TEN TIMELY TIPS FOR FLY CONTROL, MOTHER NATURE’S WAY By Karen Briggs, Green Grass Features Flies are one of the worst things about horse-keeping in summer. Not only are they a nuisance, they can spread disease, so controlling them is an important part of stable management. But while you want to get rid of flies, you don't want to poison the environment for your horses, your barn cats and dogs, or yourself -- with a lot of harsh chemicals as you do so. Here are some c o m m o n- s e n s e t i p s f o r working WITH Mother Nature, not against her, as you tackle the Battle of the Bugs this summer. 1. Flies are attracted to moist manure, so clean your horse's stall every day, pick up manure in the aisle of your barn right away, and head out to your riding ring or arena with a pitchfork to pick manure there, too. Position your manure pile a good distance away from the barn, and arrange to have someone pick up the manure regularly (mushroom farms and landscaping businesses will sometimes even pay for well-composted manure). 2. To help soak up excess moisture (and make the manure pile less attractive to the flies), sprinkle a little hydrated or “slaked” lime, available at feed stores, on the pile regularly. This is the same stuff you purchase to help reduce the ammonia odor on stall floors (it goes by names like “Stall Dry”, “Stable Boy”, and “Sweet PDZ”). Slaked lime can be very drying to your skin, you might want to wear gloves when you handle it. 3. Use “barrier” methods of fly control, such as screens on windows and fly masks on

your horse. If you have a horse who is really sensitive to flies and mosquitoes, you can even outfit him with a summer fly sheet and leg wraps for turnout. 4. In the barn, fans will keep air circulating and help keep flies from settling. You can also use sticky traps hung from the ceiling to catch flies – they are inexpensive and harmless to your horse (just make sure they are hung high enough not to tangle in hair or manes!). 5. Another form of fly trap that is safe for humans, pets, and horses is the jar-style which uses pheromones (hormones insects give off when they are mating) to attract flies and trap them. Look for them in feed stores and hardware stores, and follow the directions to hang them in your barn. 6. Try introducing “fly predators” to your manure pile. Fly predators are tiny wasps which prey on fly larvae (maggots) and prevent them from maturing into flies. These wasps are harmless to humans and horses, and can be purchased via mail-order. If you live in a northern clime, look for fly predators advertised as extra-hardy; otherwise they may not survive. 7. Mosquitoes breed in pools of standing water, so get rid of the water wherever you see it. Dump out buckets which aren't being used, pour the rainwater out of old tires, fix leaky faucets, and dump out and re-fill the water troughs in your pasture at least once a week to break the mosquito life cycle. 8. Some people believe that

©2010 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAY 2010

feeding supplements like garlic or apple cider vinegar to a horse will make his sweat smell like the supplement and help keep flies away. Unfortunately, there is no scientific proof that this works. Here's good news, though: fly sprays with an active ingredient called pyrethrin are actually made from a species of chrysanthemum flower and are very safe for the environment, you, and your horse. Pyrethrin (and the synthetic versions of the same chemical, usually called permethrin) breaks down quickly in sunlight and leaves almost no chemical residue. These fly sprays can be very damaging to marine life as well as insects, though, so never dump them down the sink or near a stream. 10. Muscovy ducks are large, funny-looking ducks with red faces. They are also

(24)

