WORLD RECORD RIDE On June 13th something wonder ful is going to happen…The American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA), with the help of all trail riders in the United States along with ACTHA's large loyal sponsorship support, will be accomplishing something that has never been done before and may never be done again! Thousands of trail riders, with heart and appreciation for what the horse has done for mankind, will assemble in every state in the union and be a part of the new World Record for the most horses ever assembled for a peacetime cause…our Horse Rescues! They will have a gay ole time “casually” competing along a six mile trail near them. Along the trail will be a series of safe, fun and natural trail obstacles. They and their friends will cheer each other on for the best execution of the obstacle possible. Each obstacle is being judged by helpful trained judges. There will be over 1,000 winners from 3 divisions. There is a spot for everyone - even those not wishing to compete. (However, only those who do compete will be counted in the Record!) Best of all, proceeds (after the actual real modest costs) goes to charity…horse rescues in dire need and horse programs aimed at a cure for this tragedy! “There are many things that astound me about this attempt,” states Tom Scrima, ACTHA's GM. “I could talk about the incredible generosity of our sponsors, or the wonderful Guinness people who are working hard
alongside ACTHA and the HSUS to make it official… but what touches me most is that over 1,000 volunteers are making it possible for us to raise hundreds of thousands for horse rescues and programs in one day. The profits from this effort would be non-existent were it not for them. The fact that they are dedicating weeks of their time in preparation for this unique one-time event tells me our industry and the horse will continue to thrive.” So, get out there and sign up for a ride near you! On June 13th you'll see them everywhere…simply go to www.actha.us. Don't be left behind! Ride for the rescues! Sponsors always welcomed. ACTHA's Mission: To provide an enjoyable venue showcasing the wonderful attributes of the great American trail horse, granting them the recognition they so richly deserve. To maintain a registry open to all breeds and a point designation system which will stay with each horse for its lifetime, thereby adding to their value and distinction. To enable the humane treatment of horses in need. Visit our website for a list of current sponsors and breed associations. Michigan's ride will be at Fort Custer Recreation Area in Augusta, MI. Contact Diane Marcina for more info: diane@dianemarcina.com. Ohio's ride will be held in Canton, OH. For info call Steve at (330) 806-7867 or gal110_12@yahoo.com. For more information, other ride sites and sign up contact visit www.actha.us.

MSUE has chosen Rick Foster, Ph.D., to direct the new Institute for Greening Michigan: Leveraging Natural and Human Assets for Prosperity. Foster, former vice president for programs a t t h e W. K . She will lead a team of MSU Extension educators spread across all 83 Michigan counties and work closely with MSU faculty members to help define the hot-button issues for agriculture throughout the state. “Since Dr. Powers joined MSU in 2006, she has been a leader in issues that affect animal agriculture and the environment,” said Tom Coon, MSU Extension director. “Her focus and broad understanding of

Dr. Powers is well suited to provide leadership on the integration of research with Extension because that has been the model of her scholarship throughout her career.” Powers will remain director of environmental stewardship for animal agriculture and will continue to develop collaborative multidisciplinary research and Extension programming to enhance environmental stewardship in animal agriculture. “I'm looking forward to working with the many capable educators and researchers to help keep agriculture a thriving industry in Michigan,” Powers said. “I have a lot of respect for the farmers and agribusiness people in this state and I know that we, as a team, will do our best to serve them well.” Powers has a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a master's degree and doctorate degree from the University of Florida. Congratulations to event organizers Gary and Sharon Fortin and their team of volunteers! This year's event was held May 1. It was well attended with hundreds of spectators watching twelve teams plow wildlife food plots. Four wagon teams gave rides to the public. SHTRA thanks team owners Kevin & Kerry Dutcher, Amber & T.J. Hunt, Russ & Julie Stickle, and Gary Fortin's team driven by Myron Karsten for hauling folks to the plow site. Harold Toby and Burt Cooper allowed their single horse and carts to be driven by the public to get their hands on driving experience. Awesome! Westlor Designs and SHTRA donated draft halters to the participant teams. The Country Store of St. Johns also donated money for this fundraiser. Bill Fourney's Countryline Concession's once again had excellent food and hot coffee for the teams, volunteers and park visitors. After lunch, an informal spring pull had ten teams moving the stoneboat. Tracy Thomas’ team topped out with a full pull of 8070 lbs! Don Brown was second and Dave Gaute was third. A 50/50 raffle was held and a Vera Thornton original print of last year's event was won by Tracy Thomas. Many thanks go to the SHTRA members who donated their day to this unique event. WESTERN MI APPALOOSA REG. Well, we made it through the first Appaloosa show of the season with some wild, wet, windy and did I mention COLD weather. Sure was glad we were ©2010 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • JUNE 2010 (28)
