Building a Partnership with Your Horse

Western Dressage: Finding a Suitable Horse By Lynn Palm I am so excited to do this series on western dressage. I am positive this new discipline following classical dressage with a western horse is going to give the western industry its next step in developing better horsemen. Dressage promotes “Riding Well” and “Being the Rider Your Horse Deserves!” When I was young, it did not take me long to learn that if I wanted to participate in the sport of riding, I had to learn to become a good rider. I was in the dressage saddle learning this. Learning to become a good rider was not only necessary in the dressage saddle, but is required in any saddle on any breed of horse. As a young rider I felt so fortunate to learn dressage because it was a new discipline in the U.S. at the time. I recognized that I rode NO differently in the dressage saddle than I did in a western saddle or hunt saddle. I found it very interesting that the training I was learning with dressage worked on any kind of horse. Breed didn’t matter then and it doesn’t matter now. Dressage gave me the best foundation possible as well as a solid understanding of correct fundamentals about riding. It also helped me understand correct training according to the horse’s conformation, instincts, behaviors, temperament, and personality. Most importantly, I learned that it takes TIME to train horses naturally. The goal is to teach the horse to do tasks with manners, obedience, and willingness to perform. Learning dressage has taught me that a balanced rider, communication through the rider’s natural aids, and a balanced horse will give you willing and confident responses that will last the horse’s lifetime. The key here is that it is training with understanding, not training through submission. By using dressage principles, I have been able to achieve success as a competitor and trainer of horses for more than four decades. As a top competitor in AQHA for many years, I showed numerous horses that performed in multiple western and English events. Dressage can be done with western horses and in the western saddle. I am so excited to be a part of western dressage as it starts! I encourage you to follow their tests and levels because this will lead to a more controlled and responsive horse, whether you are on the trails or in the show ring. You may be wondering what horse is best for western dressage. If you’ve watched traditional English dressage on television or gone to an event, you have no doubt noticed that many of the horses are warmbloods. As wonderful as those horses may be (and they are), don’t worry…you don’t need a warmblood to participate in western dressage. The beauty of this hot new discipline is that any horse and all breeds are suited for it. This includes all the stock horse breeds, such as Quarter Horses, Paints, Appaloosas, and Palominos. You'll also see many “nonstock” breeds, including Morgans, Arabians, Saddlebreds, even draft horses, and ponies. If you are happy with the horse you are currently riding and have a good bond with him, that’s all you need to get started. You certainly don’t have to go buy a different horse. Williams is the coach of the Horse Judging Team. “We have trophies dating back to 1900 for the team,” said Williams, “There’s a gold statue that was an annual award for almost 20 years, so it must have been something outstanding to be able to judge horses then.” This past year, the team has competed at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio and at the AQHA World Show held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The team placed Top Ten at the Quarter Horse Congress and Top Fifteen at the AQHA World Show. “This is different from the general livestock team. There is a performance aspect, not just confirmation,” said Williams. “Being on the team the past two years has allowed me to expand me knowledge of how a horse is supposed to move and look while being able to prepare myself for the future. I want to go into the horse industry, so I have to know what the breed standard is at the time,” said Jennifer Pietsch, a senior member of the Horse Judging Team, “I’ve gotten opportunities to travel the country and meet industry professionals I know I would have never been able to have and do if I wasn’t on the team.” Meeting several times a week, in a classroom as well as at the Equine Center, the judging team was able to see the horses in person and gain knowledge hands-on outside of a classroom with pictures and videos. “I know I wouldn’t have been as successful in competitions if I wasn’t able to see the high quality of horses at the farm. I was able to see the standard and know exactly what I needed to see in the show ring,” said Pietsch. As we look back over the years, the program has changed from draft and saddle-type horses to stocktype horses while holding the high standard and quality breeding, we can