Nottawa Paint Horses Marshall, Michigan By Cindy Johnson | Email: cjquimby@gmail.com Denise Webber and her husband Kevin have owned and operated Nottawa Paint Horses in Marshall, Michigan for the past 32 years. Their farm has been in the same family for over 100 years. Denise is up before it's light and doesn't retire until all is well in the barn and in the pastures. Her love of horses began at the age of 5, when Denise hung on the necks of her grandfather's draft horses and idolized her “coolest aunt ever” who was a rodeo rider. Denise learned to ride on a donkey named Jack, but her first solo ride at the age of 6 was a wild canter down a dirt road on a large pony named Goldie. She said, “I was sunk.” Having found her career early, she is still going strong. Looking around the pastures, there's a mixture of color amongst the 35 horses as all are not paints. The farm name developed when Denise said, “I got tired of looking at red horses. My dad raced quarter horses at Glendale Downs. All their names began with Royal, and they were all reddish in color.” Denise said, “My dad passed away when he was 50, and I got one of his race horses. I used her for barrel racing but ended up turning her into a show horse.” Denise did well in the show ring ranking 6th in the nation in 1997 for Western Pleasure. Her son and daughter were also involved in the farm operation and in showing horses. Her daughter won a lot of Michigan State Champion titles. Denise said, “We had 3 pinto world champions from the barn.” Denise's interests evolved into 15 years of coaching riders in Western Pleasure for Albion College. Students traveled to her farm for lessons since there was no facility at the college at that time. Many continued on in competition after graduation. One of her former college students Elliot Brinker (now a school teacher) is her young horse trainer. He mentored with Denise for 9 plus years. The Webber’s do not have any hired help. Denise said, “I don't employ anyone, the work is all done by volunteers as they learn. If you come here, I'm going to teach you how to do it right.” The horses live outside with ample shelters for inclement weather. About half of the 37 member herd is privately owned and boarded. To help keep her charges healthy, Denise is generous with her distribution of Gut X for any stressed horse. Most of the school horses are in their mid-teens and twenties. Some were donated to the farm when their active careers were over, and some found temporary or extended stays such as when Denise offered to keep her friend's horse through the winter while her friend is treated with chemotherapy for breast cancer. Denise has also taken in horses from friends when horses needed a new home. Denise said, “Our new thing is mustangs. Her friend Cheryl Sigler is currently working with a mustang mare for the Michigan Equine Challenge. She has won the Michigan In-Hand and Under Saddle in a previous mustang challenge. Unfortunately, Denise knows the danger of working with mustangs first hand as one of them kicked off her finger 2 years ago. She said, “This is the true example of a wild horse. We never know all their mysteries.” Denise has served as a judge in the PEP Proud Equestrian Program for the past 25 years, just recently retiring. PEP is an advanced program which measures a 4-H member's knowledge, skills in general 4-H knowledge, horsemanship, selecting and judging, equine science, leadership, and personal development. She also coached for Albion College for 15 years. Denise is still called as the select judge for the Western Pleasure 4-H program on Mackinaw Island and has judged there for the past 10 years. Denise has run her own 4-H club for years. Last year's 4-H group produced 3 grand champions from students aged 8,10, 11, 12, and 14. All came home with ribbons. Denise is helping to start another club this year. Having experience in multiple areas such as Western Pleasure, Halter, Showmanship, English and Hunt Seat, Ranch and cattle roping, she is well rounded. However, Denise said, “With roping, If I actually ever caught a cow, I'd probably drop the rope and scream.” Denise is in her ninth year of the Albion College/Gull Lake Partnership where home-schooled students in grades K-12 can take riding lessons as part of their physical education curriculum. This state-sponsored program benefits over 700 kids in the area. She has been called to speak at the State Capitol in support of this rapidly increasing program. On a regular basis, Denise boards, trains, and teaches the Whole Horse Concept on 15 school horses. She carefully selects her school horses saying, “The criteria to be a good school horse is being a good citizen.” She imparts her knowledge to her group of 130 students 4 days per week. Lessons begin at 9:30 a.m. and end around 4-5 p.m. daily. The barn is open to anyone wanting to take lessons. The indoor arena is equipped for special needs students complete with a wheelchair lamp. About 10% of her students qualify as special needs. Their horses are trained to stand very close and still at the mounting block so that students don't have to lift their legs very high. Her indoor arena was constructed in 2020 and has excellent footing and ample room for lessons and clinics. Her mentor, reining trainer Bill Thomas from Saginaw, Michigan gave a clinic last spring. The farm also has an outdoor arena, a multipurpose riding and driving track, and multiple trails. (14) HTTPS://SADDLEUPMAG.COM/

