Does your association have a Mission Statement? We are a Non-Profit organization dedicated to the promotion and advancement of Arabian and Half-Arabian Horses. We host four shows each year, offering a wide variety of classes that provide the perfect environment for starting a young horse or rider, as well as a strong level of competition for more experienced equestrians. What year was the association founded? 1986, we are one of the largest Arabian Horse organizations in Michigan. What is the average number of members? Approx. 200 Does your membership run January to December? Yes. What breed/discipline does the association focus on? Arabian and Half-Arabian horses. Do you have a Nat’l. affiliation? Not at this time. How many events do you hold each year? Four shows. Where are they normally held? Locations vary. Is there a youth division? We do not have a Youth Division, but do offer classes broken out by age group. Is there an amateur division? No, classes are split by age groups and owner-to-ride and we also offer open classes that allow trainers to compete. Are there daily high points? We offer weekend highpoint for main arena and dressage classes. Are there year end awards? We provide year-end awards for almost every class we offer. IONIA HORSE TRAILS ASSOCIATION (I.H.T.A.) Ionia Horse Trails Association officially began on July 5, 1986 with a meeting being held at the Horsemen’s Campground at the Ionia State Recreation Area. Les and Kay Fawley of Ionia were the contact people. The goals were to create a group for a united voice to communicate with the DNR, and to protect and promote the use of the Ionia Recreation Area by horsemen. These targets obviously took as the group continued to grow and apply itself to the Ionia Park. In 1999, Ionia Horse Trails Association was formally granted 501c3 status by the IRS. Since that time, there have been both changes and improvements in the horse trails at Ionia. We’ve had a few different park supervisors, as well as changes in the leadership of our 100% volunteer group. In very early 2016, our current supervisor, Trevor McGinn was appointed to the Ionia State Recreation Area. This has signaled a new era at Ionia. We now have a park supervisor dedicated to growing horse usage at Ionia and doing all he can to improve the facility to create a destination that truly engages horsemen of all levels. Ionia Horse Trails Association has developed a strong partnership with McGinn, and we strive to engage our peers with fun, uncomplicated, yet interesting events to bring more of them to our park. We will continue the original mission of this organization: To Preserve and Protect the Horse Trails and Campground at the Ionia State Recreation Area.

OUR PURPOSE The purpose of this organization is to promote continuous growth in programs fostering horsemanship education, sponsor activities to encourage interscholastic participation and to have cooperative adult-supervised leadership (coaching) for all students in grades 5 through 12 who are desirous to participate regardless of race, creed or national origin and meet the Association rules and regulations (By-Laws).

OUR GOALS Throughout Association leadership and coaching, it is our goal that the student members derive whatever enjoyment and benefits possible as a result of participating as riders in horsemanship education programs and interscholastic competition. The MIHA and Coaches will involve each equestrian student (male and female) to the extent possible in team competition. The MIHA and Coaches will provide situations where each equestrian team member can be exposed to cooperative working experience that leads to common group goals. The MIHA and Coaches will provide each equestrian team member with the opportunities to experience good leadership, fair play, horsemanship, sense of honesty, character, pride and good sportsmanship at all times. The MIHA and Coaches will always provide, conduct and host equestrian interscholastic programs with proper instructions, coaching methods, conditioning rules, health, safety and welfare of each participant.

MOUNTED ARCHERY – The domestication of the horse 5000 years ago has carried us through many miles, many labors, and many disciplines. Our partnership with the equine for transportation, labor, as hunters and warriors is nothing short of remarkable. Mounted archery has a rich tradition and history of over 2,000 years that spans the globe. In North America, our revitalized tradition is that of Native American Plains hunters and warriors. Across the globe, even further back, mounted archery originated with the Mongols and other cultures throughout Eurasia . While horses as transport, and arrows as weaponry have been transformed in modern times to vehicles and bullets, the strength of our steeds and formidable art of primitive archery can never be replaced. In a world where technology seemingly connects while simultaneously dividing us from our rich history, many of us choose horseback archery. Today the sport is practiced in dozens of countries. Compete with mounted archers across the globe without ever leaving your home course in an online international rank system. And you may also compete in person. The sport of mounted archery, founded in the U.S. in 2007 by Lukas Novotny, focused largely on representing the United States in international horseback competitions in places like Turkey, Korea, Poland and others. In the U.S., the sport had largely been fixed in the southwest throughout the last decade. It is only recently that it was established in the Midwest through marketing, outreach, training, events, and competitions sponsored by Midwest Mounted Archers and Michigan Mounted Archers, otherwise known as MMA; named after mixed martial arts and our Michigan and Midwest roots. Mounted archery is considered the mixed martial art of the equestrian world. MMA has hosted over a dozen mounted archery events in the last two years – the first to do so, bringing mounted archery to the masses in Michigan, Indiana and more, training aspiring mounted archers from five states to grow the sport safely and ethically. MMA has also created the first progression of training for those not only aspiring to play and compete, but to teach in the field, utilizing best practices of leading organizations. Mounted archery uses live ammo. We utilize safety practices of national organizations with demonstrated success across industries of archery, horseback & mounted archery. While we all learn archery on the ground and practice on the ground, the translation from ground to saddle is not without variation. Not only must you become an archer, but your horse must also accept the vibrations, sounds and feelings of a bow and arrow being carried and shot from the saddle, along