always be thankful that the equine program at Ohio State has evolved and continued over the years to make way in research and breakthrough in studies within the horse industry. AHC ANNOUNCES SPEAKERS FOR 2016 ISSUES FORUM The American Horse Council’s National Issues Forum on June 14, sponsored by Luitpold Animal Health, in Washington, DC will feature several Members of Congress in line with the theme of “Putting More Horsepower in Congress.” Senator Pat Roberts (RKS), Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, is confirmed as the lead-off speaker. Congressman Mike Conaway (RTX), Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, has also been invited. “We would be very fortunate to have the chairmen of both the Senate and House Agriculture Committees address us,” said AHC president Jay Hickey. “The $102 billion equine industry is an important sector of the agriculture community, not only when horses are in their breeding life, but also when they move into their racing, showing, work, or recreation careers. The equine world is still regulated by the US Department of Agriculture in terms of disease control, import/export, interstate movement, and research. The Congressional agriculture committees are important to the horse industry.” The Issues Forum will also feature a special panel, which will include representatives of the U.S. Equestrian Federation and The Jockey Club, to update the industry on their plans to require the microchipping of horses beginning in 2017. Speaking will be Mary Babick, Vice President of the U.S. Hunter Jumper Association, Summer Stoffel, who serves on the USEF Horse Recording & ID Task Force Committee, and Matt Iuliano, Executive Vice President and Executive Director of The Jockey Club. This year’s National Issues Forum will be held on Tuesday, June 14, during the AHC’s annual convention. The convention will run from June 12 to 15 at the Washington Court Hotel in Washington, DC. The AHC convention will also feature the inaugural meeting of executive directors of national equine organizations. Organized by Julie Broadway, the new president of the AHC, and David Foley, executive director of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, this meeting will allow the top staff of horse associations to join together to discuss internal, administrative-type issues that each may face in their day-to-day operations. Such issues might include membership retention, dealing with volunteers, and management. This meeting will feature two speakers from the American Society of Association Executives to talk about their peer group formation experience and benefits. The AHC annual meeting will also include the meetings of all the AHC’s committees. This year each committee will be asked to address how its members can get their organizations more involved in grassroots lobbying on legislation and regulations within their jurisdiction. In other words how AHC committees and horse organizations can “Put More Horsepower in Congress.” The AHC’s convention will also include the AHC’s Congressional Reception on June 14, the evening of the Issue Forum, and the Congressional Ride-In on Wednesday, June 15, during which the industry can meet with their federal elected officials to discuss issues important to them. BREUER-BERTERA ELECTED TO AHC BOARD OF TRUSTEES Marilyn Breuer-Bertera, of Northville, Michigan, has been elected to the AHC’s Board of Trustees. She will join USTA District 9 Director Don Marean and USTA Executive Vice President and CEO Mike Tanner as harness racing representatives. “As a lifelong participant in Standardbred harness racing, I have always worked to advance the initiatives of the horse racing industry,” said Ms. Breuer-Bertera. “I now welcome this opportunity to collaborate with representatives of various breeds, for the benefit of the entire equine industry in North America.” Ms. Breuer-Bertera has been a board member of the USTA since 2010. Recently she was appointed Chair of the newly formed Legislative Advisory Committee that supports racing states in their individual legislative efforts. She is a past Director of the Michigan Harness Horsemen’s Association, serving as Secretary of that board for 15 years. “The AHC is fortunate to have Ms. BreuerBertera join the AHC’s Board of Trustees,” said AHC President Jay Hickey. “The Standardbred and harness racing industry has a long and valued history with the AHC and we are pleased to continue that. Her addition to the board will bring new ideas and influence for the horse industry.” Ms. Breuer-Bertera and her husband, Rocky Bertera, a trainer and blacksmith, race a small stable of horses in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. She grew up on a farm in central Michigan, racing harness horses at the Michigan county fairs with her father. She also holds a B.S. in Education- Physical Education and Business Education- from Central Michigan University.

