Congratulations 2015 Catalyst Award Winners

Billy Crego is a fixture with the MI Draft Horse Breeders Association. His start in the Draft horse world was as a groom for “Doc” Bramer at the old Lansing Dairy Co. for nine years. Later he spent 33 years with Heatherwood/McDonald Dairy delivering milk. He also bought the last pair of Percheron Mares Lansing Dairy had. But it is not just driving that has Billy hooked. He also rode with the Clinton County Sheriff's Posse for 45 years. Billy was the driving force behind the creation of the Michigan Great Lakes International Draft Horse Show and Pulls, the only event of its kind in the world. He also was instrumental in moving the show from the old State Fairgrounds in Detroit to its present location at the MSU Livestock Pavilion, in East Lansing. Billy was assistant chairman for the MI Great Lakes International for 26 years and ringmaster of the Live Oak Invitational Draft Horse Hitch Show in Ocala, FL as well. Billy was the recipient of the Michigan Draft Horse Breeders Association Service to The Industry Award in 2014. Billy has blessed us with powerful renditions of the National Anthem. Our deepest thanks and appreciation to you, a true equine industry Catalyst.

Dick & Connie Kleinhardt are tireless trail warriors for Michigan equine riders. In 2008, Dick and Connie organized a varied group of equestrians to work with legislators to create the “Right to Ride” Act for Michigan equestrians. At that time, equestrians were represented in trail subcommittees by delegates from nonmotorized organizations. So much changed when Dick and Connie convinced equestrians to become pro-active and unite to voice their needs on the trails and in campgrounds. Since the start back in 2008, there now exists a network of equestrians, legislators and the various branches of the Department of Natural Resources that share ideas, and plan and build together as a team. Thank you so much for all your steadfast perseverance to make Michigan trails and camps “horse friendly”.

He has volunteered to do speaking engagements for 4-H and before you could blink, he was fixing all the ponies with a big smile on his face! Steve is a believer in sedation free care and he has a rapport with his clients, both horse and people, that is easy going and gentle. Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs

AHC’s 2015 Issues Forum & Speakers (Washington, DC) The American Horse Council’s National Issues Forum, sponsored by Luitpold Animal Health, on June 16 in Washington, DC will feature speakers and panels from across the horse industry on “Protecting and Promoting the Horse.” The topic will be addressed by representatives from Federal agencies and various sectors of the horse industry, each discussing what they are doing in these areas. This year’s National Issues Forum will be held on Tuesday, June 16, during the AHC’s annual convention. The convention will run from June 14 to 17 at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill. Gary Woodward, Deputy Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, will kick off the program Tuesday morning. His agency, APHIS, may have the most day-to-day federal interaction with the horse industry of any department of the federal government. He will be joined by USDA staff from APHIS and other departments to explain USDA’s relationship with the horse community and its efforts to protect the health of horses and support the continued viability of the industry. USDA leaders and staff will be present to review the Department’s goals, program direction, allocation of resources, and opportunities for the horse industry. The Forum will also feature presentations on other programs to protect and promote the horse. The Unwanted Horse Coalition, which operates under the umbrella of the AHC, is celebrating its 10th anniversary and will provide an update on its initiatives and those of its members over the last decade to protect unwanted horses, its current activities and future plans. Attendees will also be provided an update on several new and unique efforts to promote horses to the public with a presentation entitled “Promoting the Equine Experience.” ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • JUNE 2015

This panel will include an update by Patti Colbert of PCE Enterprises on “Time to Ride,” the initiative of the American Horse Council’s Marketing Alliance. The Time to Ride Challenge returns in 2015 as a grassroots campaign for the horse community to grow the horse industry while competing for $100,000 in cash and prizes. Ross Peddicord of the Maryland Horse Industry Board will also provide an overview of Maryland’s institution of a statewide network of Horse Discovery Centers as part of the Board’s effort to raise the level of public awareness of Maryland’s equestrian traditions and equine activities. These recently-licensed Horse Discovery Centers welcome people of all ages and experience into their barns to learn about horses in a friendly and knowledgeable environment. Also on this panel will be Anne Sabatino Hardy of Horse Country, Inc. a new nonprofit organization that was formed to promote and arrange tours of Kentucky farms, equine clinics, and local Kentucky attractions. Horse Country hopes to capitalize on its unique location in the “Horse Capital” of the world to promote the story of the horse, from birth, to racing, and back to breeding, to the public in order to attract more fans to racing and the horse. The Forum will also focus on organizations and individuals intent on keeping kids involved in equestrian activities during their years in college when many seemingly fall out of the industry. Without these organizations and programs, the industry could lose more participants. “Going to College” will be a panel that includes Meghan Boenig, equestrian coach at the University of Georgia, representing the National Collegiate Equestrian Association; Patte Zumbrun, Equestrian Director at Goucher College, representing the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association; and Cindy Schonholtz, Director of Industry Outreach for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. All of these organizations promote riding and equestrian sports at colleges, either independently or with the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Each will explain their programs and the problems they sometimes face in promoting horse sports to college kids. (28)

