SADDLE UP! MAGAZINE NEWS BRIEFS MRCHA 2010-11 INFO Since its creation in September 2009, the Michigan Reined Cow Horse Association (MRCHA) is over 100 members strong and growing with optimism. The 2010 show season was a huge success with 12 Nat’l Reined Cow Horse sanctioned events! Competitors ranged in age from the youngest at six to the oldest at a reported 77 years of age. Pa y- o u ts fo r th e ye a r exceeded $27,000. A Jim Taylor custom saddle will be awarded to our Open All Around High Pt. competitor at our Year End Awards Banquet. Other awards include a Cow Horse Bridle, Yucca Flats saddle pads and much more. MRCHA's cattle supplier, Isaac Stroud of McBain, Michigan, brought cattle that were challenging, testing the skill of both horse and rider. Many of the participants qualified for the National Reined Cow Horse World show in San Angelo, Texas, being held the end of January. Many thanks go out to JDJ Ranch, Isaac Stroud, Wayne Kiel, Jennifer Wahr, Lyle Frederickson, Trevor Walton, Bob Walton, Jim Redmond and Gene Munger for volunteering their time and expertise throughout the 2010 show season! Planning for the 2011 show season is well underway. MRCHA will be hosting a series of Open Shows with a new twist to attract performance horse enthusiasts. Reining classes will be added to the normal class schedule. Each Saturday evening a Reined Cow Horse demo will be held with a “Try It If You Like It” class immediately following. Cattle will be available to accommodate anyone wishing to give it a whirl.
All of the MRCHA Open Shows will have awards for weekend high points. MRCHA membership is required. Stay tuned for show bills and complete details on our website and at surrounding expos and tack swaps. The mission of MRCHA is to preserve the heritage and tradition of the western reined stock horse. The goal is to promote affordable, quality, family events in Northern Michigan. The events are structured to allow all riders, all ages and levels of experience, to participate in a fun and supportive environment. Kicking off the 2011 season will be the first open show March 26 & 27, 2011. This will be a warm and fuzzy show; show attire will not be required. Trevor Walton will be the judge and conduct the Reined Cow Horse demo Saturday evening. Additional dates for Open Shows are as follows: April 30 & May 1 and June 4 & 5, 2011. A full slate of National Reined Cow Horse shows are scheduled as follows: April 23 & 24, May 28 & 29, September 3 & 4 and November 12 & 13, 2011. An October show is pending. All shows are approved by the National Reined Cow Horse Association, so riders chasing national points have the chance to participate in shows through the fall months before the official season ends November 15th. Events at the show range from the very beginning and youth classes to the NRCHA highly competitive classes for the experienced competitors with a minimum of $1000 Added Money at each show. Most classes offer a Jackpot payout, and the Green I and Green II classes will have

Added Money available to encourage new competitors to the sport. Please join the MRCHA, “where horse meets cow”, and experience the excitement of the sport whether as a spectator or competitor! A raffle colt was donated to MRCHA by Jim and Jennifer Redmond. He is Peptoboonsmal/Docs Hickory bred. Raffle tickets are $25 and the raffle drawing will be held at the May show. Contact Shelly Fuller at 231633-5502 for more details. ALBION BENEFIT The indoor winter show jumping horse show series held annually at the Albion College Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center serves as a way for equestrians from across the region to continue to train and show their horses during the snowy winter months. The February 5 and 6, 2011 show, however, will also be a benefit for junior rider Sydney Collier. Collier, 13, of Ann Arbor, is a frequent face at the Albion College shows with her Pinto gelding, Rebel Chip. Collier was diagnosed with WyburnMason syndrome at the age of seven, a disorder that causes malformations similar to vascular tumors in her brain and limits her vision and ability to use her left side. As such, Collier is classified as a para-equestrian, with the “para” referring to parallel, as in “along the same lines” as traditional equestrian sport. Indeed, in the show ring, Collier gives ablebodied equestrians a run for their money. For someone as dedicated to her sport as Collier, however, local shows are just the beginning. She hopes one day soon to compete internationally. The first step toward this goal will be a trip (22)
to California, March 11-13, 2011, to compete in the Dressage Affaire, an international para-equestrian qualifier. While there, Collier will also have an opportunity to train with former Olympic dressage team member Debbie McDonald. In order to travel west for the event, Collier is in need of funds. A percentage of the proceeds from the Albion College show will be donated and competitors will also have the opportunity to contribute when they submit their entries. Other donations may be sent to Collier in care of either the Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center (albion.edu/heldcenter) or the United States Para Equestrian Association (http://www.uspea.org). For additional info contact: Randi Heathman, Albion College, (517) 629-0835, RHeathman@albion.edu. The Foundation Quarter Horse Registry (FQHR) has been acquired by Bill and Vicki Austin of Vicksburg, Michigan. The FQHR will be moving the business from S t e r l i n g , C o l o r a d o, t o Vi c k s b u r g , M i c h i g a n , January 1, 2011. The FQHR was formed in 1994 by a group of people who firmly believed in the American Quarter Horse. The purpose of the Foundation Quarter Horse Registry is to preserve, protect and perpetuate the working cow horse bloodlines of the Foundation Quar ter Horse by the individuals that the FQHR deems as Foundation bred. The Foundation Quarter Horse Registry recognizes those horses listed in the first
