T-SUL MEDICATED CREAM
is an excellent aid in the treatment of thrush, white line disease and dry hooves. Great aid for any bacterial or fungal hoof problem. It won’t stain your hands. Tea Tree Oil is excellent at killing bacteria and fungus. Also contains a topical pain reliever. Use daily until clear. Works well as a preventative. Excellent as a hoof conditioner.
is simply the best medicated cream you will ever use. T-Sul uses Tea Tree Oil, Sulfur, Zinc Oxide and Glycerin in natural Olive Oil and Bees Wax base. T-Sul does not sting. It’s fantastic for scratches, cuts, scrapes, ringworm, rain rot, mud fever and any bacterial or fungal rash or infection. Try it on your dog’s hot spots.
To order T-Hoof and T-Sul call (313) 320-0696 or go to www.equusselect.com Equus Select LLC, 1657 Aline Drive, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236
Look what people are saying about T-Sul & T-Hoof! Nothing has gotten rid of my horse’s scratches as well as T-Sul. He gets them every year, so I have practice. ~ Val J. I bought a horse with a bad case of scratches, not knowing he had it. The first year I got medicine from the vet and it didn’t make any kind of change. I discovered your T-Sul product two years ago and the MSU Expo and started treating his feet. MAN – what a difference! ~ Carolyn P. T-Sul has performed better than any other topical dressing I have used in 35 years with horses. ~ Andrew M. Used the medicated hoof oil, T-Hoof, for thrush and it cleared it right up! ~ Elise S. I love the T-Hoof for my horses because it eliminates the threat of thrush immediately and it conditions the hoof. ~ Jan B. Used T-Sul on awful cuts for horse, dogs, people – cured scratches on drafts, got rid of ear infection in dog. Works really well on scars and injuries to heal well and pretty. ~ Julie B. T-Sul worked wonders! Cured my horse’s rain rot and saw hair growth immediately! ~ Sabrina N. My horse had chronic thrush that I could not resolve until using T-Hoof! Now he is thrush free! ~ Mary D. White Line disease – treated it once a day for about four days with T-Hoof and it was gone. ~ Larry F.

A HORSE AT SCHOOL! If you were driving by Hiller Elementary in Madison Heights one Friday in late October and thought that you saw a live horse in the front of the school, you were right!
Artists have been depicting horses in art since the beginning of art making. Artists drew horses on cave walls in France 20,000 years ago. The Chinese shaped horses in clay 1,200 years ago during the Tang Dynasty, and Leonardo DaVinci was a master at rendering the horse. Kindergarten through second grade classes at Hiller were beginning a unit on equine art, so it seemed only natural to have them begin by sketching a real horse. Craig Hinshaw, Lamphere School District's Art specialist, invited Jill Richardson, a friend and retired teacher, to bring Sonny, one of her horses, to Hiller for the day. Carol Hinshaw, Craig's wife, helped in teaching about horses as well. Many of the students had never seen a live horse and were full of questions such as "are the feet made of wood?" or "are the boy horses dark colored and the girl horses light?" The children fed Sonny apples and carrots, petted his soft nose and sketched him. They also learned more about the different breeds of horses, how horses are transported, how they sleep and the different types of food that they like to eat. The children took practice rides on saddles, examined a variety of horseshoes and were able to experiment with bridles, halters, bits and lead ropes. They were so excited about this opportunity and very proud of their sketches of Sonny. Horses are so rarely seen in the city that a garbage truck stopped during its route to allow one of the workers to pet the horse that visited school! The weather was perfect and everyone had a fun and educational day at "Hiller Stables.”

