SADDLE UP! MAGAZINE NEWS BRIEFS MI REINED COW HORSE Are you tired of going around in circles and want to try something new for you and your equine partner? This just might be the event you're looking for! Whether you're completely new to the sport or have been glancing over the reining or cutting fence for years, reined cow horse competition can be exhilarating for both horse and rider! The Michigan Reined Cow Horse Association is an official National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) affiliate. In 2010, we will be holding 12 NRCHA approved shows from our home facility, JDC Ranch in Evart, MI. Our mission: to preserve the heritage and tradition of the western reined stock horse. We are an all breed association – everyone is welcome! Our goal: to promote affordable, quality, family oriented competition and events in Michigan. All of our events are structured to encourage exhibitors, regardless of age and experience levels, to participate and compete in a safe, fun and supportive environment. Come give us a try! There will be a Reined Cow Horse Clinic on March 20th starting at 10:30am. We will cover proper equipment for the reined cow horse and work instruction. For information visit us at www.michiganreinedcowhors e.com or call Shelly at (231) 633-5502. MHC STALLION EXPO Dates for the 2010 Expo will be March 12, 13 and 14; location will be the same as usual, the MSU Livestock Pavilion, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. Featured this year will be David Davis…with stunning demonstrations and clinics on

Roman Riding, Cowboy Dressage, Freestyle Reining and a very unique Trick Horse. Also appearing will be Nicole Carswell, a world renowned expert on gaited horses of all breeds. Nicole will share her expertise in demonstrations, clinics and seminar sessions. Returning by popular request, is cowboy singer, song writer, poet and clinician, TJ Casey. The Sunday morning Christian service will have a new format and presentation group. Educational seminars will be presented by popular Michigan equine lawyer, Julie Fershtman; and Tee Rayment will tell about the history and uses of the cowboy chuck wagon, complete with his authentic chuck wagon to illustrate his talks. Our hitch this year will be a “rare” breed, the Gotland. With fewer than 200 of these versatile ponies in the United States, this will be a unique opportunity to see them both up close and in action. Several popular 2009 programs appearing again in 2010 are: High School Rodeo on Friday evening, with the addition of their Wrangler division (middle school) classes; the Cross Winds Ranch Colt Challenge, with new schedules and features to make this interesting program even better; Color Presentations; Michigan Multi Jurisdictional Mounted Police Drill Team (fresh from appearances in Kentucky, Michigan State Fair and numerous parades) and much more. In keeping with making Sunday a Family Day, there will be a special Family Ticket for this day: $30 for 2 adults and 4 children, 6-14; 5 and under are always free. NEW THIS YEAR: Family-Fest will b e a n ex c i t i n g d a y o f entertainment, education, and fun to be experienced and enjoyed by the whole family.

©2010 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAR. 2010

Start the morning out with a training demonstration that will help us examine our own life and family and how, like the horse, we too can be welltrained and productive. Mid-morning through late afternoon, your family will be able to engage in the various Family-Fest activities. Come look at the insides of a saddle and how it is put together or paint your own Breyer horse. Ask questions of the Grace Adventures wranglers on the pitfalls of first-time horse ownership. There will be horse crafts and a real chuck wagon. Youth-oriented programs, for youngsters up through teenagers, are being included in the Sunday schedule, and the Seminar room will be devoted entirely to Youth Programs that day. The Saturday evening program is shaping up very well, and looks to an exciting end to the day. There will be appearances by David Davis, Friesian Musical Kur, a Gotland driving exhibition; the Michigan Multi-Jurisdictional Mounted Police Drill team appearance and much more. A pair of twin Clydesdales from Traverse City, Michigan, will be at the Expo this year. This unique pair has made several appearances, supporting many great non-profit organi-zations. The Twins will be in the Draft area during the weekend, welcoming visitors. The stallion area is filled, with both familiar faces and new ones. New this year will be a Baskir Curly stallion, among others. There will be 21 different breeds represented on Stallion Avenue! The Mike Roath Memorial Barn Manager's Award will have a different selection process this year: It will be a People's Choice Award, with the Champion and Reser ve determined by ballot from those attending the Expo.