fly-eating machines! A pair of Muscovy ducks can cut down the number of flies in a barn by 80% or more. They are good at picking up spilled grain, too, and don't need a large pond to swim in. But there may be a certain amount of duck poop to deal with – and they may also eat your fly predators! That's Mother Nature for you … sometimes she gives, and sometimes she takes away. Have a happy, fly-free summer! COPPER CREEK & MSU WILLIAMSTON, MI – Since the series began, Copper Creek Dressage Series in Williamston, Michigan has enjoyed a special connection with Michigan State University. The highest percentage for all rides will win the award, with one saddle pad awarded for each USEF-recognized show. The award ceremonies will take place on Sundays. Spartan Spirit competitors can be alumni, students, employees or simply supporters of Michigan State University. “We are so happy to have this special award to celebrate our Spartan connection,” said Copper Creek Manager and Secretary Sandy Hunt. “Scott Westerman of MSU Alumni Association is enthusiastic about working with us on this. We're hoping he will be able to come to the shows and make the presentations for us on at least some Sundays.” Copper Creek Farm is located at 3100 Noble Road, Williamston, Michigan. RIGHT TO RIDE PASSES LANSING, MI - On March 25 the Michigan legislature saddled-up and passed a compromise version of the Right to Ride legislation. With concurrence, the measure now gallops to Governor Granholm. SB 578 and HB 4610 are tie-barred legislation to protect public access, use and enjoyment of state owned land in Michigan. The bills received overwhelming bipartisan support in both the Michigan House of Representatives and the State Senate. "Riders come from all over to enjoy Michigan's scenic trails," Senator Brown said. "This is no time to turn away tourists, or to turn our backs on years of tradition in which people of all ages explore our wondrous public lands on horseback. This legislation will bring muchneeded transparency and accountability to trail access decision making." WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

SADDLE UP! MAGAZINE NEWS BRIEFS Together, Senate Bill 578, sponsored by Senator Cameron Brown (R-Fawn River Twp.), and House Bill 4610 sponsored by Rep. Tim Moore (R-Farwell), give the equestrians a deserved voice through the Equine Trailways Advisor y Sub-committee (ETAS). This new advisor group created within the legislation will work with the new Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) to develop a comprehensive statewide trail network for all recreational trail use, which will increase ridership and tourism spending in Michigan. Representative Moore stated that "Tourism and recreation are a strong part of our local economy and Michigan can't afford to chase that business away. We should be working to expand these types of

opportunities in our state, not limit them." "As President of the Back Country Horsemen of MI (BCHM) - Pigeon River & Beyond chapter, the hard work over the past two years and tremendous bi-partisan support has made me humble and proud to stand alongside my members and team up to pass this legislation," says Dick Kleinhardt. "The loss of trail access in recent years is a travesty for Michigan," added Kleinhardt. BCHM represents 330 members and supports the interests of an estimated 80,000 recreational horseback riders in the state of Michigan. The legislation lays out a timeline for the Deptartment of Natural Resources and E n v i r o n m e n t t o re v i e w specific access restrictions by pack and saddle animals previously imposed by the

DNR in State Forests. The process begins with a review of the controversial restriction of trail access to riders in the Pigeon River Country State Forest imposed by the DNR in May of 2008. For info: Dick Kleinhardt, Pres. BCHM, (989) 424-1172 or BCHMI.org@live.com.

WESTERN MI APPALOOSA REG. First off, I need to make a correction. Last month I listed the GLApHC show in Findley as being WMAR approved. It is not....it is only MApHA approved. Sorry for any confusion...here's how the WMAR schedule should look. 2010 WMAR Show Schedule MApHA Spring Show (May 8-9), Mason WMAR (May 28-29) Hastings WMAR (June 12-13) Hastings Show Me The Money (July 23-25) Lansing MapHA Summer Sizzler (August 7-8) Lansing MApHA Classic Show/Futurity (August 27-29) Lansing Plans are coming together very well for the two WMAR shows to be held at the Barry County Expo Center in Hastings. We are looking forward to holding our shows at this fairly new facility. The arenas are absolutely huge with a very nice campground and lots of room everywhere. Be sure to get your stall reservations in to Tracey Marttila ASAP. Jackie Wintjen and I are still looking for some volunteers for the June show. We need a good ringmaster, whether it's for one day or both, in gate and out gate help, maybe an announcer apprentice and helper, and just some general helpers over the weekend to set up games, trail, western riding, etc. The WalMart in Hastings has generously donated a beautiful, big (28 burger capacity!) gas grill to WMAR which we will be raffling off sometime this summer. Be sure to watch our website or contact a board member for more info. WalMart is located close to the Barry County Expo Center so please patronize them while at our shows. Don't forget that we have the WMAR Incentive Fund. There are three divisions, Open Halter, Open Judged Performance and Open Gymkhana. A one time payment of $35.00 and a nomination form is all it takes to apply for each division. WMAR points are counted, with the two WMAR sponsored shows giving double points, and at the end of the year all entry money is divided on a dollar amount per point basis and paid out at the year end banquet. You can contact Tami Vickery for application forms and more information. For up to the minute information, please be sure to check out our website at www.wmarapp.com You will find lots of WMAR information as well as fun photos from last show season. 'til next month...Sharon Clark WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