Nottawa Paint Horses, Cont. Often whole families come to watch their kid's lessons. One feature has proven quite helpful for preventing distractions during lessons. Denise said, “The Mommy Be Quiet Room is an observation area for watchers. If was named that when one of my 5-year-student's mom was trying to instruct her daughter from the rails during a lesson. Her daughter rode up to her mom and told her she would have to be quiet or she'd have to go into the 'Mommy Be Quiet Room'.” This room is heated and has a one-way PA system. Denise still rides on her favorite retired reining horse Faith who is coming on 26 this year. Not limited to just work with horses, Denise is an experienced photographer. Denise said, “I learned from my mom, who was also an oil painter. She passed away young, and I took up the sword.” Ten years ago, Denise went back to school to study photography and sharpen her skills. She said, “In the beginning, I did people, and I still do, but my true love is wildlife. I love the serenity, being behind the camera calms my soul.” Denise has taken pictures for the National Reining Horse Association, and was the official photographer for 5 years for the Michigan Horse Expo held annually in Lansing, Michigan. She recently retired from that post citing the long hours needed to cover everything. Denise was also teaching photography and took some of her students along to capture still shots. She said, “Reiners is what I mostly photograph now. I can tell by the quiver of the horse when it's coming. I know where the pattern is going to happen and being a horse person, the horse tells me what he is going to do.” When she started out, Denise said, “I used to sit down and let the horse come to me, which was pretty crazy with exposing my $5000 camera and having dirt thrown at me from the horse's movements.” Concentrating on the optimum shot, Denise said, “I want to catch not just the stop shot, I want to capture the mood, the person, the horse, the motion, and the emotion involved.” With a consistently unrelenting schedule, Denise has carved out a scenic spot by their creek to go and be renewed for the challenges ahead. She named this location the Nottawa Sippy Creek. She said, “This is the place where I go to relieve stress. My bench and the tranquility of this place is also good for photography. This place is where I come to talk to the Lord and throw it all in the creek. I thank Him for each day and ask him to look after all the people as so many are in need everywhere.” She visits her spot every morning and prays for her horses, her dogs, and her family and friends. Denise said, “I absolutely love what I do, I plan on doing it as long as I can. The 5 Love Languages for Horse Lovers Written by Lisa Kiley | https://www.cashmans.com/ With Valentines Day just around the corner, you might have something special planned with the special person in your life. If you have been with your significant other more than just a little while, they might understand how, when you have horses, it often feels like the real love of your life might have four legs and eat hay. In 1992, author Gary Chapman wrote a book called “The 5 Love Languages, The Secret To Love That Lasts”. The book was a great success and is still often used to help people better understand how they give and receive love. It explains that there are 5 different categories of love language that people express in relation to others and how they like to be shown love in return. The great thing about these tenants is that they don't just apply to romantic love. The ways that we show each other we care and the way that we like to be cared for can extend to friends, family and almost every relationship in our lives. Seeing things from the others' perspective and understanding ourselves in a deeper way is a great way to improve the way we interact. While the horse-human relationship is quite different from person-to-person relationships, examining the way we show love to our horses can help us see what areas we tend to favor and other areas that might need a little more attention. Just like a balanced rider aids the horse in showcasing their best movement, a balanced perspective on how we show how we care can lead to the best and wellbeing for the horses we love. 1. Words of Affirmation – Horses have a keen sense of hearing. Their ears are like radar and move and rotate. When a horse's ears are facing toward you, it typically means that you have their attention. When developing a relationship with a horse, it is important that they are listening for your direction and not diverting their attention to other things that can distract them. If they are giving us their attention, what are they hearing back from us? We know that horses can learn many ques from clucks to kisses, but they can understand tone and inflection. The way that we use our voice can be the difference between reassurance and fear. Next time you are in the barn, think about the way that you talk with your horse while you are interacting. Think about improving the quality of conversation with a kind tone that reflects assurance and affirmation. 2. Quality Time – Horses require a lot of time and attention. But how much of that is quality time? We might be spending a lot of time in and around the barn or even planning the next event or show. When you are working with your horse, are you present and in the moment? It is so easy to be distracted, especially when we are typically connected to our phones 24/7. 3. Physical Touch – Have you ever seen what a horse does when a fly lands on their back? Even that lightest of touch can get a big reaction. Horses in a herd use their bodies to communicate with their fellow horses, from the swishing of a tail to the thump of a well-placed hoof. When we work with horses, we need to realize that the way that we move around them should include lots of 'hands on' activities. From grooming sessions to tacking up, a gentle hand is something your horse will appreciate. When it comes to working with your horse, start light cues rather than heavy hands or heels. The relationship of a horse and rider is nearly totally dependent on a physical connection. It's important that we think about the ways that we can work in partnership with the horse rather than trying to use more forceful tactics.

