NEW EQUINE ART EXHIBIT Equine Instincts, which explores the nostalgia and emotion between horses and their riders, opens Friday, Jan. 4, at Huron Valley Council for the Arts gallery, 205 W. Livingston Road in Highland Township, MI. The exhibit features "pencil sketches, acrylic paintings and three dimensional artwork" by artist Tammy Tappan. Exhibit hours for Equine Instincts are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 4p.m. Saturdays. The exhibit will be available through January 28. "Equine Instincts will explore the intimate relationship between horse and rider," said featured artist Tammy Tappan, who has been a graphic designer and commercial artist. "I am fascinated by the power and beauty of a horse... The subtle language used by a rider to communicate with this wonderful animal can be expressed in so many ways that, as an artist, I will never tire of the possibilities. "Despite its size, the horse repeatedly proves its willingness to comply with a rider's expectations... the undeniable trust between horse and rider is something to behold. Horse and rider have a connection that is beautiful both from afar and up close." Call 248-889-8660 or visit www.huronvalleyarts.org. WINNERS CHOSEN BY PFIZER Madison, N.J. - Dec. 07, 2012: Pfizer Animal Health is excited to announce that two horse owners are grand-prize winners in the Getaway Sweepstakes from

QUEST ® PLUS. This recent sweepstakes educates horse owners about fall parasite control and rewards them for the vital role they play in the health of their horses. Helen Koehler of Colgate, WI, will attend the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012. Pfizer Animal Health is delighted to provide Koehler and her guest round trip travel accommodations to Las Vegas to attend the premier Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association championship event, where top rodeo athletes compete for the coveted World Championship Gold Buckles. Marian Taylor of Houston, TX, will attend the inaugural HITS AIG Thermal $1 Million Grand Prix in California on Sunday, March 17, 2013. The staffs of HITS and Pfizer Animal Health will provide Taylor and her guest VIP access to this star-studded event, which offers qualified equestrians the largest prize money purse ever offered west of the Mississippi. These two lucky winners of the Getaway Sweepstakes were among entrants who watched a QUEST PLUS educational video on the sweepstakes website, then entered for a chance to win one of the getaway trips. “Pfizer Animal Health is thrilled with the tremendous participation in the Getaway Sweepstakes from QUEST PLUS. We wholly support those horse owners who are committed to staying up to date on horse health education in an effort to provide their horses the best care possible, and we're looking forward to hosting these two winners at the upcoming events,” said Kate Russo, marketing manager of Cattle and Equine Parasiticides, Pfizer Animal Health. By using QUEST PLUS, all horse owners can feel like winners with the only FDAapproved dewormer on the m a r ke t t h a t t r e a t s b o t h

GET TO KNOW THE GLBA The Great Lakes Buckskin Association (GLBA) is celebrating 35 years as a charter member of the International Buckskin Horse Association (IBHA) this year. Formed in 1978, GLBA was, and is meant to inspire the improvement in breeding, sale, exhibition, and publicity of the beautiful Buckskin, Dun, Red Dun, and Grulla horse. GLBA has a rich history as a family friendly, youth oriented group, in which promotion of family involvement and encouragement of horsemanship and sportsmanship are key. This shines through in the open show environment and the supportive interactions of our members. The Saturday Night Potluck dinners provide an enticing view into this welcoming group and everyone is always welcome to join in the usually boisterous affair. Each show offers you the opportunity to earn points on your registered IBHA or APHA horse (the shows are PAC approved), though any and all breeds are welcome to these OPEN shows. If you are looking for a relaxed, friendly show atmosphere, then GLBA shows are definitely up your alley. Our shows are competitive, though not with any kind of animosity. The Saturday nights are fun, and there is always plenty of good food to go around, as well as (22)

laughs. The people in charge are friendly and everyone welcomes any other person who wishes to join the GLBA members in the fun-filled weekend shows. Whether you wish to show one day, both, or just haul in for the speed competition, you are always welcome, and any 4Hers who wish to join us receive a warm greeting and good practice for Fair or just have a relaxed show weekend with their horse(s). The beautiful barns and large arenas of the Montcalm County fairgrounds provide an excellent place for our shows. Being located in Greenville, Michigan, makes them convenient for any local 4Hers and others in the mid-Michigan area. Please join us in the 2013 show season June 1-2, July 13-14, and August 31–September 1 for some exciting weekend shows. We would also like to invite you to join our organization as a member, to continue the rewarding tradition of family involvement and fun while enjoying the company of your equine companion. You can find a 2013 membership form in this issue of Saddle Up! Magazine! Please feel free to visit our website at www.glbahorse.com for pictures of our shows, the facilities, entry forms, and, coming soon, a 2013 showbill.