REINING MICHIGAN INC. (MRHA) COME REIN WITH US! Often freestyle reining is the first introduction most equestrians have to the exciting sport of reining. It is a big draw at high profile events like the Quarter Horse Congress and the MHC Horse Expo because it is entertaining for anyone, even those with no equine background. On Saturday March 12th, thirteen of Michigan’s top professional and non professional riders performed freestyle reining to a standing room only crowd at the MSU Pavilion for the 2016 MHC Horse Expo. If you missed this thrilling performance fear not! Reining Michigan (RMI) has added a freestyle event, along with a full slate of NRHA classes, to their June 10-12th show at the Midland County Fairgrounds. Freestyle will be the last class offered on Saturday, June 11th and it's free! In fact, there is no admission fee for the entire show weekend. Interested in leaving 20 foot slide tracks or spinning a horse so fast it's like a carnival ride? Then you need to get involved in reining! So the question is, how do you get started? If you are even remotely interested in trying out reining, Reining Michigan would like to encourage you to show up early on the 11th and watch the green reiner exhibitors and chat with their membership before you enjoy the freestyle celebration. Reining Michigan offers green reining classes for people and horses that don't have much experience in the sport yet, but want to try it out and get more involved. One of the freestyle competitors who can tell you just how great reining can be is Kara Gerard, winner of the MHC Horse Expo Freestyle and up and upcoming NRHA Professional. She started her career as a green reiner 8 years ago, and over those last 8 years she has consistently built her skills and is now earning money and coaching riders to top local and national achievements within the NRHA and APHA in both reining and all around events. Kara spent her green and rookie years shadowing reining trainers and scribing for judges. “After just a couple years showing in

the green reiner and rookie, I was ready to move onto rookie professional and then I opened up my business to include reining as a specialty, as well as the pleasure horses.” Kara saw the green reiner classes as “a great way to get my feet wet without having to invest in owning the horse. It gave me the feel for running a pattern with more speed than I was used to, but it didn't require me to have to run as fast as the more experienced reiners while I was still learning and getting comfortable with the maneuvers.” Reining Michigan Inc. (RMI), an affiliate of the National Reining Horse Assoc. (NRHA), is a nonprofit volunteer run organization responsible for promoting and supporting reining events in Michigan. RMI offers fun, family-oriented competition for first time riders up to world champions. The entry level green reiner classes are designed to introduce riders to reining with no horse ownership requirements, simplified patterns and reduced membership and entry fees. Horse Association & Club News BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS ASSOC. Nowadays, the lead story on frequent newscasts is the weather (BAD!) and in previous columns we have often mentioned how Mother Nature was kind to us when BTRA has held an event. Well, she wasn't in our corner on May 14th, when we held a ride and pizza party in conjunction with our annual meeting at the Brighton Recreation Area. Cold temperatures, wind, and rain were the order of the day and not surprisingly, our ridership was down. Nevertheless, a number of our hardy members showed up with their horses and hit the trails, and even more showed up for the pizza and meeting. Recent BTRA activities and accomplishments were reviewed, including the designation of BTRA as an official Friend’s Group, our participation in the DNR Friend’s of Michigan State Parks Summit, trail improvement and signage projects, and our campaign to promote the equestrian opportunities available at Brighton. We are also reaching out to other potential trail users, including hikers, dog walkers, and bird watchers. A flyer highlighting these opportunities was recently produced and copies were distributed to BTRA members at the meeting. In turn, they will be visiting local tack shops, farm and feed stores, and related business places and ask that these flyers be posted to tell folks what the “Equestrian Side” of the Brighton Recreation Area has to offer. The idea behind this, as mentioned in a previous column, is to encourage other responsible outdoor enthusiasts to visit our trail system, and we have a new BTRA membership category for them in the hope that they will join in the support of our organization. We also heard from one of our members who is a veterinarian and over the last several months has been passing out flyers describing the equestrian facilities at Brighton when she makes barn calls. These flyers are specifically designed for horse owners who might be disposed to trail riding. But who knows, even some show people might be willing to give trail riding a try. Finally, we elected (actually, re-elected) four BTRA Board members. Agnes Wallace, Gayle Pawl, Alyssa Connolly and Penny Wilson have served our organization for varying lengths of time, ranging from a few years to many years. And, they all wanted to continue their service. We also want to mention that we recently tallied up the number of riders who have visited our staging area and registered at our sign-in station. Since October of last year through April of this year, 430 people signed in and many offered positive comments on their experience at Brighton. FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOCIATION Hello Trail Riders! We would like to thank the riders/campers that attended our Spring Camp Out May 12th-15th. These brave souls and horses endured everything Michigan could throw at them. There were heavy rains, cold (and it was COLD!), beautiful stretches of sunny times, hail, and even snow on Sunday morning. But even with the ups and downs of the weather, it was all about friends, picturesque flower covered trails, pancakes in the morning and a yummy potluck supper on Saturday. The pancakes were hot off the griddles and covered with maple syrup made by John and DaryAnn Letts. A little adaptation to the canopy kept the cold wind off of the crowd. Huddling together gets you introduced quickly to any new friends! 