June 12,13 & 14, 2015 Otsego County Fairgrounds, Gaylord, MI Each year a Pony Express Ride is held in Michigan on the 2nd Saturday of June. This date was proclaimed by the governor of Michigan, William Milliken. The ride, sponsored by the Michigan Sheriff’s Mounted Association (MSMA), features more than 200 mounted posse-men carrying hundreds of letters in relays along various routes across the state. The Otsego County Mounted Division (OCMD) will be hosting the 2015 Pony Express Ride at the Otsego County Fairgrounds, in Gaylord, MI. This is a fundraising event where you can purchase a Pony Express letter and actually have it carried by Mounted Sherriff’s Officers along a designated route, and passed from rider to rider along the way! Every year the Pony Express event raises funds to assist an individual in need. This year’s recipients include 11 year old, Jessica, who was born with Spina Bifida, and Jack, who is two years old and has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. The Otsego County Mounted Division is 501-3 (3) non-profit organization. Donations can include sending a letter, financial, bag raffle, silent auction items, or advertising items to include in the rider welcome bags. Pony Express riders will begin carrying mail along Otsego County roads, starting at 7:00 a.m. on June 13th. If you wish more information about this event, please contact Vicki Reinhardt, Lieutenant OCMD, at reinhardtsantlerridge@yahoo.com PONY EXPRESS HISTORY - The Pony Express officially lasted from April whipped off of one saddle and tossed onto the next 3, 1860 to October 26, 1861, although a few scattered runs were made one. American Horse Council’s 2015 National Issues Forum Forum to Feature “Protecting and Promoting the Horse” The American Horse Council has announced that its theme for this year’s National Issues Forum, sponsored by Luitpold Animal Health, is “Protecting and Promoting the Horse.” The issues that the horse industry has faced over the last decade have changed, but there are several consistent challenges. These include federal regulatory challenges, attracting newcomers to horses and equine activities, maintaining equine activities that we enjoy, and welfare initiatives to protect our horses. But as with any challenges, they also create opportunities. The Forum will focus on how the industry is dealing with them. Of great importance to the horse industry is its relationship to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “Most horse owners don’t understand how and where and why the Department of Agriculture intersects with the horse community,” said AHC President Jay Hickey. “Federal authority – and protection and assistance - extends over the horse industry not only on the breeding farms, but also on horses when they race, show and are used for recreation.” The AHC’s National Issues Forum will focus on answering such questions with highranking representatives from USDA responsible for the programs that affect the horse industry present to explain how they view the industry, what they do, how federal programs are changing, and what the Department’s new five-year plan has in store for the horse industry. Programs like the American Horse Council’s Time to Ride and its 2015 $100,000 Horse Challenge and others are underway. Updates will be provided that can teach attendees how they might institute similar programs to attract people to the horse industry in its various forms. The Unwanted Horse Coalition is celebrating its tenth anniversary and plans a ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAY 2015

special update on its current activities and initiatives over the last decade to protect horses. More importantly, this will provide an opportunity to review how the horse community has instituted new programs for horses during that period. This year’s National Issues Forum will be held on Tuesday, June 16, in Washington, DC during the AHC’s annual convention, which will run from June 14 to 17 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Capitol Hill. The AHC’s convention will also include the AHC’s Congressional Reception, the Congressional Ride-In, meetings of all AHC committees and the Unwanted Horse Coalition. As always, the AHC’s annual meeting brings together the horse industry’s leaders, stakeholders, service providers and individuals to discuss common issues of importance. The AHC’s Congressional Reception will be Tuesday night, June 17, on Capitol Hill. This is an opportunity for the horse community to visit informally with Members of Congress to renew old friendships, make new ones, and discuss industry concerns. The annual Congressional Ride-In will take place all day Wednesday, June 19. The Ride-In allows members of the horse community to meet with their elected representatives and federal officials to discuss important issues affecting them. All members of the horse community are encouraged to participate, even if they don’t attend the AHC convention. The Ride-In puts a face on the $102 billion horse industry and the millions of Americans who are part of it. Congress deals with various issues that impact the horse industry, including taxes, gaming, immigration, welfare issues, access to trails and public lands, diseases, and interstate and international movement of horses. This is an opportunity for the horse community to come to Washington in force and meet with their Senators, Representatives, and staffs. The Ride-In literally illustrates the goal of the AHC to “Put More Horsepower in Congress.” More information on these Forums and the entire AHC annual meeting, including registration and hotel information, can be found on the AHC’s website, http://horse council. org/events.php or by contacting the AHC. (28)

