NRCS: Good job, farmers and ranchers! 2013 a banner year for voluntary conservation The 2013 numbers are in and they show the importance of v o l u n t a r y, l o c a l l y b a s e d conservation. Data just released by the Natural Resources Conservation Service shows how the USDA agency in partnership farmers and ranchers across the country conserved and protected natural resources on tens of millions of acres of America's privatelyowned lands last year. To g e t h e r, N R C S a n d conservation-minded farmers, ranchers and other partners: Developed conservation plans for more than 43.8 million acres. Enrolled more than 279,000 acres into conservation easements, setting aside valuable wetlands, grasslands and farmlands. These landscapes help create wildlife habitat, clean air and water and lead to other environmental benefits. Worked with producers in the Ogallala Aquifer region, the nation's breadbasket, to implement conservation practices that use water wisely on more than 70,000 acres. Improved habitat for at-risk wildlife. Two initiatives geared toward the lesser prairie chicken and sage grouse put conservation practices on more than 220,000 acres and 570,000 acres, respectively. Assisted producers in the Mississippi River basin improve water quality, restore wetlands and improve wildlife habitat on more than 255,000 acres. Helped landowners in 9 states improve sustainability and profitability of longleaf pine forests, an iconic forest of the Southeast, on more than 50,000 acres. HAPPY TRAILS SADDLE From the earliest days of the Wild West Shows of Buffalo Bill, Pawnee Bill, the famous 101 Ranch and numerous others, saddles adorned with silver have been prominently featured on the horses of the principal performers. During the Golden Age of the Hollywood western from the early days of sound in 1929 through the mid-1950's, the silver mounted saddles became even more elaborate and some were closely identified with the stars who used them in their films. Many of the early television westerns, from 1947 through 1955, featuring Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and many others were half-hour versions of their theatrical Bwesterns and they used their silver saddles in these productions too. With so-called adult westerns introduced to TV in 1955 with The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, Gunsmoke, and Cheyenne, silver saddles were unfortunately discarded in favor of more realistic working saddles. As a fan of Roy Rogers and all the B-western cowboy stars, I have long admired the fancy silver saddles and tack used in their movies, TV Shows and personal appearances. Through t h e y e a r s , H a p p y Tr a i l s Children's Foundation has acquired three silver saddles and 2 replicas of saddles from the 1800's which we have offered in drawings to benefit the abused children served by the foundation. Recently, we acquired our fourth silver saddle and we are offering it in a drawing that ends during our 4th annual FRIENDS OF HAPPY TRAILS BANQUET on May 17, 2014. (24)
This is a vintage classic silver mounted saddle that any Hollywood cowboy hero would have been proud to own and ride! There is no makers mark or stamp on this saddle and the exact date that it was built is unknown. Due to the style of the matching bridle, I believe it was made in the early to mid '50's. The saddle does not appear to have been used much, if at all, due to the condition. Most likely it has been sitting on a saddle stand in someone's den or living room all these years. The saddle is double rigged with a 15” seat. It is beautifully hand carved with custom engraved silver corner plates, conchas and spots. The stirrups are silver bound and still hang flat to the side of the saddle as they did when new. The stirrups don't look like they have ever had a boot in them. There is a matching rolled leather bridle with silver conchas and ferrules, silver overlaid bit, and reins. The conchas on the bridle and the horn cap on the saddle have real gold spots. The matching martingale is an exact copy of the one used on The Lone Ranger's great horse Silver in the TV series of the 1950's. This is an eye-catching rig that comes with its own colorful custom corona pad and saddle stand made just for this outfit. You don't need to own a horse to enjoy this saddle. It is a museum quality cowboy collectible and one of the greatest conversation pieces you could display in your home! Tickets are only $10 each or 11 tickets for $100. The winner need not be present for the drawing on May 17. The winner will be notified by phone and you may check our website for the winner's name after the drawing, www.happytrails.org. Horse Association & Club News BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS
So far, the beginning of 2014 has not been fun. Much of the nation, including southeast Michigan where BTRA members reside, has seen some really bad weather. Rain, lots of snow, and freezing temperatures have descended on us and as this article is being written, we're only now seeing the thermometer rise above 32 degrees. It's probably accurate to say that no one has hit the trails recently and if anybody did, I question their judgment. Aside from the deep snow (which might be covering an icy base), the sub-zero temps and wind chill can pose real dangers for horse and rider. And if these environmental hazards don't deter you, how do you get your rig through unplowed access roads to staging areas? If you live in the country and have your own spread, you've probably been keeping your horses in the barn a lot more than usual. That's what we've done and during that really cold stretch when it never got above zero, we didn't turn our horses out for three days. Needless to say, mucking out stalls became a big job. BTRA has not really been in hibernation, but we did put most business on hold until we got past the Holidays. Now we're starting to get active again. The Board of Directors is working on our 2014 Schedule of Events, which will be posted on our website and included in the February issue of our newsletter, The Hoofbeats Gazette. We're also reminding our members that their BTRA dues are up for renewal. We've been able to hold the line on dues since our organization was founded in 1997, and not just maintain but increase the level of service to our members. The Board is also starting to discuss the BTRA Annual Membership meeting, which will be coming up in a couple months. Five of our nine
Board seats are up for grabs but we're fortunate in that our election process doesn't compare to what we see in the political arena. It will be very civilized and amicable. So, we're going to endure the rest of our winter season and start to dream about the coming of spring and the start of the 2014 riding season. Our Events Schedule will be posted on our website so be sure to visit us at www.brightontrailriders.com.