The AHC’s convention will also include the AHC’s Congressional Reception the evening of the Issues Forum, the Congressional RideIn on Wednesday, June 17, and meetings of all AHC committees and the Unwanted Horse Coalition on Monday, June 15, during the AHC’s annual meeting. Complete information on the Forum and the entire AHC annual meeting, including registration and hotel information, can be found on the AHC’s website, http://horse council.org/events.php or by contacting the AHC. Find the AHC on Facebook About the American Horse Council As the national association representing all segments of the horse industry in Washington, D.C., the American Horse Council works daily to represent equine interests and opportunities. The AHC promotes and protects the industry by communicating with Congress, federal agencies, the media and the industry on behalf of all horse related interests each and every day. The AHC is member supported by individuals and organizations representing virtually every facet of the horse world from owners, breeders, veterinarians, farriers, breed registries and horsemen's associations to horse shows, race tracks, rodeos, commercial suppliers and state horse councils.

PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING ™ Building a Partnership with Your Horse, By Lynn Palm

Trailer Tune-Up

Western Dressage: Warm Up Routine A good warm up routine is valuable, whether you are about to school your horse for your latest test in Western Dressage, or are just heading out for a trail ride. Your horse needs a pre-exercise warm-up routine to help loosen and limber up his muscles. A warm-up also prepares the horse’s mind for the work you will be asking him to do--whether it is schooling, trail riding, pleasure riding, or showing. Start the warm-up by letting your horse walk on a loose rein. The warm-up pattern should include very large circles, large turns, and straight lines. The horse should be moving forward, but in a relaxed manner. After warming up at the walk, ask the horse for the trot or jog. The trot is the best gait to limber up the horse. At this point, the rider should not be worried about the horse being “on the bit.” Instead, he should be allowed to move forward on a loose rein with the rider guiding him to stay on the circle, large turn, or the straight line. Spend equal time going in both directions. Change directions often to loosen up both sides and to keep the horse’s interest during the warm-up. Post when trotting/jogging during the warm-up period, whether you are using an English or Western saddle. This gives the rider an opportunity to warm up and to use her own muscles. As the rider begins to loosen up, she will notice that her muscles respond better and her coordination improves while her thinking slows. The rider begins to relax as her warmed-up body allows her to better follow the horse’s movement. As part of the warm-up, the rider may try taking her feet out of the stirrups to get down in the saddle and closer to her horse. As her body loosens up, she will find she is able to follow the horse’s movement and stay in balance even without stirrups. There is no set amount of time for a warm-up routine. Usually, the colder the weather is, the longer and slower the warm-up should be to loosen up cold muscles and joints. It must be long enough to physically and mentally warm up the horse, but it is not intended to wear him out or bore him. Enough time should be spent in the warm-up so that both sides of the horse are equally loosened up. A good gauge for the rider is that she should feel the same balance and relaxation without stirrups as she feels with them. She also should feel her mind slow down and focus, and she should feel positive about the upcoming riding session. Once this has been achieved, it’s time to proceed from warm up to the actual lesson, training period, or pleasure ride. We would love to have you come ride with us. We love to share our dressage background and knowledge with you. You can join us at our Ocala, Florida farm or at one of our Ride Well Clinics on our USA Tour at a location near you. GREAT LAKES DISTANCE RIDING ASSOCIATION Thoughts from the October 2014 Oak Leaf Run Ride – by Amy Scharmen We are on the final loop of our third 50 mile endurance ride. Indy, my morab, and I have ridden most of the miles alone this day. I was looking forward to the early morning sun shining through the gold fall oak leaves at Silver Creek and indeed, Mother Nature did not disappoint. An absolutely perfect day winding through the woods, we have come close to camp only to turn out yet again with Indy acknowledging every time how near camp is. The wind has picked up on this fourth loop, just a touch, so only the leaves at the tree tops are blowing and the loosened acorns fall around us. I use the time on our magical ride to reflect on how much I appreciate every hoof beat with my Pegasus pony Indiana Jones. This is another year and another ride closer to our goal of AERC decade team. And I am so very grateful. GLDRA offers rides that are 10-75 miles in length complete with veterinary supervision. All of our rides offer both Endurance/Limited Distance and Competitive Trail options except for the first ride of the season held at Brighton Recreation Area which is a Competitive Trail Ride only. We also have ready and willing mentors all over Michigan waiting for your questions. Our ride season has started and continues on with two rides in June. June 13-14 is the White River Summer ride in Hesperia, MI where you will experience the Manistee National Forest in the beauty and warmth of summer. Rides of 15, 25, 30, 35, & 50 miles are offered. And next up is the wonderful Hopkins Creek ride in Manton, MI, June 2728, which is held around the southern spur of the Shore to Shore trail. You will choose from distances of 10, 25, 40, and 50 miles, the 10 mile fun ride offered both Saturday and Sunday is a great way to dip your toes into distance riding. The next weekend, July 18-19, head to Limestone, MI, and ride the incredibly scenic northern section of the Grand Island trail in the Hiawatha National Forest on our Grand Island North ride. Rides of 30 and 55 miles are available. The GLDRA ride season has rides all over Michigan, from Marquette to Battle Creek. Great Lakes Distance Riding Association is dedicated to the education and promotion of participation in equestrian competitive distance riding events throughout the state of Michigan.