HARTLAND IEA NEWS Newly Formed Hartland IEA High school and Middle School Teams Qualify for Regionals/Zone Semi-final Competitions! Soon after the end of the MIHA season, former coach of the Hartland Equestrian Team, Jennifer Groehn formed three teams to compete in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA). Although the teams were officially named Hartland IEA Equestrian Team, the middle school team also has Howell riders on the team. The High S c h o o l We s t e r n t e a m (33)
members include Skylar Welti, Tessa Brown, Natalie Schenck, Taylor Sturtevant and Kendra Hull. The High School English team includes Sarah Wallace, Skylar Welti, Tessa Brown and Michael Anderson. The Middle School English team was formed with Summer Brown, Kelsea Goulah, Kylie Carrothers, Michaela Carnevale and Carleigh O’Doherty. Kreig Cutter also joined the coaching staff. The IEA is a rapidly growing organization with over 3000 members, over 200 teams in 32 states across the country. The riders have the opportunity to show at beginner to advanced levels of riding depending on their experience. There is no need to own a horse as the mounts are provided at the shows, and are selected by a draw. Riders compete not only for individual points but for the team as well. This competition format is similar to the college equestrian t e a m s p r o g r a m , I n t e rcollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). The riders are also scouted by the NCAA colleges with riding programs and scholarships are available as well as through the association. This provides many unique opportunities for our young riders. For more information, go to www.rideiea.com. The Hartland IEA Teams traveled this winter to New York, Indiana and several Ohio locations to compete. It was a great experience and exciting for the kids, learning to compete on a totally unfamiliar horse in horsemanship, reining, English equitation and equitation over fences. The riders met and developed WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM
SADDLE UP! MAGAZINE NEWS BRIEFS camaraderie among the different riders at the competitions. Our teams regularly competed against other teams from Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Kentucky and Michigan. “I am so proud of all of our riders. They each took on the challenge and succeeded in developing their riding abilities to a new level. We are pleasantly surprised when we qualified all of our new teams for the semifinals. That is a great achievement,” said Coach Jennifer. The High School Western team qualified to move on to the Zone Semi-Final Competition in Wilmington, Ohio on March 19. Skylar Welti was High point earner and competed in both the horsemanship class as well as reining. The High School and Middle School English teams will compete in the regional show in Morehead, KY on March 5,6 in hopes they will qualify to move on to the next semi–final competition in Ohio. If successful, the national finals are being held this year in Maryland. Individuals who garnered enough points to move ahead in the individual rider part of the competition include Sarah Wallace in English equitation and over fences, Skylar Welti in horsemanship, reining, English equitation and over fences, Taylor Sturtevant in horsemanship and Kylie Carrothers in over fences. The Hartland IEA Team is actively seeking interested coaches/instructors and interested riders for the next season 2011-2012. The season runs from approximately September to April. 2011-12 AAI AWARDS The Animal Agriculture Initiative (AAI) at Michigan State University has announced the recipients of project funding for 20112012. The AAI awarded a total of $314,774 divided between seven projects. The Animal Agriculture Initiative is Michigan's animal agriculture research, teaching and Extension initiative housed at MSU. It is a partnership between MSU, livestock producers and industry organizations, and the Michigan Department of Agriculture. Its objective is to address challenges facing Michigan animal-based agriculture through research and Extension projects. The AAI at MSU is vital to the health of Michigan's economy. A survey commissioned by the AAI in 2007 reveals that nearly $22.9 million in annual economic activity can be linked back to the initiative. AAI-funded research adds $11.5 million annually to the state's economy, and for every state tax dollar invested in the AAI, the initiative returns $3.40 in gross state product. Tw e n t y- t h r e e p r o j e c t proposals requesting nearly $1.13 million in funding were submitted for consideration by the Animal Agriculture Initiative Coalition, a group that provides program direction to AAI research and Extension projects involving (34)
