MICHIGAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION

Horseback Riding Program This program, which rewards hours spent in the saddle, is similar to AQHA’s Horseback Riding Program, and is open to anyone who owns an American Quarter Horse. Three award levels are available for hours spent riding an American Quarter Horse: Bronze (150 hours) | Silver (200 hours) | Gold (300+ hours) A year-end award for participants achievement level will be given at the Annual MQHA Convention in January. A top Youth and a top Adult award will also be given each program year. The idea behind the program is to encourage AQHA owners to ride their horses, and to ride them often. The program also provides a venue for AQHA owners to be involved in the state affiliate even if they don’t show, or no longer show. The MQHA Horseback Riding Program is an annual program. To participate in the program, riders must be a current member of the MQHA. A $35 registration fee is also required for the Horseback Riding Program. Download forms at www.miquarterhorse.com or call (616) 225-8211 for more information.

Peggy Brown

Level IV Advanced Centered Riding & Driving Instructor Instructor Of The Year, Original Presenter of Anatomy In Motion: The Visible Horse and Anatomy In Motion: The Visible Rider Peggy Brown has created a visual lesson for all riders. Wearing a custom-painted “skeleton suit,” Peggy shows how the rider’s body works when riding in dynamic balance (balance in motion) with the horse at all gaits, in English and Western Riding and Jumping. This “inside view” clearly shows when a rider is straight, balanced, and using their body well. It’s also easy to see what happens when Peggy demonstrates common riding faults and how they affect the horse and rider. Many riders (and their instructors!) recognize their own habits and can see how common riding problems can be addressed by understanding how the body works. Seeing is believing!

Spatial issues are huge with horses of any age. Just because the foal is young and cute, doesn't mean he can't run you down or kick your teeth out. Often, when inexperienced people are raising foals, big mistakes are made early on and the behaviors are wellengrained in the horse, long before the person has an appreciation for the scope of the problem. Foals love to be rubbed and scratched and will quickly learn to lean and push on you to get your attention. Next thing you know, you have a horse that pushes you around and has learned to lean into pressure instead of move away from it. Those are bad traits when you're riding a horse. Because young horses are very oral by nature (constantly exploring their environment with their nose, lips and tongue), biting can be a big problem when handling youngsters. There's a progressive set of behaviors in horses in which lipping behavior (when the horse puts his lips on you and nuzzles) leads to nipping (a small quick pinch with the teeth) leads to biting (the most aggressive and deadly behavior of horses). These are all progressive signs of dominance leading to aggression. If the lipping behavior goes unchecked, the horse begins to nip and if the nipping goes unchecked, he begins to bite. As the horse goes through this progressive behavior, he is simply testing his boundaries. Just as with human toddlers that test out biting, this behavior should be “nipped in the bud,” as early as possible in the progression. It has been my experience that people bring these behaviors on themselves by allowing horses to be in their space and by nuzzling, smooching and playing with the horse's muzzle all the time. In the herd setting, there is a “linear hierarchy” which means that each and every individual of the herd is either dominant over or subordinate to each and every other individual. This means that between you and your horse, one of you'll be

Off To A Good Start By Julie Goodnight Are you raising a foal or young horse? Make sure you're setting up a good relationship with respect from the start. To start your young relationship off on the right path, you'll need to consider how a young horse thinks and envision how you want your horse to act later in life. All that training starts now. Your expectations must be clear and you must set about systematically to teach the horse what you think of as “good” behavior. In his young world, good behavior includes kicking, biting and running hell-bent for leather in any direction he pleases. That's not how you want your young horse to act, so start teaching the new rules soon. Horses know how to act like horses; that's it. If we want them to act in certain non-horsey ways when we handle them, they have to be taught the proper response. We call that horse training. However, in the horse's herd, he learns in the first days of life to recognize dominant horses and dominant behavior. He learns to respect authority and respect the space of others. He has trouble with the latter, even in the herd, so he gets spanked regularly (by kind but firm “aunties”). Because of this, young horses can be easily taught to respect your space and follow the rules. They can also be easily taught the opposite if mishandled. I am not a big fan of over-handling baby horses. I've seen too many foals become insensitive spoiled monsters with many bad habits that must be “untrained.” And I've seen how easily and quickly you can train 2 or 3 year olds that have never been handled; who have no preconceived notions about people. But, if you are going to handle young horses, there are basic manners and expectations of behavior that they should learn early on.

(248) 887-4829 Jim Moule 1130 Tipsico Lk. Rd. Milford, MI 48380

the dominant leader and one of you'll be the subordinate follower in your “herd of two.” It's best to set this pattern early on in the relationship you are developing with your young horse. If you establish basic rules of behavior (respect my space at all times, follow my lead, stop when I stop and stand still when I ask) and you correct him 100% of the time he makes an infraction, he will learn these important ground manners quickly. Also, any time any part of his body moves toward you, vigorously back him out of your space, so he learns where your space begins and ends. This will help him to learn to keep a respectful and safe distance from you and to be respectful of your space. If you are raising a young horse or even retraining an older horse that missed out on learning good manners, it's important to know what your expectations of his behavior are so that you can set clear rules and boundaries. If you're not certain what your expectations should be, get some help. You only have one chance to make a good first impression on your horse. Doing it right from the beginning may be critical in your horse's success later in life. You have to be the leader and the enforcer and not coddle, cuddle or condone. When he is a teenager with 800 pounds of exuberance, you'll be glad you did. Contact Julie Goodnight at 800-225-8827 for more information.

Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs ACTHA Nears 500 Events “Call it low gas prices, our move to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, or simply the hard work of our staff, but in an unprecedented month of January 2015, we are closing in on confirmed bookings of 500 events for 2015. Most of them happening in the first half of the calendar year. Not only does our projection of 1,000 events for the current competitive year become conservative, I hesitate to forecast 2015 attendance and event numbers … it's simply hard to believe.” So states American Competitive Trail Horse Association's (ACTHA) new President Robin Tilghman. “ACTHA has implemented new support systems to keep up with the growth. A major one having been implemented this week. A host support call in center “womaned” 13 hours per day 7 days per week,“live,” to both receive calls and to make outgoing quality control calls,” stated Tom Scrima, outgoing General Manager and new CEO of the American Competitive Trail Horse Association, a 501(c) (3) Not For Profit Corporation. Now in their 7th year, you are invited to learn more about ACTHA at www.actha.us. Sponsor enquiries are warmly welcomed at support@actha.us or call 877-99-ACTHA.

meetings, workshops, and conferences in areas such as agriculture, horticulture, and natural resources. Workshops being offered this year will explore a wide array of animal topics. One of the many locations hosting ANR Week sessions is Anthony Hall. ANR Week participants can explore topics such as equine education or producing sheep and goat products on small farms. The MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education will also host various animal-related programs during the week. Rabbit and cavy judges from around the country will conduct seminars in addition to the rabbit school and show taking place at the pavilion. Classroom CD will serve as this year's location where participants will learn how to do poultry and gamebird blood tests for Pullorum disease. There will also be various horse activities taking place March 1315 at the pavilion. Over 200 vendor booths and dozens of horse-related clinics, seminars and educational events will be offered. For 100 years, the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), MSU Extension and MSU AgBioResearch have welcomed visitors to ANR Week. equestrians will participate in the event. These equestrians will be 11-19 years old. On Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8, the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) will hold two youth Western Competitions in which 21 teams from Ohio, Illinois Indiana, and Kentucky will be invited to participate. Competition will take place from 9am to 3pm each day. In addition, an IEA Hunt Seat Riding Demonstration will be held on Sunday. While the competitions are open to the public for viewing, registration will only be available to current IEA members. All equestrian events will take place the Cooper Arena at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. "We are extraordinarily excited to participate in the Arnold Classic," said Roxane Lawrence co-founder and executive director of the IEA. "This is further validation and recognition that these young people, who ride horses, are indeed wonderful athletes. It is also special because the IEA was started here in Columbus." Founded in 2002, the IEA was organized to promote and improve the quality of equestrian competition and instruction available to middle and secondary school students. Its purpose is to set minimum standards for competition, provide information concerning the creation and development of school associated equestrian sport programs, and to generally promote the common interests of safe riding instruction and competition and education on matters related to equestrian competition at the middle and secondary school levels. Unique to the IEA, there is no need to own a horse. Mounts and tack are supplied to each rider at every IEA event. The IEA currently has over 11,000

USPC Partnership Located in the Ash Woods of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., near the Korean War Memorial, the current U.S. Park Police stables and building are outdated and no longer meet the needs of the Park Police. The United States Pony Clubs, Inc., was invited to partner with The Trust for the National Mall to assist the efforts to provide design ideas and considerations for the new and upgraded stabling for the horses of the U.S. Park Police Mounted Unit. Once completed, the new U.S. Park Police Stables and facilities will become a principle destination on the National Mall. The new and improved stables will also WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs serve as an educational facility to host tours, school field trips, and educational programs for all ages. Pony Club Members at the HB level or higher were encouraged to submit stable building plans for consideration by The Trust for the National Mall. The creators of the designs were awarded the Certificate of Design Excellence by The Trust for the National Mall: Ani Blair (Deep South Region), Ella Rak (Virginia Region), Jane Thomas (Sunshine Region), Kiersti Wylie (Southern California Region), Kurtis Monahan (Eastern Pennsylvania Region), and Nila Venkat (Middle California Region). “I want to thank the United States Pony Clubs members for collaborating with the Trust for the National Mall to raise awareness about a project on the National Mall that is dear to our hearts, to support the US Park Police mounted unit and rebuild the Horse Stables that are currently located just south of the Reflecting Pool. The National Mall is the home of our History, Heroes and Hope. The men and women of the mounted unit are truly our Heroes. We are proud of the work they do with horses and that makes us even more committed to provide them with a healthy, functioning and well-designed environment to work in. “The Pony Club members represent the future and therefore they are the Hope. USPC members have given us the greatest gift - A vision for what the new stables can and should be. We are simply in awe of the talent, the focus, vision, and commitment to excellence that they brought to the task,” stated Teresa Durkin, Senior Project Director and Representative of the Trust for the National Mall. Difficult Run Pony Club took a

more hands-on approach to assist with the Park Police Stables. Members headed to the Police Barns, accompanied by Mariann Payne from the Trust for the National Mall. They listened to a presentation from the United States Park Police Mounted Unit, led by Sergeant Mark Schuette, learning about the history of the mounted police, the workings of a police stable, and about being mounted officers in a very urban area. After the presentation, the group headed out for a service workday to pest-proof the feed room, move hay, and help with chores around the stables. The Trust for the National Mall is a nonprofit organization founded in 2007 dedicated to restoring, improving, and preserving the National Mall. Phase I of the first approved park project, Constitution Gardens, will begin in 2015 with the restoration of the Historic Lockkeeper's House. Go to nationalmall.org for more information.

Saddle Fit Expert To Be Major Presenter at Expos “A fervent curse upon the man who invented the American saddle. There is no seat to speak of about it--one might as well sit in a shovel--and the stirrups are nothing but an ornamental nuisance.” Mark Twain, Hawaii Saddle fit professional Carmi Weininger is traveling to U.S. horse expos to relieve both horse and rider of the curse Twain aptly described. Over the length of the MHC Stallion Exhibition and Trade Show, March 13-15, and the Equine Affaire, Ohio, April 9-12, English and Western riders will learn about: Basic Saddle Fit, Saddle

