You need to get to know and learn to read the signs of negative thoughts and emotions in your horse as well as the positive ones, both on the ground and when riding. Know that every horse is capable of having all of these emotions and behaviors given the right situation, so it's our job to bring out only the positive ones.

How do you know if your horse is happy? He can't wag his tail like a dog, smile like a human or purr like a cat, so how can you tell? Being a horse lover, I really care about how my horse feels in his relationship with me. Does he like to be with me, be taught by me, perform with me? So I put a lot of effort into seeing life from my horse's point of view and setting things up for success. Does that mean sometimes my horse is unhappy? I'm sure there are times, but I'm not paralyzed by that. I try to catch it early and then become more conscious of how I caused it in order to avoid it next time. Most important, I take responsibility for my horse's behavior when with me, because he was fine until I showed up! Things that make horses happy What makes one horse happy is not necessarily what makes another horse happy. Horsenality™ is going to be a huge guide for you here. For example, my horse Jazzy (Right-Brain Introvert) needs me to go slow in the warm-up, waiting for him to relax and then want to offer more, whereas my horse Allure (Left-Brain Extrovert) needs me to encourage him to have fun and keep things pretty lively. I've made the mistake of going slowly with Allure, and he either takes over and takes off (doesn't want to be with me anymore) or just shuts down and resigns himself to what he knows is going to be a really boring time. So get to know your horse's

Body Language Most people have learned that ears back means watch out, that the horse is going to bite, charge, kick… but reading a horse's body language is not something many people learn to make an art of. I think it's vital to become good at reading horses because the sooner you can tell what's going on, the sooner you can adjust your approach for more positive results. As you learn to read horses at increasingly refined levels you start to notice the little things like

• Tight back • Hollow or arched back • Tucked, tight hindquarters • Tight tail •“J” tail • High, tense tail • Swishing tail • Tense ribcage • Shallow breathing • Holding breath • Rapid breathing • Forceful snorts • Can't stand still • Quick, tense steps • Refusing to move • Shrinking away from you • Turning away from you • Want to bite or kick you •Doesn't want to touch you, or you him Left-Brain Extrovert Encourage his ideas, use energy, be provocative, have fun. Right-Brain Extrovert Encourage your horse to move if he needs to, then give him something to focus on. Right-Brain Introvert Go with his need to go slow, stop or think about things; be gentle; wait for him to breathe and ask questions. Left-Brain Introvert Go with his need to be slow at first but be mentally fast. Wait for the question; get him mentally engaged.

Nine times out of ten, when a horse gets upset, backing off the pressure is the right thing to do. And don't let anyone tell you that the horse will think he's won. He's a prey animal, and if his safety or dignity feels threatened, he's going to run or defend himself. So back off, help him settle down, restore the trust and make a fresh start. It will work better that way. And can you see

What to do When you see your horse's expression change from positive to negative, what should you do? The first thing is not to panic! If you start to worry, you'll find yourself shrinking back and relinquishing leadership, and that brings on a whole other set of behavioral changes in your horse. Right-brain horses get more worried and distant, and left-brain horses seize the opportunity to get the better of you. You have to maintain your composure as your horse's leader, so don't worry or feel sorry for him; just change what you are doing. Know that horses are not like people; they live in the moment, so they react quickly to what they perceive as negative or positive. Although their primary emotions are a lot like ours (fear, frustration, anger), they don't get upset at themselves or feel sorry for others. Those are what humans do. GREAT LAKES STATE FAIR It's happening! After a threeyear hiatus, the State Fair is returning to Michigan as the G r e a t L a ke s S t a t e Fa i r. Michigan's first State Fair was held in 1849, making it one of the oldest state fairs in the country. The tradition now continues with a tremendous amount of support and outreach from the agriculture and business communities, as well as people from all across Michigan. The Great Lakes State Fair will run at the Suburban Collection Showplace Labor Day Weekend. “We are extremely thrilled that the Suburban Collection Showplace will be partnering with the Great Lakes Agricultural Fair Board to return this awesome event to the state of Michigan,” said Blair Bowman, owner of the Suburban Collection Showplace. “With Michigan being the second largest agricultural state in the nation, this is the perfect opportunity to highlight the amazing products grown and manufactured right here in our great state.” The Great Lakes State Fair will run at the Suburban Collection Showplace from Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3, 2012. Sponsors include Meijer, ITC Holdings, Genisys Credit Union, the Suburban Collection Showplace, C.F. Burger Creamery and Powers Distributing. Additional sponsors will be named as they become finalized. The family-focused event will be jam-packed with all the typical excitement of previous State Fairs, including animals, agriculture, Michiganmade products, food and beverages, entertainment, a midway and carnival rides. The Great Lakes State Fair has also

