USDF & HEADGEAR Lexington, KY - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) released an official statement regarding protective headgear use following the Spring USDF Executive Board meeting held at their headquarters in the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. The statement, “USDF strongly recommends all riders wear protective headgear when mounted”, is in line with USDF's current policy to require all photos of mounted riders in the USDF Connection magazine include protective headgear. USDF is also requiring the statement on all videos it produces and any videos or educational materials for which it offers accreditation for its University program. 2010 MSU AG EXPO EAST LANSING, Mich. Ag Expo, Michigan's largest outdoor farm show, returns to the Michigan State University (MSU) campus July 20–22 for the 31st time, bringing a variety of educational and commercial activities and exhibits to the state's agricultural community as well as to homeowners, families and anyone who wants to know more about the state's secondlargest industry. The second weekend was almost as big with a bit cooler temps and a little mist and fog; the rains missed us other than Friday when it watered the ring very nicely. The show arena is absolutely huge and I heard the game people thought the footing was good except for a few stones. INTRODUCING THE MICHIGAN REINED COW HORSE ASSOC. Article by Shelly Fuller • Photo by Bob Clogg The Michigan Reined Cow Horse Association (MRCHA) was created over a cup of coffee at the local coffee shop in Cadillac, Michigan, in September 2009. Shelly Fuller, founder and president, was planning for the 2010 show season when she decided to bring this sport to nor thern Michigan. An indoor facility was critical so the shows could run no matter the unexpected weather changes in this region. Shelly reached out to JDJ Ranch in Evart, Michigan, took the tour with some friends and fellow riders, and discussed the needs of reined cow horse shows. Jim McLachlan, owner of JDJ Ranch, was eager to bring more business to the ranch and to the town of Evart, so an agreement was reached to lease the facility for the shows. The next challenge was locating and making arrangements to bring in the cows needed for the sport. Isaac Stroud of McBain, Michigan, is a local farmer and entrepreneur who located and secured a supply of quality cattle for the shows. Isaac’s cattle handling experience, calm demeanor and professionalism help make t h e s h o w s f l o w m o re smoothly. Planning for the 2010 show season began with a score of friends and experts in the cow horse sport to prepare for the first event a mere six m o n t h s l a t e r. T h e Association was formed and received National Reined Cow Horse affiliation recognition. A staff was brought together with exceptional organizational

talent and expertise in running the show office, as well as valuable volunteers to support and assist during the r u n n i n g o f t h e s h o w. Tremendous thanks goes out to Bob & Susie Walton, Trevor Walton, Wayne Kiel, Jennifer Wahr, Lindsay Maybee, Gene Munger, Lyle Frederickson, and Kathy Fountain for their unending support, encouragement, and expertise.

Bob Walton, Gene Munger, and Trevor Walton, experts in the competitive sport, donated their time and teaching for the one-day clinic; attendees came from all around the region to try out the sport or gain more knowledge. Two more summer clinics will be held Saturday, July 10th and Saturday, August 14th at the JDJ Ranch in Evart, MI, from 10:30am to 4pm. The cost for each participant will be $80, or $10 to audit (no horse) with lunch included.

The mission of the Michigan Reined Cow Horse Association is to preserve the heritage and tradition of the western reined stock horse. The goal is to promote affordable, quality, family events in northern Michigan. The events are structured to allow all riders, all ages and levels of experience, to participate in a fun and supportive environment. Kicking off the 2010 season was a clinic March 20th to familiarize the interested riders in northern Michigan with the required equipment,

All shows for the 2010 season are approved by the National Reined Cow Horse Association, so riders chasing national points have the chance to participate in shows through the fall months before the official season ends November 15th. Events at the show range from very beginner and youth classes to the highly competitive NRCHA classes for the experienced competitor. There will be Added Money and Jackpot classes at (30)

