The All American Quarter Horse Congress in collaboration with Ohio Quarter Horse Racing Association, announces the return of The Congress Futurity Stakes Race $15,000 Added $$ - Two Year Olds of 2014 – 350 Yds. Horse Stays First Priority at Road to the Horse 2016 Dowers winner - “It’s an honor. I am so proud of my horsemanship, to win an event like the NRCHA Futurity, then to win Road to the Horse and tie the two together, that’s just huge” stated the emotional Dowers right after his win. When asked what helped him take the title, the answer was easy for Dowers, “Being myself and staying true to what I do.” Equaled in class and charisma, the 6666 ranch colt Seven Attraction carried Dowers to his first World Championship of Colt Starting title. Winters won Round One displaying outstanding horsemanship and incurred no penalties. Although it was not a popular choice, Anderson did incur a score and time penalty after a Violation of a Rest Period for his colt. This resulted in both a penalty to Anderson’s score in Round Two and a reduced working time in Round Three. Road to the Horse has always placed, and always will place the horse as first priority. Dowers’ captivating personality and inspiring training philosophies captured the hearts of every horse lover in the stadium. Seven Attraction seemed to collect as many fans along the road as Dowers. This outstanding, intelligent and athletic sorrel colt had something special, the same something special fans saw in Dowers. If fans didn’t know who Nick Dowers was before, they certainly know now. Hassler and Arts to Present the 2016 USDF Sport Horse Prospect Development Forum The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce the return of Scott Hassler and Willy Arts for the 2016 USDF Sport Horse Prospect Development Forum. There is less momentum at the walk to help your horse stay straight. If he is having trouble staying straight at the walk, practice transitions between the walk and the trot. Walk straight and at a steady pace—without slowing or speeding up. Next, practice varying your speed at the walk. After practicing walking in a straight line, walk in circles at a steady pace. Remember, that when you circle your horse, he should have a slight bend or curve to his body and not have just his head turned to the inside. Always be aware of your position in the saddle. Your spine should be centered over your horse and an observer should be able to draw a straight line from your ear to your shoulder to the middle of your hip, to the back of your heel, and down to the ground. Your eyes should always be looking ahead to where you want to go and not down at your horse. Remember, if you have trouble controlling your horse's speed at any gait, bring him into a turn because bending will automatically slow him down. At a walk, initiate the turn by using an upward motion with your outside rein only. This will shorten the horse's stride at the walk. Think of your outside rein as your “brake.” This material is taken from a series of articles I did for Trail Rider Magazine with writer Cynthia McFarland. Building a Partnership with Your Horse

Improving the Walk by Lynn Palm It probably comes as no surprise that a good walk is important in a trail horse. However, a horse with a comfortable, groundcovering walk is one that will be appreciated by real working cowboys, dressage riders, endurance and competitive trail riders, as well as weekend trail riders. That is because the walk is one of the hardest gaits to improve in a horse, and yet it is the gait most commonly used by most riders outside of speed events. Although it is difficult to improve the quality of a horse's walk, there are some exercises you can practice to teach your horse to walk at a comfortable, controlled speed in a straight line. When your horse is in a controlled walk, it is much easier for him to stay balanced when he is going up and down hills. If a horse is balanced and moving in a straight line, he can better transfer his weight to his hind end when going downhill as well as negotiate rough terrain much more easily. Practice the following exercise in your regular tack in an enclosed area at first before you take it out on the trail. Make sure you are sitting balanced in the center of your horse's back and that your cues are clear so that your horse understands them. The Basic Walk Many riders create problems unintentionally when they either kick or grip the horse's side to get him to walk forward, but these two actions actually make the horse resist. Try pounding your ribs with your fist to get an idea of what your horse feels if you do this. Remember that a horse is sensitive enough to feel a fly land on his skin so he does not need much of a leg aid when you ask him to move forward. Use your calves, and not your heels, in as light a touch as necessary to ask your horse to walk forward. If your horse does not step forward immediately into a walk, slide your calves slightly backward and ask again. If that doesn't work, use a “clucking” sound with your leg aid or touch his side with your crop or the end of our reins just behind your leg or on his rump to give him even more encouragement to move away from the touch. As your horse walks, practice staying balanced and let your hips move back and forth naturally as they follow his motion at the walk. This will synchronize you with the horse, and both you and he will be more comfortable. It also will encourage him to relax his back and use his hind legs more. You keep the horse moving straight and maintaining speed by using light support with your legs and reins. You can tell if your horse is comfortable and relaxed in the walk if his ears are forward and he is moving along without resistance. If your horse is relaxed, clearly understands what you are asking of him, and trusts you, then he will be easier to work with and enjoy the ride too. If you are unbalanced or heavy-handed, however, your horse will be frustrated and anxious for the ride to be over with and may challenge you in some way. ©2016 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAY 2016