partnered with the Shriners to hold The Detroit Shrine Circus under The Big Top during the fair, with tickets included in the allinclusive admission price. There will be plenty of additional parking available for the duration of the event. Equine events at the Great Lakes State Fair will center around draft horses. Starting Friday, August 31st, at 1pm Halter Classses for Percherons, Belgians, and Clydesdale/Shire horses. Saturday features Cart Classes starting at noon with Mares, Men's and Ladies' divisions; these will be followed by Junior classes with an 11-14 year old age division and 15-20 year old age division. Sunday, September 2nd, has Youth Showmanship Classes starting at 10am with divisions for 9-14 year olds and 15-20 year olds; these are followed by Youth Decorated Horse classes with the same age divisions. Monday, September 3rd, the Fair will close with Hitch Classes starting at 10am; the divisions include Registered Mare Pairs and a Stallions, Geldings, Grade Mares class. Monday also includes Drafts Under Saddle classes with divisions for English and Western. There will also be a Parade of Champions over the weekend! HIGHLAND PHOTO CONTEST The Highland Trail Riders are holding their 4th Annual Amateur Photo Contest. A horse (or horses) must be the focal point of each photo. MHSRA’S NATIONAL TEAM LANSING, MI (June 2012) The Michigan High School Rodeo Association will be sending a team of eight girls and seven boys, each of which has earned a position on their national team. They will be traveling to Rock Springs, Wyoming for the week of July 15th through July 21 st to compete in the 64th Annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR). Team members will be competing in their respective events of bareback riding, goat tying, steer wrestling, pole bending, team roping, barrel racing, calf roping, breakaway roping, bull riding, and queen's contest. Featuring over 1500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian Provinces, and Australia, the National High School Finals is the world's largest rodeo. In addition to competing for over $200,000 in prizes, NHSFR contestants will also be competing for more than $350,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the National High School Rodeo National Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top twenty after two Go-Rounds of intense competition before advancing to Saturday night's (27)

Understanding how to sit with equal weight on both seat bones, understanding how to weight and unweight each seat bone independently of the other, and keeping shoulders aligned with the hips can make many riding problems go away. A very slight shifting of weight onto one seat bone or the other can help the horse give the right answer as he follows the rider's weight. For example, when the rider starts from the halt sitting straight with equal weight in both seat bones, she can give the horse clear communication when they start circles and eventually lateral work. Later on in the training scale, the rider's ability to shift slightly from one seat bone to the other while staying straight and centered over the horse's spine is essential to correct flying changes. Many riders blame the horse when he goes crooked rather than considering that he may be giving them feedback about their own crookedness. A horse may act out because of a sore back and the rider may blame the saddle instead of realizing that continual riding with her seat bones unequally weighted could be the cause. The question “Is it me or is it my horse?” can be hard to answer when you ride the same horse all the time. The rider with just one horse will benefit from the help of an instructor or experienced observer who can give them feedback about whether the rider's crookedness is making the horse crooked or vice versa. Gradually, both horse and rider can develop a feel for 'straight' and help each other stay centered. Our students have the opportunity to test their seat skills by riding horses of all sizes, personalities and training levels. They learn a lot from their mounts as they adjust to these differences. Riders with their own horse might take lessons on other mounts from time to time to help them figure out, “Is it me or is it my horse?”

