RANCH RODEO Sunday, March 11th – 2:30 p.m. What Is A Ranch Rodeo? For years cowboys have used nothing but a good horse and a long rope to care for animals in the open. These everyday ranch jobs were turned into a somewhat friendly competition, pitting ranch hands against one another. Braggin’ rights were considered the ultimate prize. Competition is by pre-entered teams, four members each. Come cheer on your favorite team to be the all-around winner!

Michigan Horse Council 2018 Catalyst Awards The Michigan Horse Council Catalyst Awards were started in 1995 by our then president, Barb Heyboer, who thought there should be recognition for individuals involved in the Michigan Horse Industry. A catalyst is a person who dares to step forward and make a difference. Catalysts are recognized this year at the annual Michigan Horse Expo®. The inscription on the plaques presented to recipients reads: “Your efforts and communication have made a significant contribution to the renaissance of the Michigan Horse Industry.” Catalyst Award recipients have made an impact in the horse industry through education, leadership and innovation.

Presentation of plaques to recipients of the 2018 MICHIGAN HORSE COUNCIL CATALYST AWARDS will take place Saturday, March 10th, 1:45 p.m.

STEVE NEWMAN – A blacksmith and farrier located in Charlotte, MI has spent a multitude of years as an equine enthusiast and servant to the industry. He willingly goes the extra two miles for his equine and human customers. Steve’s business hours are divided between on the road trimming and shoeing, to work in his Chester Blacksmith Shop, on Chester Road in Charlotte. His four legged clients include ponies, donkeys, drafts, mules, trail horses, plus show and contesting equine. Steve travels to Illinois to tend a herd of Shires. Steve Newman was an Eaton County 4-H equine club member from age nine to eighteen. He was an Assistant Superintendent and then Superintendent for 10 years. Helping with the horse pulls for twenty one years, is yet another of Steve’s volunteer contributions. Chester Blacksmith Shop has sponsored trophies and are awarded at several local and an International event. Steve mentored under the late Doug Schultz, a second generation blacksmith farrier himself. Steve fulfilled a lifelong dream, establishing his independent business 20 years ago. He takes the time needed to bend and shape each shoe insuring a proper fit. It’s a craft that has earned him the reputation of being the go to guy for the problem horse. Gentleman Steve makes time for the unexpected need. He takes time away from his busy schedule to attend laminitis and equine nutrition seminars, and works closely with serval veterinarians to insure total equine health. Newman’s draft teams and covered wagon have provided many with the joy of riding behind a pair of horses during the Grand Ledge Island Color Cruise, Charlotte Frontier Days (Woldumar Nature Ctr.), Country Mill Apple Orchard and Reverman Christmas Tree Farm. Equine Activities are a family affair for the Newman’s. Steve, his wife Karen and daughter Kelsie, recently enjoyed a three day trail ride together. Molly the mule is Steve’s favorite mount. Karen is a Judicial Asst./Court Recorder for the chief judge for Eaton County Trial Courts. Daughter Kelsie is a senior at Olivet College w/major in Environmental Science. Older daughter, Kaitlin Braithwaite, Delphos, OH is the Digital Analytics Manager for the Vera Bradley Company.

ELLEN VANSLYKE – has been a horse lover all her life. As a child she just KNEW that someday she would own her own horse and ride happily off into the sunset. However, her mother reminded her that their city backyard barely fit the cat, let alone a horse. It was when Ellen’s daughter decided she hated spend-ing hours and days in the gym for gymnastics, she wanted a HORSE, the world changed for both. A larger house and “backyard” were found as at that time Ellen was successfully raising and showing collies. Her daughter, Noel, had become interested in such competition as well. With luck, they found a farm with horses for sale about one mile from their new home and that was the beginning of 30 years with the Tennessee Walking Horse and the Walking Horse Association of Michigan. Ellen quickly became an active member and held a wide variety of positions including news editor, treasurer, trails chairperson, and Board Director. She also sat on the futurity committee for many years. Ellen developed a series of schooling shows at Oakland County Fairgrounds to encourage new and amateur gaited horse owners to participate in competitions. Ellen assisted in developing, sponsoring and working at many Michigan Walking Horse shows. Her interest was in halter foals and young horses, while her daughter was interested in riding. They were blessed with many wonderful horses and gained both state and national wins. 4-H really was a terrific addition to the equine activities. 4-H really emphasizes halter or showmanship. Noel and Ellen will tell anyone, 4-H made them both National Champion halter competitors. Ellen was a supportive Mom, but also assisted at meetings, practices, demonstrations and promoting the use of gaited horses in 4-H. Judges were questioning what gait is that horse doing? Gaited horses can’t do gymkhana, and gaited horses don’t trot, so they can’t be judged. Ellen passed out Walking Horse information and pointed out that the 4-H