The first show in April 2010 was well attended with over 100 entries ranging in age from the youngest at 12 to the oldest at a reported 77 years. The family atmosphere, good healthy competition, and indoor environment makes these events fun to attend for every age. There is no charge for spectators and the shows are full of excitement with the challenges between horse, rider and cow! Payout to the competitors at the April shows was in excess of $3000. Entries for the May show were up 30% and payouts totaled nearly $5000! A Jim Taylor trophy saddle, sponsored in part by Heritage Custom Saddlery, will be awarded to the high point Open & Non Pro All Around competitor. MRCHA 2-day shows are always Saturday and Sunday, and the schedule for Fall 2010 is September 4-5, October 9-10, October 2324, and November 13-14. Entry fees for the September 4th Bridle Spectacular will be due no later than Monday, August 16th. Payouts for the Bridle Spectacular will be an additional $1100 to the standard $1000 Added Money! I find that people have expectations of what they want in a horse and what they expect it to achieve, but they are not re a l i s t i c i n e v a l u a t i n g themselves and their role in making their dream happen. They expect that the new horse will “fill in” what they should be bringing to the partnership. Finally, you need to honestly evaluate your riding skills. This is closely tied to evaluating your goals because they cannot be achieved without some level of skill. Test your ability through riding practice and, more desirably, through riding lessons. Do you have the knowledge and experience to achieve your goals? If you do not, no equine partner is going to be able to supply them for you! You will need to achieve them first and be willing to

START WITH THE RIDER By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 I wrote this series on “Building a Partnership with Your Horse” in response to questions I am asked frequently at clinics and exhibitions, as well as in personal e-mails. It may be a review for those of you who have been “into” horses for a long time. However, if you have found that you purchased the wrong horse for yourself over and over again, this will be helpful to you even if you are an experienced horse owner. It is essential to understand both yourself and your horse in order to create a successful partnership. No matter what riding discipline you are interested in, the bond between horse and rider is built on understanding and respect. Like choosing a dance partner, choosing the right equine partner can make the difference between fulfilling your riding dreams and dealing with constant frustration. My philosophy is that we should improve the rider to improve the horse and not the other way around. To find the right equine partner, we must first focus on the rider. I recommend that riders who are seeking a new equine partner first do a personal evaluation. It can be a difficult process to be totally honest about your personality, ability, and goals. By asking an unbiased equine professional or a friend to help, you can get important feedback. Honest evaluation at this step will save you frustration later and help you avoid choosing an unsuit-

able, or even an unsafe, equine partner. One of the most important, and difficult, characteristics the rider must evaluate is her personality. Do you have a bold, aggressive personality? Or, are you more timid and perhaps shy? Have you had a bad riding experience that left you with some fears or doubts? There are no wrong or right personality styles when it comes to riding. It is important to recognize your style because it will help you find a horse with a personality that complements your own. Evaluate your lifestyle. How much time will you have to spend with a horse and why are you entering into this partnership? Different horses and different riding disciplines vary in the amount of time they require. Most people have a career, family, and social obligations. How much time in your busy schedule will you have to spend with an equine partner? Ask yourself why you want a horse. Are you looking for stress release, companionship, exercise, or because it is “your thing”? All of these are fine reasons to want an equine partner, but how many of your other obligations are you willing to forfeit in order to fit in the time necessary to become a team? Yo u a l s o n e e d t o realistically evaluate your goals for the partnership. While it is important for riders to have a dream of what they can achieve with their horse, they must be realistic given