(38)

Here's your chance to vote for the stallion/stall exhibit you think is the best at this year's Expo! The Champion and Reserve will be presented in the Main Arena, Sunday, March 14, at 12:30 p.m. Michigan Horse Council awards many scholarships each year, and the recipients of five of these scholarships are presented during the annual Horse Expo. These include the three MHC member scholarships, which are open to any MHC member or member of a MHC member organization. These are $1,000 each, and may be used at the college of the student's choice. The other scholarships presented at the Expo are two scholarships, $500 each, presented to senior Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association members, with selection done by MIHA. Presentation of these scholarships takes place on Sunday, in the main arena. Don't forget the shopping! Vendor space is once again completely sold out. Every inch of available space will be filled with a wealth of just about everything pertaining to the horse…from tack, horse clothing and “people” clothes to fences, barns and horse trailers. Associations will have infor mation about their particular breed or group; there will be fine art, gifts and much, much more! It's a great time to prepare for the coming show season. Once again, for door prizes we have saddles donated by The Wire Horse a n d We s t 2 0 S a d d l e C o m p a n y; a n d Pr i e f e r t Manufacturing Company is donating a 50' Round Pen. Remember the dates: March 12-14, 2010. A full schedule can be found in the February Saddle Up! Magazine or on michiganhorsecouncil.com. More news on next page! WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

SADDLE UP! MAGAZINE NEWS BRIEFS RHAM ANNIVERSARY In 2010 the Ranch Horse Assoc. of Michigan (RHAM) will celebrate its 5th year as an Association. In celebration, it will be hosting an Introduction to Ranch Horse Clinic on March 27, 2010 at McKinley’s Harmony Acres in Cassopolis, Michigan. The Clinic is Open to anyone, of any age, with any breed of horse, that is interested in learning and trying the events offered at a Ranch Horse Show. RHAM was established on May 1st, 2006, as a Charter of the American Ranch Horse Association. From 2006-2008, RHAM held several yearly shows in various locations. In 2009, shows moved to the Berrien County Youth Fairgrounds and held clinics and cutting practices at private farms in southern Michigan and northern Indiana.

In 2010, RHAM plans on again hosting shows at Berrien County in June, July & August, in addition to some Extreme Cowboy Competitions and additional clinics in locations to be announced. RHAM Shows are familyoriented and offer ARHA and Open Classes. Any registered western stock horse breed is eligible to be registered with ARHA. The breeds include AQHA, APHA, ApHC, IBHA, ABRA, PHBA & PtHA. In RHAM’s first year in existence it was recognized as “Runner Up” with New York for the Charter of the Year at the Annual American Ranch Horse Association National Convention. ARHA and RHAM were founded to promote the abilities of the all around versatile working horse, regardless of breed, through

shows and clinics in a friendly, down to earth, family atmosphere with a uniform set of rules, qualified ranch horse judges using uniformity and consistency in judging with a state & national point system for exhibitors to compete for state and national titles, awards and World Show. ARHA and RHAM are designed not for a specializedone event horse, but the true all-around horse that is enjoyable to ride in a variety of events. The ideal “Ranch Horse” is one that is goodmoving, collected & balanced; a well trained, responsive horse that is fun to ride, but versatile and athletic enough to go through trail obstacles, perform a reining pattern and has the ability to work a cow. Whether ridden on the ranch, on the trail or in the ring; RHAM is open to all

WESTERN MI APPALOOSA REG. I can’t believe it’s March already and the MHC Stallion Expo is approaching fast. It seems we were just at the banquet! From the looks of things, everyone had a great time. The facilities were very nice, the food was great and the awards were awesome. Just a reminder in case some of you didn’t realize it, the WMAR has their own Incentive Fund. There are three divisions, Open Halter, Open Judged Performance and Open Gymkhana. A one time payment of $35.00 and a nomination form is all it takes to apply for each division. WMAR points are counted, with the two WMAR sponsored shows giving double points, and at the end of the year all entry money is divided on a dollar amount per point basis and paid out at the year end banquet. Contact Tami Vickery for forms and info. Jackie Wintjen and I are in charge of the June show and are still looking for some volunteers. Please let us know if there’s a particular job you excel at and we’ll gladly let you show off your talents, even if it’s just for a few hours. It has been discussed that the club might be offering a modest payment for the ringmasters each day. More details on that later. Tami wanted me to remind everyone that if you are placing an order with Jeffers, we have a promotional code that when used will earn the club a 3% payback. Type in “WMAR” on your order to help our club earn a little extra cash. Amy Schweiger still has a few very nice stallions available from the 2009 WMAR Stallion Service Sale. This Stallion Service Sale will be taking a short hiatus due to the poor economy. The SSS Futurity will still be held for those foals resulting from 2010 breedings as well as for the previous sales. We just won’t be holding a Stallion Service Sale in 2010 and will be making a decision on 2011’s sale later in the year. Some changes are coming for the 2010 Classic Show/Futurity. Probably one of the biggest: classes will start at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon with the WMAR SSS Futurity and then moving into all the regular halter classes and the MI Appaloosa Breeders Futurity halter classes. Hunter in Hand and Showmanship will still be on Saturday. For up to the minute information, be sure to check www.wmarapp.com You will find lots of information as well as fun photos. The next WMAR BOD meeting will be April 10, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the MSU Pavilion in one of the classrooms. Everyone is always welcome to attend. There will be no March meeting due to the MI Stallion Expo and Trade Show. ‘til next month...Sharon Clark WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Treating Infertility in Older Mares By Heather Smith Thomas Uterine infection is a common cause of infertility, especially in older mares. Body tissues are not as healthy and resilient as in a younger mare. Old mares often have trouble throwing off infections introduced at foaling or b re e d i n g b e c a u s e t h e i r immune responses are not as strong. Whenever the cervix is open, bacteria enter the uterus; all mares pick up a temporary infection. Normal mares with strong, healthy reproductive tracts resist this type of infection, quickly flushing contaminants from breeding out of the uterus before the embryo emerges from the Fallopian tube to attach to the uterine lining. Old mares, however, often do not overcome the effects of inflammation and infection in time to make the uterus healthy enough to nourish and sustain the embryo. In a young healthy mare, the microscopic contaminants in the uterus following breeding are ingested by specialized cells, and larger particles are physically expelled through secretions and uterine contractions that send this drainage out through the cervix. This natural flushing occurs quickly and the uterus is clean and ready for the fertilized egg. Problem mares may take several days or longer to flush the uterus because the activity of uterine muscles is weaker and more sporadic. Often this lengthy or inadequate flushing results in death of the embryo or chronic uterine infection. After researchers at the U. of California (Davis) found that flushing the uterus with buffered saline solution helped clean the uterus after breeding, i n c re a s i n g c h a n c e s f o r successful pregnancy, many veterinarians began using this