2013 SLEIGH FESTIVAL Three years ago, an idea was hatched to hold a sleigh festival that celebrated sleighs and all the magic associated with them. Members of local driving clubs lined up some interesting people knowledgeable about sleighs, winter garb, sleigh bells and chimes and put out some invitations. We thought we may WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs 2013 Sleigh Festival, Cont’d. have 30 others crazy enough to come out to our barn and sit in the chill for the afternoon, but were delighted to see over 70 people arrive in the middle of a snowstorm. The next year, realizing that the barn had reached capacity, we held our first official Maumee Bay Sleigh Festival at Vail Meadows Equestrian Center, near Maumee Bay State Park, in Oregon, OH. The 2-day festival with talks, presentations, banquet dinner, and drive made for a full weekend, with over 80 participants. Never mind that it was too warm to drive sleighs: we drove carriages instead! While the focus was on sleighs, we were flexible enough to handle whatever winter cast our way. We were fortunate to have Maumee Bay State Park less than a mile away, complete with lodging for sleigh enthusiasts, trails, and a banquet hall. Plans are now underway for our second Maumee Bay Sleigh Festival to be held again at Vail Meadows Equestrian Center on January 25-27, 2013. The first day is reserved for arrivals and a welcome potluck, while the remaining 2 days feature practical knowledge on restoration techniques for sleighs, as well as useful information on how to choose vehicles, what to look for in a harness, breeching and bitting your horse, and maintaining your sleigh through the year. We’ll also have some fun with “People’s Choice” awards, where attendees vote on each other’s sleighs, bells, robes, chimes, etc for best of class. This year’s theme is “Do It Yourself,” as evidenced with workshops on wood bending and working with wood, as well as on painting and striping your sleigh. Sleighs have a special magic, but their depressed prices in recent years have made restoration seem too costly. At this festival, you can learn tips to

do restoration yourself, enjoy your sleigh, and save money. Yo u ’ l l a l s o m e e t f e l l o w enthusiasts in a supportive environment. Highlights include a banquet presentation by Colonel Davis, President of the Carriage Association of America and past President of the Carriage Museum of America. Table topics on Sunday will feature speakers on sleighs and sleigh accessories, from bells, chimes, and blankets to warmers and furs. A swap meet for registered participants will be held Sunday. Horse-oriented events and topics are also planned. The event will be held snow or shine. Event registration is $20 before January 16, 2013, $30 afterwards. Banquet registration and stabling or trailer fees are additional. This had never been done before, presenting a combined group of mounted law officers… and it’s been an overwhelming success, and a very popular part of the annual Michigan Horse Expo. There have even been inquiries from other states as to how this was done! The group will leave from the MSU Pavilion, Friday evening, January 18th, arriving at Prince George’s Equestrian Center, Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on the morning of January 19th. This equestrian center is where all the horses participating in the Inaugural Parade will be housed. The unit will the rest of the 19th and the 20th, mostly at the Equestrian Center preparing for the parade. They will participate in the Inaugural Parade on January 21st, and return to the Pavilion on January 22nd. For those interested, the website for Prince George’s Eq Ctr is www.showplacearena.com. This is the same unit, with many of the same personnel, who participated in the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Parade. What a tremendous experience! With time so short to make all preparations, there is very little time for fund-raising, but any, and all, sponsorships for the group will be greatly appreciated. Cost for transporting and housing the unit will run approximately $1,500 per person and horse. This is indeed a great honor, as this unit is truly representative of both Michigan and the Michigan Horse Council. At this time approximately 10 different mounted units, including our two friends from the Toronto, Canada, mounted unit, will be participating, with a possible number of 30 horses! MI MOUNTED POLICE NEWS MI to be Represented in 2013 Presidential Inaugural Parade! Confirmation has just been received that the Michigan Multi-Jurisdictional Mounted Police unit has been selected to participate in the 2013 Inaugural Parade, January 21. The unit will represent the Michigan Horse Council, and will be made up of Mounted Division officers that have participated in the Color Presentation at the Michigan Horse Expo in the last few years. The group had its origins in the Expo: many years ago, Lorenzo Veal approached the Expo committee with a proposal to organize a group of mounted officers from many different