18 rigs were counted in camp and around 30 people attended this year. It was beautiful at the Whitford Lake event area, fresh cut grassy parking for rigs and horses. We have a new outhouse with hitching rail donated by the club at this site. The perimeter is lined with picket poles and we supply water for the horses. Trails are easy access right out of the camping area. There is even a cart trail open for these events. It was great to see everyone that came and made this another success! If you didn’t make this event, please put the Annual Fall Equestrian Camp Out on September 15-18 on your ride schedule. This is ditto of the Spring event with our fundraising auction on Saturday evening after the potluck supper. DarylAnn is our auctioneer and keeps us laughing while she raises money for the cause. A new manure pit is up and ready for use at the trailhead. Thank you to Ken and Roger who worked two days alone on this. Concrete was poured to make it easier to clean. Please, use the pit or take your poop home, we don't want it left in our staging area. There is also a hitching rail by the bathroom for your convenience. And, last but not least, our new kiosk supplied by the DNR is up. Our new grill for the pavilion will be installed by the club soon. Come ride our 20+ miles of trails with 6 creek crossings, a variety of terrain, prairies, woods, lakes, always groomed and easy riding. Our trailhead is big rig friendly with pull-in and pullout parking and a pitcher pump for water for horses. Come to a ride or potluck and get to know us. We’ll be waiting for you! GREAT LAKES DISTANCE RIDING ASSOCIATION How do I check my horses pulse? The most basic way would be with a stethoscope. Position the ear pieces of your stethoscope so they point slightly towards the front of your head. Position the diaphragm of the stethoscope on the left side of the horse just behind the elbow where the girth rests. Move it around in that area until you can hear the beating of the heart. At rest, the horse’s heart has a slow, regular rhythm that sounds like “kerplunk, ker-plunk.” Each “ker-plunk” is counted as one beat, not two. Once you have established the rhythm, look at your watch. You can count the beats for 15 seconds and multiply by 4 or take the pulse for 30 seconds and multiply by 2. Your intent is to establish how many times your horse’s heart beats in one minute. Take his pulse often. Learn what his resting heart rate is. Take it directly after a workout, then 10 minutes after and at different situations/locations and times of the day. Fluctuation is typical, find out what is normal for your horse. While a horse may come into the vet check with a high heart rate, the rider can lower the heart rate in a number of ways. A conditioned horse’s heart rate will lower on its own with little help of the rider. The rider can facilitate the lowering of the heart rate by cooling the horse through water on the neck and legs of the horse, or even by icing the WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Horse Association & Club News GREAT LAKES DISTANCE RIDING, cont. horse down. As the temperature of the horse declines, the heart rate will also decline. However, if the horse has been over stressed, even after the heart rate has come down, if the horse is stressed again, the heart rate will jump up again. When the horse is presented to the vet, the heart rate should be lower than pulse criteria set by the Vet before the ride (e.g., 60, 64). If the heart rate is above criteria, the vet will probably look at the card to see how long it took the horse to come down to criteria. If the heart rate is still at criteria, and the horse has been waiting around for several minutes, again the vet might be a bit concerned. As always, there are some tricks you can play to lower the heart rate even while the vet is checking. First, if another horse walks by, particularly a best buddy, then the horse’s rate is sure to go up. Stand such that you block the horse’s view of whatever might excite him. Do not let the horse eat while the vet is taking the pulse. Do not let the horse throw his head way up. Preferably, have the horse hold his head in a “neutral” position. If you have a calming technique, such as gently rubbing the horse, do so. For yourself, take a deep breath and try to relax to show your horse that the excitement is over, no more trotting right now. HIGHLAND TRAIL RIDERS ASSOC. Equine Campout Weekend Report I am pleased to report that our first equine only campout weekend was a SUCCESS! Friday was a beautiful day for riding and many arrived early and took advantage of the weather. However, Mother Nature threw a hissy fit on Saturday but our campers stayed true. You absolutely have to love equine campers, no matter what happens they roll with it and have a great time.

