She will teach you how to use gentle, hands-on movements of the SENSE Method to release horses’ muscular tension and improve suppleness, balance, coordination and freedom of movement. These changes can promote long-term soundness and reduce anxiety, while creating a more harmonious horse-human relationship. You will also learn how to release your own tension and improve your posture, flexibility and balance. Go to www.sensemethod.com to learn more about Mary and the Feldenkrais method. Cost: $125.00 per day, early registration. (2 or 3 day option available) Bringing a horse is optional, as there will be horses to learn from.

HEC SCHOLARSHIP WINNER The Highland Equestrian Conservancy is pleased to announce Kathryn Zarish of White Lake Township, MI, as the recipient of our $500 scholarship for a graduating student studying preservation of our natural resources, environmental sciences or equine interests. Kathryn will be attending Grand Valley State University and plans to concentrate her studies on a career in Law. She volunteers at Pretty Pony Pastures, a therapeutic riding program in Davisburg, where she teaches children with special needs to ride horses. In her application, Kathryn wrote about her connection with animals and the important lessons her horse, Cruz, has taught her especially the skill of listening. She would like to use her experiences with horses and other animals to advocate for them. “We were impressed with Kathryn's accomplishments and volunteerism,” said Amanda Poxon, Secretary of the HEC. “We wish her much success in her studies at Grand Valley.” Pictured: Members of the HEC stand with scholarship recipient, Kathryn Zarish of White Lake and her horse, Cruz. ment of horses. Specifically, no person shall treat any horse in a cruel or inhumane manner. The rules further state that every horse at a ShoMe Horse Shows event shall, at all times, be treated humanely and with dignity, respect, and compassion. Abuse is defined as an action, or failure to act, which a reasonable, prudent person, informed and experienced in the customs, accepted training techniques and exhibition procedures, or veterinary standards would determine to be cruel, abusive, inhumane or detrimental to the horse's health. The rule lists some examples of conduct that are considered to be abusive, including tying a horse in a manner as to cause undue discomfort or distress in a stall, trailer, or when longeing or riding and intentional inhumane treatment which results in bleeding. Further, No persons shall exhibit any horse, which appears sullen, dull, lethargic, emaciated, drawn or overly tired. The ShoMe Horse Shows Organization, in an effort to ensure the welfare of our horses, will institute the following penalties for individuals who are found to violate the rules regarding the inhumane treatment of the horse at ShoMe events: 1st Offense- Dismissal from organized event & no return of event fees. 2nd OffenseDismissal from organized event, no return of event fees and 90 day suspension. 3rd OffenseDismissal from organized event, no return of event fees and 1 year suspension from ShoMe events. Commenting on the issue, Event Manager Ericka Utz stated that “for too many years Open Horse Show Organizations have swept under the rug the issue of abusive and inhumane treatment of horses at their events due to lack of breed show sanctioning and appropriate penalties. It is time for open horse show organizers and

Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs NRHA HELPS REIN IN CANCER Rein in Cancer has teamed up with Ron and Corie McRorie, Dave and Bonnie Silva and the National Reining Horse Association for a big fall fundraising event. At the NRHA Futurity Sale in December, Red Roses In Tinseltown, a 2011 filly by Hollywoodstinseltown will be sold, with all proceeds going to Rein In Cancer. Ron McRorie has generously transferred ownership of the filly out of a moneyearning daughter of Colonel San Peppy (x Colonel Freckles) to Rein in Cancer for the fund raiser "I was inspired by Jordan and Taylor Larson's generous hearts during the Rein In Cancer fundraiser at last year's Futurity," Ron McRorie, who has spearheaded the fundraiser said, in reference to the auction of the saddle that Jordan won the 2010 NRHA Futurity in. "I have had family members affected by this dreadful disease - one as young as eight years old. I truly believe that if we are in a place and are able to reach out and help families, we should." Partnering on the project are Dave and Bonnie Silva, who own Hollywoodstinseltown, a standout stallion by the legendary Hollywood Dun It. Bonnie Silva noted, "We thank Ron McRorie for contacting us and presenting us with this opportunity to help Rein in Cancer. It is people like Ron that make you believe people who really do care unselfishly. Thank you Ron for your donation and support of Rein in Cancer." McRorie shared, "Rein In Cancer is a great and wonderful foundation which allows us the opportunity to reach out with a donation such as this. It supports our sport and the great people involved. I hope this can encourage other great things in the future."