4. Acts of Service – When it comes to horses, almost everything we do can seem like an act of service. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that we are the ones who want to have horses in our lives and for all the fun and fulfillment we find in this partnership, it does require a good amount of effort to uphold. Horses need daily care, and it is our responsibility to provide that. This includes educating ourselves to provide the best quality of care. Horses require specific diets, adequate shelter, veterinary and farrier care along with regular grooming, exercise and turnout. Cross-Training with Western Dressage Let’s get ready to show and grow! By Lynn Palm | http://www.lynnpalm.com/ Are you passionate about becoming a true partner with your horse? I know I am, and I'm here to help you achieve that goal. Training for Western Dressage will help with any western discipline with or without cattle! For this next series on training, you'll be your own trainer for 80 to 90 percent of the time. You will learn to find those remarkable feelings when both you and your horse come into balance, regardless of discipline. Being in the Dressage Court (arena) will help you attain that balance. We all want those feelings with a horse, regardless of what saddle you're riding or what breed of horse you swing a leg over. We all dream of moments of being in synchronization with our horses. These moments keep us hungry to learn more and achieve more difficult tasks with our horses. Remember, this Western Dressage discipline will steal your heart and create a passion for riding in harmony with your horse. Remember, dressage is simply the foundation to ride correctly, and for the horse to be confident and willing with whatever performance you choose! I'm looking forward to the next several months, when I'll share tips and guidelines for understanding the simplicity of learning (in written format, at least) Western Dressage training from Introductory Level to Level 5. Could be the start of my new book! Western Dressage Level Requirements and Advancing Your Training Starting Levels All the levels in Western Dressage are a systematic, progressive training that produce a horse that is physically strong, balanced, supple, and flexible. This equine athlete also demonstrates a calm, confident, attentive attitude and is willing to do their job – whether performance in the show ring or a weekend trail ride. Tests provide an introduction to the discipline of Western Dressage wherein the horse performs only at the walk and jog. The rider should demonstrate correct basic position, use of basic aids, and understanding of the test figures. The horse should show relaxation, and harmony between horse and rider is essential. The horse accepts the aids and influence of the rider. The jog should be a natural gait within the horse's scope and should demonstrate a swinging back. Introductory Levels: Gaits and Definitions Working Walk: Four-beat, active, energetic walk with reso-lutely forward reaching steps. This horse has a confident stretch to the bit. His head and neck should swing naturally as a result of a relaxed back and shoulder/front legs alignment to the hip/hind legs. The horse's hind feet should touch the ground into or beyond the prints of the forefeet. FEBRUARY 2024 • C & C PUBLISHING, INC. ©2024

Free Walk: A relaxed walk with unconstrained, forward reach-ing steps where hind feet touch the ground clearly in front of the footprints of the forefeet. The horse must be relaxed and be allowed through a loose (no contact) of the mouth, the freedom to lower his head and neck to stretch forward and down and out with the nose. The length of stride, rhythm, the relax-ation and swing through the back of the horse is of great importance. The stretch of the horse is very important to allow the body to lengthen and stretch the top line muscles. The stretch also allows reaching of the hind limb joints to develop the strength and flexibility to compact his body for future direction and requirements and for developing collection. Working Jog: An energetic, regular, two-beat jog. The horse must go forward with even and elastic steps. The hind legs step actively up under the horse with obvious push from the hindquarters as demonstrated from a relaxed top line – thus a swinging back, and reaching for the bit with freedom in the shoulder movement. The horse must be in proper balance and maintain a light contact with the bit. The horse's nose must be on or slightly in front of the vertical. In Introductory and Basic Tests, the Working Jog may be ridden either posting or sitting. Halt: At the halt the horse should stand attentive, engaged, motionless, straight and “square.” Square means the horse's legs are square with the weight evenly distributed over all four legs. The neck should be raised with the poll as the highest point and the head slightly in front of the vertical. The horse should remain “on the bit” by maintaining a light and soft contact with the rider's hands. The horse may “mouth” the bit during the halt, but should be ready to move off at the slightest indications of the rider. For the halt at the beginning and ending of a test, a horse should be immobile at least 3 seconds. In Introductory l Levels, a halt should be at least 4 seconds. Cross-Training with Western Dressage, cont. Learn the “math” of the Dressage Court (arena) by walking it on foot to find the distances that the figures call for in each test. This is really a fun challenge – riding your figures to an exact size or path! Riding with accuracy will teach whether you are doing something correct, or you need to improve on this task. Riding with precision will always help you recognize how your horse understands your communications (aids). The goal is that no one can see you “talking” to your horse! Light and invisible aids is the aim. First learn how to ride the rectangle arena. The long side of the arena is 40 or 60 meters in length. Then there are two short sides of 20 meters in either official arena size. Not only can either arena feel small or difficult to ride along the rail (tangent to the rail – 1 meter is 3.3 feet from the rail) you also have four corners to learn to ride! In the corners you must show that your horse is bending correctly in order to be balanced, as well as going straight after and before each corner. Start with learning this. Training Tips: Make your own arena! It's simple and inexpensive. Set it up in your arena or pasture, but please make sure you have as level and as good a footing as possible. I know you will not regret these arena boundaries for learning how much fun it is to ride with accuracy and precision!