SEAT BONES FROM THE HORSE’S SIDE OF THE SADDLE By Nancy Wesolek-Sterrett, Dressage Dept. Head, Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre When a horse has trouble moving straight or difficulty bending in one direction or another, or the rider cannot circle without pulling on the inside rein, the first thing I think of is not, “What's wrong with this horse?” I consider that the crookedness may be feedback and immediately check the rider's position. Is she sitting up straight? Sitting straight means that the rider is centered over the horse's center of gravity with equal weight on both seat bones. As well as, the rider's shoulders directly over the seat bones. This is important because unless a rider can sit this way, she will not be able to subtly modify those seat bone pressures correctly to communicate direction, bend, speed and other information to her horse. When the rider's seat bones contradict other aids, the horse gets confused, crooked, or offers other feedback that telegraphs the message, “What did you say?” At the halt, the horse's spine should be straight from poll to tail. The rider's nose, chin, breastbone, belly button and spine all align with the horse's spine. From the side, the rider's ear, shoulder, hip and heel should align. As the horse moves, the rider keeps equal weight on both seat bones to indicate a straight direction of travel. Or she weights and unweights her seat bones in nuanced ways that influence the direction of travel in bends, circles, canter leads, lateral movements, etc. To get a square halt, she needs to put her weight equally on both seat bones again. If the rider pays attention, the horse broadcasts clear feedback about as to how he feels the weight distribution in her seat

bones and what it suggest that he do with his body. Take the example of a crooked rider whose default position puts more weight on her left seat bone than on her right. When going to the left, the horse probably bends and circles correctly. However, when the rider asks the horse to circle right, the horse may drift out to the left, fall in through the right shoulder, or have difficulty picking up the right lead. Ridden continually this way, the horse may develop more muscle on the left side to carry the crooked weight and become asymmetrical in the pelvis or hips. Small things can make a huge difference for the horse. I recall one horse whose rider trained him correctly to turn on with the rider's weight slightly heavier on the inside seat bone. He was sold to a rider who used a 'spiraling seat' to turn her horse. While this is very useful seat imagery, the rider misunderstood the full concept and overturned her shoulders, pushing her weight onto her outside seat bone. The horse was confused and the new rider was frustrated. (Sit on a swivel chair and try it.) If rider sits heavily on the left seat bone, horse may dive to right or may drift to left to get more underneath the rider. The horse may have difficulty getting the right canter lead, refuse to yield from the right leg because the left seat bone is blocking the request. A jumper may run out to the left in front of a jump or drift to the left on landing. Unequal weight may put a lazy horse behind the leg and slow him down. Given confusing signals, a hot horse might get hotter and run from the pressure.

Certainly a horse with unevenly developed musculature, saddle soreness, teeth issues, or dozens of other major or minor issues may compensate in ways that put the rider crooked in the saddle. Regardless of the cause, however, if the rider matches the horse's crookedness, it will never go away. The rider that becomes responsible for being 'straight' herself, helps her horse feel what 'straight' should be so that he can figure out how to get there. Riders ambitious to get to the next level in their sport sometimes hope that buying a horse that is at or above that level is the way to move up. Once they are in the saddle, however, they find themselves stuck right where they were. Worse yet, the higher level horse they thought would be their ticket to ribbons winds up 'dumbing down' its performance to the rider's lower level. Often, the problem is very basic. The rider has never really learned how to sit truly straight with equal weight on both seat bones. The seat bones are literally the seat of all communication with the horse. Correctly or incorrectly they are always sending information to the horse. Riders who pay attention to their seat bone messages and the feedback their horse gives about them will become able to truly influence their horse stride by stride. BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS The column this month will be short, since the lure of outdoor activities trumps my seat in front of the computer. Of course, time in the saddle at the Brighton Recreation Area is right at the top of the list. A lot of people have been riding the trails this season, both in organized events and informally. We're still hearing about the Competitive Trail Ride that was held in April, and the big event in May received great reviews. This was the one where we invited our friends from the Ionia Trail Riders and other clubs to come and spend the weekend, and a number of them did. People began pulling into the Horseman's Camp Friday night and the organized activities started Saturday morning. The folks from Ionia and BTRA began to register for a Poker Ride and were offered coffee and pastries to get them going. They were joined by other riders who came for the day, and the trails soon began to see a lot of traffic. Several hours later the riders began to return to the Staging Area and were able to relax and sip cool beverages under our new pavilion. After the Ionia riders and other participants were formally welcomed, the winners of the Poker Ride were announced and following that, food was served up. Many of the campers returned to their sites to tend to their horses and some even went on a short ride. Then they came back to the Staging Area, sat around a big camp fire, and listened to live music. Our friend and the new operator at the Brighton Rec Stable, Amy Carlson, played the guitar and treated us to sweet melodies. The weekend was capped off