the state's beef, dairy, equine, poultry, sheep and swine industries. The group also works with various industry advisory committees to help establish research priorities for improving Michigan animal agriculture. The AAI Coalition is made up of representatives from the MSU departments of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics; Animal Science; Biosystems and Ag. Engineering; Crop and Soil Sciences; Food Science and Human Nutrition; and Large Animal Clinical Sciences (College of Vet. Med.); AgBioResearch and MSU Extension. Janice Swanson, interim chairperson of the MSU Dept. of Animal Science, director of animal welfare and director of the AAI Coalition, emphasized the strength of the research proposals received for consideration and the significance of funding these projects to the agriculture industry. “Though research priorities are ever-increasing, available funding resources continue to decline,” she explained. “The AAI grants allow our faculty to conduct projects that directly benefit Michigan agriculture or to conduct pilot studies crucial to securing extramural funding for comprehensive research." Proposals were ranked on the basis of how well they addressed the issues identified as high priority by industry groups, MSU Extension program teams and the AAI Coalition. More than 200 research projects have been funded by the AAI since the initiative was established in 1996 as part of the grass-roots-driven Revitalization of Animal Agriculture in MI Initiative. This year it will be held at 7pm Smith Hall, St. Johns, MI. This former railroad corridor will be a 41 mile multi-use trail with a separate equestrian path. This is the only section allowing horses out of the entire 125 miles connecting Alma, Greenville, Lowell, Ionia to Owosso. It will be DNR owned, managed by the Mid-West Trail Authority and assisted by the various Fred Meijer Friends of the Grand Valley Rail Trail groups. The design process is done and acquisition of funding is occurring. The importance of equine interest cannot be understated after years of trying to be included. If you think you will ride this trail, be part of its development - attend this meeting. Our annual meeting and auction was held Feb. 5 with a very good turn out of over 80 folks. We had a wonderful potluck-thanks to all who brought food. Danny and Rex with their friend Ken sang and played cowboy songs. We held the annual meeting with Park Manager Tim Machowcitz speaking. mortality policy is also a flat fee, but costs less than adding a major medical endorsement simply because major medical covers more. Let's say your young stallion prospect injures his leg at the breeding farm and requires radiographs and sutures. These expenses are typically covered under major medical, but they would not be covered if you only had a surgical endorsement. The odds are much greater that an owner will have a major medical or surgical claim, than a mortality claim, so it often makes financial sense to purchase such coverage. Both major medical and surgical usually have a small deductible per claim, and both pay only to a specified limit per policy year, typically $5,000 or $7,500. Insurance companies differ in what they offer. Be sure to carefully read the policy so that you understand what the
Building a Partnership with Your Horse
EQUINE INSURANCE By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 The decision to insure your horse is a personal one. It will depend on many factors — among them are: the horse's value and replacement cost, the type of activities you plan to do with him, and the cost of the insurance. Some people feel that buying insurance is unnecessary and is just paying the insurance company on the chance that something will happen to your horse. While no insurance policy can replace a beloved equine partner, I feel it is a prudent expense that a new horse owner should carefully consider. It can offset financial losses from replacement costs in cases of catastrophic loss and the accompanying veterinarian bills, if you have major medical as well as mortality. As with human insurance, there are different types of policies for horses. The least expensive option for “bare bones” equine insurance is Restricted Perils, (also referred to as Specified Perils or Limited Perils). This policy only covers death by wind, fire and/or smoke, lightning, and collision or overturn in vehicular transit. Full Mortality provides the most coverage and is recommended if you cannot afford to replace the horse. Also referred to as All Risk coverage, Full Mortality is a “death benefit” policy that covers death due to accidents, fire, lightning, sickness, disease, transportation, humane destruction (if recommended by a veterinarian), and theft. Death due to any cause, except for willful neglect or destruction, is covered. Full Mortality is typically required
if money is owed on a horse. Value is usually established as the price you paid for him. Some insurance companies will allow for appreciation in the horse's value based on show ring or breeding success. However, as a horse's value increases, so do the premiums for insurance. Coverage for Full Mortality includes all locations within the United States, so you don't need to tell your agent if a horse is moved from one farm to another. Just make sure that managers or trainers are aware that the horses are insured and give them the necessary contact info on whom to notify should a horse become ill or injured. However, if a horse is shipping to Europe, prior notification must be given in order to extend coverage and to include the overseas flight. A Major Medical endorsement can be added to a Full Mortality policy to cover certain medical expenses. Major Medical pays for the medical costs of treatment your veterinarian deems necessary, including surgery. As with human insurance policies, there are some exclusions as to what is covered, and there is a deductible per claim, not per year. Typically, companies limit the amount of payout per horse to about $7,500 per policy year. Major Medical policies are purchased at a flat rate, as opposed to Full Mortality coverage, which is based on value of the insured horse. A Surgical endorsement can also be added to a Full Mortality policy and applies strictly to invasive surgery, such as that needed for some colic situations. Adding a surgical endorsement to your

