle on him without a pad. Place the saddle far forward over the top of the withers and slide the saddle back with the direction of the way the horse's hair grows. Slide the saddle until it sits behind the withers. Push, or softly pat, the back of the saddle forward until the front panels come in contact with the horse's shoulders, but do not sit on the shoulders. Next, you should assess the saddle's balance. If you lay a whip across the pommel and the cantle, the whip should be level or slightly uphill towards the back of the saddle. If the whip is not level, you have a saddle fitting problem. If the saddle is lower in the back, then the saddle paneling is not thick enough for the horse. The will cause a real problem for you when riding, as your balance is constantly tipped backwards not good! This also could cause back pain in the horse and even pain in the loin area. If this is happening with your current saddle, you can help the fit with a lift back pad. However, if the pad starts to get worn or slips under the saddle, you again will create a loss of balance when riding or pain to the horse's topline.

of the horse due to the fact that he is willing to work because he feels good and the rider's poor balance is not interfering with his balance. When the saddle fits properly in front, it gives the horse the ultimate freedom of movement in the shoulders. To see the fit of the saddle, you need to stand at the three-quarter view and at least ten feet in front of your horse's shoulder. If it is a new saddle, you may have to push the bottom of the front panel (flat) to bring it in contact with the horse. The top of the flat should rest in perfect contact. The seat panels should sit on the muscles on either side of the spine and not touch the spine. This means that the gullet of the saddle has to be wide enough to allow this to happen. Usually horses that have broad shoulders also have broad backs. If the panels rest on the spine at all, it will cause a great deal of pain for the horse. You can view this by looking at the horse from behind. If your horse is tall and you cannot see the spine or the panels resting on the horse's back, stand on a stool at least ten feet behind him to see. The back panels should make contact with the back and should not be raised up off the back. Selecting the proper tree width is very important. As a rule of thumb, a round, broadshouldered horse with low withers, will need a large tree. A medium tree will fit a horse with more pronounced withers and a narrower, straight shoulder. Remember, to see the bulk of the shoulder, you have to look at the three-quarters front view and stand at least ten feet away. Make sure you look at each shoulder because you cannot see both shoulders at the same time from this position.
