MICHIGAN PONY EXPRESS Michigan's Otsego County Mounted Division and the Michigan Sheriffs Mounted Association are co-hosting the 51st Annual Pony Express event. The Pony Express brings in mounted division members from all over the state of Michigan and raises money for children and families in need. One way we raise money is through the sale of the official Pony Express letter head. After composing a message on the letterhead, and placing the stamp on the envelope, it will be carried by mounted division members on horseback, just as brave riders carried the mail across the west many years ago. Once it reaches the designated post office, it will be cancelled by a commemorative Pony Express stamp and mailed to whom it was addressed. Money raised through the sale of the letterhead and our auctions will go to the worthy recipients. This year we have chosen two recipients. Lots of times they have expenses that insurance cannot cover and that is where we help them! Whether it be for gas, prescriptions, room rent on hospital trips, or meals. We are trying to make a difference in their lives. We have a group of 100 riders to participate this year! We are also looking for donations of products, large or small. Some can be listed on our raffle tickets, or as table-top raffle items. We also need items for our riders' welcome packets. Donations are tax deductible. We are a non-profit based organization and money raised goes to the families in need. Our two recipients for the 2012 Pony Express are Gavin and Blair.
Gavin is a smart, energetic 8 year old. He was in youth wrestling for two years. Last year he placed in all three tournaments. He likes games, riding his bike, and playing with his little sister. When he grows up, he would like to be a dentist. On May 23rd, 2011, Gavin started having pain in his upper back. Within a couple of days the pain was keeping him up at night. He was taken to the walkin clinic and saw his pediatrician, but they could not find anything wrong. By May 29th he had to be taken to the emergency room because he was having trouble walking. They did some tests but still wanted to send him to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. He was transported to have more tests and, after many, a tumor was found at T1 that was putting pressure on his spine. They had to do surgery to find out what it was and to release the pressure. The diagnosis was Ewing's Sarcoma, which is a malignant (cancerous) bone tumor composed of cells derived from blood-forming tissues of the bone marrow. It usually occurs in patients under 20. Gavin's treatment plan is 10½ months of chemo and 6 months of radiation. He receives his chemo and radiation the Helen DeVos Hospital. His chemo will consist of traveling to Grand Rapids every two weeks. He also goes to the Munson Infusion Clinic in Traverse City to have his blood counts checked weekly. In September of 2011, they reran all the scans and his tumor is gone! However, Gavin remains in clinical remission at this time. Blair turned 5 on November 30, 2011. Instead of having a birthday party like his family had planned, Blair spent the day at the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. Three weeks before he had been diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia. He began, and will continue undergoing, chemo-

therapy treatments for a total of six months – for most of which he will be hospitalized. His immune system is severely compromised and the chemo treatments have a side effect of causing him high fevers. Blair's mom and dad, along with his 2 year old sister, live just outside of Tustin, MI. His dad, Ryan, was working on a farm at the time of diagnosis, but has since lost his job. Ryan is trying to start his own business, but that is difficult now that he is spending so much time at the hospital. Blair likes to have his father with him in his room. The doctors say hope for remission is good, but 6 months is a long time to be in the hospital, 2 hours away from home. If you would like to donate items or learn more about the Pony Express fundraiser, please contact Jessi Sheteron of the Otsego County Mounted Division at (231) 587-5517 or (989) 619-3260. IEA ZONE 5 CHAMPIONS Amelia Jacksy (left) from Maumee, OH, Lauren Taylor (center) from Sylvania Oh, and Samantha Rothman (right) from Temperance, MI, shown with Coach and Trainer Donna Rothman, have each qualified for the 2012 National Finals of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA). All of these riders are members of the Stonehaven Equestrian Team, which operates out of Temperance, Michigan. The girls competed in shows during the 2011-2012 school year throughout Zone 5 of the IEA. Zone 5 encompasses the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. (30)