with more riders coming in Sunday morning and the trails were again put to good use. July will be highlighted by the annual BTRA annual picnic and open ride. We'll tell you more about that later but right now, we have some horses that are begging to be ridden. ~ Mark Delaney, BTRA Secretary

Welcome to the July GLASSED newsletter! GLASS-ED had our two shows of the season. The first show was the annual Burlwood Farms Benefit show held at Equine Line in Plainwell, Mi on May 19th. We raised $1000 for Margaret Spencer. Margaret owns Burlwood Farms and was injured in a horseback riding accident. She is a long time supporter of GLASS-ED. Thanks to everyone who gave their support! Our second show was on June 9th at Mystic Marsh Farm in Delton, Mi. Both shows had full rosters of riders and gave us a great kickoff to the 2012 show season. By the time this newsletter comes out, we will have had our third show of the season on June 23rd at Lamoreaux Ridge Farm in Grandville, Mi. We will have three shows in July. The first one is a two day show on July 7th and 8th at Willow Tree Equestrian Center in Bangor, Mi. The next is July 21st at Skyline Stables in Battle Creek, Mi and the third is a t D e r b y s h i r e Fa r m s i n Stevensville, Mi on July 29th. If you are not ready to show, consider coming out to observe or to volunteer. Mark your calendars!!! GLASS-ED is sponsoring the USDF "L" Education Program this fall. Part 1, Session A - A Judge's Perspective, is scheduled for September 15th and 16th with instructor Elizabeth Madlener. Session A topics will suit anybody who would like to have more insight into what judges are looking for and how they operate. Topics included in this session are - responsibilities and conduct of the judge; rules governing dressage competitions and judging; knowledge and ability required of a good

EQUINE LADIES Our July 16 meeting will be held at Candy Young's home, in Dowagiac, MI. Her farrier, Greg Wilson, will be giving a talk and demonstration with questions to follow. The meeting will start at 7:00 pm. We had a very full June calendar: a trail ride at Russ Forest on June 9, the Steve Lantvit Clinic, LaPorte, Indiana the 16th and 17th, and our regular monthly meeting June 18 at Dona Sherman's in Hartford. I will report on these in the next month's issue. We don't have an August meeting because of the Berrien County Youth Fair. For our September meeting we will again be at the beautiful new horse facility, Concord Ridge, in St. Joseph, MI. They will give a driving demonstration with their Friesian horses and we will all be able to go for a carriage ride. Our club is open to any woman 18 years old or over. Equine Ladies is a great resource for meeting new horse people, finding someone to ride with and learn about equine related subjects. MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING The Flaming Hoofprints have finally gotten brave. This journey into full-fledged Competitive Mounted Orienteering is a steady but slow process for us. Last year we made it to more rides then ever and even earned a consistency award. This year we have reached another mile stone, we actually spent the night at the campground. A good friend of mine was absolutely correct when she said that I worry more about the picket line then the horses. So, for those of you who have never picketed, do