Feeding Horses in Muddy Pastures By Kentucky Equine Research Staff | https://ker.com/ When it comes to horse care, mud makes everything harder. How can horse owners deal with sloppy mud and still provide wholesome meals to their horses? Here are some tips. Keep hay off the ground. That’s not as easy as it sounds, is it? In a perfect world, every horse will consume every stem and every leaf of every flake of hay ever offered. In reality, horses are prone to wasting hay. When it’s muddy, it seems the waste is even more abundant. What to do? Hay feeders that stand off the ground are one option. Horses will yank hay from these feeders, sometimes vigorously, so some hay still hits the ground, but less is wasted. Some of these feeders can hold more than one bale of hay, which can make feeding multiple horses more efficient. For owners that feed round bales, specially designed feeders can keep hay tidy. Be sure to use feeders intended for horses. Feeders engineered for cattle are sometimes not appropriate for horses. Because of height differences between species, small horses and ponies can become trapped in them. One resourceful owner placed old stall mats over a stone base to create a sizeable area in a paddock. She fed hay out of an old, cracked water trough that was anchored to fence posts. Any hay that landed on the mats stayed dry and clean, and fallen hay remained palatable and was easily retrieved by horses. A hose and a stiff-bristled broom was all that was needed to scrub the mats when they became dirty. If the horse is in a pasture or paddock with lots of grass and only areas around feeders are muddy, toss hay into different grassy areas each day. This will keep areas from becoming too churned up from excessive traffic. Provide concentrates in feeders. Many horse owners cringe when horses fling or drop grain onto the stall floor. The same owners wince when horses try to gather dropped grain from muddy ground. How can this be avoided? Deep, weighted feeders are the best bet. Some horsemen have fashioned feeders from old tires by securing a bucket or pan inside the tire. Horses have difficulty overturning a tire even with aggressive pawing. Soft rubber pans are popular, but they are easily flipped or stomped. The deeper the feeder, the harder it is for the horse to sling grain from it. Consider feed form. Certain feed companies provide some formulations as large, easy-to-feed pellets or cubes, measuring about 0.5 inch (1.25 cm). These cubes are convenient for outdoor feeding situations because they can be easily picked up from the ground by horses if dropped. Some managers feed these large cubes directly off grassy ground. Consider pecking order. When feeding a group of horses, be aware of who’s boss and who’s not, and tailor feeding programs to keep mealtimes as peaceful as possible. This is doubly important in mud, as horses will be unable to retreat from aggressive horses as quickly and injuries may occur. One suggestion: place feeders or hay piles far from one another to keep a dominant horse from attempting to control more than a FEBRUARY 2024 • C & C PUBLISHING, INC. ©2024

single feeding station. Thirty to forty feet of space between feeders will generally deter even the most determined alpha horse from seizing more than his fair share.