recommends about 45–60 minutes of brisk walking. 7. DON'T aggressively exercise, as vigorous exercise actually slow down gut motility as vigorous exercise slows gut motility and can lead to exhaustion, Fugaro states. 8. DON'T permit access to feed (hay, grass, grain), as food could exacerbate the problem. Even when colicking, some horses will still want to eat, perhaps even gorge themselves, as a response to pain. 9. DO withhold access to water until the veterinarian can examine the horse and pass a stomach tube. If the stomach is distended, allowing the horse to drink could result in a ruptured stomach. 10. DON'T medicate without your veterinarian's approval, as pain meds can mask clinical signs, making it more difficult to get a timely, accurate diagnosis. 11. DON'T overmedicate. “An appropriate dose of Banamine® (flunixin) as recommended by the veterinarian should last 24 hours,” Fugaro explains. “If the horse is not responding to a painkiller, it is not because you didn't use enough medication, it's because the condition is beyond what that medication can do.” Furthermore, overdosing can cause gastric ulceration, colitis and renal problems. 12. DON'T administer anything via a nasogastric tube or syringe feed mineral oil: If done incorrectly and aspirated into the lungs, the horse could die, warns Plummer. 13. DON'T administer enemas. “The rectum of a horse is extremely fragile and you can get a rectal tear,” says Fugaro. “Rectal tears lead to a secondary peritonitis, which is often fatal.” 14. Plummer. “Separate a mare from her young foal in order to prevent injury to the foal. If possible, move the foal to an area where the mare can still see her baby.” Because this scenario might create more anxiety for the mare, it will be a management decision that requires sound judgment. 15. DO start thinking about trailering preparation at the onset of clinical signs, Keenan says. “Who can you call to borrow a trailer or to help you with transport? Are the trailer tires inflated, is your trailer operable and ready to go?” (It's best if you have a contingency plan for trailering prior to encountering a colic that might require referral. Maintain your truck/trailer so they are ready in an emergency.)

JUDGING ATHLETIC ABILITY IN HORSES By Heather Smith Thomas There are no horses with "perfect" conformation. And there are also some differences of opinion and preference among horsemen as to what constitutes perfect conformation in the equine athlete. But in general, there are some guidelines to follow when selecting a future athlete or champion. Most outstanding athletes are well-balanced individuals in their overall conformation. In the well-balanced horse, the legs fit the body, depth of body and length of leg are similar, the back is neither too long nor too short compared with length of leg, and the underline is longer than the topline. In the young horse that has not yet reached his full, mature height, however, the legs will still be somewhat long in comparison with his depth of body because his withers have not yet attained full height. Regardless of the age of the horse, however, the angles of the body will not change, and these can be judged whether the horse is a weanling, yearling or adult. For optimum athletic ability, the angles in the body (shoulders, hips, pasterns) should all match, and should be of good length and slope for maximum shock absorption and a good stride. No matter what size he is, the horse should have good balance and all his parts fit together. If he is well proportioned and his shoulder angle matches that of his hip, with good overall conformation, he will probably be a good athlete-agile, with good speed and staying power--whether he's large or small. The angle of the hip, rather than the horse's size, length of leg, or height, is what governs his stride. A horse with a long, well-sloped

shoulder and long hip will usually be fast and agile and move with a minimum of effort, compared with a horse that has a short, steep shoulder and hip, with choppy action. A well laid back shoulder (acute angle between shoulder blade and the line drawn from point of shoulder to elbow) permits a greater swing of leg; the horse

can reach out farther with his front feet, with a longer stride. In the hindquarters, too, the sharper the angle, the greater length of hip and more freedom of movement in the legs. A good horse has a short top line and longer underline. The adult horse should be "square", with the length of his body (point of shoulder to point of buttocks) equal to his height at the withers. Legs and body are also equal; the wellbalanced horse is the same distance through his body (top of withers to underline) as he is from underline to fetlock joint. His front legs should be straight when viewed from the side or front/back and his hind legs should be straight when viewed from the back and without excessive angle (sickle hocks) or not enough angle (post legged) when viewed