at an inside facility. I was also very glad the youth had lots of chili and hot chocolate available because I'm sure I had a gallon or more of the hot chocolate! We are looking forward to holding our WMAR shows at the Barry County Expo Center in Hastings. The arenas are absolutely huge with a very nice campground and lots of room everywhere. Be sure to get your stall reservations in to Tracey Marttila ASAP as I heard stalls were filling up fast. Remember, too, that we have potluck dinners at both of the WMAR shows, so bring along your favorite dish to share. Jackie Wintjen and I are still looking for some volunteers for the June show. We still need a ringmaster, whether it's for one day or both, in gate and out gate help, maybe an announcer apprentice and helper, and just some general helpers over the weekend to set up games, trail, western riding, etc. Please let us know if there's a particular job you excel at and we'll gladly let you show off your talents, even if it's just for a few hours. Just drop us an e-mail and let us know where you can work. The Wal-Mart in Hastings has generously donated a beautiful, big (28 burger capacity!) gas grill to WMAR which we will be raffling off sometime this summer. Watch our website or contact a board member for more info. Wal-Mart is located close to the Barry County Expo Center so please patronize them while at our shows. Don't forget that we have the WMAR Incentive Fund. There are three divisions, Open Halter, Open Judged Performance and Open Gymkhana. A one time payment of $35.00 and a nomination form is all it takes to apply for each division. WMAR points are counted, with the two WMAR sponsored shows giving double points, and at the end of the year all entry money is divided on a dollar amount per point basis and paid out at the year end banquet. You can contact Tami Vickery for application forms and more information. For up to the minute information, be sure to check out our website at www.wmarapp.com You will find lots of WMAR information as well as fun photos from last show season. Pick Up the Pace - Exercises at the Canter Once you feel secure doing the upper body exercises I explained in a prior article, try doing them at the canter. Mix and match to incorporate them into a smooth pattern. This would include head and neck stretches, one-arm backstrokes, shoulder shrugs, and arm-to-the-side. Doing these exercises will help you follow the motion of the horse as you either trot or canter over the pole. Now drop your stirrups and repeat the upper body series at the canter. Remember that I have given you a series of exercises that are all important, so do not get focused on just one part of the body. Work at your own pace, and only go on to more difficult exercises, or those done at a faster gait, when you feel comfortable doing so.
Building a Partnership with Your Horse
DEVELOPING RIDER FORM & BALANCE Part VIII By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824
As we continue our quest to achieve balance through proper rider form, we'll use some additional lower body exercises. To do all these exercises, you will need a consistent, well-schooled horse tacked up with saddle, bridle and leg protection. Practice in a large enclosed area. Use either a Western or English saddle. Think center-square-balanced as you do these exercises very slowly. And remember to breathe! Additional Lower Body Stretches: The purpose of the following exercises is to build lower leg and ankle flexibility. They can be performed at the walk, trot, and some at the canter. For these exercises, the reins should be organized and in one hand. Do not tie them around the saddle horn. Upper Thigh and Ankle Flex This exercise can be done standing still or at the walk. Start with the right leg. Taking the right foot out of the stirrup, flex the knee and bring the foot up and behind you to the back of the saddle's cantle. Grasp the back of the ankle with your right hand as you keep the foot flexed. Hold this stretch for 5-10 seconds and breathe! Keep the knee on the saddle and stretch the upper leg down. Then release the ankle and allow the lower leg to stretch back down
toward the stirrup. Do the same with the other leg. This is a great exercise for stretching the thigh muscles and improving ankle flexibility. Ankle Circles Riding without stirrups is always a good way to improve flexibility and balance. With the horse at the walk or trot, rotate both ankles in a circular motion inward toward the horse. Repeat, but rotate outward. Do several sets of rotations.