Fun was had by all, we had about 10 people who rode the west loop despite of the weather to have the honors of first pick for the prizes. While our day riders attendance was down (don’t blame you guys with the forecast), we accomplished our goal which was to fill the campground for the weekend. Our current plans are to have two more equine only events this year over the weekends beginning September 9th and October 7th. Yes, we had some unexpected circumstances, but our participants were understanding and we thank you all for that. We have learned a lot and have some ideas of how we might switch things up for the next two events, to make things less complicated. A special thanks to the Pontiac Lake Horseman’s Association board who shared their knowledge and the participation of their members. Stay tuned for more details. Right now we are just trying to regroup and catch our breath. There are many reasons riders should explore Hungerford trail system, here are just a few: Options for overnight camping, day parking area, and a group campground. The group

campground has eight campsites and each campsite is large enough for a horse trailer or camper, two vehicles and eight people; includes a fire pit and out-bathroom. Advanced reservations for the group campground is required and reservations are made online at www.recreation.gov (type in Hungerford Equestrian Group Camp) in the search box and you can check available dates. The cost per night is $75. The Family Trail Ride and Picnic is Saturday, June 4th from 11am – 2pm. HTRA members can invite their family, friends, or guest and ride to Joan & Marcie (J&M Camp) to meet with other trail riders for a Hotdog Picnic. The ride from the main campground to J&J Camp takes approx-imately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Riders can stop at J&M Camp to meet and greet; then continue for an additional 30 minute ride for ice cream dessert at the Woodville Store. We are still accepting 2016 membership applications. Horse Association & Club News KENSINGTON TRAIL RIDERS ASSOC. First a reminder about the June 3 KTRA campout at the Kensington Metropark Staging Area. Some of the events you can look forward to at the camp-out are a Friday night New Moon ride (meet at 8:30 pm at the staging area), Saturday morning breakfast of omelets, freshly made hash browns, bagels, juice and coffee, Saturday night potluck (KTRA provides the meat) and a karaoke DJ. Membership has its benefits....non-members will be paying higher rates for campsites so renew your membership soon or at the camp-out. To register for the camp-out, you can contact Deanna at dshagency@aol.com. In July we will again be participating in the Milford Fourth of July Parade. You must be a member to participate and you can sign up for membership on the day of the parade. We will meet at Muir Middle School at 9AM to decorate our horses and to enjoy coffee and donuts. The parade begins at 11AM. Muir Middle School is at 425 George Street in Milford. If you would like to participate, but not ride, we have volunteer opportunities for horse walkers, pooper scoopers, and banner carriers. We will meet at the Kensington Horse Staging Area on Martindale Road at 1AM. The ride runs until 3PM with a barbeque to follow. Also coming up in August is our Member Appreciation Day (August 13th) and our new KTRA Kidz Fun Show (date TBD). Reminder – if you do not have a park sticker on your vehicle, there is a $10 entry fee. We have been alerted by the park that they will begin checking vehicle stickers at the staging area. MetroPark stickers are $35 annually ($21 for seniors). Regular stickers can be purchased online or at the park entrance. Senior stickers (62+) need to be purchased at the MetroPark toll booth or office. Additionally, for $59 you can buy a combination MetroPark and Oakland park sticker. See you on the trails!