Horse Association & Club News Lakes Distance Riding Association holds its first competitive trail ride of the season at Brighton. As we have mentioned before, this event is not sponsored but supported by BTRA, and is one of several held by outside organizations that we have welcomed over the years. The big BTRA events start in May and our first one will be held in conjunction with our Annual Meeting. We will be electing or reelecting Board members, discussing in detail what we'll be doing this year, and enjoying a cookout. We'll give a report on this event in next month’s column. Work days on April 15 and 16 have put up a manure pit at the trail staging lot. Concrete is going poured on Sat. if all goes as planned. Please make sure you use this instead of leaving your poop in the parking lot! Roger and Waylon, in addition to the manure pit also have installed a grill at the pavilion (the club purchased this) for all to use. They also put hitching rails up at the bathrooms at the trail head and Whitford Lake. Your club dues and camping participation are always working at the Park. Come join us!! FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOC. Hello Trail Riders! As this news is being written, today will be 70 degrees. Riding season is finally underway. Our first big event is this month and all are welcome to attend. It's our Annual Spring Equestrian Camp Out on May 12-15th. This 4 day event is a great deal at $45 for members or $60 for non-members for the entire event. Come all 4 days or whatever you can. We will have enough campsites for all that wish to attend. Pancake breakfast on Saturday morning and a potluck supper that evening are always a favorite! As usual, we will have manure removal, water for horses, outhouse on site, picket poles, pens and corrals are allowed. The cart trail will be open for any drivers who want to bring their carts or buggies. Campfires for the group at night will get everyone together for old and new friends to relax. Our trail includes a variety of terrain, prairie sections, lake scenery, 6 creek crossings, and lots of wooded trails. All are groomed and safe to ride with great trail signage that we have done so much work on over the last seasons. GREAT LAKES DISTANCE RIDING ASSOCIATION Where do I start if I want to try a Distance Ride? A great place to start is by reading our New Rider Information page on our website. You will find a map of willing mentors all over the state there also. These individuals are experienced in the different divisions of Distance Riding and have volunteered to take the time to help you get started. There are several Novice Clinics offered throughout the year to get you started as well. Or if you prefer, you can start out by attending a ride as a volunteer or a rider. What is the difference in Endurance, Limited Distance, Competitive Trail and Novice in UMECRA? More details can be found in the New Riders Handbook, but in short here are the definitions of these divisions: Novice: A great place to start! Novice rides are 15 miles or less and follow the guidelines of the Competitive Trail Ride. Although there may be some experienced riders doing the Novice for one reason or another, in order to qualify for points and awards you must have not completed more than one ride of 25 miles or longer. Riders that do not qualify for points or awards will get mileage only. UMECRA Competitive Rides (Crs): UMECRA's CR's are rides of 25 miles or more and are completed at a 5-7 mph pace. These

BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION When last month's column was being written, the question was asked, “Has spring arrived?” Just recently, the answer was an emphatic and unfortunate “No!” We were experiencing some of the worst April weather in years and were being pelted with cold rain, sleet and snow. Now, a few days later, we're enjoying warm temperatures and sunny skies. Yes! Spring has arrived. BTRA had its first work bee of the season scheduled for April 9th, but guess what? We had to cancel it because of the weather. It was held one week later and we had a good turnout of volunteers who got right to work on the trails. They are now in great shape and ready for the season. Our Trail Maintenance Committee, resurrected and now chaired by Peter Andrews, is going forward at a furious gallop. We are full of new ideas, planning a host of trail improvements, and are working in full partnership with the DNR staff at Brighton. Riders will see re-routed trails, rehabilitation of portions of the trails that have become eroded or washed out, and more and better signage. For example, the major loops in our trail system will now all be named and identified on signs at entry points. This