About the American Horse Council As the national association representing all segments of the horse industry in Washington, D.C., the American Horse Council works daily to represent equine interests and opportunities. The AHC promotes and protects the industry by communicating with Congress, federal agencies, the media and the industry on behalf of all horse related interests each and every day.

Federal Legislation Introduced to Prohibit Slaughter of American Horses Federal lawmakers today, April 22, 2015 introduced legislation to prevent the establishment of horse slaughter operations within the U.S., end the current export of American horses for slaughter abroad, and protect the public from consuming toxic horse meat. The Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, H.R. 1942, was introduced by Reps. Frank Guinta (R-N.H.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Vern Buchanan (RFla.), and Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.). The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), The Humane Society of the United States and The Humane Society Legislative Fund announced their enthusiastic support for the legislation. Last year, more than 140,000 American horses were slaughtered for human consumption in foreign countries. The animals often suffer long journeys to slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico without adequate food, water or rest. At the slaughterhouse, horses are brutally forced into a “kill box” and shot in the head with a captive bolt gun in an attempt to stun them before slaughter—a process that can be inaccurate due to the biology and nature of equines and result in animals sustaining repeated blows or remaining conscious during the kill process. “For centuries, horses have embodied the spirit of American freedom and pride,” said Rep. Guinta. “To that end, horses are not raised for food – permitting their transportation for the purposes of being slaughtered for human consumption is not consistent with our values and results in a dangerously toxic WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs product. This bipartisan bill seeks to prevent and end the inhumane and dangerous process of transporting thousands of horses a year for food.” “Horses sent to slaughter are often subject to appalling, brutal treatment,” said Rep. Schakowsky. “We must fight those practices. The SAFE Act of 2015 will ensure that these majestic animals are treated with the respect they deserve.” “The slaughter of horses for human consumption is an absolute travesty that must be stopped,” said Rep. Buchanan. “This bipartisan measure will finally put an end to this barbaric practice.” “Horse slaughter is an inhumane practice that causes great pain and distress to the animals, and poses numerous environmental and food safety concerns,” said Rep. Lujan Grisham. “The vast majority of my constituents oppose horse slaughter. I'm proud to support the SAFE Act to ban this cruelty once and for all." The SAFE Act would also protect consumers from dangerous American horse meat, which can be toxic to humans due to the unregulated administration of drugs to horses. Because horses are not raised for food, they are routinely given hundreds of toxic drugs and chemical treatments over their lifetimes that are prohibited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in animals intended for human consumption. Those drugs, although safe for horses, are potentially toxic to humans if consumed. In December 2014, the European Union (EU) announced its suspension of imports of horse meat from Mexico after a scathing audit of EU-certified Mexican horse slaughter plants, which kill tens of thousands of American horses each year. Additionally, the discovery of horse meat in beef products in Europe shocked consumers and raised concerns about the potential impact on American food industries. The ASPCA, AWI, and The HSUS encourage the public to contact their U.S. representatives and urge them to cosponsor the SAFE Act, H.R. 1942, in order to protect America’s horses and overall consumer health from horse slaughter.