MAYBURY STATE PARK TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION Hope you all have gotten out to do a little riding since winter has abated and we have some spring weather. Horses shedding out, a couple of good sweats and a bath or two and they will be slick and shiny! A few of us met at the ranger station to make plans for the June 18th Scrabble Ride. In attendance were, Park Rangers Sarah Z, the new Head Ranger Kim H, Cindy K, President, Lisa Z, our treasurer, Merle R., me, Christina P, membership officer and Jennie P. our secretary, via phone. It was decided that along with the potluck we would serve hot dogs and chips, but you all are welcome to bring dishes to pass-like maybe dessert! Sandra W., our former treasurer did the taxes for the group and sent them in for signatures, thank you Sandra! Along with discussing who would take care of what in regards to the Scrabble Ride, we discussed what it would take to get the Beck Road trail reopened. It is an original trail, and has been closed off and on over the years due to some wet conditions down by the stream during the wet seasons. The Trail Riders had put in culverts, geo cloth and tons of gravel probably 12-15 years ago and the club may have to fix and maintain it ourselves, as the park has gotten equipment stuck down there. We also discussed the wooden bridge on the beech/maple forest trail, it can be challenging when it is wet and slippery, maybe putting in some culverts, geo cloth and gravel to make a safer river crossing right next to it. I like the bridge myself, its been there for 20 plus years. Come on out and enjoy our Beautiful Urban Gem, watching it awaken into Glorious Bloom is such a wonderful spectacular happening! Unfortunately the season is off to a challenging start with snow falling during the first two rides. Thank you to the true campers out there that roughed it during the rain, sleet, and hail at Ortonville, you made the ride a success! plate course on Sunday, but one plate remained hidden to all the short course teams on Saturday. Thanks so much to Steve Keim for all the effort put on this ride. There are so many opportunities for horses and riders out there that we should never run out of new things to try. He will reserve the group camp if enough riders are interested. Otherwise you can pay $15 for an individual site on a firstcome, first-served basis. Megan McGarry delivered our brochures to the MFTHBA booth at the April Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio. She got to meet a few of the people from the MFTHBA and observed the MFT’s who were on display there. Kathy reported that the recent Spring Training Clinic with clinician, Levi Beechy, was a great success! The How to Horse Camp with Jan Wolfin had 12 attendees. Thank yous go out to Levi and Jan who hosted the clinic and class, Kathy, Chuck and Julie Parliament who provided food and/or worked in the food booth. Thanks again! There is still time to reserve a spot for yourself in the Gaited Dressage Clinic with Penny Underwood slated for July 9th. Go to the MFTA website or Facebook page for the required form and additional information. It will be held at Massman Stable, 714 Hogsback Road, Mason, MI. MFTA members get a $10 discount ($90 fee for non-MFTA) to participate and $5 off to audit. Non-MFTA pay $20 to audit. Please get your $50 reservation sent in ASAP! Stalls will be available to rent if needed, self-contained camping is allowed at no cost July 8th and food will be available to purchase on-site. It was voted to allow non-gaited horses to participate also in this clinic if the spots are not filled by gaited riders. tion Showplace at 46100 Grand River Ave. in Novi, MI. A non-profit promotional booth costs $175 and a stall goes for $125 at this event. Char made the motion, which Marilyn seconded, to reserve a booth and stall at this expo by the October deadline. Discussion followed concerning finding an appropriate horse to demo there, lodging and the specifics surrounding this expo. page as the date gets closer. Our final event of 2016 will be the Circle Ride. This popular favorite ride is one that we co-host with Kensington Trail Riders. It consists of riding the eleven mile loop that connects the two parks. The proceeds of this ride will go to the Michigan Horse Coalition. Both sites will be offering lunch and Proud Lake will offer a potluck dinner and camping all weekend. The Circle Ride will take place on Sunday, September 25th. April 19 SHTRA held the