with a quiver, and the mistakes we all make along the way. The rider and horse must be comfortable riding rein-less as you drop your reins when shooting. Your form when shooting a Korean course is typically a modified two-point, but there are more complicated shooting forms. And then there are multiple ways in which to draw, nock and release. The most widely used by ranked and winning competitive mounted archers in the U.S. is thumb draw, which is said to be the most ancient form. However, those who come into horses and horseback archery as three fingered or “Mediterranean” release archers find it is easier to stay with what they know, rather than learn another method. The divisions in the sport often center along these different practices as well as purposes. Some are mostly focused on national and international competition, others on recreation. MMA welcomes both, emphasizing safety, training, education, preservation, and performance. The bows used in horseback archery are different than traditional recurves. Horse-bows, as we call them, are shorter, lighter and have no shelf. There are as many variations on where one shoots as there are on form in riding and shooting. There are internationally standardized competitive tracks, field tracks, or 3D tracks. And now MMA is proud to have founded the first ever Mounted Archery Performance Team in the U.S., combining the drill elements of martial arts, hunt and war across horseback cultures, to the modern sport of mounted archery. The MMA Performance Team will be doing demonstrations at the Michigan Horse Expo March 2018. We will also have a booth to share information and opportunities. You will find mounted archery clubs recently established in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and more. The overwhelming majority got their start with MMA. For MMA has hosted hundreds at Indiana's Hoosier Horse Fair for the first time ever in 2017, as well as training since 2016 in Michigan. SHIAWASSEE TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION Riding with Friends Since 1961 In 1961, a group of horse riders got together and decided to start a new organization. The purpose of this was to encourage, promote, and expand the wholesome sport of horseback riding for their own pleasure and for others to enjoy. To reach our goals, we schedule trail rides April through October. The Shiawassee Trail Riders ride in many different areas, from Ionia Recreation Area to Hadley Hills, and from the UP of Michigan to the Shawnee National Forest. We try to plan at least three rides in Northern Michigan, as well as rides outside of Michigan. Our rides are circle rides with occasional rides from one horse camp to another. The total camping experience is important to us. We often have potluck dinners together, plan shopping excursions, kayak adventures, poker rides and many other activities for all to enjoy. We have hosts for each ride which you can contact for information. We hold an annual meeting on the last Saturday in January, and sometimes a summer meeting at a scheduled ride. Our club is family and individual oriented, so no one is left out. We have active members in their eighties to children, and every age in between. You must be a member to participate.

YSTRA MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of the Yankee Springs Trail Riders Association is to preserve, protect, improve and expand existing horse campgrounds and the horse trail network in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area, and the surrounding areas, for use by horsemen, their families and the general public for horse riding and camping. To develop and maintain good communications and working relationships with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Division, and/or its successors. To assist them in their efforts to maintain adequate horse campgrounds and riding trails and to help generate revenue that will enable horse campgrounds to become self-supporting. To promote horse riding and camping by providing information to the general public on the location of horse campground facilities, horse trails and the recreational benefits available. Our Association was founded in 1989 by a group of riders that had been using the trails for quite some time. They decided that much more could be accomplished by organizing, and we have grown to over a hundred family memberships since then. We are a calendar year organization, offering family membership of $20.00 that runs from January 1st to December the 31st. We also offer a lifetime membership as well. As a trail riding group we try to have at least 3 events per year, one being a fundraiser for another nonprofit organization, such as Cancer Families United. We also like to have a kid's FREE event once a year and then a club fund raiser for improvement's to camp and trails. Our events are held at our Horseman’s Campground on Duffy Road in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area. Our monthly meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of every month, usually with a potluck and the meeting to follow. Except for our annual banquet meeting, which is subject to new time and location as the board sees to change each year. Newsletters are biannual. YSTRA will continue to improve and create more equestrian trails for our trail system with the help of our public land managers. In 2016 YSTRA became an official friends group of the Yankee Springs Horseman’s Camp. We will continue to work to improve the campground and possibly bring electricity to our horse camp one day. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Horse associations and trail riding groups welcome volunteers with open arms. Thank you for your support! Horses have been my passion and obsession for more years than I can count. I was the “crazy horse kid” when I was younger, and I still marvel at the grace and beauty of these wonderful creatures as I am now older. I have been privileged to own and live side by side with my family of horses over the years, and have developed amazing, rewarding friendships with them.