They each accumulated enough points during the season to compete at first the Regional Finals and then the Zone Finals. Their subsequent performance at these shows earned them a trip to the National Finals that were held in Syracuse, New York, April 20-22. The Interscholastic Equestrian Association was founded in 2002 and was organized to promote and improve the quality of the equestrian competition and instruction available to middle school and high school students. Its mission is to set standards for competition, and to promote the common interest in safe riding instruction and sportsmanship. The IEA includes over 5,000 riders, and several hundred teams competing to qualify for approximately 300 riding slots at IEA National finals. Coach Donna Rothman, stated that “this was the first year our team has competed in the IEA and we started late in the season. That made the accomplishment of these riders even more impressive.” The IEA competition format is unique in that riders compete on unfamiliar horses chosen randomly at the beginning of each class. Coach Rothman likes this approach because it opens up competition to riders who would otherwise not be able to show on the traditional circuit. Coach Rothman explains that to join an IEA team an individual does not need own a horse. Likewise, they can join an established IEA team regardless of where they ride or take lessons. Participants do not need to attend a particular school. All they need to have the is the desire to compete on horses, do the best job they can, and have fun with their fellow team members. For more information on joining IEA teams please call Stonehaven Farms at 734-854-5825 or visit www.stonehavenfarms.net and log on to the IEA page. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM
Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs QHHA PHOTO SHOWS The Quarter Horse Halter Association (QHHA) was recently formed to facilitate an "at home" venue for halter competition for AQHA horses in three classes: Registered Quarter Horse, Registered Foundation Quarter Horse, and Open Foundation Quarter Horse. Four age divisions within each class are also offered. With the high price of gasoline, and with the busy schedule many horse owners have, the photo shows are a great way to still compete and earn points and awards - without having to leave home. Remember the "Conformation Clinics" some horse magazines used to run where photos of horses were judged for halter? QHHA operates similarly with its halter competitions. You simply take three photos of your horse (front, back, and side) prior to the entry deadline for the show. Your entry will then be judged along with others in your class by a professional horse judge. Three photo-shows are held throughout the year, which are part of the annual circuit - with points going toward year-end awards. Entry fees are $20 per class for QHHA members and $25 for non-members. 1-6 place rosette ribbons per division class. Additional awards are given for first place. Annual membership in QHHA is $20 and includes a nomination in one division for a year-end award. Additional nominations are $15 per division. Like many traditional horse show organizations, QHHA offers year-end awards and other award programs like Register of Merit (ROM). Each year Top-ten awards are given in each class within a division. The top three horses in each division class per circuit year will be named Circuit Champion. 2012 Circuit Shows: • Spring: Entry deadline - June 1.
• Summer: Entry deadline Aug. 1 • Fall: Entry Deadline Oct. 1 For more information email: quarterhorsehalterassociation @gmail.com, or go to https://sites.google.com/site/qu arterhorsehalterassociation/

A RIDE TO REMEMBER As Earth renews itself with new life and treacherous snowstorms disappear from the Cascades, Tracy Ann Delp picks up her Coast 2 Coast for Cancer trail with her horse Sierra and her canine best friend, Ursa. While most cancer fund-raising seems to focus on research efforts for human cancer, Tracy Ann's ride has a different purpose. She wants to raise funds to relieve financial burdens felt by families having human or animal loved ones with cancer. She rides for those she knows and those she has never met, as evidenced by her horse trailer which displays the names of loved ones lost to cancer. Tracy Ann experienced immediate financial difficulties when her dog faced cancer. Then again, her life turned tumultuous when her mother, a colon cancer survivor, developed terminal pancreatic cancer and began to suffer the financial burden as well. The idea for this ride came to her on her birthday the year following her mother's death. On Mother's Day, 2011, Tracy Ann set off on the coast to coast journey by putting her toes in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of her home state of Washington. The journey will end when she takes off her boots to dip her toes into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Delaware. Tracy Ann has encountered some hardships along the way, but also has experienced unbelievable kindness from total strangers. She would love others to make this their journey as well and

IEA is a national organization modeled after the IHSA program hosted by colleges and universities around the country. High school and Middle school riders compete with the opportunity to compete at regional and national competitions. Students can win prizes and scholarships. The 2008 National Finals had more than $125,000 of scholarship money granted to IEA riders. At IEA competitions, riders do not supply their own horses or tack. The horses, saddle and other tack are all provided to the riders at the show. Essentially, the horse is new to the rider, and the scores are based upon horsemanship and equitation, not the horse. IEA is open to riders grades 6-12 at any riding level. Give us a call to be part of the team! You don’t have to board here to join.