©2010 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAY 2010

from the side. If there is any deviation from straight, a tendency toward cowhocks (in at the hocks) is always stronger construction than being out at the hocks. Leg action should be freeflowing and fairly straight. The horse with crooked legs and crooked flight path of the feet puts more strain on all leg structures, and when working at speed he may strike himself and seriously injure his legs. Any horse that is "out of alignment" with much

deviation from straight foot flight tends to have problems at fast gaits. A horse that interferes at high speed may crack or break a leg bone or suffer other leg injury because of the way he hits himself. And if feet aren't striking the ground perfectly square (if he lands first on one side of his foot due to crooked leg conformation), this puts extra stresses on certain parts of the leg and may create strain or injury, possibly leading to breakdown or future unsoundness. The horses with more correct feet and legs tend to handle the stresses of athletic exertions with less injury. The better the horse's feet and legs, the longer he will hold up. Most horses are not perfectly straight in the legs, but some types of deviation are less harmful than others. You can often get by with a less than

(34)

perfect horse if he has strong leg construction and good joints, along with a good "engine"--the willpower and endurance (the horseman often calls it "heart") to be a good athlete in spite of minor imperfections. When evaluating the adult horse, a slightly pigeon-toed horse may sometimes be a better risk as an athlete than the toed-out horse. In neither deviation are the joints lined up perfectly, but the pigeontoed horse often seems to be able to stand the stresses on the legs better than the splayfooted animal. Also, the horse with toes slightly turned in won't strike himself, since he tends to paddle outward when in motion. By contrast, the toed-out horse picks his feet up to the inside, winging them inward, and tends to hit his other leg if the foot flight comes very far inward toward the opposite limb. When evaluating a young horse, however, keep in mind the fact that feet and leg angles often change a bit as they grow up. Many foals are toed out at birth but straighten as they grow and fill out, gaining more muscling in the chest/breast area. Almost all toed-out foals will correct themselves by the time they are weanlings or yearlings, whereas a foal that is pigeon toed at birth is less likely to straighten. Sometimes surgical correction is done (periosteal stripping or transphyseal bridging) if a foal is excessively abnormal at birth, especially if he is excessively in or out at the knees or fetlock joints and the owner is worried that he will not straighten as he grows. No horse is perfect, but usually the one that fits together with a pleasing sort of fluid motion as he travels, will be a good bet as an athlete, especially if his feet and legs are well constructed for efficient movement and minimum stress. FOAL IMPRINTING: Yea Or Neigh? Part II By Karen Briggs, Green Grass Features

This article is continued from the April issue of Saddle Up. THE NEWS FROM FRANCE The results of the studies, which were published in D e v e l o p m e n t a l Ps y c h o biology and the Journal of Comparative Psychology, demonstrate that foals handled using “imprinting” techniques during the first hour after birth were actually more suspicious of approaching humans and tended to hide behind their dams more than did foals in a control group that had not been handled. This difference in behavior was evident even at several months of age. The imprinted foals were also less social with other foals, and less likely to explore their surroundings or stray from their mothers, even at six months of age. Henry explains that, though we equate frequent physical contact with good parenting, horses in fact show affection differently from humans and other domestic animals – but in common with many other hooved animals. Physical interaction is much less a part of their bonding process than we generally assume. Suckling aside, mares lick their offspring only occas-

ionally. Newborn foals are licked by their dams for an average of 30 minutes or less during the first four hours after birth. In more mature animals, mutual grooming takes up only 2% to 3% of a horse's time, and normally is restricted to the neck and withers. Even when horses sniff each other, direct skin contact is not common. Given that, it's a little less surprising that horses might perceive the invasive human contact inflicted on foals during the imprinting process as unnatural and negative. The researchers also noted that, during the part of the study in which a person was motionless in the stalls, the foals' degree of interest was influenced by the amount of interest the mare showed in the person. That observation led to a second study where imprinted foals were compared with those who had minimal human interaction themselves after birth but who observed positive interaction between their dams and human handlers. The foals whose dams had been gently handled, given treats, and groomed for a few minutes per day, in their presence, were significantly more trusting, the study showed. They were more approachable by humans,