project books had several pages dedicated to gaited horses, what to expect for gait, and the type of equipment they were permitted to use. She also went to state leadership meetings and again supported the use of gaited horses. It was in the 4-H days that Ellen met a lifetime friend, Janet Day, who became her traveling partner on the trails of America. She joined Shiawassee Trail Riders and met more devoted trail riders. She became involved in trail groups. She was a member of the Board of Directors for Ortonville Recreation Equestrian Assoc. When it looked like equestrians were going to be excluded from use in the Pigeon River area, she and her friend Janet, quickly joined and supported the efforts of Back Country of America in working with the MDNR to ensure equestrian trails. This activity has developed an interest in attending the Equine Trails subcommittee and Natural Resources Commission meetings to participate in state planning and developing of equine trails. Along with dear friend, Jinjyr Whiteman, she has helped to open the newest equestrian camp in the MDNR park holdings. Working with many avid riders from Alpena County Horseman’s Club, and the many riders that have joined to form the Equestrian Friends of Big Oaks has been inspiring. All these equestrians love camping and riding in the beautiful forests of Michigan. Ellen has been a member of the MHC for more than 25 years and has been parliamentarian, Director, and Secretary for this wonderful organization. She has had the tough job of filling in for the Expo administrator and was GLAD when the following year Marilyn Graff, Ann Louise Budd, and Margret Warden were able to come back. “Serving in Michigan Horse Council has been a privilege and honor,” Ellen says.

KATHY GLEW – As a lifelong horse lover, Kathy Glew, of DeWitt, MI, has had horses all of her adult life. In 1987 Kathy started volunteering with Clinton County Horseback Riding for the Handicapped. This experience inspired her to attend an intensive training program at Cheff (Therapeutic Riding) Center in 1990 to become an instructor for therapeutic riding. She took this education back to Beekman Center in Lansing and taught therapeutic riding there from 1990-2001. To further her education and service to those she worked with, she became an Advanced Instructor for PATH, International Inc. (Professional Assoc. of Therapeutic Horsemanship). In 1999, Kathy became certified by PATH Intl. as an Evaluator to teach and mentor new instructors for Therapeutic Riding. Over the past 19 years she has certified hundreds of new instructors all over the US, as well as Canada and Spain. Currently Kathy is taking her love of teaching and horses into being a mentor for several instructors pursuing therapeutic riding teaching certification. One of her passions in her therapeutic riding career has been working with veterans with PTSD. Kathy is currently assisting a group of veterans at BraveHearts, Poplar Grove, IL as they become certified PATH instructors. Once they have achieved certification, these vets will help more veterans begin to heal with the help of horses. In 2016 Kathy returned to Beekman Therapeutic Riding Center to become an active member of the advisory board. Her mission is to help facilitate the growth of this long-standing Therapeutic Riding Program. Kathy has been a part of the Michigan Horse Expo since it moved to its current location, always volunteering in the Horse Area, and making certain that she ensured the safety of both the horses and of those attending.

Michigan Horse Council 2018 Scholarships play a big role in a lot of people’s lives throughout the whole world. My goal of studying equine reproduction is to one day help increase the quality of the horses in Michigan. I plan to see a day where there are no horses in auction barns heading off to slaughter because of their conformational defaults, their terrible attitudes, or their inability to perform. I want to help breeders create the best horses possible, so that the horse industry can continue to grow and thrive.

Every year, the Michigan Horse Council (MHC) recognizes outstanding Michigan equestrian students by providing scholarships to further their education. It is the sincere hope of the Michigan Horse Council that these individuals will obtain an education that will allow them to continue their involvement with horses in the future. The Michigan Horse Expo is pleased to honor these Scholarship recipients at the 35th Annual Michigan Horse Expo. Since MSU scholarships are selected in April of each year, 2017 recipients will be honored.