Horse Shows by the Bay and Stadium Jumping, Reach Amicable Agreement Horse Sports by the Bay, Inc., producers of Horse Shows by the Bay (HSBB) is pleased to announce that Stadium Jumping, Inc., has acquired the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) licenses to produce horse shows in Traverse City from July 1-26 that will be called the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival. Alex Rheinheimer, the owner and manager of HSBB, said, “I’m pleased that the tradition of horse shows in Traverse City has found in Stadium Jumping and its owner, Michael Morrissey, a promoter with a terrific reputation and national experience. The region is in good hands for years to come. It was a difficult decision to move on from Traverse City, but that decision is easier knowing that Stadium Jumping has expanded its presence to Michigan, and I’m confident that Traverse City will be wellserved by the change.” Morrissey mirrored the sentiment. “Stadium Jumping is very excited about expanding its operations to this part of the world, where the enthusiasm of the community and the horse owners is apparent,” he said. “We come on the heels of over a decade of exceptional and awardwinning shows by HSBB and look forward to meeting the high standards that the community has come to expect.” The USEF played a pivotal role in the transition, and Rheinheimer and Morrissey reiterated that the parties’ agreement reflected “USEF’s unwavering commitment to advancing the best interests of the exhibitors and competition calendar, as well as equestrian sports in general.” From 2004-14, Rheinheimer, Horse Shows by the Bay founder, and her dedicated team of professionals produced one of the most popular summer show circuits in the country. HSBB hosted thousands of horses annually from across the country and regularly received the industry’s top awards. For four consecutive years, the HSBB (29)

Hunter/jumper series placed in the North American Riders Group Top 25 ranking list and was chosen by the United States Hunter Jumper Association membership as the Best “AA” Horse Show in Zone 5. Additionally, the National Show Hunter Hall of Fame included Horse Shows by the Bay as a Top 10 Hunter Show in 2013. Over the course of the decade, Horse Sports By the Bay, Inc., also produced rated USDF/USEF dressage shows and NRHA sanctioned reining events in Traverse City, bringing horsemen of many disciplines together to enjoy top competition in a resort atmosphere. "I’m happy for the local community that toplevel equestrian sport will remain in Northern Michigan,” said Rheinheimer. “I can't thank everyone enough, including all of our staff, exhibitors, sponsors and fans for supporting me and ‘Team Horse Shows by the Bay’ all of these years. It certainly takes a lot of dedication and perseverance from so many to be as successful as we were. For everyone's unwavering commitment, I will forever be grateful and humbled.” Rheinheimer, a USEF R-rated Jumper judge, will continue to officiate and manage horse shows in Michigan and nationwide and looks forward to producing the HunterJumper Association of Michigan annual spring shows at the Waterloo Hunt Club, April 28-May 18, 2015.

Michigan Deptartment Of Agriculture & Rural Development, Equine Herpesvirus (EHV, EHV-1, EHV-4) Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) is a viral disease of horses and other equidae. The disease can be caused by several different strains, but most commonly type 1 which causes respiratory disease, abortions, and/or neurologic disease, type 3 which causes coital exanthema, a venereal disease resulting in vesicles/pustules on the genital area of both male and female equidae, and type 4 which causes respiratory disease, especially in weanlings, but can rarely cause abortions, too. The neurologic form of WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs type 1, also called Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy, and the respiratory form of type 1 and type 4, called Rhinopneumonitis, are reportable in the State of Michigan. The disease is transmitted by direct contact with ill equidae via respiratory or reproductive secretions, but also can be spread indirectly via contact with people, tack, buckets, vehicles, and other items that have had contact with ill animals. The best way to prevent the disease is via vaccination. Biosecurity is also very important. Horses and other equidae entering the premises (new horses and horses returning from events) should be quarantined from resident equidae for 4 weeks. Pregnant equidae should be kept away from young equine as they are the population most likely to become ill with the respiratory form. Ill equidae should be isolated from healthy equidae and either be cared for solely by a designated caretaker or cared for after healthy horses. Individuals caring for ill animals should wear protective gloves, boots, and clothing when caring for those animals to avoid spreading the disease to other equidae. All items in contact with ill animals should be cleaned and disinfected before contact with other equidae. Equine Herpesvirus-1 (strain 1) has been an emerging disease as of late, especially in the neurologic form. Horses with the neurologic form of the disease may develop incoordination, weakness, paralysis, recumbency, or even death. The vaccine does not protect from this form of the disease. Suspected or confirmed cases of Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy and Rhinopneumonitis should be reported to the MDARD office at 517-373-1077.