“L” PROGRAM GRADUATES The United States Dressage Federation is pleased to announce that 58 USDF members successfully completed the USDF “L” Education Program in 2012. The USDF “L” Education Program is designed to prepare candidates to enter the United States Equestrian Federation “r” Judges Training Program, to qualify individuals to judge schooling shows, and to give competitors, trainers, and instructors greater insight into the evaluative process of judging dressage. The program also serves to provide continuing education for licensed judges. The “L” Program is an excellent opportunity for all USDF members to learn from United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) licensed judges, in order to improve their scores and improve their ability to view other rides from a judge's perspective, whether or not they plan on becoming licensed judges themselves. USDF “L” Program faculty are all approved USEF Senior (“S”) dressage judges, who also have experience in teaching judgetraining programs. USDF congratulates the following new graduates of the USDF “L” Education Program in Region 2: *Sophie Bayer, KY; Karla Forrer, OH; Christina GemmelGnidovec, OH; *Jennifer Grant, OH; *Lydia Gray, IL; *Patricia Harper, OH; *Jennifer Hogan, TN; Catherine Jacob, OH; *Stephanie Likens, MI; *Laura Ovaitt, KY; *Jennifer Truett, OH; and Shari Wolke, MI. (*Denotes those that graduated with distinction from the "L" Program. Those who pass with distinction are eligible to apply to enter the USEF recorded ('r') judge program.) Horse Association & Club News

BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS In last month's column we promised to give everyone a report on our annual Christmas Party, and here it is: Several years ago we decided to combine our party with the one hosted by our friends and neighbors, the Pinckney Trail Riders. This was a significant improvement. It increased our attendance, allowed us to put on a more lavish affair, and doubled our fun. Many of us belong to both organizations, so it really amounted to a “family reunion.” Each party featured a pot luck dinner, games and group activities. This worked out well but after the 2011 party, we agreed that some changes might be in order and we started to consider alternatives. After discussions by our two boards of directors, we came up with an idea that everyone thought was worth a try. We decided to change the venue to a restaurant conveniently located for the members of our two organizations. We decided to drop the pot luck arrangement and have the restaurant offer a buffet, with the understanding that guests would pay a modest price for the meal and “not bring anything but their appetites.” We did, however, get the restaurant to agree to our board members bringing in a variety of desserts, which topped off the meal nicely. In the past, we held a gift exchanges and a number of games, but this year we offered just one game that allowed many of the participants to walk away with a variety of stocking stuffer-type prizes. This game features a Christmas story which always includes kids and horses, and delights everyone. We also had a 50/50 drawing and door prizes. The door prizes