your homework so that it is correct but don't hesitate to try it. Our horses did great. Even the 16.3 Hand thoroughbred when the picket line was not as high as it should be didn't have any trouble. We are still shopping for some equipment to make the job easier and the picket line tighter but being able to catch a nap in a lawn chair is worth the effort. This was also our first trip to Elba Equestrian Center and what a treat it was. A great big thank you goes out to the ride managers Greg and Linda who did a fabulous job with food and making the ride challenging. The proceeds from this ride will support Horses for Hope which is a wonderful program allowing children with cancer to connect with horses. After a moving speech from Greg I realize the truth in the quote from Winston Churchill, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” If you have ever introduced someone to the world of horses and allowed them to feel that connection I applaud you. Keep doing what you do. Well it is official that there will not be any rides at Hungerford this summer. Please continue to check our website at micmo.org for changes to the ride schedule. The July 20th and 21st ride will be held at Silver Creek State Park in Hamilton. Due to the fact that this is a Friday, Saturday ride the potluck will be on Friday evening instead of Saturday. RENAISSANCE EQUESTRIAN "Horse Power" has really taken over Belle Isle in Detroit this year with the help of our beloved fourlegged friends and the return of the Detroit Grand Prix. The second annual Equestrian's Dream Trail Ride on May 19th at Belle Isle Park in Detroit benefitting the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute was a huge success again. The Detroit Mounted Police lead a procession of over 75 horses around the 5.5 mile route on Belle Isle Park with ample room to ride on the grass or drive your horse and carriage. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to every Rider and Volunteer who came out to help us reach our donation goal for Karmanos Cancer Institute. This Charity Ride welcomed horse lovers from all over the state to ride together, no matter if they prefer to show English/Western, compete in Dressage, drive carriages, or simply trail ride. In addition, it was a great opportunity for the horse community to come together with all of our different horse breeds. Spectators from around Metro Detroit said that it was so beautiful to see horses and riders on the island again, especially as they passed the conservatory, fountains, and casino. For riders that attended, nothing can beat taking a picture with your friends, club members, or barn mates with the Renaissance Center and Detroit Riverfront skyline in the background! Our younger youth members had quite an experience watching a painted turtle lay her eggs in the horse staging area drive as the adults made camp our “home” for the weekend. The new trail along Lake Ovid is amazing! Thanks to all who made that possible. As the weekend went on some of our kids learned how to make breakfast on an open fire in the BIG fry pan. (On this and every future exercise, if you can see more than the outside corner of his inside eye, he is overbent.) c. Light left leg pressure about 6 inches or so behind the cinch to slightly tip his hips to the inside. d. Outside (left) indirect rein, to block his shoulders from bulging to the outside, and to prevent his head from tipping too far to the inside.

FORWARD, STRAIGHT, BALANCED, Part VII By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 Since “forward, straight and balanced” is the key to success in any riding discipline, it makes sense to incorporate a variety of exercises to help you achieve this goal. Again, this material is taken from the four-part series that Cyril and I did for Horse & Rider with the magazine's writer, Sue M. Copeland. This month, we're going to look at how lateral work helps to increase the degree of collection in your horse. The fact that I now want you to do lateral work may seem puzzling since we stressed the importance of “forward” and “straight” in the previous six parts in this series. Do not get confused and forget that your horse's body must be straight even when he moves on a curved line, such as a circle. On a curved line, your horse's legs should step exactly where his front legs just took off from, moving along two parallel tracks like a train on a curve. If he does not do this, he cannot be balanced. Your horse also will need to be forward to do lateral exercises—but he will be forward in a lateral direction. In some of the lateral exercises I will give you, your horse's front and hind legs will travel on three, or even four parallel tracks as he moves forward and sideways. The reason is that this adds to the degree of collection that you have achieved by doing the previous exercises. It does so by increasing the amount of weight your horse will shift onto his hind end and the compression of his body. Increased weight carried by the hind end and increased compression of the body leads to increased suppleness, flexibility, strength, coordination, and control. Lateral exercises also

improve your horse's responsiveness and movement while helping you get independent control over his front and back ends. This in turn allows you to correctly set him up quietly, lightly, and easily for more advanced and demanding maneuvers in any discipline— faster turnarounds, longer sliding stops, more “lift” on the rail, and lightening-fast barrel turns.