Horse Association & Club News BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION April has finally brought Spring to Michigan. The grass is green and growing (time to get the lawn tractor fired up) and the leaves are starting to peek out. Since the weather has been behaving, the action is getting hot at the Brighton Recreation Area. In addition to more and more riders hitting the trails for informal outings, we just had a big event on the April 11th weekend. This was an Orienteering Event and it drew so many participants that the campground and staging area were nearly full. Although this event was not sponsored by BTRA, it was held with our full support. We always welcome trail riders and groups to our home trails, knowing that they will have a good time and act responsibly. Another event, even bigger, is scheduled for April 18th and 19th. This is the annual Competitive Trail Ride and again, it’s not directly sponsored by BTRA but definitely has our support. We know the campground will be full and overflow camping will be available for the many riders and horses that will be descending on the Recreation Area. This event couldn’t be held last year because Ol’ Man Winter just wouldn’t get out of town. This year, thank Goodness, he behaved and packed it up when he was supposed to. BTRA events are also coming up and May will be highlighted by one we’re calling the “Celebrate Spring Ride.” This event used to be held in September but we decided to change things up a bit. What will remain unchanged is the program which features a ride to the home of a BTRA member who lives just off the trails, where a delicious lunch will await the participants. We’ll give more details on this in next month’s column. No matter what brings riders and their horses to Brighton, they will enjoy trails that have come through the winter surprisingly well. Where problems did exist and some work was needed, they have been brought up to tip-top shape by a number of our members and friends. We didn’t even have to schedule a major work bee this spring. So, we couldn’t have asked for a better start to the 2015 riding season. Come visit our staging area, campground, and trails which offer some of the best riding that Michigan has to offer. Mark Delaney, BTRA Secretary FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOC. Hello Trail Riders! Spring is here and the beautiful weather is bringing riders to our trails in growing numbers. We just had a ride/potluck ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAY 2015

on Sat. April 10th with a huge turnout. Good thing we have a BIG staging area at the trail head. It's easy in and easy out for everyone, no matter how big your trailer. The trails are in good shape already, ready to be enjoyed. Our new pavilion was utilized for the potluck and it was awesome not to be sitting in the sun any more after a long ride. We have plans for more improvements this year including new trail signs, hitching rails around the pavilion and 3 outhouses, a new sign kiosk and trail improvements just to list a few. Check the website calendar for work days as you can earn volunteer hours for credits on reduced camping fees for next year. We will have had our Spring Campout already as this is published. More to come on what is sure to be another success at our Park. If you missed it, please try to schedule our Annual Fall Campout on your list of places to ride this year. The date is September 17-20, 4 days, 3 nights at a flat fee cost of $45 for members and $60 for non-members. Reservations suggested, but not required. A horse and pony cart trail will be available again this year. Potluck and auction on Saturday night for all to enjoy. Contact Toni Hess 269-781-9688. Please check out our website for the 2015 calendar of events and trail updates, etc. at www.fchfa.org or visit us on Facebook under “Fort Custer Horse Friends Association.” Any other questions, call Nancy 269-967-3613. See you on the trails! Toni Strong, Secretary, FCHFA GREAT LKS. DISTANCE RIDING ASSOC. What is the difference between Competitive Tr a i l ( C T R ) a n d L i m i t e d D i s t a n c e (LD)/Endurance? In CTR, the riders cover a specified distance in a given time. Ride times are at the ride manager’s discretion with 25 miles in 4.14 hours, including a 40 minute vet hold, being the minimum allowed time. CTR’s require a rider to maintain a maximum pace of 5.5-7 mph on the trail. Every horse/rider team starts out with 400 points. which is a perfect score and points are deducted from there based on comparisons to the pre-ride observations of fatigue, lesions & muscle soreness. Ride time, lameness, pulse, and respiration are judged against a set scale. The goal is to cross the finish line at exactly the specified time, (there is a 10 minute safe window where no points will be deducted) and a completion is given up to one hour past the specified time. LD rides are between 25-35 miles. Endurance (32)