Rein In Cancer was founded five years ago, and since that time has raised over $600,000 and endowed the Shirley Bowman Nutrition Center at the Charles and Peggy Stephenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma City. Once the center was endowed, Rein In Cancer founders decided to change directions. "The financial burden is so great," noted Shorty Koger, "that it can take everything a person has to pay for the medical bills. Or worse, they are unable to pay for some medications and procedures not covered by insurance that might make a difference." Co-founder Tracie Anderson said, "Sometimes it's just a matter of figuring out how to pay the power bill or buy horse feed, because the family goes from two incomes to one - or because the insurance does not do enough." Beginning in 2012, members of the NRHA, American Quarter Horse Association, the National Reined Cow Horse Association, and the National Cutting Horse Association who are diagnosed with cancer can receive a onetime donation of $500 from Rein In Cancer. The organization will also create a venue for loved ones of the patient to give a directed donation as well to benefit their friend or relative. Rein In Cancer President Cheryl Cody noted, "We've already helped quite a few patients with this new direction and it's gratifying to see how much this assistance is needed - and the good it does. We so appreciate the contribution of the McRories and the Silvas and this project will raise even more money to directly benefit those who need it the most.” For information on the NRHA visit www.nrha.com, for more on Rein in Cancer, please visit www.reinincancer.com, email info@reinincancer.com or call 580-759-2572. Rein in Cancer is a 501C3, so your donations are tax deductible.

PURINA DONATES TO UHC Purina Makes Feed Contribution and Asks Horse Owners, Retailers to Help (ST. LOUIS, Mo. – May 1, 2012) During the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, Purina Mills, LLC announced its pledge to donate $125,000 in feed to American Horse Council's Unwanted Horse Coalition (UHC). The donation will support A Home for Every Horse, a program dedicated to finding homes for horses in need of adoption or fostering. Purina's goal is to donate a half ton of Purina® Strategy® horse feeds to 400 rescue shelters. Purina® Strategy® horse feeds are a high-performance feed that have provided more than one billion feedings to horses of all ages and lifestyles. A portion of every bag sold will help fuel the contribution, giving horse owners the opportunity to help. A Home for Every Horse was initiated by Equine Network and gives rescue shelters an effective, online method to place horses with loving families interested in adoption or fostering. A Home for Every Horse works under the Unwanted Horse Coalition, an organization that promotes responsible equine ownership and awareness of the options, services and assistance available to guarantee horses receive care and humane support throughout their lives. Through a broad alliance of 30 equine organizations, including the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), Purina and others, a collective effort works to ensure everything possible is done so that no horse becomes unwanted. "The UHC is so honored to be a part of A Home for Every Horse. With so many unwanted horses in our nation, we must really stress the importance of rescuing and adopting,” said Ericka Caslin, director with (23)