commit the time and effort to do so. If you are not coming up with solid answers in this evaluation, seek advice from an unbiased equine professional (preferably one that you are already working with and are satisfied with, and not a person who is only interested in selling you a horse). Remember, we all have to keep evaluating our horse's suitability. There are two questions to constantly ask yourself: 1) Are you safe with your horse? 2) Are you having fun? If the answers to these two questions are not both “yes,” then you need to begin finding out why. To do this you need to learn more about your horse and about yourself as a partner to him. plays a role in how severely the horse is affected. “If you can treat the horse before the toxin has time to make it up into the spinal cord, the horse is likely to do better than if a wound isn't recognized until most of the toxins have already made it to the spinal cord and are bound to those cells...if there is a treatment delay, the horse is less likely to recover,” says Johnson. The best thing to do, obviously, is to prevent tetanus with vaccination. But if somehow that horse gets missed, or you get a new horse with unknown vaccination history and suddenly the horse starts showing clinical signs or sustains a deep wound, the horse should be treated with antitoxin. “This will bind the toxins before they get to the spinal cord. If they've already made it up to the spinal cord, the antitoxin can't stop the disease at that point. But it can neutralize any toxins that have not yet made it to the spinal cord,” she says. Thus prompt administration of antitoxin might make the disease less severe. “We also recommend treating the horse with antibiotics to kill any clostridial bacteria that are still present. Usually penicillin is the recommended anti-biotic for this purpose. You also want to do standard wound care, and decontaminate the wound as much as possible. If it's a puncture wound where there is a pocket of infection creating an environment without oxygen (ideal habitat for these bacteria) you need to open it up, clean it out and allow oxygen to get to that area,” she says. Most of the rest of the t re a t m e n t i s i n t e n s i v e supportive care, making the horse feel better. “These horses get worse when they are stimulated a lot, so you want a quiet, dark place. Confine the horse in a stall so

TETANUS IN HORSES By Heather Smith Thomas Tetanus is a very serious disease in horses, occurring worldwide. It is caused by toxins produced by Clostridium tetani, a spore-forming bacterium that is present in the digestive tract of many animals and in any soils that are rich in humus and animal manure. Therefore it is generally present in the horse's environment, and any horse that is not protected by vaccination is at risk for this disease. Amy Johnson, DVM, DACVIM (Large Animal Internal Medicine, New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania) says the first sign you might see in a horse with tetanus is a very stiff gait. “The horse would travel with a choppy stride. Many muscles become very stiff and contract continuously, in spasm. Because the muscles of the face and head spasm as well, the horse develops a classic facial expression — with ears standing up erect and pointed backward, the third eyelid prolapsing over part of the eye, and the nostrils flared. The horse looks like he's grimacing, because the muscles of the lips are pulled back, showing the teeth,” she says. The term for this risus sardonicus, or “sardonic grin”, to denote an involuntary smile, and comes from human medicine. “Horse show this abnormal expression, but in subtle cases a horse might not show all of these signs. If you make a threatening gesture toward the eye, however, as if you were going to slap the face, you'll see the third eyelid flash up,” she says. This reflex action is a typical sign of tetanus, and you would not see it in a healthy horse. “As the disease progresses, the horse will stand with

abnormal posture, in what is called a sawhorse stance,” she says. The front feet are farther forward than normal and the hind legs farther back, with the tail held elevated. The jaw muscles become tighter and eventually it becomes difficult or impossible for the horse to open the mouth. “This is called trismus, or lockjaw. As a result it becomes more and more difficult for the horse to eat and drink, eventually reaching the point where he cannot. At the very end stages of the disease the horse may be totally recumbent and unable to stand up. The muscles are very rigid, with the head and neck stretched upward, almost straight up from the shoulders. In the very end stages the horse may seizure and die during a seizure. Severe cases have a high fatality rate. A mild case may recover, if the horse is treated. It depends a lot on how much toxin actually makes it to the spinal cord,” says Johnson. The horse may get tetanus following a puncture wound or surgical wound that becomes contaminated and infected with the clostridium. “The bacteria produce these toxins, which are transported from the wound area into the bloodstream and lymphatics and eventually transported up the nerves and into the spinal cord region. There, they bind to a specific type of cell and cause the clinical signs,” she explains. In addition to the amount of toxin produced—which could depend on the amount of contamination in the wound or how quickly the wound is recognized, cleaned and treated - the time at which treatment is begun