rides are those of 50+ miles per day. Total completion time per day (including vet checks) for 25 miles is 6 hours, for 50 miles is 12 hours, and for 100 miles is 24 hours. The LD winner and subsequent placings are determined by the horse that pulses down to 60 bpm the fastest while also being sound at the trot. Endurance ride placings are based on the order of finish of horses that meet the completion criteria for soundness and pulse rate which are set per the vet’s requirements for that ride day and who are thus deemed fit to continue. Before any horse starts a CTR, LD or Endurance ride, they are required to pass a pre-ride vet check for soundness. During the rides there are mandatory vet checks where horses are deemed fit to continue or not based on soundness and pulsing down within a set time. In the sport, every precaution is taken to keep the horses safe and healthy. Our ride season has started and continues on with two rides in May. The first is the White River Spring Ride in Hesperia, MI, where you will ride in the wonderful freshness of spring in the Manistee Forest the first weekend in May. Choose your ride from distances of 25, 30, 35, & 50 miles. After that, our first ride of the season held in the Upper Peninsula, the Grand Island Ride, is May 23-24. On this ride you will travel the Bay de Noc Grand Island Trail in the beautiful Hiawatha National Forest, a trail rider's paradise, which stretches from Lake Michigan to Lake Superior. Rides of 25 and 50 miles are offered. June 13-14 is the White River Summer Ride in Hesperia, MI where you will experience the Manistee National Forest in the beauty and warmth of summer. Rides of 25, 30, 35, & 50 miles are offered. And next up is the wonderful Hopkins Creek Ride in Manton, MI, June 27-28, which is held around the southern spur of the Shore to Shore trail. You will choose from distances of 10, 25, 40, and 50 miles with the 10 mile fun ride offered both Saturday and Sunday being a great way to dip your toes into distance riding. The rest of the GLDRA ride season has rides all over Michigan, from Marquette to Battle Creek, and even includes a multi-day ride on the historic Shore to Shore trail. So check us out today, www.gldrami.org, and get ready to experience the trails in a whole new way! HIGHLAND TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION Tour The Trails of Highland – Sunday, May 17th! Are you ready to ride? The Highland Recreation Area has a trail for everyone. We will have maps with the trail WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Horse Association & Club News difficulty levels to ensure the best riding experience possible. If you are new to Highland Rec and don’t want to go out alone, one of our members will be glad to show you the trails. The versatility of our park is what makes it great. Our West loop is geared for the more athletic horse and rider with varied elevations and breathtaking views. The West loop has actually been expanded with an extended trail that leads to Cooley Lake Road. Our East loop has sections geared towards older horse, less experienced riders, or someone who just wants to mosey along and enjoy the scenery. The beauty of trail riding is that there is no right or wrong way, just your way. Explore the trails to see the spring wonders like wild flowers, birds and dogwoods that will hopefully be in bloom. As of this writing, the Cedar Creek Trail is not completed. However, HTRA has been assured by park management that alternate accomm-odations or special access will be made for the weekend to complete our trail loop and also provide access from the camping area. A group of us will be camping Friday and Saturday night and would love for you to join us. Reserve your campsite by logging onto the DNR website. We invite you to join us for one or both nights. If you want to try and stay together, I would suggest sites 23, 24, 25, 22, 1, 2, 4, 6, 7. That is the front half of the park and closest to the water. Registration begins at 9AM at the horse staging area located in the Highland Recreation Area off M-59 in White Lake Twp. We will be having fun drawings for prizes, hot dogs, chips, cookies and salad lunch: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. ($7.00 donation). Should you have questions, please contact Donna Snyder (810) 955-7976. HUNGERFORD TRAIL RIDERS ASSOC. There’s no better way to enjoy Hungerford Trails than to trail ride and camp with your friends and family. Huron-Manistee National Forest at Hungerford trails offers the perfect environment for camping and trail riding when campers choose to reserve a weekend at the Hungerford Group Campground. The Group campground area holds a maximum of 64 people. Each site can accommodate 1horse trailer, 2-vehicles, and 8-people. There are over 35 miles of horseback riding trails, 10 miles of bike trails all on 6,500 acres that riders can explore. In addition to the Group Campground, Hungerford provides a variety of camping and trail riding options for horse enthusiasts consisting of weekend or week long camping