SHELBY CHRISTENSEN – EAST LANSING, MI My name is Shelby Christensen and I am currently an Animal Science student studying at Michigan State University. I have been riding horses since I was six years old, and although I have centered much of my life around all sorts of creatures, horses were the ones that showed me much of the industry and professional life that could come from working with animals. As my activities list shows, I have witnessed or participated in many of the facets of equine work. I have been in everything from the typical lessons to drill team, to parading past the Fox Theater, and I have seen how people view horses from both the inside and outside of the equine world. I knew I wanted to work with animals, and I knew I did not wish to be a vet (as typically expected) and as much of the naturalist/zoology field is fascinating, it was too unstable for me to pursue. Animal science, with its largely agricultural base, was both exceedingly interesting and large enough to have plenty of opportunities for me to find what I really wanted to do in the future. There are many horse and livestock focused classes that would allow me to work with equines in ways beyond trainer or veterinarian, from a nutritionist to tack designer, to an AI researcher. Whether or not I will have an equine focused job in the future, I know I wish to stick with and pursue horses in one way or another.

Presentation will be on Sunday, March 11th at 12:45 p.m.

MI HORSE COUNCIL MEMBER SCHOLARSHIPS The following is the essay each recipient wrote for their scholarship application.

KENNEDY EKOVICH – MASON, MI Horses have been my life ever since I got my first pony when I was three years old. I have competed in various disciplines at the local, state and national levels. Currently I am showing on the AQHA circuit, while still being an active youth board member for the MI Appaloosa Horse Association. I hope to continue riding recreationally in college and upon graduation return to showing as an Amateur. Two awards I am most proud of are my National Appaloosa Barrel Championship and my Reserve Youth World Nez Perce Stakes title. Academics have always been a priority, and my efforts have been recognized by receiving many awards, including the Capital Area Activities Conference All Academic Award in three Varsity sports, as well as the MI Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Academic All State Award, Division 2. Along with devoting a considerable amount of time to horses and academics, I am actively involved in my community. I have been a member of National Honor Society for two years, and a student leader my senior year. This year, one of my volunteer opportunities included coordinating the school-wide food drive for the Mason Food Bank. The skills and lessons I have learned through involvement with horses and volunteer experiences, combined with my drive and dedication, I believe will help me be successful in my chosen field. I have been working the past four years saving what I can for college, and will continue to work while attending college along with applying for available scholarships.

HALEY TAPPER – LANSING, MI Horses have been my passion since I have been six years old. I chose to make my passion, my career. I have learned so much and it is only the beginning of my journey. I currently work at Michigan State University’s Horse Teaching and Research Center, which has been my inspiration for my recent decision of a future career. I have decided equine reproduction will be a great fit for myself. In the meantime, I will continue to learn and gain experiences that will help me succeed in my career. I am planning on doing my internship at the MSU HTRC this summer where I will learn to collect stallions, foal out and breed mares. As part of my internship, I will also be taking the horse training class that gives students opportunities to work and compete with MSU horses all summer. From this I hope to gain valuable, real world experience that I can build on in my years after college. Horses MICHIGAN HORSE EXPO, MARCH 2018

Beekman Therapeutic Riding Center Beekman Therapeutic Riding Center provides people of all abilities the opportunity to partner with horses through natural horsemanship, to inspire the spirit, heal the body, and nourish the soul in a safe, caring, four-season environment with nationally certified instructors and specially trained horses. While we are housed on the grounds of the Marvin E. Beekman Center, we are no longer a program of the Lansing School District. We are a program of the Lansing Public Schools Educational Advancement Foundation (LEAF) a 501(c)(3) non profit foundation separate from the school district. We subsist on grants, community lesson fees, a superb cast of dedicated volunteers, and the generosity of donors. All donations to BTRC, whether in cash or in kind, are tax deductible. Our program is governed by a hard working eight-member Advisory Board. Our program functions under PATH, Intl. guidelines to provide an enjoyable and safe environment for all participants. In addition to these popular services, we offer clinics, community classes, and equine therapy.

Be sure to stop by Stalls 727 and 729 to learn first hand about the programs and needs at