Unwanted Horse Coalition. “Not only are there so many talented and wonderful horses waiting for homes, but the adoption of a horse will free up a space for another horse to be rescued and saved." “Helping to find homes for horses in need is an ambitious undertaking, and we at Purina believe it's critical for organizations across the equine industry to come together in a united effort to help address this growing issue,” said Dave Hoogmoed, president of Purina Mills. “With thousands of horses across the country in need of shelter and nutrition, we must increase education and awareness about horse ownership, care, and adoption. This mission is at the core of the Unwanted Horse Coalition and one that Purina ® supports through the partnership of A Home For Every Horse.” For more information on the American Horse Council's Unwanted Horse Coalition, visit www.unwantedhorsecoalition.o rg. BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS May brought us some fine weather and if this continues, we'll have a great summer. Let's hope it doesn't get too hot and muggy. No matter what Mother Nature has in store for us, we're ready for anything at the Brighton Recreation Area. Our staging area is in prime shape, especially with all the improvements that have been made. Our new pavilion has been a big hit, and was well-utilized during a recent competitive trail ride. Thanks to our friends, the DNR crew at Brighton, a gravel base has been added to the shelter and new picnic tables now await anyone who wants to picnic and get a little relief from the sun. The DNR also installed a brand new grill near the shelter and relocated the mounting blocks so there is more room to park rigs. Of course, our electric water pump if fully operational and our welcome station and information board are wellstocked with sign-in sheets and trail maps. By the time this article appears in Saddle Up!, our big spring event will have taken place. As we have reported in previous columns, we are hosting the Ionia Trail Riders and other riding groups for a weekend of organized riding (poker ride), informal rides, campout, a cookout, and a bonfire featuring live music on May 19th and 20th. We hope all the sites in the horseman's camp will be occupied and we expect the day riders' rigs will fill the staging area. These combined events with trail riding guests from other areas of the State offer innumerable benefits. We meet new friends, trade stories, learn about other resources for trail riding, and strengthen the bonds

within our equestrian community. We're happy to report that the Brighton Rec Stable is doing fine. Amy Carlson and her staff are taking care of day-to-day operations and they continue to offer boarding and rental rides for youth and those who are learning about our sport. We're especially happy to report that Christy Wilson is busy organizing a number of events, and these will continue throughout the season. We have a full schedule of BTRA events planned for the summer. To learn more about them, visit our website: www.brightontrailriders.com. Of course, we welcome all trail riders who want to visit Brighton at any time and enjoy our eighteen miles of trails. Park your rig in the staging area (no fee to get in if you have your Recreation Passport), sign in, get a trail map, saddle up, and ride out. ~ Mark Delaney, BTRA Sec.

Forest in Cass County, with a potluck following the ride. Our regular meeting will be June 18 held at Dona Sherman's indoor arena in Hartford, MI. Dona is a well-known, long-time trainer, she trains, rides, shows and judges, and she will be giving us a riding/training demonstration with her current horses. June 16 & 17 is our 2-day training seminar at Steve Lantvit's High View Farm in LaPorte, Indiana. This is the second year that Steve has offered a special training clinic for Equine Ladies members. We do a lot of our riding on his outside Extreme Cowboy course. Jeff Spitzer of Niles gave a reining demonstration at our April meeting. Our May meeting was a very special Campfire C ookout hos t e d b y c lub members Jo Ann Roberts and Wilma Scharnowske of Buchanan. There were 4 campfires going cooking ribs, chili, baked beans and pudgy pies for dessert along with a potluck. For more information about Equine Ladies you can contact President, Sally Forraht at 269473-1730 or Secretary, Judy Poluhanycz 269-461-6323.

EQUINE LADIES We are a twenty-five year old club in the Southwest Michigan area, our purpose is to promote and maintain a non-profit organization where we exchange information regarding horses and promote fellowship with others who enjoy riding and owning horses. Our monthly meetings are a lot of fun, we visit training barns, have talks by veterinarians, blacksmiths, and trainers, etc, we have potlucks and a great Christmas party. Many of our members have made wonderful new friendships thru Equine Ladies. Our meetings are the third Monday of each month except for March and August when no meetings are held. June 9 we will be having a special club trail ride at Russ

Welcome to the June GLASSED newsletter! GLASS-ED had our Spring Clinic with Rozalind Kinstler on April 28th and 29th held at Equine Line in Plainwell, Mi and at Mystic Marsh in Delton, Mi. All of the rider slots were filled both days and there were plenty of people who came to audit. Roz is a great instructor and everyone came away with lots of “homework”. She took questions from the auditors during her breaks so everyone got to participate. It was a fantastic two days and set everyone up for a great start to the show season. By the time this newsletter (26)