Myth Busting, Fit for Rider - No Matter Your Conformation, and Saddle Fitting with Science: the Use of Tools to Verify Saddle Fit. Weininger is available for scheduled interviews at both the Michigan Expo in East Lansing, MI, and Equine Affaire in Columbus, OH, and by phone. Based in Northern California, Weininger is known across the U.S. as an educator and innovative thinker on the subject of saddle fitting. She serves as a regular guest lecturer in Functional Anatomy at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, and has been a guest writer for national magazines on the subject of saddle fit. She has lectured alongside renowned author/coach, Mary Wanless, and the founding member of the Association for Equine Sports Medicine, Dr. Kerry Ridgway. She has personally saddled horses ranging from Grand Prix dressage horses to members of the USEF Endurance Team. “I am committed to putting more science and less guesswork into the fitting process. That science should be based on solid, up-todate conformation, anatomy and bio-mechanics knowledge, and modern tools to assess fit. All horses should have well-fitting saddles. “Further, I believe that the right saddle can be a therapeutic tool to enhance a horse's successful recovery from many obvious and even 'mysterious' physical problems by changing the weightdistribution pattern of the saddle based on the horse's issues.” Since 2000, Weininger has owned and operated RP Saddle Company which produces saddles for endurance, dressage, hunter/jumper, eventing, fox hunting and pleasure riding. Fellow Non-Profits Get Free Ride Now in their 8th year, American Competitive Trail Horse Assoc. (ACTHA) opens the door wide for all fellow non-profits in the equine industry. Free memberships await those who work full time or assist part time in and for a registered nonprofit equine concern. “The process is pretty simple,” states Andrew McNeill, who heads up customer support at WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs ACTHA. “Any equine non-profit may call 877-99-ACTHA or write support@actha.us and I issue the appropriate memberships. A full annual membership for full timers and a 30 day complimentary membership for part timers. The head of the non-profit need only call and submit their list. What better way to usher in the commencement of ACTHA's 8th year of serving th equine of America?” The offer is good for the next 60 days or the first 50 non-profits that contact ACTHA, whichever happens first. ACTHA has begun 2015 with an unprecedented 500 events already booked for the year. If this rate continues, over 100,000 rider entries will happen in 2015. That represents a lot of new horse jobs, and that is what empties the rescues for good. “Am I busy? Oh yeah, but I wouldn't have it any other way,” concludes Mr. McNeill. ACTHA welcomes all horses whatever breed or grade. None is more special than the rescue, whatever their life story may be. Over 1,400 of the over 28,000 ACTHA registered equines in ACTHA are certified as coming from the rescue environment. More amazing is that more than 400 have gone on to win very prestigious performance awards. One such award was originated and inspired by ACTHA sponsor Mountain Horse USA. Called the Diamond In The Rough medal, this performance medal earns the horse and it's rider a wonderful medal and an amazingly beautiful top of the line Mountain Horse jacket (MSRP over $150). Cavallo Horse and Rider has continued the effort for the past year, and thanks to both companies, ACTHA has enough monogrammed inventory for years to come. Sponsor inquiries are welcomed

AHC Time to Ride Challenge Incentives offered to introduce newcomers to horses and grow the industry. The Time to Ride Challenge returns in 2015 as a grassroots campaign to grow the horse industry by introducing new enthusiasts to horse activities. The Challenge, taking place May 30 to September 30, 2015, offers a unique opportunity for horse professionals to grow their business while competing for $100,000 in cash and prizes. In 2014, its inaugural year, the Challenge provided more than 25,000 people with first-time horse experiences through 702 beginner-friendly Time to Ride Hosts in 49 states. Registration for the Challenge will begin March 1 at timetoride challenge.com and is open to stables, clubs, veterinarians, feed stores, businesses, and organizations dedicated to welcoming newcomers to horse activities. “Hosts” are organized into Small, Medium, and Large divisions and are encouraged to be creative in providing fun, safe, and educational horse events that encourage attendees to become further involved in horse activities. The Hosts who provide the greatest number of newcomers an introductory horse experience, as calculated by contact information collected, will win awards. Industry statistics show that

current horse owners are an aging population, and identified parents with children as a prime audience to help them discover horses. Many of the stables held events to introduce children to horses and to offer parents information on how to get their families involved with riding. Medium division winner for 2014, Corvin Performance Horses, of Canyon, TX, partnered with homeschool groups, day cares, church groups, and other youth activities to bring horses to a new sector of the community. Their most successful event was a partnership with “I Heart Canyon,” hosted by the city, where more than 400 enthusiasts met a horse for the first time. Owner Melissa Corvin reported that the biggest reward was “giving people a positive first experience with horses and building their confidence. Kids were thrilled to touch and ride real horses.” Within one week of the event, six people called to sign up for lessons. Corvin Performance Horses reached 876 newcomers in 100 days and won $15,000 cash in the Medium division. Updates for 2015 include more cash prizes, with grand prize winners receiving $10,000 and cash awards given through tenth place in each division. The Challenge will also feature a completely redesigned website and improved user experience launching March 1. Participating Hosts will receive free marketing resources including a toolkit, guide of event ideas, customizable ads and posters, media templates, and more. Registration for the Challenge will be open March 1 to May 26, 2015. To learn more about the Challenge, please visit timeto ridechallenge.com or email info@timetoride.com. National Forest System Trails Stewardship Act New legislation calls for improved investments in the National Forest Trail System. Outdoor recreation and conservation groups including the Backcountry Horsemen of America (BCHA), The Wilderness Society, the American Horse Council (AHC), motorized recreation groups, outfitters and guides, expressed their support for congressional legislation that would improve access and public safety on national forests and better address the persistent, growing backlog for trail maintenance on public lands. The National Forest Trails System Stewardship Act of 2015, introduced today by Representatives Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Tim Walz (D-MN), would WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs keep more trails open and accessible by expanding the use of volunteer and partner organizations and providing increased focus on a handful of priority areas around the country. More than 50 diverse recreation and conservation groups requested the legislation after a 2013 Gov’t. Accountability Office study found the Forest Service (FS) trail system is being squeezed between the demands of growing public use and shrinking budgets. According to that report, the maintenance backlog for forest trails exceeds $314 million dollars and threatens to limit public access, harm natural resources, and increase future maintenance costs. “Improving safety and access in our national forests provides a significant return on investment for America,” said Paul Spitler, Director of Wilderness Camp-