Finally we will be working to re-route the trails in the wet areas that become impassable in the wet seasons. We are entering the camping season and would like to encourage everyone to visit our rustic campground. DNR feels we do not have enough horsemen using the campground to warrant having an equestrian only campground. We would like to prove them wrong. Michiganders are lucky to have so many beautiful parks with equine camping and trails. Be sure to take advantage all of the equine activities our great state has to offer. See you on the trails.

asked, How can we help? Or what can we do? Most always, we have answered with “We'll let you know” or we got it and we getr-done. I revel in the feedback that you give on our events and on how well the trails are maintained here. We have, on occasion, asked for your help. Every time we ask, you come a runnin!! With that being said, Sunday May 3rd was a prime example. We asked you to come enjoy the trails and donate to our/your permanent pavilion in the staging area. You responded with arms wide open (and checkbooks) to support us. It's the response like this that lets me know that you support us and care like no other organization could. On that Sunday, there were trailers everywhere. There were members that came to support us that didn't know why they were even there! All of you came because we needed you. There were people that don't have horses anymore that supported our cause. There were nonmembers that sent checks, friends of friends that sent checks! We called, you answered! Was I impressed? Why HELL YES! Was I confident that we would have a tremendous turnout? Why HELL YES again! We have the BEST members and friends! I want to apologize to the ones I didn't get to talk to because we were so busy! The reason why I'm sending this out to you is twofold. Number one, I want you all to know how proud I am to be the treasurer and a member of this club. The second, way more important reason is to tell you how much we/you have raised! Drum roll please…over $6,000.00 was raised for this project! Your donations just didn't raise the roof, they went through the roof! Thank you all for your support. We are also thrilled to let you know that Kim Veenstra and the Mobile Confidence Course event at the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area May 16th, raised $3,281.00 to help Nicki Chandler with medical expenses. Kim Veenstra donated 100% of her workshop fees that day to help Nicki. It is just so exciting to see the support that poured out for Nicki and the incredible enthusiasm from both participants and volunteers. Thank you all for your incredible support! Beginners Guide To Sewing Show Clothes PATTERNS Before you choose your fabric, choose your pattern. Although some brand name pattern companies offer equestrian wear in their “costume” or “historical” category, it is not designed to allow for the extra movement required by equestrian activity. Have you ever ripped a shirt by just reaching up to the saddle horn to mount your horse? As long as you keep this in mind, you will be ok with these patterns if you allow a little extra “give” through the shoulders or use a fabric with some built in stretch. There are several equestrian wear pattern companies. The more familiar brands are: SuitAbility ™, Jean Hardy ™, Lola Gentry ™. Tandy Leather Co.™ also has some patterns for chaps, vests, etc. Some of these patterns are available through your local tack store. All of them are accessible through the internet and offer a wide range of patterns. Many of the patterns are multi-sized. This means that there are several size ranges of patterns within that envelope. The original idea of creating multi-sized patterns was to allow you to blend sizes for a perfect fit. Savvy sewers have learned that if you purchase a multi-sized pattern, you can trace the size you need onto tracing paper and thus use the same pattern for a variety of people and/or for the same person as they grow or change shape. You can purchase tracing fabric from most fabric stores. It is somewhat transparent and has grids printed on it to help you keep the “grain lines” straight. It is found in the same section as interfacings. Non-fusible interfacing also makes a good “fabric” or “paper” for tracing you pattern onto. Choose the product for this that you like the best. Remember, you are the one using it. Use what makes you happiest or you feel does the job the best. Remember to choose a pattern that conforms to your breed or association regulations. You need to know whether your association allows zip front shirts, or whether they must be real button down style; whether collars need to be a certain style and whether you must have cuffs. FABRIC BUYING TIP - If you are short on cash to purchase your fabric, sell something (or ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • JUNE 2015

