The Importance of Listening
Kim Cardeccia | https://confidencethroughconnection.com/
Recently, my horse Anny reminded me about the importance of listening in building trust and partnership through compassionate leadership. It was a great reminder for me and I’ll share it here just in case it could be helpful for you as well.
Listening to our horses goes beyond just hearing; it involves keen observation, creating space, and practicing patience. While some may raise an eyebrow at the notion of listening to non-verbal creatures, the insights gained through this process are invaluable. The skills honed with our equine companions extend far beyond the pastures and arenas, enriching every aspect of our lives.
While tending to the horses during shedding season, Anny’s actions spoke volumes. As I approached her with the grooming brush, I waited for her invitation, a silent acknowledgment of consent that forms the basis of our relationship. Observing her subtle cues, I began the grooming process.
After a while, Anny wandered off to the water trough, allowing me to tend to her herd-mate, Honey.
What struck me was Anny’s return, standing patiently as I groomed Honey It was a simple yet profound moment that affirmed the importance of honoring our horses opinions. Despite her usual compliance, Anny’s quiet presence communicated her comfort and trust – a reminder that true partnership blossoms from mutual respect and understanding.
Navigating this journey of listening to our horses can be challenging, especially for those of us accustomed to a more authoritarian approach. Yet, it’s a journey worth embarking on, for it lays the foundation for meaningful connections and compassionate leadership.
In a world often dominated by voices clamoring for obedience, let us instead embrace the art of listening – not merely to agree, but to empathize, understand, and grow It’s a journey of awareness, of recognizing that every interaction, whether with our horses or fellow humans, holds the potential for deeper connection and mutual respect.
So I will leave you with just a reminder that we receive so much from honoring the voices around us and nurturing relationships built on trust, empathy, and understanding. Thanks to Anny for the inspiration!

Inside or Out: Exploring Standard of Care for Horse Housing
By Kentucky Equine Research Staff | https://ker.com/
In many countries, owners keep their horses outdoors for at least part of every day. In other parts of the world, however, horses are commonly maintained indoors, a management scenario associated with social isolation.
A survey of 76 owners on 60 farms in Canada was conducted to collect information on the living conditions of their horses and their attitudes toward those conditions.* The survey results represented 211 horses. In addition to exploring welfare based on physical health, mental well-being, and natural living state, owners were queried about the “standard of care,” defined as the quality, appropriateness, or “humaneness” of care provided to horses, highlighting the “human-animal interaction dimension of animal welfare.”
Inside or Out?
In Prince Edward Island, Canada, 79% of the horses were housed full-time outdoors in groups, and an additional 15% of horses were indoors part-time but outdoors in groups for the remaining part of the day
Over 92% of owners agreed that a horse’s physical health, mental well-being, and ability to live a natural life were better when housed outdoors rather than indoors. Yet, only 69% agree that the standard of care was better when housed outdoors. More specifically, owners who housed their horses indoors parttime indicated the standard of care provided to horses was better when housed indoors.
Owners also agreed that the physical health, mental well-being, and ability to live a natural life were better when housed in groups rather than individually. Owners who housed their horses individually believed the physical health of their horses was better than horses in groups.
Reasons for Housing Selection
When survey participants were asked why they chose indoor or outdoor housing, common answers were tradition (“always the way it’s been”), less work for the caretaker, and affordability. Owners also considered air quality, freedom to express natural behavior, and the need to move freely for health reasons such as stocking up, arthritis, or lameness.
In contrast, concerns with outdoor housing included conflict among horses maintained in groups, environmental challenges, shelter availability, and feeding groups of horses with obvious pecking orders or dominant horses. Owners were also concerned about insect problems and overconsumption of grass when housed outdoors.
Survey Results Analysis
“Owners agreed that the welfare of horses is better when maintained outdoors in groups; however, they were less likely to agree that the standard of care – the human-horse interaction –was improved when housed outdoors,” Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., a Kentucky Equine Research nutritionist, conveyed.
Reasons for this disparity between welfare and standard of care were not clearly identified, but the researchers suggested that standard of care is a more complex issue than welfare. The researchers also questioned whether owners who kept their horses outdoors felt they were sacrificing standard of care to enhance welfare.
“Owners may believe there are tradeoffs between their horse’s well-being and their ability to provide quality care for their horses,” concluded the research team.
Addressing Grazing Concerns
As mentioned by the surveyed owners, health concerns associated with outdoor housing included excessive grazing.
“Some horses have little self-control when there is an abundance of grass available and may overconsume, resulting in excessive caloric intake and weight gain. For individuals with a predisposition to metabolic disease, this can be detrimental to their health and ultimately lead to devastating diseases such as laminitis,” explained Crandell.