My book, Head to Toe Horsemanship is an excellent resource for improving your balance. The video series “Exercises for Equestrians, Parts 1-3” is also a good resource. Part 1, “Basics—Balance and R e l a x a t i o n , ” Pa r t 2 , “Stretching Ahead,” and Part 3, “Accelerated Flexibility,” give you a total of 90 different exercises for the Western and Hunt Seat rider that can be done at home before and during your riding sessions. You will also find the videos, “Dressage Principles, Vol. 1, Part 1” and “Hunt Seat Equitation, Part 1,” very useful tools to help you improve your riding form and balance. Order these items and other Palm Partnership Training™ resources by visit online at www.lynnpalm.com or by calling 1-800-503-2824.
Toe Points Again, riding without stirrups with the horse at the walk or trot, flex the ankles so that the toes point upwards. Hold for a few seconds. Then flex the ankles so that the toes point toward the ground. Add some variety by practicing picking up your stirrups by just flexing the ankles inward without letting the lower leg move. Drop your fee from the stirrups and start again. Mix and Match Be creative as you do all of the exercises I have given you. Mix and match them to develop your own personal warm-up and flexibility routine. Try placing one pole on the ground where you will be working. Practice doing one or several exercises as your horse walks or trots over the pole.

20 SIZZLING TIPS FOR HOT-WEATHER TRAILERING
windows and roof vents and turn on fans to help cool the trailer," advises Tom Scheve, co-author with his wife, Neva, of The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer and CEO and owner of EquiInternational Inc. (EquiSpirit Trailer Company). "You can install oscillating fans on the same circuit as the interior lights with a remote switch to activate them." 9. Make modifications, if needed, by having windows and screens installed by a fabrication company or a body shop. Suggests Scheve, "Remove head dividers (if they're not needed) and lower center dividers to improve airflow. For trailers without screens on the doors, put fly masks on the horses to protect their eyes." 10. Make sure your trailer's tires are fully inflated, Scheve says. "In hot weather, fully inflated tires flex less, therefore ride cooler, keeping them less likely to blow on hot roads." 11. Put down two rubber mats where the horse stands. "Two mats really help keep the heat off the horse's legs," notes Stull. 12. Leave the horse's head unrestricted and don't put him in cross-ties. "Studies at UC Davis found that crosstied horses were more likely to suffer from dehydration and immune system dysfunction, during and after travel, than horses moved in box stalls without head restraint," says Stull. 13. Install a thermometer or two inside the trailer (and check them every three or four hours while on the road). 14. Carry ample drinking water for your horse while en route. 15. Load everything else
By Marcia King, Green Grass Syndicated Features The long road beckons: It's summer, and all kinds of diverse opportunities await you and your horse--shows, competitions, sales, trail riding, equine vacations, and more. Some events are just a couple of hours away, while others involve many hours, perhaps even a few days, of trailering. Should your journey take you and your equine traveling companions through areas of scorching heat or sweltering humidity, you need to take steps to protect your charges from the oven-like temperatures and stresses that can occur in a horse trailer. Here's how. Horse Prep 1. Decrease the risk of stress-related immune problems by supplementing with vitamins C and E, both of which are antioxidants, suggests Carey A. Williams, PhD (equine nutrition), equine extension specialist at R u t g e r s U n i v e r s i t y. "Administer 1,000 to 3,000 IU per day of vitamin E three weeks prior to hauling, as it takes that long to build up enough of a store to become additionally effective, or throughout the show season if you haul often. Give about 7-10 grams of vitamin C daily for a day or two before hauling and for three to four days after hauling." 2. Use caution if providing electrolytes to address excess sweating during the trip or to encourage more drinking of w a t e r. " W h e n u s i n g electrolytes, make sure to provide water every couple of hours," Williams says. "You could actually increase the severity of dehydration if you provide electrolytes, but not