2. As you exit the half-circle, prepare for the change of bend by releasing your right-bend aids and applying a slight left opening rein to straighten his head and neck, plus slight right leg pressure to move his hips back to the left. Maintain straight alignment for about 20 feet.

Exercise #1: Change in Bend on Serpentine What it is: This exercise is a change in the bend (or arc) of your horse's body from right to left, or vice versa, on a serpentine pattern.

3. Reverse the aids to bend him to the left before guiding him on a half-circle in that direction. Repeat the serpentine back and forth across your work area. You know I love to train “outside the box,” and a serpentine is a fun pattern to ride in an open area. If you're lucky, you may have an open field with several trees spaced fairly evenly apart that make good objects to ride a serpentine around. If you have trouble visualizing the three half-circles in a serpentine outside of your riding arena, place cones in a field or pasture at the midpoint of each half circle to use as a guide. Be creative with your training to make it more fun for both you and your horse.

Why it helps: Working on a serpentine ratchets up your overall body control while making the horse's body more supple. It does the latter because to bend, your horse must stretch the muscles on the outside of his body and compress the muscles on the inside. Bending also puts more weight on his inside hind leg; and the more weight he has on his hind legs, the more energy his hind end generates. That energy translates into power and athleticism! How to do it: You may practice doing the serpentine pattern at a walk in order to become familiar with it before you pick up the trot. 1. First, warm up your horse, and then guide him on to a 45- to 50-foot half-circle to the right using the following aids: a. Right leg contact just behind the cinch, or at a spot at which your horse is responsive. Light leg pressure here will arc his

glutathione peroxidase, protecting the inside of the cell, while vitamin E guards the exterior cell membrane. Together, they neutralize damaging free radicals and therefore improve immune function. Therefore, many vitamin E supplements are packaged with selenium. Look closely at the dosing guidelines. For example, if your supplement offers 500 IU of vitamin E and 1 mg of selenium per ounce, and you want to supplement 2,000 IUs of vitamin E, you will also be feeding 4 mg of selenium! A better approach would be to first evaluate the selenium in your horse's diet, and then decide on supplementation. You may find that all you need is a plain vitamin E supplement, with no selenium added.

Selenium Overload: Look at Your Horse’s Hooves and Hair! Dr. Juliet Getty • www.gettyequinenutrition.com Selenium – you know your horse needs it, but you may be overdoing it. It's easy to do, with selenium added to just about every commercial feed or supplement. And how much is in the grass or hay that you're feeding? You can't tell by looking at it -- selenium levels have no effect on the appearance, smell, or even the taste of the hay. Selenium content in soils varies according to region, alkalinity, and moisture conditions. In areas of drought, when the roots search deeper into the soil for water, they encounter more selenium. Certain parts of the US and Canada typically have more selenium than others. The illustration* below gives you an idea of the selenium concentration in your area. Be aware, however, that even if your area is considered low or adequate, pockets of high-selenium soils may exist throughout the region. Problems arise when your forage is already adequate in selenium and you add a commercial feed or supplement that contains additional amounts of this mineral. Therefore, it is always advisable to have your hay and pasture tested. Your local county extension service may offer analysis services or you can ask for a referral from your equine veterinarian. Too much selenium affects hair and hooves A consistent daily intake of elevated selenium levels will lead to a chronic condition known as alkali disease. Its signs are hair loss, a short tail or straggly mane. Hooves will also be affected – they become soft, chip easily, and cracks can develop around the coronary band. The reason? A change in keratin's structure. Keratin, the protein found in hair and hoof

tissue, relies on sulfur to maintain its integrity. High amounts of selenium can take sulfur's place, leading to tissue breakdown. Selenium has a very narrow range of safety Adequate selenium is needed for muscle, respiratory, and thyroid health. Too much, on the other hand, can lead to tissue damage; this can be avoided by maintaining a safe range. I recommend limiting total intake to no more than 0.6 ppm (mg/kg). Add up all the sources of selenium, including what naturally exists in your hay and/or pasture. A level between 1 and 3 mg per day is ideal for an 1100 lb (500 kg) adult horse that is not exercised heavily. Athletes or larger breeds, however, require slightly more -- between 3 and 5 mg.