aigns at The Wilderness Society. “These trails fuel a powerful outdoor economy and keep our public lands accessible for Americans. They are simply too important to lose. We applaud Reps. Lummis and Walz for their leadership on preserving and maintaining America's trails.” The USFS contains the largest network of trails in the world and receives roughly 165 million visitors a year. While more people than ever are heading into national forests in pursuit of exercise, relaxation, adventure, only 1/4 of all trails are maintained to standard. The trails backlog prevents public access, poses dangers to public safety, and degrades clean water. The BCHA says the effort to create a more robust and coordinated trails-focused volunteer program is essential to preserving American's access to the

great outdoors. “Congress recognizes that our national forest trail system is deteriorating,” said Jim McGarvey, Chairman of BCHA. “This bill emphasizes greater collaboration with volunteers and partner organization and seeks to leverage additional resources to augment the important role played by FS trail crews.” “The recreational horse industry contributes $32 billion a year to the economy and supports nearly 435,000 jobs nationwide,” said AHC VP of Gov’t. Relations Ben Pender-grass. “However, it is dependent on access to public lands and well maintained trails. The current FS trail maintenance backlog is a serious threat to its continued growth and health. This bill will help address the problem and ensure equestrians and all trail users continue to have access to trails on our national forests.”

In addition to expanding the use of volunteers, the legislation also requires the Secretary of Agriculture to identify 9 to 15 priority areas throughout the country for increased trail maintenance. Hiking groups also hailed the legislation. “We appreciate what the bill sets out to accomplish,” said Peter Olsen, VP at American Hiking Society. “The bill would significantly increase the role of partners and volunteers in maintaining trails throughout the national forests. During times of limited agency budgets, the role of volunteers is critical to ensuring Americans can continue to explore the great outdoors.” Contacts: Ben Pendergrass, AHC (202) 296-4031 Paul Spitler, The Wilderness Society (202) 360-1912 Jim McGarvey, Chairman BCHA (706) 669-1015

Keep Your 4-H Animal Projects Healthy in Cold Weather By Julie Thelen, MSU Extension As the winter temperatures settle in, make sure you are keeping your 4-H projects healthy! Most animals are well adapted to living outside, so for them the cold isn't as bad as it is to you or me. However, just like added heat in the summer, cold temperatures require additional animal monitoring. Follow these four steps to make sure your 4H projects are healthy this winter.

the issue and reacting to it are essential in keeping animals healthy and on track for market or reproduction. The temperature of the water can also play a role in animal production. One study from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine stated that ponies drank approximately 40 percent more water when it was warm, rather than ambient near-freezing water. No matter what the temperature, make sure the water you are providing your animals is clean and easily available in adequate amounts.

3. Know what is in your feed! Knowing the contents and the quality of the feed you are 1. Make sure animals have plenty of fresh air. offering to animals is essential in making Although it seems natural to close all of the sure they have adequate nutrition to meet barn doors in the winter, similar to how you their energy requirements. 4. Pay special attention to young and new animals. Just like young children, younger animals and especially newborn animals are more susceptible to the cold weather. When new animals are born, make sure they are dried off in a reasonable amount of time. Additionally, remember how crucial it is for animals to receive their first milk, colostrum. If transporting new animals to your farm, make sure you minimize the amount of stress they will encounter as well as provide adequate dry, minimal dust bedding to help reduce the effect of winter chill. Although it's cold outside, these good animal management strategies can help to keep your 4-H projects healthy and happy all winter long!

A Beginners Guide to Sewing Show Clothes

my needles at whatever sewing supply store I happened to be in. Unfortunately, I had problems with determining which needles fit my sewing machine. Also, I would be forced to purchase a packet of needles that contained the needle that I needed, but which also contained sizes that I would rarely, if ever, use. It was such a waste of money. I now purchase Organ brand sewing machine needles from Ken's Sewing Center in Alabama (www.kenssewingcenter.com). By signing up for their email newsletters, I am notified when there are specials or sales. I purchase large quantities of packets containing only the needles that I use the most. Please note that there are a large variety of sewing machine needles. Ball point needles are generally recommended for sewing on knits and Lycra™ blend fabrics. A sharp or universal needle is generally used for woven. A leather needle is specially designed for piercing leather and leaves a distinctive hole. Learn your machine and learn what works best for you. Cutting Table: You need a cutting table or area large enough to lay your fabric on for cutting. Although most of us will use our dining room tables, this causes back stress because it is not the correct height to work on. Sometimes the dining room table will also not be big enough to do a proper pattern layout. If you are going to be cutting fabric on a regular basis, invest in a real cutting table. The cutting area needs to be large enough that the fabric can lie, smoothly folded on the flat surface. The fabric, especially Lycra™, must not hang over any edge. This stretches the fabric and distorts the finished product. Interfacing: You will use a variety of interfacing while making your show clothing. There are fusible and nonfusible (sew-in) interfacings available. You will want a medium to medium heavy weight interfacing for collars and cuffs made from Lycra™. If you are using Ultra Suede™ or lambskin, you will need a slightly stiffer interfacing. Your fabric will determine whether you can use the fusible interfacing. Lycra™ does not take kindly to heat. However, if a lower setting is used on the iron, coupled with a slightly longer pressing time, then some fusible interfacing can be used on Lycra™ fabrics. You will have to experiment to determine whether your fabric is suitable for applying fusible interfacing. An excerpt from the book “Beginners Guide To Sewing Show Clothes”, Written by Pegg Johnson, Show Clothes Unlimited, Brown City, MI, 810-346-2305.