comes out, we will have had our first show of the season. This show will include gaited classes. This is something new for the club and we will all enjoy watching the gaited horses perform their tests. GLASS-ED will be offering Part 1, a judge's perspective, of the USDF "L" Educational Program on September 15-16, October 20-21, November 17-18 at Mystic Marsh Farm in Delton, Mi. Part 1 consists of three sessions and provides great information for anyone wanting to learn more about dressage as well as competitors, trainers and prospective judges. In Session A on September 15-16 you will get an introduction to judging and biomechanics. Session B on October 20-21 will cover judging criteria for gaits and paces, movements and figures. Session C on November 17-18 will provide information on collective marks, equitation, rider biomechanics and basics. To participate you need to be a member of USDF either (group or participating) the fee is $750 for all three sessions. Enter early for a $50.00 discount!! To be a silent auditor fees are $150 for all three sessions. Contact: elegantsporthorse@gmail.com #269-5016259 Bernadette Radke. Info on the "L" Educational Program can be found on the USDF site at www.usdf.org/education/judgetraining/lprogram/index.asp. Application forms can be found on our web site (www.glassed.org). Space is limited and your completed form and payment of fees reserves your spot in the Program. The Great Lakes Area Show Series - Educational Dressage organization is a USDF Region 2 GMO created to promote the art and sport of Dressage to young riders, new riders, inexperienced horses, and people just out to have fun with their horse. We concentrate on learning and making our shows inexpensive, fun and accessible to all. We pride ourselves on our warm and welcoming community of riders, trainers, show hosts, and volunteers. MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING The season is finally here! What a great turn out for the first ride for Competitive Mounted Orienteering! Thank you to all the brave new riders who tried CMO for the first time. We sure do look forward to seeing you out on the trails in the future. A big thank you goes out to Steve and Vera for putting on a great ride. While writing this in my mind I am getting ready for the three day ride at Ionia. Unfortunately we have some bad news about the Hungerford location. This year Hungerford is enforcing the ride and tie policy and this means that horses may not go off the trail. Because of this there will not be any CMO rides at Hungerford in Big Rapids. This is a difficult decision but we do not want to be responsible if people do decide to ride off the trail. Please watch our Facebook page and our website at micmo.org for updates on dates and locations of future rides. It still proves to be a busy June with a ride at Silver Creek on June 2nd and 3rd followed by a ride at Elba Equestrian Complex on June 9th and 10th. Thanks for your understanding while we try to find locations for future rides. Keep riding and stay safe out there!

SLEEPY HOLLOW TRL. RIDERS

The Rotten Egg Hunt on April 22 was well attended by 34 excited egg hunters. The Easter Bunny (Pat Brown and friends) had hidden numerous plastic eggs filled with candy and coins. Special “rotten

eggs” were hard to find and those found were exchanged for prizes. It was a wonderful day and all had a great time. Thanks Pat! The spring workbee on April 28 was cool, but 18 volunteers showed up and really worked. Gale Moore had crews repairing the outhouse roof, mending muddy spots with gravel, moving culverts and trail trimming. I provided a hot lunch and several brought birthday cakes to enjoy. We can never have too much cake! Several of us gals raked up the staging area. We have fluffed up the sand roll pit so the horses can really enjoy it! A big thank you to those who brought equipment to make the work easier. Plow Day scheduled for May 5 had to be cancelled due to the soaked ground. The heavy rains the days before left the areas to be plowed under water. There will be no makeup date this year. Thanks go to those who had made plans to make this event. Memorial weekend had the Blazing Saddles 4-H Club hosting a SHTRA camping weekend. Here are some of the upcoming events: Drive in the Park July 13-15; The DAMN Ride w/Ice Cream Social-July 27-29 with glow stick rides, perfect timing, and the stick horse race; The Legend of the Haunted Hollow with Sleezy Barb CMO August 24-26; The Great Sleepy Hollow Treasure Hunt-Sept. 7-9; Full Moon Madness Sept. 28-30 with GLHA and Sunday's Rangers 4 -H Club Judged Trail Ride; Ichabod Crane Days and The