several things) online first. Reserve that money in your Paypal™ or Google™ account. Then, when you purchase your fabric, use the cash from that account. No money out of your pocket or on your credit card! ONLINE FABRIC RESOURCES If you use a search engine, type in the same types of key words suggested for the online auctions. This will bring up a listing of hundreds of places that sell fabric. It is up to you to visit the websites and determine if the fabric is what you are looking for. Also be sure to check the price per yard, minimum order quantity and shipping charges. Here again the shipping charges could out weigh the reasonable rates that you paid for the fabric. In this search, you will find some suppliers who only sell to licensed retailers. As an individual, you do not qualify to purchase from this supplier. Just move on to the next name on your list. Some suppliers will have a ten (or more) yard minimum purchase. You will need to determine whether you want to purchase that much fabric when you only need one or two yards. What will you do with the excess fabric? Yes, you could list it on an on line auction but there is no guarantee that you will recover your expenses. Be aware of the price per yard cost. Although there are websites where you can purchase $8 - $10 per yard fabric, there are also places that charge $25 or more per yard. You must determine whether the fabric that you choose is worth the price being charged. It is your budget and it is your decision. LOCAL FABRIC STORES Remember that there are wonderful retail stores that you can walk into and see and feel the fabric that you are selecting. There are national chains such as JoAnn's™ and Hancock Fabrics™ who also offer discount coupons. But, there are also local, individually owned stores as well as other general and craft stores that offer fabric for sale. Field's Fabrics and Haberman's, both located in Michigan, are examples of non-franchised stores. General merchandise and craft stores such as Wal-Mart™, Hobby Lobby™, and Michaels™, to name a few, are other sources of economical fabric. In order to find “real” stores, it is as simple as looking in your telephone directory under (52)

Fabric, Material, etc. For those more comfortable with a computer, you can access the web and do a search such as Fabric Stores in Michigan, or Fabric Retailers. Regardless of how you find your store, it may be worth your time to call ahead and be sure that they carry the type of fabric that you desire. The listings are not always accurate, so I really do recommend the telephone call in advance of your driving to the store. When you go into the store, you will want to look for Lycra™ in the swim wear section. Sometimes the area might be labeled skate, dance, or even athletic fabric. I have even seen it in the costume section. The stores consider Lycra™ a seasonal fabric. It might even be in the discount section of the store. Selecting cottons, gabardines, and twills is much easier. They usually have their own section of the store all year around. Just ask the clerk to help you find it. The national chain stores are potentially a great place to find economical fabric. If you make a habit of checking their discount fabric section, you may find something there. Be warned, you may search many times and find nothing that you desire. But when you do find a good deal, it is usually a GREAT deal. There is one problem with purchasing your fabric from chain stores. You do run the risk of meeting another show person who has purchased the same fabric and created a shirt or outfit exactly like you have created. The odds of this happening are slim but it has been known to happen. More to follow in the next edition of Saddle Up! Magazine. An excerpt from the book:

on the horses to protect their eyes.” 10. Make sure your trailer's tires are fully inflated, Scheve says. "In hot weather, fully inflated tires flex less, therefore ride cooler, keeping them less likely to blow on hot roads.” 11. Put down two rubber mats where the horse stands. "Two mats really help keep the heat off the horse's legs," notes Stull. 12. Leave the horse's head unrestricted and don't put him in cross-ties. "Studies at UC Davis found that cross-tied horses were more likely to suffer from dehydration and immune system dysfunction, during and after travel, than horses moved in box stalls without head restraint," says Stull.