Chapter I: How Much To Pay Per Yard (cont.) Equipment Required: Clippers or Small (trim) Scissors: You may also wish to own a set of small “clipping” scissors. It doesn't matter if they are small scissors or whether they are the “squeeze” together clippers. They come in handy for clipping those long threads at the beginning of a seam. They are lighter weight, more maneuverable, and get into tighter places than standard scissors. Tape Measure: Use a good quality tape measure. Be aware that tape measures do stretch and wear out over time. Straight Pins: There are a variety of straight pins designed to be used with sewing. You will need to experiment to determine whether you like pins with “heads” or glass beads on them. You may prefer the standard straight pins. You will also develop a preference for the length of the pin being used. I prefer the silk pins with small glass bead heads. They slide through almost all materials with ease and can be used somewhat successfully on the lighter weight Ultra Suede™. Keep your pins sharp by using a pin cushion. Once a pin becomes discolored, dull or gets bent, dispose of it by placing it in an empty prescription bottle. When the bottle is full, cap it and dispose of it in the garbage. Never throw needles or pins directly into the garbage. Several townships have ordinances against this as it is a safety hazard to the people who handle our trash. Seam Ripper: As its name implies, this is used for ripping out the sewing mistakes that we make. Unless you have a very steady hand, opt for the traditional seam ripper style. There is a newer style that is curved and is as sharp as a razor blade. This is fine for cutting stitches, however it is very easy to slip and cut your fabric. Also, the blade is not protected and it is possible to cut yourself. You definitely do not want to have this type of seam ripper if you have children anywhere near your sewing area. Thread: For the most part, regular mercerized cotton thread will work on your sewing projects. If you find that you are getting excessive amounts of thread “fuzz”, then switch to a polyester thread. When you sew lambskin or leather, then you will need to have polyester thread. The tanning oils in the leathers destroy cotton thread. If your machine will handle it, carpet thread is also good for sewing the heavier leather used in making chaps. However, this is not a necessity. If you are sewing appliqués onto a project, some people prefer to use invisible thread. This thread is, as its name implies, invisible or see through. It is about the same consistency of a fine fishing line. And, like fishing line, it has “wirey” characteristics. It is hard to see to thread your machine and nearly impossible to tie off at the end of your sewing. If you do succeed in tying off the ends, the wearer of the shirt may complain about getting scratched or poked by the ends. So far, I have found no way to get around this problem. Rotary Cutter and Mat: Some seamstresses prefer to use a rotary cutter and mat when cutting out their patterns or projects. Some people (like me) don't possess the hand and eye coordination to do this. Others, like one gal who cuts for me, is a whiz at cutting patterns with the rotary. It is all in the “hand” of the person who cuts! Sewing Machine Needles: Over the years, I have developed a liking for one particular brand of sewing machine needle. I used to purchase ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MARCH 2015 (36)

PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING Building a Partnership with Your Horse

Western Dressage: Overcoming Nerves By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com 1-800-503-2824 “I really want to show, but I just get so nervous and insecure when I'm the only one in the ring performing with my horse. How can I overcome this?” This is a great subject and something I hear often from riders, so I feel it deserves to be addressed in an article. Anxiety and nervousness affect riders at all skill levels, but this doesn't have to hold you back. Anyone can learn how to be successful even if they are nervous at times. Nervousness comes from negative thinking and will always challenge your confidence. If you can learn how to think positively, you can overcome your nervousness by replacing it with a confident attitude and approach. If you are nervous because you are uncertain about your ability, this will change as you improve and become more competent at the various maneuvers. Here are three ways to conquer nerves in the show ring: Number 1: Have a Caller in the Ring. I've found one of the best ways to help you feel more confident is having someone go in the ring with you and call out your test. Make sure that you practice with your caller at home before your show. This way you will feel comfortable with their voice and the timing when calling out maneuvers. After you get some shows under your belt, I suggest that you learn the test and ride it without a caller, but this is a great first step for building confidence. Number 2: Do your Homework. Learn to how to concentrate on both yourself and your horse. You need to master each segment of the test. Practice at

Keep riding ahead, as you can't do anything about what happened during your previous ride, or even 30 seconds ago. Also, remember that your horse knows every word you are thinking! Be confident and turn any negative thoughts into positive ones. Jane Savoie has written a great book, “That Winning Feeling,” which I highly recommend. When you visit our websites at lynnpalm.com and shoplynnpalm.com, you'll find plenty of helpful learning materials and information, including "Dressage Illustrated" books. You can follow along with what I suggest for both English and Western dressage. We love to share our dressage backgrounds and knowledge with you and would love to have you come ride with us. You can join us at our farm in Ocala, Florida, or at one of our Ride Well

home and during your warm up before you compete. I also suggest that you take a blank piece of paper and write each component of the test. Then, next to each component write down the aids that you are going to use for each figure or transition. You will notice remarks like gait quality, willingness, straightness, and balance next to the corresponding movements. Make some personal comments that you are going to remember. For example, movement one has you enter, halt, salute and proceed. Perhaps you could write in the corresponding comments box: "Look up at the judge, breathe, smile, prepare for halt with half halt, crisp trot, flexion to prepare for turn at C." Pick two or three tips that are most suited to what you need to remember for each movement. This is a great process for anyone because it challenges you to ride your horse better in or out of the show ring. You already know that when you ride better, it allows your nerves to settle and builds your confidence. Number 3: Walk your Test at the Show. When the arena is available, go in the ring and walk your test without your horse. Go through each maneuver mentally as you walk it. This is the best tip that I learned from my friend, Jane Savoie, regarding how to improve the accuracy of the test and to gain confidence. If you still feel the flutter of nerves before you go into the ring on show day, remind yourself that the judge wants you to do well. If you have any challenges, just remember to work through them positively. ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MARCH 2015 (38)

By Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. Dr. Juliet Getty never stops urging horse owners to “feed your horse like a horse!” Dr. Getty often speaks about free choice forage feeding as the first line of defense against ulcers, but there is more an owner can do to protect your horse from the pain and stress of this condition. For many reasons, a steady, constant supply of forage keeps your horse's digestive system healthy, but it's especially important in ulcer prevention. Some basic anatomy knowledge reveals why: unlike humans, the horse's stomach secretes acid all the time, even when empty. Chewing creates saliva, a natural antacid. If left without food, horses will chew on whatever they can, even their own manure, to neutralize the acid that is causing them physical pain and mental discomfort. And if left with absolutely nothing to chew on, the horse will commonly develop ulcers. Horses in the wild do not get ulcers. The diet and lifestyle we impose on our horses are to blame for this disabling condition. The good news is encouraging, according to Dr. Getty. “We have the ability to prevent ulcers

through proper feeding and stress reduction.” In addition to offering forage, free-choice, Dr. Getty suggests horse owners consider these protective feeding guidelines: & Avoid oats and other cereal grains (corn, barley, wheat, rice, etc.). Starchy feeds can lead to ulcers by stimulating stomach cells to produce more acid and encouraging acid production through bacterial fermentation. In addition, grains move through the stomach quickly, leaving an empty stomach. & Feed beet pulp instead of cereal grains. It has as many calories as oats without the propensity for acid production. & If you feed extra fat, choose the right type. Vegetable oils (soybean and corn oils) are the most popular fat sources but they promote inflammation due to their high omega 6 content. Choose vegetable sources that are high in omega 3s such as flax (meal or oil) or chia seeds, to reduce inflammation experienced with ulcers. & Provide high-quality protein. Legumes (alfalfa, soybean meal, and split peas) will complement the rest of the diet, offering enough amino acids to allow for proper maintenance and healing. Alfalfa hay

should be offered to any horse who is prone toward developing an ulcer (such as during stall confinement) because it is an excellent buffer. & Feed the hindgut microbial population. Fermentation products and yeast feed the microbes living in the hindgut. This makes digestion more efficient and promotes B vitamin synthesis to heal the digestive tract. & Offer additional B vitamins. Stress uses up B vitamins at a rapid rate. Offer a Bcomplex preparation that includes all 8 Bvitamins but that does not have added iron (there is plenty of iron in forage). An unfamiliar environment, loss of a buddy, stalling, training, travel, and performance can result in more acid production. Make adjustments to your horse's lifestyle that would reduce stress. Even a horse that appears calm can have an ulcer. Avoid ulcers by allowing your horse to be a horse; give him pasture turnout, although I realize it’s not always feasible. Keeping hay in front of him at all times while confined will help protect his digestive system. For more information, contact Dr. Getty at gettyequinenutrition@gmail.com. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Completing that task will hold more value, when taking your time. I am ready to end the session at any point. The result is a horse who will go back to his pasture with a clear mind. The next session could be the day for a breakthrough. As a young rider, my father would always say “manana” (tomorrow in Spanish) when I was struggling with teaching a horse a new task. Horse Association & Club News BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS When this article was written last month, the weather was described as cold and windy, with snow on the ground. Now, it's even colder (-10 degrees this morning, very windy, 20 plus miles per hour) and even more snow is on the ground (12+ inches). Ah, winter in Michigan. However, the calendar tells us that March is here and that brings (officially anyway) the beginning of spring. The Brighton Trail Riders are certainly looking forward to spring. We've pretty much completed our schedule of events for the year and we'll be starting off the season with our first Work Bee in March. We fully expect there will be plenty of work to be done on our trails, and we hope for a big turnout of volunteer workers. Aside from hand tools, we'll also be using mechanized equipment to take on the big jobs. Right now, we're getting ready for the Michigan Horse Council Expo and are recruiting Brighton Trail Riders Association (BTRA) volunteers to staff our display table. We're anxious to tell visitors about our organization and will provide them with copies of our newsletter and other informational material. Of course we will also have membership forms on hand so we hope to sign up some new members too. After that, the outdoor events begin. In late March one of our members, a veterinarian, will offer us a unique opportunity to have our horses vaccinated in the Brighton Recreation Staging Area and then hit the trails for an easy ride. She'll give them their shots and tells us that light exercise is good for horses right afterward, so the trails are just a few steps away. Plus, it will give our members the chance to reconnect and talk about plans for the upcoming season.

We're going to wait before giving readers more information on what will be coming up in the months that follow, but some big activities are in the works. For right now, we're keeping busy seeing to our horses, who are spending more time in the barn than usual. And as we know, the longer a horse is in his stall the more we have to … Don't forget to visit our website and get more information on BTRA at brightontrailriders.com Mark Delaney, BTRA Secretary FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS Hello Trail riders! Spring still seems a long way off with these sub-zero temperatures we are experiencing. The warm weather to come will make all these cold mornings worth it when we see the spring beauties popping out along the trails. Until then, keep your equine buddies warm and healthy. We hope to see all of our trail riders at our booth at the MHC Expo on March 13-15 in Lansing. The venue will be a little different this year since we won't have the "trail room" to greet people. Look for us back by the draft horses, as trail groups have been given space back in this area. Let the Michigan Horse Council know if you like the change. Our Fort Custer Horse Friends Association (FCHFA) Annual Meeting will be held on March 21, 2015. It will be at board member Ken Vandervest's home this year. We will have a 3 pm social hour, 4 pm potluck supper with pulled pork sandwiches, and a 5 pm meeting. Thank you Ken; and we hope to see you all. Go to our website for details on the Spring Campout May 7-10 and the Annual Fall Equestrian Campout September 17-29. These are each four day camp-

outs including special use permits for a beautiful cart trail for your driving enjoyment. Water, and manure removal will be provided with a potluck on Saturday nights. Our famous fundraising auction will be held in September only, so save any items you would like to bring for donation for the Fall campout. This is sure to be another fun and exciting year for our club. The pavilion has been installed at the trail-head. When the weather breaks and the ground thaws, we will have a workday to install the hitching rails around the structure. We also have our new signs for the trail system to help riders navigate the trails. Our kiosk information board is in the process of being ordered. This will have a big map of the trails and let us post important information to all park users. We are currently working on getting a trail clinician to come this year. Hopefully, we will have more information on this at the MCH Expo or on the website. Go to www.fchfa.org for details. We aren't the only club trying to improve our parks. At our last board meeting we heard the Allegan Co. Pleasure Riders are raising monies to build a pavilion at their county park. It was voted to send them $100 to help their fund-raising. This is a hard working group that sponsors benefit rides to help others every year. Look for us at the Kalamazoo Co. 4-H Leaders tack sale in March. Come by the table for campout flyers and conversation. The website has our calendar of events posted for 2015. Any questions call Nancy at (269) 967-3613. See you on the trail soon, Toni Strong, Secretary FCHFA HIGHLAND TRAIL RIDERS Our annual goals and planning meeting was held on January