policy covers and requires of you as the horse's owner. While it pays to “shop around” for equine insurance, be sure you are dealing with a reputable company that has a proven record of service. Asking a trusted equine professional for their recommendation on a provider is a great place to start your search. Selecting equine insurance requires doing your homework and then applying common sense to make your choice. You are dealing with a written document that is binding, and you must make sure you understand all “the fine print” before you sign on with any insurance company. circus animals. The Spookl e s s Pa r a d e C D h a s desensitizing big cat and elephant sounds that are a big help when played at home for a couple of weeks before exposure in a parade. We also put Vicks Vapor Rub in the horses' nostrils and around the nose so that they cannot smell exotic animals. Some people in parades such as the Great Circus parade keep their horses in a quiet spot away from the wagons with the exotic animals, but this is not always the case. I think that a horse's reaction to strange sights depends on desensitization, as well as a calm attitude of the rider and the bond that has been established between horse and rider beforehand. I would think twice about riding a horse in a parade that I had not spent some quality time riding. Many televised parades now require a banner identifying your group. Choose lettering large enough to be seen on the screen. We chose blue and white, as twenty years ago it was the most readable on screen. Some televised parades will not allow a logo, other than one belonging to your farm, or a website address. Check with the parade you wish to ride in before going through the expense of having a sign
PARADE RIDING TIPS By Nancy Harm www.HarmonyAcresParadeHorses.com
With spring around the corner and the 2011 Parade Season starting, Harmony Acres is getting ready to begin their nineteenth year of riding in some of the country's largest parades. The group has participated in close to 500 parades including America's Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast live to millions of homes across the country, Milwaukee's famous Great Circus Parade, Toledo's Holiday Parade and many others in the Midwest. Three horses from the original group are still going strong and continue to be ridden in parades as well as one added the second year. Our horses were all junior horses age three to five years at the beginning. We are part of the Natural Horseman Movement and take the best advice that fits our program from a number of clinicians. Establishing leadership, movement, approach and retreat are techniques that we use before even thinking about parades. Once basics are established, all of our horses go through a desensitization process before riding in parades including listening to Spookless Sound Cond-
itioning CDs, walking over bridges, paver bricks, tarps, hoses, rubber mats painted with clown face designs, white PVC pipes simulating highway lines, pom poms stuck in rubber cones, and an automatic bubble machine path of bubbles. The horses also walk around and stand under flags, wind socks, blow-up pool toys to simulate parade giant balloons, firecrackers, kick giant balls, and walk past people opening/closing umbrellas and shaking newspapers. These are not the only objects that parade horses may be exposed to, but a process called stimulus generalization allows horses to think “that's just another harmless thing like we see at home!” Last summer, I started my 2010 foals at two months of age with this desensitizing program and they were walking through the above described maze of “scary” objects as well as jumping up on a tall tractor tire filled with sand… all at LIBERTY by the end of the summer. Sometimes parade horses are exposed to experiences that you cannot completely prepare for at home such as elephants, lions, or other

made that you may not be able to use. Nowadays with high definition telecasting, color is not so much of a problem. A banner also helps to separate the horses from cub scouts on bicycles or other scary units, and gives the horses a familiar object to follow each time they participate. Our horses have been conditioned on their own to stop before they even receive the cue when they see the banner girls stop ahead of them. Clean up is required by nearly all parades. To minimize the need for clean up stops, we feed horses early on parade day and do not feed in the trailer on the way to a parade. Since our horses are turned out 24/7 at home and very easy keepers, we feed the minimum amount of grain which they eat on a variable schedule. Therefore, they are not expecting to be fed at a specific time and fretting because we are waiting in staging or actually riding in a parade at a specific meal time. We always bring a cooler of barn water from home and offer the horses a drink before putting their bridles on. If there is grass in the staging area we stretch the horses and ask if they need to empty their bladders before a parade. Usually all three will do so on cue.