will make it easier for riders to navigate the system and if emergency assistance is needed on a trail, loopdesignation signage will expedite this procedure. BTRA sent two delegates to the 2016 Friends of Michigan State Parks Summit on April 1st and 2nd. This event has been held for several years and is hosted by the Parks and Recreation Division of the Department of Natural Resources. The venue for the event is the Ralph A. MacMullan (RAM) Center at Higgins Lake and it is a beautiful facility. BTRA recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the DNR and we are officially designated as a Friend's Group. That opened the door for us to attend the Summit and we were grateful for the opportunity. The program featured many speakers who presented information that will be of significant benefit to our organization and groups of stakeholders all around the State of Michigan. The DNR is to be commended for putting on this event. By the time this column is read, the first big event at the Brighton Recreation Center will have taken place. Every April, the Great

You will have the option to ride in a group of approximately 4-6 riders. Horses are scored by veterinarians on such factors as pulse, respiration, soundness, fatigue and attitude. Horsemanship is not judged. The winner of the competition is determined by the horse that has the most points at the end of the final vet check. Limited Distance: This division covers distances 35 miles or less. Often referred to as LD, this distance has no minimum time but it does have a maximum time. For example, the maximum time to complete a 25 mile ride is 6 hours. Other distance maximum times are listed on a chart in the UMECRA rulebook. There will be at least one vet check usually near the ½ way point. At the final vet check, the placing of the riders and horses is determined in the order the horses meet the pulse criteria that was set forth by the vet at the pre-ride meeting. Endurance: This division covers distances of at least 50 miles. There will be several vet checks along the way. There is also no minimum time for these rides, but there is a maximum time. For example, the maximum time to complete a 50 mile ride is 12 hours. Other distance maximum times are listed on a chart in the UMECRA rulebook. The finish order is determined in the order that the horses cross the marked finish line. Come ride with us!! Our White River Spring Ride is May 7 and 8 in the Manistee National Forest with distances of 50E, 30LD and 25C miles offered. If you want to visit Hungerford for a day ride, there are (2) Day Use parking areas that are available all year around. Day Use Area #1 can be accessed from the main Hungerford entrance; and Day Use Area #2 can be accessed from 13/19 Mile Road just North of Big Rapids. Riders who prefer to camp over the weekend or a week at a time can camp at the Main Campground (No Reservation - First Come/First Serve). Or you can reserve the Group Campground and bring your family, schedule a birthday weekend, or enjoy some private time with friends. The group campground is reserved at www.recreation.gov. The forest service has future plans to develop a new trail that will add a few additional miles to our trail system. Trail #25 could possibly begin tagging in late 2016 or early 2017. Trail #15 will be temporarily closed to vehicle access to address the hazardous muddy spots. Trail #24 is complete and ready for riders. Riders can access Trail #24 from the Hungerford entrance on 19 Mile and enjoy a short ride or begin from the main, group or day use area for a longer ride. Total 'Horse Trail' miles including Trail #24 are 40.36. There are two versions of the Hungerford map that members will be able to download from the website or receive via email; a new electronic map which has the trails listed by trail numbers and the beta version which can be viewed via a cell phone app. With a trail map in your saddle bag, miles of marked and maintained trails, you are destined to have a pleasant ride. The Family Trail Ride/Picnic is Saturday, June 4th from 11am – 2pm. HTRA members can invite their family, friends, or guest and ride to Joan & Marcie (J&M Camp) to meet with other trail riders for a Hotdog Picnic. The ride from the main campground to J&J Camp takes approximately 1 hr/15 minutes. Riders can stop at J&M Camp to meet and greet; then continue for an additional 30 minute ride for ice cream dessert at the Woodville Store. We are still accepting 2016 membership applications. Welcome Kim Heckmann! She is serving as Maybury's Interim Supervisor until a permanent one can be appointed. She's been with the DNR since 1997, working at Proud Lake as a college student. After graduating in 2001, she hired on as a Park Ranger. Kim transferred to Island Lake for 9 years. In 2012, She was promoted to the Lead Worker at Brighton Recreation. Welcome Mike Cutsinger! Mike is Maybury's Lead Ranger - the man in the field! He originally worked at Maybury when he was a teenager. We have two new members - welcome Bill Gunn and Darlene Trudell! MI COMPETITIVE MTD ORIENTEERING The first ride of the season was a fabulous success considering the weather was anything but pleasant. It was fun seeing everyone saddle up and ride bundled in warm layers. With a light layer of snow on the ground and temperature just above freezing the ride was sure to be a challenge. The beginning of April can be