For horses at risk of metabolic disease, the advantages of outdoor housing would be at the expense of quality of care. This population may therefore benefit from more time indoors and less outdoors. One compromise would be the use of a grazing muzzle, which allows for more time outdoors but limits the amount of pasture the horse can consume.
When metabolic horses have limited pasture intake and rely on forage, likely soaked hay, balance the diet with a low-intake ration balancer or vitamin and mineral supplement.

Tips for Nightime Turnout
Written by Lisa Kiley | https://www.cashmans.com/
Now that summer is upon us and we are getting some warm days, you may want to consider switching your horse’s regular turnout schedule from daytime turnout to overnight. There are several reasons to consider making this change as part of your stable management program.
The first and most obvious is that horses generally prefer the cooler temperatures of the evening in the summer and prefer to lounge in their stalls during the day It can help prevent coat bleaching, sunburns and pesky bug bites. From a convenience standpoint, having horses out at night typically means tidier stalls that save on shavings and the horses get extra grazing time saving on forage costs.
Here are some tips to think about before changing your horse’s turnout schedule:
Secure Fencing – While horses should always have secure horse safe fencing when being turned out, it is even more important when horses are out overnight. Often when horses are on daytime turnout schedules, they are monitored. At night, an issue might go unnoticed until the morning, or if a horse were to get out, they would not be highly visible on roadways, which could lead to devastating consequences. Before turning out at night, ensure that the horse’s pasture is secure and check it frequently. Adding electrified rope fencing is a great way to add a layer of security to the fence. Utilizing pastures that are not road facing or investing in a double fence can add a layer of security as well. Use heavy gates and double-check gate latches before going in for the night. Keeping front gates closed at night is also a precaution to keep horses safe on the property.
Acclimating the Herd – Horses that go out together at night should be a well-established group that has been monitored during daytime hours. By taking the time to make sure the turnout groups are a good fit, it helps keep the horses safer and less likely to be injured. This also goes for horses in adjacent pastures if they can communicate over the fence. Taking some time to watch how horses are getting along is always important. Similarly, the horses need to acclimate to the new schedule. In the spring, horses should slowly increase time out on grass during the day so that when switching the horses aren’t going from just a few hours of turnout to eight plus hours of turnout all at one time. This will help prevent issues with laminitis and colic.
Shelter – Even though horses will typically be busy munching on grass when out in the pasture. Summer storms can often come out of nowhere and be quite severe. Giving a horse the option of shelter is always important. Pay close attention to the weather and if there are storms coming, it may be best to keep horses in on those evenings. Shelters can also come in handy when horses are turned out while it is still hot or when the summer mornings are extra toasty, providing a place for them to get out of the sun will help keep them from standing at the gate stomping flies and waiting to come back in. With adequate shelter, you may even consider leaving your horse out both day and night. Just remember to consistently monitor horses for injury or any changes if they keep a full-time outdoor schedule.
Accessorize – Turning out at night can help prevent horses from irritating biting flies that are out during the hottest parts of the day, but horses may still need some protection from pests. Horses are naturally designed to help keep pests away with their tails, so, allow their tail to hang free and do the job it is intended for Similarly, facial hair and hair in the ears have protective qualities when horses are out grazing, so if those areas must be trimmed, pay special attention to applying fly spray or consider using fly masks that include ear coverage. There are some great horse clothing products that help keep horses cool and fly free, just make sure that they are well fitted to your horse and that your horse is used to wearing those items before they are turned out all night. One of the best accessories for your horse is a grazing muzzle, especially in the early part of the season. Older horses or those with metabolic issues need to be closely monitored and you should work with your vet/nutritionist on coming up with a good plan to meet your horses specific needs which often includes utilizing a muzzle.
Pasture Maintenance – Pastures can be deceiving from afar. They can look like they are providing a good source of nutrition for the horses, but upon closer inspection, they can quickly become overwhelmed with weeds, boast bare patches where horses have designated a manure pile or suffer from overgrazing Mowing and harrowing pastures is important for their maintenance. Rotating horses and making sure not to not put too many horses out in one area is also important for maintaining growth all season. Depending on how much land there is for pasture, designating a sacrifice area with re-enforced footing can allow horses to still enjoy going out at night even if it is rainy or too dry. Monitoring horses for any changes in weight is a good indication of the health of the pasture. Horses may require additional forage sources when out in the field if the grass provided is not adequate.
There are many benefits to turning horses out at night and turnout in general is important for the health, both mentally and physically, for your horse. If you have any questions about creating a safe pastures and turnout areas for your horse, visit us at Cashmans Horse Equipment in Delaware, Ohio.
