YANKEE SPRINGS TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of the Yankee Springs Trail Riders Association is to preserve, protect, improve and expand existing horse campgrounds and the horse trail network in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area, and the surrounding areas, for use by horsemen, their families and the general public for horse riding and camping. To develop and maintain good communications and working relationships with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Division, and/or its successors. To assist them in their efforts to maintain adequate horse campgrounds and riding trails and to help generate revenue that will enable horse campgrounds to become self-supporting. To promote horse riding and camping by providing information to the general public on the location of horse campground facilities, horse trails and the recreational benefits available. Our Association was founded in 1989 by a group of riders that had been using the trails for quite some time. They decided that much more could be accomplished by organizing, and we have grown to over a hundred family memberships since then. We are a calendar year organization, st st offering family membership of $20.00 that runs from January 1 to December the 31 . We also offer a lifetime membership as well. As a trail riding group we try to have at least 3 events per year, one being a fundraiser for another nonprofit organization, such as Cancer Families United. We also like to have a kid's FREE event once a year and then a club fund raiser for improvement's to camp and trails. Our events are held at our Horseman’s Campground on Duffy Road in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area. Our monthly meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of every month, usually with a potluck and the meeting to follow. Except for our annual banquet meeting, which is subject to new time and location as the board sees to change each year. Newsletters are biannual. YSTRA will continue to improve and create more equestrian trails for our trail system with the help of our public land managers. In 2016 YSTRA became an official friends group of the Yankee Springs Horseman’s Camp. We will continue to work to improve the campground and possibly bring electricity to our horse camp one day. Bring your passion for horses to an organization near you! Volunteers are the life-giving entities to any horse association or group. Without volunteers, many horse associations and trail riding groups would not be in existence today. Offer your services, weekly, monthly or periodically throughout the year. Every additional helper is welcome, no matter what their age. Some of the youngest people, make great volunteers. A Note From The Editor: When I was a youth I was fortunate to show and be involved in 4-H. As I became an adult, I was able to show at some of my local horse shows. The times that I spent at horse shows and preparing for them are some of my most memorable in life. The camaraderie, the competition, the friendships gained were irreplaceable. The bond that was deepened between my horse and I was such a blessing and an added bonus. If you’ve thought of joining a horse association or a trail riding group, please do so. You will gain so much in your life, the experience will be exceptional and you will have no regrets. Meet new people that love the same thing that you do; trail riding, showing, or just hanging out with horses. You don’t need to own a horse, join a group, there is always activities that you can assist with and participate in. Horse people are some of the best in the world and will welcome you with open arms. I have been so blessed to have gained so many friends through Saddle Up! Magazine over the years. I may only see them at horse shows or at an expo, but that’s okay, that is part of the excitement of the event, knowing that I will be greeting my friends with hugs and warm wishes! Saddle Up! Magazine is devoted to helping the horse community in Michigan and Ohio stay connected through free event and horse show listings in both states. No other equine publication offers the amount of free printed pages for horse shows that we offer.