challenging in Michigan and even though it threw them a curve ball they hit a home run. A great big thank you goes to Colleen and Austin Carson and Chris Hubert for pulling this one off. DBarD did a great job of opening up the campground early for us and in return the ride managers decided to make a generous donation to the cancer benefit sponsored by DBarD. With annual individual membership fees for Michigan only $10 and National membership only $25, you are eligible for year end awards and your points are tracked every year. Entry fees at the rides are usually $10 or $15 and you get hours of enjoyment and challenge. There is no better way to connect with your horse than camping and spending the entire weekend together searching for clues in the woods. The added benefit is being surrounded by people who share your love of horses and are always willing to lend a helping hand. Of course, the Saturday evening potluck just brings the whole event together with great food and lots of laughs. New riders are always welcome. Remember, you have to start somewhere and we are there to help if you would like to learn how to CMO. We even had new riders at the first ride of the year braving the weather and proving they were up to the challenge by completing the 5 plate course and getting all the plates. Saturday, May 21st is our Scavenger Hunt Ride. This ride will consist of riding all of our different trails looking for specific objects. There will be a potluck lunch and a bonfire following this event. Camping will be offered for the entire weekend. After that, on Saturday, June 25th we will have our Obstacle Challenge Ride. This ride will have six challenges on 3.5 miles of trails. Each obstacle will be timed. There will be a potluck lunch following the event and there will be camping available all weekend. Our final event of 2016 will be the Circle Ride. This popular favorite ride is one that we cohost with Kensington Trail Riders. It consists of riding the eleven mile loop that connects the two parks. The DNR has held several Management Planning meetings for the new Master Plan for Sleepy Hollow State Park. Several user groups shared ideas, future goals, and how to achievement our goals. There is an online survey for park users to share their experiences, number of visits, and rank their views. No names are to be left. This data will be used to help plan future improvements with the Master Plan. SHTRA hopes to be able to achieve more trail mileage and future camping. Speaking of camping – Don't forget that BOTH RENTAL CABINS HAVE EQUESTRIAN Pickett POLES and connect to the trail network. If you don't have an LQ trailer, are traveling on US-27 , have family members who want to camp without the tent experience, check out the possibility of renting one of these scenic cabins. WESTERN DRESSAGE ASSOC OF MI The Train the Trainers Program held in East Lansing, Michigan on April 19 and 20 was a great learning experience for all who attended the Clinic. Frances Carbonnel and Cliff Swanson, western dressage clinicians from Colorado, packed the two-day session with classroom learning and demonstration riding. Participants came away from the clinic with a much better understanding of western dressage and the many benefits the sport holds for both horse and rider. Show weekends are coming up fast so remember to mark these important dates on your calendar: the WMAR Red, White and Blue show at Mason will be June 4 & 5, 2016, the WMAR State Show at Centreville will be July 16 & 17, 2016 and the Sizzler Show that we co-host with the MApHA will be August 6 & 7, 2016. If you'd like to try something new, we will be offering both Ranch Horse Pleasure as well as Ranch Horse Trail at our WMAR sponsored shows. It was decided that at the June show in Mason, Open Stallion halter classes will be split into Jr. & Sr. with the Mare and Gelding age splits remaining as is. At the Centreville show, ALL open halter classes will be split Jr. & Sr. Earning a little extra money while showing is always a plus, so how about signing your favorite show mount up for the WMAR Incentive program. Prize money is given out at the banquet based on the number of points earned in your division throughout the show

YANKEE SPRINGS TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION Board Meeting Minutes, April 13, 2016 This meeting was held at YS Horsemen's campground starting with a potluck meal at 6:00 pm. Ron Walker called the meeting to order at 6:30. Trail Report: The 4, 6, and 9 mile trails were cleared in March. The next work day which is scheduled for April 23, after the shot clinic a re-route is planned for a section of the 9 mile which currently runs under the power lines, this trail will be moved just into the woods. Ron Walker will contact Tom Chaffee to bring his tractor and leaf blower to the campground on Friday, April 22 to remove the leaves from the campground. We have 20 volunteers this year for the Barry Robaix bike race. YSTRA will receive $40.00 for every volunteer for this race. April 23, 2016 Shot Clinic: Dr. Rachelle Bennecke will be holding a Shot Clinic at Yankee Springs Horsemen's Campground starting at 9:00 am. Please call Dr. Bennecke to reserve a time, 269-377-1222, so we don't all show up at the same time. Bring your dogs for their heartworm checks and shots. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided. Jeanne will pick up 4 dozen doughnuts.