WEST MI APPALOOSA REG The first show of the 2012 season is now under our belt and it looks like it was a good one. The MApHA Spring Show had pretty much all three of the big barns filled to the max with some going into a fourth barn. Now let's see if we can't do the same for our WMAR shows. The 2012 show schedule and show bills are posted on the website. Don't forget that for all the shows held at the Ingham County Fairgrounds in Mason, stalls will need to be prepaid. You can reserve them with me at appaloosastalls@yahoo.com but they will be subject to change until I receive your payment. If your payment is not received by the date posted on the show bill, you will be charged $10.00 more per stall. The MApHA Youth will be holding a strawberry shortcake sale at the June 2-3 WMAR show. If you are a vendor and would like to set up at our show, there is still time to sign up. The (27)

commercial rates have been reduced by the fairgrounds. Please contact the show manager or myself if you would like more information. Jackie Wintjen and I are still working on obtaining advertising for the pattern books that are sold at each show. If you have or know of a business that is interested in placing an ad, please contact one of us and we will see that you get a form. The WMAR 2012 Open Horse Incentive Program is a great way to make a little money while showing at WMAR shows. There are three divisions; Halter, Judged Performance and Gymkhana. There is a $35.00 nomination fee per division after which you start earning cash back for every WMAR open point earned. Checks are awarded at the yearend banquet. • Horses that worry about the proximity of others tend to be low in the pecking order. They are defensive, have a big bubble, are prone to kicking and appear aggressive when horses step into their personal space, which can be very big. Know that this is not aggressive; it is selfdefensive behavior. They don't want to let others get anywhere near them; they try to avoid battles. Your best approach is to protect your horse's space by waving the other horses away. Even if you can't touch them, your horse will feel that you are protecting them and settle down. Use a Carrot Stick or twirl your rope at them. Just be sure not to spook them or scare the rider! • Dominant horses tend to present different challenges. They usually want to go towards the other horses, sniff noses, bite, squeal, strike and have the tendency to charge at them to drive them off. They are willing to fight to assert their dominance. Your best approach is to not let them sniff another horse and keep your distance. What works well is to turn Zone 1 away and get them busy with a task. The more control you have over what your horse is focusing on, the better.

Parelli Natural Horsemanship

Confidence and Strategy for Riding in Groups By Linda Parelli www.ParelliConnect.com

Some horses are great when riding in groups, but others can get quite emotional – defensive, aggressive, impulsive, kicking, charging… not much fun for either of you! Here are some ideas to help you prepare yourself and your horse for a more safe and enjoyable experience, naturally. Confidence I once heard Ray Hunt define confidence as “being prepared for the unthinkable.” I love that! Now the challenge is to think about what the unthinkable would be and prepare for it. I remember many years ago, riding into a nest of bees out on the trails in Colorado. Pat yelled at me: “Gallop!” It is the exact opposite of what I would have done. I was already stopping and trying to swat at the bees landing on my horse. As a result of learning that, it became a regular part of teaching preparation for trail riding in all my courses. We have to be able to think ahead and rehearse in our minds what to do in every kind of situation because we can't always simulate everything with our horses. Some people and some horses are naturally more confident. They tend to be the left-brain types, but that is not a guarantee. People can lose their nerve for whatever reason, be confident in one situation and not another… same with horses. So it's important not to make any assumptions – always check things out. Success is all about preparation.

When it comes to riding in groups, you have to check both your horse's confidence and your own. It's great if your horse is calm and experienced, but even the most quiet horse can start to have trouble if the rider gets tense or panicky. The same goes in the opposite situation, because a confident rider tends to neglect their horse's needs because they are able to 'wrestle' the horse through problems rather than actually solve them. Sure, it can be done, but it's not a good experience for the horse or for future success. And it can be very dangerous. Let's do the savvy thing and be prepared. Strategies Keep it simple. You actually don't have to go into a public area to practice because, with a bit of forethought and arrangements with friends, you can do it all where you usually ride your horse. Here are the main elements to address in your preparation: 1. Equine Psychology 2. Approach and Retreat 3. Simulations 4. Repetition and Testing