This month we're ready to add another exercise to further our collection work. Before we begin the new exercise, however, I think it is important to review why collection is important. Collection is the compression of your horse's body from poll to dock, and it is the natural next step once you have achieved balance. Collection occurs when the horse rounds his body like a Slinky Toy so that his hindquarters are lowered, his back is lifted, and his shoulders and poll are elevated. From this body position, the horse can perform maneuvers with a higher degree of athleticism than he could in a longer frame. Because our new exercise is a variation on stride adjustments, let's review why stride adjustment is an important exercise in training collection. It works because in order to lengthen and shorten his stride, the horse must engage his hind legs and push from behind. That rounds his back and elevates his shoulders. Trans-itions within a gait also help the flexibility, strength, and responsiveness of his joints and muscles. This enables him to hold this configuration for longer and longer periods of time. Circle-In-A-Circle Warm up your horse, and then practice the stride adjustments on a circle that you learned in
the previous newsletter. When you get your horse to instantly decrease or increase his stride in response to your aids at the jog, graduate to the lope: 1. On a large (at least 60-foot) circle to the left, pick up a medium lope. Use your acceleration aids to ask your horse to extend his stride. In case you have forgotten your seat and legs are your acceleration aids, with the seat being the primary aid. Lean back slightly with your shoulders, rotate your hips slightly forward, sit deeper in your saddle, and push on your back pockets in rhythm with your horse's stride as though pushing a swing higher. Squeeze lightly with both legs to further engage his hindquarters and open your fingers to invite him to increase his stride.
with his hindquarters—the introduction of collection! Be ready with your seat and legs to drive your horse forward if he should stall out and break to a trot. With practice, you will come to feel him suck back as he is about to break gait; and you will be able to correct him before he actually breaks by using seat and leg pressure.
shortening of his body causes the horse to relax, and it makes his entire frame supple. Practice several circles in both directions. Incorporate this stride-adjustment exercise, along with the one in the previous newsletter, into your daily program so that you will be ready to move on to lateral work for more collection.
3. Once you have completed the small circle, drive your horse forward to lengthen once more. You are aiming for a collected, balanced frame, with your horse's hindquarters lower than his withers, and his hind legs driving deep beneath his body. The repeated lengthening and
You can practice the circle-ina-circle at the walk and jog as well as at the lope, and you can practice the previous circle exercise at the lope. Feel free to mix things up! The more you do this, the more interesting and better it is for both you and your horse.

2. When you reach the starting point of your circle, sit back and sit deep, and use your stride-shortening aids as you guide your horse onto a small circle. Your aids to shorten your horse's stride are: lean your shoulders slightly back to drop more weight into your seat as you cease to follow his rhythm; maintain contact with your legs (to keep his weight shifted rearward), but relax any pressure; and close the fingers on your outside hand to reinforce the slow down message. Because you have asked for the speed reduction with you seat and legs, rather than by hauling on his mouth, the result should be a rounded back and deep, reaching steps

and your 'correction' is a meaningless reaction. Far from gaining the horse's respect, you just get filed in the 'unpredictable crazy person, not to be trusted' category. Depending on their personality or mood of the day, some horses are more or less demanding of your attention. The other day, a friend entered the arena while I was riding a spooky seven-yearold. The mare is not really all that nervous but, when she was younger, she learned that spooking got her out of work. As my friend passed through the opening, the mare shied halfway across the arena. It was not the time to say hello my friend in any way. I kept my attention on the mare and put her right back to work by riding her forward from my leg to my hand for five minutes or so before I said hello to my friend. Even then, the minute I said hello, the mare ignored me again. So I worked on keeping her rhythm in the gait and keeping a forward connection. She demands my full attention stride by stride. When a horse like a golden oldie is less demanding of your attention, that does not let you off the hook. We have some reliable school horses like this that will start testing their rider as much as 20 strides before they will try to pull something. An aware rider picks up on their tiny signals and reminds them of the task at hand. You can almost hear them saying to the oblivious rider, “Did you see that? How about this? Notice what I'm doing now?” When there is no response from the rider, then they duck across the arena to get closer to one of their buddies, or change the gait without being asked, or do whatever they would like to do because they know their rider's attention is somewhere else and they can get away with their antics. You must keep your attention on your horse at every moment whether you are grooming him in his stall, leading him some-where, or riding. You should pay full attention to ANY horse whenever you are within one of his 'strike' zones. I remember an incident when a woman was standing in front of a horse's stall while her