Pay attention to labels and do the calculations Most supplements or feeds that contain selenium will have its concentration shown on the label, making it easy to make the right choices for your horse. Generally, it will be listed as parts per million (ppm), which is the same as mg per kg (mg/kg) of feed. Here's a simple way to calculate the number of mg of selenium you're feeding:

Evaluate selenium when supplementing vitamin E Vitamin E works with selenium as an “antioxidant team.” Selenium is part of the enzyme

Example #1: 4 lbs of feed that contains 0.6 ppm (mg/kg) of selenium. Step 1: Convert 4 lbs to kg by dividing by 2.2: 4/2.2 = 1.82 kg Step 2: Multiply 0.6 ppm (mg/kg) by kg of feed: 0.6 mg/kg X 1.82 kg = 1.09 mg of selenium Example #2: 2 ounces of supplement contains 10 ppm (mg/kg) of selenium. Step 1: Convert ounces to kg by multiplying by .0284: 2 X .0284 = .057 kg Step 2: Multiply 10 ppm (mg/kg) by kg of supplement: 10 mg/kg X .057 kg = 0.57 mg of selenium Dr. Juliet Getty has taught and consulted on equine nutrition for more than 20 years. NOTE FROM THE EDITOR I can’t get over that it’s been sixteen years since I and one salesperson, Anne McComas, started Saddle Up! Magazine. I am so grateful to be able to work in a field that includes my childhood passion, horses. I remember my mother saying to me when I purchased my first two year old Quarter Horse to train: “I thought you’d outgrow that.” I was thirty-seven then. I don’t think you can outgrow the love of horses! There are so many aspects and riding disciplines with horses, how could you ever get bored? Maybe you’ve excelled in western riding and now it’s time to try English. Maybe your old reliable gelding isn’t as quick as he used to be at barrels and it’s time to start a new, younger horse. There is nothing like having a 1250 lb. animal trained so well that he practically moves with your thoughts; or the thrill of opening up a retired race horse on a straight away. I love horses and I always will, no matter how old I am. It’s the scent, the feel, the love of your trusted friend at your side that keeps us horse lovers coming back for more! No mom, I will never outgrow horses! When I first started Saddle Up! Magazine, I had a computer, a fax machine and a passion for what I was doing. My horses were still being boarded and I couldn’t wait to have them in my own backyard. Now, in 2012, my horses are in my backyard, I have three computers, a scanner, a fax machine and the most wonderful invention to desktop publishing ever...the internet! I rarely receive “real” photos that I have to scan, the fax machine is almost in retirement, hurray for email! I love technology almost as much as horses (almost). One person that I could not do this job without is my assistant editor, Amy. She is on her eleventh year with Saddle Up! and she has been an absolute blessing. I know that Amy will have to leave someday and get what I call “a real job.” She has been in college full-time at U of M Flint since the fall of 2008. She will receive a bachelors degree majoring in English, and minoring in History in the Spring of 2013. It’s only a matter of time before I will have to train a new person for the office. I figure if I can train a two year old Quarter Horse, I can train a new employee for the office (even though I don’t want to)! I wish Amy the best when she does leave, but I will miss our walks to the mailbox and PJ day. As you can tell, our dress is very casual in the office. Dave Schroeder is our resident cowboy salesman who travels the west side of Michigan developing new accounts. He is actually a cowboy and takes trips out west to herd cattle and other cowboy stuff. He is a wonderful addition to the Saddle Up! staff and a dear friend. Another blessing of the internet is our website for Saddle Up! and Facebook page where you can read our entire magazine online. We have a great following on Facebook and look forward to our readers posts. An equine community has developed around the magazine, a network of friends. Thank you to all our readers and advertisers for your years of patronage. Amy, Dave and I appreciate your business and support. We look forward to serving you in the years to come.