at the main campground, group camping at the group campground, and Day Use areas for riders who chose to enjoy the trails for a few hours. Reservations for the group campground are done online at www.recreation.gov and search ‘Hunger-ford Equestrian group campsite.’ The campgrounds open May 1st-October 31st; but the trail system is always open. Current members and new riders to Hungerford are invited to join us for our 2015 Riding Events. The 2nd Annual Trail Riding Competition begins April 1st. The competition is called “HTRA Derby Awards Program” and riders are encouraged to keep track of their trail miles by the number of hours or miles they trail ride at Hungerford. The riding derby is offered to HTRA members. Trail miles/hours accumulated only on the Hungerford Trail system are eligible for this competition! In 2014, the competition was well received with riders completing over 1,500 miles on our trail system. The 2015 competition begins April 1st through October 17th. Members are eager to hit the trails and begin recording hours/miles for the 2015 competition. For questions about the competition or to receive the form, members can email Marcie Law at marcielaw @yahoo.com. The annual Spring Meeting/Workbee is scheduled for Saturday, May 9th at Noon at the main campground. This is an opportunity for current members to network and invite new members to hear about HTRA plans for the upcoming riding season. During this time members can renew their membership and prospective members are encouraged to sign up to join us in our summer events. Immediately after the meeting, volunteers will maintain their adopted trails and clean up debris or broken tree limbs that may have fallen during the winter. Visit our Facebook page at ‘hungerford trail riders association.’ The HTRA executive board looks forward to seeing you on the trails: President - Michael Simcoe, Secretary - Joan Balk, Treasurer - Marcie Law, Community Director - Karen GreenBay, and Trustee - Laurie Archbold.

MI COMPETITIVE MTD ORIENTEERING What a great weekend to start the 2015 season off to a running start. A great big thank you goes to Cindy Hotz for hosting the ride at Brighton Recreation Area. With questionable weather the week or two before the ride, I am sure she was nervous about how it was going to turn out. Fortunately, the ride was honored ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAY 2015 (33)