DON’T TEXT AND RIDE By Nancy Wesolek-Sterrett, Dressage Dept. Head, Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre Distracted driving causes injuries. The National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration reports that 20 percent of vehicle accidents in 2009 involved distracted driving. A governmentsponsored study of commercial drivers found texting created a 23 times greater risk of a crash. The Centers for Disease Control defines 3 types of distraction: • Visual – taking your eyes off the road, • Manual—taking your hands off the wheel, and • Cognitive—taking your mind off what you are doing. What has this got to do with horses? Whether or not you are guilty of all three distractions because you’ve answered your phone while riding, I observe riders allowing distractions of one sort or another to interrupt their relationship with their horse all the time. Think back to the last time you had any horse-related injury, large or small. You will probably recognize that distraction was in play. Everything we do with horses depends on our ability to keep our attention on our horse and to continually bring it back when it wanders. Distracted riding makes us more accident prone for the same reasons distracted driving makes car drivers more accident prone. When you are with a horse, you must be with him proactively, paying attention moment to moment as you are working with him from the ground, paying attention stride to stride while you are riding. Faith Meredith tells her students to take anything on their mind when they come into the arena and leave in it a corner. They can pick it up again on their way out. But while they are there, they must be 100% with their horse. When you are with a horse, you must constantly monitor his: • Emotional feel that day, in that situation, in that moment, • Energy level that day, in that situation, in that moment, and • Attention level that day, in that
situation, in that moment. You start by assessing the horse's body language from the moment you open the stall door and you continue monitoring his feel and energy and attention level until the moment you put him away. You pay close attention to the horses' body language, his general attitude, and his response to you. And you stay aware that, from his side of the encounter, the horse is paying close attention to your body language, your voice, your touch, and whether you are fully present with him or out to lunch visually, manually or cognitively. Ron Meredith calls this being with your horse stride by stride and teaches 'heeding,' a method of groundwork that helps students be with their horses moment to moment. I remind my students that when they first encounter a horse, he immediately categorizes you as lion or lamb. Do you walk into the stall timidly or aggressively? Are you confident and calm? How does the horse react to whatever you are projecting? Does he pin his ears or turn his hindquarter toward you? Does he turn to face you? Does he come forward calmly to greet you? Does he run to the back of his stall or hide in a corner? While you are with your horse, you need to be directing the horse at all times. You must proactively direct a behavior or action you do not want BEFORE it starts rather than defensively reacting after it happens. If your inattention allowed the horse to take a stride you did not intend or misbehave in some way, 'correcting' or 'punishing' the horse after the fact is a defensive tactic. It may make YOU feel like you are 'doing' something to teach the horse. From the horse's standpoint, however, it only makes you an aggressive lion. In his mind, your inattention simply allowed an opening that he went through, just as he might when dealing with horse herd dynamics. He did something horse- logical to him

friend was inside with the horse. The woman was focused on her conversation with her friend so she was completely taken by surprise when the horse reached forward and bit her on the face. A lot of people know stories about someone kicked by a horse in cross ties when they walked up behind or alongside the horse. If you groom your horse in the stall, do not let him wander as you follow. Take time to get that halter and lead rope so you can control the horse's movements and stay in the safety zones alongside him as you groom. Ron Meredith tells a story that epitomizes total concentration on your horse. His training mentor was working a horse on a cow when someone ran over to the arena yelling that the trainer's house was on FIRE. Ron's mentor never took his focus off the horse or the task at hand. He never said a word, just kept riding as though he had not heard the dire news. Only when he finished and took the horse off the cow did he turn to the man and simply say, “Call the fire department.” We are all guilty of attention lapses. I can give you a personal example. On an incredibly busy day, I used a headset to do a telephone interview while feeding my horses. Definitely multitasking and definitely not 100 percent attention to the task. As I lifted his hay, my stallion grabbed a mouthful and yanked hard, shaking itchy hay bits (lots) down into my shirt. There was no reprimand. He was simply being a horse-logical opportunist. The fault was all mine. I just had to deal with the discomfort until I could get a shower. This is an example where only my pride was hurt. And it helped inspire this article. But being proactively attentive means being much less accident prone. It also means far better communication between us and our horses. Paying attention, like everything else we do with horses, is a learned skill. The online article archives at meredithmanor.edu contain lots more tips on heeding groundwork, safety zones, and riding stride by stride. Start practicing today! WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM
Horse Association & Club News
BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS The riding season is underway and warm weather activities have started at the Brighton Recreation Area. We've begun our Work Bee program and already have the trails in good shape. Some fallen trees and limbs which landed on our trails over the winter months have been removed and we're waiting for the weeds and brambles to grow a bit more before we begin trimming. A number of riders have been covering our eighteen miles of trails and they report most everything is looking good. Our Board of Directors has been busy with event planning and other activities, and we recently (re)elected officers. Our current roster is as follows: President, Russ Spicer; VicePresident, Gayle Pawl; Treasurer, Darlene Harris; and Secretary, Mark Delaney. Our first Open Ride of the season was held on March 25th and those of us who came out for it enjoyed a beautiful day. We all agree that in many ways spring is the best time to ride; the temperatures are in the pleasant range and most of the bugs are yet to be hatched. Let's all hope that the “winter that wasn't” and the unseasonable warmth we had in March doesn't portend a super-hot summer. We're very excited about the new addition to our staging area. A project that has been in the planning stage since last year came to fruition on April 13th (a lucky day) when our new pavilion was erected. Several BTRA members were at the scene and we watched a very efficient crew from the manufacturer put up the structure in just a few hours, and it looks great. It's situated just right, so it will give us shade
from the sun throughout the day and of course, provide us with shelter if it's raining. Some picnic tables will be placed under the pavilion and we can't wait to put it to use. Of course, it will really come in handy when we hold our big event in May. As we reported last month, we're inviting our friends from the Ionia Trail Riders and other neighboring trail riding organizations to come visit us on the weekend of the 19th-20th. A lot of riders and their horses will be occupying sites in the horseman's campground beginning Friday night, the 18th. The following day will feature a poker ride and cook-out, followed by socializing around a bonfire and live music. Folks who don't have to head out early Sunday morning will have time for some informal riding. Anyone who drops by will be welcome. We also reported last month that some changes are coming to the Brighton Rec Stable. The day-to-day operations have been taken over by Amy Carlson, who is relieving Christy and Ryan Wilson. Amy tells us that the horse rental operation and boarding will continue unchanged, and youth groups are still welcome. Special events will remain the responsibility of the Wilsons. The Stable phone number is still the same: 810534-5063. As always, BTRA welcomes all visitors to Brighton. For more information on our organization and details on events, visit www.brightontrailriders.com. ~ Mark Delaney, BTRA Sec.

MI APPALOOSA HORSE ASSC. Hi Everyone. It is with a sad heart that I relay the following information. Melvin Marvin has passed away. The family will be holding a get together in his memory to celebrate his life and to reminisce on Sunday, May 6th at 1:00PM at 9647 Wilbur Hwy. Eaton Rapids, MI 48827. If anyone would like to make a donation in his honor, Aggie has told us to have it go to the MApHA scholarship fund. Spring Show is just around the corner. Get your memberships paid up and don't forget to nominate your horses. Due to Mason increasing the camping costs it will now be $45/ weekend at spring show. Any lay-overs will now pay $20/horse and $20/camping. This is a three-judge show, one judge will be randomly selected by the ApHC for double points. The youth will be holding their annual chili and baked goods fundraiser. All youth members should bring a pot of chili and some baked goods. Contact Cathy Wood or Kelly Ekovich for further details. The board would like ideas from the membership for awards including high point awards next year. If anyone has suggestions please contact any of the board members. If anyone has interesting news for the newsletter please contact Jill Baker at 517-336-8144 or jillbaker75@comcast.net. Until next month, Jill Baker MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING Wow! It seems like we should be in the middle of summer by now and our first ride is still a couple of weeks away. The first ride is at Ortonville Recreation
Area on May 12th and 13th. If you have questions about this ride please feel free to call Steve and Vera Keim at (810) 793-4558. The very next weekend the CMO crew will be at Ionia Recreation Area for three days. Wild and Crazy CMO will Friday May 18th to Sunday May 20th. If you have any questions about that ride, Rebecca Ferris will help you out at (616) 308-0722. If you would like to see the schedule for the entire summer please visit our website at micmo.org. If you are planning on attending one of our rides and staying in the campground, please call ahead of time for reservations and tell them you are with MiCMO to get a site near the group. Don't forget that on Saturday rides most of the club gets together for a potluck at the ride managers site. If you are joining us for the potluck you just need to bring a dish to pass, a place setting and something to drink. This is a great time to sit around the campfire and share stories about your day searching for plates in the woods. This year many of us got an early start on conditioning our horses, trails and campgrounds have opened early for the season, and all the expos have given everyone a jump start. These factors are certain to lead into a great summer of riding, laughing and competing. If you have been to a CMO before be sure to join us again this year, if not make this your first year to treasure hunt on horseback. Honestly I can say that after showing open shows for several years and trying dressage and hunter, riding CMOs has been the most fun I have had with my horse. Maybe it's my team, maybe it's the relaxed atmosphere, maybe it's being out in the woods, or the simple fact that you don't have to bathe, band and clip your horse for every weekend, but CMO has been the revitalization of my desire to work towards something that is fun and