first work bee for the Big Woods wooden bridge re-decking project that the DNR asked us to do. SHTRA fully funded this project, from special ordering 3” thick cut oak boards to fixing the Taft Rd. parking lot to allow tractor access. Fourteen volunteers attended on April 19 to trim the trail and ready the parking lot. Geo tec and a load of gravel took care of the low spots. On April 23, twenty-two volunteers spent the day and donated 126 volunteer hours to get the old boards off and out to the road. The new boards were nailed on and the railing went back up. This 33 ft. bridge is really solid and should last equestrians a long time. Another work bee was held to cut down several dead ash trees that were threatening trail usage. This project was planned by Don and Pat Brown and supported by many others. Thanks to Bill Thelan and Rosie Johnson for the use of their driving skills with their tractors. Mike Woods and Sue Chant worked on trail drainage maintenance. Todd, Diane and Andrea Ring family answered my call for someone to fix Saturday’s lunch. Nearly 165 volunteer hours went into this project. Thanks to all who helped. Memorial Day weekend will be the first campover weekend. Youth groups are encouraged to attend. All youth will ride the trail, games and camp activities for free. There will be a Patriotic theme for the weekend. Saturday evening will have a potluck and various games and prizes. No RSVP is necessary, but if you are bringing a large group, let us know to help plan. Call Chanda at 517.285.6501. Glow sticks. Speaking of camping – Don't forget that BOTH RENTAL CABINS HAVE EQUESTRIAN Pickett POLES and connect to the trail network. If you don’t have an LQ trailer, are traveling on US -27, or have family members who want to camp with a roof overhead – check out the possibility of renting one of these scenic cabins. Online reservations are made on the DNR website. July 1-4 will be a camping weekend with Christmas in July? And on Sunday will be the Great Treasure Hunt from 10am-2pm. Come and ride like a Pirate!! Prizes!! Wench Linda will be the host, Mates! September 2nd-5th will be the Labor Day weekend camp-over. We’ll celebrate the memory of Dennis Austin with glow stick poker rides and Root Beer floats. RANCH HORSE ASSOCIATION OF MI The 2016 Show Season got off to a great (although cold) start with the RHAM Spring Challenge. Our first triple-judged show also introduced Cow Catch and Ranchmanship classes. We will now use the Great Lakes Circuit showbill for the June, July, and September shows. Our showbill, entry forms, and other helpful documents are located on our website at www.miranchhorse.com. RHAM will be announcing the 2016 Youth Representative at our next show on June 11 at Berrien Springs. The Youth Representative participates in our shows and events and is an integral part of what we do. If you’ve not tried RHAM yet, please come out and see what we are all about. ARHA has expanded registration to include appendix, POA and mustang horses, so this could be a great time for you to start showing your horse. Memorial Judged Trail Ride by The Rangers 4-H Club. There are 5 divisions to test your horsemanship skills. This well-attended event is fun and the cash pots grow every year. There may be optional camping on September 24th. TBA if we have enough requests. October 14-16 will be our Spooky Ichabod weekend. Decorated campsites, costumes and a sweet poker run will be apart of the fun. Chili cook-off on Saturday afternoon. Prizes!! WESTERN DRESSAGE ASSOC. OF MI The WDAMI Schooling Show is taking place on June 4, 2016 at the Windy Ridge Ranch in White Cloud, Michigan! This is our first Schooling Show and we are so excited to be able to offer this! For the past several years many dressage schooling shows have added Western Dressage to their ride options. This has given our Michigan riders an opportunity to participate in judged competition and be provided feedback to help them! We give a big thank you to the dressage schooling shows who have embraced this new sport! The Jec Ballou Clinics are filling up very quickly. The June Clinic being held June 10-12 at the Tromble Bay Equestrian Center, LLC in Cheboygan, MI is full, but you can still audit the clinic. WESTERN MI APPALOOSA REGIONAL Well, the first WMAR approved Appaloosa show of the season is now under our belts. We had a gorgeous weekend and plenty of entries from several states and a province! I also noticed, while doing stall charts, several competitors that