©2010 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAY 2010

even strangers, and were far more likely to express curiosity and interest in their handlers. "It seems that the best way to establish confidence with a new foal is through good contact with its mother," says Henry. "Clearly, to create a positive horse-human relationship, it's not a good idea to intervene in the natural progression of postnatal events, nor in the early mare/foal relationship." But the simple act of brushing a mare for a few minutes per day might make a world of difference. "This procedure is simple, takes little time and can easily be applied to any dam-foal pair," the study authors say. "It is not intrusive and presents no risk of disrupting mare-foal bonds." Houpt agrees, “Grooming the mare is just as effective [at habituating foals to human contact] as trying to imprint a

foal. So why not do that instead? It's much easier than tr ying to hold down a struggling newborn. “I think it takes foals a couple of weeks to figure out who is who, both in their own herds and on the human side. Working with a foal for a few minutes every day during that period, in my opinion, is better than that intensive process of hitting a newborn hoof 75 times.” It's certainly food for thought for breeders, as foaling season kicks into gear. DEVELOPING RIDER FORM & BALANCE Parts VI & VII By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 PART VI By riding in proper form, you can achieve balance and more importantly, help your horse stay balanced. In this article, we will continue our quest to achieve balance through proper rider form by using poles on the ground to improve balance. As in the previous exercises, a consistent, well-schooled horse is a must. He should be tacked up with saddle, bridle and leg protection. Practice in a large enclosed area. Use either a Western or English saddle. Think center-squarebalanced as you do these exercises very slowly. And remember to breathe! Your shoulders should be down and in line with the middle of your hips. Keep your elbows in front of your body with hands in front of the saddle. Your back should be straight and your hips sitting forward on the saddle. Your legs should hang directly under your hips with your toes up. Multiple Poles - On a Curve: As you learned from the previous exercise of going over poles on a straight line, it is challenging to stay centered, balanced, and relaxed when the horse's gait becomes bouncier from picking up his legs to clear the pole. Once you have mastered the poles in a straight line (set the poles a minimum of three feet apart at their center and adjust for length of stride and speed of gait), a more advanced exercise is to place the poles on a curve. Staying balanced and in position on a turn adds to the degree of difficulty. The horse and rider will have the

natural tendency to pull to the outside. The rider must stay centered, square, and with his/her hips moving to stay balanced. To start, arrange two poles on a curve. The poles should be placed so that they radiate like the spokes of a wheel along the perimeter of a curve. The rider should try to go over the middle of the poles at the trot both with and without stir rups. After you feel comfortable using two poles, add another one, and then another. If the horse starts hitting the poles, then the rider must change the horse's speed so that he lands with precision in the area between the two poles. If the speed is too slow, the horse will step on top of the poles or hit them with his heel. If the speed is too fast, the horse will hit the poles with his toe. An assistant on the ground observing you ride the poles will be able to help you make decisions about whether you need to increase or decrease the speed. Once you have found the correct speed for going over the poles, it will be a challenge to your aids coordination to maintain the same speed before, over, and after the poles. It is also very important to stay on the center of the measured line over the poles. If you go to the left or to the right of the center of the poles, you change the distance between the poles, and the horse will hit them. When you have the correct speed and you are comfortable with several poles on a curve, try doing some of the upper body exercises that I

