JULIE GOODNIGHT https://juliegoodnight.com/ Growing up in the ‘60s on a small horse farm in central Florida, Julie had a connection with horses from a young age. Little did she know that her childhood affinity would blossom into a remarkable career with horses. Now an internationally renowned trainer and clinician, Julie is a rarity in that she has ridden and trained extensively in multiple disciplines, both English and western, working with multiple breeds. Her focus is on classical horsemanship and developing the horse and rider’s relationship. Following a successful run as a youth rider on jumping horses, Goodnight headed west to fulfill her dreams of skiing, mountain climbing and white-water paddling. She galloped her way through college on the backs of Thoroughbred race horses, graduating from the University of New Mexico with Magna Cum Laude distinction. After graduation, Julie moved to southern Colorado, where she started her horse training business in 1985. It wasn’t long before Goodnight was known for having a special touch with horses and a gift for teaching people. Her reputation grew, and she began traveling the world to share her unique approach to horse training. In 2008, Julie began producing the popular TV series, Horse Master with Julie Goodnight, a how-to horse training series that aired weekly on RFD-TV for eleven years. After producing and starring in 260 episodes, Julie has now set her sights on sharing the magical world of horses with a broader audience, through 2Horse Productions, an equine, nature and adventure lifestyle production company. Julie is a member of the prestigious Horse & Rider team, and she offers guidance to horse enthusiasts in articles and through clinics and appearances worldwide. Goodnight is a frequent contributor to top horse publications such as Horse & Rider and Horse Illustrated, and the author of a syndicated column reaching more than 20 regional horse publications monthly. She also produces a monthly audio podcast on horse training, offers online educational programs and her On-Demand Videos are among the top go-to training tools for horse owners everywhere. Goodnight travels both domestically and internationally to teach horsemanship and she was named Exceptional Equestrian Educator by Equine Affaire – one of only three such awards ever given. Goodnight is Spokesperson for the Certified Horsemanship Association, an organization focused on promoting safety and excellence in horsemanship, and she holds their highest level of certification, Master Clinic Instructor. Goodnight and her husband, Rich Moorhead, a ski-industry professional, reside near Salida, Colorado. In their spare time, they enjoy skiing, boating and riding cow horses. EMILY PARK USDF Bronze & Silver Medalist | https://silvertailfarm.com/ Emily began her riding career at the age of 5, dabbling in all disciplines until she officially decided on Dressage at age 12. She acquired her first Dressage horse, Riva Dee, and moved up the levels with her. Riva Dee also serves as her foundation mare for her breeding program, with the first foal hitting the ground in 2012. At age 16, the pair moved to Del Mar, CA to train with the Grand Prix trainer and premier sales agent, David Blake, as a working student. Under David Blake, Emily gained many valuable experiences, riding at least 4 horses a day, from those just starting to the FEI level. With David, Emily caught the ride on Pretty Lady, who became her North American Junior Championship 2014 mount. She placed 6th on the first day of competition, however, due to an unfortunate boarding accident. Pretty Lady sustained a career-ending injury forcing them to withdraw from the competition. After NAJYRC, Emily stayed with David for another year, developing her superstar young horse, Heide Star (Heide Spirit). Whom was later acquired by David as a US Team candidate. It was then she accepted the job of grooming a top FEI horse for Tracy Roenick and Steffen Peters and traveled to the top CDI’s from Del Mar to Wellington, experiencing the highest levels of Dressage. Emily then took a step back from the grooming/working student world and began a training program under FEI rider, Nick Onoda. Together, Nick and Emily have solidified a program for starting the young horses bred by Emily and her mother, Laura Frederiksen-Park. These horses were campaigned up and down the west coast, and 8 of her home-breds now lead sport careers in Dressage with their new owners. She now runs Silver Tail Farm’s training program for beginners to advanced riders, young to FEI horses, with an emphasis on encouraging and developing youth riders to find a passion in Dressage. Emily is a USDF Bronze and Silver Medalist. At home she continues her education with Rebecca Rigdon and Christophe Theallet. She is currently campaigning her home-bred 2016 Le Coeur de Licosto at second level, and her exciting new FEI mount D-Dancer Epona-B at the Intermediate, look for them on the international circuit!
BRANDT CLARK http://www.brandtclark.com/ Each horse is an individual. Each horse has a unique set of experiences that affect his perception of the world. To say that one approach could meet the need of every horse would be unjust or unfair. This is one of the best lessons I have learned throughout my years of working with horses. We can only meet the horse where he is at mentally, physically, and emotionally. He is what he is...and that is beautifully made by God. We should only enhance what he is offering. It would be arrogant to think we can create something he is not willing to give to us freely. I firmly believe they want us to be a leader. A confident leader who helps him feel good about himself and yet has a plan. Leadership comes in many forms but will always be one of the primary ingredients in a successful partnership with your horse. – Brandt Clark

FIVE DECADES OF LEADERSHIP IN MICHIGAN’S EQUINE COMMUNITY
2022 marks the 39th annual Michigan Horse Expo, hosted by the Michigan Horse Council. The Expo is MHC’s top fundraiser each year which helps support equine endeavors throughout the state of Michigan. Since formalizing MHC’s philanthropic efforts in 2000, the total for grants and scholarships has surpassed the quarter million mark given to equine efforts with a total now exceeding $260,000. Two of the larger contributions MHC has been able to make are 1) $30,000 for the Mary Ann McPhail Center at MSU, which is a facility dedicated to equine gait and lameness research and veterinary clinical services, and 2) $80,000 towards the construction of the South Barn at the MSU Pavilion in East Lansing, Michigan. Many grants and general contributions have been awarded over the last ve decades: • Building and improving equine trails and campgrounds. • Supporting the equine exhibit that has been at the Michigan State Fair. • Helping competitors from various MI youth equine programs to compete at state/national competitions. • Assisting the Cheff Center to repair their arena roof after it collapsed. • Supporting county 4-H clubs and equestrian teams. • Providing funding for the MSU Extension research and educational programs. • Helping support the Youth Education Wagon Train. • Supporting efforts to equine rescue after Hurricane Katrina. The mission of the Michigan Horse Council is to support and protect the Michigan equine industry. In 2021, the MHC was unable to host the annual Michigan Horse Expo. During 2021 MHC turned our efforts towards new endeavors. • Established 3) 30 minute MI Horse News virtual shows highlighting various equine programs and special equine events. • Established a monthly MHC virtual Equine Coffee Hour that united equine groups on topics like youth equine programming, English and western retailers, equine assisted services and more. • Brought back the Statewide Trail Ride and added a Ride Challenge competition honoring riders with awards sponsored by Circle Y and Tom’s Western Store. • Hosted the 4th annual MHC Equine Legislative Day on the Capitol Lawn. Where we shared educational information with our state leaders while offering various equine organizations/businesses to be able to showcase their equine specialties. • Partnered with the Michigan DNR to host the very popular Silver Lake Shoreline Ride. • Recording a historical record number of MHC memberships at nearly 1,000 members. The Michigan Horse Council is very grateful for your support at the 2022 Michigan Horse Expo, and throughout the year to produce, promote and participate in Michigan’s equine activities.