were new to us. I’m tickled that they decided to join us at our shows and I would like to welcome them. We hope to see you at future shows this summer. Our next show will be the WMAR Red, White and Blue show at Mason, MI on June 4 & 5, 2016, followed by the WMAR State Show at Centreville, MI on July 16 & 17, 2016 and then the Sizzler Show that we co-host with the MApHA on August 6 & 7, 2016. Don’t forget that we will be offering both Ranch Horse Pleasure as well as Ranch Horse Trail at our WMAR sponsored shows. It was decided that at the June show in Mason, Open Stallion halter classes will be split into Jr. & Sr. with the Mare and Gelding age splits remaining as is. At the Centreville show, ALL open halter classes will be split Jr. & Sr. Earning a little extra money while showing is always a plus, so how about signing your favorite show mount up for the WMAR Incentive program. Prize money is given out at the banquet based on the number of points earned in your division throughout the show season. Forms can be found under the “Service Page”

on the WMAR website. We are still looking for someone to take over the show office as 2016 will be our last year with our fabulous show office team of Brad & Kyle (and, sometimes, Julie Dopp). The WMAR, as well as the MApHA have started the hunt for someone to run our show offices starting in 2017. Please, let us know if you would be interested in running the show office or know of someone who is. If you have any news and/or photos of your Appaloosas that you think would be interesting to the rest of us, I’d love to have you share them with us either on our Facebook page or by emailing them to me to include in the newsletter. YANKEE SPRINGS TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION Board Meeting Minutes - May 11, 2016 This meeting was held at YS Horsemen’s campground starting with a potluck meal at 6:00. Ron Walker called the meeting to order at 6:25. Special Guest: Andru Jevicks, Yankee Springs Park Manager. Andru Jevicks YS Park Manager: Andru asked that the wording on our insurance be changed in the secondary insurance line to read State of Michigan, Department of Recreation etc. Andru also stated he looks forward to working with our organization and wants our relationship to be a partnership and he is available to anyone who would like to speak to him. With regard to the ORV’s traveling on county roads. Andru was able to convince the commissioners to exclude Duffy Road. They are not allowed to run on the decertified roads within the recreation area. You can get a complete list of ORV restricted roads from the Barry County website: www.barrycounty.org/2016/04/orvordinance/./ ORV’s are only allowed to ride on

certified county roads. Carla asked why the fire rings needed to be so high. This is a state wide rule to safeguard small children falling into the campfires. We all thanked Andru for attending our meeting and giving us a chance to ask questions and get park updates. Trail Report: There is now a completed re-route on the 9 mile off the power line, enjoy it! There is a tree down on the 4 mile that should be cut up, also it was reported several leaning trees you ride under which should be removed. The 9 mile through the clear cut section is getting overgrown again. Ron is seeking permission from the Game Area Wildlife Habitat Biologist Manager Sara Thompson to bulldoze a path through this area. John Dermody has volunteered his bulldozer for this job. Bridge Proposal: A proposal to build a bridge across the creek on the 6 mile to access the northwest corner of that block and create new trails. A drawing needs to be created with the proposal and submitted to Andru. Shot Clinic Update: This was the biggest attended shot clinic so far with 45 horses and 13 dogs. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported this clinic. Carla proposed a sign be created to hang at the trail head of each trail warning riders when members are on that trail doing trail clean up. Carla will create a sign. Bench Update: Dick Smith built a bench and brought it to the meeting for board approval, the bench was on temporary legs for display, it met approval. Skip will pick up the lumber for 6 more benches and set a work day. Judged Trail Ride: June 25 will be our YSTRA Judged Trail Ride. Susie Dykstra is this years Chairperson. A committee meeting will be held Tuesday, May 17th at 5:30pm. Anyone who wants to help with this years event please join this meeting. Meeting adjourned at 7:22.