Club Insurance: Insurance has been purchased for the Halloween Event and Judged Trail Ride. Bench Update: Skip Burger will purchase the lumber for 7 benches from the Delton Pole Builders. A date has not been set to start building these benches. Work Bee: There will be a work bee April 23, after the shot clinic. There will be some trail work and some posts to be set for signs in the Obstacle Course also if it's a warm day painting of the kiosk. The 'No Bike' sign also needs to be set on the 4 mile at Hastings Point Road. New Business: Susan Dykstra suggested we start thinking what obstacles we would like to have this year. If any members have an obstacle suggestion, please email them to me, I will present your suggestion to the board. SEWING YOUR OWN RAIL SHIRT, Part 2 by Pegg Johnson By reading the instructions, identify the pattern pieces required to create your garment. The pattern pieces may be listed in numerical order on the first page, or may be listed separately on different pages of the instructions. Once you have identified the pattern pieces required for your garment (child or adult), either mark them in the instruction or write them down so that you know which pattern pieces you are looking for. Now go back to the wonderfully confusing pile of pattern pages. Open it all out so that you have a pile of flat sheets (well as flat as they will get because of having been folded). Begin to look for numbers on the pieces that correspond with what you need. Set those pages aside. Re-fold any page that does not contain a pattern piece that you need. As you fold these pages – insert them into the quart plastic bag. Once you have found all of your pattern pieces, you should be down to 4 or less pages. Now you can rough-cut around your desired pattern piece (keep about an inch of excess paper around your pattern pieces). Do not cut close to any specific size, you want the entire pattern intact – just separated from the massive pages of pieces. This may leave you with some unused pattern pieces with a lot of excess paper attached to them. Trim off and throw away any excess paper from around the pattern pieces, then fold these unused pattern pieces and put into the plastic bag also. Contrary to when many of us were taught growing up, you WILL NOT cut out your pattern size from the original pattern tissue. If the pattern is very wrinkled, iron it so that you have a nice smooth surface to work with. I have two methods for creating your personalized pattern. One or the other may make more sense to you or may be a little easier for you to follow - but they both work. Before you begin either method, lay the BACK pattern piece on your work surface. On the pattern, locate the smallest pattern size. I intend to use the 14, 16, 18 sizes. Since we are using the raw pattern, we need to remember that there is a seam allowance included in the neck marking. Slide your tape measure down a ½ inch from that neck marking. Now measure from that spot down the straight edge of the pattern to the bottom. In my example, I need the pattern to be 24 inches from the neck to the hem. pattern may fall exactly on that measurement, be longer or shorter. Determine what you need to do and make the correct adjustment at the line designated “lengthen or shorten here.” Just fold the pattern to shorten. If you need to lengthen, then you will need to cut the pattern, spread it the necessary amount, insert an extra piece of paper in the space, and then tape or pin together. Make this same adjustment on the FRONT pattern piece and the FRONT FACING pattern piece. When you have completed this task, the front and back pieces should match each other for length from the armhole to the hem. The front facing piece will match the front pattern from the neckline to the hem. Make sure these pattern pieces match up before proceeding.-----------------------------CREATING YOUR PERSONALIZED PATTERN - METHOD 1:______________ Using a colored marker or pen, draw on the front and back pattern pieces based upon the sizing which most closely matches your measurements. For my person, I would use the size 18 hip line, slowly blend it as I go to the waist (size 16) and then slowly blend that line to the bust (size 14). Be careful to follow any curve or shaping that is incorporated in the pattern. (See Figure 3A) Notice that I have not destroyed the pattern and it is still useable for another person or size. All I have

to do is change color of marker that I am using to “create” my personalized pattern. Before marking your sleeve, remember to check for length. Select the sleeve size that matches the bust size used (in my example, I used size 14). Again, remember that there is a seam allowance built into the pattern, so (40)