Now, having mentioned a couple of strategies, the real secret lies in getting the relationship with you so strong that they don't even care about the other horses. All they should focus on is you and as long as

you are calm and on task, so are they. This means you have to be calm and focused, which may mean not chatting with your friends for a while! The goal is to get your horse calm, connected and responsive to you first. Now, if you don't have this when by yourself, it will be impossible in the company of others so make sure you are aiming for this every time you play with your horse on the ground or when riding. 2. Approach and Retreat The best way to build confidence in horses (and humans) is with approach and retreat. You approach the thing that is difficult and, before it becomes unbearable or frightening, you back off to where it feels safe again, then reapproach. Repeat this until, one by one, each threshold disappears and the horse can move forwards without hesitation or tension. The worst you can do is feel the fear and do it anyway, pushing through regardless. That just does not work when it comes to prey animals… and it's dangerous. How this relates to riding in groups with a horse that is afraid to be with others is rather simple… you start with just one other horse! Then you add one, and another and another, etc. This may not be all on the same day, but that is also quite possible so long as you don't add another horse until your horse is completely relaxed each time you added one.

1. Equine Psychology Always try to think about things from your horse's point of view, because it's different from a human's. Horses are herd animals, so when in a group, herd dynamics prevail: who is most dominant, what is the pecking order, where am 'I' in the pecking order, if one runs we all run… etc.

3. Simulations • Walk and circle: Ride in the same direction at the walk, turning little circles every so often. This helps horses not get so concerned about another horse following them. Remember – always stay out of the kick zone! That's about 9 feet, or one “horse-length.” • Pass each other from opposite directions: Start with a generous distance that slowly gets smaller but be sure to widen a little the moment you feel any of the horses get tight. Try to do this before the horse reacts, and pretty soon he will not have any issues at all about other horses coming towards him. What upsets horses is when they need to get out of another horse's bubble but are forced to stay on the same track. It can lead to total panic. • Play “Switch the Leader” games: First stop or slow down and allow the other horse to take the lead, giving a wide berth as they pass. Soon you'll be doing it at the trot and even the canter and able to stay quite close. • Ride in pairs, threes or fours: in a straight line abreast and then in different configurations such as an arrowhead, behind each other in a line, etc. Make sure you keep your horse on a predetermined track and don't drift off course. Imagine you are one of the Blue Angels Air Force demonstration team - the others are depending on you to not swerve around in the air! That's why these incredible pilots can fly with wing tips so close together. You need to be a good pilot for your horse and your friends when riding in groups. • Experiment with speed on a circle: Start by trotting, trotting faster then slower, faster and slower, then transitions to walk and trot… all as a group, as one. When this feels easy, and if you are all ready for it, do the same in canter – faster and slower, faster and slower. Vary the sizes of your circles – start smaller, get larger and smaller again, approach and

retreat style. • Horses get really upset when you hold them back, and this can spell disaster. Instead of holding them back, simply make your circles spiral in smaller, and keep riding forward until your horse doesn't feel the need to run any more. This occurs because the adrenaline gets used up in a positive way. Of course you would bend your horse to a stop with one rein if you got into trouble, doing less sooner. And remember that this is about rehearsal. It's going to be hard to bend to a stop in a group in a real situation, which is why you want to rehearse this until you are confident that your horse is going to keep it together under different conditions. • All for one and one for all: It's really important to all be there for each other during your preparations. Be conscious of how your actions affect others and don't be afraid to speak up when you need everyone to wait or slow down. Just make sure you ask sooner rather than later, at the first signs of difficulty. And do it calmly not in an emotional panic! Recently seven of us were riding at a nearby hunt club, not in the hunt but expanding our skills and exposing our horses to new environments. We felt confident to go for a bit of a gallop together, just a hand gallop, like a fast canter with us standing up a little in our stirrups. I told everyone that if their horse started to get excited to yell out