enough water, or if your horse doesn't drink while on a trailer. If your horse doesn't drink while trailering, discontinue electrolyte use until the horse is rested overnight or safely at its destination." 3. Teach your horse to load and unload calmly, says Carolyn Stull, PhD (animal science), extension specialist in the Animal Welfare P r o g r a m / Ve t e r i n a r y Medicine Extension at the University of California, Davis. A horse that's already stressed out from loading is more susceptible to the stresses of heat and travel, reports Stull, who has studied the physiological responses of horses to transportation. 4. If possible, transport horses only when they are in good health. Stull warns, "Transport stresses compromise the immune system of sick horses." This is true for horses of all ages. 5. Check and record your horse's resting vital signs before departure to use as a comparison, if needed, while en route. 6. If possible, acclimate your horses to trailering and see how they react to trailering by trying shorter trips in hot weather before embarking on a longer trip, advises Randy Lewis, Featherlite national sales manager. 7. Skip the sheet or lightweight blanket. "They can help keep the horse clean and dust-free," Stull says, "but sheets and blankets also compromise the horse's ability to dissipate heat.” Trailer Prep 8. Ventilate the trailer. "Prior to loading, open all

first, horses last, and depart immediately after loading in order to avoid heat buildup in the trailer, Scheve states. En Route 16. Drive at night or during the cooler parts of the day when the sun isn't adding extra heat and discomfort to the horses, suggests Lewis. 17. Periodically stop and check your horse's demeanor and vital signs--a pinch test for dehydration, capillary refill time, pulse, and temperature. "Keep in mind that horses can be sweating profusely, but dry off quickly because of the ventilation, so it may not be apparent how much they're sweating," warns Scheve. 18. Stop and offer water every four to five hours, as some horses don't drink as much or at all on a moving trailer. 19. Periodically stop and unload your horses. However, make sure you do so in a secure area to avoid loose horses or the chance they might not want to reload. How often depends on individual circumstances, says Stull. "Is the horse acclimated to trailering?" she says. "Is he an athlete or sedentary horse? Is he traveling with other horses that are calm and cool?" 20. Avoid stopping and leaving the horses on the trailer, especially in the sun. "Heat builds up incrementally the longer the duration that you're stopped," warns Stull. "Anytime you can, try to park the trailer in the shade.” Safe Arrival By taking a few precautions and practicing a little common sense, you can help ensure that your horse arrives at his destination in the best shape and health as possible. lead to heat exhaustion and circulatory collapse. In extreme dry heat horses can sweat off so much moisture that they become dehydrated due to loss of fluids and electrolytes. In contrast, a working horse in hot and humid conditions doesn't evaporate much sweat because there's so much water in the air already; consequently, the horse gets no cooling effects from evaporation and continues to sweat, resulting in loss of electrolytes and fluids. Signs of mild heat stress include a temperature above 103ºF and an increased capillary refill time (more than two seconds). Signs of serious heat stress include a temperature of 106ºF or above, elevated heart rate, dehydration, thready pulse, pale or brown-red gums, depression, lack of appetite, and a lack of thirst in spite of dehydration. If your horse appears to be suffering from mild heat stress: • Move him to a shady, wellventilated spot. • Cool him off by sponging or hosing him, particularly on the undersides, the limbs, and the neck, with lots of cool or cold water. • Walk him for a few minutes (this helps move the heat away from the muscles). • Cool him off again with water. If your horse appears to show signs of serious heat stress, immediately contact a veterinarian, then apply the above cooling techniques while waiting for the veterinarian's arrival.