slide your tape measure down ½ inch. Now run the tape measure down the length of the sleeve pattern to the end. My person's sleeve needs to be 20 inches. Once again, the pattern piece may be just right, need to be shortened or lengthened. Just customize it to your needs. Remember to do the adjusting at the line marked “lengthen or shorten here.” One of the biggest mistakes people make is to lengthen the sleeve at the wrist. The problem arises because they continue to follow the narrowing of the sleeve as they extend the length, not realizing that they are tapering the sleeve so that it becomes too small to be worn. That just leaves the collar to be marked. Again, you will use the size that correlates to the bust size. All you have to do here is mark which size you want to follow.---------------You are ready for the next step. At this point you could cut the pattern on your lines and move on to laying out your fabric. However, if you do this, you destroy the pattern. I really prefer tracing the pattern and saving the original to use over and over. Lay one pattern piece on your work surface. Using your choice of tracing medium (tru grid, tracing fabric, Swedish tracing paper, medical paper, paper bag, newsprint, etc.), lay the tracing fabric over the marked pattern piece. Because you have used a colored marker on the original pattern, you should be able to see through the tracing fabric/paper and create your own personalized pattern by tracing your markings. Before removing the tracing fabric/paper, remember to transfer all of the sewing marks – straight grain of fabric, center, etc. Repeat this for all of your pattern pieces. Remember to mark each newly created pattern piece as to what it is – (front, back, etc), the person it is made for and perhaps even the date.If you understand and like method #1, then skip this next section. CREATING YOUR PERSONALIZED PATTERN - METHOD 2: --------For this method, we are using pure body measurements. When you are going strictly off of measurements, you must remember to add seam allowances. In the previous method, we used the predetermined sizing for the measurements. Those predetermined sizes already had the seam allowance built into them. Lay the front pattern piece on your work or cutting table (sometimes also called our dining room table). Take your bust measurement and divide it by 4. – you essentially have 4 pieces to the body of the shirt. Left front, right front, left back and right back. Therefore, the front pattern piece is ¼ of the total that goes around your body. If your bust measurement was 36, then this

made the adjustment. Just as described in Method #1, you now begin to trace that marking/outline onto your favored tracing medium. When you have traced all pattern pieces, cut them out on the lines. TEST YOUR SIZING__________________ Regardless of whether you used method #1 or method #2, you are now ready to test

number will be 9. Starting from the center front (Arrow in Figure 4), measure from the center front, straight across to the armhole. Determine where you 9 inches end. Mark this point. Take the waist measurement and divide by 4. Again, start at the center front line and measure across to the side seam at the waist. Mark this point. Last – take the hip measurement and do the same thing. Divide the number by 4. Start at the center front where the widest part of the pattern is, and measure across. Mark this point (See Figure 4) These are your approximate size markings. However, since you are creating your pattern, we need a seam allowance, so we need to add ½ inch to our markings. Most times, this will put you near or on an already established pattern size. Now begin drawing a connecting line between all of the End Point marks. (See Figure 6) Remember to follow the shape of the original pattern. You have just created an individualized pattern, made to the measurements you have taken. Do the same with the back pattern piece. (See Figure 5) You will not have to do this with the sleeve, facing, or collar. For the sleeve, facing and collar, select the pattern size that corresponds to the size used for the bust/chest measurement. Divide measurement #4 by 2. your sizing. I prefer to use safety pins, but many people either baste (long running stitches designed to be easily taken out at a later time), or use regular straight pins to temporarily assemble the test pattern. Using your preferred method, attach the side front and shoulder to the side back and shoulder. Then pin the underarm and side seams. If you use regular straight pins, be sure that they run parallel to the sides of the pattern pieces. When finished pinning, you will have ½ of a garment to try on. Once the tracing fabric pattern is cut out (this is why I use fabric and not paper), you can try the test pattern onto the live person. Try the tracing fabric garment on them with the pins on the outside. This allows you to make any adjustments you may choose to do. Make sure that it