treatment. The flushing is generally done at least 6 hours after breeding (to give sperm time to travel through the uterus and be safely in the Fallopian tubes) and no later than 20 hours post breeding. The buffered saline is pumped into the uterus through a catheter, then drawn back out, and repeated several times until the solution is clear and free of debris. This is often very effective, but time consuming and for some mares may take as much as 9 liters of fluid. Research at U. of Florida with oxytocin then showed that this hormone can be used to make the uterus contract better and flush itself, often clearing uterine fluid within 30 minutes. Many veterinarians now use oxytocin for problem mares, sometimes in conjunction with flushing (lavage) or with uterine infusion. Oxytocin is produced naturally by the mare. It triggers labor, aids uterine contractions and shedding of the placenta, and helps the uterus shrink back to normal size. In older mares, however, production of this hormone may be inadequate. Injections of oxytocin seem to help. It can be given right after breeding, or right after uterine infusion following breeding. Several small multiple doses may have more effect than one dose. Some veterinarians infuse these mares after breeding, rather than flushing them. Saline mixed with an antibiotic and a little DMSO may trigger some oxytocin release in the mare. Injections of oxytocin may be given in addition to the infusion. For lavage (flushing), most veterinarians wait at least 6 hours after breeding, but an infusion can be given immediately after breeding

©2010 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAR. 2010

because it triggers more uterine activity and better sperm transport. A problem mare can be infused within 4 to 8 hours of breeding, sometimes even as late as the next day, with good results. It is safe to infuse a mare as late as 3 days after breeding, because the fertilized egg has not yet come down out of the Fallopian tube. Infusion can be followed with injection of oxytocin. If a mare is bred in the morning you can give oxytocin in the evening; the oxytocin can be given 8 to 12 hours after the breeding. With some older mares, the infusion can be given before breeding, when they first come into heat, infusing them if the follicle is not yet ready. To be safe, an infusion before breeding should be given at least 24 hours ahead. It may seem illogical with a big fluid-filled uterus to fill it up more, but the infusion stimulates the uterus to contract and clean itself out.

(70)

The uterus in any mare becomes soft and flaccid when in heat, feeling like a dishrag when checked by rectal palpation, but if it feels punchy and doughy, the mare has problems. You can also see the difference on an ultrasound; the older mare's uterus will have thick, meaty walls. UTERINE CYSTS The older mare will also have more uterine cysts. If she's producing a foal every year, these cysts are nothing to worry about, but if the mare is not settling, the cysts may be part of the problem. In these cases, some veterinarians will infuse the mare 2 or 3 times during a heat cycle with a mixture of 40 cc. saline and 20 cc. DMSO, then wait and breed the mare on the next heat cycle after checking her uterus with ultrasound. In most cases this treatment will eliminate or shrink the cysts, and the mare will be more apt to conceive.