For manure clean up in the parade we find that a plastic tub in a wheeled cart is handier than a wheel barrel and easiest to haul. The tub can be decorated with bows, pumpkins or stars. Often the cleanup crew gets as much TV air time as the riders, so we costume the two people on this detail, too. If young people are embarrassed to do this in their home town, disguise them in clown makeup. Clowns are always appropriate in a parade. We always arrive at the staging location early (one to two hours before step off time) and put out cones and yellow caution tape around our prep area if horses are not staged in a separate staging location. Tape and cones are safety measures that keep curious people not familiar with the nature of horses from wandering into your area. After getting horses tacked and ready, we keep them together standing quietly, rather than wandering off or scattered about. This is especially important if you are introducing a young or new horse to the unit. There is security in the herd. We always have an escort on each side of our horses to watch for potential hazards and alert riders to such things as slippery antifreeze or oil leaks from antique cars. Escorts are also on alert for children who may dash out to pet horses. Escorts that know your horses can also be a big help if a horse hesitates to cross a railroad track, drawbridge or some other unfamiliar footing. Grooming is important to parade presentation. In the summer, horses are bathed, their tails conditioned and braided, hooves trimmed and polished. Do not forget fly spray in the summer! Also, do not wear perfumes which can attract bees in summer parades.
In the winter, horses are vacuumed and spot cleaned. The tips of white tails are washed and towel dried. Legs may be washed with warm water and towel dried. It seems like rain or snow has been predicted in nearly half of the parades we are scheduled to ride in. Our policy is to go and be prepared to ride unless there is a thunderstorm, severe weather warnings or icy footing. Many times we have arrived while it is raining, or snowing even, tacked up under our trailer canopy, put
people or horses’ names are unusual. I include a color photo of the costumes our unit will be appearing in. This will help the commentator to identify us if the parade has no shows that did not get sent to them. Costuming for parades is an area that presents many opportunities for creativity among different units. We started out in parades by highlighting the Arabian horse’s versatility since we had show outfits in Western, Hunt and Native costumes and nothing matching. Later,
on horse raincoats that we secure against wind with elastic type belly bands, and been relieved to have the rain/snow stop, pavement dry up, and enjoyed a great ride. If you commit to be in a televised parade for which announcer scripts have been prepared ahead of time, a “no show” on your part is likely to be a reason for not being given a second chance. The main point is that you need to be prepared for the weather before you end up getting caught in it. Most parades require a commentary with an application. Provide phonetic pronunciation if
we borrowed and sewed outfits to fit the themes of Victorian and Polish parades. Presently, we have expanded our costume collection to have several matching saddle blankets, vests, and jackets in Patriotic and neutral colors. We have also expanded over the years to include authentic Arab, Mexican, and Polish costumes. For a new group starting out, a bright color is even more dramatic than crystals or sequins and can be used to coordinate a group by having matching saddle pads, shirts or vests, and scarves. You can also get heat transfer crystals and put some bling in outfits that you

already have at home. I have done this to leather jackets and chaps that we use and it does make an eye catching difference. Anyone working with horses should remember there is always some danger involved in horse training for both your horse and you. We all know that horses can cause serious injuries. Use common sense and do not attempt any suggestions outside your experience and comfort level. The information in this article is intended to demonstrate training methods and helpful tips that work for us. You must be responsible for using it safely. If you are not comfor table with your abilities or experience, seek advice or assistance from a professional horse trainer. The last piece of advice I have is to do your preparation homework and have fun! A note from the author: In 2010 we adopted four horses needing homes (including two foals) and it is our plan to get the two horses old enough for saddle training to participate in some parades in 2011. Therefore, we have openings for new people to join our group willing to put time in the saddle and training for parades. People interested in joining us must like Arabian horses, be fifteen years of age or older, be willing and interested in using Natural Horsemanship Methods, have a secure seat, and time to get some riding time on them. This is a great opportunity for someone that loves working and training young horses. It may be even better for someone not able to own one right now. I provide all the horses, tack, and costumes for our unit’s performances in parades. If interested, contact Nancy at nharm@chartermi.net or call 248-437-5672. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