BUYING A COOL TRAILER If you're shopping for a new or used trailer, investigate the trailer's ability to maintain cool temperatures. "Consider the size of the windows and the amount of light and air entering the trailer," suggests Lewis. Look for large feed door windows, which allow maximum airflow, and ceiling roof vents positioned down the center of the trailer, which draw air more efficiently into the trailer. (Vents can also be installed aftermarket.) Tom Scheve says large windows, tubular dividers, no lower dividers, and vents for each horse contribute to good ventilation. He states that straight-load trailers permit better airflow than slant style trailers, while manger style trailers get hotter in the head area (because of the small enclosed area for the horse's head) than styles that have an open area. Avoid single walls and dark ex t e r i o r c o l o r s , w h i c h contribute to increased heat. Explains Scheve, "Single walls get as hot on the inside as they do on the outside." (In contrast, dual-insulated walls stay as much as 10 degrees cooler on the inside as on the outside.) "Dark colors such as black, red, dark green, and dark blue will absorb the heat, whereas light colors will reflect it." Finally, Scheve suggests taking a test ride by riding in the trailer yourself to assess problems, including how well the trailer is ventilated, how well air flows through the trailer, and how quickly heat builds up. HEAT STRESS Heat stress is the response of the horse's body to increased dehydration, high heat, and electrolyte loss. If unaddressed, heat stress can

scratches or rain rot on the lower legs. It was a combination of furazone, penicillin and gentocin - very broad-spectrum. The horse may start out with just the rain rot bacteria but is then predisposed to getting secondary bacterial infections. Thus we use a broad-spectrum ointment to make sure we cover everything that might be there,” she says. “Another treatment that works is a product called White Lightning (containing chlorine dioxide), which is also used for treating thrush and white line disease in the hoof. We've found that it works well for scratches or rain rot and is not abrasive. It has a nice ability to permeate the area and get in under the crusts. When you use it and squeeze it out of the container, it creates a chemical reaction that produces a gas that allows it to penetrate better. It is antibacterial and anti-fungal,” she says. It's also important to keep the horse in a clean, dry environment. “If the horse is outside, standing in muck up to the fetlocks, you need to put him in a clean, dry stall until you get the rain rot or scratches cleared up. If the crusts are along the back and withers, which we often see in wet weather, you need to clean it up the same—to allow air to get to it. I don't use ointments when it's up on the back, because they tend to hold moisture. The important thing is to clean the skin (and use the betadine or chlorhexadine) and dry it,” she says. “I've seen some cases get so bad that they result in a cellulitis that goes up the leg. Bacteria under the skin cause swelling and pain and the horse usually goes lame on that leg. In that case you'll
RAIN ROT IN HORSES By Heather Smith Thomas Rain rot, also known as rain scald, mud fever, dew poisoning, dermatophilosis and cutaneous actinomycosis, is an infection of the skin caused by a bacterial pathogen called Dermatophilus congolensis. These bacteria are often present on healthy animals and generally cause problems only when conditions are favorable for infection. Jenny Wilkinson, DVM (Equine Science Lecturer in the Animal Science Department at the University of Vermont) says horse owners need to know that this infection is contagious. “People originally thought it was caused by a fungus that lived in the soil. Research has now shown that it is caused by bacteria that live on the skin. Horses may carry it and never develop a problem with rain rot, but other horses they come into contact with might be susceptible to the infection. We're not sure why some horses get rain rot and others (in the same environmental conditions) do not, but it may have something to do with the immune system,” says Wilkinson. “We usually see it flare up when we get a lot of rain, or during mud season here in Vermont. If horses are living in pastures where there's a lot of mud, this puts their lower legs in constant contact with moisture. We see a lot of rain rot infections in the back of the pastern, especially when horses are in a wet, dirty environment,” she says. In these instances the infection could easily be confused with scratches, on the lower legs. “It can be difficult to