Natural Horsemanship Challenge By Tim Scarberry

Although the Horsemen of Wind Walker Farms of Fenton, Michigan are always up for a challenge, anyone who has ever worked a horse knows a cold, rainy, windy day is not ideal for a training session. Nonetheless, that is the situation in which we found ourselves on October 9, 2009. Charles Teague and I had been invited to the Kentucky Horse Park for the KMSHA Int’l. Grand Championships. We were to compete in their first Natural Horsemanship Training Challenge and were excited for the opportunity to demo our Colt Starting. The challenge consisted of four trainers and four barely halter broken colts. Each trainer was assigned a horse, a fifty foot round pen, and two training sessions totaling three hours. At the end of this time, the horse must ride through an obstacle course and complete a freestyle training demo. As I entered the round pen the time restriction was on my mind. I knew full well I would have to slightly modify my technique to meet the time constraints. Despite the fact the clock was ticking, I wanted to be thorough in my evaluation of the horse I had drawn. Entering the corral as calmly as possible, I locked eyes with her. I wanted to tell her I understand the language she uses. Drawing her to a stop with my own body language, I

had her attention; now I wouldn't have to burn up valuable time in a lengthy joinup session. After a short introduction, I removed the typical nylon web halter and replaced it with a Wind Walker Farm halter as well as a fourteen-foot training rope. After only a short time with the horse in hand, I was comfortable moving straight into the desensitization process that begins by shaking a stick with a plastic bag attached to the end and progresses to the motion and noise of a cracking stock whip. All the while my crew was adding more and more obstacles to the round pen, including cones, balls, tarps, pipes and even a pedestal. As I continued to build trust with the horse, I could see her eyes and body language softening up, telling me she was willing to accept me as the leader in our relationship - the cornerstone of a successful training partnership. With my evaluation complete, and the horse learning to pay attention to my body language rather than being distracted by the flapping bag or the commotion of the stock whip, I began to realize I had drawn very well in this competition. This filly wasn't spooky or nervous; she was sensible and, considering she had little previous handling, I was confident I

wouldn't have to work through many bad habits. Having completed step one and two, evaluation and desensitization, it was time to start our Advanced Desensitization Process designed to teach her to deal with their emotions during an extremely stressful situation. The key is to keep the horse's focus on the handler. Using a retreat and approach technique, I introduced her to a chainsaw with no chain on the bar. Within minutes she was calmly standing while I revved the chainsaw. I even set the running saw on her back! Her faith and trust in me had overcome the sound and vibrations. At this point, I had my associate start up a backpack leaf blower and bring it to me. After putting the blower on, I walked away from the horse - giving her the impression that neither the blower nor I had any interest in her. The use of this technique will inevitably cause the horse to become curious about what I am doing, and she will begin to close the distance on her own. Once again, within minutes, I had the horse standing calmly, tolerating the noise and the wind blowing over every inch of her. The final step in the leaf blower lesson is to add shiny colorful streamers as a visual stimulant on top of the wind and noise. After completing this intense desensitization process, adding a saddle and pad to the equation was one of the mildest situations she had been exposed to during the forty-five minutes. As I traded the leaf blower for my saddle, the threatening clouds began to pour down rain. With fortyfive minutes remaining, we still had a long way to go. By then, the foundation we had been building was solid. The wind and rain had little effect as I introduced her first saddle. As with everything

(74)

else, the saddle was presented using the retreat and approach technique. Once the saddle and pad were in place, I removed them promptly and repeated the process several times in order to show her their presence was only temporary. Doing this builds the horse's confidence. Before long, she was ready to begin accepting weight in the stirrups, first on one side, then the other. With a loose but short rein, I slipped my left foot into the stirrup; as I began to put weight on the stirrup, she began to move away. Holding my position, I gently bent her in a circle until she came to a complete stop. When her feet quit moving, I quickly slipped out of the stirrup and walked away, giving her time to think about what had just happened - I quit when she stopped. I then repeated the process many times on both sides until she was comfortable. Now she was ready to accept her first rider. I mounted and dismounted, not allowing enough time to pass for the horse to become nervous. I gradually extended the time, eventually asking her to take her first steps under a saddle. I spent time casually riding around the corral allowing her to grow accustomed to the feel of her new saddle and rider. With her calm, I spent the time remaining in the first session reintroducing the stock whip, chainsaw and leaf blower from the saddle. By the end of the first hour and a half, I could ride her with a running leaf blower on my back, I could hold the chain saw as high as possible while revving engine and I could stand in the saddle and crack my stock whip. Although I was soaking wet from the rain, nothing could dampen my spirits from what I had accomplished. This article will be continued in the April 2010 issue of Saddle Up! Magazine.