were very nice, and included gift certificates to a western wear store, a saddlery, and several local restaurants. Finally, we topped off the evening with a DJ and dancing. This was the first year we've offered this type of entertainment, and it was well received. When we announced this part of the program, we told everyone to “wear their dancing boots” and many people did. How did this turn out? It was a huge success! Our parties in the past have drawn forty to fifty people. For this party, eighty BTRA and PTRA members and guests showed up. Many of them told us that they were eager to try something different, shell out a few dollars for a delicious restaurant meal instead of bringing in a dish, and enjoying music and dancing. We've already decided that we'll put on a similar affaire for our 2013 Christmas Party. We want to thank the BTRA and PTRA members who helped organize this party, and the businesses which stepped forward with their donations. In particular, we want to mention two businesses that were particularly generous: Howell Western Wear and Lakeside Saddlery in Whitmore Lake. We also want to thank DJ Roger Burgdolf, who donated his services. Roger is a professional DJ and is available for parties, wedding receptions, and the like. Finally, we want to give special thanks to our hosts, RJ's Grill in Hamburg. They were very cooperative, gave us exclusive use of their establishment, and provided us with a delicious buffet dinner at a reasonable price. We would recommend RJ's as a great place to dine if you're in the Hamburg area. In conclusion, 2012 has been a good year for us, and we're looking forward to an even better 2013! EQUINE LADIES Equine Ladies Club is a great resource for meeting new horse people, finding someone to ride with and to learn about equine related subjects. We are open to any woman 18 years old and over. You do not have to own a horse to belong, we have a number of non-horse owning/riding members who belong because our group offers a very special bond and camaraderie for many and we have lots of fun. Equine Ladies was started on November 16, 1987, with six members who wanted something special for themselves and horses without kids or husbands, and we are still going strong 25 years later. December 2012 was our Christmas potluck and very fun and exciting gift exchange. The weather cooperated with no snow and temperatures in the 40's. We all remember leaving the party in other years to find 6" of snow on our cars, scraping off a thick layer of ice, or driving home white knuckled on I-94 with flashers going. Everyone agreed that this was one of our best parties ever. Our January 2013 pizza party meeting was held at the beautiful Concord Ridge Equestrian Center in St. Joseph. We planned our schedule for the year, and this schedule will be published next month. With the start of the new year, many of us are already looking forward to our horse-oriented events. The first one up is the Michiana Equine Expo February 15 & 16 at the Michiana Event Center (The MEC), in Howe, Indiana, just south of Sturgis. Then we can hardly wait for the Michigan Horse Expo and the Kalamazoo Swap meet, both in March. Trail riding is always an option, weather permitting. (26)

If you would like further information about our Equine Ladies Club, please contact president, Sally Forraht at 269473-1730 or Vice-President, Debbie Brown at 269-655-7289. Submitted by Judy Poluhanycz, Secretary

MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING By the time this goes to print I am assuming that winter will have finally arrived. What a great fall to be riding! Too bad for me I completely cleaned my trailer and put it away on what I thought was the “last nice day” of the fall. Reading everyone's posts about hitting the trails and how excited they all were to get back in the woods after hunting season was over was a little bit frustrating. Unfortunately, the great weather did not come with four more hours of day light. Unable to get home in time to ride during the week, I worked really hard to at least ride in the arena on the weekends. For many years I have looked forward to the down time of winter, when we are happy to go out and care for our friends while the desire to ride hibernates until early spring. This year I find myself wanting to frequent an indoor arena and get my six year old mare ready for more active riding next year. This is a delusion for me because of the nightly exhaustion inflicted from teaching 23 active second graders every day! I do wonder what would have happened if my parents had never bought me that first pony. A good friend of mine got teary-

eyed when he found out I was never the owner of a Big Wheel. This, he thought, was tragic and I don't believe he truly understood when I said, “who needs a Big Wheel when you have a pony?” We all have different stories about when horses began to shape our lives but we all share the same bond with our fourlegged friends. You might not be able to explain it and none of us what to change it, but it is there just the same. Whether you hibernate from riding in the winter or are inspired enough to ride in the cold, just remember to appreciate the opportunity to live a life shaped by horses. I hope to see everyone at the expos and indoor winter events that keep us sane or drive our insanity, (that would be my husband's opinion). Hang in there for another long winter, it will motivate us to make good use of better weather when it finally arrives! WEST MI APPALOOSA REG. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season. So far this winter has been pretty mild. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the rest of the season holds. Plans are well under way for the 2013 shows. We will have our June 1-2 show back at the Ingham County Fairgrounds in Mason, with three judges counting as four sets of points. The other show will be July 1314 at the Centreville Fairgrounds with two judges. The Centreville show will also have WMAR points doubled. We're looking forward to showing at this newly updated facility. Please let your friends showing other breeds know that both of our shows will be offering All Breed Open classes. Don't forget that stalls for both shows must be pre-paid with no refunds. I am still looking for show high point award ideas. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. • PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING™ • Building a Partnership with Your Horse

find any cracks in a leather latigo, replace it immediately. A nylon latigo will last longer than leather, but be careful not to over tighten it when cinching up.