25, 2015. We had great fellowship, wonderful ideas and discussion regarding ongoing development of our trails. We are still fund-raising and working on grant applications for trail maintenance, badly needed due to erosion. There are also several areas that are very wet and tend not to dry out. We are looking to reroute those trails and have already started marking them off. We also discussed promoting camping at several events. While we do not have the resources to have an organized camping event with food, etc., we will have a group of members that will camp on Friday and Saturday nights at our May and September events. We will attempt to get others to join us and if the interest is great enough we may try to plan a more organized camp out in the future. I am amazed at the number of people who have never ridden our beautiful park, have no idea there is a west side with beautiful elevations, and do not know we have campsites to accommodate horses. If you haven't ridden Highland Recreation Area you don't know what you're missing. Come on, give our park a try, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. We are always looking for individuals to get involved, be on the board, work events, attend work bees, etc. If you or someone you know is interested in getting involved with a trail riding organization, please log onto our website and send us an email. Our website has been redesigned and has dedicated support. We will be posting information about our park, events and happenings, so log onto our website or join us on Facebook to stay up to date. Feel free to email us with any questions, suggestions or concerns. We want you to become a part of our organWWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

HUNGERFORD TRAIL RIDERS Come Ride Hungerford Trails! Hungerford trail system has over 50 miles of trails and two-tracks which include hills and woods. Hungerford Trail Riders Assoc. (HTRA) has furnished a picnic table for everyone to use, and we placed it on Trail 20. Trail riders can choose to explore a range in scenery as they ride through the heavily forested areas, into open fields and meadows all on marked trails; or ride to Woodville Store, tie up your horse and grab an ice cream cone or rest and mingle; then head back to camp! Woodville has hitching posts, a water tank, an outhouse, picnic table, and a mounting block. Woodville is approximately 1½ hour ride one way from the campground. Just follow the ice cream cone signs along the trail! Day Use Area: We have two day use areas with plenty of room for trailers. There is an outhouse, a picnic table, and an information board, plus trail maps. Cost per day is $5, or purchase a season pass at the Manistee National Forrest Office in Baldwin. One day use area is approximately ¼ miles beyond the main campground, and the other day use area entrance is on the North side of Hungerford where the entrance is on 13 Mile Road near Beech Avenue. Main Campground Area: The main campground has 48 sites. Each site has picket poles for your horse and there are wheelbarrows and manure bins for your use. There are three outhouses, a water well house, and a dumpster. It is first come, first served, and it does get busy

during holidays! Generators are permitted during the day only. There is an information board at the entrance, with trail maps and a pay tube. Cost per night is $15. Campground Opens May 1! Group Campground Area: We also have a “group camp.” This area has eight camp sites and is private from the main campground. It is perfect for a large group that wants to enjoy the trails but return to camp and relax with friends! It has its own outhouse and a large campfire area with bench seats. The group campground must be reserved and campground fee paid ahead of time. Call Baldwin Ranger District (231) 745-4631 for information, or reserve online at www.recreation.gov. I want to welcome our new board members and say thank you for stepping up and helping us run our club. I also want to say thank you to our retiring board, Becky Ratliff and Cindy Burd. It's been wonderful having you on the board and we couldn't have done it without you! All the hard work and effort you've put in at events and in shaping KTRA have been very much appreciated by your fellow board members and our membership. THANK YOU! We will be sending out a flyer at the end of March, or beginning of April with details. A flyer will also be posted on our website and on Facebook. Don't forget March is still crosscountry skiing season over at Kensington if there is snow on the ground. Please make sure you check their website to see which horse trails are unavailable because they are being used for cross-country skiing. And remember, when you do get out on the trails, you can report a trail problem on our website, www.kensingtontrailriders.org. We appreciate you helping us keep our trails clear. Don't forget to visit our website and like our Facebook page. Happy Trails! MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING With the awards banquet behind us, it is time to look forward to the first rides of the year. We will be starting the season early on April 11 and 12 at the Brighton Recreation Area with the Spring Flowers Competitive Mounted Orienteering (CMO). Thanks to

the brave Cindy Hotz for taking on the challenge of putting on a CMO ride. If you have questions about this ride, please feel free to call her Cindy (810) 735-5710 or catch her by email at clw2369@ aol.com. After this ride we will be heading to Ortonville Recreation Area for our annual Hadley Hills CMO on May 16-17, organized by Steve Keim and Vera Kraft. Feel free to contact them with questions (810) 7934558. The proceeds from this ride will help to support OREA. Please check the Saddle Up! Magazine calendar for all our ride weekends this summer. You can also go to www.nacmo.org or to Michigan Competitive Mounted Orienteering's Facebook page. If you have never tried Competitive Mounted Orienteering before, this is your lucky year! We have rides as far north as Reed City, south as Three Rivers, west as Allegan and as far east as Elba. No matter where you live in Michigan, there will be a ride near you. Every ride manager is required to have a station set-up in the camp so they can teach you the ins and outs of the sport before you even mount up. If you would like to ride along with a seasoned team to learn some of the tricks, please ask the ride manager when you arrive. If you don't have a compass, no worries, we will lend you one at the ride. This sport is also open to all types of equestrians, stock or gaited horses, western or English riders. If you love to ride the trails with your horse, fast or slow, and are looking for a challenge to keep your mind working while you are out there, you should try competitive mounted orienteering. We would love to have you! See you on the trails, Janet WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Horse Association & Club News MICHIGAN FOX TROTTERS On January 10, 2015, the Michigan Fox Trotter Assoc. Those in attendance were Kathy K., Char and George Ostrom, Marilyn Mannino, Chuck Fanslow, Jan Wolfin, Sandi Roath, and Joan Duncan. A quorum was present, so business could be conducted. Secretary's Report: The November 1, 2014, Secretary's report was accepted as read with no errors. Chuck F. made the motion with Char O. seconding it. There was no correspondence to read. There are many other benefits as well. Visit www.mfthba.com for more information. New benefits are being added! Treasurer's Report: Treasurer, Char Ostrom reported that we have a positive balance in the checking account and savings accounts. Our promo booth and stall have been paid for. No MFTHBA report was given. Michigan Horse Council (MHC) Report: Sandi Roath reported that the MI Horse Expo plans are proceeding with about half of the stalls filled by associations and breeders so far (we have our promo booth and stall at its usual location). Our name would be on the plaque along with other donators. Reminder YSTR dues are due by March 31, 2015. Note: John Soper reported a neighbors older horse was attacked by coyotes in Kent County. The horse has a few gashes, but is ok. There were other horses in the pasture during the attack. Keep an eye on your elderly horse. Spring will be here soon! Kathy Taylor, YSTRA Secretary