First-Ever Outdoor Recreation Speciﬁc Bill Passes House Committee The Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act passed the House Natural Resources Committee on January 17, 2024 by unanimous consent. The EXPLORE Act is historically significant as it is the first-ever outdoor recreation specific bill package and does not cost taxpayer dollars. The bipartisan legislation will boost local and national economies, give more Americans – especially those in underserved areas – greater access to green spaces and public lands and waters, while also modernizing policies and procedures to support the recreation businesses that connect people to outdoor experiences. The EXPLORE Act is a companion to a similar package passed in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee last year, America’s Outdoor Recreation Act (AORA). This passing of this act underscores the momentum the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR), along with the American Horse Council (AHC) and other industry partners have built over the past few years to advance bipartisan policies that improve access and transform outdoor recreation opportunities. The outdoor recreation industry, which in 2022 was valued at $1 trillion by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis, was instrumental in passing the Great American Outdoors Act in 2022, which was one of the greatest public lands and waters packages to become law in the history of our nation. “The AHC supports the EXPLORE Act because it protects access for horses and packers on public lands,” says Julie Broadway, President of the American Horse Council. “Maintaining and expanding trail access on public lands ensures the next generation of horseback riders can explore and recreate safely alongside other users. The inclusion of language to identify and adopt policies to promote conflict avoidance on multiple use trails is extremely important for the welfare of all users, and especially those who are riding or packing. AHC also commends the inclusion of the MVP Act (Military and Veterans in Parks Act) which holds the potential to expand access for Veterans and Active-Duty military as there are proven therapeutic benefits associated with outdoor recreation and Equine assisted service/therapy.” The AHC applauds the hard work of industry leaders and the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. "(This) marks a major advancement for the future of outdoor recreation in the United States,” says Jessica Wahl Turner, the ORR president. “With the House Natural Resources Committee's markup of the EXPLORE Act, we are moving closer to enacting legislation that will revitalize our approach to recreation management and access. Compassionate Leadership Kim Cardeccia | https://confidencethroughconnection.com/ Recently, I had been asked about how interacting with horses can help us live our lives in the direction of our choosing rather than default. Since this question came up many times, I thought it could be helpful to share it with you here. Just in case you need more reasons to hang out with your horse! Living by design involves consciously reprogramming our subconscious, which is crucial because around 90% of our actions stem from it without conscious intervention, perpetuating habitual patterns. This parallels the practice of compassionate leadership with horses, requiring deliberate intention and action to break free from automatic behaviors. Developing compassionate leadership with horses teaches us that connecting with their essence – be it healing wounds, learning trust, or redefining concepts like leadership – parallels the steps needed to lead our lives intentionally. It involves understanding trauma, embracing learning, and fostering trust, reflecting the essential elements required for living by design rather than default. Engaging in this transformative process with horses offers us a blueprint for personal growth and intentional living within our own lives. The efforts invested in understanding and connecting with horses yield dividends beyond trust-building; they foster intentional living and self-awareness. Aligning our energy and intentionality with these sentient beings mirrors the conscious approach required to lead our lives deliberately. This selfregulation and empathetic connection serve as a catalyst for personal growth, healing, and emotional resilience within

ourselves, echoing the depth of partnership we seek to create with our equine counterparts. Self-regulation, focused intention, and energy awareness enable us to establish deeper connections with our horses, nurturing trust and fostering stronger partnerships. These qualities mirror the essential components necessary for personal growth and intentional living. By cultivating these attributes in our interactions with horses, we learn to embody them in our lives, promoting self-growth, healing, and the formation of meaningful connections both within ourselves and with others. What horses offer us is no less than amazing, in my opinion. By building trust with them, we get to make the rest of our lives better, as well as enjoy a true partnership. Fun and ease (and horses!) can indeed make us better humans. Kimberly Cardeccia MA, LPC started Hidden Promise because of what she was witnessing in her counseling clients and riding students. Riding students started disclosing infor-mation in conversations much deeper, much quicker than her counseling clients. Interestingly, the riding students were also reporting changes in their lives outside of the riding arena as a result of their interaction with horses. In addition, Kim noticed how many riders were facing some type of apprehension, fear or even traumatic reaction around the horses. Dolly Hannon Clinic May 4 & 5, 2024 Equinox Farm, Highland, MI Dolly Hannon is a certified USDF Instructor through 4th level, who has been teaching students of all levels for over 35 years. She holds a riding instructor's teaching certificate from Colorado State University Instructor's program in Western and English. Her passion is correct classical training of the horse with clarity and kindness for both horse and rider. She works with all breeds of horses and teaches all levels of riders. Dolly's only requirement is that the student really wants to learn. She has competed extensively through Grand Prix winning many year-end awards from both USDF and RMDS. WDAMI is offering a Dolly Hannon Clinic on May 4 and 5, 2024 at Liz Snoblen's Equinox Farm, 855 N. Hickory Ridge Rd., Highland, Michigan 48357. Register early. Space is limited to 10 riders per day. The cost per 45-minute lesson is $150.00. Stall fee is an additional $25.00 per day. Auditors are welcome for a fee of $25.00 per day. Lunch will be served at no additional cost.