“circle!” and the leaders would turn to the right and stay circling until their horse was calm again. We didn't have to do it, which was great… but it's a wonderful strategy to keep in mind and rehearse for. 4. Repetition and Testing When it comes to preparation, repetition is a very important key. You need to do your simulations as a positive pattern, which means for seven sessions. In hearing that, you'll probably realize just how underprepared so many riders and horses are for their activities! What does Pat say? “Prior and proper preparation prevents poor performance.” Now, it doesn't mean that you're going to have to do it every time for every new situation, but when you are training in the beginning, you will need to take it seriously and establish the foundation for the future. Over-prepare rather than under-prepare. After that your leadership and your horse's trust in you should already be established and now it just needs to keep strengthening with just a little 'top up' here and there. But any time you're going into a very new and different and potentially quite challenging experience for your horse, think ahead. Be savvy, stay safe, be really prepared. What if things go wrong at the event or activity? Bend to a stop and get off as soon as it starts to feel bad and you have that “Uhoh” thought. The idea is to feel

when things are just starting to go wrong, like your horse getting tense and distracted, and you feel a little tight. Act right then. Of course you will always make sure you are well warmed up on the ground so your horse is calm, connected and responsive before you mount up. What else do you have to prepare for? It's important to know what kind of situation you are preparing for. In this way you can tailor the exercises to more accurately simulate and prepare for them: • Trail rides • Arena groups (warm-up arena, group lessons, clinics) • Competitions • Hunting • Parades In some of these situations, there will be additional elements such as horses coming too close, cars, wagons, hounds, displays, music, crowds, floats, stressed people, shouting, hurrying, etc. And while not all of us can gather a couple of thousand people or a live band at a moment's notice, take heart because this is about being able to keep your horse's attention and connection more than anything else. In simulations, you can just have one person make a commotion and challenge yourself to keep your own focus and calmly, but insistently, keep your horse on a task – getting him to put his feet on a pedestal is a good one to start with. After that, think of the

gait you'll be using when in that situation and over-prepare. If it's going to be the walk, get to where you can do it at the trot, and so on… and first on the ground. How to make a commotion? Having someone shaking a flag (Carrot Stick with plastic bag on the end), or shaking and dragging a tarp, banging on a barrel, fence, roof, jumping up and down, etc. will all work really well. Start softly and build from there, softening the commotion before the horse gets upset and then escalating again (approach and retreat).

(36)

Have your helper stay in one place at first, allowing you to change the proximity when ready. Later on, you can deal with more movement and unpredictability. As you know, we so often say “It's not about the _____ (fill in the blank).” It really is all about the relationship of trust and connection. When a horse really trusts you, he will learn to not worry unless you do… and of course you won't worry because you are emotionally fit! Be or become the leader your horse needs – calm, confident, prepared.

• PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING™ • Building a Partnership with Your Horse

stride and abrupt transitions. He also will feel heavy on his front end since his weight will have shifted onto it, and his hind legs will be dragging out behind him because they cannot reach beneath his body. In short, he is not balanced!

FORWARD, STRAIGHT, BALANCED, Part VI By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824

If you try to “set” a horse's head and force fake collection with your hands rather than allowing true collection to happen by engaging your horse's hind end with your seat and legs, you will get a horse that is not balanced and one that is behind your leg! If you feel your horse falling behind your leg, go back and practice the exercises in Part 2 of this series until he is straight, forward and balanced once again.

As you work on furthering your collection work, let's take a look at how you can feel whether or not your horse is moving straight and freely forward. Again, this material is taken from the fourpart series that Cyril and I did for Horse & Rider with the magazine's writer, Sue M. Copeland.

Your seat controls your horse's hind legs—his speed. When you are correctly balanced, your hips move in sync with your horse's motion. To speed him up, move your hips faster than his current movement. To slow down your horse, tighten your stomach and rump muscles in order to slow your hips' following motion.

In Front of Your Leg Your horse is ready, willing and able to work on collection when you can feel that he is moving freely forward without running through your hand. He feels energetic, not lazy, even when he is moving slowly. He is light in his front end with his poll above his withers, and he is responsive to your seat and legs.

When your horse is moving freely, is soft in your hands, and is clearly pushing himself forward from his hind legs rather than dragging himself along with his front ones, he is “in front of your leg.” His poll should be the highest part of his neck, meaning his face is at, or slight ahead of, a vertical line that is perpendicular to the ground. If his nose were to tip behind this line, you would know that his weight is tipping forward onto his front end, and you would see that the crest of his neck is higher than his poll.