with sunshine and sixty degrees. The winners of the short course for Sunday were The Little Buckaroos who managed to find all five plates. Team Heart came in second place for the day. The long course team winner found all ten plates to earn the top spot. Congratulations goes to The Trail Stompers who must have worked hard to find every plate because I heard plate 32 was a challenge! Our fearless president rode alone and still managed to come in second place with nine plates found. The object of Competitive Mounted Orienteering is to find the hidden plates in the shortest amount of time. Many times perseverance will pay off because finding all of the plates automatically puts you ahead of teams who are unable to find all of the plates. So although this is a speed event, you must use skill and sometimes a little bit of luck. The team who finds the most plates will be placed first. Often there are several teams who find all ten plates, in this case the team who completed the course with the shortest time will win. Making the decision to move on from a plate that you cannot find will save you time but will put you behind a team that was able to find that plate. They don’t call it the thinking horse sport for nothing. I hope that we see some more new riders at the next CMO coming up on May 16th and 17th. We will be riding at Ortonville Recreation Area to help support the trails and the horseman’s campground there. If you would like more information regarding this ride please contact Steve Keim or Vera Kraft at 810-793-4558 or email them at fletchrider@netzero.net. All rides are posted on nacmo.org under ride schedule by selecting Michigan rides. You can also ask questions and see updates on our Michigan Competitive Mounted Orienteering Facebook page. Five Tips for a Successful Spring Turnout It’s easy to ensure your horse receives ample nutrition while enjoying the pleasures of grazing on spring pasture. After a long, snowy winter in many parts of the country, people and horses alike are eager to get out and enjoy spring warmth and sunshine. Pastures are greening up, and it’s time for horse owners to open the barn and let their horses dine al fresco. “It’s tempting to just let horses out and allow them to graze for as long as they want,” said Dr. Karen Davison, equine nutritionist, Purina Animal Nutrition. “But it’s important to introduce horses to pasture grass in a way that doesn’t invite issues like gastrointestinal upset, laminitis or weight gain in alreadyoverweight horses.” Dr. Davison shares five tips for horse owners to help ensure a successful and healthy spring turnout. 1. Take it slowly. Introduce your horse to spring pasture gradually to avoid any abrupt dietary change, which can cause serious problems such as colic, founder or laminitis. Dr. Davison recommends starting horses on spring pasture anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour once or twice a day then increasing that time by five to 10 minutes each day until your horse is in the pasture for six hours. Once they are out successfully for six hours, they can stay out all day. 2. Prevent gorging. Try feeding your horse a full forage or hay meal before letting it out into the pasture to avoid turning them out on an empty stomach. Then when they start grazing, they’ll take things a bit slower. Another method is to introduce a grazing muzzle, which allows the horse to enjoy the pasture, but prevents him from taking large mouthfuls of grass. 3. Meet your horse’s nutrient requirements. Early-spring pasture grass is very nutrientdense and has a high water content but is low in fiber. On the other hand, more mature grass has more fiber but fewer nutrients. Ideally, horses should graze on grass that is somewhere in the middle. Especially if your horse is coming off the winter slightly underweight, make sure you provide them with some hay to meet its forage requirements. Providing supplemental grains and other feeds at a higher feeding rate may also be necessary. For those horses needing to maintain or lose weight, a ration balancer can help ensure your horse is still receiving adequate vitamins, minerals and protein at a lower feeding rate (usually one or two pounds per day) while receiving the majority of their calories from pasture. 4. Know your horse’s body condition. Once your horse is unblanketed and/or sheds his winter coat, you can tell if he is too thin, too heavy or just right going into spring. A body condition scoring chart will help you determine your horse’s body condition. On average, it ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAY 2015

takes an additional 9,000 calories per day to gain 1 pound of body weight, so consider adding a concentrated feed and possibly a nutritionally balanced fat supplement to an underweight horse’s pasture intake. If your horse is overweight, increasing exercise, feeding a ration balancer and/or possibly utilizing a grazing muzzle while the horse is on pasture can be great solutions. 5. Work with your veterinarian. Always consult your veterinarian when making any drastic changes in your horse’s diet. Early spring and late fall are always good times to check with your veterinarian to ensure your horse is going into the new season on a healthy note. Being mindful of the benefits and potential concerns of spring pasture will help ensure your horse enjoys great spring weather, and great spring grazing, to the fullest. Andy Andy is a 14 year old Friesian gelding and is used primarily for trail and long distance rides. A lot of people thing that Friesian’s don’t have endurance or speed, but Andy can ride 12-13 miles in one shot, no problem. He keeps up easily, and will outrun most other horses. About once or twice a year, I take him to local dressage events, which he usually places 1st or 2nd even with other riders on him. Andy originates from Bit Of Class horse facility, Battle Creek, MI, which is owned by Taleeka Bennet. Photo/story submitted by Mike (Andy’s owner), Sand Lake, MI