snugs up to their neck and both the center front and center back are where they belong. This is your chance to determine whether the shirt will fit as you intended. Remember that the tracing fabric has no stretch to it while your Lycra shirt will have stretch. Remember also, that this style shirt is designed to be body hugging. SEWING TERM: NOTCH OR NOTCHES - On some patterns, there are little points sticking out from the pattern lines. These are called notches. Their purpose is to help you align the different pattern pieces. For example: A notch on the front side seam of the pattern piece should line up with the notch on the backside seam pattern piece. If the arm scye and sleeve have notches, those notches indicate (a) where to match up on the arm scye, and (b) a single notch goes in front and the double notch indicates the back of the sleeve. SEWING TERM: STRAIGHT GRAIN OF FABRIC - Straight grain of fabric refers to the way the fabric threads lay regardless of whether the fabric was woven, knit, or otherwise manufactured. There are threads that run up and down the fabric and threads that run crosswise of the fabric. Straight grain of fabric refers to placing your pattern on the fabric so that it “follows” the line of the thread. You can check your accuracy by measuring from the selvage edge (outside edge of the fabric) to the straight grain line on your pattern piece. Following the grain line allows the finished garment to hang naturally and correctly. Not following the grain line could cause the garment to hang askew, warp and twist. improvements have you made? Did you or do you have an expectation that the property will appreciate in value as a result of your improvements and stewardship? 7. How do you keep records? Is there a separate bank account? Do you keep separate files on each horse? 8. What clinics or seminars have you have attended and what publications do you read to help enhance your knowledge of the industry? 9. Describe your efforts to advertise and promote the animals. What actual horse sales have you achieved? These are the types of things a thorough audit might involve. It is prudent to consider these questions and issues in mind in conducting your ongoing operations. Perhaps some of your record-keeping needs to be improved, for instance. Perhaps it would be prudent to have a written business plan, or written contracts with trainers. And so on. Sometimes people are audited simply on a random basis; other times there are red flags that could trigger an audit – such as significant losses or large tax deductions. The best approach is to have a representative meet with the auditor (usually this involves several meetings), and narrow down the issues to the extent possible. Perhaps the auditor will find common ground in some issues, perhaps not. Either way, there is an appeal process that allows the appeal agent to take a fresh look, and often disputes can be settled at that level. Issues Frequently Raised In IRS Audits By John Alan Cohan, Attorney at Law IRS agents are individual people with varied experience and seniority. Often, it is necessary to “educate” an auditor on an industry with which they are not familiar – such as the horse or livestock industry. If you are audited in connection with a horse, livestock or farming activity, the auditor will first want to determine whether the arithmetic matches – whether the amount of deductions claimed, for example, adds up properly. The auditor will usually want to see backup invoices and proof of payment of the various items. Delving further into the substance of the audit, you might anticipate a variety of questions about your claim that the activity is operated for profit (despite perhaps a history of losses, or in the case of startups, little or no history at all). So, what are some of the typical details that the auditor might want to explore? 1. What was your startup year? What research did you do before deciding to enter this particular field? Who did you consult, and what advice was given? What specifically did you find out about making a profit in this field? 2. Describe your operations, i.e., your breeding or racing program, how you select pedigrees, horse shows or races you have entered, and names and qualifications of professional trainers you employ. Do you have a written contract with each trainer? 3. Do you have a written business plan? If not, what specifically is your business plan? 4. What have you done to change your operations to cut down on costs, improve efficiency, or otherwise move towards making a profit? 5. How much time do you expend in the activity, and what sort of tasks do you perform? If you have a day-job, how are you able to put in that amount of time? 6. If your activity is operated on your own farm or ranch property, describe the facilities. What is the fair market value? What