five studbooks (first 27,000 horses registered) as Foundation bred. The FQHR has horses registered in every state and six countries. Keeping and preserving bloodlines is, and will continue to be, our goal; not to overload the registry and members with regulations and requirements. Member service will be a top priority from quick response to phone calls and emails, regularly published newsletters and possibly online performance records. Plans for the future include bigger and better shows, sales focused on Foundation bred working horses, and products. Support and direction will be available to the state affiliates if they desire help in improving their specific FQHR activities and events. We are based on family values and are known for being very welcoming to new people. We have the full range of members from firsttime exhibitors to seasoned veterans. Green, Novice and Amateur riders have a wealth of support at their fingertips from the more experienced exhibitors. We encourage working type tack so special tack and clothing are not required. We expect our horses to be versatile and not specialized. They are allowed to move more naturally than many other groups. FQHR shows offer classes in six categories: show, cow horse, ranch horse, speed, team timed events and conformation which is encouraged to be held after performance classes so it can be judged more on form to function. An exhibitor can ride in a variety of classes for the two days of the show and not risk being bored waiting for a class. The Austins have been

actively involved with the FQHR since its inception and are very excited about having the opportunity to move the Foundation Quarter Horse Registry forward. They are looking for ward to an exciting time revitalizing the FQHR. For more information contact: Bill or Vicki at 269649-1106, visit the website www.fqhrregistry.com, or mail FQHR, Box 165, Vicksburg, Mi 49097. HOLIDAY PARADES Harmony Acres ended their 2010 parade season by riding in three Holiday Winter Parades. All of which were televised live on major Detroit and Toledo TV networks. This year was Harmony Acres' 8th appearance in the 84th annual America's Thanksgiving Day Parade which marched down Woodward Avenue from Mack to Congress in Detroit on November 25th. The Arabian horses and their riders were decked out in their finest Christmas costumes as they rode down the 1.5 mile parade route.
The Harmony Acres Arabian Parade Horses, all siblings, wore matching red saddle blankets enhanced by green sequin stars and trim. Red and silver tinsel topped by silk poinsettia flowers flowed with their manes and a large poinsettia rested atop their tails. Garlands of silk poinsettia flowers circled their necks. Red sports medicine boot covers with fringe and crystal decorations circled their legs as crystal snowflakes sparkled from shiny black and white hooves. All horses wore sterling bridles, breast collars, and saddles with Tapadero stirrups. The group has ridden in over 400 of the country's largest parades including all of Detroit's major parades, the Toledo Holiday Parade, Michigan Parades into the 21st Century Parade, Oldsmobile's 100th Anniversary Parade, and this year's 50th Anniversary of Milwaukee's Great Circus Parade. Riders in Detroit included Nancy Harm of Salem Township who is breeder and trainer of the horses. She was dressed in white leather and crystal western costume to match her horse Tarifa. Kate Stewart of South Lyon rode Harmony Diamond and was dressed in a red leather and crystal western costume. Jody Trottier of Redford rode Harmony Sadefa and was also dressed in red. Local girls that carried Harmony Acres Banner included: Rebecca and Claire Rimatzki, and Briana Parkyn, all of Salem Township and Alannah Hendricks of Farmington. They were dressed in red leather fringe western jackets and red cowgirl hats topped by Santa hats. Dave Fisher of Ann Arbor and Alexis Hendricks

