RANCH RODEO Sunday, March 10th – 2:30 p.m. What Is A Ranch Rodeo? For years cowboys have used nothing but a good horse and a long rope to care for animals in the open. These everyday ranch jobs were turned into a somewhat friendly competition, pitting ranch hands against one another. Braggin’ rights were considered the ultimate prize. Competition is by pre-entered teams, four members each. Come cheer on your favorite team to be the all-around winner!

Exciting News for the 2019 RANCH RODEO... There will be a Celebrity Team Challenging Last Year’s Champion! This Team Will Include: • Joe Coalter, Expo Announcer • Ray Ainsworth, Expo Clinician • Tim Younglove, Grace Adventures • Duke Largo Wimberley, Rodeo Champion

He's best known for HIS Young Horse Development Program and many graduates are competing and winning at the National and International Levels. His focus is on perfecting the art of persuading a horse to want to do and enjoy their job (psychological horse training). His years of training have led to him to discover the common learning similarities in both people and horses. Because of the success of both the horse’s he has trained and their owners to learn to communicate with each other, he began to recognize the benefits of using the horse's emotions as a teaching tool. Bill has owned Chase Lake Equine Center in Fowlerville for 11 years, and operated W. Brown Performance Horses for 13 years. He holds professional memberships in the National Reining Horse Association and American Quarter Horse Association. Bill is a graduate of the University of Findlay, with Bachelors degrees in Western Riding and Business Management, as well as studies in Exercise Physiology and Reproduction.

Julie Goodnight

Ray Ainsworth

Julie Goodnight established a connection with horses at a young age and after a successful run as a youth rider on jumping horses, she galloped her way through college riding race horses. For nearly four decades, she's been at home in the Colorado Rockies, pursuing wilderness sports and riding cow horses. Founding her training business in 1985, Julie's reputation as a horse trainer grew far and wide. In 2008, she began producing Horse Master with Julie Goodnight, a popular how-to horse training series that has aired weekly on RFD-TV for more than a decade with 260 episodes.

Kim Cardeccia Kimberly Cardeccia, MA, LPC started Hidden Promise because of what she was witnessing in her counseling clients and riding students. She investigated, researched and experimented with how the bond between horses and humans can help heal and enrich both species. Kim is passionate about helping both horses and people to be heard and understood. She has a special gift of being able to help people step into their own potential...to nd their Hidden Promise!

Custers Cowboys Cowboy Mounted Shooting® is one of the nation's fastest growing equestrian sports. Mounted contestants compete in this fast action timed event using two .45 caliber single action revolvers each loaded with ve rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition. Courses of re are set in a variety of patterns. Custers Cowboys began in 1999 with a clinic offered by world champion shootist and horsewoman, Annie Bianco-Ellett. Since then, they have grown to a statewide club that organizes various shooting competitions across Michigan and Ohio. Custers Cowboys is an afliate club of the National Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association.

Ray does not train horses; he teaches them in a way that makes him one of the world's most unique horsemen. He has found that through communication and non-violence, horses learn faster and retain the information longer. Ray's approach is based on the fact that horses have their own language and are capable of communicating a wide variety of messages. All horses know it, so does Ray. And so can you.

Joe Coalter In 2003, Joe joined the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) and began competing. Later, he helped form one of the largest clubs in CMSA history and began announcing their events simply because no one else wanted to do it. After receiving a multitude of compliments regarding the quality of his voice and his passion for the industry, Joe realized he found the way to follow his dream and walked away from the corporate scene to pursue announcing full time.

Heritage Hill Farm Hitch Heritage Hill Farm LLC., of Albion, Michigan is a family owned Belgian Draft horse hitch. M.G. and Sharon Micklatcher along with their daughter Lynn, and her husband Mike Loveland make up the partnership. Thrill to the excitement of their champion Belgians in multiple combinations, especially the fantastic six-horse hitch!

David Hallock For the rst time since the 1950s, Michigan State University (MSU) will operate a farrier school. Dansville, Michigan, farrier David Hallock will be their instructor. “Having MSU reenter hoof-care education is sort of a homecoming,” Hallock says. “They used to have one of the best farrier programs in the U.S. and we are hoping to return to that point.” MSU will operate the only farrier school in the state since the closing of Wolverine Horseshoeing School several years ago.

Pegg Johnson A chance conversation launched an entirely new venture for Pegg's business. Not content with the one day 4-H sewing clinics Pegg had been offering, people began asking for more extensive instruction over the course of several days. Thus Sewing Retreat weekends were born. Realizing that she modied many of the patterns she used, Pegg has begun developing her own line of show clothing patterns. Many more ideas are on the drawing board and being developed. Just ask Pegg at the MI Horse Expo! Tracy Mohnke Tracy Mohnke is an Equine Specialist with Tribute Equine Nutrition. Tracy has worked with top Nutritionists in the Equine Nutrition industry for over 18 years. She specializes in analyzing feeding programs and making recommendations for specic horses, as well as large equine operations. Tracy has been involved in the equine industry her entire life and enjoys competing in all around events with her American Paint Horses. Her passion is helping other horse owners achieve their goals by assisting them with their nutrition programs.