As you learned in Part 2 of this series, your legs influence the back two-thirds of your horse's body, from the withers to the tail. This part of the horse is his engine. Your legs, combined with your seat act as both accelerator and brakes—decreased pressure means “stop,” and increased pressure means “go.

The Half-Halt A half-halt is a commonly used dressage aid to help with collection. Think of it like a “brake tap” in which you slow your

horse by closing your outside hand in rhythm with his stride, while maintaining his energy by keeping your seat and leg aids driving him forward. (Close your fingers for no longer than it takes you to inhale.) This will compress his body as his hindquarters sink, his back rounds, and his shoulders lift as you drive him gently into your bit barrier. That is collection! Use the circle from the previous exercises to practice slower- speed transitions using the half-halt. Remember, you want him to slow down without losing his energy (and thus balance). Close and open your fingers of your outside hand in rhythm with his stride until you achieve the desired slower speed. For more information and helpful training materials, please visit www.lynnpalm.com or call 800-503-2824.

The opposite of a horse being in front of your leg is logically called being “behind your leg.” If your horse is behind your leg, he will feel lazy and jerky in his movement and have a short, stiff

contain the animal source – vitamin D3 – because it tends to be more stable and therefore has a longer shelf life. But when your horse eats fresh grass, he is getting the plant form. Once inside your horse's body, they both have the same function. Vitamin D deficiency is more common than you might think. • Horses that are kept indoors have the highest risk. • Frequent bathing with soap inhibits the body's ability to produce vitamin D simply because the precursor in body oil (7- dehydrocholesterol) is washed away. • The reduced intensity of sunlight during the winter or at higher latitudes (starting with the upper one third of the U.S., into Canada) inhibits vitamin D production. • Vitamin D does not survive in hay. Deficiency causes reduced appetite, slowed growth, physitis in growing horses, bone demineralization (leading to stress fractures and bone deformities), and poor muscle contraction. Horses do best when they receive at least 6.6 IU of vitamin D per kg of body weight. For an 1100 lb (500 kg) horse, this translates into 3300 IU/day. Sunlight exposure—5 to 8 hour s /d a y und e r op t i ma l conditions—will produce this amount of vitamin D. Vitamin D toxicity is unusual but possible, and somewhat

Thirty to 90 minutes in the sun will give the average person all the required daily vitamin D. But a horse's hair coat alone creates such a significant barrier to absorption that it typically takes 5 to 8 hours of exposure to ultra violet light for horses to produce enough vitamin D. Compound that with added blocks like fly spray, coat conditioner, blanket or sheet, or decreased body oils due to bathing, and it becomes apparent that in some cases, horses may not get enough of this vital ingredient. How does sunshine convert to vitamin D? The key is in the skin's oils, which contain a derivative of cholesterol called 7dehydrocholesterol. When exposed to sunshine, this compound is converted to Cholecalciferol, which is then converted to the actual vitamin D, known as: 25-hydroxy-

cholecalciferol, or D3, for short. D3 is actually a hormone. A hormone, simply put, is a substance that is produced in one place and delivers a message to another place. D3 is produced in the kidney, and its message is to insure correct blood calcium levels which are critical to the proper function of your horses' bones, joints, and muscles. D3 looks first to increase absorption by the intestine of ingested calcium, then if necessary, it will key the bones to give up calcium, and finally, it will instruct the kidneys to reduces calcium losses through urine. There is a vitamin D2 which is found in plants. Plants make D2 from sunlight exposure, much in the same manner as D3 is made in animals, except the original starting point is ergosterol. Most vitamin supplements, however,

confusingly, the signs of toxicity are similar to deficiency: reduced feed intake, poor growth, and an unthrifty appearance. An upper limit of 44 IU/kg of body weight (22,000 IU for an 1100 lb horse) has been established. Improper supplementation can cause excessively high intake; check all your supplements and fortified feeds to make certain you're feeding a safe amount. The very good news is that sunlight exposure cannot lead to excessive vitamin D production. So give your horse as much time outdoors, with minimal chemical or physical barriers. Let that vitamin D message do its wonders for the good of your horse.