he's not moving around, and use a lot of deep bedding with good traction, in case the horse starts to have trouble getting up and down. We often give these horses drugs to help relax the muscles, to prevent the muscle spasms. Acepromazine is often used because it helps relax the horse. Sometimes valium will help, or even methocarbamol — also a muscle relaxant. These are some of the various drugs that people might use,” says Johnson. “Another thing that's important is to remember to vaccinate the horse even though it actually has the disease. The amount of toxin that is required to produce clinical signs of tetanus does not always confer immunity. If the horse has tetanus, you should go ahead and vaccinate — giving the first tetanus toxoid vaccine at the same time that you are doing all of this other treatment. This will make sure that the horse won't get the disease a second time,” she says. Antitoxin historically has been used in many cases to try to prevent tetanus, as well as treat it, such as in instances where a horse suffers a wound, undergoes surgery or a mare has just foaled and you don't know the vaccination history. “This is still done by a number of veterinarians, if you don't know the history or you know that the animal has not been vaccinated and the horse needs to have surgery or suffers a wound. We still recommend vaccinating every horse (with toxoid) when possible, because very rarely the antitoxin product can cause liver failure. That's why it's better to use the vaccine rather than the antitoxin, because there is much less risk for complications. Tetanus is one of the diseases that can be almost completely prevented by vaccination. “The vaccine is quite good and has a very low incidence of side effects. It is one of the safer vaccines. An annual booster is recommended. If a horse is in the hospital to undergo a surgical procedure, and has not been vaccinated within the last 6 months, we often booster that horse a little bit early. The same thing would apply at a farm—if it's been 6 months since vaccination and the horse gets a wound that you fear might be contaminated, it's a good idea to give the tetanus booster early that year.” By contrast if the horse had been boostered within the past two or three months you might

not need to worry. It's best to keep a pregnant mare's immunities strong so that she can pass some protection to her foal via antibodies in her colostrum. It would be ideal to booster her about 4 to 6 weeks prior to foaling, for peak antibody production. If you don't know the mare's vaccination history, or know she wasn't vaccinated, you could start the foal's immunity with a three-dose series anytime between one and 4 months of age. You could start as early as one month and give one dose per month for 3 months in a row. With foals born to mares that have been vaccinated, the recommendation is to start the foal's three dose series at four to six months of age. Q: What's the first mistake that comes to mind? D J : Pe o p l e t e n d t o underestimate just how much work it is to install a fence. It's costly both in terms of materials and equipment, and in terms of time.

Q: What's the best fence for horses? DJ: No one type of fence will do the job for all situations. That's why there is an almost unlimited number of combinations – wood fence, flex-rails, electric, diamond mesh, there are many types of fence out there. Fencing in a small herd of miniatures is completely different than fencing a Thoroughbred stallion. And fencing broodmares who are turned out 24/7 with their

In most cases, people come to us with a budget, but they don't tend to factor in the extras – things like braced corners and gates. Often, they've underestimated the amount of fence they will need as well. Even if they're fencing an area with a few small paddocks, it usually ends up being more than they budget for. It's important to walk your intended fenceline with a measuring wheel. If you can't find or borrow one, at least walk the fenceline as you would the distance between jumps, counting strides and estimating three

foals is different than fencing performance horses who get outside for only an hour a day. Q: How much space should you provide, per horse? DJ: That's one of the most common mistakes I see – not having enough acreage for the horses you have. As a general rule of thumb, you should have a fenced acre per horse, if you expect to provide them with sustainable pasture. Depending on your grazing and your soil, in some places you might need more than that.