Dr. Brian Nielsen Dr. Brian Nielsen is a professor at Michigan State University in the Department of Animal Science, and is an equine exercise physiologist. In addition, Dr. Nielsen is the faculty advisor for the MSU Rodeo Club and has been since 1997, as well as holding the Guiness World Record for the fastest racing cow! With a 60% research appointment, Dr. Nielsen works hard to perform research of use to the equine community. The primary focus of his research tends to be directed towards reducing injuries to performance horses through nutrition, training and management. However, he occasionally does research in other areas of equine nutrition, as well as collaborative studies looking at equine behavior.

Michigan Mounted Police Units Mounted Police Units from across the state join at the Expo to present the colors and honor fallen heroes presentations. This year there will be members of 21 different Mounted Police units that will be participating in the Color Presentations each day.

Dr. John Shelle Horse Commissions, Questions and Answers is the topic to be discussed in a panel headed by Dr. John Shelle. Dr. Shelle has recently retired from MSU. After 40 years during which time he developed the 2 Year Horse Management Program, and received numerous awards of excellence. Dr. George Smith In his role as AgBioResearch associate director, George Smith leads the animal and veterinary science research portfolio, serves as a liaison to the animal agriculture stakeholder groups, provides oversight of the Ofce of Research Support, and contributes to the overall leadership and operation of the organization. As CANR associate dean for research, he provides strategic vision, leadership and administrative oversight of the college research portfolio. While the MSU Rodeo Club contribution is signicant, the cost of potential expansion is projected to approach $3.0 million. Thanks, in part, to the MSU Rodeo Club's commitment, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) has started the early stages of fundraising and gathering support for the project. Getting this project completed will take the support of our agriculture community. Whether through large corporate donations or smaller gifts from individuals or families that appreciate having such a valuable resource available, this project will have a lasting legacy in our great state of Michigan. We hope you will join us in this exciting project! MICHIGAN HORSE EXPO | MARCH 2019

Two Outlaws and a Good Guy

Dr. Rob Van Wessum

The cowboy band, Two Outlaws and a Good Guy, has been singing for groups and audiences since 2001. Their goal has always been to provide family western entertainment, singing the songs of the cowboy past and present. From the Sons of the Pioneers, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Rex Allen, and others, to the contemporary western groups such as the Bar J Wranglers and the Sons of the San Joaquin, they strive to carry on the music that tells the story of the cowboy. Over the years, they have seen band members come and go, but their current mainstays are Cowboy Danny Crampton, Lyle Hanson and Ken Schlaey.

An accomplished trainer and rider, Dr. Rob van Wessum, an USDF bronze, silver and gold medalist, has competed in the FEI classes in the Netherlands. He is a Royal Dutch Horse Federation certied instructor and trainer and National Judge for all classes up to Grand Prix and Freestyle to Music. At the moment he has brought ve horses in the US to FEI Small Tour and one horse to Grand Prix dressage. He works with his friend and fellow judge Eddy de Wolff van Westerrode, a 5* FEI judge from the Netherlands, as his coach and trainer in the US. He and his wife Kimberly, an ACVS diplomat, live on a farm in Mason and enjoy the life with horses in hobby and professional life.

Eddy de Wolff van Westerrode Eddy de Wolff van Westerrode, besides being an international FEI 5+ Grand-Prix judge, who has adjudicated all the top dressage riders and amazones, is also co-author of the book “De Dressuur-proef Van Groen tot Grand Prix” (The Dressage Test from Green to Grand Prix). Nowadays Eddy works as a freelance instructor. If he's not abroad to judge or coach, Eddy trains his horses at the stable Weltevreden during the mornings, after that he gives horse ling lessons to his students. Adjudicating is in his heart, but he nds it a hard choice leaving his kids back at home.

Working Equitation American horsemen of all disciplines are embracing the new spor t of Working Equitation. Horsemen riding every breed of horse and any discipline from Classical Dressage to Western Cow Horses are trying their hand at the precision and unity of horse and rider needed to excel at Working Equitation. Working Equitation is comprised of four phases including: working dressage, ease of handling with obstacles, speed obstacles and cattle handling. Working Equitation is a sport steeped in history, as the goal is to preserve and carry on the cultural traditions of each country and its horses. At the international level, the advanced riders must ride with the reins only in one hand, but at the lower levels may ride with both hands. This discipline is based on horses working on the ranch, with cattle and in the elds, so the rider will need the other hand to manipulate equipment.