©2010 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAY 2010

gave you as you trot over the poles. Poles on the ground are both fun and challenging. Be imaginative and set them in several areas in your arena, paddock or pasture. Practice your balance and controlling your horse precisely before the poles, as you are going over them, and after the poles. Change the location of the poles every few days or once per week. Remember that if a pole moves when your horse hits it, you will have to reset it to keep the distance correct for your horse's natural stride. Use these exercises with the poles during daily practice, as a warm up to competition (where space permits), or as often as possible. Have fun practicing. If you do them properly and consistently, you will see positive results in your riding. I guarantee it! PART VII Learning to ride without your reins is the best training you can do to improve your balance. With that in mind, let's tackle some exercises that are done when the rider is “on the longe,” when the rider is mounted on a horse while it is being longed by a helper. Without the reins for security and balance, a rider can use this technique to build confidence and establish a more correct form. These exercises can be done in either a Western or English saddle. A Western saddle will help you feel more secure and confident. However, using an English saddle for these exercises is a good way to build better form, balance, and confidence. Many of the same exercises that I already have explained in this series can be done on the longe line. I now am going t o s h a re s o m e s p e c i a l variations that take advantage of the rider not having reins for help in balancing. The same techniques for properly doing

(38)

these exercises still apply. To start this lesson, the rider is mounted on the horse. The helper is in position, holding the longe line that is attached to the horse. As the rider uses her aids to ask her horse to move forward into the walk, she should tie a knot in her reins. If riding Western, put the knot over the saddle horn. The rider should be able to do this without looking. Note: the rider is responsible in this lesson for keeping the horse out on the circle and for speed control through the use of seat, leg, and voice aids. The helper can assist in keeping the horse on the circle by “tossing” the longe line towards him if he falls in. The rider should start at the walk with her arms at her sides. Let the horse walk a few circles on the longe to allow the rider to feel comfortable being on the longe and not having any rein contact. The next step is to extend the walk and begin the exercises. While you are doing the exercises, your helper should critique your form. Upper Body Rotations: While at the walk, extend both arms straight out to your sides at shoulder height. Slowly twist at the waist so that one arm extends in front of you while the other arm extends behind. Then rotate so the opposite arm comes forward. You should feel a nice stretch in your torso. Tip: To do this exercise properly, the rider must continue to look straight ahead and relax her upper body. Her legs should stay relaxed with her hips moving with the horse and her weight in the saddle. With this exercise, it is important not to twist the lower body or swing the legs in motion with the arms. The stretch we are looking for comes from keeping the lower body relaxed and in position while the upper body rotates from the waist. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Four-Point Arm Circles: Extend both arms straight out in front of you. Keeping your left arm in front of you, bring your right arm up overhead. Hold this position for a few seconds, and then rotate the arm behind you with the palm down. Hold. Rotate the arm down to your side. Hold, and then return it to the starting position in front of you. Next, do this sequence with the left arm, keeping the right arm straight out in front of you. Tip: This exercise is more challenging and the rider should take her time and continue to breathe to help with relaxation. Watch the tips of your fingers to get the full benefit of this exercise. Again, do not twist the lower body or swing your legs as you move your arms. Yo u r b a l a n c e w i l l b e challenged by being longed on a circle. You can make this important training time fun by

doing lots of different exercises for every part of your body. Start with arm exercises, as I have in this lesson, and it will give you the confidence to ride without your reins. If you do get off balance, you have your saddle horn or the pommel if you ride English, to grab on to until you again find your balance. We have several training videos that will help you with this series of exercises on the longe: Dressage Principles, Vol. 1, Part 1 and Hunt Seat Equitation, Part 1, include the above exercises. Also, Longevity Training, Par t 5, “The Ar t of Longeing,” Exercises for Equestrians, Part 1, and my b o o k , H e a d t o To e Horsemanship are excellent resources. ~ On Our Cover ~

Thank you to all the ladies and their horses that took time from the LMHA show for a brief photo shoot for our May 2010 cover. A special thanks to Delaney Debois. Delaney was so impressive with her color coordinated show attire that we decided to use her photo exclusively for our cover. Her horse, Tabasco has wonderful blue eyes and she accentuated her show attire around them. A very wise choice, the effect was breathtaking. Hope you did well in the show ring, your attire was top notch!