of Farmington served as parade photographers. Mariah Parkyn and Elizabeth Richards of Salem of Salem and Carolyn Collins of Farmington and were escorts also dressed in red leather fringe jackets and hats. Harmony Acres was early in the line up and stepped off as number six in this year's event. The group arrived on site to light rain that thankfully stopped just before the parade's start. Despite the challenging weather, there were huge crowds throughout the length of the parade route. Harmony Acres was included in the first hour's syndicated broadcast that reached tens of millions of viewers nationwide. The group followed the “Detroit Rocks” float and was in front of the “GM” Float. Because of their early position in the parade lineup, this year’s parade was very fast, without stopping until the TV Zone where everyone waited for the onair TV coverage to start at 10am. The group was finished and home with the horses enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner of warm beat pulp and carrots before 11:30am! Other equine units included The Budweiser 8 horse Clydesdale Hitch from Meredith, NH; Wells Fargo Stage Coach Hitch; Wayne County Mounted Police; and the Michigan Black Horsemen Association. The theme of this year's America's Thanksgiving Day Parade was “Celebrate the Spirit” celebrating the Parade Company bringing a spark of magic and people together to enjoy one of Detroit's largest events where families can be enter tained, share a tradition, and create a memory. All participants were given a green ID (24)
bracelet stamped with the parade theme and a parade pin to wear during the event. This year's parade featured 13 bands, 9 Giant Balloons, 125 world famous oversized papier-mache heads designed and made in Viareggio, Italy, 25 floats, 1,000+ clowns who handed out 300,000 bead necklaces to the enthusiastic crowd, 5 equine units, singers, dancers, and specialty units. Over 5,000 marching volunteers helped marching along the parade route. Among the notable celebrities participating were: Co Grand Marshals Dick Putin, renowned radio talk show personality Antony Earley Jr., Miss Michigan 2010, TV Actresses Deidre Hall, Gretchen Rossi and Jana Kramer, rapper BIZ Markie, 2010 Olympics medalists ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White. Other Olympic medalists included Peer Vander Kay, Seth Westcott, Thomas Finchum, and Ricky Bernes. Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets this year to celebrate one of the country's best and most celebrated parades. It was one of the largest crowd turnouts in years. Harmony Acres also rode in Royal Oak's Holiday Magic Parade televised on Fox 2, a n d To l e d o ' s H o l i d a y Parade. For info, contact Nancy M. One important note for banquet is that no awards will be given out prior to the banquet and award presentation. If you can’t make it, please make arrangements to have someone else pick up your awards at that time. Our next meeting will be January 8th, 2011 at the MSU Pavilion at 3:00 p.m. As always, members are always welcome and encouraged to attend. ‘til next month… Sharon Clark WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

UNDER THE MICHIGAN EQUINE LIABILITY ACT, AN EQUINE PROFESSIONAL IS NOT LIABLE FOR AN INJURY TO OR THE DEATH OF A PARTICIPANT IN AN EQUINE ACTIVITY RESULTING FROM THE INHERENT RISK OF THE EQUINE ACTIVITY. I apply to participate in or observe equine events provided and sponsored by Ranch Horse Association of Michigan (RHAM). By signing this RELEASE OF LIABILITY I understand that my involvement in a Ranch Horse Event will expose me to above normal risks due to the unpredictable behavior of horses and their reactions to surroundings of unfamiliar objects, sounds and cattle. Examples of these risks include: collisions, kicking, biting, rearing, bucking, striking, rolling, bolting and trampling. I understand that horses have a tendency to behave in ways that may result in injury, harm or death to a person on or around it. I agree that I assume and acknowledge these and other dangers that are inherent in horse related activities. I agree that I am responsible for my own safety. I agree that I have my own medical coverage. I agree that the RHAM, their members, employees, and agents will not be liable if I suffer personal injury or death. I agree not to bring any claims, demands or lawsuits against RHAM, their members, employees or agents. I agree that if RHAM, their members, agents or employees are sued by anyone else because of claimed conduct by myself, I will indemnify and hold them harmless from all damages and costs, including reasonable actual attorney fees. I agree that by signing this release it becomes binding on me, my heirs and assigns, and thus I am allowed to participate in RHAM activities or ride on property rented or in use for events. I agree that, THIS RELEASE CONSTITUTES A WAVIER OF LIABILITY BEYOND THE PROVISIONS OF THE MICHIGAN EQUINE ACTIVITY LIABILITY ACT 1994 P.A. 351. I agree that Michigan law governs the enforceability of this release. I acknowledge that I have read this waiver and liability release and I fully understand it, I am eighteen years of age or older, and that I am signing this release on my own behalf (or on the behalf of my minor children), our heirs, representatives and assigns. I understand that I am responsible for my own financial loss in relation to any theft or damage to my tack, equipment, vehicles, trailers, and horses while on the premises where an Equine event is held. Upon purchase of a RHAM Membership, member agrees to abide by the Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of ARHA and RHAM. A RHAM membership is not required to participate in a RHAM Event as long as the participant provides proof of a current ARHA membership, but a RHAM membership must be purchased to be eligible for year-end points to accumulate and showing 3 of 4 or 4 of 5 RHAM circuit shows per season to be eligible for a year end award. I (We) agree to abide by the rules of the American Ranch Horse Assoc. and Ranch Horse Assoc. of Michigan and will work to promote the association.