Michigan Horse Council 2019 Catalyst Awards The Michigan Horse Council Catalyst Awards were started in 1995 by our then president, Barb Heyboer, who thought there should be recognition for individuals involved in the Michigan Horse Industry. A catalyst is a person who dares to step forward and make a difference. Normally, Four “Catalysts” are recognized each year at the annual Michigan Horse Expo®. The inscription on the plaques presented to recipients reads: “Your efforts and communication have made a signicant contribution to the renaissance of the Michigan Horse Industry.” These Catalyst Award recipients have made an impact in the horse industry through education, leadership and innovation. Presentation of the plaques to the recipients of the 2019 Michigan Horse Council Catalyst Awards will take place at 1:00 on Saturday, March 9.

2019 Recipients: Christie Showerman & MSU Rodeo Club

CHRISTIE SHOWERMAN In 1985, Christie Showerman founded a Quarter Horse training facility in Fowlerville, MI. Soon after in 1990, Jim Evans from Kalkaska, MI joined the team where the farm would be founded in Webberville, as Northfork Farms. Northfork would become the home of 65 top placings at the World, Congress and Nation for the next 20 years as a Quarter Horse training facility. In 2005 the decision was made to cut back on the training and expand the farm elsewhere. The vision of Christie would be to create a summer horse day camp along with developing a lesson program that would teach children of various ages and experience on how to ride, work safely, and understand how a horse thinks and reacts. Along with the development of the summer camp and lesson program an 1800's Wild West would be built and replicated on the farm. With over 45 hands on activities the farm would now market toward schools, day cares, and recreational groups. Once the Wild West was developed, the addition of a petting zoo with exotic animals was developed which added an additional teaching station. In 2011 Christie would step back into the Quarter Horse training with current lesson students gaining an additional 2 Congress Champions and 4 Reserve Congress Champions. In 2016 Northfork built two cabins along with the nishing of their new clubhouse, which allows the farm to run day and overnight retreats. Today, Northfork Farms is under the ownership and direction of Christie and Todd Showerman. Operations include a lesson program that teachs 100 students on a weekly basis, offering summer day and overnight camps for various ages, and the Wild West which is the home to 50+ eld trips a year. Christie and Northfork are also the ofcial trainers of the Michigan State University Equestrian Stock Team. MICHIGAN HORSE EXPO | MARCH 2019

MSU RODEO CLUB

This year the MSU Rodeo Club celebrated the 50th anniversary of the MSU Spartan Stampede Rodeo. In the early 2000s, due to circumstances beyond their control, the rodeo switched from a collegiate rodeo to one sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA). While the club members can still compete in college rodeo within the Ozark Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, this opened up the Stampede to professional riders and others that may not be eligible to compete at the college level. With that change, recognition has come to the Stampede. Six times the rodeo has been chosen as “Indoor Rodeo of the Year” by members of the IPRA (2018, 2017, 2014, 2013, 2012, and 2011). It also was the rst runner-up in 2016 and 2015. Given the roughly 300 IPRA rodeos across the U.S. and Canada, this is an amazing achievement accomplished by “a group of college kids.” Additionally, MSU’s Depar tment of Student Life recognizes accomplishments by registered student organizations at the annual Student Life Leadership Awards Reception. In both 2009 and 2017, presidents of the MSU Rodeo Club have been selected as “Leader of the Year!!” Dr. Brian Nielsen, MSU Rodeo Club Advisor, was honored in 2014 as “Advisor of the Year” – but all credit for that is due the great individuals in the Rodeo Club. Additionally, the Rodeo Club has been recognized with the following: • 2017 Spartan Silver Award Winner, Outstanding Service Organization • 2017 Honorable Mention for Outstanding Professional Organization • 2016 Spartan Silver Award Winner, Outstanding Service Organization • 2015 Spartan Silver Award Winner, Outstanding Prof. Organization • 2015 Honorable Mention for Student Organization Achievement • 2015 Honorable Mention for Outstanding Service Organization Given there are over 800 registered student organizations on the MSU campus, these achievements are extraordinary! Though some of the recognition is for the quality of rodeo, much of it is for the club’s civic activities. The club has raised thousands of dollars for charity and has visited many schools, youth groups, and church groups over the years teaching young people about animal husbandry, agriculture, and the sport of rodeo. In addition to all of this activity, the MSU Rodeo Club has pledged $100,000.00 towards the planned expansion of the MSU Pavilion! While these awards have come in recent years, one thing has remained true: putting on the rodeo is a team event. The stock contractor, Twisted P Rodeo Company, is one of the best in the business and has been a great partner for many years. Other coaches and advisors are: Denise and Kyle Fullhart, and Bill Humphrey. Further, celebrating the 50th anniversary would not be possible without the hundreds of club members over the last half century who have worked long hours to put on the rodeo every single year!