So in the example at the bottom of the page, we will have met the protein requirement of a mature horse at 11.17%. However this diet will not meet the protein requirement of a lactating broodmare. We can address this specific protein deficiency several different ways: 1) sourcing a higher protein grain (ie: Life Design Mare & Foal 16% Protein); 2) sourcing a higher-protein hay (i.e.: Grass/Alfalfa Mix or Alfalfa); or 3) increasing the amount of grain or hay fed in the total diet. Hay protein can vary dramatically from one cutting to the next, and from one field to the next. Rainfall, stage of growth when harvested, and a variety of other factors can also influence the quality of the hay. Alfalfa hays are typically considered to be higher protein than timothy or other grass hays, however if alfalfa is harvested late, perhaps due to weather concerns that make it tough to get in the field, it can have lower proteins than some grass hays that are harvested at the proper time. It is always a
HOW DOES YOUR HAY STACK UP? Part I: Protein in the Equine Diet By Nutrena • www.horsefeedblog.com Horses of all ages require adequate amounts of protein for maintenance, growth, reproduction and work. Growth and reproduction are the most critical time period, for protein in the diet. Proteins are impor tant building blocks for body cells and a major component of muscle, hair, skin, milk production, growth and reproduction. Inadequate levels of protein in the diet can impair or stunt any or all of these areas of horse health and growth. Protein in your grain: horse owners can name the protein level of the feed they are currently using. “A 12% sweet feed” is a common answer when asked this question – but how important is that protein percentage? While the total protein in the horses' diet is important, horses actually require essential amino acids, even though crude protein is what is required by law to be listed in a guaranteed analysis. Amino Acids can best be described as the building blocks of proteins or “the horse, protein rode in on.” Today many feed manu f a c t u re r s a re m o v i n g towards listing the amino acids on the tag, which can help horse owners to identify the quality of the protein
sources being used in their feed. For the sake of keeping it simple, we'll consider only the crude protein for the feeding example shown below. Protein in your Hay: beyond the grain portion of the diet, one major factor to watch regarding protein is the hay source. After all, hay makes up the majority of the diet (or should), and thus a lot of the protein is coming from the hay source. In order to truly understand the protein in our hay, we need to have a hay test done (more information on FREE hay testing below)- for instance the average grass hay can range anywhere between 6.94%-14.74% crude protein (Equi-Analytical Laboratories, 2/08/11). Figuring out what your hay source is providing is essential to determining what your horse is ACTUALLY consuming in the total diet. Listed below are protein percentages required by the major categories of horses – please note that these are for the TOTAL DIET, not just the grain portion.
good idea to know the facts behind your hay source rather than “guesstimating”. So, “How Does Your Hay Stack Up?” A final point that must be made about protein: Increased protein levels are not generally responsible for a “hot” horse. Protein is a very inefficient source of energy, and its main use in a mature horse is the rebuilding of muscle and other body cells after exercise. Instead, it is the starch and sugars in a horse's diet, as well as the calorie intake to calories used (exercise level) ratio, that are primarily responsible for a “hot” horse. But that's a whole other topic in itself. Watch for our next article in April titled “How Does Your Hay Stack Up”- Evaluating hay quality & fiber in the equine diet, as we continue this two-part series on “How Your Hay Stacks Up”. Check (www.horsefeedblog.com) for more information OR (www.nutrenainfo.com/hay) to find out how to get your hay tested for FREE! Brought to you by Nutrena, www.horsefeedblog.com.
Decoding Protein in the Equine Diet Crude Protein (CP) - the total protein in the sample including true protein and non-protein nitrogen. Proteins are organic compounds composed of amino acids. They are a major component of vital organs, tissue, muscle, hair, skin, milk and enzymes. Protein is required on a daily basis for maintenance, lactation, growth and reproduction.
• Foals: 16-18% • Weanlings: 14-16% • Yearlings: 12-14% • Mature horses: 10-12% • Lactating mares: 12-14%
To figure out the total protein in your horse’s diet, follow this simple calculation:
Amino Acids (AA) - organic nitrogen containing compounds that serve as the building blocks of protein.
((Lbs. Hay x Hay Protein)+(Lbs. Grain x Grain Protein))/Total Lbs. Feed = Protein in Total Diet
Lysine (Lys) - an indispensable amino acid required for growth in the young horse.