differentiate between the two types of infections. The only way you would know for sure would be to do a skin scraping and look at it under a microscope. Then you would be able to actually see the bacteria. Dermatophilus congolensis has a very distinct appearance when you look at the skin scraping under a microscope, and this could help you figure it out. If you have a good sample and the correct staining, you can actually see the bacteria themselves; they line up next to one another and form a pattern that looks like railroad tracks,” she explains. To treat rain rot, she likes to first clip the hair off the affected area, which exposes the bacteria to air and helps the area dry out faster. Long hair tends to hold the moisture there, next to the skin. Most veterinarians recommend picking off the scabs and crusts that form when the horse has rain rot. Some horses are ver y sensitive when you start pulling those off, and sometimes a horse needs to be sedated for the clipping and picking off the scabs. “If you can get the hair away and get the scabs off—so air can get to the infection—treatment will be more affective. I usually use betadine or chlorhexadine (Nolvasan) since these are both good topical antibacterials. I clean the area with one of these and then make sure the area is dried well, afterward,” says Wilkinson. “The practice where I used to work made something called a scratches paste, and it worked nicely for both

need to give the horse systemic antibiotics. Rain rot by itself won't make the leg that sore,” says Wilkinson. If the horse needs systemic antibiotics she usually recommends using TMS tablets (trimethoprim sulfa), given orally. “That drug is usually the first choice, and then if that drug doesn't work, we'd switch to injectables such as a combination of IM penicillin and IV genticyn. If that doesn't work, we'll go to a stronger IV medication. Most rain rot cases can be treated locally, without needing systemic antibiotics, especially if you catch it early,” she says. Preventative measures include paying attention to the skin and hair coat, grooming horses on a regular basis during wet seasons to make sure they are not developing a problem. “If they get muddy, bring them in and wash their legs periodically and dry them really well, to keep them as free of mud as you can. In a rainy climate, a roof or run-in shed where they can get out of the rain will help. You can also blanket the horse, as long as you are putting the blanket on a clean, dry horse. Even a light rain sheet (when it's not actually very cold outside) to keep them dry can be beneficial, especially in the fall when horses are starting to grow their winter coats.” The long hair tends to trap moisture next to the skin and takes longer to dry out. Basic good husbandry practices are helpful — grooming the horse, looking at feet and legs, looking at the back of their pasterns, addressing any problems early, can save a lot of time, effort and medical expense in the long run. “If a horse gets a lot of scabs and you have to pick them off, it's not much fun for you or the horse.” WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

DEALING WITH COLIC, Part II
veterinarian if there are specific things you can do to decrease the chance of colic,” says Plummer. “For example, a feed or housing change.” 32. DO consider gastric-ulcer preventions for highly stressed horses, per veterinary instructions, says Keenan. “Make sure these horses get endoscopic exams, as ulcers are a common cause of mild colic.” PENNY WISE, POUND FOOLISH Colic can often be easily resolved, but too often, it can be the end of your horse's life. Don't be misled by mild signs and conclude it's a do-ityourself solution: While that could be the case, the price of a phone consultation with your veterinarian is much less costly and painful than dealing with a worsening surgical situation or the angst of a euthanasia that might not have occurred if you'd acted sooner. Sydney Durieux's quick decision to have Rufus examined paid off: “He came back faster and fitter than ever and continues to do well!” COLIC RE-CAP The term “colic” actually refers to abdominal pain rather than a specific disorder. Conditions which most commonly cause colic include gas, impaction, grain overload, sand ingestion, and parasite infection. “Any horse has the ability to experience colic,” states Michael N. Fugaro, VMD, DACVS. “The disorder is indiscriminant of age, sex, breed, occupation, or environment. That said, it is the older horses that concern us the most with respect to frequency and severity.” Diagnosis, says Amy Plummer, DVM, DACVS, is generally based on physical exam (intestinal sounds, mucous membrane color, temperature, pulse, respiration rates, rectal palpation), abdominocentesis (removal of abdominal fluid