By Karen Briggs, Green Grass Features System Fence's Dwayne Job has seen a few bad fences in his time. Here's his take on how not to make those most common fencing errors. There's a certain science to choosing and installing a horse fence. Sheep and cows are relatively placid creatures who aren't likely to challenge a fence if there's some forage in front of them. But horses have a certain spirit of adventure in their souls – or maybe it's just a spirit of destructiveness! To equines, the grass is always greener on the other side, so fences have to be constructed to withstand their attempts to find out for sure. Not every fence passes that test. Many of the fencing materials available at your local far m store flunk miserably when it comes to horses. Barbed wire, while acceptable for the tough hide of cattle, will rip and tear the more delicate epidermis of an equine; page wire can be a trap for legs and shoes; and high-tensile wire can slice legs to the bone. Even the fencing materials which pass muster aren't perfect: metal pipe is unforgiving, wood is highmaintenance and can splinter, and electric fence can lose its charge and become nothing but a flimsy visual barrier between a horse and the Great Beyond. Dwayne Job, President of Canada's System Fencing Ltd., has been supplying and installing fencing for horses for 22 years. He's seen good fences, and bad ones, and he's been around long enough to know that the type of fence that best suits a customer depends not only on the terrain and the soil on a property, but also on the

Q: How can you keep horses from trashing the paddocks you have? DJ: Often people forget to set up a 'sacrifice paddock' – a small area which can be used for turn-out in muddy conditions. You don't expect grass to grow in a sacrifice paddock, so it doesn't matter if it gets wrecked. I usually recommend that the sacrifice paddock be positioned somewhere close to the barn, but (if possible), out of sight of the house, because it won't be pretty! In most situations 75'x 75' is all you need. A sacrifice paddock can also be useful when you have a horse on limited turn-out because of a healing injury. Q: What are some of the mistakes you see with electric fence? DJ: Horse-people used to avoid electric fence because they worried it wasn't safe, but the newer types available are much more visible and have become very popular. Because a good fence is an investment, many people now add a strand of electric to help keep horses off the fence and help it look nicer, longer. But you need to buy the right type of electric for horses. The standard electric wire you buy in spools at the farm store is designed to be a two- to three-year fence, max. It's just not sturdy enough to withstand constant flexing from the wind, wear and tear from the horses, and ultraviolet radiation from the sun. And because it's very thin, horses are more likely to get caught up in it and get hurt. Thicker electric ropes and tapes are more suitable for horses and last longer. The stronger the gauge of wire, the more it will withstand, but the plastic in the fence will still break down eventually thanks to u/v. Expect to get three to four years out of a better-quality electric fence. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Q: Do most people ground their electric fences properly? DJ: No, that's something that's fairly poorly understood – an improperly grounded fence won't deliver the charge it's supposed to. If you're running one strand of electric, you need three galvanized ground rods, half an inch in diameter and six feet long. In most areas, you'd bury those 10 feet apart in a place where the ground stays moist – for example, near a downspout or the roofline of the barn. You can arrange them in a line, or a triangle. If you have a multi-strand electric fence, make sure the top line is electrified and the bottom two are attached to the ground rods instead of the fencer (unit which delivers the electric charge). The hot line plus the ground line completes the circuit and makes the fence much more effective, especially in winter when there is two feet of snow to contend with and horses are wearing blankets. Q: Is an electric fence on its own, enough to contain horses? DJ: If you install it on those little plastic posts, no – I would use it as a temporary barrier if you're cordoning off a section of your pasture, for example, but I wouldn't trust it as a perimeter fence. Those posts are far too flimsy. A good fence needs to be both a physical and a psychological barrier. Q: How do you rig up gates with an electric fence? DJ: Putting the strand of electric overhead in a gate situation seldom works well. Anywhere where electric fence is dangling, is an opportunity for horses to get hurt. It's much better to run the strand of electric through an old section of garden hose or conduit, and bury it, six inches deep or more. Many people don't understand that