ON-TRAIL TRAINING, Part I By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 It's true that I love to train on the trail. Whether you are a novice trail rider or a seasoned one, you and your horse will benefit from useful trail-training tips to increase your on-trail control and safety. In this article, we will focus on our tack check before riding. I prefer a dressage saddle for light training on the trail; but, if I plan to do a lot of cantering, I select a hunt seat saddle because it helps a rider achieve a twopoint position and stay balanced over the horse's center of gravity. This increases your stamina at the canter and helps the horse stay balanced as well. When I pleasure trail ride, especially in hilly terrain, I like a Western saddle because it has a larger seat and is more comfortable. Also, you can use the saddle horn to help you keep your balance when you are going up or down hills in steep terrain. Saddle Fit/Placement Make sure the saddle you select for trail training or pleasure trail riding fits your horse. If the tree is too narrow, the saddle can slip back and put painful pressure on the horse's lower back and loins. Poor saddle fit can lead to a host of physical problems, including sore withers and back and loin muscles, muscle atrophy, lack of extension, uneven hoof wear, and lameness. When in doubt, consult an expert. Many riders unknowingly place the saddle too far forward on the horse. When you do this, your horse's shoulder blade actually hits the saddle tree as he strides o u t . To a v o i d p a i n , h e compromises his stride. This unnatural, altered stride causes him to land harder than usual, putting more pressure on his feet, joints, and muscles. Also, the under-panels of a saddle that is too far forward do not come in contact with the

Saddle Pads A wool pad is ideal because it conforms to your horse's back, wicks away sweat, and is longwearing. Look for a one-inch thick wool pad. Avoid a synthetic fleece pad because it lacks the moisture-wicking of wool. A single Navajo-type blanket is not usually thick enough for the horse's comfort so add another pad or blanket under it. However, do not make the mistake of thinking “the thicker the better” because too many pads will cause a barrel effect and the saddle will shift. This, in turn, can sore the horse's back. Also, you cannot improve saddle fit by adding pads. Square cotton blankets and half-pads are popular with English riders. Be sure your pad is large enough for your saddle. There

horse's back but instead bridge it. That means that it touches only his withers and lower back, and this creates undue pressure on those areas, rather than uniformly distributing the rider's weight. Cinch/Girth I suggest using a neoprene or leather cinch or girth because it is easy to clean and disinfect. This is particularly important if you use your tack on more than one horse. However, be careful with neoprene, because you can get one too tight. I use a leather girth on long trail rides, particularly when it is hot because it breathes, unlike neoprene. If you ride with a back cinch or girth, you should not be able to see a noticeable gap of daylight between the cinch/girth and the horse's belly. A loose back cinch is asking for an accident to happen, especially on the trail where a branch can get caught in it, or, worse, the horse can hang up a back foot in it and you both could get injured. Tighten the cinch or girth at least twice while tacking up. After the first time, leave the stirrup hooked on the saddle horn (if riding Western) or the iron run up the leather (if riding English). This will remind you to tighten it again once more before mounting.

should be at lease one inch of pad showing around all the edges of the saddle. Pad Cleaning Clean your saddle pad regularly because hair and dirt buildup can irritate your horse's back. Also, use a clean pad if you switch horses. Shared equipment can spread skin problems from one horse to another. Whenever you tack up, pull the front of your pad or blanket up to the top of the cantle. This creates a “tunnel,” allowing air to enter and reach the horse's back, making him cooler and more comfortable during the ride. Also, remove any mane hairs trapped under the pad because such hair can irritate his back.

I covered many of my trailtraining lessons in my book, Training Outside the Box. For this book, as well as many other helpful training materials, please visit www.lynnpalm.com or call us at 800-503-2824.

Safety Check Although saddle style on the trail is your personal preference, safety is not optional. Routine maintenance and observation of your tack can mean the difference between a pleasur-able ride and one that ends badly due to tack failure. Before every ride, turn your saddle upside down and look it over. Pay close attention to places where hardware connects with leather, looking for cracks or signs of wear. Inspect the billets and buckles on an English saddle and the latigo on a Western one. If you

Topics will include exercises to prepare for the show ring, improving your horse’s pace, effective horse and rider communication, and conditioning the show horse. Audience questions are encouraged. ©2013 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • JANUARY 2013
