Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs NEW CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW! ATTENTION MICHIGAN OPEN HORSE SHOW PARTICIPANTS: Beginning this year, a new Championship Show is being offered JUST FOR YOU! Your only qualification in this, the inaugural year, is to attend and show at three separate open shows prior to coming to the MI Open Horse Show Championship Show on September 21-23, 2012, at the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds in Corunna, MI. This show was specifically designed for open show competitors so that virtually anybody could participate. Any breed is welcome, any age is encouraged, and we offer every discipline that is typically listed at an open show in the state of Michigan. Our awards are what you might expect to see at a championship event, with embroidered gifts for every first place rider, trophy, neck ribbon and payback for 7 championship classes, and special personalized awards for our 18 highpoint divisions. And, as if it couldn't get better, we have an overall high-point adult award and an overall high-point youth award that includes a buckle and payback from every entry at the show in the form of a Wire Horse gift certificate. This show does not exclude our gymkhana friends, with 5 high-point divisions, payback for top times in each event and embroidered gifts for our first place riders. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to PEP (Proud Equestrians Program) to assist in their ongoing efforts to bring the riding experience to individuals that may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate. NEW USDF PROGRAM The United States Dressage Federation (USDF), in partnership with PerfectWorldDressage.com, is pleased to announce the new USDF/Perfect World - Dressage Challenge as well as added USDF member benefits offered through Perfect World Dressage. CELEBRATION OF THE HORSE Upon last year's retirement of Carole Yunkes, owner of Equine Gatherings in Metamora, MI, there was much concern about the cancellation of the 2011 Celebration of the Horse and the indefinite postponement of this wonderful festival which celebrates "everything equine" The public outcry was tremendous. So many were disappointed. The Metamora Chamber of Commerce (MACC) phone line was flooded with calls questioning the cancelation of the festival. After much discussion and consideration, it (40)

was decided to bring back the event this year with much optimism that the 2012 Celebration of the Horse will be bigger and even better than before! The event date is Saturday, September 29, 2012. Be sure to mark your calendar! "This festival is an important community centerpiece for Metamora and the local tourist industry… and has been a ticket to a wonderful variety of fun for all ages," stated Carol Yunkes, retired committee member. "In 2010, several thousand horse enthusiasts from as far as Ohio and Indiana joined us in this celebration of the horse." While there is incredible support within the committee, the heartfelt support received from the community has been wonderful, especially from two Metamora residents, Nan Hall-Benton and Karen Lemieux, who have graciously accepted the role of bringing this festival back to the community. Steps have already been taken to ensure a grand reception this year. A thank you to the Metamora Area Chamber of Commerce for providing the promotional backing of the Michigan Events Association and PURE MICHIGAN®. The festival is also listed in the 2012 Home Town Treasures brochure which is published by the Four County Community Foundation with a distribution of 20,000+ copies annually. A GREAT LOSS... “Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened.” Heaven’s remuda improved by one fine mare on February 8, 2012, leaving this planet one short, with the passing of Whizzards Baby Doll, aka Roxy, best known as horsewoman Stacy Westfall’s bareback and bridleless mount. Roxy sustained traumatic injury after apparently becoming cast in her stall sometime during the night of February 5th. Roxy was treated for two days at Valley View Animal Hospital in Dover, OH, before being humanely euthanized on February 8th. Roxy was due to foal in early March, and although

a C-section was performed, the little sorrel stud colt proved too weak to survive. Roxy had a wide and varied career that included becoming the second highest earning offspring of Whizard Jac, who was both NRHA futurity champion and USET champion. She won two All-American Quarter Horse Congress Championships and two Reserve Championships, the NRA Futurity Freestyle championship and the Tulsa Reining Classic twice, to name just a few.

The Interscholastic Equestrian Association is a wonderful opportunity for youth riders whose schools do not offer equestrian teams, or for those kids who do not have a horse of their own. Team members travel regionally to compete at hosted shows where horses and tack are donated for use in western horsemanship and reining classes - all you need to participate is show clothes and the will to win. Riders draw horses, then hop on and head into the ring. Each competitor is judged on their horsemanship, and levels are offered for beginning, intermediate, and advanced riders. Team spirits were flying high before the show, even considering the 7 a.m. start time,

MI IEA WESTERN TEAM WIN Michigan's Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) Western team certainly reined in the awards at their last competition, the Slidin Snowflake Show, held at Equine Differences in Oberlin, OH, on December 10th. Make It Rein, coached by Sharon Davis of Howell, MI, is a group of 10

unheated barn, and nervous parents. High spirits turned out to be well warranted, as Make it Rein took home a team third in only their second team competition. Competing against nine other teams and approximately 225 total entries, that is quite the accomplishment. In addition to team honors, individual honors were also handed out to several Make It Rein members- Alyssa Kress and Amber Getchel took both took home 1st place ribbons in Intermediate Reining, Mike Anderson won 1st in Intermediate Horsemanship, and Sebastian Cousins was second in Open Reining. MOUNTED UNIT Requirements include a riding evaluation, personal interview and an extensive background investigation. Applicants must attend a 12 week, evening and Saturday basic Reserve Police Academy once the hiring process is complete. Applicants provide their own horse, tow vehicle, and trailer meeting department standards. Applicants and their mounts will exhibit healthy, well groomed, calm, controlled mannerisms, equitation and behavior skills, balanced seat and social behavior and people skills, acceptable within crowds, drill maneuvers, and with other horses. A combination of equitation, dressage, show, and pragmatic horsemanship are preferred. Deputies are required to ride approximately two hundred hours per year with the Mounted Unit which includes patrolling the Oakland County Parks System, Paint Creek Trail System, and other details in and around Oakland County on weekends and holidays during summer and spring months. This is a paid parttime position. Requires experienced horsemen and women with the ability to control potential hazardous situations while on horseback. Only geldings of 15.2 hands or higher will be accepted for the unit. All equipment and tack is provided.