20 SIZZLING TIPS FOR HOT WEATHER TRAILERING By Marcia King, Green Grass Syndicated Features The long road beckons: It's summer, and all kinds of diverse opportunities await you and your horse shows, competitions, sales, trail riding, equine vacations, and more. Some events are just a couple of hours away, while others involve many hours, perhaps even a few days, of trailering. Should your journey take you and your equine traveling companions through areas of scorching heat or sweltering humidity, you need to take steps to protect your charges from the oven-like temperatures and stresses that can occur in a horse trailer. Here's how. Horse Prep 1. Decrease the risk of stress-related immune problems by supplementing with vitamins C and E, both of which are antioxidants, suggests Carey A. Williams, PhD (equine nutrition), equine extension specialist at Rutgers University. "Administer 1,000 to 3,000 IU per day of vitamin E three weeks prior to hauling, as it takes that long to build up enough of a store to become additionally effective, or throughout the show season if you haul often. Give about 7-10 grams of vitamin C daily for a day or two before hauling and for three to four days after hauling." 2. Use caution if providing electrolytes to address excess sweating during the trip or to encourage more drinking of water. "When using electrolytes, make sure to provide water every couple of hours," Williams says. "You could actually increase the severity of dehydration if you provide electrolytes, but not enough water, or if your horse doesn't drink while on a trailer. If your horse doesn't drink while trailering, discontinue electrolyte use until the horse is rested overnight or safely at its destination." 3. Teach your horse to load and unload calmly, says Carolyn Stull, PhD (animal science), extension specialist in the Animal Welfare Program/Veterinary Medicine Extension at the University of California, Davis. A horse that's already stressed out from loading is more susceptible to the stresses of heat and travel, reports Stull, who has studied the physiological responses of horses to transportation. ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • JUNE 2015

4. If possible, transport horses only when they're in good health. Stull warns, "Transport stresses compromise the immune system of sick horses." This is true for horses of all ages. 5. Check and record your horse's resting vital signs before departure to use as a comparison, if needed, while en route. 6. If possible, acclimate your horses to trailering and see how they react to trailering by trying shorter trips in hot weather before embarking on a longer trip, advises Randy Lewis, Featherlite national sales manager. 7. Skip the sheet or lightweight blanket. "They can help keep the horse clean and dust-free," Stull says, "but sheets and blankets also compromise the horse's ability to dissipate heat." Trailer Prep 8. Ventilate the trailer. "Prior to loading, open all windows and roof vents and turn on fans to help cool the trailer," advises Tom Scheve, co-author with his wife, Neva, of The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer and CEO/owner of EquiInternational Inc. (EquiSpirit Trailer Company). "You can install oscillating fans on the same circuit as the interior lights with a remote switch to activate them." 9. Make modifications, if needed, by having windows and screens installed by a fabrication company or a body shop. Suggests Scheve, "Remove head dividers (if they're not needed) and lower center dividers to improve airflow. For trailers without screens on the doors, put fly masks (56)