Diet Example - Average 1,000 Lb. Horse is Fed: 15 lbs of Grass Hay (11% Crude Protein) per day and 3 lbs of Nutrena SafeChoice (14% Crude Protein) per day
Average Crude Protein (CP): Grass Hay: 6.94-14.75% Alfalfa Hay:18.59-23.95%
((15 lbs X 11) + (3 lbs X 14)) / 18 lbs = 11.17% protein/day ©2011 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MARCH 2011

Sept. 11th: Clinic 1-4 pm ~ Preparing Your Horse to Drive 102 We will go over all the details to find out if you have a horse that is suitable to be your next driving horse & we’ll go over the safe steps to get it ready to hook.
1. When making initial contact with a photographer take time discussing your vision, objectives and options to make the session a success. What is the purpose of this session? Is it for HS senior pictures, advertising or farm promotion? Obviously you will need to be more prepared for a session of conformation, action shots of your stallion, or sale horses than if you want candid and casual mare and foal or pasture type shots. Also think about the time of day, season, weather and growth spurts in your horse.

2. Before your actual session take a look around the property and scout out some locations that you like. This is a good time to remove clutter. Keep in mind that when looking for a possible spot, that you will want the sun at the photographers back. The time of day will be set up between you and your photographer, but know that direct overhead lighting during the day is very poor. Choose a location that is familiar to your horse.
MOORE’S MONTHLY HORSE & TACK AUCTION 1st Saturday of each month starting at 6pm with tack, horses to follow
3. Don't forget about the importance of clothing, make sure that you are dressed in solid colors that compliment your companion without distracting logos or designs. Depending on the type of session or the use of the photos, your attire could be formal riding, western riding wear, or everyday cloths that represent you. Suggestions: Light colored complexionwear dark colors such as dark tan, browns, grays, dark greens, dark blues, etc. Dark

colored complexions- wear colors such as light tan, light brown, light greens, light blues, etc. Stay away from yellow! 4. Your horse(s) should be well groomed, clipped and any tack you plan to use clean. Your halter, lead rope and bridle should be well fitting and compliment both your horse and your clothing. A simple leather halter is best. Last minute touch ups on your horse may include fly spray, hoof black, grease on the face, show sheen, mane and tail brush out and a rub down with a regular cotton towel works wonders. 5. It is always nice to have an extra assistant on hand to help you get your horse properly positioned, depending on the type of shoot you are doing, and keeping the horse's ears alert. Your photographer will be carrying props to help keep the ears alert, but if you have something that you know works, have this ready, too. 6. Make sure that your subjects have had a good meal and that no other stressful or distracting events will be happening that day. A happy horse will be more alert and cooperative. This is also true for you the handler, so keep a happy and relaxed attitude because this will be reflected in your final product. 7. Most impor tantly… remember to relax, have fun and trust your photographer to capture those special moments! WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Note from the Editor: I was saddened to hear that yet another equine related business will no longer be providing their services to the equine community. The Equine Times had published their pages for almost 25 years. They were a long standing source of information for horse lovers in Michigan and Ohio, plus surrounding states, and I had the utmost respect for them. They will be missed by the horse community. I want our readers to know that even though we have been having mailing difficulties, Saddle Up! Magazine remains strong and will be published for many years to come. I want to personally thank our readers for hanging on while we are working out our mailing problems. I feel confident that these troubles will be resolved shortly. Our magazine is always online on the first of the month, so if you don’t want to wait for “snail mail”, visit us at www.saddleupmag.com for the full issue. Amy is an amazing and talented lady to whom I owe a great deal. She runs the office, does all the invoicing, manages all customer relations, handles all emails and even designs ads! Wow...do I even need to work anymore? Amy has been with Saddle Up! Magazine for TEN YEARS on March 12, 2011! Poor girl, she has to work on her anniversary. Please wish Amy a happy anniversary at our booth at the MHC Stallion Expo in East Lansing this year. She loves to meet our customers face to face and visit with everyone. Of course, I will be there too, but nobody asks for me. As some of you know, my husband and I also own Cindy Lou’s Zoo in Roscommon, Michigan. We are working hard to get everyone healthy and happy and to bring the grounds back to their original condition. I am happy to announce that Laddie, our 36 year old Missouri Fox Trotter looks great and is putting on some much needed weight. Thank you to everyone that has offered their assistance and for your generous donations. We appreciate your prayers and your help. Cindy Couturier, owner/editor Saddle Up! Magazine