the electric charge only has to go one way along the fence, so if you only have a single gate you don't have to necessarily complete the circuit. Q: What other gate problems do you see? DJ: A lot of times, people don't really think about the traffic flow on their farms when they set up paddocks. You need to think about how you'll navigate from one field to the next. A field with a gate that's a big hike from the barn, will never get used. Q: What other installation errors have you run across? DJ: Before you begin, know where the property boundaries are! And know something about your soil type, the local watersheds, and where any buried utilities might be. It's no fun starting to dig post holes only to encounter a water line, telephone line … or bedrock six inches down. Plan for predators, too. If you have a lot of coyotes in your area, for example, you might want to run a strand of electric down at their level, or use a fence like a diamondmesh. Q: Any other thoughts? DJ: The only type of fencing that doesn't rely on tension to make it safe, is board fencing. All other types require some sort of bracing, at least in the corners. That may mean that some, or all, of the posts need to be set in concrete, depending on your soil. A slack fence is an unsafe fence. Do-it-yourselfers sometimes try to save money by stretching out the distance and using fewer posts – but the longer the space between posts, the greater the chance of horses getting tangled up in the fence. I generally recommend 12' centres for most fence installations. Board fence is done on 7' 10” centres.

gather it to the pole so it isn't flapping and hold it close to your body. Never drop it! If you must, pass it to your ground crew. Although carrying any flag is a big responsibility, you have more leeway with organizational flags and if needed, they can be dropped. If it's your first parade or your horse is skittish, leave the American flag to those more experienced. To introduce your horse to a flag, tie some material or a plastic bag to a pole. From the ground, approach him with the flag gathered. Let him investigate it, then unroll it and carefully wave it near him. Next, get on and ride up to someone holding it. Let your horse investigate the flag and when you can ride to it from both directions, pick it up. Be careful as now the flag is over your horse's head and in his line of sight. Keep the flag tight to the pole. As you walk forward, he will probably step sideways away from the flag. As long as he's not running off, don't worry. If he's not going straight, just keep him moving forward. Encourage him with your voice. He should start to settle and straighten out. Only when your horse will let you approach the flag, pick it up and carry it from both sides, should you unfurl the

Summer's here and it's time for rodeos, fairs and plenty of hometown parades. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or first-timer, parading is fun and challenging, though unlike other events, it's impossible to train your horse for the variety of unexpected things he'll encounter, yet there are things you can do to have a positive experience. The biggest concern is how your horse will react to parade-goers who consider horses big puppies and want to pet their faces and rumps or kids running and jumping in front of you to retrieve tossed candy. If it's your first parade, stay in the center of your unit or with an experienced horse. Be alert but not so up-tight that you upset your horse. If you start to loose control, get off. You'll have better control from the ground simply because your horse could fall on the slick pavement, even if he's wearing shoes. If need be, leave the parade route. No parade is worth getting injured. Also it helps to have

some experienced handlers walking along with the unit in case of an emergency. If you're wearing a costume, try it out beforehand. Let your horse get used to the feel and sound of it. Be careful about tying decorations in your horse's tail. They may be heavy and when he swishes his tail, it may swat him harder than usual. Make sure all decorative accessories are securely attached. If your using a long banner that goes over the rump and down your horse's sides, practice riding with the banner a few times so he gets used to it brushing against his legs. Carrying a flag or banner is a big part of parading, but carrying the American flag is a very important responsibility. Be certain your horse is ready. The American flag must be carried by a horse that's under control at all times because if something happens, you can't just throw this flag on the ground! If you are carrying the American flag and something happens,

flag to its full length. Be prepared. The slightest breeze can cause the flag to touch your horse's rump, hook on his ears or wrap around his face. Be ready. If something happens, remain calm, keep your voice low and try to remove the flag as quickly as possible. Even if you've carried flags before, it doesn't hurt to practice beforehand. If possible, use a flag holder, otherwise rest the pole on your toe. Remember to never tie the flag's pole to your stirrup in case you need to get rid of it in an emergency. Don't overlook your horse's turnout, especially for small parades. Anytime you ride in public you're not only promoting yourself, but the entire equine community. Your horse doesn't need to be clipped and polished as if for the showring, but he does need to be free of tail knots and giant manure stains. His hooves should be trimmed and shoes tightened. Tack should be clean and in good condition. It's exciting to be riding down Main Street with folks waving and “ooo-ing” and “aww-ing” at your horse. By getting back to the basics with a little extra training and preplanning, parading could soon become one of your favorite equine events!