Hungerford Trail Riders Association The Hungerford Trail Riders Association (HTRA) is a non-profit association formed by devoted horsewomen and men mostly in the West Michigan region; but certainly have drawn membership of members throughout Michigan and other surrounding states. The purpose of the Association is to maintain and enhance the equestrian trails, encourage rider participation on the trails, and increase membership network at Hungerford Recreation Area in Big Rapids, Michigan. Hungerford Recreation Area is operated by the Huron-Manistee National Forest and is located approximately seven miles West of Big Rapids, Michigan. Access to Hungerford Trails is located just North on Cypress Road and then a right on Hungerford Lake Drive. The equine season is open from May 1st through November 1st. The Hungerford Recreation Area is a non-motorized area consisting of over 6,500 acres of National Forest System lands. The area provides opportunities to hike, snowshoe, cross-country ski, horseback ride, mountain bike and enjoy the National Forests. The horseback riding and mountain biking trails are two separate trails. The trail is marked with yellow diamonds for the mountain bike trail with a bike symbol and blue diamonds with horses for the horse trail. Trail maps are provided at both campgrounds and the day use area. The trails go through heavily forested areas of oak, maple, aspen, and red and white pine. At times riders will cross or utilize roads. Parts of the

Saddle Fitting By Diane Kaser The Western Dressage Association of Michigan is busy! More and more shows are adding western dressage classes. The interest is growing and you can become a part of it. Check out our facebook page and our new revised website for information (www.wdami.org). If you have not visited the Western Dressage Association of America's website (www.westerndressage association.org), you should. You will find great articles and tons of good reading that will answer questions about our new sport. I have been doing more research on proper saddle fit, trees, rock, bridging, and other fitting issues. I have both of Dr. Joyce Harmon's saddle fit and pain free backs books. I have discovered that fitting a western saddle is more complicated, at least to me. On both English and western saddles, the tree is the main element to fit. It's like a skeleton. I have found some common problems concerning saddle fit and I would like share them with you. Saddle slips from side to side constantly: The shape of bars doesn't match the shape of the

trails are suitable for less experienced riders, while other segments offer a more experienced riding opportunity. The topography ranges from hilly to very hilly. Riders will experience a range in scenery as they ride through the heavily forested areas and into open fields and meadows. Hungerford provides a variety of camping and trail riding options for horse enthusiasts consisting of weekend or week long camping at the main campground, group camping at the group campground, and two Day Use areas for riders who chose to enjoy the trails for a few hours. The main campground is occupied on a 'first-come/first-served basis with 45 sites available to campers. The group campground has eight camp sites that holds 64 people; where each site accommodates 1horse trailer, 2-vehicles, and 8-people. Reservations for the group site is made completely on line at www.recreation.gov. The Hungerford Trail Association schedules approximately three work bee sessions during the riding season for the purpose of maintaining a thriving and accessible equine trail system; and to preserve and improve the trail system within the guidelines established by the Huron-Manistee National Forest authority. The Association host riding events throughout the year to assist horse enthusiasts in the pursuit to venture the trails with family, friends and meet other riders with similar riding disciplines. The HTRA Executive Board welcomes riders to come enjoy the miles of trails at Hungerford and to 'Like' the Hungerford Trail Riders Association Facebook page for announcements and updates. If you have any questions about riding at Hungerford Recreation Area, feel free to contact Michael Simcoe at 01simcoe@gmail.com or Joan Balk at jbalk72@att.net.

horse, wrong width or angle, incorrect twist, too much padding, and unbalanced rider. Saddle goes to one side consistently: Asymmetrical horse, broken tree or out of whack, stretched or uneven stirrup leathers, uneven rigging, rider is out of balance and carries more weight on one side, and uneven leg length. Saddle interferes with the action of the shoulder: The gullet is too small, the tree is too wide and the saddle tips forward, and placing the saddle too far forward onto the horse's shoulder causing pain. Dry spots: The tree has too much rock or is bridging, wrong width/angle of bars, cinching too tight, dirty or uneven saddle pads, and the saddle being held too far forward by a breast collar. I know there are a lot more. I wanted to hit some of the more common problems that are easier to detect. Proper saddle placement for English and western saddles is paramount. Unbalanced rider issues are common as well. How many times do you see a rider in a chair seat? The rider is bracing against the cantle and pushing his legs out in front. Some saddles will put you in that seat because the

stirrups are hung too far forward. You have no choice how or where to plant yourself. When on a trail ride many times I have seen riders leaning off to one side heavily. Have a friend help you on the ground to see if you are sitting in the middle, or look in an arena mirror. If you have issues with saddle fit, I hope I have given you a starting point. Winter is a great time to check your tack for wear and safety. Then when the tulips are up and daffodils blooming, you'll be already to ride! WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Aynslee and Turbo met online in the summer of 2013. Most people say that when a relationship starts online it is bound to fail, but not this one. Shortly after their chance meeting, Turbo moved from Sheridan, Michigan to our farm in Ortonville. Ever since their first day together, Turbo has been a pure gentleman. At 6 years old, his ground manners surpass most other quarter horses and he has tried everything that Aynslee asks of him including jumping, trail riding and other unusual things. While he may not be the fastest horse in the barrel race, he is definitely the most even tempered. We look forward to many more years with our boy Turbo.