HOW TO FEED A SEVERELY NEGLECTED RESCUE HORSE by Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. When we can offer a safe, caring home to a severely neglected horse, everyone in the horse world cheers. If you have recently adopted a rescue horse, let me first commend you for your actions. Saving a horse that is in desperate need of care and nursing him back to health can be one of the most gratifying experiences a horse owner can have. But you must be committed to giving him a lot of time and attention. The transition period is critical. He'll need to be moved in and out of pasture throughout the day, fed hay nearly every couple of hours, and given frequent supplemental meals until he gets to where he can hold his own. If your horse is very thin due to starvation, you will want to proceed slowly and with caution, giving his body a chance to adjust to change with each step. Some horses are in such poor condition they are unable to eat. In this extreme situation, your veterinarian will use a stomach tube to feed the horse. This is a short term procedure with the goal of getting your horse interested in eating again. Ulcers can complicate the rehabilitation process. Retired race horses almost invariably have ulcers. Your veterinarian may prescribe an ulcer medication, but this can only be used for a month or so. The three long term components of healing an ulcer are: chewing on hay or pasture at all times, plenty of water, and reduction in stress. Your ultimate goal is to allow your rescued horse to graze freely, as much as he wants, on hay and/or pasture. You'll want his forage to include a legume such as clover or alfalfa. But take your time — you can't just put him out on pasture right away if he's been severely deprived. No matter how gratifying the sight of him grazing 24/7 will be, you must allow time for his digestive tract to adjust to the influx of food. The microbial population in his hindgut is not adequate for fiber digestion; too much, too soon and he may colic or founder. Here is my recommendation for an 1100 lb horse (his normal weight): • Give him a probiotic, at a double dose, every day for approximately one month; then reduce the dosage to a maintenance level. • Start with 1 lb of grass hay every two hours, or pasture grazing for 30 minutes with ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MAY 2015

an hour break in between. At night, leave him with 4 lbs of hay, plenty of water, and a plain, white salt block along with granulated salt, offered free-choice. • After 3 days, increase the amount of hay to 2 lbs per every two hours and give him 8 lbs of hay at night. • By the end of two weeks, he should be able to have hay available free-choice or graze on pasture 24/7. Be sure he has enough at night to last him throughout the night. There should be some hay left over in the morning. • Starting at week three, add alfalfa to his hay ration. Start with 1 lb per day for 3 days, and add one more pound every three days, until you reach a total of 8 to 10 lbs per day. If you're not able to obtain alfalfa hay, get hay cubes. Break them into small pieces and let them soak for a few minutes. Feed them as a snack throughout the day. • Also starting at week three, you'll want to begin feeding him 6 small meals each day. You can use a commercial senior or performance feed that contains 14-16% protein, at least 18% fiber, and at least 8% fat. Each meal should contain: • 4 cups feed (weighs approx. 1 lb or .5 kg) • 1/4 cup (60 ml) flaxseed meal (stabilized, commercial product is best) • 200 IU Vitamin E (you can get capsules in your local pharmacy) • Probiotic (double dose, spread over 6 meals) • 500 mg of Vitamin C Gradually decrease the number of meals, every two weeks, but increase the amount of feed in each meal so that by the end of one month, in addition to a full ration of forage, you are providing two to three meals per day, with no more than 4 lbs of feed per meal. Maintain supplements and if your horse is older than 16, provide additional vitamin C. The upside to the time and attention - in addition to seeing your horse regain his health and vibrancy - is that you will get to know your new horse very well, and together you will enjoy many good years ahead.

Peggy Brown has created a visual lesson for all riders. Wearing a custom-painted “skeleton suit,” Peggy shows how the rider’s body works when riding in dynamic balance (balance in motion) with the horse at all gaits, in English and Western Riding and Jumping. This “inside view” clearly shows when a rider is straight, balanced, and using their body well. It’s also easy to see what happens when Peggy demonstrates common riding faults and how they affect the horse and rider. Many riders (and their instructors!) recognize their own habits and can see how common riding problems can be addressed by understanding how the body works. Seeing is believing!