Now I'd like to offer some suggestions on how to select a riding instructor to help you improve the skills that you bring to your partnership. Finding the “Right” Instructor Previously, I have stressed the importance of creating goals for both horse and rider. Your riding goals should be based on an honest evaluation of your personality, expectations, and riding skills. Once you have decided on your goals, you will have a blueprint that can help you in your selection of the “right” instructor to help you achieve them. Just as in horse training, the profession of riding instruction does not require a license or official degree. There are many riding instructors out there with a wide range of teaching abilities, knowledge, and experience. It is up to you, the rider, to evaluate the person you are considering to serve as your instructor. Although you need a good working relationship with your horse trainer, the interaction between you and the trainer is not as important as it is with a riding instructor. This means that you need to do an honest evaluation of your personality and how it mixes with the instructor's personality. This is important if learning is to take place. Just as a good classroom teacher will keep you motivated, a riding instructor with good teaching skills and a personality that works with
yours will motivate you to learn. The opposite is also true! Teaching is the Key One place to start with your search for a riding instructor is to seek out a person who has credentials from a professionally acknowledged riding instructor certification program. The United States Dressage Federation is one organization that has instructor certification programs based on a professionally accepted curriculum that develops both riding and teaching skills. Professional horsemen's associations or breed associations also can help you find certified riding instructors practicing near you. Be sure to ask the person you are considering for your instructor if he/she has completed any type of instructor certification program. Often instructors who have achieved these c re d e n t i a l s h a v e t h e m proudly displayed on their office wall! In the United States, show ring success has been the traditional way of gauging a person's credentials as a horseman. While show ring wins do not indicate a person's ability to teach, they can provide another way to evaluate an instructor's abilities and professionalism. So, do consider a potential instructor's riding experience. Ask the instructor to provide you with a list of his/her riding achievements. Evaluate the quality and type of their accomplishments. Have they demonstrated proficiency in your area of interest? Is their level of achievement

the ground" is your best tool for improving your riding skills and gaining knowledge. Remember, an instructor can also destroy a rider with the incorrect information and by teaching the use of forceful techniques. Use your common sense at all times when selecting and working with an instructor. Instructional videos and DVDs are good tools in addition to your lessons with your personal instructor. I have several series that are excellent instructional aids. In my Hunt Seat Equitation series, I teach and critique riders for the show ring. I teach and coach riders in my Exercises for Equestrians series as well. The Palm Partnership Training Course and the Palm Partnership Training Agility Course are also excellent. On Our Cover...
Rykin is a 6 year old, 17.1hh black and white pinto Swedish Warmblood x Saddlebred. I know, odd combination but, he is beautiful! aka “Master of Disaster”... Rykin is a character to say the least. Anything in his path that is out-of-the-ordinary will end up in his mouth or getting thrown into the air. Rykin resides on our 11 acre farm in Ortonville, Michigan with his “brothers” Rudy and Nacho (whom I adopted from Horses' Haven in Howell). I bought Rykin at the age of 3 with the intention of training and showing him in whatever discipline he excelled in. I spent 6 months teaching him all the Clinton Anderson “Gaining Respect on the Ground” exercises and had just started to break him to ride when I became pregnant with my first child. So needless to say, his training hasn’t been very consistent since then (now on my 2nd baby!). I’m hoping next summer is our big year for advancing his riding skills. He’s a very smart, confident, level-headed horse, so I don't want him just being a big pasture pony! I’d love to show him off in the show ring someday but, if that doesn’t happen, then he’ll just be the prettiest horse on the trails! Lisa Heine, Ortonville, MI