By Marcia King, Green Grass Features Continued from pages 3233 in the May 2010 Saddle Up! Magazine... RISK REDUCTION 22. DO maintain a consistent feeding protocol and introduce feed changes g r a d u a l l y. “ T h e m o s t common association with colic is a change in feed or hay batch within the prior two weeks,” says Keenan. When switching to a new food source, try to do so gradually over at least 10 days. 23. DO feed frequently. Says Plummer, “Multiple smaller meals are generally better for the digestive tract than one or two large meals.” 24. DO forego grain over forage. “Horses' intestinal tracts are not made to digest grain,” Keenan points out. In fact, high grain diets are linked to increased colic as well as increased founder, obesity, and other disorders. “The only horses that need grain are those that lose weight despite being fed good quality hay 24/7 or those that are in a very demanding exercise schedule.” 25. DO encourage drinking to reduce risk of impaction colic. Provide access to warm water in the winter, cool water in the summer. Tempt horses that routinely don't drink much by mixing ample amounts of water into grain, gradually increasing the water:grain ratio. “You can slowly increase the water to the point where the horse will drink a whole bucket of water to get to a half pound of grain,” says Keenan. “Do that twice a day and you've got them drinking two buckets of water a day.” Take care not to allow the grain to ferment. 26. DO provide regular exercise. “Keeping an exercise routine consistent is beneficial,” notes Plummer. Avoid weekend war rior activities or intense bouts of
exercise followed by long periods without exercise. 27. DO maintain an approved deworming schedule. “Routine parasite control is very important for a healthy intestinal tract,” P l u m m e r s a y s . “ Yo u r veterinarian can determine an appropriate program based on the pasture and age of your horse.” Strategic parasite control is usually the best option, in order to prevent parasite resistance to deworming agents. 28. DO take steps to reduce ingestion of sand. Keep hay rations off of sandy surfaces by placing rations in a manger, cut-down garbage can or rain barrel, or on a cement pad or rubber mat swept clean of sand. If your horse likes to pull his hay out of the container and eat it off the ground, lay mats around the container. 29. DO check stool samples of horses prone to sand colic. “Put about two cups of manure in a gallon zip-bag, fill the bag with water, close the bag tightly, then shake it up until all of the manure is dissolved,” Keenan advises. “Hold the bag by one corner so the opposite corner is hanging lowest. Tap the bag and the sand will settle out in the lower corner. If your horse h a s m o re t h a n h a l f a teaspoon, he's positive for sand ingestion. If you get a negative, repeat the test three or four times over a three day period to make sure.” 30. DO administer psyllium (Metamucil) products, according to your veterinarian's instructions, if your horse has a sand burden, suggests Keenan. Keep your horse off of sandy areas (stall him, if necessary) until the problem clears. 31. DO consider management changes if your horse has colicked before. “Ask your

for assessment) and/or nasogastric intubation, abdominal ultrasound and sometimes abdominal radiographs, blood tests, and sampling of the abdominal fluid. With appropriate and timely treatment, the prognosis for medical colics is generally very good to excellent and for surgical colics is good to excellent. TREATING COLIC Ninety percent of all colics can be managed medically, reports James Carmalt, MA, VetMB, MVetSc, MRCVS, DABVP, DACVS. Medical management usually consists of pain medications, anti-inflammatories and, if needed, intravenous fluids, promotility medications, antispasmotics or antibiotics, says A m y P l u m m e r, D V M , DACVS. “The veterinarian may also recommend specific dietar y restrictions or management changes.” Surgical treatment begins with a manual and/or visual examination of the gut, Carmalt explains. Depending on the findings, the surgeon will empty the impaction, reposition the mal-positioned or twisted bowel, and/or remove compromised bowel tissue and reattach the living ends. Although post-operative complications are numerous, the majority are not lifethreatening. THE COST OF COLIC “It's quite variable, but colic surgeries can range anywhere from $5000 - $20,000 depending on the region where the surgery is being performed and the complexity of the surgery,” says Michael N. Fugaro, VMD, DACVS. “Even a medical colic involving going into the clinic and being on IV fluids for a couple of days can easily cost $5000.” This article is not intended as medical advice.