BUYING A COOL TRAILER If you're shopping for a new or used trailer, investigate the trailer’s ability to maintain cool temperatures. "Consider the size of the windows and the amount of light and air entering the trailer," suggests Randy Lewis, Featherlite national sales manager. Look for large feed door windows, which allow maximum airflow, and ceiling roof vents positioned down the center of the trailer, which draw air more efficiently into the trailer (vents can also be installed aftermarket). Tom Scheve, CEO/owner of EquiInternational Inc. (EquiSpirit Trailer Co.), says large windows, tubular dividers, no lower dividers, and vents for each horse contribute to good ventilation. He states that straight-load trailers permit better airflow than slant style trailers, while manger style trailers get hotter in the head area (because of the small enclosed area for the horse’s head) than styles that have an open area. Avoid single walls and dark exterior colors, which contribute to increased heat. Explains Scheve, "Single walls get as hot on the inside as they do on the outside." In contrast, dual-insulated walls stay as much as 10 degrees cooler on the inside as on the outside. "Dark colors such as black, red, dark green, and dark blue will absorb the heat, whereas light colors will reflect it." Finally, Scheve suggests taking a test ride by riding in the trailer yourself to assess problems, including how well the trailer is ventilated, how well air flows through the trailer, and how quickly heat builds up. HOT WEATHER TRAILERING, cont. 13. Install a thermometer or two inside the trailer (and check them every three or four hours while on the road). 14. Carry ample drinking water for your horse while en route. 15. Load everything else first, horses last, and depart immediately after loading in order to avoid heat buildup in the trailer, Scheve states. En Route 16. Drive at night or during the cooler parts of the day when the sun isn't adding extra heat and discomfort to the horses, suggests Lewis. 17. Periodically stop and check your horse's demeanor and vital signs--a pinch test for dehydration, capillary refill time, pulse, and temperature. "Keep in mind that horses can be sweating profusely, but dry off quickly because of the ventilation, so it may not be apparent how much they're sweating," warns Scheve. 18. Stop and offer water every four to five hours, as some horses don't drink as much or at all on a moving trailer. 19. Periodically stop and unload your horses. However make sure you do so in a secure area to avoid loose horses or the chance they might not want to reload. How often depends on individual circumstances, says Stull. "Is the horse acclimated to trailering?" she says. "Is he an athlete or sedentary horse? Is he traveling with other horses that are calm and cool?" 20. Avoid stopping and leaving the horses on the trailer, especially in the sun. "Heat builds up incrementally the longer the duration that you're stopped," warns Stull.

"Anytime you can, try to park the in the shade." Safe Arrival By taking a few precautions and practicing a little common sense, you can help ensure that your horse arrives at his destination in the best shape and health as possible. Marcia King is an award-winning author and former Horse Illustrated columnist who writes extensively for equine, pet, and veterinary publications.

HEAT STRESS Heat stress is the response of the horse's body to increased dehydration, high heat, and electrolyte loss. If unaddressed, heat stress can lead to heat exhaustion and circulatory collapse. In extreme dry heat horses can sweat off so much moisture that they become dehydrated due to loss of fluids and electrolytes. In contrast, a working horse in hot and humid conditions doesn't evaporate much sweat because there's so much water in the air already; consequently, the horse gets no cooling effects from evaporation and continues to sweat, resulting in loss of electrolytes and fluids. Signs of mild heat stress include a temperature above 103ºF and an increased capillary refill time (more than two seconds). Signs of serious heat stress include a temperature of 106ºF or above, elevated heart rate, dehydration, thready pulse, pale or brown-red gums, depression, lack of appetite, and a lack of thirst in spite of dehydration. If your horse appears to be suffering from mild heat stress: • Move him to a shady, well-ventilated spot. • Cool him off by sponging or hosing him, particularly on the undersides, the limbs, and the neck, with lots of cool or cold water. • Walk him for a few minutes (this helps move the heat away from the muscles). • Cool him off again with water. If your horse appears to shows signs of serious heat stress, immediately contact a veterinarian, then apply the above cooling techniques while waiting for the veterinarian's arrival.

SHOULD YOU KEEP A HORSE ALONE?

horse that will share chores with you or offset your costs. A miniature horse is perfect, since they don’t eat much. A miniature donkey can fill the bill as well. There are lots of options to fill the horse’s need to live in a herd and deciding what is right for you and your horse may be challenging. If all else fails, get a goat, a duck or a pig. I’ve even seen horses bond with barn cats, but a similar species is best. Goats have long been used as companion animals for race horses that are kept in stalls. To help keep the race horse calm in his isolated stall, you give him a goat for a roommate. The term, “Get your goat,” refers to the nasty trick of stealing your opponent’s goat the night before the big match race, thus leaving the horse frantically pacing all night and exhausted on the day of the race. The biggest downside to horses living in the herd is their undying mission to stay with the herd. This is an instinctive behavior of horses, but highly inconvenient and sometimes downright irritating to us humans. Barn sour, herd-bound, tantrum throwing, nappy horses are a drag. Fortunately, not all horses are that bad. To me, the ultimate honor my horse can bestow on me, comes with his willingness to leave the herd with me - happily and voluntarily. To do as I ask, take me where I want to go and respond to my signals, because I give him the same sense of safety and security he gets from the herd. To get that kind of relationship with your horse, you must give him fair and strong leadership, give him the comfort, the structure, the praise and the discipline he deserves. Once again, horses make us better people. But in his free time, let him be with other horses as much as you can. As much as I want my horses to look up to me and work hard for me, I know I can never replace the contentment he gets from being a part of the herd.