Custer Recreation Area to make this trip and camping relaxing and memorable. We will announce more on this event next month after discussion with our park manager. It will be held in the same area as the Spring Campout with all the same services provided by FCHFA. FCHFA club news for 2014 includes a proposal to the DNR to gift an outhouse to the Whitford Lake special event area. This would eliminate fees for the club to rent port-a-johns and some other permit fees. The DNR is seeking permission for approval for this gift. Our pavilion has been delayed because of the Match Fund Grant attached to our donation because of "red tape" with State regulations. Hopefully, this will be worked out soon and a pavilion will be constructed in the day-use trailhead this spring. The DNR is also working on new signage for the entire trail system within the park, to clearly mark all trails. If you have not ridden the horse trails, don't be concerned as the signs and trail markers that are currently used are wonderful. If you have not been to Fort Custer, you are missing a beautiful trail system with 6 creek crossing and a variety of trails that wind around lakes and follow the Kalamazoo River. Our new trailhead is finished and rigs of any size can be accommodated with drive thru parking. There is an outhouse and pitcher pump for water also. Remember to get your Recreation Passport at the Secretary of State for $11 to be able to day ride at no cost at any State Park. FCHFA will have a table in the Trails Room at the Michigan Horse Council Horse Expo March 7, 8 and 9th. We will have our calendar of events, maps and tshirts available at Expo with smiling faces to answer any questions to old and new friends. Please go to our website for current updates for 2014. Any other questions can be directed to Nancy 269-967-3613, Toni

Hello, Trail Riders! Welcome the 2014 ride season in by planning a few rides on our beautiful trail system. So far, we are planning two campouts for the season. The first date to put on your calendars is the Spring Campout over Mother's Day weekend. Camping is scheduled for May 9, 10 and 11th at the Whitford Lake special event area. For any of you not familiar with this area, it is a lovely grassy area with picket poles around the perimeter and a row of pines for high line picketting. You may also use electric fencing and corrals if you so wish. There will be community fire pits, water and a trailer for manure disposal on site for this event. All campers can enjoy a Saturday potluck supper. We will be limiting the event to 25 campsites, so it's recommended to reserve early. Our website will post information on all events at http://fchfa.org. For the Annual Fall Equestrian Campout in September, we have tentatively planned a little different campout. We are waiting for permission from the DNR as we have requested this event be held on September 19th thru the 28th. This 10 day campout will be reservations on a daily fee, with campers coming and going from the sites. This will be a great opportunity for any equestrians that travel a long distance from the Fort

Welcome to February. It's hard to imagine now, but winter is starting to wind down. Just six or eight more weeks of the nasties and we can start riding again. Some of you have been fortunate enough to ride all winter. Others not so fortunate. If you don't have an indoor arena you can use, or if your horse doesn't have winter shoes, zipper up your coat and find a nice flat spot that isn't icy and do some groundwork. I know it's hard to motivate yourself in this weather but it's still a great time to bond with your horse and work on ground manners. Members will soon be receiving an election ballot by email to vote for our new board members and officers. Your opinion is important to the club, so please remember to vote. We will also hold an annual board meeting on February 17 at 6:30 at the Kensington Farm Center. This board meeting is open to all members and we encourage you to attend. Kensington Trail Riders has some great events planned for you this coming year. The date of our Annual Banquet has been moved to March 1 due to scheduling complications with the venue. Please note the new date. We will be holding the banquet at Baker's this year and we have some new things planned for you. Polish your dancing boots and mark your calendars. For reservations please contact Judy (judseifried@gmail.com) or Larry (larry@bireta.com). More details will be sent in an infoshare flyer shortly. Watch for it in your email box. If you are not on our infoshare newsletter, please visit our website for details. They will be posted in a few weeks. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Also upcoming this year will be our Member Appreciation Day on April 26. Appreciation Day is our way to say thanks you to our members . The event will include a free lunch and activities. If you have not yet renewed your membership, please contact Judy (judseifried@gmail.com). Also this year, we will have two campouts - one in spring, one in fall. We will have another Billy Gunn Trail Challenger this year. We hope to benefit the Amvet Post in Milford with this event. We will also have a Circle Ride with Proud Lake to benefit the Michigan Hay Bank. Please keep your eyes open for upcoming flyers and events posted on our website. And remember, when you do get out on the trails this winter, you can report a trail problem on kensingtontrailriders.org. We would appreciate it if you would help keep trails clear. Hope to see you out on the trails soon! MI COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING
As I write this article I am relieved to read a whopping 30 degrees on the thermometer and it is only ten in the morning! After our big arctic blast and then a half an inch of rain to really make a mess of things, I find myself excited that it is going to be above freezing today and the basement is slowly drying up after the invasion of melted snow and rain. This is the first year I have moved one horse to an indoor arena and I have loved it. There were a few days that I deemed too cold to ride but otherwise have enjoyed being able to go to a barn and simply tack up my horse. No worries if the stalls are cleaned or the buckets are frozen. Usually I am the barn owner and must complete chores before being able to ride. This is a different world for me and I am trying to
enjoy it completely. The owner of the barn I am currently at has only been able to ride twice since November and I feel her frustration. Here at MiCMO we are currently looking forward to our annual awards banquet. It will be held at Tony M's in Lansing on February 8th. There will be a social hour from noon to one and then everyone can order off the menu and awards will be given after lunch. This is such a great day to get inspired for the upcoming season and set goals for you and your horse. There are so many great prizes given away at the banquet that everyone goes home with something. Our awards committee is still working hard to order prizes that people need and want. This is my first year making the 100 point club so I get to chose from a list of five things what I would like best. This is a wonderful way to give awards and we all appreciate the extra work that it takes to order and organize everyone's treasures. The silent auction at the banquet is one way that our organization raises money for the upcoming year. Any item can be donated to the auction, horse related or not, and is sold to the highest bidder. With nine rides on the tentative schedule this year it might actually be possible to get perfect attendance. This is a lofty goal with a 1993 GMC pickup and living up to four hours away from some rides. As soon as the ride schedule is finalized we will have them all listed in the events section of Saddle Up! Magazine. Look for our first ride to take place May 17th and 18th at Hadley Hills. This summer the rides are spaced out nicely and on average there are two rides a month. Here's looking forward to another great year of treasure hunting on horseback!
enjoying their horses! Jo Anne Normile, author of “ S a v i n g B a b y. . . H o w O n e Woman's Love for a Racehorse Led to Her Redemption” and a founder of the CANTER rescue will be our guest speaker at our annual winter banquet. “Saving Baby” was voted one of the top 100 books of the year. It is truly a great read on an important part of the horse industry that we should all be aware of. The banquet will be held at Bakers in Milford on Friday, February 28th starting at 6pm. We will have a cash bar until around 6:45 followed by a delicious meal with many food choices. Along with our speaker, we will have a silent auction with a proceed going towards Jo Anne's new rescue the “Saving Baby Equine Charity.” Jo Anne will be available to sign books all evening. We had a huge crowd at our banquet last year and are expecting another full house this year so please RSVP to Cindy Godair at 248-672-0154 or email Efrusy@yahoo.com. Hope to see you there!!!! I am sure there are a few brave souls out on the trails. Please remember that hunting season goes through March in Proud Lake, so wear bright colors and try some jingle bells on your saddle! RANCH HORSE ASSOC. OF MI
Ranch horse association of Michigan is looking forward to a great 2014. Our first show, The RHAM Challenge at Michigan State University will be May 2, 3, 4, 2014. Our showbill is complete and will be posted at the time of this printing on our website miranchhorse.com. We will include Jackpot Trail and Jackpot Cutting, so if you are interested in giving our show a try, in either of these two classes, you do not have to have an ARHA registered horse to compete for Jackpot. The president's position now has a YSTRA email address which is presidentystra@yahoo.com You can use this to correspond with Ron Walker. YSTRA now accepts Credit Cards for purchases. New Year's Day Ride Update: We had 10 hardy riders who braved the cold weather; an exchange student from Germany who loves to ride horses rode the 6 mile with the wild bunch. Our group split up some of us who wanted to get back to the bond fire sooner rode the 4 mile while others rode the 6 mile. The snow covered tree branches and trail gave us a beautiful winter wonderland. We also found it a challenge to follow the trail. A work bee will be scheduled to get our trails marked better for winter riding. Picnic table w/roof Update: Our goal is to put a picnic table with a roof and a place to tie your horse out on the 6 miles. Richard Smith provided a plan at our December meeting, estimated cost to build about $200.00. Richard also donated 50 nylon straps for the bucket brackets we are now selling. These are great for securing your water bucket to a picket post, they will be on sale at the Stallion Expo. WEST MI APPALOOSA REG. The WMAR Red, White & Blue show will have a new date – June 7-8 at the Ingham County Fairgrounds in Mason, MI. This later date will, hopefully, allow a little break for those that hit the three show run first thing in the spring and allow them to come back up to Mason to our show. Keep in mind that stalls still need to be pre-paid at Mason. The WMAR State show will be back in Centreville, MI for July 19 & 20, 2014 with stalls there also needing to be pre-paid. Stalls in the two barns closest to the arena will cost $40.00 and the rest of the stalls are priced at $35.00. We are hoping that some more new stalls will be available to us. I will be handling all stalls for both WMAR and MApHA shows again this year and “first checks received, first reserved” is how it's going to be run! Only shows at Mason and Centreville need to be pre-paid. Shows at MSU do NOT need to be pre-paid, so please do not
